  1. As Chris already said, we are launching into three preacher's choice passages, if you like,

  2. over the next couple of weeks.

  3. And I decided today that we would have a look at prayer.

  4. Prayer is something that I personally need to grow significantly in,

  5. but it is something worth wrestling with for all of us, I thought.

  6. So I'm not speaking today as somebody who is on top of it,

  7. but someone who hopefully, like you, desires to get better at it

  8. and to utilise the gift that God's given us.

  9. So how about we pray and ask that God will help all of us as we work into it.

  10. Father God, we thank and praise you for your incredible love for us.

  11. We thank you for your grace that we were reminded of this morning by Josh,

  12. that you use weak and unworthy vessels like us to achieve your purposes.

  13. And Lord, I ask that you would use me in that way this morning.

  14. I pray for all of us that we would have soft, teachable hearts to hear you speak.

  15. Lord, and ultimately we ask that you would be glorified

  16. as our lives are transformed.

  17. Amen.

  18. We have a unique ability to transform something that is given to us as a gift

  19. into something that we think we are entitled to.

  20. I've noticed this in a whole bunch of different spheres of life,

  21. but in particular, in my previous ministry job,

  22. I was working in a church in Castle Hill.

  23. And we took all of our kids away for a camp in summer.

  24. And it was quite a big camp.

  25. We had over 400 people go away for the week.

  26. And part of the week away was leadership training for our just graduated year 12s.

  27. And we called them Servant Squad.

  28. They referred to themselves as Slave Squad.

  29. But we went for the more biblical word of servant.

  30. And basically their job for the week was we wanted them to know that leadership is hard

  31. and we wanted them to know that it involves doing the jobs that no one else wants to do.

  32. So for them, camp started a day early when they had to drive down to the campsite

  33. and turn an empty gymnasium into an auditorium to facilitate meetings for 400 people.

  34. They had to, you know, abseil up onto the rafters to hang speakers

  35. so that we could have a sound system.

  36. They had to put all the chairs out.

  37. But during the week, they did all of our mealtimes.

  38. They would be the ones in the kitchen.

  39. They would be the ones setting up.

  40. They would be the ones cleaning up.

  41. And whenever they had spare time, we would invent jobs for them to do.

  42. One year, they spent seven days putting bark on the garden.

  43. Even though it already had bark, it needed a bit of a freshen up.

  44. So they were shoveling bark into bins,

  45. walking it to the different parts of the gardens throughout the campsite,

  46. and then spreading it out.

  47. All along the way, opening the Bible to be reminded of what leadership looks like.

  48. But one of the interesting side effects of this Servant Squad program that we had,

  49. which was a really great thing,

  50. was that after a couple of years,

  51. we got to the point where kids on camp didn't want to do anything.

  52. It used to be normal that as a kid, you went on camp,

  53. and somewhere in the week, you would have to help clean up after a meal.

  54. You would be on an orderly's roster.

  55. And we thought, what a great way to bless them by taking that away

  56. and having some people serve them.

  57. And it was amazing how a few years down the track,

  58. when we designed a special dinner for Servant Squad to say thank you,

  59. the one night out of seven where they didn't have to do orderly's,

  60. and the complaints we got from kids,

  61. because one time out of 21 meals,

  62. they had to go into the kitchen for 15 minutes

  63. to just wash their plates off, put them into the dishwasher.

  64. It is incredible how we can take something that is a gift

  65. and suddenly think that it's something we deserve,

  66. something we're entitled to.

  67. I think that is the way that we have kind of taken the gift of prayer.

  68. We have this thing that God has given to us,

  69. this access to himself,

  70. and somewhere in our minds, we have shifted from thinking,

  71. what a privilege that I can speak to the creator of the universe.

  72. And we have thought, why isn't he listening?

  73. Why isn't he answering with what I want,

  74. when I want at this particular time?

  75. Why is he whinging about the way that I pray?

  76. We have this sense that he should listen to me.

  77. I've got important things to say.

  78. There's major things happening in my life.

  79. I mean, what, has he got better things to do?

  80. And we take this gift,

  81. and suddenly we pervert it,

  82. and it becomes something that we think is a right.

  83. But thankfully, God challenges us in his word,

  84. and I want to have a look at the passage that Wendy read out for us,

  85. and hopefully a passage that is fairly familiar for many of us,

  86. because in it, Jesus teaches us how we should pray.

