  1. Good morning, friends.

  2. If you'd like to get your bubbles and turn back to Malachi,

  3. we are on our third installment of our commitment series,

  4. and we're sort of roughly halfway through Malachi.

  5. Right from the start in Malachi,

  6. we saw the glorious foundation of the relationship between God and his people.

  7. It was right there, chapter 1, verse 2,

  8. I have loved you.

  9. And we unpacked that incredible statement that God's love is an electing love.

  10. His love for them is unconditional love because he chose them before they'd done anything good or evil.

  11. His love for them is a sovereign love because he wasn't tricked, he wasn't forced,

  12. he wasn't manipulated to loving them.

  13. His love for them was a free love because it's an abundant overflow of the immeasurable grace

  14. that can never be bought, repaid, or earned in any way.

  15. But Israel, as we saw from verse 2 of chapter 1,

  16. they failed to see the greatness of God's love.

  17. They failed to feel the greatness of God's love as well.

  18. We've also seen that they failed to see and feel the greatness of the majesty of God

  19. in chapter 1, verse 6.

  20. The son honors his father and to slave his master.

  21. If I'm a father, where is the honor due to me?

  22. The fatherhood of God here in the first few verses of Malachi means that he loves me,

  23. but it also implies that God is to be honored and revered and venerated.

  24. Malachi wants us to see and feel that our Father in heaven has infinite authority in the universe.

  25. He can wield any and all armies on the earth to accomplish his purposes among the nations.

  26. He has myriads of unstoppable angels who do his bidding fallously and never fail in their errands.

  27. He has appointed every star in the universe in its place,

  28. and he holds it there by the power of his word,

  29. or trillion upon trillion of them,

  30. and he calls them by name, each one of them.

  31. And so it is the sheer majesty of the fatherhood of God that Judah's missing.

  32. And the sheer abundance of his mercy and grace that they're missing.

  33. And so the outworking for this is that their view of themselves is big,

  34. and their view of God is small,

  35. and so therefore they are giving God the leftover of their lives

  36. in careless worship and in the way that they treat other people.

  37. Chapter 2, verse 17, where we're up to today,

  38. reveals just how small their view of God is.

  39. You have wearied the Lord with your words.

  40. How have we wearied him, you asked?

  41. By saying, all who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord,

  42. and he is pleased with them.

  43. Or, where is the God of justice?

  44. They want a God of justice.

  45. No doubt we can identify with that.

  46. When aid money for war-torn countries is redirected towards guns and ammo,

  47. we feel the injustice of that.

  48. Or when a billionaire milks money out of poor people with dodgy schemes,

  49. we feel the injustice of that.

  50. When a criminal escapes conviction through illegal technicalities,

  51. we feel the injustice of that.

  52. And in those moments,

  53. there is a right sense of justice stirred up within us.

  54. But a sense of futility is often stirred up in those moments as well.

  55. Will the perpetrators ever be brought to justice?

  56. Will oppression ever end in this world?

  57. And so, you see the cynical, unbelieving question in verse 17.

  58. Where is the God of justice?

  59. That question is tantamount to doubting the existence of God.

  60. Their view of God was so diminished

  61. that they were wondering if he even existed.

  62. You see, the return from exile in Babylon

  63. quickly turned to disillusionment for the people of God.

  64. They had rebuilt the temple as instructed,

  65. but where was God?

  66. Where was God?

  67. Zechariah and Ezekiel both said

  68. that the Lord would return in a glorious fashion

  69. and Israel, God's people, would be restored.

  70. They would be on top of the world

  71. as they were under David and Solomon.

  72. And yet, the temple's built

  73. and decade after decade after decade followed

  74. and there was no supernatural event

  75. marking the return of the Lord to his temple.

  76. And so, we've done our bit.

  77. God, you haven't done your bit.

  78. It's a question of,

  79. is he, in fact,

  80. faithless to his covenant promises?

  81. You see, the evidence to them on the surface

  82. pointed to God forgetting his covenant promises.

