  1. Today's topic is the power of invitation and we all love an invitation.

  2. It tells us that there's something great going to happen and invitations come for a variety

  3. of reasons.

  4. Only just two weeks ago I received, this is not normal I have to say, two birthday invitations,

  5. a 50th, a 60th, two wedding invitations, a baptism invitation and an invitation to my

  6. own birthday.

  7. So all within one week.

  8. But today we're going to talk about a particular invitation and this particular invitation is

  9. one that has power attached to it.

  10. But before we do that we need to review what happens when we accept the invitation to come

  11. to Jesus when we first came to know him.

  12. Now we know and we've been doing this through Romans, we know that the gospel of Jesus Christ

  13. has the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes and we accept that the gospel

  14. we commit, sorry, for everyone who believes and when we accept that gospel we are committing

  15. to three things.

  16. I'm not sure that you actually notice that we commit to these things but first and foremost

  17. we all know that we're committing to Jesus Christ.

  18. It is Jesus who has come into the world to live the perfect life, to die the perfect death

  19. death on our behalf and who has risen from death to life to proclaim his power over sin and death.

  20. We know that when we see the gospel.

  21. But the second commitment is to the church, to the universal church and to our local church.

  22. We're committed to the body of Christ when we come to the gospel.

  23. We participate together in worship, in serving each other, in loving each other.

  24. It's why our mission statement here at St Paul's is to know Jesus, to treasure Jesus and to represent

  25. Jesus for God's glory and the joy of all people.

  26. But the third commitment is that when we come to the gospel is to the cause of Jesus.

  27. It's to Jesus and his mission is what we come to.

  28. If we are not committed to what Jesus is committed to, then it's going to question that first and

  29. second commitment.

  30. You cannot truly be committed to Jesus and his saving power for us personally and truly committed

  31. to the church locally and universally if in fact you are not committed to the cause and

  32. the mission of Jesus.

  33. You can, on the other hand, be committed to church and to serving and doing lots of things

  34. within a church and to a mission and not be committed to the cause of Jesus, to his mission.

  35. And if that was the case, then we have a serious problem.

  36. So we need all three commitments.

  37. Now, what is the cause of Jesus?

  38. Well, 1 John 3.8, and I will be jumping from verse to verse all over the place.

  39. So if you're a person who wants to reflect on what has been said, you might want to just

  40. jot those verses down or flick quickly in your Bible.

  41. But in 1 John 3.8, it tells us the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's

  42. work.

  43. And 2 Corinthians 5.18 says,

  44. That is, Jesus' ministry is to destroy the devil's work.

  45. And the Father says that we too have that ministry.

  46. Not only do we have the ministry, but we are given the message as well in verse 19, where

  47. it says,

  48. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

  49. So, every one of us here who is a child of God's, who has Jesus as their saviour, has a job title.

  50. That is, we are all ministers.

  51. And not only do we have a job title, but we have a job description.

  52. And that is the ministry of reconciliation.

  53. So how do we do that?

  54. Well, we follow the example that scripture gives us.

  55. And of course, we follow God's example.

  56. So God says to come.

  57. We read this.

  58. Come all you who are thirsty.

  59. Come to the waters.

  60. And you who have no money, come buy and eat.

  61. Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

  62. Why spend money on what is not bread and your labour on what does not satisfy?

  63. Listen, listen to me and eat what is good and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

  64. The only thing that will satisfy is if you come.

  65. You cannot buy it and you cannot earn it, these verses tell us.

  66. Matthew 11, 28 says,

  67. Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  68. So Jesus says come.

  69. God says come.

  70. Jesus says come.

  71. John 14, 6.

  72. Jesus answered, I am the way, the truth and the life.

  73. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  74. So Jesus is the way.

  75. And if we go to the very end of the Bible in Revelation 22, 17, we read,

  76. The Spirit and the Bride say come.

  77. And let him who hears say come.

  78. Whoever is thirsty, let him come.

  79. And whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

  80. The Spirit and the Bride say come.

  81. Who is the Bride?

  82. It's you and me.

  83. It's the Church.

  84. The Universal Church says come.

  85. It's the heart of the Trinity to call people.

  86. And we have the pleasure and the privilege to be part of the work that the Trinity is doing.

  87. Don't you find that absolutely amazing?

  88. That the Trinity is actually saying,

  89. Come on, church.

  90. You are part of the same work that we're doing here.

  91. We want you to be part of this same ministry.

  92. And did you notice the flow on effect in this verse?

  93. The one who hears is also to say come.

  94. That is for every person who responds to the call to come

  95. is also then to give that same call to others to come.

