  1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,

  2. holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.

  3. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your

  4. mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect

  5. will. For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you, do not think of yourself more highly

  6. than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment in accordance with the measure of

  7. faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not

  8. all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to

  9. all the others. We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying,

  10. let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve. If it is teaching,

  11. let him teach. If it is encouraging, let him encourage. If it is contributing to the needs of

  12. others, let him give generously. If it is leadership, let him govern diligently. If it is showing mercy,

  13. let him do it cheerfully. This is the word of the Lord.

  14. Thank you, Lord.

  15. Lord Jesus, we thank you that you have come amongst us as a man, the creator God of the universe,

  16. and we thank you that you have laid down your life for our sins, and we thank you that in power your

  17. Father has raised you to life, never to die again. And we pray, Lord, that as we come to your word now,

  18. that we would sit under your lordship, that we would marvel at who you are, that we would be in

  19. submission to you, and that each one of us, Lord, that you would be leading us in your truth and

  20. growing us in Christ from the place where we are. Meet us in your word now, speak to us powerfully by

  21. your spirit, and we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  22. Some of you will have seen Peter Jensen, our Archbishop on Q&A on the ABC last Monday night. You can see it

  23. online if you missed it. He engaged in a very difficult debate with one woman in particular who

  24. unashamedly declared herself atheist. And it was an intimidating struggle between outspoken unbelief and

  25. unapologetic faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. And it wasn't merely a battle of intellect and reason, it was a

  26. spiritual battle that required considerable grace and wisdom in seeking a hearing on issues where people were

  27. not eager to listen. Sam preached on Romans 1 a few weeks ago, and he showed us that when we reject God, we choose a

  28. miserable path which is deathly. So Romans chapter 128 says,

  29. furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a

  30. depraved mind to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed,

  31. and depravity. They're full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters,

  32. insolent, arrogant, boastful. And they invent ways of doing evil. They disobey their parents. They're senseless,

  33. faithless, heartless, heartless, ruthless. And although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such

  34. things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but also to approve of those who

  35. practice them. And it defies reason. People will choose death over life. And in this bizarre manifestation of

  36. evil, that people actually get comfort of taking other people to death with them.

  37. We've had a great time in Romans. It explains God's gospel in the most magnificent way, and it's God's

  38. response to our deathly situation. The first eight chapters address many issues, God's anger with people,

  39. with men and women, why his judgment is just, why trying to keep the Ten Commandments and the rest of

  40. the Old Testament law can't make us good enough for God. It tells us why faith pleases God and how true

  41. peace and joy come through faith in Jesus Christ. Helps us to make sense of our ongoing struggle with sin.

  42. And then in chapter 8, verse 1, this magnificent expression of God's mercy, that there is now no

  43. condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And at the end of chapter 8, verse 39, that nothing,

  44. nothing at all in the entire universe is able to separate us from the love of Christ Jesus.

  45. And so in Christ, we have received extraordinary mercy from God.

  46. Chapters 9 to 11, they're a bit different, they're really substantial, but they're like an excursus or an

  47. excursion into the place of the Jews in God's plan of salvation. But chapter 12 brings us to where I'm

  48. preaching today and it begins with these words. And I'm not going to get past these two verses.

  49. Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,

  50. holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the

  51. pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, and then you will be able to

  52. test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will. I heard the great

  53. British Bible teacher, John Stott, preach on this passage. In my early days of being a believer,

  54. he spoke to an Easter service at the University of New South Wales just before the Billy Graham

  55. crusade in 1979. And he explained that the therefore is a terribly important little word,

  56. it's a turning point in the letter, it is a hinge. Everything that's gone before in Romans links now to

  57. what follows. It's where the rubber hits the road. We move from theory to practice, from what the good

  58. news is to how the good news transforms the lives of people who believe the gospel.

  59. God's action brings transformation. And so he says,

  60. therefore I urge you, brethren, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,

  61. holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual act of worship. That's the NIV.