  83. There was famine, there was oppression,

  84. life was really hard.

  85. In fact, it was better back in Babylon

  86. and they were fed up

  87. and they were weary of it all.

  88. It turns out, however,

  89. that God had a greater reason for weariness.

  90. 2.17 again,

  91. You have wearied the Lord with your words.

  92. How have we wearied him, you ask?

  93. By saying,

  94. All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord

  95. and he is pleased with them.

  96. Or where is the God of justice?

  97. You see, God isn't wearied

  98. by the faithful prayers of the oppressed.

  99. He is wearied by faithlessness and sin.

  100. And we saw examples of that last week

  101. in their careless worship

  102. and their unfaithfulness in their relationships

  103. with one another.

  104. And so where's God?

  105. Has he forgotten his covenant promises?

  106. Is he going to turn up

  107. and come to his temple

  108. as Ezekiel and Zechariah said he would?

  109. Verse 1 of chapter 3.

  110. See, or quite literally,

  111. listen up.

  112. I will send my messenger

  113. who will prepare the way before me.

  114. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking

  115. will come to his temple.

  116. The message of the covenant

  117. whom you desire will come,

  118. says the Lord Almighty.

  119. He's coming.

  120. And it says there,

  121. he's coming suddenly.

  122. That has an ominous feel to it.

  123. God says,

  124. The Lord you are seeking

  125. whom you desire will come.

  126. He is committed to his covenant.

  127. He is coming

  128. and he tells his people

  129. exactly how it's going to work.

  130. We are told the Lord

  131. will send his messenger ahead of him

  132. to get things ready.

  133. Malachi here is picking up

  134. the imagery of the ancient kings

  135. who would inform their subjects

  136. that they were coming

  137. for a state visit

  138. and to give them time

  139. in order to get things ready for them.

  140. So they weren't taken by surprise.

  141. And of particular importance

  142. was the need

  143. to prepare the way

  144. for the royal procession

  145. by removing anything

  146. that gets in the way.

  147. All the debris,

  148. all the obstacles,

  149. all the boulders.

  150. And the messenger here

  151. has the same function.

  152. But they are spiritual

  153. rather than physical obstacles

  154. to the coming of this king

  155. to his temple.

  156. The forerunner

  157. is to come in

  158. and to warn the people

  159. that the king is coming.

  160. Prepare your hearts.

  161. Prepare your lives.

  162. And once the forerunner

  163. has done his work,

  164. then the king will follow.

  165. The Lord,

  166. who they are seeking

  167. at the beginning of

  168. chapter 3 verse 1,

  169. is also

  170. the messenger

  171. of the covenant

  172. whom they desire

  173. at the end of

  174. chapter 3 verse 1.

  175. It's the same person.

  176. So in these verses,

  177. there's the messenger

  178. preparing the way

  179. for the Lord

  180. who is also

  181. the messenger

  182. of the covenant.

  183. Two people being referred to here.

  184. As the messenger

  185. of the covenant,

  186. he will continue

  187. the work

  188. of the forerunner messenger.

  189. There will be a synergy

  190. between the two.

  191. The difference is

  192. that because

  193. the messenger

  194. of the covenant,

  195. the second one,

  196. is also the Lord,

  197. that is the Lord of hosts,

  198. the Lord Almighty,

  199. he will speak

  200. with unparalleled

  201. authority.

  202. He will not just

  203. present the message

  204. of the covenant.

  205. He is the message

  206. of the covenant.

  207. He is the mediator

  208. of the covenant.

  209. He's the one

  210. who will bring it in

  211. to fulfillment

  212. amongst the people

  213. of God.

  214. And so the message

  215. here for

  216. these cynical

  217. people of God

  218. is that the Lord

  219. has not forgotten

  220. his covenant.

  221. It would have

  222. seemed like

  223. he had forgotten

  224. it.

  225. Things weren't

  226. so great

  227. in Israel

  228. at that time.

