  1. Let me pray before we look at God's word together.

  2. Father, we thank you for your word.

  3. We thank you for your spirit

  4. who inspired these words for the Apostle Paul so long ago.

  5. We pray that your spirit might take this word tonight,

  6. enabling me to speak your word correctly and powerfully,

  7. that your spirit might work in our hearts,

  8. for we ask it in Jesus' name.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. Well, it's great that you're doing a sermon series on Romans.

  12. It's a wonderful book in the New Testament

  13. and written by the Apostle Paul to a Christian community.

  14. Actually, there was more than one church in Rome.

  15. You don't actually find the word church

  16. in the opening invitation of the letter,

  17. but to the saints at Rome.

  18. But there are different churches and different house groups

  19. you'll see when you get to the end of the book in chapter 16.

  20. He's never been to Rome before.

  21. He's writing to them to encourage them

  22. in terms of his anticipated arrival.

  23. He's writing to them to explain his gospel,

  24. to expound it,

  25. and to also encourage them

  26. with regard to his ongoing mission work.

  27. Now, you've been doing a series

  28. where you've been jumping from mountaintop to mountaintop, I think.

  29. I think last week was chapter 5, verse 1,

  30. and we've just picked up the end of chapter 7,

  31. and now really looking at 8, verses 1 to 4.

  32. And these mountaintop experiences,

  33. you've got the valleys filled in in 6 and 7,

  34. but chapter 8, verse 1,

  35. starts off with that word, therefore.

  36. And the therefore is a way of saying,

  37. this now follows from what I've said before.

  38. You might think at first glance,

  39. it follows from what's just happened in chapter 7.

  40. But in actual fact,

  41. it flows back to chapter 5.

  42. So you've done very well in your sermon series

  43. to sort of see 6 and 7 has got a,

  44. in a sense,

  45. it's like a digression.

  46. 6 and 7 is looking at what,

  47. how the law affects

  48. God's plan of salvation,

  49. and in particular,

  50. how Christ has set us free

  51. from that law.

  52. But the mountaintop of chapter 5,

  53. if you'll recall from last week,

  54. we've been justified through faith

  55. and we have peace with God

  56. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  57. So in chapter 80 says,

  58. Therefore,

  59. there is now no condemnation

  60. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  61. There's no condemnation.

  62. You see,

  63. there were Jews and Gentiles in Rome.

  64. And a Jew would know

  65. that the law was an oppressive regime

  66. which was so demanding.

  67. It was impossible

  68. to keep the law sinlessly.

  69. Lots of people tried,

  70. but in actual fact,

  71. it was their promising life,

  72. but was unable to fulfil that

  73. for the Jewish people.

  74. It actually brought condemnation upon it.

  75. It brought condemnation in a way in which

  76. if you break just one aspect of the law,

  77. then you've broken the whole law.

  78. You know,

  79. you can imagine a friend of mine

  80. very close to me.

  81. It was pulled over for speeding.

  82. And I said,

  83. sorry,

  84. the friend said,

  85. and that...

  86. I said to the officer,

  87. look,

  88. I may have been going over the speed limit

  89. a teensy,

  90. weensy little bit,

  91. but you know what?

  92. All day,

  93. I've been driving under the speed limit.

  94. So I reckon you should take

  95. all those kilometres per hour

  96. I was driving under the speed limit

  97. and then you can apply them to this

  98. and you'll find that I haven't actually

  99. broken the law at all.

  100. That went down like a lead balloon,

  101. I might add.

  102. It's sort of one of those things,

  103. if you break the law,

  104. you break the law.

  105. You can't say,

  106. well,

  107. look at all the good things I've done,

  108. because when you break God's law,

  109. judgment comes,

  110. condemnation comes.

  111. So the law brings condemnation.

  112. What happens to Christians

  113. with regard to the law?

  114. You see,

  115. in chapter 7,

  116. you'll see that the person in chapter 7

  117. is bound by the law,

  118. dead to that which held it captive.

  119. The man of Romans 7

  120. can't keep the law.

