  1. Let me add my welcome to you.

  2. My name is Sam.

  3. I'm one of the pastoral team here at St. Paul's,

  4. and it is really good to see a bunch of faces

  5. that I don't know very well.

  6. Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet some of you

  7. over dinner at the after party after the service,

  8. but if I don't get the chance to chat to you,

  9. consider this a welcome,

  10. and hopefully I will get to at some point

  11. in the not-too-distant future.

  12. I'm going to pray,

  13. and then we're actually going to have a look

  14. at that passage that Helen just read out for us.

  15. In particular, we're going to focus on just four verses

  16. right at the beginning of it.

  17. And try and see if we can understand

  18. what it is that God is saying to us.

  19. That's what we believe the Bible is.

  20. It's God's way of talking to us and teaching us things.

  21. And so we're going to try and understand

  22. just those four verses tonight

  23. and try and think what does that mean for us individually.

  24. So how about I pray,

  25. and then we'll get stuck into it.

  26. Father God, we thank you for bringing us here tonight.

  27. We thank you for a beautiful day.

  28. We thank you for warm weather.

  29. We thank you for the Bible, which is your word.

  30. And we ask that you would help us to understand it tonight

  31. so that we might see you more clearly

  32. and know what it means to follow you.

  33. Amen.

  34. I wonder if you've ever felt like you weren't welcome,

  35. felt like you didn't belong somewhere.

  36. A couple of weeks ago,

  37. it's probably a little over a month ago now,

  38. the staff team that I'm a part of here at St. Paul's

  39. allocated a half a day to spend together

  40. to do something fun.

  41. Now, at my very enthusiastic recommendation,

  42. we landed on spending the day doing lawn bowls.

  43. Now, before you knock it,

  44. it's actually a really fun afternoon.

  45. But it's fair to say that for a 29-year-old

  46. and for pretty much all of the staff,

  47. it's a cross-cultural experience.

  48. And when we arrived at the bowling club that we had chosen,

  49. we eventually figured out which door

  50. we were supposed to walk into.

  51. We walked in, we were met by some carpet

  52. that wasn't that dissimilar to the lovely carpet

  53. that we're standing on now.

  54. We were met by an almost empty room.

  55. There was one table of slightly older men

  56. who were sitting there drinking,

  57. and they were, at best, disinterested,

  58. at worst, angry that we were in the room.

  59. And we kind of looked around,

  60. trying to find a staff member who could help us,

  61. but there was no one.

  62. There was just a kind of crumpled up,

  63. stained sign-in book that was on a table in front of us

  64. that we were kind of supposed to use our powers of deduction

  65. to figure out how things worked.

  66. Eventually, we'd been in there for about 10 minutes,

  67. and a staff member appears.

  68. That staff member then proceeded to try and convince us

  69. that we didn't have a booking for that day.

  70. After producing the voucher and a receipt,

  71. she conceded.

  72. At which point, the kitchen staff came out

  73. to let us know that we didn't have a booking for that day

  74. and they weren't going to be ready to cook lunch for us.

  75. A bit more back and forth,

  76. and eventually they went away

  77. and tried to figure out what they were going to give us for food.

  78. They stood around with us for a little while,

  79. and eventually they figured out that what needed to happen

  80. was to give us some lawn bowls

  81. and send us out onto the bowling green.

  82. But even once we got out there

  83. and we were left to our own devices,

  84. there was still this sense that the table of men inside,

  85. they put us on the green right in front of the window.

  86. I'm not sure if it was a ploy or not,

  87. but there was this sense that those men were inside

  88. watching and laughing.

  89. They may not have been,

  90. but that was how it felt.

  91. Because we're sitting there fumbling about at a sport

  92. that most of us haven't done before,

  93. and we're just feeling completely out of place.

  94. We didn't have the right clothes.

  95. We didn't know what the etiquette was.

  96. We weren't using the correct words for the correct things.

  97. And we just felt like outsiders,

  98. like we didn't belong.

