  1. If you could keep the Jonah passage open in front of you, that would be fantastic.

  2. Let me add my Happy New Year to those who I haven't had the chance to see in the last

  3. five or six days or whatever it's been.

  4. Hopefully you have started well and hopefully this year will be a year in which you grow

  5. in your love of God and your knowledge of Him.

  6. And we're going to try and do that together tonight by beginning a series in Jonah.

  7. And I did challenge you last week, I understand if you forgot, but I did challenge you that

  8. we're actually going to look at Jonah, kind of all of it, every week.

  9. So even though we read Jonah 1 just then and we're going to read Jonah 3 next week and Jonah

  10. 4 the week after, we're going to look at all of it.

  11. So it would be a good idea to at some point in the next three weeks sit down and have a

  12. crack at reading all of Jonah.

  13. It's not a big ask and it will bless you as we work our way through the passage.

  14. I'm going to pray and then we will start having a look at what it is God wants to teach us

  15. from this.

  16. Father God, we thank you for the chance to gather this evening.

  17. We thank you for your word and the power that it has to shape us and to change us.

  18. And we ask that tonight as we sit and as we reflect on the story of Jonah, that you would

  19. give us a bigger vision of you, that the result of tonight would not be that we know more things,

  20. but that we are different people.

  21. We ask that your spirit would make us more and more like Jesus so that you get the glory.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. When you truly believe something, it has to actually affect the way that you live or your

  25. actions.

  26. It's not enough to just say, I believe something.

  27. You can always tell when the rubber hits the road whether or not this is something you have

  28. a genuine conviction about.

  29. I remember it's nearly 10 years ago now, for my 21st birthday, I was given a round the world

  30. ticket.

  31. And I was sitting on the plane struggling to sleep.

  32. And one of the movies that I decided to watch in that plane was a movie called Super Size

  33. Me.

  34. I don't know if you remember this movie, but the basic premise is a guy called Morgan Spurlock,

  35. cracker of a name, decided that it would be a good idea for a month to eat only McDonald's,

  36. breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  37. And the rules were, whenever a McDonald's employee suggested that he upsize his meal or would he

  38. like fries or he had to say yes.

  39. And he had to eat all of whatever came to him over the course of the month.

  40. And so, you know, obviously there were people around him, his girlfriend, his friends that

  41. were concerned about what might happen over the course of this experiment.

  42. And the experiment went roughly like you would expect.

  43. There's lots of him vomiting in it.

  44. By the end of the month, he's fatter.

  45. He's got a worse heart.

  46. Everything's going bad for him.

  47. And you can watch a movie like that.

  48. And even I can watch a movie like that and say, McDonald's is bad for you.

  49. McDonald's is going to do you damage.

  50. But for some reason, the first thing I did when I got off that plane was go get a Big Mac.

  51. I'd spent 45 minutes watching him eat and throw up and eat and throw up.

  52. But all it did was make me want to eat McDonald's.

  53. And so I could articulate that I believe McDonald's was bad.

  54. But what I was doing actually betrayed that I believed something different.

  55. I believed that this guy was an idiot and it wouldn't happen to me.

  56. When you truly believe something, it changes your actions.

  57. It changes what you do as well.

  58. And so what about some of the things that we believe as Christians, as followers of God?

  59. We believe that God is sovereign.

  60. We believe that God is in control.

  61. The Bible says it.

  62. We claim it.

  63. We encourage one another with it.

  64. But do we live like God is in control?

  65. Would people look at our lifestyle and the decisions we make and the priorities we have

  66. and would they conclude from us that we believe God is in control?

  67. When you hear about things like the earthquake in Haiti or the various tsunamis that have happened,

  68. the global financial crisis, children dying of starvation,

  69. can you still, when you hear that, say with confidence, God is in control?

  70. Or do you feel a little bit embarrassed when your neighbours ask you, where's your God in that?

  71. When your school friends or maybe even your family ask you, where's your God with all this stuff going on,

  72. can you still confidently say he's in control?