  87. Say that again.

  88. He teaches us how we should pray,

  89. not necessarily what we should pray.

  90. The Lord's Prayer is a good prayer to pray out loud,

  91. but it begins in verse 9.

  92. This is the prayer he used to teach his disciples how to pray,

  93. not what to pray.

  94. So, simple things.

  95. We're going to go...

  96. There's two points.

  97. Because I'm time poor,

  98. and I need to follow Josh's fantastic example of word efficiency,

  99. I'm going to keep it very simple.

  100. First thing we need to remember about prayer

  101. is that, one, it is all about God.

  102. Sounds simple, but have a look.

  103. Verse 9.

  104. This, then, is how you should pray.

  105. Our Father in heaven,

  106. hallowed be your name.

  107. There's two incredible tensions wrapped up in that verse there,

  108. which we need to carry together

  109. when we come before God in prayer.

  110. Firstly,

  111. God is our Father.

  112. We have a free access to Him,

  113. an intimate access to Him,

  114. but that doesn't change the fact

  115. that He is hallowed,

  116. that He is holy,

  117. that He is mighty,

  118. that He is majestic,

  119. that He is creator,

  120. that He is judge,

  121. that He is completely other than us,

  122. that His perfection is so complete

  123. that for us in our sinful state to come near Him

  124. would be for us to burn up and be consumed.

  125. The whole Old Testament reminds us

  126. that there is a necessary distance

  127. between a holy God and sinful people.

  128. All of Israel's worship,

  129. all of their gatherings,

  130. were mediated.

  131. They had priests between them and God

  132. because God was so holy

  133. that He would destroy them.

  134. They had sacrifices

  135. to try and appease their mistakes

  136. and His holiness.

  137. Isaiah, in chapter 6 of Isaiah,

  138. feels that he is ruined

  139. when he lays eyes on God

  140. because he can see that God is perfect

  141. and He is not.

  142. And he knows that it would be good and right

  143. for God to destroy him

  144. simply for having seen

  145. the perfection of God.

  146. We need to remember

  147. and we need to be reminded

  148. that when we come to pray,

  149. when we open our mouth

  150. to speak to God,

  151. we are not just speaking

  152. to our Heavenly Father.

  153. We are,

  154. but He is still

  155. the Holy Creator God.

  156. I remember,

  157. it's quite a few years ago now,

  158. but I remember when President Obama

  159. had just become president.

  160. Now, like him or hate him,

  161. he had just become

  162. one of the most powerful men

  163. in the Western world.

  164. He suddenly was the commander-in-chief

  165. of one of the most significant

  166. military forces in the world.

  167. He had the power

  168. to do a whole bunch of harm

  169. and a whole bunch of good.

  170. But I remember a picture,

  171. it was a news story or something,

  172. and it wasn't him speaking to camera,

  173. it was just footage of him.

  174. And he was chatting

  175. to some other politicians,

  176. but his daughters came up to him.

  177. And at that point,

  178. he stopped talking

  179. to those politicians

  180. and he played with his kids

  181. for just a second.

  182. And I remember looking at it thinking,

  183. wow, those girls are so lucky.

  184. They get free access

  185. to the most powerful man

  186. in the Western world.

  187. They can call him dad,

  188. and I'm pretty sure

  189. no one else gets away with that.

  190. They get to just run up to him

  191. and hug him

  192. when he's in the middle of stuff

  193. because they have

  194. a special relationship with him

  195. and they are entitled

  196. to his access

  197. in a way that no one else is

  198. because they are his children.

  199. But that doesn't change

  200. who he is.

  201. It doesn't change

  202. the power that he has.

  203. It doesn't change

  204. the significance

  205. of him being president.

  206. It's just that they

  207. are in a special relationship

  208. with him

  209. that means they get

  210. to interact with him

  211. in a unique manner.

  212. But he is still

  213. the president

  214. with his finger

  215. on the trigger

  216. of nuclear weapons.

  217. And it is helpful

  218. for us to realize

  219. that when we come

  220. to pray to our heavenly father,

  221. which is a special,

  222. privileged relationship

  223. where we can run

  224. and we can call him dad

  225. and we can hug him

  226. and we can know

  227. that he is willing to listen

  228. and eager to listen,

  229. that doesn't change

  230. who God is.

