  1. It is good to be in church with you this morning.

  2. We're coming to the end of January,

  3. which means hopefully you're starting to click out of holiday mode

  4. if you had the privilege of being in holiday mode.

  5. I'm sure work is coming back, school is about to go back.

  6. Here at church, life is getting very busy,

  7. particularly if you work in the youth department,

  8. as we prepare to take our kids away for five days and four nights.

  9. I know a few parents that are very appreciative

  10. that we're going to give them a relaxing week off,

  11. but it is busy and we're about to actually finish our Jonah series today

  12. and then we'll be launching into a very exciting series,

  13. not next week but the week after,

  14. wrestling with who our God is,

  15. wrestling with the question of the Trinity.

  16. Now I wanted to warn you up front because that's sometimes a scary word,

  17. but it's an important thing for us to wrestle with

  18. and so we're going to spend quite a few weeks wrestling with that

  19. and what that means for us as followers of Jesus.

  20. So please be praying for the staff who are going to be preaching in that series,

  21. that they won't just be talking over here and we'll all miss it,

  22. but pray that as we wrestle with who our God is,

  23. that that will shape us and change us.

  24. But that said, let me pray and then we'll get stuck into finishing up

  25. what we've been looking at through January and Jonah.

  26. Father God, we want to thank you for the opportunity this morning to gather.

  27. Father, we want to thank you for the slightly cooler weather.

  28. We want to thank you for the gift that you have given us in your word

  29. that we might hear you speak,

  30. that you may work in us by the power of your spirit

  31. and we ask that this morning that that would happen,

  32. that it would not just be us sitting in the room together,

  33. but that it would be your will being done

  34. and that we would be transformed as a result of being here.

  35. Amen.

  36. Just to quickly remind you where we've been in the last couple of weeks,

  37. two weeks ago we opened up Jonah 1

  38. and kind of looked a bit beyond Jonah 1 as well,

  39. but we were reminded that God is sovereign,

  40. that God's will is unstoppable,

  41. that even disobedient Jonah and disobedient us

  42. can't stop what God is doing.

  43. A week later we were reminded that God is a God who speaks

  44. and when God speaks, stuff happens

  45. and we were reminded that God speaks to us in his word

  46. and so when we gather and have God speak to us,

  47. stuff happens.

  48. And so it is important that as we approach this morning

  49. that we're ready for stuff to happen.

  50. We're ready for God to do what he is going to do.

  51. And so today we're going to open up Jonah chapter 4

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  52. and we're going to look a little bit back into Jonah as well

  53. at one final thing about God

  54. that I think the story of Jonah teaches us.

  55. I don't know if you've noticed,

  56. but something that I think all people are born with

  57. is a sense of justice.

  58. I have the joy of seeing this in action

  59. in a 10-month-old at the moment.

  60. It is amazing how even at 10 months old,

  61. Bailey knows when somebody has stolen what is his.

  62. If he has a toy that belongs to him

  63. and somebody else wants to play with it,

  64. he knows that he is entitled to that toy

  65. because it's his.

  66. And so if they steal it,

  67. he is pretty quick to take it back

  68. or to go and find something of theirs

  69. that he can steal to balance the ledger.

  70. He met his cousins for the first time over Christmas

  71. and they're all still a little bit uncoordinated.

  72. And so one cousin would push the other cousin over

  73. and Bailey would very quickly grab them by the hair

  74. and try and bang their head on the floor.

  75. I maintain it was good-spirited,

  76. but the reality is that even at that young age,

  77. he knows that when something is done,

  78. there is an equal reaction.

  79. There is justice that is due.

  80. They say that the best way to split a piece of cake in half

  81. for two kids is to ask one to cut it

  82. and the other one gets to choose.

  83. You can be sure that it will be exactly down the middle.

  84. But funnily enough,

  85. we have the exact same sense of justice as we get older.

  86. We try and be a little bit more subtle

  87. about what we think we're entitled to,

  88. but you know that feeling when you're sitting in the car in traffic

  89. and somebody sneaks up the bus lane

  90. and there's just this anger and rage

  91. that makes you want to zip out at the last minute

  92. and have them jam on the brakes

  93. and you don't want to let them pass

  94. because you're doing the right thing

  95. and you're entitled to be in front of that person.