  229. And it would seem

  230. that he had forgotten

  231. it for another

  232. 400 years

  233. after these words

  234. when God

  235. never said

  236. a word

  237. to them.

  238. There was no message

  239. for God,

  240. from God

  241. for 400 years.

  242. and then

  243. after four

  244. centuries

  245. we have

  246. Mark chapter

    Mark 1:4

  247. 1 verse 4

  248. saying

  249. John

  250. came.

  251. He doesn't

  252. fill in all the

  253. gaps for us.

  254. He's assumed

  255. we've got our

  256. Bibles open

  257. at Malachi

  258. and at Mark.

  259. It's not hard

  260. to work out.

  261. In verse 2

  262. of Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  263. chapter 1

  264. he quotes

  265. Malachi

    Malachi 3:1

  266. chapter 3

  267. verse 1.

  268. I will send

  269. my messenger

  270. ahead of you

  271. who will

  272. prepare your

  273. way

  274. and in the

  275. very next

  276. verse it

  277. says

  278. John

  279. came.

  280. And John

  281. is doing

  282. what he's

  283. famous for

  284. doing.

  285. Baptising

  286. people.

  287. Saying

  288. wash

  289. yourselves

  290. before God

  291. as a sign

  292. of your

  293. change of

  294. heart.

  295. It's time

  296. to clean

  297. up and

  298. get ready

  299. for the

  300. one who's

  301. coming after

  302. me is

  303. hot on

  304. my

  305. heels.

  306. And

  307. although

  308. the crowds

  309. gathered to

  310. see the

  311. spectacle of

  312. John

  313. possibly the

  314. first time

  315. in 400

  316. years that

  317. there's a

  318. real prophet

  319. on the

  320. scene.

  321. John

  322. says in

  323. verse 7

  324. don't make

  325. a fuss

  326. about me

  327. I'm the

  328. curtain

  329. raiser.

  330. After me

  331. will come

  332. one more

  333. powerful than

  334. me.

  335. It's so

  336. powerful that

  337. I'm not

  338. even able

  339. to step

  340. down and

  341. tie up

  342. his

  343. shoelaces.

  344. And then

  345. Jesus turns

  346. up coming

  347. out of

  348. Galilee it

  349. says to

  350. be baptized

  351. by John.

  352. And you

  353. see in

  354. chapter 11

  355. sorry verse

  356. 11 of

  357. Mark 1

  358. that God

  359. confirms that

  360. what John

  361. has said

  362. about the

  363. greatness of

  364. Lord Jesus

  365. is true.

  366. You are my

  367. son.

  368. The message

  369. comes from

  370. heaven in

  371. whom I

  372. love with

  373. you I

  374. am well

  375. pleased.

  376. And if we

  377. are left in

  378. any doubt

  379. at all about

  380. the sheer

  381. majesty of

  382. Jesus in

  383. the following

  384. chapters in

  385. Mark's he

  386. heals

  387. paralytics the

  388. lepers he

  389. tells demons

  390. to go and

  391. take a hike

  392. he tells the

  393. storm to

  394. shut up and

  395. be quiet

  396. tells the

  397. waves don't

  398. move.

  399. He feeds

  400. 5,000 with

  401. a cut lunch

  402. and then

  403. another 4,000

  404. with another

  405. cut lunch

  406. after that and

  407. it just

  408. continues and

  409. continues until

  410. three days

  411. after he's

  412. dead he

  413. comes out

  414. of the

  415. tomb.

  416. The sheer

  417. majesty of

  418. Jesus controls

  419. everything in

  420. the world and

  421. beyond the

  422. world.

  423. There is

  424. nothing outside

  425. of his

  426. authority but

  427. the big lead

  428. up in all the

  429. miracles of

  430. Jesus displaying

  431. his majesty

  432. and then in

  433. chapter 11 the

  434. Lord comes to

  435. his temple in

  436. spectacular fashion.