  99. It's not a very fun feeling,

  100. but the reality is that for some of us,

  101. that might be how church feels.

  102. It might be that this is the first time in a long time

  103. that you've been in a church.

  104. Maybe you've never been before

  105. because you just weren't sure

  106. that you would actually fit in with churchy people.

  107. You dress different, you swear, you smoke,

  108. you've got a tattoo,

  109. and you've never really been keen on singing in public.

  110. And so the idea of coming to a church,

  111. you just kind of went,

  112. they're just going to stare at me.

  113. Or maybe you've even been to a church

  114. and experienced that sense of,

  115. everybody's looking at me like I'm strange.

  116. There's just this feeling that I don't belong

  117. and maybe I'm not good enough

  118. to be in this group of people.

  119. Now, if you've ever felt like that,

  120. sadly, you're not alone.

  121. I think that as long as there has been churches,

  122. there's been people in those churches

  123. acting as if they had the right to decide

  124. who should be in and who should be out.

  125. And so throughout all of history,

  126. there's been people wandering into churches

  127. and wandering out just as quickly

  128. because they didn't feel like they belonged.

  129. Now, I'm not just pointing the finger

  130. at those other churches that do that,

  131. because the reality is,

  132. if I'm really honest,

  133. there are people that I meet in my life,

  134. there are people that I see

  135. when I'm out at the shops

  136. or out with my friends,

  137. and deep down,

  138. I don't really want them

  139. to be sitting next to me

  140. the next Sunday in church.

  141. For whatever reason,

  142. there's something about them

  143. that I don't really like,

  144. and I just don't think

  145. that they should be a part

  146. of the church community.

  147. And so if you're here this evening

  148. and you're feeling unwelcome,

  149. you're feeling like out of place,

  150. I want to start by saying sorry,

  151. because that's not how it's supposed to work.

  152. That's not what the church is supposed to be.

  153. I mean, in some senses,

  154. that's how the world works.

  155. You hang out with the people that you are like.

  156. You hang out with the people you get on with.

  157. So if you don't like lawn bowls,

  158. you don't hang out at the bowling club.

  159. If you like boats,

  160. you hang out with people who like boats.

  161. If you skate,

  162. you hang out with people who skate.

  163. If you're into philosophy,

  164. you hang out with people

  165. who like to talk about philosophy.

  166. But the church is supposed to be different.

  167. See, the church is supposed to be

  168. a group of people

  169. that have been gathered together by God,

  170. and the only thing

  171. that they've got in common

  172. is that Jesus has saved them.

  173. I mean, people should look at the church

  174. and go,

  175. it just doesn't make sense.

  176. They should go,

  177. how is it possible that that guy

  178. and that girl,

  179. who are completely different,

  180. can have such a deep friendship.

  181. But the sad reality is,

  182. in churches all over the world right now,

  183. there are still people acting like

  184. they get to decide

  185. who's in and who's out.

  186. Even across Australia today,

  187. there are people who want to know Jesus,

  188. who want to find out more,

  189. but feel unwelcome

  190. to walk into a building like this,

  191. because they're worried

  192. that they're going to get judged

  193. or looked down on.

  194. And that is terrible.

  195. But in there,

  196. in that what is a disgusting situation,

  197. there is a huge encouragement.

  198. In that reality,

  199. is the best news

  200. that you have ever heard.

  201. Hiding in that unwelcome environment

  202. is the gospel.

  203. And I want to show you why,

  204. from the passage that Helen read out for us.

  205. If you've got it in front of you,

  206. that'll be helpful.

  207. If not, you can listen

  208. and I'll read out the key bits.

  209. But in Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  210. in verse 13,

  211. this is what's going on.

  212. It says,

  213. people were bringing little children to Jesus

  214. to have him touch them,

  215. but the disciples rebuked them.

  216. So you get it,

  217. it's a pretty simple scene.

