  1. So friends, as has been reminded already a number of times this morning, it's the second

  2. last day of the year.

  3. Tomorrow, TV stations and newspapers will reflect upon the year that has been in the

  4. news and what there is to look forward to in the year ahead.

  5. Traditionally, it's a time to reminisce and it's a time to plan and also a time to get

  6. over Christmas lunches.

  7. For me, 2012 has been a hard year.

  8. How has 2012 been for you?

  9. And so there are things about Christ that I need very much at the end of 2012.

  10. As I reminisce on the year that's been and as I think about the year ahead, I need the

  11. perseverance of Christ in the midst of affliction.

  12. I need the energy and strength of Christ in the face of depleting resources.

  13. I need the wisdom of Christ in the face of complexities of life and ministry.

  14. I need the stability of Christ in the midst of rapid church and personal changes that are

  15. happening around me.

  16. I need the assurance of his sovereign authority in the culture, which is sliding further and

  17. further away from his truth.

  18. And so, two days before the end of the year, I want us to take a year-end look at Jesus.

  19. The last look of Jesus, if you like, together for 2012.

  20. And we're going to do that in Revelation chapter 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  21. I want to, if you like, linger for a while with our gaze simply on Jesus.

  22. As we think about the year that has been and the year that is to come, we need to fix our

  23. gaze on Christ.

  24. Why do that?

  25. Because of all the uncertainty that surrounds me for the year ahead, I am certain of one

  26. thing.

  27. God's specific plan for me and his specific plan for you is that you be transformed more

  28. and more into the image of the Lord Jesus.

  29. That was the message of Christmas after all, that Jesus came to save and to change.

  30. And true gospel change of a person's character comes from steadily gazing at the glory of Christ.

  31. That is what 2 Corinthians 3.18 says.

  32. So that is that God's desire for you in 2013, as it was for 2012, is that you be transformed

  33. more and more and more into the image of the Lord Jesus.

  34. And the way he does that is by getting us to gaze upon the glory of the Lord Jesus again

  35. and again and again.

  36. That is how you get transformed.

  37. So let's look at Jesus together for one last time in 2012.

  38. According to Revelation chapter 1, you need your Bibles open here, Revelation chapter 1.

Revelation 1 chapter mention Revelation 1 chapter mention

  39. Go right to the end, Revelation, and then go back to the beginning of Revelation.

  40. The second half of Revelation chapter 1 verse 9, John was exiled on the island of Patmos

    Revelation 1:9

  41. because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

  42. And so what John's writing first and foremost here to Christians who lived and died almost

  43. 2,000 years ago.

  44. Christians who lived in the Roman Empire and they were about to face the biggest nightmare

  45. that you can imagine.

  46. John hints at it right at the beginning when he talks about what must soon take place.

  47. And again, at the end of verse 3 when he says, because the time is near.

  48. You see, these Christians were about to face the full force of the Roman Empire.

  49. And according to the Roman writer Suetonius, the Roman Emperor Domitian, who was the kingpin

  50. in the Roman Empire when John wrote this, he demanded that all the people in the Roman Empire

  51. referred to him as the Lord God.

  52. That was his request.

  53. And so John is writing to a bunch of Christians who are about to be fed to the lions.

  54. Christians who are about to be exiled, thrown out of their jobs, destitute refugees because

  55. they refuse to call a Roman Empire Lord God.

  56. So this message is first and foremost to them.

  57. Those who are feeling the pressure to stop bearing witness to Jesus, to stop calling him Lord God

  58. and call a bloke who sits on a throne in Rome Lord God.

  59. To stop talking about Jesus as if he is important.

  60. And notice who this message is from that comes to John.

  61. Verse, it is from him who was and who is to come.

  62. Verse 5, it's from Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth,

  63. from him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood.

  64. Verse 6, the one to whom power and glory belong forever.

  65. Verse 8, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty, the ruler, in other words,

  66. from eternity to eternity.

  67. You see, Domitian might be the emperor of the Roman Empire, but he is a library monitor compared to Jesus.

  68. You see, this word ultimately is a word of comfort and security for hard-pressed people of God.

  69. And one of those whom is hard-pressed and feeling insecure is the apostle John himself who writes these words.

  70. You'll notice that if you read verses 1 and 2 and link them to verse 9,

  71. you'll see that he is hard-pressed.

