  1. at primary schools in New South Wales,

  2. or at least at the primary school that our two eldest are attending at the moment,

  3. the school organised a Father's Day gift system.

  4. The kids would bring in some money,

  5. and they'd get a gift for their dad to keep for Sunday.

  6. So I gave little Sonia some money for this system.

  7. And when she came home, she was crying.

  8. And I said, why are you crying?

  9. And she said, because I didn't get a Father's Day gift for you.

  10. And I said, oh, why not?

  11. Were there not any left?

  12. Did they run out?

  13. She said, no, that wasn't the problem.

  14. I said, what was the problem?

  15. She said, Daddy, I spent all the money on cupcakes and ate them all.

  16. One of life's biggest mysteries is that we don't always do what we want to do.

  17. She wanted desperately to buy a Father's Day present,

  18. and she was so sad after the fact that she didn't.

  19. But it just didn't turn out that way.

  20. I was reading in the newspaper this weekend a little segment on Clive James,

  21. who I really enjoy as a writer and an organiser of comedy.

  22. And he was lamenting the fact of some things in his personal life that he'd done

  23. that had wrecked his own marriage and somebody else's as well.

  24. And he said, you know, I knew it was wrong, and I knew it was silly,

  25. but I did it anyway, and I wish I hadn't.

  26. It's not just little children that do this sort of thing, but grown people as well.

  27. If you're human, you'll know what I'm talking about.

  28. If you're not, you probably need to replace your batteries.

  29. We don't like self-centred people, but frequently enough, that's us.

  30. We know what God requires of us,

  31. but we're keen to spot it when it doesn't happen in others.

  32. People having an affair with a married person know that it's wrong,

  33. hence the secrecy, but we still do it, nonetheless.

  34. And afterwards we say how silly we were.

  35. Well, the Apostle Paul had the same kind of experience of this life.

  36. And he writes in verse 21,

  37. so I find this law at work.

  38. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

  39. And I wonder if that's your experience of life.

  40. And have you got any ideas about why that might be the case?

  41. Why is it that even though we know what the right thing is to do,

  42. and even though we want that right thing,

  43. we still sometimes don't do it.

  44. Why is that?

  45. Some philosophers put this down to our fleshly bodies

  46. as if we're a rational mind,

  47. but we're contaminated every now and then

  48. by a polluted stomach.

  49. You know, my rational mind knew the right thing to do,

  50. but my libido overcame me in a moment of fleshly weakness.

  51. And so as a result, what they recommended

  52. to overcome this problem was a strict regime of discipline.

  53. Other people maintained that what we needed was more education.

  54. And so jails famously became places of re-education,

  55. not of punishment.

  56. And there are many disagreements about what this source

  57. of this recalcitrant streak within us is

  58. and where it comes from.

  59. Well, the Apostle Paul, in our reading from Romans today,

  60. also experienced this weakness.

  61. And for him,

  62. it proved that knowing the right thing

  63. can't make you good

  64. and wanting the right thing

  65. can't make you good either.

  66. Listen to him in verse 22.

  67. For my inner being,

  68. I delight in God's law.

  69. He was not an evil, malicious man by nature.

  70. But verse 23,

  71. but I see another law at work in me,

  72. waging war against the law of my mind

  73. and making me a prisoner

  74. of the law of sin at work in me.

  75. Now, Paul was nothing if not self-disciplined.

  76. He was also very well educated.

  77. But yet, Paul complains

  78. that he's not the good, righteous, kind person

  79. that he wanted to be.

  80. And what he's also saying,

  81. although he won't write it explicitly,

  82. is that we too are not the good, kind, righteous people

  83. that we would like to be.

  84. Now, I don't mean this

  85. in a trivial sense

  86. of simply not being perfect.

  87. Paul is not sweating the small stuff here.

  88. He's not lamenting the fact

  89. that he forgot to help some old lady

  90. over the road,

  91. cross the road,

  92. or that he admitted to give somebody

  93. a cup of tea at his home one day.

  94. He's talking about real matters

  95. where he caused real hurt

  96. to real people.

  97. What a wretched man I am, he says.

  98. Who will rescue me

  99. from this body

  100. that is subject to death?

  101. What a wretched man I am.

  102. He's not talking about

  103. trivial matters

  104. of

  105. niceness here.

  106. He's talking about

  107. the real gritty issues

  108. of human life.

  109. What a wretched man I am.

  110. How could he stand

  111. before God

  112. knowing

  113. who he was?

  114. God had given Moses

  115. very plain instructions.

  116. Worship no other gods,

  117. do not murder,

  118. do not best bear false witness

  119. against your neighbour

  120. and so on.

