  1. Keep your Bibles open there at Matthew 18.

  2. I'll pray.

  3. Gracious Father, a couple of days before Christmas,

  4. as you remember the great event of the Lord Jesus coming into this world,

  5. to live that obedient life, to die that substitutionary death,

  6. to be raised in a very powerful way,

  7. Lord, we pray that we would see the implications of your grace to us

  8. and the implications in terms of our grace to one another

  9. as we look at this passage.

  10. So we need your help to do the thing that we cannot do,

  11. to not just see the facts of this story,

  12. but to see the glory of it.

  13. And so, Lord, we pray that we would not just understand your grace,

  14. but that we would rejoice in it,

  15. that we would see the beauty and the glory of it this morning from your word

  16. so come and help us, we pray in Jesus' name.

  17. Amen.

  18. A former American footballer with the Miami Dolphins was interviewed by Newsweek

  19. and he was asked the question,

  20. what motivated him to go to university?

  21. And his reply was,

  22. my father and uncle were human cannonballs in the carnivals.

  23. He said, one day my father came to me and said,

  24. son, go to university or become a human cannonball.

  25. And he said, one day while I was contemplating my future,

  26. he said, my uncle came out of the cannon and hit the ferris wheel

  27. and that's when I decided to go to university.

  28. Motive is a strange thing to work out sometimes

  29. and especially as Christians.

  30. What motivates us to be here this morning?

  31. What motivates us to pursue spiritual disciplines?

  32. What motivates us to give generously?

  33. What motivates us to serve?

  34. What motivates us to do what we were doing

  35. even in the last week down at the mall?

  36. Often, it is true that our motives are mixed in the pursuit of right things,

  37. but it's also possible to have wrong motives in pursuing right things.

  38. This is the last sermon in our short series on the grace of God.

  39. We started off being amazed by grace.

  40. It was right there at the very beginning.

  41. I said that the grace of God is God's love freely shown towards guilty sinners,

  42. contrary to their merit and in fact in defiance of their demerit.

  43. That is, neither all the good things we do nor the bad things we do actually count.

  44. God isn't drawn to us because that somehow we're better than other people

  45. and he isn't repulsed by us because our sin is so bad.

  46. Grace is about God's free, unconditional, sovereign, electing love.

  47. In the end, it's not about us.

  48. It is about God and his character.

  49. Last week, we saw how this grace can scandalise us

  50. because our normal moral position is to think of ourselves more highly than we ought.

  51. That is, we tend to play down our massive vices

  52. and we assume that the small occasional virtues

  53. will somehow cover up the massive vices.

  54. It's like a bank robber before a judge

  55. and he's about to get convicted for armed robbery in a bank

  56. and he said, well, hang on a bit, judge, before you get too carried away here,

  57. just remember in your assessment of me that I didn't rob the bank on that corner

  58. and on that corner and that corner, I only just did this one here

  59. and the judge goes, oh, okay then.

  60. I never considered that.

  61. So you're not such a bad bloke after all.

  62. Innocent.

  63. And now it's time for us to look at grace

  64. as grace being the motivation for us

  65. to live a life of grace

  66. and this is crucial.

  67. It's crucial because it's unfortunate

  68. that we often only get it half right

  69. when we look at the doctrine of grace.

  70. When we become a Christian,

  71. we understand that we are saved by grace

  72. but we get confused about what sort of comes after that.

  73. We often are not clear about what it means to live by grace

  74. and there are two classic historical mistakes

  75. in response to being saved by grace.

  76. One, the first mistake is that I'm saved by grace

  77. but I stay saved through doing good things.

  78. It can be sort of like joining a sports team.

  79. You get into the team because the coach was gracious to you,

  80. he needed some spot field

  81. or because you signed the rego forms

  82. but you need to keep your spot in the team

  83. by earning your place

  84. by working hard and performing well to be part of the team.

  85. Another name for it is legalism

  86. and it is a great danger for us.