  121. He's unable to do so.

  122. Some people think the man in chapter 7

  123. is all about the Christian

  124. struggling with sin.

  125. I actually don't think

  126. that's what it's talking about.

  127. I think it's talking about

  128. the unbelieving Jew

  129. who is under God's condemnation,

  130. wants to keep the law,

  131. but can't keep the law

  132. because he's out of relationship with God.

  133. The law is actually good.

  134. In chapter 7,

  135. the law is spiritual.

  136. There's a good thing about law,

  137. but law has to be in relationship.

  138. Unless law is in relationship,

  139. you will always want to break it.

  140. You know those signs

  141. that you've seen on billboards,

  142. you know,

  143. don't look through this peephole here,

  144. and you think,

  145. hmm,

  146. let me think.

  147. Let me think.

  148. Might as well just fix up this thing.

  149. Yes.

  150. And then by a sign like that,

  151. you're automatically enticed

  152. to look through the hole,

  153. aren't you?

  154. Or when it says,

  155. bill posters,

  156. we prosecute it.

  157. Poor old bill posters,

  158. he's always going to get prosecuted.

  159. Anyhow,

  160. so people put up posters there.

  161. Now,

  162. you look through,

  163. when you get a law like that,

  164. you actually want to break it.

  165. But if you're in relationship

  166. with a lawgiver,

  167. it's very different.

  168. We had a house we lived in,

  169. had a very broken kind of concrete pathway

  170. coming up the driveway.

  171. And my wife has been saying to me,

  172. look,

  173. you know,

  174. why can't you just fix this?

  175. You know,

  176. can't you fix it?

  177. And,

  178. you know,

  179. I say,

  180. well,

  181. I'm not really,

  182. I didn't do concreting 101

  183. at Theological College,

  184. so I'm not really,

  185. I'm not really good at that.

  186. And,

  187. but then one day,

  188. while she was out,

  189. I hired a concrete man

  190. to come and lay the path for me.

  191. And,

  192. because it would be all wet cement,

  193. I put up a sign saying,

  194. don't step in the wet cement.

  195. Okay?

  196. My wife comes home,

  197. and she says,

  198. goodness,

  199. he's finally listened.

  200. He's got the pathway.

  201. And he's warned me by saying,

  202. don't step in the cement.

  203. Because I could easily have stepped in there,

  204. not thinking it was actually newly laid.

  205. The warning,

  206. the law,

  207. don't step on the cement,

  208. wet cement,

  209. is actually for her good.

  210. Because she's in relationship with me,

  211. she wants to abide by that law.

  212. She wants to keep that law.

  213. We've got an 11-year-old boy

  214. who lives next door.

  215. He's not really in relationship with me

  216. like my wife is.

  217. When he sees the sign,

  218. don't step in the wet cement,

  219. whoa,

  220. let's go.

  221. Let's do those little doggy marks.

  222. Anyhow.

  223. Or, you know,

  224. so-and-so loves so-and-so,

  225. or something like that.

  226. Because he sees that law

  227. as an invitation to break it,

  228. because he's not in relationship

  229. with a lawgiver.

  230. That's how the law works for Christians,

  231. you see.

  232. We're in relationship with God,

  233. therefore the law is not oppressive

  234. for us as Christians,

  235. we actually want to keep it.

  236. I actually asked the candidates tonight

  237. about the Ten Commandments.

  238. And you passed.

  239. Lucky Sam.

  240. And then I asked,

  241. how many of you actually keep

  242. the commandments perfectly?

  243. And of course,

  244. no one can.

  245. Except one man,

  246. Jesus.

  247. You know,

  248. because Jesus has kept

  249. the commandments perfectly,

  250. prevents us

  251. from being condemned

  252. by the law.

  253. I don't know if you've heard

  254. in your classical education,

  255. probably the older people

  256. would have heard the phrase

  257. Damocles sword.

  258. For younger ones,

  259. probably don't know it,

  260. but it's a,

  261. it goes back to a story,

  262. the Mediterranean king.