  121. In church in earlier times,

  122. Christians used to read out

  123. this law of Moses each week.

  124. It was not that they had forgotten

  125. some of the laws,

  126. as if they were to

  127. suddenly chirp up,

  128. oh, do not murder,

  129. oh, that's right.

  130. I thought there was

  131. something wrong this week

  132. when I killed my neighbour.

  133. But it reminded them

  134. that they would experience

  135. and did experience

  136. this same problem.

  137. That whilst they knew

  138. what was right

  139. and whilst they even

  140. wanted what was right,

  141. they frequently caved in

  142. to what was wrong.

  143. And so Paul then concludes,

  144. so I myself,

  145. in my mind,

  146. am a slave to God's law

  147. in that best sense

  148. of the word.

  149. But in my sinful nature,

  150. I am a slave

  151. to the law of sin.

  152. Well, at this point,

  153. you may think that Paul

  154. is overreacting

  155. and you may want to tell Paul

  156. to lie down on a couch,

  157. take a Valium

  158. or something like that.

  159. But Paul is not

  160. talking about

  161. some personal crisis.

  162. He's describing

  163. a big picture problem,

  164. not just of his own,

  165. but of all people.

  166. You may think

  167. that Paul's view of God

  168. is too strict,

  169. his standards too high.

  170. Maybe God doesn't mind

  171. so much

  172. about wrong

  173. in the world.

  174. But Paul's

  175. not addressing

  176. how high

  177. God's standards are here.

  178. He's talking about

  179. why there is

  180. that thing within us

  181. that drives us

  182. in the wrong direction.

  183. But by the way,

  184. be careful about

  185. wanting God

  186. to lower his standards.

  187. In any case,

  188. Paul considers

  189. that this bentness

  190. within us

  191. makes us unfit

  192. for God

  193. and unfit

  194. for living

  195. the good life

  196. for we cannot do

  197. what we want to do.

  198. Well, this conclusion

  199. is very offensive

  200. to many people

  201. because it implies

  202. for a start

  203. that Moses

  204. and the prophets

  205. were achieving

  206. very little

  207. when they spoke

  208. the words of the law

  209. over and over again

  210. to the people

  211. of Israel

  212. as if that would help.

  213. In my context,

  214. in the Middle East,

  215. the laws of Islam

  216. are recounted

  217. over and over again

  218. and people are urged

  219. to pray five times

  220. a day

  221. and you can't avoid it.

  222. The loudspeakers

  223. really fill your ears

  224. five times a day.

  225. But what Paul is saying

  226. is that

  227. even when people

  228. know God's law

  229. and even when

  230. they want to do it,

  231. this principle of evil

  232. still lies within them

  233. and makes them do

  234. the opposite

  235. of what they both do,

  236. opposite of what they want

  237. and opposite of what they know.

  238. They may delight

  239. in God's law

  240. but that sinful nature

  241. inside them

  242. pushes them

  243. the wrong way

  244. just as it does us.

  245. No amount of learning

  246. religious laws,

  247. no amount of Bible study,

  248. no amount of meditating

  249. on God's law

  250. can fix this problem.

  251. The problem is so much

  252. inside of us

  253. that Paul calls it

  254. part of our flesh,

  255. part of our makeup.

  256. It's like a recalcitrant streak

  257. within us.

  258. Paul details this problem

  259. because he doesn't want

  260. the people in Rome

  261. to whom he's writing

  262. be under any illusions

  263. about where

  264. their hope comes from.

  265. And he gives us

  266. this hope

  267. in chapter 8

  268. verses 1 to 4.

  269. It's a very dense paragraph

  270. but the ideas

  271. are simple enough

  272. so please follow along

  273. if you've got it open

  274. in front of you.

  275. And he begins in verse 1

  276. and he says,

  277. you see,

  278. there is now

  279. no condemnation

  280. for those

  281. who are in Christ Jesus.

  282. No condemnation.

  283. God knows

  284. what we are like.

  285. No fear

  286. before God's

  287. justice.

  288. No fear

  289. of the future

  290. for those

  291. who are in

  292. Christ Jesus.

  293. And why?

  294. Well, in the next verse

  295. he explains,

  296. and it turns out

  297. that both

  298. the death

  299. of Christ

  300. and the resurrection

  301. of Christ

  302. play a role.

  303. He says in verse 2,

  304. because through

  305. Christ Jesus

  306. the law

  307. of the Spirit

  308. who gives life

  309. has set you free

  310. from the law

  311. of sin and death.

  312. death.