  87. Even good relational things like spiritual disciplines,

  88. things like evangelism and prayer and barberating

  89. and church and giving

  90. can easily become performance measures

  91. by which we gauge how things are going

  92. in our relationship with God.

  93. Now don't get me wrong here,

  94. I want to actively promote disciplines

  95. like those things amongst Christians.

  96. They are absolutely necessary for growth as Christians

  97. but they are benefits.

  98. They are not duties.

  99. They are a privilege.

  100. Legalism is very, very dangerous

  101. because the legalist is often deluded

  102. by their own self-righteousness

  103. and pride becomes a massive problem

  104. and remember what I said last week

  105. and Deb's reminded us this morning,

  106. pride is the thick hide

  107. that grace cannot penetrate.

  108. Legalism isn't how grace works.

  109. Salvation is all God's work

  110. from beginning to the end.

  111. from the moment you begin the Christian life

  112. until you enter heaven

  113. and I would even say that

  114. for all of eternity in heaven,

  115. it is all by the grace of God.

  116. All by the grace of God.

  117. Take for instance Romans 8.

  118. If you're really quick with your Bible,

  119. flick to Romans 8,

    Romans 8:28

  120. verse 28 to verse 30.

  121. And we know that in all things

  122. God works for the good of those who love Him,

  123. who have been called according to His purpose.

  124. For those God foreknew,

  125. He also predestined to be conformed

  126. to the likeness of His Son

  127. that He might be the firstborn

  128. among many brothers.

  129. And here it is.

  130. And those He predestined,

  131. He called,

  132. and those He called,

  133. He justified,

  134. and those He justified,

  135. He also glorified.

  136. It is all of God's work

  137. from beginning right through to the end,

  138. from eternity past to eternity future.

  139. It is His work in choosing,

  140. His work in saving,

  141. His work in changing,

  142. it is all His gracious action.

  143. So legalism is dangerous.

  144. The second mistake is that we are saved by grace,

  145. all of God's work,

  146. His doing,

  147. I contribute nothing,

  148. and so I can live however I like.

  149. Augustine of Hippo

  150. summarized the Christian life with the saying,

  151. love God and do as you please.

  152. So there's legalism on one hand,

  153. on the other hand,

  154. there is license.

  155. The German pastor,

  156. Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  157. called it cheap grace.

  158. The Bible says this about license,

  159. a couple of chapters,

  160. if you are in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  161. go back to chapter 6,

  162. verse 15,

  163. what then?

  164. Shall we sin

  165. because we are not under law

  166. but under grace?

  167. By no means.

  168. Don't you know

  169. that when you offer yourselves

  170. to someone to obey him as slaves,

  171. you are slaves to the one whom you obey,

  172. whether you are slaves to sin,

  173. which leads to death,

  174. or to obedience,

  175. which leads to righteousness.

  176. But thanks be to God

  177. that though you used to be slaves to sin,

  178. you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching

  179. to which you were entrusted,

  180. you have been set free from sin,

  181. and have become slaves to righteousness.

  182. Now what Paul's doing here in Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  183. is he's actually quoting someone,

  184. and he's trying to help this poor fellow

  185. to understand the Christian life

  186. and the essence of the Christian life.

  187. And this fellow,

  188. he listens to Paul's teaching

  189. about the gospel of justification

  190. by grace through faith apart from works,

  191. and he says,

  192. well if I have a right standing before God

  193. by trusting in his gracious actions

  194. towards me in the Lord Jesus,

  195. and if all of my past and present

  196. and future sins are all forgiven

  197. and dealt with by Jesus,

  198. well that's great,

  199. I'll have that,

  200. and I might as well go on living a life of sin

  201. because I can have that too.

  202. I can enjoy all the desires of sin as well.

  203. And what's Paul's response to that?

  204. Paul's response is,

  205. that's the way a person talks about Christianity

  206. if it is just simply a group of ideas

  207. and not an experience of the preciousness

  208. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  209. It's a person whose Christianity

  210. is all truth and no treasure,

  211. all choices and no cherishing,

  212. all logic about Christ

  213. and no love for Christ,

  214. all decision and no delight.