  73. Or do you start to feel a bit apologetic?

  74. What about in your own life?

  75. When difficult times come, do you feel like God is losing his grip?

  76. As you wrestle with the stress of paying bills,

  77. as you deal with the death of someone close to you,

  78. as you wrestle with the loneliness of being the only single person

  79. when all your friends have husbands or wives or boyfriends or girlfriends,

  80. in those moments, do you still act like God is in control?

  81. Or do you start to wonder whether or not he's actually powerful enough

  82. to be in control of everything that's happening in the world?

  83. Or what about in the good times?

  84. You get a promotion, you get a pay rise,

  85. you celebrate the birth of a child, an anniversary,

  86. you're feeling healthy, you're secure financially.

  87. At that point, do you stop and thank God for what he's given you?

  88. Or do you reflect on how hard you've worked

  89. and how wise you've been with your finances

  90. and how much exercise you've done

  91. and how you've looked after yourself health-wise?

  92. Yeah, we believe God is in control, we say it,

  93. but what about our actions?

  94. Do our lives actually speak that we believe that truth?

  95. Or is it just a trite theory that we throw out there occasionally

  96. because that's what we're supposed to believe as Christians?

  97. If there is a difference between what we say we believe

  98. and how we're living,

  99. then we need to ask God to show us what is really true.

  100. And we need to ask him to show it to us in such a way

  101. that our life matches up with what we claim to believe

  102. so that our words and our actions become one.

  103. And so tonight, maybe for you,

  104. you need to humbly come before God

  105. and ask him to shape how you live

  106. in light of the truth that he wants to show you tonight.

  107. I want to ask two questions as we wrestle with Jonah.

  108. Basically, can God and will God?

  109. Open up to Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  110. Is God really in control?

  111. Jonah is a man in a privileged position when it comes to God.

  112. So, bit of background, Jonah's a prophet,

  113. which means God speaks to Jonah

  114. and then, like, personally speaks to Jonah

  115. and then Jonah goes and passes that message on to other people.

  116. So, out of all the people,

  117. you would expect Jonah to have a level of confidence

  118. in God's sovereignty and power more than anyone else.

  119. He's got the direct line to God who created everything.

  120. He knows stuff.

  121. Jonah would speak to God's people.

  122. He knows that God is in control and he believes it.

  123. It's part of being a Hebrew.

  124. He would have memorized the Scriptures.

  125. He would have learned big chunks of the Old Testament

  126. so that he could have confidently quoted Scripture to you.

  127. But does his life actually match his so-called belief

  128. in God's control and God's sovereignty?

  129. Look at verse 1 with me.

  130. The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai.

  131. Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it

  132. because its wickedness has come up before me.

  133. But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.

  134. He went down to Joppa where he found a ship bound for that port.

  135. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish

  136. to flee from the Lord.

  137. Jonah knows that God is in control.

  138. That would have been one of the messages

  139. that he was told to keep proclaiming to the people

  140. and yet, given a specific instruction from God,

  141. he thinks he can run away.

  142. God sends him on a very specific mission.

  143. There's no possibility that he just got the city wrong

  144. and accidentally went in the wrong direction.

  145. God says, go to this city with this message

  146. and Jonah says, actually, no, I don't want to do that

  147. and I'm going to run away.

  148. It's kind of ridiculous.

  149. God, who created the whole earth,

  150. has given Jonah a job

  151. and he thinks by going to a city

  152. other than the one that God sent him to

  153. that he'll be able to get away from the God

  154. who created the whole earth,

  155. including the city that he's trying to run away to.

  156. It's kind of like when little kids play hide and seek

  157. and the way they hide is they cover their eyes

  158. and say, you can't see me.

  159. It doesn't actually work like that.

  160. I can still see you.

  161. I don't have the same limitation that you have.

  162. And Jonah is basically doing that to God.

  163. It's like covering his eyes and going,

  164. you can't find me.