  218. Jesus is the miracle worker.

  219. Jesus is the impressive teacher.

  220. And so everybody wants to,

  221. you know,

  222. send their kids in

  223. so that they can maybe

  224. catch some of the magic.

  225. You know,

  226. if maybe Jesus puts their hands on them,

  227. then they'll get into

  228. the right private school.

  229. Or they want some of the good blessing,

  230. the good stuff that Jesus is offering.

  231. But the disciples

  232. get in the way pretty quickly.

  233. They're like,

  234. look,

  235. Jesus is busy.

  236. He's got things to do.

  237. And now,

  238. before we nail the disciples

  239. for being jerks,

  240. we've got to realize

  241. that we actually treat kids

  242. the same way now.

  243. Like,

  244. we actually do the same

  245. sort of thing.

  246. At best,

  247. kids are something to be survived

  248. or tolerated.

  249. At worst,

  250. they're something to be avoided

  251. or pushed to the side.

  252. I mean,

  253. think about it.

  254. We have restaurants

  255. and cinemas

  256. and churches

  257. where kids aren't supposed to be.

  258. There are special places

  259. you can pay extra

  260. for the privilege

  261. of being free

  262. of the burden of children.

  263. children.

  264. We look down on them

  265. and it's almost logical.

  266. Because when you think about it,

  267. kids don't actually

  268. contribute anything,

  269. do they?

  270. They're kind of freeloaders.

  271. I mean,

  272. seriously,

  273. if you're a parent,

  274. and I am now,

  275. I'm six months into parenthood,

  276. and kids

  277. don't actually offer anything.

  278. They just take time

  279. and energy

  280. and resources

  281. from hardworking adults

  282. like you and me.

  283. And so in one sense,

  284. it's completely valid

  285. that the disciples go,

  286. these kids don't deserve

  287. any special treatment.

  288. They don't deserve

  289. front row seats for Jesus.

  290. There's more important

  291. people around.

  292. Now,

  293. as I said,

  294. I've been a father

  295. for almost six months

  296. and my little boy

  297. has a pretty basic routine.

  298. He sleeps

  299. not as much

  300. as we want him to.

  301. He wakes up screaming

  302. because he's hungry.

  303. He eats a little bit.

  304. He throws up a little bit.

  305. He poos a little bit.

  306. And then he whinges

  307. and wriggles around

  308. on the floor.

  309. There's not a lot

  310. of contribution

  311. from him so far

  312. in our family unit.

  313. He doesn't help

  314. with chores.

  315. He doesn't pay rent.

  316. He just takes time

  317. and energy

  318. from me and Sal.

  319. Now,

  320. we love him,

  321. just so we're clear.

  322. But he's not

  323. a major contributor

  324. in our family.

  325. Now,

  326. imagine with me

  327. for a second

  328. that my wife

  329. wins a prize for two.

  330. It's an all-expenses-paid,

  331. first-class,

  332. holiday for two

  333. around the world,

  334. finest hotels,

  335. limousines,

  336. everything.

  337. Now,

  338. which two members

  339. of my family

  340. deserve,

  341. let me underline that,

  342. deserve

  343. to go on that holiday?

  344. Now,

  345. you might be less selfish

  346. than me,

  347. but if we're really honest,

  348. it's fair to say

  349. that me and my wife

  350. deserve the holiday.

  351. We're the ones

  352. who do the cleaning,

  353. we're the ones

  354. who change nappies,

  355. we're the ones

  356. who make our own way

  357. to the bathroom

  358. when that needs to happen.

  359. And so,

  360. it's fair enough

  361. that out of the three of us,

  362. we are the most deserving

  363. of that extra privilege.

  364. Now,

  365. it's not that we don't love

  366. our boy,

  367. but we're the ones

  368. doing the work.

  369. And we're older,

  370. and we'll enjoy it more,

  371. and we'll appreciate it.

  372. It's not that

  373. our son's not important,

  374. it's just that

  375. he's less important

  376. than us.

  377. Now,

  378. just so we're clear again,

  379. my boy comes first

  380. in our family

  381. because he needs to.