  231. He is still

  232. the God who made us.

  233. He is still the God

  234. who is perfect

  235. in every way.

  236. He is still the God

  237. who will not let

  238. the guilty go unpunished.

  239. He is still the God

  240. of absolute holiness

  241. and inapproachable light.

  242. He is still God.

  243. Secondly,

  244. in being all about God,

  245. verse 10,

  246. your kingdom come,

  247. your will be done

  248. on earth

  249. as it is in heaven.

  250. Don't underestimate

  251. what is said

  252. in those two lines.

  253. That is a scary

  254. prayer to pray.

  255. It's a great prayer

  256. to pray,

  257. but when you say

  258. your kingdom come,

  259. you are saying

  260. Jesus come back

  261. and everything

  262. that goes with that.

  263. You are inviting

  264. Jesus to come back

  265. and subdue his enemies

  266. and inaugurate his kingdom

  267. for those who belong to him.

  268. That is an exciting day,

  269. but that is a terrifying day

  270. for those who do not

  271. know the King of Kings.

  272. That is a scary prayer

  273. to pray,

  274. but it is a great prayer

  275. to pray

  276. because Jesus encourages us to.

  277. But understand

  278. the weight of it.

  279. So often we go

  280. through the motion

  281. of saying the Lord's Prayer

  282. in church

  283. without maybe realizing

  284. the significance

  285. of what we say.

  286. When you pray

  287. for God's will

  288. to be done

  289. on earth

  290. as in heaven,

  291. are you actually prepared

  292. for what that will

  293. might cost you?

  294. When you pray

  295. for God's will

  296. to be done,

  297. are you praying,

  298. God,

  299. do whatever you want

  300. with me,

  301. even if that means

  302. taking everything

  303. away from me

  304. like you did Job

  305. so that you can

  306. be glorified?

  307. Is that a prayer

  308. you want answered?

  309. Because that's what

  310. you're saying

  311. when you say

  312. your will be done.

  313. You're saying,

  314. God,

  315. whatever you want

  316. for your purposes,

  317. your way,

  318. because you're God

  319. and I'm not.

  320. We need to be

  321. very aware

  322. of what we say

  323. when we pray

  324. because prayer

  325. is all about

  326. God's agenda.

  327. It's all about

  328. who He is.

  329. It's all about

  330. what He wants to do

  331. and we're reminded

  332. in those just two lines,

  333. your kingdom come,

  334. your will be done,

  335. that prayer

  336. is powerful.

  337. I mean,

  338. it seems almost trivial

  339. to pray for the little things.

  340. We pray for a parking spot.

  341. We pray for good weather

  342. for our picnic.

  343. We pray for all these things

  344. and look,

  345. they're not bad things.

  346. They're good things

  347. but do you ever think

  348. maybe God is sitting up

  349. on His throne

  350. and thinking,

  351. is that all?

  352. That's easy.

  353. Haven't you got something

  354. significant

  355. that you want me to do?

  356. The world is mine.

  357. I made it.

  358. Everything is accountable to me

  359. and I'm encouraging you

  360. to pray for my kingdom.

  361. I'm encouraging you

  362. to pray for everything.

  363. There is a challenge

  364. in this prayer

  365. to lift our eyes

  366. beyond our immediate.

  367. There's nothing wrong

  368. with praying

  369. for your sick auntie

  370. or uncle

  371. or husband

  372. or wife

  373. or grandson.

  374. Those are good prayers

  375. but God has a bigger vision

  376. for the part

  377. that prayer might play

  378. in our life.

  379. He wants us

  380. to be desperate

  381. for His desire.

  382. He wants us

  383. to see nations

  384. that don't know Him yet

  385. and come before Him

  386. and beg Him

  387. to do the miraculous.

  388. He wants us

  389. to look for the completely

  390. unlovable,

  391. unsavable,

  392. for the Catherine Devonies

  393. of the world

  394. and He wants us

  395. to see His desire

  396. that she might come

  397. to know forgiveness

  398. and salvation

  399. and He wants

  400. that to fill

  401. our prayers.

  402. His kingdom,

  403. His will,

  404. prayer is always

  405. about God.