  165. I've gone somewhere else.

  166. God knows exactly where he is.

  167. God is not limited like us.

  168. He is everywhere all the time.

  169. He is all-knowing.

  170. He knows Jonah's plans

  171. before he even decides to run away.

  172. And it is ridiculous

  173. that Jonah thinks he can run away

  174. from the God who has been speaking to him

  175. and giving him messages his life.

  176. But as ridiculous as it sounds,

  177. you and I do the same sort of thing.

  178. We get to the point in our life

  179. where we think we're more powerful than God.

  180. When we face struggles,

  181. when we face decisions,

  182. it is amazing how self-absorbed we can be

  183. to think that we will be better

  184. looking after ourselves.

  185. I mean, it doesn't take a lot of comparison

  186. to understand that we are fairly unimpressive

  187. when we stand next to God.

  188. Yet somehow we just block that out of our mind

  189. and act like I can handle this better than you, God.

  190. I'm struggling to pay rent,

  191. but I'm pretty sure I can somehow come up with it.

  192. And God is sitting there going,

  193. I made money.

  194. I made everything.

  195. I own everything.

  196. Yet we choose to trust ourselves.

  197. It doesn't take much looking at yourself

  198. to realise you're actually not in control of anything.

  199. One of the things that reminds me of this regularly

  200. is our inability to control the weather.

  201. Not that long ago,

  202. a fair few of us went to an engagement party

  203. for our resident meteorologist.

  204. It rained and we had to move the party to a house.

  205. You are not in control no matter how much you want to be.

  206. You are not in control of how many cars will be on the road

  207. when you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry.

  208. You are not even in control of your own health.

  209. You can try and do things like exercise and eat well

  210. that you think will make all the difference,

  211. but the reality is you're still not in control.

  212. I remember the day quite distinctly,

  213. several years ago,

  214. when after a series of tests and a whole bunch of issues,

  215. I was told that I had a disease

  216. and I would have it for the rest of my life.

  217. Now despite what some people would like to say,

  218. it's not the result of my lifestyle.

  219. It has nothing to do with what I have or haven't eaten.

  220. I just have a disease because that's the way God decided for my life to go.

  221. I am not in control and neither are you.

  222. No matter how hard I try, no matter how hard you try,

  223. no matter how fantastic you think you are,

  224. God alone is in control.

  225. He created heaven.

  226. He created earth.

  227. He did it just by speaking.

  228. God can make people sick.

  229. He sends plagues on Egypt.

  230. He can heal people.

  231. We see it over and over again in the gospel.

  232. He can part the Red Sea and people walk across as if it's dry land

  233. and he defeats even death in his son when he raises him.

  234. God can forgive sin and we are reminded over and over in scripture from Job 42.

  235. I know you can do all things.

  236. No plan of yours can be thwarted.

  237. Psalm 135.

  238. I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods.

  239. The Lord does whatever pleases him.

  240. There is nothing and no one that can stand between the creator God

  241. and his design and his desire.

  242. And yet, when we get faced with situations,

  243. we still think that we are more trustworthy than God

  244. when it comes to handling what is happening in our lives.

  245. Listen to how God achieves his purpose in Jonah.

  246. Look at verse 4.

  247. Jonah is running away and it says, verse 4,

  248. the Lord sent a great wind on the sea and such a violent storm arose

  249. that the ship threatened to break up.

  250. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own God

  251. and they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

  252. But Jonah had gone below deck where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

  253. Jonah is running away and God could have sent somebody else to go get Jonah.

  254. He could have forgotten about Jonah and sent somebody else to go to Nineveh.

  255. But God is so in control of every aspect of creation that he can just make a storm happen in such a way

  256. that sailors who spend their lives on the sea are so fearful for their life that they know this is not normal.