  313. This

  314. recalcitrant

  315. streak

  316. within us,

  317. this

  318. law

  319. of sin

  320. and death,

  321. Paul says,

  322. can only be broken

  323. by the Spirit

  324. who gives life.

  325. The power

  326. that God,

  327. that Paul

  328. sees in himself,

  329. making him do

  330. the opposite

  331. of what he wants

  332. and what he knows,

  333. this can only

  334. be dealt with

  335. by God's

  336. Holy Spirit,

  337. the power

  338. of the Spirit

  339. who gives life.

  340. And this is

  341. fairly close

  342. to what

  343. systematic theologians

  344. call

  345. sanctification,

  346. if you ever

  347. read theology,

  348. the breaking

  349. of sin's

  350. power

  351. in us.

  352. And notice

  353. that this new life

  354. comes from nothing

  355. that we do,

  356. it comes from

  357. the Holy Spirit

  358. in Christ.

  359. It's not a result

  360. of years

  361. of spiritual

  362. discipline,

  363. it's a gift.

  364. Now look

  365. at verse 3.

  366. For what the law

  367. was powerless

  368. to do,

  369. because it was

  370. weakened

  371. by the flesh,

  372. God did

  373. by sending

  374. his own

  375. son

  376. in the likeness

  377. of sinful flesh

  378. to be a sin

  379. offering.

  380. And so

  381. God condemned

  382. sin

  383. in the flesh.

  384. Verse 2

  385. talked about

  386. the Holy Spirit

  387. and the new life,

  388. but this verse

  389. speaks of another

  390. aspect,

  391. the killing off,

  392. the condemning

  393. of that recalcitrant

  394. streak

  395. within us,

  396. the condemning

  397. of sin,

  398. the death

  399. of Jesus

  400. as a sin

  401. offering.

  402. sin.

  403. The problem

  404. we've been

  405. talking about,

  406. this sin

  407. in our life,

  408. needs to be

  409. addressed

  410. honestly

  411. by God.

  412. Sin

  413. needs to be

  414. condemned,

  415. otherwise

  416. it will still

  417. continue to live

  418. amongst us.

  419. God acts

  420. here

  421. something like

  422. a judge

  423. in removing

  424. criminals

  425. from society.

  426. He condemns

  427. sin

  428. so that it

  429. might no longer

  430. be present.

  431. But God

  432. is a little bit

  433. different

  434. to human

  435. judges.

  436. Human judges

  437. send people

  438. to jail

  439. and find them

  440. and God

  441. condemns sin

  442. too,

  443. but differently.

  444. There are

  445. two main

  446. differences.

  447. Firstly,

  448. he absorbs

  449. the punishment

  450. in his

  451. own

  452. son.

  453. Now,

  454. in the original,

  455. there is

  456. an emphasis

  457. on the words

  458. his own

  459. son.

  460. I've got

  461. three sons

  462. and a

  463. daughter.

  464. And by using

  465. this phrase

  466. his own

  467. son,

  468. Paul is

  469. reminding us

  470. that

  471. God's

  472. love for

  473. us is

  474. so great

  475. that even

  476. his affection

  477. for his

  478. own

  479. son

  480. was called

  481. into account

  482. and was

  483. sacrificed

  484. at great

  485. cost.

  486. By his

  487. own

  488. son,

  489. God

  490. condemned

  491. sin.

  492. And that's

  493. why there is

  494. no more

  495. condemnation

  496. remaining

  497. for us.

  498. God

  499. is

  500. not

  501. free

  502. from

  503. condemnation

  504. because

  505. we now

  506. live

  507. perfect

  508. lives.

  509. I

  510. certainly

  511. don't

  512. and you

  513. don't

  514. either.

  515. It's

  516. not that

  517. there's

  518. no

  519. condemnation

  520. because

  521. God

  522. has

  523. suddenly

  524. relaxed

  525. his

  526. standards.

  527. It's

  528. not that

  529. there's

  530. no

  531. condemnation

  532. because

  533. we hope

  534. to do

  535. better

  536. in the

  537. future.

  538. There's

  539. no

  540. condemnation

  541. because

  542. God

  543. has

  544. dealt

  545. with it

  546. with

  547. his

  548. own

  549. son.

  550. At

  551. the cross

  552. God

  553. condemned

  554. sin.

  555. That

  556. absorbing

  557. of the

  558. condemnation

  559. of sin

  560. into

  561. himself,

  562. into

  563. his

  564. own

  565. son,

  566. makes

  567. God

  568. different

  569. to a

  570. human

  571. judge.

  572. But

  573. there's

  574. also a

  575. second

  576. way in

  577. which

  578. God

  579. is

  580. different

  581. to an

  582. ordinary

  583. judge.