  437. It may have

  438. taken four

  439. centuries but

  440. the Lord is

  441. faithful to

  442. his covenant.

  443. The basis of

  444. this covenant are

  445. there with those

  446. words Jacob I

  447. have loved and

  448. God has never

  449. turned his back on

  450. that covenant

  451. promise.

  452. His commitment to

  453. his covenant of

  454. love saw the

  455. Lord Jesus who is

  456. the messenger and

  457. the mediator and

  458. the fulfiller of

  459. the covenant go to

  460. the cross for the

  461. sin of the world.

  462. God so loved the

  463. world that he

  464. gave his one and

  465. only son so that

  466. whoever believes in

  467. him will not perish

  468. but have eternal

  469. life.

  470. The great

  471. fulfillment of

  472. God's sovereign

  473. electing unconditional

  474. free love is the

  475. willing sacrifice of

  476. the majestic Lord

  477. Jesus on the cross

  478. for the world.

  479. God has never

  480. turned his back on

  481. his covenant of

  482. love.

  483. God's sovereign

  484. of course when he

  485. came though they

  486. weren't looking for

  487. him and so God's

  488. being a little bit

  489. ironic in Malachi 3

  490. 1 in saying that

  491. they are seeking him

  492. or that they desire

  493. him.

  494. He's being ironic

  495. because frankly the

  496. people in Malachi's

  497. time as they were in

  498. Jesus' time thought

  499. that they were okay

  500. with God and everyone

  501. else is going to get

  502. it in the neck.

  503. Things aren't great

  504. in Israel but deep

  505. down we've got the

  506. temple it dominates

  507. the skyline.

  508. Deep down you know

  509. you're looking forward

  510. to it.

  511. God's promised it

  512. that his kingdom is

  513. going to be put back

  514. together and his

  515. enemies are going to

  516. be judged.

  517. That God himself is

  518. going to come and he's

  519. going to put everything

  520. right.

  521. He's promised it.

  522. He's going to come in

  523. judgment and God's

  524. enemies are going to

  525. get in the neck while

  526. we the people of God

  527. are going to get a

  528. pat on the back.

  529. Bring it on.

  530. It's going to be a

  531. real treat to finally

  532. be on top and

  533. everyone else

  534. underneath.

  535. Malachi 3

  536. 2 is a wake up

  537. call to the people

  538. of God who can

  539. endure the day of

  540. his coming who can

  541. stand when he

  542. appears for he

  543. will be like a

  544. refiner's fire or a

  545. launderer's soap.

  546. So thank you Chris

  547. for bringing out that

  548. yellow soap.

  549. It brings back

  550. memories of a teacher

  551. who thought that

  552. yellow soap can

  553. clean on the inside.

  554. And when I see it

  555. still I can taste it.

  556. I can still taste it

  557. 35 years later and

  558. still remember the

  559. bubbles coming out of

  560. my nose.

  561. It is awful stuff.

  562. Don't ever do it.

  563. You scar people for a

  564. long time and it costs

  565. a fortune in

  566. counseling.

  567. Notice that the Lord

  568. Almighty is coming to

  569. his temple.

  570. the judgment of God

  571. isn't starting out

  572. there.

  573. He's coming to his

  574. temple and it says

  575. here he's coming as a

  576. refining fire.

  577. He's coming in

  578. judgment and no one

  579. will be able to stand

  580. their ground.

  581. This is referring to

  582. the people of God.

  583. Not one will be able

  584. to pass the penetrating

  585. test of the Lord.

  586. What a turn up for the

  587. books.

  588. They had this notion

  589. that the Lord was

  590. going to come and

  591. that it would be a

  592. blessing for them

  593. rather than judge

  594. judgment.

  595. They were looking out

  596. to their neighbors

  597. and seeing them all

  598. prosper while they

  599. suffered and they

  600. were asking the same

  601. question of Asaph in

  602. Psalm 73.

  603. What good is it being a

  604. person of faith?