  257. They know somebody has made this storm happen.

  258. And straight away they start to ask questions.

  259. God can create a storm.

  260. God can provide a fish to swallow Jonah.

  261. It could have been judgment.

  262. It could have been him saving him.

  263. It's probably a bit of both.

  264. But what really matters is that it's God who provides the fish.

  265. It's there explicitly.

  266. Verse 17.

  267. The Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah

  268. and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

  269. It's God's mighty hand that guides these events.

  270. It's not an accident.

  271. It's not chance.

  272. It's not unlucky.

  273. It's God.

  274. Because God has a plan and that is for Nineveh to hear that they are living in a way that angers God

  275. and he has a plan to use Jonah to tell them

  276. and so he will do whatever he needs to do

  277. to make sure that Jonah gets to where he's supposed to be.

  278. When we grab even the smallest amount of how much greater God is than us,

  279. how much more powerful, how infinitely sovereign he is,

  280. suddenly our attempts to look after our own lives seem kind of stupid.

  281. The Bible describes our life as being like a mist

  282. that appears in the morning for a moment and then is burned up by the sun.

  283. Our God is eternal.

  284. We are less than a drop of water and he is more than an ocean.

  285. There is no comparison between our God and us.

  286. He is indescribably powerful.

  287. Powerful beyond our comprehension.

  288. There is absolutely nothing that is too big for God.

  289. There is no situation you will face that he is not powerful to change.

  290. So why is it that we still presume in our lives

  291. to think we can control things better than he can?

  292. Why is it that we hold on to things till the absolute last minute

  293. until we've been proved powerless before we give them to him?

  294. Why is it that we are so fearful of possibility and circumstance

  295. when God has shown himself time and time again

  296. to be all-powerful, to be in control?

  297. But maybe your issue isn't whether or not God can control things.

  298. Maybe your question, maybe the doubt in your life is,

  299. will God control things in my life?

  300. Will he control things in a way that is good for me?

  301. Maybe you can acknowledge God is powerful

  302. and his big plan of sending Jesus and saving people.

  303. Yep, I get that.

  304. He's in control.

  305. But whether or not I get picked on at school,

  306. whether or not I can afford to pay my rent,

  307. those are just kind of minor details

  308. and God doesn't have time for those.

  309. Maybe you're not confident that God cares enough

  310. to work into your specific day-to-day moments.

  311. I remember just after Sal and I got married,

  312. we moved into a fairly small house in Newtown.

  313. When we got there, there wasn't any furniture

  314. and being an old house, there wasn't any storage either.

  315. So I survived what most young married men fear,

  316. an afternoon trawling the aisles of Ikea.

  317. The only incentive to get me over the line

  318. was the $2 hot dog and Pepsi that was waiting at the end.

  319. And it's been incentive to get me back a few times as well.

  320. But somehow I survived our journey to Ikea

  321. and we managed to buy a cupboard that would house my clothes.

  322. And once we got home,

  323. people who know me know that I'm not particularly handy.

  324. I'm also not a details person.

  325. So I saw the picture on the front cover of the instructions

  326. and put that to the side and set to work

  327. putting together this flat pack cupboard.

  328. Now, I got to the end feeling pretty proud of myself

  329. with a handful of screws and nails left over.

  330. That is never a good sign.

  331. I also decided that putting the back on the cupboard

  332. was going to be a waste of effort

  333. because there was a lot of nails that had to go around that.

  334. And it already had sides in the top and bottom.

  335. So I put it up against the wall

  336. and it was kind of a little bit slanted.

  337. I could push it back straight

  338. and then I tried to hold it, but I gave up.

  339. So I had a slanted cupboard for a few years.

  340. But it held clothes.

  341. So that's what a cupboard's supposed to do.

  342. So I was content.

  343. It didn't look great.

  344. It was kind of broken really,

  345. but it was holding clothes and that was enough.

  346. Is that how you think God looks at you?

  347. Do you think he is only interested in you

  348. so long as you're breathing and a person

  349. and then from his perspective, he's ticked the box?

  350. Do you think that his interest in you finishes

  351. so long as you're alive?

  352. Do you think God doesn't care about the details of your life,

  353. that he's got bigger things to worry about?