  72. Because what John's been doing is he's been bearing witness to Jesus.

  73. And already it has got him into a heap of trouble.

  74. And he says there's more trouble coming soon.

  75. Friends, it is just around the corner.

  76. Notice John knows exactly what he's going to be like.

  77. Because he's already facing it himself.

  78. John's writing from exile.

  79. You don't see it at first.

  80. Because there's just a casual mention in verse 9 that he's writing from the island of Patmos.

  81. You see, Patmos is a prison island, six kilometers long.

  82. These days, it's got over 3,000 inhabitants.

  83. And it's full of five-star resorts and luxury villas.

  84. But not in John's day.

  85. In John's day, he wasn't there for a holiday.

  86. He was there as an old man sentenced to work in the quarries.

  87. Because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

  88. And so what John says in writing this letter is that he is their partner to these seven churches out there,

  89. to the churches of Asia.

  90. I am your partner in suffering.

  91. Jesus was so real and so precious to John that he would rather be exiled in a barren island,

  92. cutting stones with a hammer,

  93. than to not talk about Jesus.

  94. But now on the island, God gives John another remarkable glance.

  95. One remarkable chance here to gaze again on the glorious Lord Jesus.

  96. He gives him a vision.

  97. But he does this not just for John,

  98. but for these churches in Asia and ultimately for us.

  99. For these churches who are suffering,

  100. for those who are tired and weary and running out of steam

  101. and they are confused and disheartened and disenfranchised.

  102. They are insecure.

  103. So in verse 10, John says that he was in the spirit on the Lord's day.

  104. So much so that suddenly I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.

  105. And the voice says this in verse 11,

  106. Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches.

  107. You see, this means that the vision John is about to get is not just meant for John,

  108. it's meant for these churches, but it's also meant for us.

  109. And the point of writing it down is to transmit to us the same kind of experience

  110. of seeing the glorious of Jesus that John himself had on that island.

  111. Jesus does not intend to come to each of the seven churches

  112. in the same way that he came to John on the island of Patmos.

  113. He appears to John and says,

  114. John, write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches.

  115. John gets the vision, we get the book.

  116. He wants us to come to him through his word.

  117. He wants us to seek him in his words.

  118. He wants us to know him by his word.

  119. He wants us to gaze upon him steadily through his word.

  120. The primary way of gazing on Christ today on his glory is through his word.

  121. And so we must be Bible-saturated people

  122. in order to be transformed into the image of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  123. So let's look at what John saw.

  124. Verse 12.

  125. John turns to see whose voice was like that of a trumpet in verse 10.

  126. And what he saw was seven golden lampstands and Christ in the midst of them.

  127. Notice verse 20 for an interpretation of the lampstands.

  128. It says,

  129. The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand

  130. and of the seven golden lampstands is this.

  131. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches

  132. and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

  133. You see, the vision of Jesus that John gets

  134. is him amongst the churches.

  135. Christ Jesus standing amongst his churches.

  136. He is not merely over his church.

  137. He is not distant from his church.

  138. He is in the middle of his church.

  139. And what John saw, according to verse 13,

  140. was one like a son of man.

  141. Son of man was Jesus' favorite title for himself

  142. during his ministry here.

  143. You might think it refers merely to his humanity

  144. and so it is a title of humility

  145. and it's certainly probably that.

  146. But in this instance, it is more than that.

  147. Mainly because of its use in Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  148. which Betty just read out for us.

  149. In Daniel, the term son of man or one like a son of man

  150. refers to a great ruler over all other rulers.

  151. It says this in verse 13 of Daniel 7.

  152. In my vision at night, I looked and there before me

  153. was one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven.

  154. He approached the ancient of days and was led into his presence.

  155. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power.

  156. All peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him.

  157. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away

  158. and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

  159. That's the son of man who John saw.

  160. And so when John says that he saw a son of man standing in the middle of the lampstand,

  161. he means that he saw someone with everlasting dominion

  162. and authority and glory and kingly power.

  163. Someone with authority over all the nations and over all peoples

  164. who would rule the world forever and ever

  165. because his kingdom will never be destroyed.

  166. Unlike Domitian.

  167. The one who stands among the churches

  168. is the one who received from the ancient of days

  169. dominion and glory and kingdom rule and power and authority in heaven.

  170. and on earth over all time and eternity.

  171. Then we get a specific description of what he saw.

  172. The next thing John saw in verse 13

  173. was that this son of man was dressed in a robe

  174. reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.