  96. Maybe it's at work.

  97. You're being honest.

  98. You are making sure that you let the boss know

  99. what you're spending on what

  100. and you are not cheating in any way, shape or form,

  101. but for some reason the people who are cheating

  102. seem to be doing better than you.

  103. They seem to have that little bit more money.

  104. They seem to be first in line for promotion

  105. and we have that sense in us that this isn't right.

  106. We know what we deserve

  107. and we want what we deserve.

  108. We don't think that's unreasonable.

  109. It's not unrealistic.

  110. We just want what we have earned,

  111. what we are entitled to.

  112. But the problem is

  113. that we do the same thing with God.

  114. We want what we deserve with God.

  115. We want Him to be loving towards us.

  116. We want Him to look after us.

  117. We want Him to protect us.

  118. We want Him to make us healthy and well.

  119. But is that what we deserve from God?

  120. Is that what we are entitled to?

  121. As we look at the story of Jonah,

  122. I want to show you the way God responds to people.

  123. Look quickly with me at chapter 3,

  124. which we looked at last week.

  125. Jonah has arrived at the city of Nineveh.

  126. He has proclaimed that Nineveh will be destroyed

  127. because of how it has been living

  128. and then Nineveh repents.

  129. Verse 7.

  130. The king gets up.

  131. He issues a proclamation

  132. by decree of the king and his nobles.

  133. Do not let any man or beast,

  134. herd or flock, taste anything.

  135. Do not let them eat or drink,

  136. but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth.

  137. Let everyone call urgently on God.

  138. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

  139. Who knows?

  140. God may yet relent and with compassion

  141. turn from His fierce anger

  142. so that we will not perish.

  143. Does God have to

  144. forgive Nineveh at this point?

  145. They've repented.

  146. They've showed some obvious remorse.

  147. They're fasting.

  148. Even the king has gotten off his throne.

  149. He's put sackcloth on.

  150. He's showing that they know

  151. they did the wrong thing.

  152. He's showing that he knows

  153. he's accountable to God.

  154. But the question is,

  155. does God have to

  156. stop delivering the promised judgment

  157. that He had sent?

  158. What about with Jonah in chapter 4?

  159. Jonah sits outside the city

  160. all frustrated and angry

  161. and God provides a vine

  162. to give him shade.

  163. Does God have to

  164. provide that vine for Jonah?

  165. Does Jonah deserve

  166. that vine?

  167. Does Nineveh deserve

  168. God's forgiveness?

  169. Now, Jonah might be

  170. an easier answer,

  171. but for those of you

  172. who maybe feel

  173. a little bit inside

  174. that maybe Nineveh

  175. does deserve

  176. God's forgiveness.

  177. I mean,

  178. they're saying sorry.

  179. They're acting sorry.

  180. It's not even just words.

  181. They obviously mean it.

  182. I want you to imagine

  183. for just a second

  184. that somebody

  185. breaks into your house.

  186. You're home

  187. and so to steal

  188. the things that they want to steal,

  189. they have to

  190. physically restrain you,

  191. perhaps hurt you

  192. and they go through your house

  193. stealing things

  194. that matter to you,

  195. stealing family heirlooms,

  196. trashing your place

  197. and from that point on

  198. you will never feel

  199. quite as safe

  200. as you once did

  201. in your home.

  202. Now,

  203. eventually the police

  204. manage to catch

  205. this person

  206. who has broken

  207. into your house,

  208. who has stolen your things,

  209. who has attacked you

  210. and throughout the trial

  211. it's obvious

  212. that this person

  213. is guilty.

  214. It's obvious

  215. that they've done

  216. the wrong thing.

  217. When it comes time

  218. for sentencing,

  219. the robber says,

  220. I'm really sorry

  221. and really means it.

  222. You can tell,

  223. somehow you just know

  224. that there is genuine remorse

  225. in what they're saying.

  226. Would you be okay

  227. if they just got let off?

  228. They're saying,

  229. sorry.

  230. Is that enough?

  231. Of course not.

  232. It's not unloving

  233. for you to want justice

  234. in that situation.

  235. It's not wrong

  236. for you to want justice

  237. in that situation.

  238. That person has done

  239. something illegal.