  354. You need to understand that God is a master craftsman.

  355. God lovingly and carefully moulded you and shaped you.

  356. Before you were even born, before the earth existed,

  357. he planned every minute of every day that he would give you.

  358. The psalmist reminds us that God knits us together

  359. in our mother's womb.

  360. And as your heavenly father,

  361. God is intimately involved in every second of your life.

  362. God, as your heavenly father,

  363. is heavily invested in every second of your life.

  364. Parents don't give birth to their children

  365. and then shrug their shoulders and say,

  366. good luck, it's up to you now.

  367. Parents feed their children.

  368. They bathe their children.

  369. They clothe their children.

  370. They help them when they fall.

  371. They laugh with them.

  372. They cry with them.

  373. Even when children move out,

  374. parents continue to ride the bumps

  375. that go with kids having their own kids

  376. and all the other joys.

  377. God is our heavenly father

  378. and he cares so much more

  379. than any human parent.

  380. He can't and he won't leave us alone.

  381. Even when it seems like the details of your life

  382. are mundane and unimportant,

  383. God, as your heavenly father,

  384. cares so much for you

  385. that he cares so much about those details.

  386. Look at the way God manipulates

  387. and directs and guides minor details

  388. in Jonah's story

  389. so that he gets where he's supposed to get to.

  390. Verse 7.

  391. Then the sailors said to each other,

  392. come, let us cast lots

  393. to find out who is responsible

  394. for this calamity.

  395. They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

  396. So they asked him,

  397. tell us who is responsible

  398. for making all this trouble for us.

  399. What do you do?

  400. Where do you come from?

  401. What's your country?

  402. From what people are you?

  403. He answered, I am a Hebrew

  404. and I worship the Lord,

  405. the God of heaven

  406. who made the sea and the land.

  407. This terrified them

  408. and they asked,

  409. what have you done?

  410. They knew he was running away from the Lord

  411. because he had already told them so.

  412. The sea was getting rougher and rougher

  413. so they asked him,

  414. what should we do to you

  415. to make the sea calm down for us?

  416. Pick me up

  417. and throw me into the sea,

  418. he replied,

  419. and it will become calm.

  420. I know that it is my fault

  421. this great storm has come upon you.

  422. God makes sure

  423. that the lot falls with Jonah.

  424. It's not chance,

  425. it's not accident,

  426. it's not fluke.

  427. God makes sure

  428. that the lot falls with Jonah.

  429. God even guides Jonah's words

  430. and his conversation

  431. so that while Jonah

  432. is in the middle

  433. of running away

  434. from God's plan for his life,

  435. God can use him

  436. to proclaim to a boat

  437. full of scared sailors

  438. that the God in heaven

  439. is the one

  440. who controls the wind

  441. and the waves.

  442. In chapter 4,

  443. we see God grow a small tree

  444. to give Jonah shade.

  445. In 1 Samuel,

  446. we see God hear

  447. the individual prayers

  448. of a barren woman

  449. and he gives her a son.

  450. God has painstakingly

  451. planned out all of creation

  452. from day dot in the garden

  453. until it comes

  454. to its rightful conclusion

  455. and not one day,

  456. not one minute,

  457. not one second

  458. has been left to chance

  459. in God's plan.

  460. There is no maybe

  461. in God's design.

  462. Such is his infinite wisdom

  463. and power

  464. and such is his love

  465. and care

  466. that he is perfectly

  467. in control.

  468. There is nothing

  469. that can stop God

  470. but he is so loving

  471. that even the unimportant

  472. or mundane details

  473. to us

  474. matter to him.

  475. Now I need to warn you

  476. before we move on

  477. just because God can

  478. and just because God loves you

  479. doesn't mean

  480. he will always do

  481. what you want.

  482. It could be that

  483. you don't think

  484. or you question

  485. God's sovereignty

  486. because you have

  487. prayed for something

  488. and you didn't get it

  489. because you have prayed

  490. to avoid something

  491. and you did get it.