  263. And this king

  264. had a courtier,

  265. a courtier

  266. by the name of Damocles.

  267. And Damocles would have,

  268. you know,

  269. meals with the king

  270. and he's one of those

  271. sort of chatterboxes

  272. that just talks,

  273. talks, talks.

  274. You have people like that

  275. in your church?

  276. Anyhow,

  277. so people you might invite

  278. for dinner

  279. and they just chat,

  280. chat, chat.

  281. And he was just sick

  282. of Damocles.

  283. So he actually said to Damocles,

  284. give me your sword

  285. and I'm going to hang

  286. your sword

  287. over your head

  288. and I'm going to hold it up,

  289. I'm going to tie it up

  290. by a horse's hair.

  291. And then I want you

  292. to come and have dinner

  293. with me

  294. sitting under your own sword.

  295. Well,

  296. Damocles of course

  297. had to do what the king said.

  298. So,

  299. he came in fear

  300. and trembling.

  301. He could hardly

  302. eat his dinner.

  303. He had no appetite

  304. and what's more,

  305. he couldn't even start

  306. a conversation up.

  307. So the king was delighted.

  308. It worked.

  309. And so the phrase being,

  310. having,

  311. sitting under Damocles' sword,

  312. Damocles' sword

  313. hanging over your head

  314. means the threat

  315. of judgment.

  316. When Jesus says,

  317. people will come

  318. from the east and west

  319. and sit down

  320. and feast with Abraham

  321. in the kingdom of God.

  322. Jesus is saying

  323. that the feasting table

  324. for the people of God

  325. includes Old Testament saints

  326. like Abraham

  327. as well as New Covenant saints

  328. like us.

  329. Under the Old Covenant,

  330. the law

  331. was hanging

  332. as a judgment

  333. over the people of God.

  334. It's like Abraham

  335. and Moses

  336. and the rest of the

  337. Old Testament saints

  338. were sitting at the

  339. banquet table of God

  340. but the sword

  341. of God's law

  342. was hanging over them.

  343. Not by a horse's hair

  344. but something

  345. much more secure,

  346. the thread

  347. of God's promise.

  348. They could feast

  349. at God's table

  350. because they trusted

  351. that God

  352. would not bring

  353. the judgment on them.

  354. When Jesus arrives,

  355. he comes and sits

  356. at the same

  357. banqueting table

  358. but the sword

  359. of God's judgment

  360. falls upon Jesus.

  361. He actually satisfies

  362. all that the law

  363. requires and demands.

  364. He keeps the

  365. Ten Commandments.

  366. He's perfectly

  367. obedient to his

  368. Heavenly Father

  369. and what's more

  370. than that,

  371. he dies the death

  372. that you and I

  373. deserve.

  374. So that as New

  375. Covenant saints,

  376. when we come to

  377. the feasting,

  378. banqueting table

  379. of God,

  380. we no longer

  381. have the threat

  382. of God's law

  383. over us

  384. with its condemnation.

  385. That's what Paul

  386. means when he says

  387. we are not under

  388. law but under

  389. grace.

  390. In Romans 8.1,

  391. there is now

  392. no condemnation

  393. for those who

  394. are in Christ

  395. Jesus.

  396. Why?

  397. Because through

  398. Christ Jesus,

  399. the law of the

  400. spirit of life

  401. has set me free

  402. from the law

  403. of sin and death.

  404. You see,

  405. sin and death

  406. hang over us.

  407. Paul says

  408. elsewhere in

  409. 1 Corinthians,

  410. he says,

  411. the sting of

  412. death is sin

  413. but the power

  414. of sin is the

  415. law.

  416. It's a fascinating

  417. thought,

  418. isn't it?

  419. The sting of

  420. death is sin

  421. but the power

  422. of sin is the

  423. law.

  424. It's the law

  425. that condemns.

  426. It's the law

  427. that judges us.

  428. It's the law

  429. that sends us

  430. to our death.