  96. It's a mandate.

  97. It's something that we have to be part of.

  98. If we have accepted the call to come,

  99. we then must,

  100. not if you wish

  101. or if you feel like it,

  102. but we must be giving that same invitation to others.

  103. Why did Jesus call us to himself?

  104. Well, you most probably know this,

  105. because God the Father knows that we have a serious problem

  106. and he also knows how to fix that problem because we could not.

  107. Many of us have problems that we're not even aware of.

  108. And then some of us have problems that we know about,

  109. but we know that we cannot fix.

  110. A really simple problem often can happen with my computer.

  111. I know very clearly when I have a problem with my computer.

  112. I also know I have no idea how to fix it.

  113. And so I have to take it to the geniuses,

  114. the genius bar down at the Mac shop,

  115. and they fix it for me.

  116. Because I know I'm totally inept when it comes to that.

  117. But you see, we have a much larger problem than my computer.

  118. We know that we cannot fix the problem of our sin

  119. by our own efforts.

  120. Only God has the answer through Jesus.

  121. So there's an invitation to come,

  122. and we have the ministry of giving that invitation

  123. if we are committed to the cause of Jesus.

  124. But I believe that there's actually power

  125. in this particular invitation.

  126. There's power in this one,

  127. not so much in the invitation to my birthday lunch

  128. or to the weddings or anything of that nature,

  129. even though they're really lovely invitations.

  130. But this one, there is power attached to it.

  131. Why would I say that there's power?

  132. Well, if you look at John 6, 44,

  133. it says,

  134. No one can come to me

  135. unless the Father who sent me draws him,

  136. and I will raise him up on the last day.

  137. John 16, 8 says,

  138. Speaking of the Holy Spirit,

  139. Jesus says,

  140. When he comes,

  141. He will convict the world of guilt

  142. in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.

  143. We see again that the Trinity is involved.

  144. The Father, by the Spirit,

  145. draws a person to Jesus.

  146. So we are joining with God

  147. as co-laborers to say,

  148. Come.

  149. And there's a power linked to any invitation

  150. when you are working with God.

  151. It's the power of God.

  152. The one who created the world

  153. adds his power to these invitations.

  154. But there's also a power

  155. that stops that from happening.

  156. There is an enemy to a person's soul.

  157. Satan is prowling around

  158. like a roaring lion

  159. ready to kill and destroy,

  160. Scripture tells us.

  161. In the parable of the banquet

  162. that we had read in Luke 14,

  163. we saw that there's an escalation

  164. of the invitation that went out

  165. to attend that banquet.

  166. There was every excuse given

  167. to stop those who were invited attending.

  168. Some were distracted

  169. by their real estate purchases,

  170. others by their work,

  171. others by their relationships.

  172. And so the invitation went

  173. to other people

  174. who were ready to hear

  175. and accept

  176. that very special invitation

  177. to a banquet.

  178. And you would have noticed

  179. there's an urgency.

  180. near the end,

  181. it's, you know,

  182. a compelling,

  183. go out and compel people

  184. to actually come.

  185. So what are we to do?

  186. We're the children of God

  187. led by the Spirit of God.

  188. And so we are not to have

  189. a scattergun approach

  190. to sending out invitations.

  191. That is,

  192. we're not called

  193. to just go and put

  194. some flyers

  195. maybe down in the mall

  196. and hope that,

  197. for an invitation

  198. and hope that one day

  199. somebody's going to pick it up

  200. and come and be here at church

  201. and see Jesus.

  202. That might happen.

  203. But that's not what

  204. we're being called to do.

  205. No,

  206. we are relational people

  207. and our invitations

  208. are to be about relationships.

  209. Let me give you

  210. three really quick tips.