  382. But you can understand

  383. at least a little bit

  384. of what's going through

  385. the head of the disciples.

  386. Now,

  387. they're not saying

  388. children are

  389. just unimportant

  390. and insignificant

  391. and don't matter.

  392. They're just saying

  393. children are less important.

  394. I mean,

  395. let's just remember

  396. who we're talking about here.

  397. This is Jesus.

  398. This is the miracle worker.

  399. This is the healer.

  400. This is the teacher.

  401. This is the son of God.

  402. And so they're thinking

  403. maybe there's more

  404. important people here

  405. who need to get

  406. to Jesus first.

  407. I mean,

  408. he's not going to be

  409. around forever.

  410. We're going to make

  411. the most of his time.

  412. There could have been

  413. doctors or lawyers

  414. or politicians,

  415. you know,

  416. really important people.

  417. And the disciples

  418. are doing exactly

  419. what we would probably do.

  420. We start sorting out

  421. who is the most

  422. important people,

  423. who are the most

  424. worthy people

  425. and we'll give them

  426. a shot at looking

  427. at Jesus first.

  428. So the children

  429. in this passage

  430. and children in general

  431. don't deserve

  432. any special treatment

  433. from God.

  434. They don't deserve

  435. this free

  436. jump to the front

  437. of the queue pass.

  438. And interestingly,

  439. Jesus doesn't actually

  440. argue the point

  441. when he responds

  442. to his disciples.

  443. I don't know if you

  444. noticed that.

  445. Jesus doesn't turn around

  446. and go,

  447. disciples,

  448. you idiots.

  449. Children do deserve

  450. my blessing.

  451. They are more important

  452. than everyone else.

  453. Let them to the front.

  454. Listen to what he does say

  455. back in the passage

  456. at verse 14.

  457. When Jesus saw this,

  458. he was indignant

  459. and he said to them,

  460. Let the little children

  461. come to me

  462. and do not hinder them

  463. for the kingdom of God

  464. belongs to such as these.

  465. I tell you the truth,

  466. anyone who will not

  467. receive the kingdom of God

  468. like a little child

  469. will never enter it.

  470. And he took the children

  471. in his arms,

  472. put his hands on them

  473. and blessed them.

  474. What's Jesus' response?

  475. He says,

  476. let them come.

  477. He doesn't say

  478. let them come

  479. because they're

  480. the most important.

  481. He says,

  482. let them come.

  483. Even though they're unworthy,

  484. even though they're unimportant,

  485. even though they're unimpressive,

  486. he says,

  487. my blessing,

  488. my kingdom,

  489. all the stuff

  490. that I want to give

  491. belongs to such as these.

  492. His kingdom belongs

  493. to the childlike.

  494. Now,

  495. the amazing irony

  496. in this passage

  497. is that the same way

  498. that the disciples

  499. are looking down

  500. on these children

  501. and the same way

  502. that sometimes

  503. people in churches

  504. look down on other people

  505. as being unworthy

  506. or undeserving,

  507. that is exactly

  508. how God sees

  509. each and every one of us.

  510. That is exactly

  511. how God sees

  512. even the disciples

  513. in this passage.

  514. Now,

  515. let me say that again

  516. because that's really important.

  517. The way we sometimes

  518. try and discern

  519. between who is

  520. more deserving

  521. of God's love

  522. and less deserving,

  523. we look at other people

  524. as less deserving.

  525. But when God sees us,

  526. he sees us

  527. as undeserving.

  528. He sees us

  529. as unworthy.

  530. He sees us

  531. as having no right

  532. whatsoever.

  533. When God looks at you

  534. and me

  535. and every single one

  536. of us,

  537. he sees what the disciples

  538. see in these kids,

  539. people who don't deserve

  540. his blessing.

  541. So on one level,

  542. if you're sitting

  543. in church tonight

  544. and you're feeling

  545. unwelcome,

  546. you're feeling like

  547. maybe you don't fit here,

  548. you're actually heading

  549. in the right direction.