  215. That is,

  216. they know Jesus,

  217. but they don't treasure Jesus.

  218. We are being set free from slavery to sin.

  219. Why would you want to go back there?

  220. Is what Paul says.

  221. If I cherish the love of God towards me,

  222. the Lord Jesus,

  223. what is it that will please me?

  224. What pleases me is what pleases Him.

  225. And I live accordingly.

  226. Not because I have to,

  227. not because of obligation or guilt,

  228. not because I'm forced or manipulated

  229. or I owe Him,

  230. but because I've experienced the love

  231. and the grace that God has shown me.

  232. And this then brings us to this story of Matthew 18.

  233. So hopefully most of you have got your Bibles open

  234. at that point.

  235. If you haven't,

  236. flick there really quickly.

  237. Matthew 18.

  238. This is a story which helps us to see

  239. how grace,

  240. the grace of the Lord Jesus,

  241. should motivate us

  242. in a life of grace towards one another.

  243. Jesus has been talking about

  244. how to handle things

  245. when someone sins against you.

  246. And so in verse 15,

  247. Jesus says this,

  248. if your brother sins against you,

  249. go and show him his fault

  250. just between the two of you.

  251. If he listens to you,

  252. you have won your brother over.

  253. But if he will not listen,

  254. take one or two others along

  255. so that every matter

  256. may be established

  257. by the testimony

  258. of two or three witnesses.

  259. If he refuses to listen to them,

  260. tell it to the church.

  261. And if he refuses to listen

  262. even to the church,

  263. treat him as you would

  264. a pagan or a tax collector.

  265. Those few verses there

  266. are so essential

  267. for good relationships

  268. within the church.

  269. don't talk to other people

  270. about how you've been wronged.

  271. Don't hold a grudge

  272. and write a little payback list.

  273. Go to the person directly

  274. and speak about the issue.

  275. Look them in the eye

  276. and seek resolution

  277. and reconciliation.

  278. And then straight after

  279. these verses,

  280. Peter's asked the question.

  281. He's always the first one

  282. to come in with the question

  283. or to make a statement.

  284. And in verse 21,

  285. he says,

  286. Lord,

  287. how many times

  288. should I forgive my brother

  289. when he sins against me?

  290. Up to seven times?

  291. You see,

  292. the attitude of the rabbis

  293. around that time

  294. was that you would

  295. forgive your brother

  296. three times

  297. and no more.

  298. And so Peter here,

  299. probably thinking

  300. that he's come up short

  301. a number of times already.

  302. Whenever he's jumped in

  303. with a question

  304. or made a statement,

  305. he always says

  306. the wrong thing.

  307. And so Peter's thinking,

  308. I'm going to go down

  309. on record here

  310. for all of history

  311. and I'm going to say

  312. the right thing

  313. for a change.

  314. So Jesus,

  315. knowing it's only three times,

  316. should I forgive my brother

  317. seven times?

  318. Jesus comes in,

  319. verse 22,

  320. not seven times,

  321. but 77 times.

  322. And Peter goes,

  323. oh my goodness,

  324. not again.

  325. Now some say here

  326. that Jesus doesn't actually

  327. mean 77 times.

  328. What he means is

  329. seven times,

  330. 70 times,

  331. he means 490 times.

  332. The reality is though,

  333. either alternative

  334. is simply to miss the point

  335. of what Jesus is saying here.

  336. Either it would be 77

  337. or 490,

  338. it is to return

  339. to the pedantic calculation

  340. of forgiveness

  341. that Jesus rejects.

  342. And how do I know

  343. he rejects it?

  344. Because he says it

  345. in the parable.

  346. Next point.

  347. You see,

  348. forgiveness is unlimited.

  349. unlimited.

  350. That's what God's grace

  351. is towards us.

  352. It is unlimited.

  353. And this next story

  354. makes this point clear.