  406. We're encouraged

  407. in Ephesians 3

  408. that God can do

  409. immeasurably more

  410. than we ask

  411. or imagine

  412. and we have

  413. the smallest requests.

  414. We have a catchphrase

  415. that we use

  416. in our youth ministry team

  417. which is

  418. ask big

  419. and expect bigger.

  420. prayer.

  421. Let's lift our eyes

  422. to what God sees

  423. when He looks

  424. at the world

  425. and what His desire is

  426. and know that He can

  427. do immeasurably more

  428. than even that.

  429. We firmly believe

  430. in our youth ministry

  431. that we have

  432. the teenagers

  433. that God can

  434. and will use

  435. to transform

  436. the earth.

  437. Not to transform

  438. our church,

  439. not to transform

  440. our suburb,

  441. to transform

  442. the earth.

  443. That's what we're

  444. asking God to do

  445. and we know

  446. He can do more.

  447. So we're asking

  448. big and we're expecting

  449. bigger because

  450. prayer is about God

  451. it's not about me.

  452. Prayer is about

  453. what He wants

  454. it's not about

  455. what I want.

  456. Prayer is about

  457. what He can do

  458. not what I think

  459. He can do.

  460. God is unlimited

  461. in His power

  462. and we need to

  463. lift our eyes

  464. and remember

  465. that this gift

  466. of prayer

  467. is a connection

  468. to the supreme

  469. being

  470. and utilize

  471. that incredible gift.

  472. First one was

  473. prayer is all

  474. about God.

  475. Second one,

  476. this then

  477. is how

  478. you should pray.

  479. The Lord's Prayer,

  480. verse 9 again,

  481. this then

  482. is how

  483. you should pray.

  484. Our Father in heaven,

  485. hallowed be Your name,

  486. Your kingdom come,

  487. Your will be done

  488. on earth

  489. as it is in heaven.

  490. Give us today

  491. our daily bread,

  492. forgive us our debts

  493. as we also have

  494. forgiven our debtors

  495. and lead us

  496. not into temptation

  497. but deliver us

  498. from the evil one.

  499. How should you pray?

  500. Regularly.

  501. Give us today

  502. our daily bread.

  503. Just catch that.

  504. Today,

  505. what I need for today.

  506. It might include bread

  507. but that phrase

  508. is kind of

  509. whatever you need

  510. to be alive today

  511. and to do what God

  512. needs you today,

  513. ask today

  514. for what you need today

  515. which means tomorrow

  516. you're going to need

  517. to ask tomorrow

  518. for what you need tomorrow

  519. and the next day

  520. you're going to have

  521. to ask again.

  522. God is saying

  523. prayer is not a one-off

  524. God can you just

  525. cover me from here on in

  526. and I probably won't need

  527. to sit down

  528. and pray anymore.

  529. Now that's a valid prayer

  530. and God can quite

  531. capably answer that

  532. but that's not

  533. how prayer works.

  534. Prayer is an opportunity

  535. for us to come before God

  536. and admit that we need Him.

  537. It's not even that

  538. in praying

  539. we begin to need Him.

  540. We need Him.

  541. He sustains all things.

  542. Prayer is His gift

  543. to remind us

  544. that we need Him.

  545. It's His gift

  546. for us to be able

  547. to talk to Him

  548. and just sit down

  549. and say

  550. God I actually can't

  551. do anything without you.

  552. I need you for sunshine

  553. for the picnic.

  554. I need you for oxygen

  555. so I can breathe

  556. and be alive.

  557. I need you for energy

  558. to do my job.

  559. I need you to sustain me

  560. for anything

  561. and everything

  562. because all things

  563. come from the hand

  564. of our Creator.

  565. So if you need anything

  566. He is the place

  567. that you can get it.

  568. So you should go to Him

  569. regularly

  570. and ask Him.

  571. This prayer

  572. is so all encompassing.

  573. It includes material things.

  574. It includes spiritual things.

  575. There in verse 11 to 13

  576. you've got daily bread

  577. but then you've also got

  578. the forgiveness

  579. of debts and debtors.

  580. You've got

  581. leading away from temptation.

  582. What should you be praying for?

  583. Everything.

  584. Anything.

  585. Pray for that parking spot.

  586. Pray for Catherine Devaney.

  587. Pray for those

  588. struggling with hunger

  589. and oppression

  590. and suffering.