  550. God is giving you

  551. some insight

  552. into how he sees you.

  553. He's giving you

  554. a chance to look

  555. from his perspective

  556. and understand

  557. that no one

  558. deserves to be able

  559. to call God Father.

  560. No one deserves

  561. to be able to call

  562. Jesus their Savior.

  563. No one deserves

  564. to be able to call

  565. Jesus their friend.

  566. And in this passage,

  567. the reason the children

  568. are unworthy

  569. is because they're children.

  570. All they need

  571. is a few years

  572. and they can deal

  573. with that issue

  574. but our issue

  575. is more significant.

  576. Our problem's

  577. not so easily fixed.

  578. See, we're unworthy

  579. of God

  580. because we spend

  581. our lives

  582. treating him

  583. like he doesn't matter.

  584. We're unworthy

  585. because we act

  586. like the one

  587. who made us

  588. and keeps us alive

  589. is just a resource

  590. that we can use

  591. instead of a God

  592. who deserves

  593. to be obeyed.

  594. We don't do

  595. what he tells us to.

  596. We do what he tells

  597. us not to do

  598. and the sad thing is

  599. even if we were

  600. to try and change now

  601. and become better people,

  602. even if we were

  603. to start obeying

  604. from this point forward,

  605. that doesn't change

  606. that we are

  607. disobedient people.

  608. That doesn't change

  609. that up to this point

  610. in our lives

  611. and in reality

  612. from here forward,

  613. we're going to keep

  614. ignoring him

  615. and making choices

  616. that we know

  617. he doesn't want us to.

  618. We have a habit

  619. when we talk

  620. about God

  621. of thinking about

  622. good people

  623. and bad people.

  624. We think of bad people

  625. as the people

  626. who murder

  627. or steal

  628. or abuse

  629. and good people

  630. are the ones

  631. who manage to avoid

  632. those serious bad things

  633. and those are the only

  634. two categories we've got.

  635. We've got good

  636. and bad

  637. but God has a higher

  638. standard than good.

  639. God is perfect

  640. in every way.

  641. There is nothing

  642. bad in him

  643. and he demands

  644. that if we would

  645. follow him,

  646. if we would call him

  647. father,

  648. if we would be a part

  649. of his family,

  650. then we need to be

  651. perfect as well.

  652. Now you might be good

  653. but you are not perfect.

  654. You might be better

  655. than everyone else

  656. in this room,

  657. you might be the best

  658. person you know

  659. but you are still

  660. not perfect.

  661. Which means

  662. in God's eyes

  663. you're not good enough.

  664. You don't deserve

  665. his blessing.

  666. You don't deserve

  667. all the good things

  668. that he has.

  669. Jesus is saying

  670. something really profound

  671. in these four verses.

  672. The kingdom of God

  673. he says,

  674. the blessing of God

  675. he says,

  676. belongs

  677. to such

  678. as these.

  679. The church

  680. will be full

  681. of such

  682. as these.

  683. Heaven

  684. will be full

  685. of such

  686. as these.

  687. But what does that mean?

  688. What does it mean

  689. to receive the kingdom

  690. like a little child?

  691. Well it's all

  692. the things

  693. that you spend

  694. your life

  695. trying to get out of.

  696. All the habits

  697. that you're trying

  698. to avoid.

  699. The dependence

  700. of children.

  701. The helplessness

  702. of children.

  703. See we live

  704. in a society

  705. where we value

  706. independence.

  707. We want our lives

  708. to be about

  709. what we can do.

  710. We want to be judged

  711. on our merits.

  712. We want to stand

  713. on our own two feet

  714. and we want

  715. what is fair

  716. and just

  717. for what we have done.

  718. But Jesus is saying

  719. if God gives you

  720. what is fair

  721. and just

  722. for what you have done

  723. then you have no chance

  724. of getting

  725. all the good things

  726. that he wants

  727. to give you.