  355. It gives us

  356. a brilliant insight

  357. into the enormity

  358. of the grace of God

  359. towards us.

  360. There is a man

  361. who owes a king

  362. 10,000 talents.

  363. It was a debt,

  364. according to verse 25,

  365. that he was not able

  366. to pay.

  367. And that is

  368. an understatement.

  369. The talent

  370. was the highest

  371. unit of currency

  372. and 10,000

  373. was the highest

  374. Greek numeral.

  375. In other words,

  376. you put them both together

  377. and it meant to convey

  378. the largest sum

  379. imaginable.

  380. And so when

  381. one of my children

  382. says to me,

  383. wow,

  384. how much does that cost?

  385. I say,

  386. squillions of dollars.

  387. Wow.

  388. The debt

  389. is incalculable.

  390. In fact,

  391. the debt

  392. was more

  393. than a thousand

  394. times

  395. the annual

  396. revenue

  397. of Galilee,

  398. Judea,

  399. Samaria

  400. and

  401. Edomia

  402. combined.

  403. It's like

  404. taking all

  405. foreign

  406. debt

  407. of every

  408. country

  409. and lumping

  410. on top of

  411. one single

  412. human being

  413. and say,

  414. pay that

  415. back.

  416. It's

  417. totally

  418. incomprehensible.

  419. And yet,

  420. even though

  421. this man

  422. who has

  423. lumbered

  424. with such

  425. an enormity

  426. of debt,

  427. he's bankrupt

  428. so many

  429. times

  430. over,

  431. he still

  432. has a sense

  433. of pride.

  434. He hasn't

  435. grasped

  436. the enormity

  437. of his debt.

  438. Have a look

  439. at there

  440. in verse

  441. 26.

  442. The servant

  443. fell on his

  444. knees before

  445. him,

  446. that is

  447. before the

  448. king,

  449. and he

  450. says,

  451. be patient

  452. with me,

  453. he begged,

  454. and I

  455. will pay

  456. you back

  457. everything.

  458. He's got

  459. no capability

  460. of paying

  461. it back.

  462. No amount

  463. of time,

  464. no amount

  465. of patience

  466. would do it.

  467. He is

  468. utterly

  469. bankrupt.

  470. He is

  471. powerless

  472. and helpless,

  473. no ability

  474. to trade

  475. out of this

  476. situation

  477. at all.

  478. And it

  479. is again

  480. the picture

  481. of our

  482. situation

  483. before God

  484. as we

  485. saw back

  486. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  487. chapter 2

  488. where it

  489. describes us

  490. there as

  491. being dead

  492. in our

  493. transgressions

  494. and sins.

  495. Dead people

  496. don't cut

  497. deals.

  498. They don't

  499. pay back

  500. loans.

  501. They are

  502. powerless.

  503. They cannot

  504. even walk.

  505. Of course,

  506. the king

  507. understood the

  508. plight of his

  509. servant.

  510. You see,

  511. this story

  512. ultimately is

  513. about God

  514. and the way

  515. he has

  516. graciously

  517. treated us.

  518. We who

  519. were bankrupt

  520. before God

  521. with a debt

  522. of sin

  523. that we

  524. could never

  525. repay

  526. have been

  527. forgiven

  528. through the

  529. Lord Jesus.

  530. Our debt

  531. against God

  532. has been

  533. piling up

  534. minute after

  535. minute,

  536. hour after

  537. hour,

  538. day after

  539. day,

  540. month after

  541. month,

  542. year after

  543. year.

  544. But God

  545. in his

  546. gracious

  547. action

  548. towards

  549. the Lord

  550. Jesus

  551. has wiped

  552. it clean.

  553. He's

  554. forgiven us

  555. a debt

  556. that we

  557. could never

  558. repay.

  559. You see,

  560. the words,

  561. he'd be

  562. patient with

  563. me and

  564. I'll pay

  565. you back

  566. everything,

  567. Jesus.

  568. I'll go

  569. to church

  570. and I'll

  571. pull my

  572. socks up

  573. and I'll

  574. read my

  575. Bible and

  576. I'll pray

  577. and I'll

  578. give you

  579. some money.