  584. And

  585. that

  586. God

  587. is

  588. interested

  589. in

  590. imparting

  591. new

  592. life

  593. to

  594. people.

  595. The

  596. image

  597. of

  598. dying

  599. and

  600. then

  601. facing

  602. God's

  603. judgment,

  604. how

  605. people

  606. often

  607. think

  608. about

  609. this

  610. life,

  611. you

  612. know,

  613. you

  614. live

  615. your

  616. life

  617. and

  618. you

  619. die

  620. and

  621. then

  622. you

  623. go

  624. before

  625. God's

  626. judgment

  627. seat.

  628. That's

  629. true

  630. enough,

  631. but it

  632. overlooks

  633. the

  634. fact

  635. that

  636. God

  637. is

  638. not

  639. just

  640. interested

  641. in

  642. evaluating

  643. our

  644. lives

  645. at

  646. the

  647. end

  648. of

  649. them.

  650. He's

  651. more

  652. interested

  653. in

  654. now

  655. changing

  656. your

  657. life

  658. and

  659. renewing

  660. you

  661. and

  662. in

  663. giving

  664. you

  665. new

  666. life.

  667. God

  668. is

  669. far

  670. more

  671. involved

  672. in

  673. our

  674. lives

  675. than

  676. that

  677. earlier

  678. image

  679. might

  680. suggest.

  681. He's

  682. not

  683. like a

  684. judge

  685. to whom

  686. we are

  687. a

  688. stranger

  689. until

  690. we

  691. give

  692. an

  693. account.

  694. He

  695. is

  696. our

  697. Father

  698. who

  699. condemns

  700. sin

  701. and wants

  702. to

  703. impart

  704. new

  705. life

  706. to

  707. us

  708. even

  709. now.

  710. Judgment

  711. is

  712. not

  713. the

  714. end

  715. of

  716. life

  717. in

  718. God's

  719. eyes

  720. but

  721. the

  722. beginning

  723. of

  724. life.

  725. And

  726. you

  727. can

  728. see

  729. this

  730. new

  731. life

  732. mentioned

  733. in

  734. verse

  735. 2

  736. and

  737. in

  738. the

  739. next

  740. verse

  741. 4

  742. which

  743. speaks

  744. of

  745. this

  746. end

  747. result

  748. in

  749. order

  750. that

  751. the

  752. righteous

  753. requirement

  754. of

  755. the

  756. law

  757. might

  758. be

  759. fully

  760. met

  761. in

  762. us

  763. who

  764. live

  765. not

  766. according

  767. to

  768. the

  769. flesh

  770. but

  771. according

  772. to

  773. the

  774. spirit.

  775. God

  776. wants

  777. the

  778. good

  779. life

  780. for

  781. us.

  782. He

  783. wants

  784. that

  785. righteous

  786. life

  787. for

  788. us.

  789. The

  790. life

  791. that

  792. we

  793. might

  794. know

  795. about

  796. and

  797. even

  798. want

  799. and

  800. desire

  801. but

  802. we

  803. cannot

  804. attain

  805. it.

  806. God

  807. wants

  808. that

  809. life

  810. for

  811. us

  812. and

  813. the

  814. only

  815. way

  816. it

  817. can

  818. be

  819. obtained

  820. is

  821. through

  822. Jesus

  823. Christ.

  824. it

  825. was

  826. premature

  827. to

  828. think

  829. of

  830. God

  831. as

  832. being

  833. overly

  834. strict

  835. or

  836. lacking

  837. generosity.

  838. You

  839. can

  840. see

  841. that

  842. because

  843. he

  844. sent

  845. his

  846. own

  847. son.

  848. You

  849. can

  850. see

  851. it

  852. because

  853. he's

  854. interested

  855. not

  856. just

  857. in

  858. condemning

  859. people

  860. but

  861. in

  862. giving

  863. them

  864. new

  865. life

  866. according

  867. to

  868. his

  869. own

  870. spirit.

  871. The

  872. Christian

  873. gospel

  874. facts

  875. are

  876. that

  877. Jesus

  878. died

  879. and

  880. rose

  881. again.