  728. Being a Christian

  729. is about

  730. recognizing

  731. embracing

  732. and rejoicing

  733. in the fact

  734. that you

  735. need

  736. Jesus'

  737. help.

  738. I'll say that again.

  739. Being a Christian

  740. is about

  741. recognizing

  742. that you need

  743. Jesus' help

  744. embracing

  745. the fact

  746. that you need

  747. help

  748. from something

  749. outside yourself

  750. and rejoicing

  751. in the fact

  752. that God

  753. has provided

  754. that help

  755. that you need.

  756. These children

  757. come to Jesus

  758. because they are

  759. confident

  760. that he

  761. will love them.

  762. Not confident

  763. that they deserve

  764. his love.

  765. Not confident

  766. that they have

  767. some right

  768. to his blessing.

  769. But depending

  770. on the fact

  771. that he

  772. will love

  773. them

  774. in spite

  775. of how

  776. unimpressive

  777. they are.

  778. They bring

  779. nothing to

  780. the table.

  781. They just

  782. come eager

  783. and keen

  784. empty handed

  785. and Jesus

  786. welcomes

  787. them.

  788. That is

  789. what it means

  790. to receive

  791. the kingdom

  792. like a child.

  793. It's about

  794. recognizing

  795. you don't

  796. deserve it

  797. and asking

  798. God to

  799. welcome you

  800. anyway.

  801. the gospel

  802. message

  803. is a message

  804. of unworthy

  805. people

  806. offered

  807. forgiveness

  808. and love

  809. through the

  810. death

  811. and resurrection

  812. of Jesus.

  813. But don't

  814. mishear me

  815. when I say

  816. that.

  817. The fact

  818. that God

  819. has welcomed

  820. an imperfect

  821. person like

  822. me and the

  823. fact that

  824. tonight he

  825. might be

  826. ready to

  827. welcome an

  828. imperfect

  829. person like

  830. you

  831. doesn't mean

  832. that he's

  833. lowering his

  834. standards.

  835. It doesn't

  836. mean that he

  837. looked and

  838. realized there

  839. was no

  840. perfect people

  841. and thought

  842. well if I

  843. just lower

  844. a bit and

  845. just get

  846. kind of the

  847. top tier of

  848. good people

  849. heaven will

  850. still be

  851. alright.

  852. God has

  853. not lowered

  854. his standards.

  855. What it

  856. means is he

  857. loves you

  858. enough to

  859. pay the

  860. price that

  861. you're supposed

  862. to pay and

  863. instead give

  864. you his love

  865. and blessing.

  866. The famous

  867. author C.S.

  868. Lewis calls

  869. it the great

  870. exchange.

  871. Jesus comes

  872. to earth and

  873. in his whole

  874. life he

  875. is perfectly

  876. obedient to

  877. God in

  878. heaven.

  879. He does

  880. everything that

  881. God requires

  882. of him and

  883. instead of the

  884. love and

  885. privilege position

  886. that he deserves

  887. in heaven he

  888. takes on the

  889. punishment that

  890. every one of

  891. us deserves for

  892. telling God that

  893. he doesn't

  894. matter.

  895. He takes on the

  896. judgment and

  897. punishment that

  898. is ours and

  899. then instead of

  900. receiving the

  901. punishment that

  902. is ours we

  903. are given the

  904. life and

  905. blessing that

  906. is his.

  907. grace.

  908. It is the

  909. great exchange.

  910. If you're

  911. here and

  912. you're invited

  913. by someone

  914. maybe you're

  915. here because

  916. you're curious

  917. about God

  918. maybe you're

  919. here because

  920. you were just

  921. sick of saying

  922. no to that

  923. really persistent

  924. friend.

  925. Whatever brought

  926. you to this

  927. room God was

  928. behind it.

  929. if you're

  930. feeling like

  931. you don't

  932. really belong

  933. right now

  934. good.