  211. Pray and ask God

  212. who he would like you

  213. to invite

  214. to either church

  215. or to your community group

  216. social event

  217. or maybe

  218. to your own home

  219. to a barbecue

  220. where you have invited

  221. some other Christian friends

  222. just so that

  223. you can get to know

  224. other people

  225. and your friends

  226. can get to know

  227. your Christian friends.

  228. The Holy Spirit

  229. is about

  230. the Father's work.

  231. Drawing people

  232. to the Father

  233. so why not

  234. partner

  235. with the Father

  236. in the work

  237. that God

  238. is already doing?

  239. Open up

  240. your spiritual eyes

  241. and be aware

  242. of when God

  243. is leading you.

  244. So ask God

  245. who are you working

  246. with at this moment

  247. in time?

  248. Who are you drawing

  249. to yourself

  250. and let me

  251. invite them

  252. to something.

  253. That's the partnership

  254. that I'm talking about.

  255. Pray for the person

  256. or the persons

  257. that God has laid

  258. on your heart.

  259. We're in a spiritual battle

  260. and we need

  261. to take that role

  262. very seriously.

  263. Give an invitation

  264. and when you've given

  265. the invitation

  266. then follow up

  267. on the invitation

  268. a few days

  269. before whatever

  270. the event might be.

  271. Opposition

  272. as we've seen

  273. in the parable

  274. for the banquet

  275. opposition

  276. will come

  277. in the form

  278. of distractions

  279. just like

  280. that banquet.

  281. So be on your guard

  282. be in prayer

  283. and follow up

  284. in love.

  285. Now let me

  286. quickly remind us

  287. that church

  288. is not

  289. an exclusive club.

  290. We are

  291. always

  292. to be on the ready

  293. for change

  294. and for growth.

  295. We are

  296. always

  297. to have

  298. a heart

  299. to reach out

  300. to others

  301. as mentioned

  302. right at the beginning.

  303. To be committed

  304. to the cause

  305. of Jesus'

  306. ministry.

  307. And it is

  308. our heart

  309. that will test

  310. the validity

  311. of your commitment

  312. to the person

  313. of Jesus

  314. by the commitment

  315. to his cause.

  316. Let me say

  317. that again.

  318. It is

  319. your heart

  320. that will

  321. test the validity

  322. of your commitment

  323. to Jesus

  324. by your commitment

  325. to his cause.

  326. So

  327. who do we invite?

  328. Let me

  329. actually tell you

  330. really quickly

  331. there are four

  332. groups of people

  333. that are

  334. in your circle

  335. of influence

  336. without even

  337. working hard

  338. to go and

  339. meet people.

  340. Okay,

  341. the first one

  342. is your family.

  343. John

  344. 1,

  345. 35 to 42.

  346. John the Baptist

  347. is with two

  348. of his disciples

  349. and

  350. he sees

  351. Jesus

  352. and he points

  353. the two disciples

  354. to Jesus.

  355. In verse 40

  356. it reads,

  357. Andrew,

  358. Simon Peter's

  359. brother,

  360. was one of the two

  361. who heard

  362. what John had said

  363. and who had

  364. followed Jesus.

  365. The first thing

  366. Andrew did

  367. was to find

  368. his brother

  369. Simon

  370. and tell him

  371. we have found

  372. the Messiah,

  373. the Christ

  374. and he brought

  375. him to Jesus.

  376. And then

  377. as we know

  378. the story

  379. there's a

  380. transformation

  381. occurs in

  382. Simon,

  383. Jesus gives him

  384. a new name

  385. and that

  386. becomes Peter

  387. and then Peter

  388. has this

  389. amazing ministry

  390. but his brother

  391. was the one

  392. who introduced

  393. him to Jesus.

  394. You see,

  395. it seems

  396. that it's

  397. a fruit

  398. of a disciple

  399. is to have

  400. a passion

  401. and a heart

  402. to bring people

  403. to Jesus.

  404. Don't allow

  405. your heart

  406. to go

  407. cold.

  408. Irrespective

  409. of your age,

  410. irrespective

  411. of how much

  412. ministry

  413. you may have

  414. already have

  415. done,

  416. ask yourself

  417. who have

  418. I

  419. introduced

  420. to Jesus

  421. of late?