  62. God's disposition towards us, God's disposition towards people is one of mercy. And it's a particular

  63. type of mercy, it's gut-wrenching pity and compassion. God knows the predicament that we're in,

  64. he knows our predicament better than we see it for ourselves and he responds to it with his gut-wrenching

  65. pity and compassion. I actually think chapter 12 verse 1 picks up from Romans 8, 38, 39.

  66. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present

  67. nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything in all creation will be able

  68. to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. So the first eight chapters

  69. of Romans reach this crescendo in the unquenchable love of God which is shown to his people.

  70. And it's the most amazing thing that God loves his creation and his heart goes out in pity

  71. and compassion to his people. And then he says to us, in view of God's love, in view of God's mercy,

  72. in view of God's compassion, offer yourselves, offer your bodies as living sacrifices.

  73. Now the people he's writing to are very familiar with animal sacrifices. They wouldn't have been

  74. shocked by some of the animal videos on our television when animals are slaughtered in Indonesia

  75. and other places. Whether it was the temple in Jerusalem or the meat markets in Rome, animals

  76. were slaughtered ritually and in the name of their God all the time. People saw animals killed,

  77. they saw where their food came from. And people were also used to the idea of substitution,

  78. an animal sacrificed in place of you. Not a bad deal. Not such a great life to be a sacrificial

  79. animal. You don't choose to be a sacrifice. Someone chooses you. Your body is put on the line

  80. for others. Your throat is cut and your body is burnt. The animal dies a death representative

  81. of the death that we deserve. Romans chapter 5 and 8 speak about Jesus' death as a sacrifice.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  82. In chapter 8 verse 3 it says,

  83. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did

  84. by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.

  85. And Romans 12 verse 1 tells us that the only appropriate response to what God has done

    Romans 12:1

  86. is to become a sacrifice. Fortunately for us it's a living sacrifice. It's a whole of life commitment.

  87. I urge you brothers in view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and

  88. pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.

  89. When I became a believer I was 18, about to turn 19.

  90. And I was already attending church.

  91. And within a few months of coming to Christ I joined a group that met in a friend's house.

  92. two-bedroom cottage, fibro cottage.

  93. Hardly a small group.

  94. And we worked through Luke's gospel verse by verse for a year.

  95. The groove was quite a contrast to church.

  96. We had a loving pastor

  97. dressed in black, just like Brian was this morning.

  98. See Brian this morning?

  99. Full collar, boy.

  100. And

  101. he smoked a pipe

  102. He was known as Puffing Billy.

  103. But he was absolutely committed to seeing people saved.

  104. And at the same time he was very stern.

  105. He was formal.

  106. He was a pretty lousy preacher.

  107. We had a sung robed choir.

  108. Members walked in every Sunday night at 7.15

  109. wearing their academic hoods.

  110. We had boring sermons.

  111. Chanted responses.

  112. I liked going

  113. but I grew

  114. and was nurtured in the house church.

  115. The leaders loved Jesus

  116. and his word.

  117. And they were

  118. really careful to try to teach it truthfully.

  119. and they worked hard at submitting

  120. to what they were learning.

  121. And so for me

  122. in the same place

  123. two very different

  124. experiences of Christians

  125. gathering to worship.

  126. In the house church

  127. we began to study

  128. this passage in Romans.

  129. This is year two.

  130. Year one was Luke.

  131. Year two was Romans.

  132. Took us all year.

  133. And we got to chapter 12

  134. verse 1

  135. Therefore I urge you brethren

  136. in view of God's mercy

  137. to offer your bodies

  138. as living sacrifices

  139. holy and pleasing to God

  140. this is your spiritual act of worship.

  141. And it was really difficult for me

  142. because I had been taught

  143. that worship was what you did on Sunday

  144. and you might have been taught that too.

  145. Some of our younger people

  146. may well just think

  147. that worship is singing

  148. because it's used like that as well.

  149. But this passage

  150. that we are in this morning

  151. talks about the whole of life

  152. as worship.