  240. They have hurt you.

  241. They have harmed you.

  242. And so it is good

  243. and right

  244. that they face

  245. punishment for that.

  246. And the same

  247. is true with God.

  248. It's good

  249. that Nineveh

  250. has apologized,

  251. that Nineveh

  252. is repentant,

  253. that Nineveh

  254. is remorseful.

  255. But it doesn't

  256. therefore mean

  257. that God

  258. must forgive them.

  259. Justice still

  260. needs to be done.

  261. Their wickedness

  262. was at the point

  263. where God would decree

  264. that the whole city

  265. will be destroyed.

  266. And so sorry

  267. does not cover over

  268. what they've done.

  269. Grace at its heart

  270. fundamentally

  271. is something

  272. that you don't

  273. deserve.

  274. God's goodness

  275. to Nineveh

  276. in holding

  277. his judgment back,

  278. God's goodness

  279. to Jonah

  280. in providing

  281. a tree,

  282. in providing

  283. a fish,

  284. is not

  285. what they deserve.

  286. It is a gift

  287. from God

  288. that is very

  289. generously given.

  290. See the issue

  291. that we face

  292. in chapter 4

  293. and verse 1,

  294. Jonah is greatly

  295. displeased

  296. because of God's

  297. grace.

  298. Jonah is angry

  299. that God

  300. is showing grace

  301. to Nineveh.

  302. He is frustrated

  303. because in his eyes

  304. Nineveh

  305. deserves

  306. punishment,

  307. deserves

  308. judgment.

  309. I mean,

  310. if you can

  311. understand why

  312. Jonah feels

  313. this way,

  314. Nineveh is a city

  315. that has repeatedly

  316. attacked Israel,

  317. God's people,

  318. of whom Jonah

  319. is one,

  320. and will continue

  321. to attack.

  322. And so Jonah

  323. looks at this city

  324. and he's like,

  325. God,

  326. what are you doing?

  327. They deserve

  328. your punishment.

  329. They're not like us.

  330. We're your people.

  331. They deserve

  332. to be crushed

  333. and destroyed.

  334. He's sitting outside.

  335. He gets a good vantage point.

  336. It's like New Year's Eve

  337. fireworks for him.

  338. He wants to see

  339. how spectacular

  340. God's judgment

  341. will be

  342. because these people

  343. are wicked

  344. and they deserve

  345. to be crushed

  346. by God.

  347. But can you see

  348. the problem?

  349. Jonah has gone

  350. from being somebody

  351. who has received

  352. this gift of grace,

  353. received this gift

  354. that he did not deserve,

  355. he's gone from

  356. being someone

  357. thankful

  358. to being somebody

  359. who thinks

  360. he's entitled,

  361. to somebody

  362. who thinks

  363. it's his right

  364. that God

  365. should forgive him,

  366. that God

  367. should love him,

  368. that God

  369. should protect him.

  370. And we do

  371. the same thing.

  372. When we first

  373. become Christians,

  374. there is not

  375. even a hint

  376. of,

  377. I deserve this.

  378. So it's not

  379. how it works.

  380. Essential to

  381. becoming a Christian

  382. is realising

  383. we need God

  384. to do something

  385. for us

  386. that we can't

  387. do ourselves.

  388. But somehow

  389. from that point,

  390. slowly but surely,

  391. we become people

  392. who deserve

  393. God's grace.

  394. And you can tell

  395. because just like Jonah,

  396. we start to look

  397. at other people

  398. who we think

  399. don't deserve it,

  400. shouldn't receive it,

  401. aren't entitled to it.

  402. Think of the way

  403. you respond

  404. to those

  405. who annoy you,

  406. those who hurt you,

  407. how would you feel

  408. if

  409. a rapist

  410. was to walk

  411. into church

  412. and say,

  413. I want to know God?

  414. How would you feel

  415. if a murderer

  416. was to walk

  417. into church

  418. and say,

  419. I want to be forgiven,

  420. I know I've done

  421. the wrong thing?

  422. Would you have

  423. this sense of joy

  424. that somebody

  425. has come from

  426. such darkness

  427. to know the life

  428. that is in Jesus?

  429. or maybe like Jonah,

  430. if we're honest,

  431. we would think

  432. they don't deserve

  433. to be here.