  605. Where is our God when

  606. the nations prosper and

  607. his people suffer?

  608. God is going to be a

  609. God.

  610. And they want him to

  611. come and they want him

  612. to sort it all out, to

  613. turn it on its head and

  614. to crush them and to

  615. lift us up.

  616. Show the world that we

  617. are your chosen people by

  618. making us prosper and

  619. everyone else suffer.

  620. God is going to be a

  621. God.

  622. But that's not what's

  623. happening here.

  624. Instead they had to

  625. learn that their smug

  626. contentment, their

  627. self-righteousness would

  628. not survive under the

  629. scrutiny of the God of

  630. justice.

  631. Judgment would begin with

  632. the people of God.

  633. But notice how Malachi

  634. describes the judgment

  635. of God's people.

  636. Verse 3.

  637. He will sit as a

  638. refiner and purifier of

  639. silver.

  640. He will purify the

  641. Levites and refine them

  642. like gold and silver.

  643. This judgment is a

  644. refiner's fire.

  645. It's not described as a

  646. forest fire which

  647. destroys indiscriminately.

  648. It's not an incinerator's

  649. fire that destroys

  650. totally.

  651. It's refinement.

  652. It's a refinement at the

  653. initiative of God from

  654. his hand.

  655. And the purpose of this

  656. refinement, as we are

  657. told there, is purity.

  658. It melts the gold and the

  659. silver and it separates the

  660. impurities that would in

  661. the end destroy the value

  662. and the purity of the

  663. precious metal.

  664. And the Lord will come to

  665. his people until he has,

  666. that is, come to his

  667. people to purify his

  668. people in judgment until

  669. the end of verse 3.

  670. Men will bring offerings

  671. of righteousness and the

  672. offering of Judah and

  673. Jerusalem will be

  674. acceptable to the Lord.

  675. The judgment of his

  676. people will be for their

  677. refinement.

  678. That is, it is for their

  679. holiness so that they can

  680. actually come into the

  681. presence of God.

  682. It will result in them

  683. loving and honoring and

  684. worshiping God as they

  685. should.

  686. The spirit of faith and

  687. devotion of the Lord that

  688. used to be shown will

  689. indeed be recaptured.

  690. Unfortunately though,

  691. verse 6 reveals that not

  692. everyone will embrace the

  693. refiner's fire.

  694. there are those who refuse

  695. to fear the Lord.

  696. And so for them, the

  697. coming of the Lord in

  698. judgment was not a

  699. threat, not something to

  700. be concerned about.

  701. They continued to

  702. self-righteously pat

  703. themselves on their backs

  704. to their own detriment.

  705. And if I can say this, I

  706. think Malachi at this point

  707. is being a pastor and

  708. saying to his people,

  709. come back, come back,

  710. come back, embrace the

  711. refining fires.

  712. Because all that's left is

  713. the all-consuming fire.

  714. If you don't.

  715. What we know this side of

  716. the coming of the Lord

  717. Jesus is that the

  718. refining process was

  719. ultimately done on the

  720. cross by Christ.

  721. God took action to

  722. make us holy and

  723. presentable to himself

  724. through the Lord Jesus

  725. atoning for the sin of

  726. the world.

  727. You see that in

  728. Ephesians 5, verses

    Ephesians 5:25–27

  729. 25 to 27, which says

  730. this about Jesus' death

  731. on the cross.

  732. He loved the church and

  733. gave himself up for her

  734. to make her holy,

  735. cleansing her by the

  736. washing with water

  737. through the word and

  738. to present her to

  739. himself as a radiant

  740. church without staying

  741. or wrinkle or any

  742. other blemish, but

  743. holy and blameless.

  744. Oh, well, that's good.

  745. I mean, it is good.

  746. But don't be mistaken

  747. with that verse.

  748. It's easy to conclude

  749. it's all done and

  750. dust.

  751. Thanks for loving me,

  752. Jesus.

  753. Now pure, no more

  754. refining.