  935. Because the

  936. reality is

  937. you don't

  938. deserve to

  939. be in God's

  940. family.

  941. You are

  942. unworthy of

  943. his love and

  944. forgiveness

  945. forgiveness.

  946. But so is

  947. everyone else

  948. around you.

  949. God sees

  950. your life.

  951. He knows

  952. who you

  953. are.

  954. He knows

  955. the deep

  956. dark secrets

  957. that you hope

  958. no one ever

  959. finds out and

  960. he says I

  961. love you

  962. anyway.

  963. He says if

  964. you would just

  965. stop trying to

  966. be good enough

  967. stop thinking

  968. at least I'm

  969. not as bad as

  970. other people

  971. and would just

  972. like a child

  973. depend on him

  974. he would

  975. welcome you

  976. with open

  977. arms.

  978. It doesn't

  979. matter what

  980. other people

  981. say to you

  982. no one else

  983. gets to decide

  984. whether or not

  985. you're good

  986. enough for

  987. heaven.

  988. Jesus is

  989. saying now

  990. you're not

  991. but I want to

  992. welcome you

  993. anyway.

  994. If you call

  995. yourself a

  996. Christian if

  997. you're sitting

  998. in this room

  999. and you've

  1000. been following

  1001. Jesus for a

  1002. while I just

  1003. want to be

  1004. clear that here

  1005. is what you're

  1006. saying according

  1007. to Jesus.

  1008. You're saying

  1009. that God

  1010. loves me even

  1011. though there is

  1012. nothing in me

  1013. that makes me

  1014. worthy of it.

  1015. That's what a

  1016. Christian is.

  1017. Someone who

  1018. recognizes they

  1019. don't deserve

  1020. God's love but

  1021. gets it anyway.

  1022. And so if

  1023. that's you maybe

  1024. you need to be

  1025. reminded that you

  1026. are never in a

  1027. position to look

  1028. at someone else

  1029. as being less

  1030. deserving of God's

  1031. love than you

  1032. are.

  1033. If you look at

  1034. someone and see

  1035. them as unworthy

  1036. that's right,

  1037. that's what the

  1038. Bible says but

  1039. you've got to see

  1040. yourself right

  1041. alongside them

  1042. because that's

  1043. what the gospel

  1044. says.

  1045. You don't deserve

  1046. God's love but

  1047. you get it because

  1048. God loves you.

  1049. You get it because

  1050. he chooses to

  1051. love you.

  1052. God loves you.

  1053. And maybe he is

  1054. challenging some of

  1055. us tonight to

  1056. maybe be a little

  1057. bit more humble in

  1058. the way that we

  1059. follow him.

  1060. To maybe be a

  1061. little bit more

  1062. welcoming.

  1063. To make this a

  1064. place that anyone

  1065. would feel comfortable

  1066. to walk into

  1067. regardless of what

  1068. they're wearing or

  1069. how they talk or

  1070. how strange this

  1071. all seems.

  1072. we started off

  1073. tonight lamenting

  1074. the fact that

  1075. churches are often

  1076. unwelcoming places,

  1077. that they're often

  1078. exclusive and I

  1079. said that hiding in

  1080. that reality was

  1081. good news.

  1082. The fact that the

  1083. church is full of

  1084. people like that,

  1085. people who make

  1086. others feel

  1087. unwelcome, it's not

  1088. a good thing but

  1089. at very least it's

  1090. proof that

  1091. everyone sitting

  1092. in church is just

  1093. as unworthy as

  1094. you.

  1095. If you have ever

  1096. been made to feel

  1097. unwelcome in a

  1098. church, if you have

  1099. ever been told by

  1100. Christians that you

  1101. don't deserve God's

  1102. love, that you

  1103. don't deserve to be a

  1104. part of their

  1105. community, I think

  1106. that's actually

  1107. evidence that they

  1108. don't deserve it

  1109. either.

  1110. And that's the

  1111. proof that it's

  1112. all about God

  1113. and it's all about

  1114. what God has

  1115. done.