  153. Everything that we do

  154. whether we're here in church

  155. this morning

  156. or outside somewhere

  157. through the week

  158. everything that we do

  159. is a response

  160. to who God is.

  161. And I remember

  162. going to the rector

  163. to talk about it

  164. because I was confused

  165. and it threw it up for me

  166. and he said to me

  167. don't worry about it my boy

  168. church on Sunday

  169. is true worship.

  170. All these other groups

  171. well they're

  172. then things

  173. they're okay

  174. but they're not true worship.

  175. Church on Sunday

  176. is where you need to be.

  177. Well of course you need to be

  178. at church on Sunday

  179. it's a great place

  180. to gather with God's people

  181. and encourage one another.

  182. And I've spent a lot of time

  183. wrestling with that

  184. over the years.

  185. I gave you verbatim

  186. of what he said.

  187. I loved him

  188. and he's with the Lord now

  189. but I think he was wrong

  190. and I think he was wrong

  191. in two ways.

  192. Both those gatherings

  193. of Christ's church

  194. were true

  195. and valid expressions

  196. of devotion

  197. to Jesus.

  198. One of them

  199. was very formal

  200. and the other

  201. was very informal.

  202. Both involved

  203. believers

  204. coming together

  205. to encourage

  206. each other

  207. in Christ

  208. and learn from his word

  209. both involved

  210. worship

  211. or service.

  212. And the second error

  213. is to define

  214. worship narrowly

  215. as merely

  216. coming to church

  217. on Sunday.

  218. and a group

  219. or two

  220. through the week.

  221. Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12:1

  222. verse 1

  223. says it is

  224. a whole of life

  225. commitment

  226. a whole of life

  227. response to Christ

  228. a whole of life

  229. response to the gospel.

  230. And listen to the force

  231. of these words

  232. I urge you

  233. I implore you

  234. the great apostle

  235. pushes his point

  236. to the max

  237. in view of God's mercy

  238. in view of God's gospel

  239. in view of Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  240. chapter 1

  241. to Romans chapter 11

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  242. in view of what God

  243. has done

  244. we must respond.

  245. He has brought us

  246. from death to life

  247. if we have put

  248. our faith

  249. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  250. he has forgiven

  251. everything.

  252. He's wiped away

  253. sexual indiscretion

  254. he's taken our lies

  255. he's taken our

  256. unfaithfulness

  257. he's dealt with

  258. our dishonest

  259. dealings

  260. he's working

  261. on our hate

  262. everything that

  263. gets in the way

  264. of us relating

  265. to him

  266. Christ has dealt

  267. with at the cross

  268. and you see

  269. that this

  270. mercy of God

  271. is just enormous

  272. and so in Christ

  273. we have a new

  274. beginning

  275. this is God's

  276. momentous news

  277. and it's great news

  278. for anybody

  279. who is humble

  280. enough to listen

  281. and to respond

  282. absolutely liberating

  283. God deals with

  284. our sins

  285. he sets us free.