  422. Be it

  423. even in a

  424. small way,

  425. ask yourself

  426. who am I

  427. praying for

  428. at this

  429. moment

  430. that I

  431. can say

  432. come and

  433. see?

  434. So the

  435. first group

  436. is your

  437. family,

  438. the second

  439. group are

  440. your friends.

  441. Following on

  442. in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  443. chapter 1,

  444. we see

  445. in 43

  446. to 46,

  447. Jesus invites

  448. Philip to

  449. join him

  450. and Philip

  451. then invites

  452. his friend

  453. Nathaniel.

  454. Nathaniel

  455. then goes

  456. into this

  457. little discussion

  458. and questions,

  459. is there anything

  460. good that can

  461. come out of

  462. Galilee?

  463. Because Jesus

  464. has come out

  465. of Galilee and

  466. so he's sort

  467. of asking

  468. questions.

  469. Surely we can't

  470. trust this guy,

  471. he's coming

  472. out of Galilee.

  473. And what is

  474. Philip's answer?

  475. It's not a

  476. great apologetic

  477. discussion.

  478. What he says

  479. is come

  480. and see.

  481. See,

  482. we actually

  483. don't need

  484. all the

  485. answers that

  486. our friends

  487. might give

  488. us.

  489. Jesus can

  490. stand for

  491. himself.

  492. We just

  493. need to

  494. give the

  495. invitation.

  496. But there

  497. will always

  498. be a cost

  499. involved.

  500. It may be

  501. your time,

  502. it might

  503. be your

  504. money,

  505. it might

  506. be your

  507. energy.

  508. And we

  509. may need

  510. to lay

  511. aside

  512. our own

  513. plans

  514. when we

  515. are about

  516. the father's

  517. business.

  518. So there's

  519. your family,

  520. there's your

  521. friends,

  522. there's your

  523. neighbours.

  524. John 4,

  525. 28-30,

  526. it's the

  527. story of

  528. the woman

  529. at the

  530. well.

  531. And you

  532. all know

  533. this story

  534. well.

  535. This woman

  536. is someone

  537. who is

  538. already

  539. rejected by

  540. her community.

  541. She's

  542. ostracised

  543. and that

  544. is why

  545. she's out

  546. in the

  547. middle of

  548. the day

  549. gathering

  550. water at

  551. the hottest

  552. part of

  553. the day.

  554. But she's

  555. touched by

  556. God when

  557. she meets

  558. Jesus.

  559. And even

  560. though she

  561. is an

  562. outcast in

  563. her community,

  564. she didn't

  565. let that

  566. stop her

  567. from the

  568. possibility

  569. of being

  570. shunned

  571. again when

  572. she goes

  573. back to

  574. the community

  575. with a

  576. message.

  577. She ran

  578. and told

  579. the community

  580. that they

  581. must see

  582. the man

  583. who could

  584. be the

  585. Christ.

  586. She's not

  587. even certain

  588. at this

  589. moment in

  590. time.

  591. She's been

  592. ostracised

  593. by her

  594. community

  595. and yet

  596. she still

  597. has an

  598. important

  599. message

  600. that she

  601. wants her

  602. community

  603. to know

  604. about.

  605. How did

  606. they respond

  607. to the

  608. person

  609. that they

  610. had cast

  611. out?

  612. They

  613. responded

  614. by going

  615. and seeing

  616. Jesus.

  617. Friends,

  618. this story

  619. I think

  620. is remarkable.

  621. It's not

  622. just remarkable

  623. from the

  624. woman's

  625. perspective

  626. but it's

  627. remarkable

  628. from the

  629. community's

  630. perspective

  631. in responding

  632. to her.

  633. This is

  634. the woman

  635. who they

  636. thought

  637. was a

  638. nobody

  639. and yet

  640. she comes

  641. with this

  642. message

  643. come

  644. I think

  645. I've

  646. actually met

  647. the Christ

  648. come and

  649. see for

  650. yourselves.

  651. You see

  652. if we

  653. bring people

  654. to meet

  655. Jesus

  656. it's

  657. Jesus

  658. who does

  659. the rest.

  660. It actually

  661. is very

  662. freeing

  663. in so

  664. many ways.