  1116. Plus, you feeling

  1117. that unworthiness is

  1118. actually a necessary

  1119. starting point.

  1120. If you're going to

  1121. be able to receive

  1122. it like a child,

  1123. you've got to

  1124. recognise that you've

  1125. got nothing to

  1126. offer, that it

  1127. doesn't matter how

  1128. good you're going

1129. to be from now on,

  1130. it doesn't matter

  1131. how good you've

  1132. been until now,

  1133. you've got to

  1134. recognise it is all

  1135. about God's love

  1136. for you.

  1137. It is all about

  1138. the fact that he

  1139. sent Jesus to die

1140. for you and it is

  1141. all about the fact

  1142. that Jesus rose

  1143. again for you.

1144. It is not and it

  1145. will not ever be

  1146. about what you

  1147. have or haven't

  1148. done.

  1149. Lastly, you being

  1150. in this room now

  1151. is good news

  1152. because if God

  1153. can welcome me,

  1154. even though I'm

  1155. imperfect, and if

  1156. God can welcome

  1157. you, even though

  1158. you're imperfect,

  1159. and even though

  1160. we are completely

  1161. different people

  1162. with different

  1163. lives and different

  1164. experiences, maybe

  1165. somebody else will

  1166. walk into this

  1167. room one time and

  1168. see if God can

  1169. forgive that guy

  1170. and that girl,

  1171. then maybe he can

  1172. forgive me as well.

  1173. Jesus rebukes his

  1174. disciples in this

  1175. passage because they

  1176. block the way for

  1177. children that he had

  1178. already chosen to

  1179. love, that he had

  1180. already chosen to

  1181. welcome.

  1182. There is nothing

  1183. and no one that

1184. God will let get in

  1185. the way of you

  1186. coming to him.

  1187. Nothing you have

  1188. done and no other

  1189. person's opinion of

  1190. you can block how

  1191. much God loves you.

  1192. The challenge for you

  1193. tonight is, are you

  1194. ready like a child?

  1195. Are you ready to

  1196. admit that you have

  1197. nothing to offer to

  1198. him?

  1199. To recognize that

  1200. more than that, you

  1201. are undeserving of

  1202. his love, but you

  1203. are actually deserving

  1204. of his punishment, and

1205. yet still he wants to

  1206. welcome you.

1207. He wants to offer you

  1208. something better.

  1209. The question for you

  1210. tonight is, will you

  1211. accept his love with

  1212. open hands like a

  1213. child?

  1214. will you receive the

  1215. blessing that he wants

  1216. to give you?

  1217. Let's pray.

  1218. Father God, we want

  1219. to acknowledge that

1220. there is so much in

1221. our lives that is not

  1222. worthy of you.

  1223. That every single one

1224. of us in this room

  1225. spends time acting like

  1226. we're in charge, acting

1227. like we get to make

  1228. our own decisions and

  1229. you don't matter.

1230. And God, we want to

  1231. thank you that even

  1232. though we are so

  1233. disobedient, you still

  1234. love us.

1235. We want to thank you

  1236. for being willing to

1237. send Jesus to take our

  1238. punishment.

1239. We want to thank you

  1240. that it's not about

  1241. what other people think

1242. of us, it's about your

  1243. love which you have

  1244. shown us in Jesus.

1245. God, I want to pray

  1246. that if there are

  1247. people sitting in this

  1248. room right now who

  1249. don't yet know what

1250. it is to be welcomed

1251. by you, to be forgiven

1252. by you, to be loved

1253. by you, who don't yet

1254. know what it is to

  1255. call you Father, who

1256. don't know what it is

1257. to be sure that you

  1258. have reserved a place

  1259. for them in heaven,

  1260. Lord, I pray that

  1261. tonight you would

  1262. remove the barriers

  1263. and you would welcome

  1264. them.

1265. God, we thank you so

  1266. much for your love

  1267. and for sending

  1268. Jesus.

  1269. Amen.