  286. Twelve chapters

  287. of Romans

  288. is summarised

  289. by three verses

  290. in Ephesians

  291. so if you want

  292. to learn

  293. Romans chapter

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  294. 1 to 12

  295. off by heart

  296. go to Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  297. chapter 2

  298. 8 to 10

  299. for it is by

  300. grace you have

  301. been saved

  302. through faith

  303. and this not

  304. from yourselves

  305. it is the gift

  306. of God

  307. not by works

  308. so that no one

  309. can boast

  310. for we are

  311. God's workmanship

  312. created in Christ

  313. Jesus to do

  314. good works

  315. which God

  316. prepared in advance

  317. for us to do

  318. so God saved

  319. us

  320. and now there is

  321. much that we can

  322. do for him

  323. we enter

  324. into the

  325. king's service

  326. we are his

  327. Romans chapter

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  328. 6 describes

  329. this as becoming

  330. a slave

  331. to a new

  332. master

  333. we're all

  334. slaves

  335. the issue

  336. is who

  337. is your

  338. master

  339. and so

  340. our spiritual

  341. act of worship

  342. that's the

  343. NIV again

  344. or service

  345. is total

  346. it's whole

  347. of life

  348. it's nothing

  349. more

  350. it's nothing

  351. less

  352. it's not

  353. about bottoms

  354. on seats

  355. on Sunday

  356. it's about

  357. living for

  358. Jesus

  359. choosing to

  360. live Jesus

  361. way

  362. making conscious

  363. decisions

  364. day by day

  365. moment by

  366. moment

  367. to do and

  368. respond to

  369. what Jesus

  370. wants and not

  371. what we are

  372. naturally inclined

  373. to do

  374. we will have

  375. all carry

  376. different burdens

  377. and struggles

  378. to this

  379. morning

  380. how do we

  381. honour Christ

  382. in the midst

  383. of those

  384. struggles

  385. what does it

  386. mean to

  387. trust him

  388. what does it

  389. mean to be

  390. faithful to

  391. him

  392. therefore I

  393. urge you

  394. brothers and

  395. sisters

  396. in view of

  397. God's mercy

  398. to offer your

  399. bodies as

  400. living sacrifices

  401. holy and

  402. pleasing to God

  403. this is your

  404. spiritual act

  405. of worship

  406. and I want

  407. to come back

  408. to that

  409. I want to

  410. say to you

  411. that spiritual

  412. act of

  413. service

  414. which is

  415. what the

  416. NIV has

  417. is a very

  418. unhelpful

  419. translation

  420. because it

  421. actually says

  422. this is your

  423. logical act

  424. of worship

  425. this is your

  426. reasonable act

  427. of worship

  428. it is the

  429. most reasonable

  430. it is the

  431. most rational

  432. thing to do

  433. and it's

  434. really interesting

  435. because I

  436. think we

  437. ought to be

  438. about feelings

  439. and emotions

  440. it ought to be

  441. part of our

  442. worship and

  443. who we are

  444. in Christ

  445. but it is

  446. really clear

  447. that this is

  448. much more than

  449. feeling good

  450. about the

  451. gospel

  452. Paul has

  453. taken pages

  454. and pages

  455. and chapters

  456. and chapters

  457. to explain

  458. his gospel

  459. and now in

  460. one verse he

  461. calls us to

  462. good thinking

  463. God does not

  464. ask us to

  465. throw away our

  466. minds to

  467. believe in him

  468. we are to

  469. use our minds

  470. and to see

  471. that the

  472. most logical

  473. response to

  474. what God

  475. has done

  476. is to give

  477. ourselves to

  478. him

  479. he's proved

  480. his love

  481. respond to

  482. it it defies

  483. logic not to

  484. atheism works

  485. furiously to

  486. deny God

  487. and do you

  488. know what

  489. they have to

  490. because if

  491. God is as

  492. good as the

  493. scriptures say

  494. he is

  495. then we are

  496. absolute fools

  497. to reject

  498. him

  499. the other

  500. part of this

  501. passage says

  502. do not

  503. conform any

  504. longer to the

  505. pattern of

  506. this world

  507. but be

  508. transformed by

  509. the renewing

  510. of your

  511. mind