  492. God doesn't always promise

  493. to do it our way.

  494. What he does promise

  495. is that he is

  496. infinitely powerful,

  497. there is nothing

  498. that can stand in his way

  499. and that he loves us.

  500. That's what he promises.

  501. He does promise

  502. that he will always

  503. work for our good

  504. but he never promises

  505. that our good

  506. will always line up

  507. with what we think

  508. it should be.

  509. God is powerful

  510. beyond our comprehension

  511. and he cares more

  512. than we will ever

  513. begin to understand

  514. in this life.

  515. life.

  516. If you question

  517. whether or not God

  518. can work in your situation,

  519. the answer is found

  520. in Jesus.

  521. If you question

  522. whether or not God

  523. wants to work

  524. in your situation,

  525. the answer is found

  526. in Jesus.

  527. When we get to Jesus,

  528. we face

  529. the most formidable foe

  530. that this life knows,

  531. death.

  532. And in Jesus'

  533. death and resurrection,

  534. God proves that there is

  535. nothing more powerful

  536. than him.

  537. He proves to you

  538. that there is nothing

  539. you will face

  540. in your life

  541. that he is not

  542. sovereign over.

  543. And in giving us Jesus,

  544. he proves that there is

  545. nothing that he will

  546. hold back.

  547. Let me read to you

  548. a verse from Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  549. chapter 8.

  550. He who did not

  551. spare his own son

  552. but gave him up

  553. for us all,

  554. how will he not

  555. also along with him

  556. graciously give us

  557. all things?

  558. In the moments

  559. where you doubt

  560. God's love for you

  561. and his willingness

  562. to pay whatever it costs

  563. to ensure

  564. that you are cared for,

  565. that your life

  566. is for your good

  567. and his glory,

  568. remember Jesus.

  569. God has already

  570. given you the most

  571. valuable thing

  572. he could give you.

  573. He's already paid

  574. the highest cost

  575. he could pay.

  576. And it is ridiculous

  577. to think that

  578. having sacrificed

  579. his son,

  580. he would then

  581. hold back

  582. on something else,

  583. something small.

  584. The answer

  585. to our doubt

  586. is Jesus.

  587. The answer

  588. to our fear

  589. is Jesus.

  590. But the question

  591. remains,

  592. what will it look like

  593. for us to not

  594. simply believe

  595. that God is sovereign,

  596. what will it look like

  597. for us to live

  598. that conviction?

  599. What will it look like

  600. to show others

  601. that we are confident

  602. in that?

  603. Let me suggest

  604. two things.

  605. Firstly,

  606. if you really believe

  607. that God is in control

  608. of every part

  609. of your life

  610. and all of this creation,

  611. then you will pray more.

  612. Now that sounds

  613. counterintuitive

  614. because we think

  615. if God's sovereign

  616. and he's in control,

  617. then God's going to do

  618. what God's going to do

  619. and there's no point

  620. to pray.

  621. But if you believe

  622. that God is powerful,

  623. if you believe

  624. that God loves you,

  625. then when you are in need,

  626. you will fall on your knees

  627. and cry out

  628. to the one person

  629. who has the power

  630. to redeem you,

  631. to save you,

  632. to provide for you.

  633. The one person

  634. who has the power

  635. to work in every situation.

  636. In good times,

  637. you will stop

  638. thanking yourself

  639. because you will recognize

  640. that it is God

  641. who has given you

  642. the blessings.

  643. You will pray

  644. to thank him

  645. for your life,

  646. for your home,

  647. for oxygen,

  648. for beautiful weather,

  649. for friends,

  650. for family,

  651. for the countless

  652. good things

  653. he has given you.

  654. When you believe

  655. that God is sovereign

  656. and in control,

  657. then like Job,

  658. you will be able

  659. to proclaim,

  660. naked I came

  661. from my mother's womb,

  662. naked I will depart,

  663. the Lord gave

  664. and the Lord has taken away,

  665. may the name

  666. of the Lord be praised.