  175. The robe here is similar to the robe in the Old Testament

  176. where it almost always refers to the robe of the high priest.

  177. And the gold sash around his chest shows two things.

  178. The fact that it is high.

  179. It is not a belt around his waist.

  180. It is a belt around his chest.

  181. And sometimes we do see that, don't we?

  182. With pants that are up just a little too high.

  183. But in this case, it reflects that his priesthood is so very, very great.

  184. So very, very great.

  185. Jesus, not only the son of man from Daniel 7

  186. who receives everlasting dominion over all nations,

  187. he is also the final high priest

  188. who brings all the work of the priests in the temple to an end.

  189. There is no more need for animal sacrifices.

  190. Verse 5 says that this Christ who has dominion from everlasting to everlasting

  191. is the one who has freed us from our sins by his blood.

  192. He is a merciful, gracious high priest.

  193. The priest is so great that he gave his own blood once and for

  194. to put away all sins by the sacrifice of himself.

  195. And this is the one who stands amongst his churches.

  196. The one who stands amongst us today

  197. as one with authority and everlasting dominion

  198. and one with final decisive forgiveness for our sins.

  199. The merciful, gracious Lord Jesus.

  200. Then John sees in verse 14

  201. that his head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow.

  202. This is remarkable because in the same chapter in Daniel

  203. where John gets this picture of the one like the son of man,

  204. in verse 9, God the Father is described like this.

  205. As I looked, thrones were set in place

  206. and the Ancient of Days took his seat,

  207. his clothing were as white as snow

  208. and the hair of his head was white like wool.

  209. In other words, John is describing the son of man

  210. in terms used by God himself.

  211. You put this picture together with the next thing that John saw

  212. in the end of verse 14.

  213. Oh, sorry.

  214. Yeah, the end of verse 14.

  215. It says there that his eyes were like blazing fire.

  216. The eyes of this son of man are not the clouded eye of fading glory.

  217. These eyes are sharp with clarity.

  218. They are purified eyes.

  219. They miss nothing that happens in his universe

  220. and they are exploding with energy.

  221. We all know what it is to have the drooping eye of sleep.

  222. And some of you are yawning right now.

  223. That is about to go.

  224. You know what it's like.

  225. The eyes are closing.

  226. We also know the eye of resentment

  227. and the grumpiness and the half-shut scowl

  228. and the bad mood.

  229. We know the eye, however, that is alive with wonder

  230. and with excitement and with hope and expectancy and energy

  231. like a child on Christmas Day

  232. with a huge present right in front of them.

  233. And Jesus' eyes were like a flaming fire.

  234. What we see then is hair as white as snow

  235. and eyes like fire.

  236. When you gaze upon the Jesus at the end of 2012,

  237. remember that he is not tired.

  238. He is not burnt out.

  239. He is not fatigued.

  240. Instead, his eyes are aflame with a flashing fire

  241. of inexhaustible energy and hope for his church.

  242. He sees everything that has been

  243. and everything that will be.

  244. Nothing will take him by surprise.

  245. And when Jesus thinks about his plans for you in 2013,

  246. when he thinks of his plans for St. Paul's

  247. and for his country and for his universe,

  248. he's not hesitant.

  249. He's not wearied.

  250. He's not bored.

  251. His eyes are aflame with fire

  252. with utter exhilaration and passion

  253. and relish for the work that he intends to do

  254. as another year's pieces are put in place

  255. for the consummation of history

  256. where everything will bow down at his feet

  257. and say, you are king.

  258. But there's more.

  259. There's the bronze feet of verse 15.

  260. A similar picture of glowing metal

  261. is found in Ezekiel and Daniel

  262. in both the brightness of shining metal

  263. or like a fire is connected with the glory of God.

  264. They are the feet of a glorious

  265. and almighty conqueror over everything.

  266. Again in verse 15,

  267. is the voice like the sound of many waters.

  268. Again it describes the majesty of God

  269. as you might see in Ezekiel.

  270. It is a picture of raw power.

  271. The thunder of his voice is authority.

  272. And then there is the right hand with the seven stars

  273. and the sharp sword coming out of his mouth

  274. and his face shining like the sun in full strength.

  275. What do you do when you're confronted

  276. with such power and authority

  277. and splendor and glory?