  580. It is

  581. so pitifully

  582. untrue.

  583. No amount

  584. of good

  585. Christian activity,

  586. no amount

  587. of pulling up

  588. the socks

  589. and rolling

  590. up your

  591. sleeves and

  592. trying a

  593. little harder

  594. morally,

  595. our debt

  596. against God

  597. is phenomenal.

  598. We are

  599. bankrupt.

  600. We don't

  601. have the

  602. power or the

  603. ability to

  604. trade out of

  605. it and God

  606. comes along in

  607. the Lord Jesus

  608. and says,

  609. I release you

  610. from the debt.

  611. Now,

  612. of course,

  613. the twist in the

  614. story comes

  615. when this

  616. servant who

  617. has been

  618. forgiven an

  619. incalculable

  620. debt

  621. walks out

  622. onto the

  623. deck

  624. and starts

  625. choking

  626. someone

  627. who owes

  628. him

  629. a trifling

  630. amount

  631. in comparison.

  632. He makes

  633. sure that

  634. this other

  635. servant who

  636. owes him

  637. a few

  638. dollars

  639. pays him

  640. back right

  641. down to

  642. the last

  643. cent.

  644. Verse 28,

  645. But when

  646. that servant

  647. went out,

  648. he found

  649. one of his

  650. fellow servants

  651. who owed him

  652. a hundred

  653. denarii.

  654. He grabbed

  655. him and began

  656. to choke him.

  657. Pay back what

  658. you owe me,

  659. he demanded.

  660. And his

  661. fellow servant

  662. fell on his

  663. knees and

  664. begged him,

  665. be patient

  666. with me and

  667. I will pay

  668. you back.

  669. But he

  670. refused.

  671. Instead,

  672. he went off

  673. and had the

  674. man thrown

  675. into prison

  676. until he

  677. could pay

  678. back the

  679. debt.

  680. You see,

  681. the fact

  682. that the

  683. second servant's

  684. debt is

  685. one six

  686. hundred

  687. thousandth of

  688. the first

  689. debt,

  690. emphasizes the

  691. ludicrous

  692. nature of

  693. this servant's

  694. behavior.

  695. Any limitation

  696. of grace and

  697. forgiveness that

  698. he shows to

  699. his fellow

  700. servant is

  701. just

  702. inconceivable.

  703. the second

  704. servant pleaded

  705. for mercy,

  706. be patient

  707. and I will

  708. pay you

  709. back.

  710. And he

  711. could have

  712. paid it

  713. back with

  714. time.

  715. It's a few

  716. bucks.

  717. He could have

  718. paid it

  719. back.

  720. But what does

  721. the first

  722. servant do?

  723. He grabs

  724. him,

  725. hands him

  726. over to

  727. the jailers,

  728. he has him

  729. thrown into

  730. prison until

  731. he can pay

  732. the debt

  733. back.

  734. And what

  735. happens when

  736. he's in

  737. prison?

  738. He can't

  739. earn the

  740. money to

  741. pay the debt

  742. back.

  743. And so the

  744. first servant

  745. will hold

  746. that debt

  747. against him

  748. forever.

  749. We know

  750. right at the

  751. very end of

  752. this parable

  753. and also at

  754. the very

  755. beginning of

  756. this parable

  757. because it's

  758. just flown out

  759. of Peter's

  760. question to

  761. Jesus, how

  762. many times

  763. should I

  764. forgive my

  765. brother,

  766. that ultimately

  767. this parable

  768. is about

  769. forgiveness.

  770. And it's a

  771. shocking picture,

  772. isn't it?

  773. the first

  774. servant throws

  775. the second

  776. servant into

  777. prison and

  778. holds the

  779. debt against

  780. him.