  512. and then you

  513. will be able

  514. to test and

  515. approve what

  516. God's will is

  517. his good

  518. perfect and

  519. pleasing will

  520. see the minds

  521. are still in

  522. action in the

  523. second verse as

  524. well

  525. conformed or

  526. transformed

  527. the words

  528. presume that

  529. the usual

  530. ways conformity

  531. to be pressed

  532. or moulded into

  533. the ways of the

  534. world

  535. the word is

  536. age it's not

  537. world

  538. conformed to

  539. the ways of

  540. this age

  541. there's a

  542. contrast between

  543. this age in

  544. which we live

  545. in the age

  546. which is yet

  547. to come

  548. when Christ

  549. will be seen

  550. as king

  551. and the

  552. bible's very

  553. clear that we

  554. live in an

  555. age which is

  556. coming to an

  557. end it is

  558. temporary we

  559. become resident

  560. aliens with

  561. visitor permits

  562. old christian song

  563. is right when

  564. it says that

  565. this world is

  566. not our home

  567. we are only

  568. visiting this

  569. planet

  570. we are temporary

  571. residents of

  572. this age

  573. and we are

  574. heirs of the

  575. age to come

  576. we still live

  577. with the

  578. pressure of

  579. life here

  580. we see the

  581. same media

  582. we're subject

  583. to the same

  584. temptations as

  585. everybody else

  586. is subject

  587. to

  588. I think it's

  589. foolish to

  590. pretend that

  591. we're not

  592. drawn by

  593. sin and

  594. affected by

  595. sin

  596. it's better to

  597. be honest than

  598. not to hide our

  599. struggles

  600. and too many

  601. christians get

  602. caught out saying

  603. one thing and

  604. living completely

  605. differently

  606. it's hypocrisy

  607. which brings

  608. shame on the

  609. name of the

  610. lord jesus

  611. so the gospel

  612. calls us to

  613. break with our

  614. past to

  615. reject conformity

  616. to be

  617. transformed in

  618. our minds to

  619. be transformed in

  620. our thinking to

  621. think differently

  622. the ongoing

  623. transformation is

  624. envisaged it's

  625. not like we just

  626. arrived we don't

  627. have to do

  628. anything anymore

  629. this is ongoing

  630. the work of

  631. christy spirit in

  632. our lives

  633. the christian life

  634. is a journey where

  635. we are constantly

  636. learning how to

  637. think differently

  638. romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  639. talks about

  640. mindset

  641. verse 5

  642. those who live

  643. according to the

  644. sinful nature have

  645. their minds set

  646. on what that

  647. nature desires

  648. but those who

  649. live in accordance

  650. with the spirit

  651. have their minds

  652. set on what the

  653. spirit desires

  654. transformed is a

  655. wonderful word in

  656. the original language

  657. it's the word that

  658. we get metamorphosis

  659. from

  660. so to be

  661. transformed is to

  662. be metamorphosed

  663. the caterpillar spins

  664. its cocoon

  665. goes to sleep

  666. and it goes through

  667. the process of

  668. metamorphosis

  669. it changes

  670. it emerges from

  671. the cocoon

  672. transformed

  673. into the most

  674. magnificent moths

  675. and butterflies

  676. it's changed from

  677. a creature

  678. that crawls on

  679. its belly to a

  680. creature that

  681. flies

  682. it goes through

  683. radical regeneration

  684. same word is used

  685. of the lord jesus

  686. when he's

  687. transfigured in

  688. his heavenly

  689. form

  690. the disciples

  691. get a glimpse

  692. of his heavenly

  693. glory

  694. when we become

  695. christians

  696. the change

  697. begins

  698. it begins

  699. in our minds

  700. it begins

  701. with a change

  702. in thought

  703. a change

  704. in thinking

  705. a change

  706. in attitude

  707. towards god

  708. and towards

  709. his son

  710. the lord

  711. jesus christ

  712. but it moves

  713. beyond that

  714. and paul

  715. urges us

  716. to allow

  717. our minds

  718. to dwell

  719. in good

  720. places

  721. so philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  722. chapter 4