  431. And what Jesus

  432. has done

  433. has taken

  434. that penalty

  435. away,

  436. has taken

  437. the condemnation

  438. that belongs

  439. to us

  440. as people

  441. who sin.

  442. You see,

  443. our God

  444. is a righteous

  445. God.

  446. He's a perfect

  447. God.

  448. He loathes sin

  449. even in his

  450. people.

  451. And he can't

  452. just turn a blind

  453. eye to sin.

  454. In order to

  455. save us,

  456. he has to deal

  457. with our sins.

  458. And the

  459. only way

  460. he could do

  461. it was to

  462. sin Jesus.

  463. If there was

  464. another way,

  465. he'd have done

  466. so.

  467. Such as the

  468. depths of

  469. God's love

  470. is that the

  471. most excruciating

  472. way,

  473. the only way

  474. in which we

  475. could be freed

  476. from the

  477. condemnation of

  478. the law,

  479. is if Jesus

  480. stands in

  481. our place.

  482. Imagine you

  483. four

  484. confidants

  485. at the

  486. day of

  487. judgment.

  488. Scary

  489. thought.

  490. Here is

  491. God's

  492. throne.

  493. And God

  494. has a line

  495. of people

  496. coming up.

  497. And as each

  498. person stands

  499. before the

  500. throne of

  501. God,

  502. Gabriel goes

  503. off and gets

  504. their DVD

  505. of their

  506. life.

  507. You've just

  508. seen Pol Pot.

  509. Idi Amin,

  510. a few other

  511. awful chaps,

  512. and you see

  513. a video of

  514. their life,

  515. you don't

  516. have to play

  517. for very long,

  518. and God

  519. says,

  520. judgment,

  521. death.

  522. Then

  523. James,

  524. you're next.

  525. You're

  526. alphabetically

  527. ahead of your

  528. sister,

  529. you see.

  530. And you

  531. stand before

  532. the throne

  533. of God.

  534. And Gabriel

  535. goes off to

  536. get James's

  537. DVD.

  538. You're

  539. shaking in

  540. your boots.

  541. Every thought

  542. that you've

  543. ever had

  544. is captured

  545. in this

  546. DVD.

  547. Every

  548. wrongdoing,

  549. every act,

  550. every

  551. transgression

  552. of the Ten

  553. Commandments

  554. is there,

  555. even the

  556. ones your

  557. parents didn't

  558. know about,

  559. nor your

  560. minister,

  561. father.

  562. But you

  563. know about

  564. it,

  565. and God

  566. knows about

  567. it.

  568. And then

  569. up on the

  570. screen,

  571. the DVD,

  572. sorry,

  573. it's over

  574. there,

  575. isn't it?

  576. Wow,

  577. it's hot,

  578. isn't it?

  579. Up on the

  580. screen,

  581. comes the

  582. Jesus video,

  583. a DVD of

  584. Jesus'

  585. life,

  586. and his

  587. death.

  588. faith.

  589. And God

  590. says to

  591. James,

  592. enter into

  593. my kingdom.

  594. Jesus has

  595. done it

  596. for you.

  597. He's lived

  598. the life you

  599. could not

  600. live,

  601. and died

  602. the death

  603. that you

  604. deserve.

  605. That's

  606. fabulous,

  607. isn't it?

  608. If you've

  609. put your

  610. faith in

  611. Jesus,

  612. then you

  613. can stand

  614. where James

  615. stands.

  616. You can

  617. stand where

  618. Jesus

  619. stands.

  620. and Jesus

  621. has done

  622. it all.

  623. The law

  624. that was

  625. powerless

  626. to do,

  627. in that it

  628. was weakened

  629. by the

  630. sinful

  631. nature,

  632. what the

  633. law was

  634. powerless

  635. to do,

  636. God did

  637. by sending

  638. his own

  639. son in

  640. the likeness

  641. of sinful

  642. flesh to

  643. be a sin

  644. offering.

  645. That's what

  646. Jesus did.

  647. That's why

  648. the law

  649. is spiritual,

  650. you see.