  591. Pray for sickness.

  592. Pray for money.

  593. Pray for health.

  594. Pray for the unsaved.

  595. Pray for an end to poverty.

  596. Confess your sin.

  597. Pray for wisdom.

  598. Pray for strength

  599. when you're struggling.

  600. Pray that you can

  601. resist temptation.

  602. Pray in thankfulness.

  603. Pray to praise God.

  604. Pray for everything

  605. because when we ask

  606. we exalt God.

  607. We say God

  608. you are the one

  609. who gives me everything.

  610. You are the one

  611. that I need

  612. for my life.

  613. I remember when I was younger

  614. as a teenager

  615. being told

  616. asking is great in prayer

  617. but don't ask too much.

  618. You need to make sure

  619. you balance out

  620. the asking with the thanks

  621. as if God needs to be

  622. kind of placated

  623. if we're going to ask

  624. for things.

  625. There's lots of acronyms

  626. for prayer.

  627. Things like acts,

  628. adoration,

  629. confession,

  630. thanksgiving

  631. and supplication

  632. which no one ever understood

  633. so we called it shopping list.

  634. And it had to come last.

  635. You had to make sure

  636. you'd done your adoration,

  637. your confession,

  638. your thanksgiving

  639. before you gave God

  640. your shopping list.

  641. And look,

  642. I understand the sentiment

  643. and it is good for us

  644. to praise God

  645. and do all those sort of things

  646. but asking

  647. is what this prayer

  648. that Jesus teaches

  649. is full of.

  650. Have a look at it.

  651. Your kingdom come.

  652. He's saying

  653. God,

  654. God,

  655. please bring your kingdom.

  656. That's a request.

  657. Your will be done.

  658. Give us our bread.

  659. Forgive us.

  660. Lead us.

  661. Deliver us.

  662. It's asking.

  663. It's requests.

  664. You do praise God.

  665. You do adore God

  666. when you ask him for things

  667. because what you're saying is

  668. God,

  669. you're the one who provides.

  670. You're the good God

  671. who gives.

  672. You're the heavenly Father

  673. who loves me enough

  674. to want to give me good things.

  675. Asking is good

  676. and right

  677. and appropriate

  678. and it shows

  679. that we are depending

  680. on God.

  681. We need Jesus

  682. for everything.

  683. For breath.

  684. For life.

  685. And of course

  686. for doing God's will.

  687. I firmly believe

  688. after reflecting on this prayer

  689. and reflecting on scripture

  690. that

  691. fundamentally

  692. the beginning of sin

  693. is not praying.

  694. Say that again.

  695. Fundamentally

  696. I believe

  697. that the beginning of sin

  698. is not praying

  699. because the second

  700. you choose not to pray

  701. you reject God

  702. as the one

  703. that you need.

  704. You reject him

  705. as the one

  706. who sustains you.

  707. You reject him

  708. as the one

  709. who holds

  710. all of the earth

  711. in his hands.

  712. You reject him

  713. as the one

  714. to whom you are

  715. accountable

  716. for your whole life

  717. and you become

  718. self-dependent

  719. which is sin.

  720. Prayer could not

  721. be more significant.

  722. It is a gift

  723. from God

  724. to us

  725. for our sake.

  726. He is sovereign.

  727. He knows

  728. what we're going to ask.

  729. This passage even says it.

  730. Don't babble

  731. like the pagans.

  732. They think

  733. they'll be heard

  734. because of their many words.

  735. Verse 8.

  736. Do not be like them

  737. for your father

  738. knows what you need

  739. before you ask.

  740. He doesn't give us

  741. prayer so that we can

  742. remind him of things

  743. that are going on.

  744. He dwells in us

  745. and he knows us

  746. intimately

  747. but he gives us

  748. prayer

  749. so that we might

  750. be reminded

  751. that we need him.

  752. So that we might

  753. verbalize

  754. that we need him.

  755. So that we might

  756. express

  757. that we

  758. need

  759. him.

  760. How do you pray?

  761. Pray regularly

  762. because you need

  763. Jesus

  764. always.

  765. Secondly

  766. pray with

  767. integrity.

  768. It's really easy

  769. to say things

  770. without actually

  771. having any meaning

  772. or weight

  773. behind those words.