  755. Interesting, the cross

  756. of Christ 2,000 years

  757. ago, while the

  758. decisive moment was

  759. in fact not the end of

  760. the refinement matter,

  761. that day of judgment

  762. when the Lord will come

  763. happened 2,000 years

  764. ago and it continues

  765. this side of eternity.

  766. We are in the day of the

  767. Lord right now.

  768. The refining day of the

  769. Lord.

  770. 1 Peter 4, you've got it

  771. there on your sheet.

  772. Notice it there, it says

  773. it's time for judgment to

  774. begin with the family of

  775. God.

  776. That's post-cross.

  777. The refining process

  778. continues for the

  779. people of God.

  780. And so I want to take

  781. you to Hebrews 12.

  782. It's a passage which

  783. helps us to embrace the

  784. refining fire in a way

  785. that will cause us to

  786. grow in holiness as

  787. opposed to in smugness

  788. rejected.

  789. Hebrews 12 verses 5 to

    Hebrews 12:5–9

  790. 9 says this,

  791. And you have forgotten

  792. that word of

  793. encouragement that

  794. addresses you as

  795. sons.

  796. My son, do not make

  797. light of the Lord's

  798. discipline and do not

  799. lose heart when he

  800. rebukes you because the

  801. Lord disciplines those

  802. he loves and he

  803. punishes everyone he

  804. accepts as a son.

  805. Endure hardship as

  806. discipline.

  807. God is treating you as

  808. sons.

  809. For what son is not

  810. disciplined by his

  811. father?

  812. The word discipline

  813. here is meant to be

  814. taken in the bigger

  815. sense of training.

  816. That's the bigger

  817. overarching sense here.

  818. It's the idea of

  819. training.

  820. Under that is subsets of

  821. things like punishment.

  822. But it's all within the

  823. context of training of his

  824. people.

  825. And these verses here

  826. encourage us to enter

  827. into the hard times of

  828. life by thinking of them

  829. in terms of a training

  830. experience given to us by

  831. the loving, merciful,

  832. covenant God.

  833. God.

  834. They come from his

  835. hand to us.

  836. He loves you.

  837. He is treating you as

  838. one of his children.

  839. In other words, in your

  840. pain, you are not being

  841. treated like a slave.

  842. You are not being treated

  843. as an enemy.

  844. In your pain, God is not

  845. removed from it all

  846. going, I wish I could do

  847. something.

  848. God is not a surgeon who

  849. looks at a bad thing and

  850. comes in and fixes it up and

  851. makes it good.

  852. He plans the incision.

  853. He plans the whole lot

  854. because you are his love

  855. child.

  856. And the issue is, will

  857. you believe it?

  858. Will you let the word of

  859. God settle the issue for

  860. you so that when the

  861. suffering comes, you don't

  862. turn on God and put him in

  863. the dock and prosecute him

  864. with accusations like,

  865. where is the God of

  866. justice?

  867. He probably will not tell

  868. you why it's your turn.

  869. Or why it is happening

  870. right now.

  871. Or why there is so much

  872. pain.

  873. Or why it is lasting so

  874. long.

  875. But he has told you what

  876. you do need to know.

  877. It is the love of an

  878. all-wise father to his

  879. child.

  880. Who never turns his back

  881. on his covenant.

  882. Will you trust him?

  883. In everything that causes

  884. pain.

  885. From health issues, from

  886. death of a relative, to

  887. problems with the kids, or

  888. your marriage, or I've lost

  889. my job, or I've crashed my

  890. car, or finances don't reach,

  891. or that there's changing

  892. church.

  893. Everything.

  894. Coming from the merciful hand

  895. of God.

  896. And verse 14 helps us to see

  897. that this loving God has a

  898. very good reason.

  899. It says, make every effort to

  900. be holy.

  901. The picture in Malachi 3.3

  902. of the refiner.

  903. You notice it there.

  904. It says the refiner sits

  905. and concentrates all of his

  906. tension.