  651. In actual

  652. fact,

  653. the law

  654. does save

  655. us,

  656. because Jesus

  657. has kept

  658. the law

  659. for us.

  660. I was

  661. talking to

  662. the

  663. Confirmese

  664. beforehand,

  665. I was

  666. talking about

  667. the Lord's

  668. Supper,

  669. when you

  670. take Holy

  671. Communion.

  672. You

  673. experienced

  674. saints who've

  675. taken the

  676. Lord's

  677. Supper for

  678. many years

  679. would know

  680. why you've

  681. got two

  682. elements in

  683. Holy

  684. Communion,

  685. the bread

  686. and the

  687. wine.

  688. But why

  689. do we

  690. take the

  691. wine?

  692. Jesus said

  693. I'm the

  694. bread of

  695. life,

  696. he didn't

  697. say I'm

  698. the wine

  699. of life.

  700. So why

  701. is there

  702. bread and

  703. wine?

  704. And we

  705. don't have

  706. soap and

  707. water in

  708. baptism,

  709. as you'll

  710. see when I

  711. baptise Ali

  712. tonight,

  713. it's just

  714. water.

  715. So why

  716. bread and

  717. wine?

  718. Well the

  719. bread is

  720. Jesus'

  721. life.

  722. I'm the

  723. bread of

  724. life,

  725. his life,

  726. his perfect

  727. obedience in

  728. place of

  729. my frail,

  730. flawed,

  731. sinful life.

  732. But it's

  733. not just

  734. that, it's

  735. also his

  736. death.

  737. The death

  738. that I

  739. deserve is

  740. what Jesus

  741. has undergone

  742. for me.

  743. So when

  744. you take

  745. Holy

  746. Communion or

  747. the Lord's

  748. Supper,

  749. think of

  750. Jesus'

  751. life and

  752. Jesus'

  753. death.

  754. it will

  755. help you

  756. focus on

  757. the truths

  758. that Paul

  759. is preaching

  760. when he

  761. says there

  762. is no

  763. condemnation

  764. for those

  765. who are

  766. in Christ

  767. Jesus.

  768. For he

  769. condemned

  770. sin in

  771. sinful man

  772. in order

  773. to the

  774. righteous

  775. requirement

  776. of the

  777. law.

  778. I don't

  779. know why

  780. the NIV

  781. has

  782. requirements,

  783. it shouldn't

  784. be plural,

  785. it's actually

  786. a singular

  787. in the

  788. original.

  789. The

  790. righteous

  791. requirement

  792. of the

  793. law is

  794. the death

  795. penalty.

  796. He uses

  797. that same

  798. phrase

  799. elsewhere

  800. in chapter

  801. 2,

  802. where he's

  803. talking about

  804. the death

  805. penalty.

  806. So here

  807. Jesus has

  808. taken the

  809. death penalty

  810. for us,

  811. that's the

  812. righteous

  813. requirement of

  814. the law,

  815. in order

  816. that we

  817. then might

  818. live,

  819. not according

  820. to the

  821. sinful nature,

  822. but according

  823. to the

  824. spirit.

  825. So the

  826. spirit of

  827. Christ Jesus

  828. has now

  829. set us

  830. free,

  831. not only

  832. from the

  833. guilt of

  834. sin,

  835. but from

  836. the power

  837. of sin,

  838. so that

  839. we might

  840. live as

  841. Christ wants

  842. us to

  843. do.

  844. Tonight is

  845. not so much

  846. a graduation

  847. for these

  848. four young

  849. people,

  850. but rather a

  851. step along

  852. the path.

  853. They've been

  854. nurtured in

  855. Christian families

  856. and we thank

  857. God for that.

  858. What a powerful

  859. promise it is

  860. for Christian

  861. parents to

  862. know that

  863. their children

  864. are covered

  865. by God's

  866. grace and

  867. to bring

  868. them up and

  869. raise them

  870. up in

  871. covenant love

  872. so that now

  873. they can

  874. profess before

  875. you all,

  876. not that you

  877. had any doubt

  878. beforehand,

  879. but profess

  880. before you

  881. that they

  882. have turned

  883. to Christ.