  882. His

  883. death

  884. mysteriously

  885. took

  886. the

  887. place

  888. of

  889. our

  890. death

  891. and

  892. his

  893. life

  894. is

  895. mysteriously

  896. imparted

  897. to

  898. us

  899. through

  900. his

  901. Holy

  902. Spirit

  903. which

  904. gives

  905. life

  906. in

  907. every

  908. sense

  909. not

  910. just

  911. in

  912. the

  913. sense

  914. of

  915. bodily

  916. resurrection

  917. which

  918. we

  919. await

  920. but

  921. in

  922. that

  923. new

  924. obedience

  925. to

  926. God

  927. by

  928. which

  929. we

  930. can

  931. even

  932. resist

  933. that

  934. recalcitrant

  935. spirit

  936. within

  937. us

  938. when

  939. you

  940. become

  941. a

  942. Christian

  943. both

  944. this

  945. freedom

  946. from

  947. condemnation

  948. and

  949. this

  950. new

  951. life

  952. become

  953. yours

  954. and

  955. both

  956. of

  957. these

  958. death

  959. and

  960. resurrection

  961. are the

  962. gift

  963. of

  964. God

  965. God

  966. we

  967. will

  968. still

  969. continue

  970. to

  971. struggle

  972. against

  973. sin

  974. and

  975. we

  976. will

  977. still

  978. sin

  979. further

  980. on

  981. in

  982. chapter

  983. 8

  984. Paul

  985. says

  986. if

  987. Christ

  988. is

  989. in

  990. you

  991. your

  992. body

  993. may

  994. well

  995. be

  996. dead

  997. because

  998. of

  999. sin

  1000. yet

  1001. your

  1002. spirit

  1003. will

  1004. live

  1005. because

  1006. of

  1007. righteousness

  1008. God

  1009. intends

  1010. for us

  1011. the new

  1012. life

  1013. the righteous

  1014. life

  1015. with

  1016. him

  1017. and

  1018. both

  1019. of

  1020. these

  1021. a

  1022. freedom

  1023. from

  1024. condemnation

  1025. and

  1026. a

  1027. life

  1028. freed

  1029. to

  1030. serve

  1031. God

  1032. in

  1033. all

  1034. righteousness

  1035. are

  1036. God's

  1037. gift

  1038. God

  1039. is no

  1040. longer

  1041. just

  1042. a

  1043. judge

  1044. but

  1045. a

  1046. judge

  1047. who

  1048. gives

  1049. life

  1050. through

  1051. his

  1052. own

  1053. son

  1054. where

  1055. do

  1056. you

  1057. put

  1058. your

  1059. hope

  1060. for

  1061. a

  1062. right

  1063. standing

  1064. before

  1065. God

  1066. where

  1067. do

  1068. you

  1069. put

  1070. your

  1071. hope

  1072. for

  1073. a

  1074. renewed

  1075. life

  1076. of

  1077. righteousness

  1078. of

  1079. love

  1080. is it

  1081. in your

  1082. great

  1083. learning

  1084. that you

  1085. educate

  1086. yourself

  1087. to resist

  1088. the recalcitrant

  1089. spirit within

  1090. you

  1091. no that

  1092. won't

  1093. work

  1094. is it

  1095. in

  1096. some

  1097. ascetic

  1098. regime

  1099. of

  1100. strict

  1101. discipline

  1102. no that

  1103. will have

  1104. no effect

  1105. either

  1106. the only

  1107. place of

  1108. hope we

  1109. have for

  1110. a right

  1111. standing

  1112. before God

  1113. and the

  1114. hope of

  1115. living a

  1116. life

  1117. according to

  1118. God's

  1119. holy law

  1120. in righteousness

  1121. and love

  1122. is through

  1123. Christ

  1124. Jesus

  1125. let's

  1126. pray

  1127. our

  1128. father

  1129. especially

  1130. on this

  1131. father's

  1132. day

  1133. we praise

  1134. you

  1135. for showing

  1136. yourself to

  1137. be such

  1138. a kind

  1139. and generous

  1140. father

  1141. who knows

  1142. our weakness

  1143. and who

  1144. pays a

  1145. high price

  1146. to gain

  1147. our

  1148. freedom

  1149. father we

  1150. praise you

  1151. that you

  1152. want us

  1153. to lead

  1154. a new

  1155. life

  1156. in

  1157. Christ

  1158. Jesus

  1159. grant us

  1160. your spirit

  1161. that we

  1162. might live

  1163. according to

  1164. it

  1165. grant that

  1166. we might

  1167. live this

  1168. new life

  1169. grant that

  1170. we might

  1171. bear the

  1172. fruit of

  1173. that new

  1174. life and

  1175. that everyone

  1176. may see

  1177. how changed

  1178. we are

  1179. let our

  1180. light shine

  1181. in the

  1182. world

  1183. so that

  1184. people may

  1185. praise your

  1186. name

  1187. and we

  1188. ask it

  1189. for the

  1190. glory of

  1191. your son

  1192. Jesus

  1193. amen