  667. In darkness

  668. and suffering,

  669. you will still

  670. be confident

  671. because your God

  672. is powerful

  673. and your God

  674. loves you.

  675. Second thing,

  676. knowing that God

  677. is in control

  678. means peace.

  679. Doesn't mean

  680. that your life

  681. will be easy,

  682. doesn't mean

  683. that it will be

  684. event free

  685. or pain free,

  686. but a life

  687. that is confident

  688. in a powerful

  689. loving God,

  690. a life that is confident

  691. in his unbreakable

  692. promise to always,

  693. in all things,

  694. work for the good

  695. of those who love him.

  696. That means,

  697. good or bad,

  698. whether you can see

  699. how God's working

  700. or not,

  701. if you know

  702. your powerful

  703. loving God,

  704. you can be confident

  705. that his plan

  706. is still being

  707. accomplished.

  708. That even as you

  709. suffer and struggle,

  710. that God is loving

  711. you in that moment,

  712. that he is there

  713. with you

  714. and that he is

  715. working for your

  716. good and his glory.

  717. We have the great

  718. promise of scripture,

  719. Jesus' own words

  720. in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  721. I give them

  722. eternal life

  723. and they shall

  724. never perish,

  725. no one can snatch

  726. them out of my hand.

  727. God's plan

  728. for your life

  729. finishes in heaven

  730. with him.

  731. And Jesus promises

  732. here that nothing

  733. can change that.

  734. Once you have

  735. trusted him,

  736. no circumstance,

  737. no doubt,

  738. no suffering,

  739. no pain,

  740. nothing can snatch

  741. you out of his hand.

  742. And so whatever

  743. you face in your life,

  744. you can rejoice

  745. confidently in your

  746. God who is

  747. infinitely powerful

  748. and infinitely loving.

  749. With your eternity

  750. secure,

  751. it is so much easier

  752. to live in the

  753. temporary difficulties

  754. that we face now

  755. because nothing

  756. can snatch us

  757. out of his hand.

  758. God's sovereignty

  759. will lead us

  760. to prayer

  761. and peace

  762. just like it did

  763. for Jonah.

  764. In chapter 2,

  765. just after what

  766. Gus read,

  767. from the belly

  768. of the fish,

  769. Jonah finally

  770. realizes he

  771. can't run

  772. from God.

  773. God's plan

  774. will not be

  775. stopped.

  776. And so how

  777. does he respond?

  778. He prays.

  779. He prays

  780. because in that

  781. helpless moment

  782. he recognizes

  783. again and afresh

  784. God is powerful

  785. but God is loving.

  786. God sent that fish

  787. to make sure

  788. Jonah couldn't

  789. get away

  790. but also to save

  791. him

  792. and to give him

  793. a second chance

  794. to fulfill the purpose

  795. that God

  796. had given him.

  797. Jonah still

  798. stuffs up,

  799. he still questions

  800. God,

  801. he still makes

  802. mistakes even

  803. through the rest

  804. of this book

  805. but as he is

  806. confronted with

  807. his powerful

  808. loving God

  809. he prays

  810. and he stops

  811. running

  812. and he trusts.

  813. Just as we finish

  814. I want to give you

  815. two challenges.

  816. We're beginning

  817. a new year.

  818. We're a week in

  819. and maybe you

  820. didn't make

  821. a new year's

  822. resolution,

  823. maybe you did,

  824. it doesn't really

  825. matter.

  826. Forget about

  827. new year

  828. and just see

  829. today as an

  830. opportunity to

  831. start.

  832. I want to suggest

  833. two things

  834. that I think

  835. will help you

  836. this year begin

  837. to believe

  838. that God is in

  839. control.

  840. Not to just say

  841. it, not just to

  842. be able to

  843. articulate it

  844. but to truly

  845. believe.

  846. Firstly,

  847. get to know

  848. what God has

  849. promised you.

  850. I think that

  851. one of the basic

  852. things that leads

  853. us to doubt

  854. God's goodness

  855. is that we

  856. actually don't

  857. know what it

  858. is that he's

  859. promised us.