  774. I remember

  775. as a teenager

  776. occasionally

  777. I would have

  778. a romantic

  779. relationship

  780. that didn't work

  781. out the way

  782. that I anticipated

  783. that it would

  784. at the start.

  785. As a teenager

  786. for me

  787. a long romantic

  788. relationship

  789. was about

  790. three weeks.

  791. That's not

  792. what I set

  793. out to do

  794. but that's

  795. just the way

  796. it panned

  797. out.

  798. And I remember

  799. the conversation

  800. that you would

  801. have as a

  802. relationship

  803. would break

  804. down.

  805. And it's

  806. amazing

  807. the words

  808. that you

  809. would say

  810. in order

  811. to try

  812. and prevent

  813. tears

  814. on the other

  815. side of

  816. the conversation

  817. when in

  818. reality

  819. it's not

  820. exactly

  821. what you

  822. were thinking.

  823. Phrases

  824. like

  825. I'm just

  826. not ready

  827. for a

  828. relationship

  829. right now.

  830. It's not

  831. you

  832. it's me.

  833. Now

  834. when I say

  835. I'm not

  836. ready for

  837. a relationship

  838. what I mean

  839. is

  840. until I

  841. find somebody

  842. who I

  843. actually

  844. like

  845. I'm not

  846. ready for

  847. a relationship

  848. right now.

  849. And when I

  850. say it's

  851. not you

  852. it's me

  853. I mean

  854. it's you

  855. who makes

  856. me annoyed.

  857. So you

  858. can actually

  859. say the

  860. words

  861. but there's

  862. no integrity

  863. behind them.

  864. You don't

  865. mean it.

  866. It's like

  867. the kid

  868. who says

  869. sorry

  870. when they

  871. get caught

  872. waits for

  873. you to

  874. leave

  875. and starts

  876. doing

  877. exactly

  878. the same

  879. thing.

  880. It matters

  881. that we

  882. pray

  883. with

  884. integrity.

  885. That what

  886. we are

  887. saying

  888. with our

  889. words

  890. reflects

  891. the

  892. posture

  893. of

  894. our

  895. heart.

  896. In

  897. verse 12

  898. we are

  899. encouraged

  900. to pray

  901. forgive us

  902. our debts

  903. as we

  904. also have

  905. forgiven

  906. our debtors.

  907. If we are

  908. going to

  909. approach

  910. God

  911. requesting

  912. and embracing

  913. and rejoicing

  914. in his

  915. grace and

  916. forgiveness

  917. to us

  918. we are

  919. challenged

  920. here

  921. that to

  922. ask for

  923. something

  924. that we

  925. are not

  926. willing to

  927. offer

  928. is

  929. inconsistent.

  930. Prayer is

  931. not a

  932. vending

  933. machine

  934. for us

  935. simply

  936. to gain

  937. things.

  938. Prayer is

  939. a means

  940. of us

  941. growing

  942. closer

  943. to

  944. God

  945. and

  946. part

  947. of

  948. that

  949. is

  950. our

  951. heart

  952. being

  953. shaped

  954. to

  955. reflect

  956. him

  957. as

  958. well.

  959. It's

  960. not

  961. that

  962. us

  963. forgiving

  964. others

  965. earns

  966. our

  967. forgiveness

  968. from

  969. God

  970. in

  971. prayer.

  972. It's

  973. not

  974. like

  975. if

  976. you

  977. have

  978. failed

  979. to

  980. forgive

  981. someone

  982. and

  983. you

  984. come

  985. and

  986. pray

  987. and

  988. ask

  989. God

  990. for

  991. forgiveness

  992. he

  993. will

  994. say

  995. no.

  996. But

  997. there

  998. is

  999. this

  1000. sense

  1001. that

  1002. as

  1003. we

  1004. are

  1005. forgiven

  1006. by

  1007. God

  1008. we

  1009. begin

  1010. to

  1011. lose

  1012. the

  1013. ability

  1014. to

  1015. not

  1016. show

  1017. forgiveness.

  1018. Suddenly

  1019. we realise

  1020. we are

  1021. completely

  1022. unworthy

  1023. selfish

  1024. sinful

  1025. despicable

  1026. human

  1027. beings

  1028. who

  1029. God

  1030. loves

  1031. anyway

  1032. and

  1033. it

  1034. gets

  1035. really

  1036. hard

  1037. to

  1038. look

  1039. down

  1040. on

  1041. other

  1042. people.