  781. My friends,

  782. resentment,

  783. the unwillingness

  784. to forgive,

  785. is a deadly

  786. disease and it

  787. is very common.

  788. It can have

  789. quite negative

  790. physical

  791. consequences,

  792. but it

  793. certainly has

  794. very negative

  795. spiritual

  796. consequences.

  797. Verse 32,

  798. then the

  799. master called

  800. the servant

  801. in, you

  802. wicked

  803. servant.

  804. He said,

  805. I cancelled

  806. all the

  807. debt that

  808. was yours

  809. because you

  810. begged me

  811. to.

  812. Shouldn't

  813. you have

  814. had mercy

  815. on your

  816. fellow servant

  817. just as I

  818. had on you?

  819. And in

  820. anger, his

  821. master turned

  822. him over to

  823. the jailers to

  824. be tortured

  825. until he

  826. should pay

  827. back all

  828. that he

  829. owed.

  830. This is how

  831. my heavenly

  832. father will

  833. treat each

  834. of you unless

  835. you forgive

  836. your brother

  837. from your

  838. heart.

  839. You see,

  840. the spiritual

  841. consequences

  842. here are

  843. severe.

  844. Our

  845. relationship

  846. with God

  847. is strangled

  848. by resentment.

  849. Resentment

  850. is most

  851. often the

  852. reason behind

  853. spiritual

  854. dryness and

  855. decline.

  856. A good

  857. question to

  858. ask of one

  859. another in

  860. that state

  861. is, who

  862. do you need

  863. to forgive?

  864. Who do you

  865. need to

  866. forgive?

  867. When someone

  868. says, I

  869. cannot forgive

  870. so and so

  871. for what

  872. they've done

  873. to me,

  874. the answer

  875. is, according

  876. to verse

  877. 35, is

  878. you must

  879. forgive or

  880. you will

  881. never be

  882. forgiven by

  883. God.

  884. The grace

  885. of God

  886. is dynamic

  887. and it is

  888. life-changing.

  889. We simply

  890. cannot go

  891. through heaven's

  892. narrow door

  893. if our

  894. lives are

  895. bulging

  896. with

  897. resentment.

  898. Heaven is

  899. for penitent

  900. sinners

  901. only.

  902. God's

  903. grace,

  904. compassion,

  905. love,

  906. mercy,

  907. forgiveness

  908. is meant

  909. to motivate

  910. grace,

  911. compassion,

  912. love,

  913. mercy,

  914. forgiveness

  915. in us.

  916. Whenever we

  917. are confronted

  918. with someone

  919. who has

  920. wronged us,

  921. the place

  922. to dwell

  923. in our

  924. thoughts and

  925. our emotions

  926. is not

  927. the gravity

  928. of their

  929. sin against

  930. me,

  931. but the

  932. gravity of

  933. my sin

  934. against God.

  935. On the

  936. 25th of

  937. July 1993,

  938. three men

  939. rushed into

  940. St. James

  941. Anglican Church

  942. Kenilworth in

  943. South Africa

  944. and armed

  945. with machine

  946. guns and

  947. grenades.

  948. After the

  949. slaughter,

  950. 11 parishioners

  951. lay dead in

  952. the pews,

  953. 60 of

  954. them were

  955. wounded,

  956. some of

  957. them were

  958. permanently

  959. maimed.

  960. One of

  961. those who

  962. was killed

  963. was the

  964. wife of

  965. Dowie

  966. Ackerman.

  967. She was

  968. sitting in

  969. the back

  970. pew,

  971. I think

  972. while Dowie

  973. was in

  974. the foyer

  975. handing,

  976. I know he

  977. might have

  978. been at the

  979. front of

  980. the church

  981. involved in

  982. some sort

  983. of ministry.

  984. She was

  985. one of the

  986. first to

  987. die.

  988. Dowie

  989. attended the

  990. truth and

  991. reconciliation

  992. for the

  993. men who

  994. gunned down

  995. his wife.