  723. finally brothers

  724. and sisters

  725. whatever is

  726. true

  727. whatever is

  728. noble

  729. whatever is

  730. right

  731. whatever is

  732. pure

  733. whatever is

  734. lovely

  735. whatever is

  736. admirable

  737. if anything

  738. is excellent

  739. or praiseworthy

  740. think about

  741. such things

  742. our minds

  743. are renewed

  744. as we let

  745. them dwell

  746. in healthy

  747. places

  748. and as our

  749. minds

  750. change

  751. we too

  752. change

  753. from people

  754. crawling

  755. through the

  756. mud of life

  757. into beautiful

  758. new creatures

  759. beginning to

  760. learn to

  761. fly

  762. I experienced

  763. distorted

  764. thinking yesterday

  765. probably in

  766. a fairly

  767. insubstantial way

  768. but it was just

  769. on my mind

  770. in terms of the

  771. message for this

  772. morning

  773. but we had a

  774. wonderful day

  775. here yesterday

  776. with community

  777. group leader

  778. training

  779. we were here

  780. a lot of the

  781. morning

  782. the afternoon

  783. and I went

  784. home

  785. after what felt

  786. like a big day

  787. and it felt like

  788. a really good

  789. day

  790. and a God

  791. blessed day

  792. and I thought

  793. I'll watch a movie

  794. and relax for a

  795. while

  796. you've earned a

  797. break

  798. but the movie

  799. affected my

  800. mood

  801. and my thinking

  802. in a really

  803. unhelpful way

  804. and it wasn't

  805. sex or drugs

  806. or alcohol

  807. or anything

  808. awful

  809. it was just

  810. awful

  811. and by the

  812. time I finished

  813. watching

  814. which was a

  815. mistake

  816. you know

  817. my feelings

  818. were affected

  819. by what

  820. I'd given

  821. my mind

  822. to

  823. in a way

  824. that made

  825. the whole

  826. day feel

  827. terrible

  828. still don't

  829. understand

  830. it

  831. I'll tell you

  832. afterwards

  833. what it was

  834. so you don't

  835. watch it

  836. probably

  837. probably if I

  838. tell you what

  839. it was

  840. you all

  841. sit there

  842. nodding

  843. yeah

  844. did that

  845. to me

  846. too

  847. tell you

  848. later

  849. really dear

  850. brother

  851. challenged me

  852. the other

  853. day from

  854. his own

  855. life

  856. and he

  857. said he's

  858. been

  859. recognizing

  860. similar

  861. things in

  862. himself

  863. he's actually

  864. been recognizing

  865. that when he

  866. thinks in

  867. particular ways

  868. it has an

  869. impact on

  870. relationships

  871. around him

  872. and his

  873. whole disposition

  874. and this is

  875. not just about

  876. positive thinking

  877. stuff

  878. this is about

  879. trying to be

  880. and live in

  881. submission to

  882. Christ

  883. and so he is

  884. consciously working

  885. to recognize that

  886. when he starts to

  887. think negatively

  888. especially in his

  889. marriage and with

  890. issues towards his

  891. wife

  892. he prays in that

  893. moment that God

  894. would take it from

  895. him

  896. he prays that God

  897. would take it from

  898. him

  899. and in Christ

  900. he is striving to

  901. think differently and

  902. it is helping his

  903. relationships

  904. another friend once

  905. said to me think

  906. the best about

  907. someone before you

  908. presume the worst

  909. I think I know it

  910. for myself and you

  911. will too

  912. you know you can

  913. actually go into a

  914. brain spiral can't

  915. you can think

  916. something terrible

  917. like just take your

  918. spouse or your kids

  919. or something and

  920. you go all negative

  921. on it and it goes

  922. down and down and

  923. down and by the time

  924. you're finished you

  925. are in a real mess

  926. and the way that

  927. you got yourself

  928. into that mess was

  929. by the way you

  930. thought

  931. your thoughts took

  932. you there

  933. your mind affected

  934. your whole body's

  935. disposition

  936. those who live in

  937. accordance with the

  938. spirit have their

  939. mind set on what

  940. the spirit desires

  941. be transformed by

  942. the renewing of

  943. your mind and

  944. then you will be

  945. able to test and

  946. approve what God's

  947. will is his good

  948. pleasing and perfect

  949. will

  950. so coming to

  951. Christ is the

  952. beginning but now