  1043. We

  1044. need

  1045. to

  1046. pray

  1047. with

  1048. integrity

  1049. as

  1050. we

  1051. come

  1052. to

  1053. God

  1054. and

  1055. request

  1056. his

  1057. goodness

  1058. we

  1059. need

  1060. to

  1061. reflect

  1062. on

  1063. our

  1064. own

  1065. lives

  1066. parts

  1067. of our

  1068. lives

  1069. that

  1070. may

  1071. not

  1072. line

  1073. up

  1074. with

  1075. what

  1076. it

  1077. means

  1078. to

  1079. follow

  1080. Jesus.

  1081. We

  1082. need

  1083. to

  1084. be

  1085. willing

  1086. to

  1087. confess

  1088. honestly

  1089. and

  1090. openly

  1091. where

  1092. we've

  1093. fallen

  1094. short

  1095. and

  1096. we

  1097. need

  1098. to

  1099. cry

  1100. out

  1101. for

  1102. God's

  1103. guidance

  1104. willing

  1105. to

  1106. pay

  1107. the

  1108. cost

  1109. when

  1110. he

  1111. guides

  1112. us

  1113. maybe

  1114. where

  1115. we

  1116. didn't

  1117. want

  1118. to

  1119. go.

  1120. When

  1121. you

  1122. ask

  1123. for

  1124. God's

  1125. will

  1126. to

  1127. be

  1128. done

  1129. do

  1130. you

  1131. say

  1132. those

  1133. words

  1134. with

  1135. integrity

  1136. ready

  1137. to

  1138. follow

  1139. wherever

  1140. he

  1141. might

  1142. when

  1143. you

  1144. ask

  1145. him

  1146. to

  1147. use

  1148. your

  1149. life

  1150. as

  1151. he

  1152. pleases

  1153. do

  1154. you

  1155. mean

  1156. it

  1157. and

  1158. if

  1159. not

  1160. confess

  1161. it

  1162. acknowledge

  1163. that

  1164. you

  1165. are

  1166. failing

  1167. in

  1168. that

  1169. and

  1170. ask

  1171. that

  1172. God

  1173. would

  1174. shape

  1175. your

  1176. heart

  1177. so

  1178. you

  1179. can

  1180. pray

  1181. those

  1182. words

  1183. confidently

  1184. lastly

  1185. on

  1186. integrity

  1187. we need

  1188. to pray

  1189. out of

  1190. our

  1191. hearts

  1192. let me

  1193. read

  1194. verse

  1195. 5

  1196. to

  1197. 8

  1198. again

  1199. when

  1200. you

  1201. pray

  1202. do

  1203. not

  1204. be

  1205. like

  1206. the

  1207. hypocrites

  1208. for

  1209. they

  1210. love

  1211. to

  1212. pray

  1213. standing

  1214. prayer

  1215. is not

  1216. an

  1217. exercise

  1218. in

  1219. showing

  1220. off

  1221. prayer

  1222. is not

  1223. an

  1224. exercise

  1225. in

  1226. practicing

  1227. your

  1228. communication

  1229. skills

  1230. prayer

  1231. is an

  1232. exercise

  1233. in

  1234. trust

  1235. in

  1236. Jesus

  1237. it

  1238. is

  1239. an

  1240. active

  1241. expression

  1242. of

  1243. faith

  1244. God

  1245. already

  1246. knows

  1247. your

  1248. words

  1249. before

  1250. you

  1251. open

  1252. your

  1253. mouth

  1254. so

  1255. don't

  1256. fluff

  1257. about

  1258. tell

  1259. him

  1260. what

  1261. you

  1262. want

  1263. I

  1264. was

  1265. challenged

  1266. recently

  1267. that

  1268. often

  1269. we

  1270. try

  1271. and

  1272. do

  1273. the

  1274. holy

  1275. version

  1276. of

  1277. prayer

  1278. dear

  1279. God

  1280. I

  1281. have

  1282. a

  1283. sick

  1284. grandmother

  1285. so

  1286. if

  1287. it's

  1288. your

  1289. will

  1290. make

  1291. it

  1292. better

  1293. if

  1294. not

  1295. help

  1296. me

  1297. to be

  1298. okay

  1299. with

  1300. that

  1301. now

  1302. that's

  1303. not

  1304. a

  1305. wrong

  1306. prayer

  1307. but

  1308. what

  1309. do

  1310. I

  1311. really

  1312. want

  1313. I

  1314. want

  1315. my

  1316. grandmother

  1317. to be

  1318. better

  1319. I

  1320. want

  1321. that

  1322. sickness

  1323. to be

  1324. fixed

  1325. God

  1326. knows

  1327. that's

  1328. what

  1329. I

  1330. want

  1331. it's

  1332. not

  1333. like