  884. And we're

  885. going to do

  886. that symbolically

  887. tonight and

  888. I'm going to

  889. lay hands on

  890. them as an

  891. indication,

  892. an ancient

  893. sign of God's

  894. blessing and of

  895. prayer for these

  896. people,

  897. that they might

  898. continue strong

  899. in Christ because

  900. God has

  901. taken away

  902. their sins,

  903. as far as

  904. the east is

  905. from the west

  906. so far as

  907. God removed

  908. our sins

  909. from us.

  910. The joy of

  911. the Spirit

  912. gives us a

  913. desire to

  914. follow him,

  915. a desire to

  916. be obedient,

  917. a desire to

  918. bring forth the

  919. fruit of the

  920. Spirit and the

  921. obedience which

  922. springs from

  923. faith.

  924. That's what

  925. Paul is

  926. concerned about

  927. and elsewhere in

  928. this book as

  929. beforehand,

  930. he talks of

  931. the way in

  932. which the

  933. fruit of the

  934. Spirit comes

  935. forth by the

  936. obedience of

  937. faith and

  938. that's the

  939. work of the

  940. Spirit in

  941. us.

  942. We'll never

  943. be sinless in

  944. this life.

  945. We'll always

  946. need to keep

  947. repenting of

  948. our sins but

  949. there is growth

  950. in grace and

  951. so Paul elsewhere

  952. prays for the

  953. saints at

  954. Corinth that

  955. they might be

  956. changed from

  957. one degree of

  958. glory to

  959. another and

  960. this comes by

  961. the Spirit of

  962. God's grace,

  963. grace by the

  964. Lord who is

  965. the Spirit.

  966. So tonight's a

  967. great night,

  968. great night for

  969. you four guys

  970. and for your

  971. families,

  972. parents and

  973. godparents that

  974. as you profess

  975. Christ tonight

  976. that you're

  977. saying you are

  978. no longer

  979. condemned,

  980. Christ has

  981. taken that

  982. penalty for

  983. you and set

  984. you free,

  985. free to live a

  986. life which

  987. honors him and

  988. which brings

  989. others to a

  990. knowledge of

  991. the Lord Jesus

  992. and if you're

  993. here tonight,

  994. perhaps you're a

  995. friend of the

  996. family,

  997. don't normally

  998. come to church

  999. and you think

  1000. what is that

  1001. man talking

  1002. about at the

  1003. front?

  1004. Well you know

  1005. the best person

  1006. to ask is one

  1007. of these.

  1008. Ask them,

  1009. they've been

  1010. well prepared for

  1011. tonight,

  1012. ask them why

  1013. they're going to

  1014. stand up and

  1015. say to you,

  1016. I turn to

  1017. Christ and

  1018. ask them why

  1019. it's important

  1020. that you too

  1021. turn to Christ

  1022. because if you

  1023. don't,

  1024. God's

  1025. condemnation

  1026. will rest

  1027. upon you

  1028. and it

  1029. won't be the

  1030. Jesus video

  1031. but the video

  1032. of your own

  1033. life which

  1034. will not

  1035. stand the

  1036. test of

  1037. God's

  1038. righteous

  1039. judgment.

  1040. Only in

  1041. Christ are

  1042. we free

  1043. of condemnation.

  1044. Let's pray.

  1045. heavenly

  1046. father we

  1047. thank you

  1048. for the

  1049. inestimable

  1050. gift of

  1051. salvation in

  1052. Christ.

  1053. We thank you

  1054. for his life

  1055. and his death

  1056. on our behalf

  1057. and we pray

  1058. for these four

  1059. young people

  1060. that you would

  1061. as you have

  1062. brought them

  1063. safe thus far

  1064. that you would

  1065. continue to

  1066. strengthen them

  1067. as your

  1068. disciples to

  1069. the glory of

  1070. your name

  1071. for we ask

  1072. it for

  1073. Jesus'

  1074. sake.

  1075. Amen.