  907. That's what they used to do.

  908. As the refining process is

  909. happening, the fire is

  910. happening, the refiner would

  911. pull up his chair and he

  912. would sit and watch the metal

  913. being refined.

  914. And particularly with silver.

  915. And he would watch it and

  916. watch it and concentrate all

  917. of his concern.

  918. And do you know when he

  919. knows it's been, the fire's

  920. over, the refining process

  921. is done, and the purity has

  922. been achieved?

  923. Do you know when he knows?

  924. It's when he's sitting there

  925. and he can see his reflection

  926. in the silver.

  927. And that's the picture of

  928. our God here.

  929. That's the beauty of this

  930. picture.

  931. He sits all of his

  932. attention until he sees his

  933. reflection in his people.

  934. And why is the reflection of

  935. God, the holiness of God, so

  936. essential?

  937. Because at the end of verse

  938. 14 of Hebrews 12, without

  939. holiness, no one will see the

  940. Lord.

  941. That's why it's essential.

  942. Because the very foundation of

  943. God's covenant is that he would

  944. spend eternity with his people.

  945. That's the goal.

  946. And these verses assume that the

  947. most important thing in this

  948. life is not to be happy, it's not

  949. to be comfortable, it's not to be

  950. fulfilled.

  951. It is to know God, to become more

  952. dependent upon God, to allow him

  953. to strip every aspect of self-

  954. dependency from us, so that we

  955. throw ourselves at our saviour's

  956. feet and just say, glory, Lord

  957. God Almighty.

  958. My friends, I wish I could come

  959. with a slightly different message,

  960. but there is no painless path to

  961. heaven.

  962. It is no more possible to become

  963. pure painlessly than it is to be

  964. burnt painlessly.

  965. Painlessly.

  966. So my friends, let me just put on my

  967. pastor's heart just for a moment.

  968. If that is you right now, right now,

  969. the temptation is to think that God

  970. has forgotten you, that God doesn't

  971. love you, that he's not committed to

  972. his promises to you, that he doesn't

  973. care about injustice.

  974. Jesus, I just want to say, please do

  975. not despise the Lord's discipline.

  976. Have confidence in God.

  977. The covenant promise is this.

  978. The furnace of affliction that you are

  979. currently going through is for

  980. refinement.

  981. It's not for your destruction.

  982. The refining fires are not evidence

  983. that God has abandoned his covenant.

  984. Do not listen to the good intentioned

  985. person who will say, but you're a good

  986. person, or but you're a believer.

  987. Why is this happening to you?

  988. Do not listen to those good intentioned

  989. people.

  990. I want you to know the promise of

  991. Malachi 3.6, I the Lord do not change,

  992. so you, O descendant of Jacob, are not

  993. destroyed.

  994. That simply means that life in the

  995. refining fire is a life of trust in the

  996. unchanging, purifying love of God.

  997. Secondly, I want you to learn the lesson

  998. of verse 5, and fear God.

  999. Fear that you might dishonor him by not

  1000. trusting him.

1001. Fear the impulse to want to jump out

1002. out of the refiner's fire of mercy into the

1003. incinerator fire of judgment because it

  1004. looks cooler over there.

1005. When you reject the refiner's fire, all

1006. that is left is the all-consuming fire of

  1007. judgment.

1008. And thirdly, take the long view.

1009. Take the long view to the day when there will be no more pain.

1010. Revelation 21 gives us the goal of what we are refined for.

1011. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, now the dwelling of God is with men.

1012. He can now be with them, and he will live with them.

1013. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.

1014. And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

1015. There will be no more death, no more mourning, or crying, or pain.

1016. The old order of things has passed away, and the refiner's fire has been extinguished.

  1017. The purpose has arrived.

  1018. The goal is there.

1019. That's it, my brothers and sisters.

1020. And so if you're in the refining's fire right now, let me point you to that long-term goal.

  1021. Revelation 21, verse 7 says,

    Revelation 21:7

  1022. Amen.