  860. And so in our

  861. moment of suffering

  862. or our moment

  863. of need,

  864. we doubt God

  865. because he's not

  866. giving us what

  867. we want and we

  868. think that he

  869. should.

  870. But it might be

  871. that he hasn't

  872. promised that.

  873. My disease will

  874. continue in my

  875. body for as long

  876. as God leaves it

  877. there or until

  878. Jesus comes back.

  879. I have a deep

  880. desire that he

  881. would take it

  882. away, it would

  883. make my life

  884. easier.

  885. But God has

  886. not promised

  887. anywhere that he

  888. will do that.

  889. When Jesus

  890. comes back, I

  891. know then,

  892. finally, my

  893. body will be

  894. cleansed and

  895. all sickness

  896. and death

  897. will be removed,

  898. but until then

  899. there is no

  900. promise that

  901. that sickness

  902. will get healed.

  903. But God

  904. does promise

  905. me that in

  906. all things he

  907. is working

  908. for my

  909. good.

  910. If we don't

  911. know the

  912. promises of

  913. God in our

  914. dark times and

  915. in our doubt

  916. and in our

  917. good times,

  918. we will be

  919. distracted, we

  920. will doubt, we

  921. will question,

  922. but when we

  923. grab hold of

  924. what God has

  925. guaranteed in

  926. his son Jesus,

  927. we will know

  928. the peace and

  929. the confidence

  930. of dearly loved

  931. children.

  932. Lastly,

  933. sorry, just

  934. before I move

  935. on, let me

  936. re-endorse what

  937. Janet talked about

  938. before, the

  939. Bible reading

  940. plan.

  941. If you're already

  942. reading the Bible

  943. another way, that's

  944. fantastic, but if

  945. you're like me, I've

  946. been a Christian for a

  947. long time and

  948. still every year I

  949. struggle to be

  950. committed in the

  951. way I spend time

  952. in the Word.

  953. This would be a

  954. great thing for us

  955. to do because we

  956. would all be

  957. reading it together

  958. or even a whole

  959. bunch of us reading

  960. it together and

  961. encouraging one

  962. another with what

  963. God is teaching

  964. us and praying for

  965. one another in line

  966. with what God is

  967. teaching us.

  968. If you struggle and

  969. you need structure,

  970. please get that

  971. Bible reading plan.

  972. It's not perfect,

  973. but it's designed to

  974. help you get to know

  975. the promises of God

  976. so that you can

  977. believe that God is

  978. powerful and that

  979. God loves you.

  980. And lastly, pray.

  981. Ask for God to

  982. help you to trust

  983. him.

  984. No amount of

  985. trying really hard

  986. to trust God will

  987. actually achieve it.

  988. No amount of

  989. gritting your teeth

  990. will actually make

  991. the difference.

  992. For us to trust

  993. God, we need to

  994. see him in all his

  995. power and glory.

  996. We need to see his

  997. love in Jesus on

  998. the cross and we

  999. need God's Holy

  1000. Spirit to do that

  1001. in us.

  1002. We need him to

  1003. transform our hearts

1004. so that what we can

  1005. say and what we

  1006. think becomes what we

  1007. believe and how we

  1008. live.

  1009. So pray.

  1010. And not just for

  1011. yourself.

  1012. Pray for your

  1013. brothers and sisters

  1014. around you.

  1015. Pray that we would

1016. be a people marked by

  1017. confidence in our

  1018. sovereign God.

  1019. Pray that people,

  1020. when they meet us,

  1021. before we even say

1022. the words, God is in

  1023. control, they would

1024. see a peace in us

  1025. that can't be explained

  1026. any other way.

  1027. Pray that we would

  1028. be a community that

  1029. declares the majesty

  1030. and glory of our

  1031. mighty, sovereign,

  1032. powerful and loving

  1033. creator for his

  1034. sake.

  1035. Give you a

  1036. â.