  278. Verse 17,

  279. When I saw him,

  280. I fell at his feet as though dead.

  281. As at the end of times when Jesus comes back

  282. and people will say,

  283. let the mountains fall on me

  284. rather than be confronted with this Jesus.

  285. Share awe.

  286. He is not to be trifled with.

  287. He is not to be treated with disdain.

  288. Who can stand in the presence of such a Christ?

  289. And to John's immense relief,

  290. this judge, king, majestic, eternal ruler,

  291. reassuringly in verse 17,

  292. placed his right hand on John

  293. and spoke words of comfort.

  294. Do not be afraid.

  295. I am the first and the last.

  296. I am the living one.

  297. I was dead and behold,

  298. I am alive forever and ever.

  299. These are astounding words of comfort

  300. for a prisoner of the Lord Jesus.

  301. Jesus' deity are implied

  302. in the threefold I am statements

  303. and in the title living one

  304. and by his sovereignty over history

  305. as the first and the last.

  306. So this morning I want you to gaze

  307. on this.

  308. The great I am,

  309. the living one,

  310. the first and the last,

  311. is amongst his church St. Paul's

  312. as the son of man,

  313. the one with power over Chatswood

  314. and with everlasting dominion and glory.

  315. He is the great high priest

  316. that has put away the sins of his people

  317. once and for all.

  318. He is the great and wise ancient of days,

  319. yet with eyes that are aflame

  320. with the fire of youth and energy

  321. and hope and exhilaration

  322. for his unstoppable plans for you

  323. and for his church St. Paul's

  324. and for his world.

  325. Gaze upon Jesus in the last days of 2012

  326. and let his royal power

  327. and his priestly forgiveness

  328. and his fiery hope

  329. fill you with confidence afresh

  330. that serving him in 2012

  331. was not a vanity.

  332. And it is not a vanity

  333. to throw your lot in with him

  334. in 2013.

  335. How encouraging

  336. it must have been for John

  337. in his weakness and need

  338. on the island of Patmos

  339. feeling

  340. what was just around the corner

  341. for his brothers and sisters

  342. in the seven churches.

  343. What an encouragement

  344. that the revelation of Jesus

  345. was as the powerful son of man

  346. in the midst of his church

  347. in their weakness and need.

  348. So let me close this year

  349. and this last word,

  350. this last look at Jesus

  351. with three points of application.

  352. One for me,

  353. one for a small group of you,

  354. and one for all of us.

  355. As I said earlier,

  356. as I began,

  357. this has been a tough year.

  358. As I recently read,

  359. there are a few things

  360. that will reveal to you

  361. the full range of your sin,

  362. immaturity,

  363. weakness,

  364. and failure

  365. like gospel ministry.

  366. There are a few things

  367. that will expose

  368. your weakness to others

  369. as consistently

  370. as ministry does.

  371. There are a few endeavors

  372. that will put you

  373. under more public expectancy

  374. and scrutiny

  375. like ministry does.

  376. There are a few things

  377. that are as personally humbling

  378. as ministry is.

  379. There are a few endeavors

  380. that have the power

  381. to produce in you

  382. such deep feelings

  383. of inadequacy

  384. as ministry does.

  385. And I read those words

  386. and I wept.

  387. I have become

  388. more acutely aware

  389. of it this year.

  390. Our church has gone

  391. through a number

  392. of painful transitions

  393. and I feel

  394. every one of them.

  395. This time,

  396. we had 30 people more

  397. gathering with us

  398. each Sunday

  399. this time last year.

  400. There have been

  401. a number of difficult

  402. and ongoing

  403. and very painful

  404. pastoral situations

  405. where I don't have

  406. the answer for it.

  407. I don't know

  408. what to do.

  409. We are $120,000

  410. behind on our offertory.

  411. The school was rejected

  412. at Roseville East

  413. by a handful of people.

  414. The gospel appears

  415. to be making slow progress

  416. in our culture.

  417. The staff are tired.

  418. I see fragility

  419. everywhere I look.

  420. And at points,

  421. my resources

  422. have been very low

  423. and I feel weak.

  424. I am weak.

  425. So what a wonderful picture

  426. this is for me

  427. in my weakness

  428. and need.

  429. The King of Kings,

  430. the Lord of Lords,

  431. stands in the midst

  432. of his church

  433. and he has done

  434. remarkable things

  435. in 2012

  436. in spite of my weakness.