  996. during the

  997. course of

  998. the hearing,

  999. the men

  1000. turned to

  1001. Dowie and

  1002. said,

  1003. will you

  1004. forgive us

  1005. for what we

  1006. have done

  1007. to you?

  1008. This is what

  1009. he said.

  1010. I forgave

  1011. them

  1012. unconditionally

  1013. because they

  1014. asked for

  1015. it.

  1016. God has

  1017. forgiven us

  1018. and all

  1019. we have

  1020. to do

  1021. is ask

  1022. for it.

  1023. They've

  1024. asked for

  1025. my

  1026. forgiveness

  1027. so I

  1028. must give

  1029. it to

  1030. them.

  1031. Tough

  1032. call,

  1033. isn't it?

  1034. Forgiveness

  1035. like that.

  1036. But my

  1037. friends,

  1038. that is

  1039. the way

  1040. of Christian

  1041. living.

  1042. That is

  1043. the impact,

  1044. the dynamic

  1045. transforming

  1046. impact of

  1047. the grace

  1048. of God.

  1049. It is

  1050. only possible

  1051. when we

  1052. see the

  1053. enormity of

  1054. our sin

  1055. against God

  1056. and his

  1057. forgiveness

  1058. and his

  1059. grace to

  1060. us in

  1061. the Lord

  1062. Jesus

  1063. Christ.

  1064. The grace

  1065. of God

  1066. towards us

  1067. in the

  1068. Lord

  1069. Jesus

  1070. is the

  1071. motivation

  1072. for us

  1073. to put

  1074. on the

  1075. garments

  1076. of

  1077. grace.

  1078. And I

  1079. use the

  1080. term

  1081. garments

  1082. of

  1083. grace

  1084. from

  1085. chapter

  1086. 3

  1087. verses

  1088. 12 to

  1089. 14.

  1090. Therefore,

  1091. as God's

  1092. chosen people,

  1093. holy and

  1094. dearly loved,

  1095. clothe yourselves

  1096. with compassion,

  1097. kindness,

  1098. humility,

  1099. gentleness,

  1100. and patience.

  1101. Bear with

  1102. each other

  1103. and forgive

  1104. whatever grievances

  1105. you may have

  1106. against one

  1107. another.

  1108. Forgive

  1109. as the

  1110. Lord forgave

  1111. you.

  1112. And over

  1113. all of these

  1114. virtues,

  1115. put on love,

  1116. which binds

  1117. them all

  1118. together in

  1119. perfect unity.

  1120. You see,

  1121. the main

  1122. thrust of

  1123. Paul's

  1124. teaching here

  1125. in this

  1126. passage is

  1127. that we

  1128. are to be

  1129. clothed

  1130. ourselves

  1131. with

  1132. Christ-like

  1133. virtues.

  1134. But he

  1135. grounds his

  1136. exaltation

  1137. on being

  1138. clothed with

  1139. these virtues

  1140. in the

  1141. grace of

  1142. God.

  1143. The fact

  1144. that he

  1145. has chosen

  1146. us to be

  1147. in him,

  1148. that we

  1149. are holy

  1150. in his

  1151. sight,

  1152. that we

  1153. are dearly

  1154. loved by

  1155. him.

  1156. It is

  1157. difficult.

  1158. Perhaps

  1159. impossible

  1160. for us

  1161. to show

  1162. compassion

  1163. or patience

  1164. to someone

  1165. else if we

  1166. are unsure

  1167. if God

  1168. is patient

  1169. with us.

  1170. Or even

  1171. worse,

  1172. if we

  1173. don't sense

  1174. the need

  1175. for God

  1176. to be

  1177. patient

  1178. with us.

  1179. These

  1180. garments of

  1181. gracious

  1182. Christian

  1183. character

  1184. can only

  1185. be put

  1186. on by

  1187. those who

  1188. are continually

  1189. experiencing

  1190. the grace

  1191. of God

  1192. in their

  1193. own lives.