  665. And the

  666. fourth group

  667. is our

  668. work colleagues.

  669. Luke 5

  670. 27

  671. to 32

  672. the passage

  673. is the

  674. calling of

  675. Levi

  676. the tax

  677. collector.

  678. He later

  679. gets a

  680. name

  681. Matthew.

  682. Remember

  683. Levi

  684. is rich

  685. because

  686. he skimmed

  687. money

  688. from the

  689. taxes

  690. for

  691. himself

  692. and the

  693. Jews

  694. looked down

  695. on all

  696. tax collectors.

  697. Levi

  698. was a

  699. hated

  700. man.

  701. But Jesus

  702. sees something

  703. different in

  704. Levi

  705. and Levi

  706. in turn

  707. sees

  708. Jesus

  709. for who

  710. he is

  711. as well.

  712. Levi

  713. then throws

  714. a banquet

  715. and who

  716. does he

  717. invite to

  718. the banquet?

  719. his fellow

  720. tax collectors.

  721. It's his

  722. work colleagues.

  723. They're all

  724. the people

  725. that are

  726. hated.

  727. It's

  728. great.

  729. The banquet

  730. is to

  731. honour

  732. Jesus

  733. because

  734. Levi

  735. has found

  736. that his

  737. deepest

  738. needs

  739. have been

  740. met

  741. in Jesus.

  742. He uses

  743. this banquet

  744. to testify

  745. to what

  746. Jesus has

  747. done

  748. and it's

  749. a non-threatening

  750. way

  751. to invite

  752. work

  753. colleagues

  754. to your

  755. home

  756. to have

  757. a meal

  758. and introduce

  759. the person

  760. who has

  761. met

  762. his deep

  763. needs.

  764. There is

  765. great work

  766. going on

  767. in this

  768. banquet.

  769. You can

  770. see it

  771. all happening.

  772. God

  773. has changed

  774. Levi's

  775. heart

  776. and his

  777. heart has

  778. gone out

  779. to all

  780. of his

  781. friends

  782. and so

  783. there is

  784. great work

  785. going on

  786. and yet

  787. the Pharisees

  788. are still

  789. complaining.

  790. So we

  791. must be

  792. very

  793. careful

  794. that we

  795. do not

  796. hinder

  797. the great

  798. work of

  799. Jesus

  800. by our

  801. complaints

  802. and our

  803. criticism

  804. when things

  805. are not

  806. happening

  807. as we

  808. might think

  809. that they

  810. should.

  811. So in

  812. a nutshell

  813. being

  814. committed to

  815. the gospel

  816. of Jesus

  817. means that

  818. we are

  819. committed

  820. to

  821. Jesus

  822. the church

  823. and his

  824. cause.

  825. The

  826. Trinity

  827. is involved

  828. in giving

  829. the invitation

  830. to come

  831. and we

  832. are commanded

  833. to do

  834. so as

  835. well.

  836. There is

  837. special power

  838. attached

  839. when we

  840. are co-workers

  841. with God.

  842. We have

  843. a circle

  844. of influence

  845. where we

  846. can give

  847. an invitation

  848. to come

  849. and see.

  850. Pray for

  851. your hearts

  852. to be warm

  853. friends.

  854. Warm

  855. to Jesus

  856. and warm

  857. to his

  858. mission

  859. and in

  860. so doing

  861. we will

  862. see

  863. God's

  864. kingdom

  865. grow.

  866. Let me

  867. pray.

  868. Our

  869. Father we

  870. just thank

  871. you that

  872. you have

  873. invited us

  874. to come

  875. and Father

  876. I ask

  877. right now

  878. that by

  879. your spirit

  880. you will

  881. touch each

  882. person here

  883. who knows

  884. you with

  885. a person

  886. to invite

  887. to just

  888. come and

  889. see.

  890. Father might

  891. you give

  892. us divine

  893. appointments

  894. this week.

  895. Divine

  896. appointments

  897. where we

  898. can see

  899. your hand

  900. at work

  901. and that

  902. we give

  903. a little

  904. bit of

  905. ourselves

  906. so that

  907. our friends

  908. might meet

  909. Jesus.

  910. We thank

  911. you in

  912. Jesus name.

  913. Amen.