  437. It is his church.

  438. He is Lord over it.

  439. He is not distant from it.

  440. The only answer for me

  441. is to fix my gaze on him,

  442. to turn,

  443. to look

  444. and to see

  445. the Lord Jesus

  446. again and again.

  447. It is essential

  448. for longevity

  449. and effectiveness

  450. of ministry

  451. that I spend

  452. more and more time

  453. communing

  454. with the Lord

  455. of St. Paul's Chatswood.

  456. Secondly,

  457. some of you

  458. are feeling insecure

  459. and fragile

  460. because of the

  461. cultural changes

  462. that we have made

  463. over the past number

  464. of years here

  465. at St. Paul's.

  466. And for those of you

  467. who are feeling fragile,

  468. I am acutely aware

  469. that some of you

  470. are about to feel

  471. even more fragile

  472. because a dearly loved brother

  473. is near death.

  474. For many decades,

  475. John Donne has been

  476. a source of wisdom

  477. and guidance.

  478. He has been a rock

  479. in hard times.

  480. He has thought for you.

  481. He has prayed for you.

  482. He has encouraged you.

  483. He has rebuked you.

  484. He has taught you.

  485. For some,

  486. he has grown

  487. to become the primary leader

  488. in the church,

  489. a source of security

  490. and stability.

  491. And although he hasn't

  492. been here all year,

  493. he has been

  494. only a few streets away

  495. and at the end

  496. of the phone

  497. and potentially

  498. within hours,

  499. certainly within days,

  500. he won't be here at all.

  501. And you'll look around

  502. for the first time

  503. in decades

  504. and John won't be

  505. sitting in a pew.

  506. And that will

  507. unsettle you.

  508. That will be tough.

  509. You will feel insecure.

  510. And for some,

  511. St Paul's will feel

  512. even more so

  513. different

  514. than what it has been

  515. without John.

  516. And in those moments,

  517. I call to you

  518. as your pastor

  519. to turn around

  520. and see Jesus.

  521. To fix your gaze

  522. on Jesus

  523. in your insecurity,

  524. the Jesus

  525. that John has been

  526. pointing you to

  527. for decades.

  528. The triumphant,

  529. eternal Lord Jesus

  530. stands in the midst

  531. of his church,

  532. St Paul's,

  533. and he puts his hand

  534. on your shoulder

  535. in your weakness

  536. and your fragility

  537. and he says,

  538. I'm still king.

  539. I am the living one.

  540. Last of all,

  541. for all of us,

  542. what are your

  543. new year resolutions?

  544. And do they have

  545. anything to do

  546. with serving

  547. the almighty

  548. King of kings,

  549. Lord of lords,

  550. who is

  551. and was

  552. and always

  553. will be?

  554. And do they have

  555. anything to do

  556. with being transformed

  557. more and more

  558. into his likeness

  559. in 2013?

  560. What is it

  561. that you want

  562. Jesus to change

  563. in you

  564. in 2013?

  565. What area

  566. do you need

  567. to let go of

  568. that he might be

  569. not just king

  570. of St Paul's

  571. but king

  572. of your heart?

  573. Let's pray.

  574. Our gracious

  575. Saviour

  576. and eternal

  577. Lord,

  578. help us,

  579. your church.

  580. We are slow

  581. to learn,

  582. so prone

  583. to forget,

  584. so weak

  585. to climb.

  586. We are in the

  587. foothills

  588. when we ought

  589. to be in the heights.

  590. So make it

  591. our chiefest joy

  592. to know you,

  593. to treasure you

  594. and to represent you.

  595. May we meditate

  596. on you,

  597. gaze on you,

  598. sit like Mary

  599. at your feet,

  600. lean like John

  601. on your chest,

  602. appeal like Peter

  603. to your love,

  604. count like Paul

  605. all things rubbish

  606. that we might

  607. know you

  608. more and more.

  609. So give us

  610. increase

  611. and progress

  612. in grace

  613. in 2013

  614. that there may

  615. be more decision

  616. in our character,

  617. more vigour

  618. in our purposes,

  619. more fervour

  620. in our devotion,

  621. more constancy

  622. in our zeal,

  623. rule in our hearts

  624. and over your

  625. church St Paul's,

  626. Lord Jesus,

  627. King of kings

  628. and Lord of lords,

  629. the beginning

  630. and the end,

  631. the living one

  632. who was

  633. and is

  634. and yet is

  635. to come.

  636. Come Lord Jesus.

  637. Amen.