  1194. And it's

  1195. passages like

  1196. this,

  1197. Colossians 3

  1198. and Matthew

  1199. 18,

  1200. that undergird

  1201. our core

  1202. value here

  1203. at St.

  1204. Paul's of

  1205. humble

  1206. authenticity.

  1207. Let me

  1208. remind you

  1209. of bits

  1210. of it.

  1211. As a

  1212. church,

  1213. we are

  1214. committed

  1215. to serving

  1216. others and

  1217. considering

  1218. them more

  1219. important than

  1220. ourselves,

  1221. speaking to

  1222. one another

  1223. honestly and

  1224. in private

  1225. when problems

  1226. arise,

  1227. honoring each

  1228. other by

  1229. not engaging

  1230. in gossip

  1231. or malicious

  1232. or slanderous

  1233. talk,

  1234. being careful

  1235. how we

  1236. interpret one

  1237. another,

  1238. asking clarifying

  1239. questions before

  1240. making judgments

  1241. in disagreements,

  1242. being slow to

  1243. take offense,

  1244. being quick to

  1245. confess error

  1246. and sin,

  1247. to pursue

  1248. reconciliation and

  1249. work towards

  1250. change when we

  1251. have offended,

  1252. being rigorously

  1253. honest,

  1254. being vulnerable

  1255. with our

  1256. imperfections that

  1257. encourages openness

  1258. and honesty

  1259. rather than

  1260. cover up.

  1261. our core

  1262. value of

  1263. humble

  1264. authenticity

  1265. is so

  1266. essential

  1267. for our

  1268. spiritual

  1269. health,

  1270. but not

  1271. just for

  1272. ours,

  1273. but for

  1274. other

  1275. people's.

  1276. Their lives

  1277. are at stake.

  1278. Why would

  1279. they want to

  1280. know or

  1281. experience the

  1282. grace of

  1283. God if

  1284. they don't

  1285. see it as

  1286. life-changing

  1287. and dynamic

  1288. for the

  1289. people of

  1290. God?

  1291. why

  1292. would we

  1293. not put

  1294. humble

  1295. authenticity

  1296. into practice

  1297. amongst us?

  1298. Why would

  1299. we want to

  1300. hold on to

  1301. resentment?

  1302. Why would

  1303. we not

  1304. forgive?

  1305. The only

  1306. reason is

  1307. that we

  1308. have not

  1309. admitted our

  1310. own total

  1311. and permanent

  1312. spiritual

  1313. bankruptcy.

  1314. Only as

  1315. we see

  1316. ourselves as

  1317. basically good

  1318. do we

  1319. expect everyone

  1320. else around

  1321. us to be

  1322. basically good

  1323. and especially

  1324. basically good

  1325. to me.

  1326. Living by

  1327. grace means

  1328. recognising our

  1329. spiritual bankruptcy.

  1330. It means

  1331. seeing the

  1332. vast contrast

  1333. between the

  1334. enormity of

  1335. my debt

  1336. against God

  1337. and another

  1338. person's

  1339. trifling debt

  1340. against me.

  1341. it means

  1342. throwing

  1343. yourself

  1344. on God's

  1345. mercy

  1346. daily.

  1347. It means

  1348. responding to

  1349. the Bible's

  1350. instruction to

  1351. forgive as

  1352. the Lord has

  1353. forgiven me.

  1354. And so

  1355. friends after

  1356. three weeks

  1357. we've come

  1358. back full

  1359. circle.

  1360. We are

  1361. back where

  1362. we began

  1363. with our

  1364. spiritual

  1365. bankruptcy.

  1366. This is

  1367. where we

  1368. must begin

  1369. and it's

  1370. where we

  1371. must end

  1372. if we are

  1373. to experience

  1374. the daily

  1375. joy of

  1376. living by

  1377. God's

  1378. transforming

  1379. grace.

  1380. And so

  1381. I invite you

  1382. again

  1383. to lay

  1384. aside any

  1385. remnant of

  1386. self-goodness

  1387. that you may

  1388. think you

  1389. still have.