  1334. that

  1335. extra

  1336. half

  1337. sentence

  1338. has

  1339. tricked

  1340. God

  1341. into

  1342. thinking

  1343. I'm

  1344. holier

  1345. than

  1346. I

  1347. really

  1348. am

  1349. be

  1350. honest

  1351. day

  1352. ooh

  1353. be

  1354. honest

  1355. to

  1356. trust

  1357. him

  1358. anyway

  1359. to

  1360. trust

  1361. in

  1362. his

  1363. goodness

  1364. and

  1365. rejoice

  1366. in

  1367. the

  1368. fact

  1369. that

  1370. I

  1371. already

  1372. prayed

  1373. that

  1374. he

  1375. is

  1376. God

  1377. and

  1378. I

  1379. am

  1380. not

  1381. and

  1382. I

  1383. need

  1384. to

  1385. trust

  1386. that

  1387. his

  1388. will

  1389. is

  1390. been

  1391. done

  1392. and

  1393. not

  1394. mine

1395. pray honestly from your heart let the way we pray in public whether it's leading at the front

1396. whether it's in small groups whether it's in our bible studies be an overflow of the way we cry out

1397. to god regularly and honestly in our own day-to-day devotions and finally how do you pray pray intimately

1398. prayer is no longer our phone line to a distant god off in heaven somewhere

1399. we're reminded in ephesians that those of us who were far have been brought near by the blood of

1400. jesus because jesus has died and jesus has risen and he sits on the throne now we are told in the

1401. new testament that we sit in the heavenlies that we are sitting in the throne room of god right now

1402. and we have free access to our heavenly father so you can cry out daddy you can cry out father

1403. you can pray direct jesus our brother

1404. jesus god the son pleads on our behalf and so we pray confident that our loving heavenly father answers

1405. we pray thankful even before he answers because we know from romans 8 that he's always working for our

  1406. good

1407. so we can have an honest regular and intimate relationship with the god of heaven

1408. we need jesus for everything especially for our prayer

1409. prayer is a gift in which god gives us free access to our holy god

  1410. even with him it's not a right it's a gift

1411. it's a gracious invitation from our heavenly father

1412. prayer is an expression of faith prayer is praise prayer is dependence on god prayer is love for god and

1413. it's love for one another prayer is a gift in which god gives us free access to himself and so we

  1414. must pray

  1415. we need to

  1416. let's do that now

1417. father god we want to acknowledge that so often we misuse good things that you give us

1418. so often we waste opportunities

1419. but lord we ask that you would change us that you would shape our hearts to recognize that we need you

1420. to make us people who rejoice in the fact that we need to fall on our knees and cry out to you for even the most

1421. minuscule task in our lives

1422. because everything that we have comes from you

1423. we want to thank and praise you for jesus

1424. who has died on the cross and risen so that we have clear and free access to you in heaven

1425. god i pray that we would be people

1426. who come before you regularly

1427. and with integrity and desperately and intimately

1428. and cry out to you to have your way in our lives

1429. who plead with you that you would bring your kingdom on the earth

1430. that your will would be done

1431. lord give us eyes to see what it is that you are doing

1432. that we might rejoice thankfully

1433. give us confidence to bring our anxieties and our burdens to you

  1434. knowing that you're here

1435. and you promise to answer

1436. father when we open our mouths to speak to you

1437. may we grasp the gravity

1438. of what it is to speak

  1439. with the creator

  1440. may we grasp

1441. the love that you have shown us

  1442. that we call you

  1443. father and friend

1444. father thank you for this gift

1445. thank you for all that you give us and all that you do

1446. please glorify yourself in us

  1447. amen