  953. that we are his

  954. and I hope that

  955. that's many of us

  956. sitting here in

  957. church this morning

  958. the change continues

  959. as we are prepared

  960. for life in the

  961. age to come

  962. and much of the

  963. change and the

  964. transformation begins

  965. with our minds what

  966. we think

  967. heard a lovely little

  968. story about a little

  969. girl I still don't

  970. know if this is true

  971. or not but church

  972. service one Sunday

  973. the collection plate

  974. went around and it

  975. came to the little

  976. girl and she took

  977. it in her hand she

  978. put it on the floor

  979. and she stood in

  980. it and when the

  981. sides person said

  982. what's she doing

  983. she said well in

  984. Sunday school I

  985. learned that I was

  986. supposed to give

  987. myself to God

  988. got the point of

  989. the passage

  990. applied it maybe a

  991. little too concretely

  992. but got the point

  993. therefore I urge you

  994. brothers and

  995. sisters in view of

  996. God's mercy to

  997. offer your bodies

  998. as living sacrifices

  999. holy and pleasing to

  1000. God this is your

  1001. logical act of

  1002. worship do not

  1003. conform any longer

  1004. to the pattern of

  1005. this world but be

  1006. transformed by the

  1007. renewing of your

  1008. mind and then you

1009. will be able to test

  1010. and approve what

  1011. God's will is his

  1012. good pleasing and

  1013. perfect will

  1014. God's will is his

  1015. God's will is his

  1016. God's will is his

  1017. God's will is his

  1018. God's will is his

  1019. services that where

  1020. John and Leslie

  1021. Hicks live down the

  1022. road and a few

  1023. others and I think

  1024. there's a huge link

  1025. between what we've

  1026. been doing in Romans

  1027. 8 1 and what we've

  1028. been looking at this

  1029. morning in Romans 12

  1030. 1 because in Romans

  1031. 8 1 and then at the

  1032. end the gospel declares

  1033. there is therefore now

  1034. no condemnation for

  1035. those who are in

  1036. Christ Jesus and what

1037. that means is we stand

1038. under the mercy of God

1039. the judge of all the

  1040. earth has taken

  1041. condemnation right away

1042. from us and we have

  1043. this magnificent

  1044. experience of his

1045. mercy and we are told

  1046. that nothing can

  1047. separate us from the

1048. love of Christ which is

  1049. in Christ Jesus our

  1050. Lord we are

  1051. recipients of

  1052. phenomenal mercy

1053. mercy and so you get

1054. the 12 one in view of

1055. this mercy in view of

  1056. God's mercy live for

  1057. Christ your whole life

  1058. everywhere you go

  1059. everything you do

  1060. everything you think

1061. and we applied it the

  1062. other day and we

  1063. thought you know renewed

  1064. minds leads to renewed

  1065. relationships and one of

  1066. the greatest things that

  1067. we've received is this

  1068. experience of mercy from

  1069. God's hand towards

  1070. ourselves and he has

1071. put in our hands the

  1072. ability to extend

  1073. undeserved mercy in all

  1074. sorts of relationships that

1075. we find ourselves in and

  1076. I want to say let's begin

  1077. at home

  1078. in the relationships which

1079. are closest to us but

  1080. move out from there

1081. because we know that in

  1082. our families sometimes we

  1083. carry deep hurt and

1084. wounds whether it be our

  1085. immediate family or

1086. families which are a bit

  1087. further out God has

1088. given us in Christ the

1089. tools to be full of

1090. mercy to one another just

1091. as we have received it for

  1092. ourselves in Christ

1093. let's pray Lord Jesus we

1094. pray that you would help

1095. help us to see our whole

1096. life as yours and we do

1097. struggle with sin in this

  1098. age with weakness and

  1099. failure and sometimes grave

1100. error in our own lives but we

1101. experience it Lord in the hope

1102. of the enormous mercy that you

1103. have shown us in Christ and we

1104. pray that just as you are

1105. transforming us that we would

1106. be transformed in the way that

1107. we relate to those around us

1108. especially to those who are near

1109. us in Christ even within our own

1110. families please transform us Lord

  1111. Jesus individually and corporately

1112. as the people of God that your

1113. name would be glorified in

1114. everything we do and we pray

1115. this in Jesus precious name

  1116. Amen