  434. They don't deserve

  435. God's forgiveness

  436. no matter how much

  437. they apologize.

  438. But me,

  439. I deserve it.

  440. This is mine.

  441. This is what

  442. I'm entitled to.

  443. We've got to understand

  444. like Jonah needed

  445. to understand

  446. we are sinful

  447. just like everyone else.

  448. Jonah was a prophet,

  449. he was part of God's people,

  450. he was in a privileged position

  451. but he was still sinful

  452. and he deserved

  453. from God

  454. the same kind of judgment

  455. that God promised

  456. for Nineveh.

  457. It actually doesn't take

  458. that much honest

  459. self-reflection

  460. to realize that

  461. all you deserve

  462. from God

  463. is judgment.

  464. We need to be

  465. very careful

  466. that in the grace

  467. that he has shown us

  468. that we don't stop

  469. seeing ourselves rightly.

  470. God has been good

  471. to us

  472. but not because

  473. of who we are.

  474. God has given us

  475. grace

  476. which by definition

  477. is something

  478. that we don't deserve.

  479. There is no pattern

  480. in Jonah

  481. or in life

  482. for the recipients

  483. of grace.

  484. Look again

  485. at chapter 3.

  486. Having just made

  487. their decree

  488. at the end of verse 9

  489. the king says

  490. who knows

  491. God may

  492. yet relent

  493. and with compassion

  494. turn from his fierce anger

  495. so that we will not perish.

  496. There is no confidence

  497. that because they have repented

  498. God must

  499. or God will

  500. and in verse 10

  501. when God saw

  502. what they did

  503. and how they turned

  504. from their evil ways

  505. he had compassion

  506. and did not bring upon them

  507. the destruction

  508. he had threatened.

  509. Have a look at

  510. chapter 2

  511. verse 7

  512. This is Jonah's prayer

  513. from inside the fish

  514. When my life

  515. was ebbing away

  516. I remembered you Lord

  517. and my prayer

  518. rose to you

  519. to your holy temple

  520. Those who cling

  521. to worthless idols

  522. forfeit the grace

  523. that could be theirs

  524. but I

  525. with a song of thanksgiving

  526. will sacrifice to you

  527. what I have vowed

  528. I will make good

  529. salvation

  530. comes from the Lord.

  531. Now it feels like

  532. there is a bit of similarity

  533. Jonah admits

  534. that he has done

  535. the wrong thing

  536. and thanks God

  537. for grace

  538. but just look

  539. a little bit closer

  540. Nineveh repents

  541. hoping that God

  542. might forgive them

  543. Jonah has already

  544. been saved by God

  545. Jonah was thrown

  546. into the sea

  547. and rescued by God

  548. into the belly

  549. of a fish

  550. and having been saved

  551. he thanks God

  552. for his salvation

  553. Nineveh

  554. says sorry

  555. and pleads for help

  556. Jonah is still

  557. running away

  558. when God chooses

  559. to show him grace

  560. there is no

  561. commonality

  562. between the two

  563. that we can say

  564. this is what you must do

  565. to get grace from God

  566. this is who is worthy

  567. of God's grace

  568. Jonah is almost

  569. just like a spoilt

  570. child at this point

  571. I'm sure you've been

  572. in the shops

  573. and seen that child

  574. who is yelling

  575. and screaming

  576. and insisting

  577. that mummy buys

  578. another lolly

  579. or another toy

  580. or whatever it is

  581. and if mum gives in

  582. and gives that lolly

  583. or toy

  584. the child is ecstatic

  585. for at least five minutes

  586. before they've found

  587. something new

  588. that they want

  589. Jonah is running

  590. from God

  591. and in chapter 2

  592. having been saved

  593. he is overwhelmed

  594. with God's grace

  595. and salvation

  596. but by chapter 4

  597. he is angry

  598. at what God is doing

  599. there is nothing

  600. in Jonah

  601. that makes him worthy

  602. of God's grace

  603. and love

  604. of the goodness

  605. that God has shown

  606. what we see

  607. when we look

  608. at this story

  609. what we see

  610. when we look

  611. at grace

  612. is that it's about

  613. the giver

  614. not the receiver

  615. grace is all

  616. about God

  617. last week

  618. we reminded

  619. that God's word

  620. is all about God

  621. it's always there

  622. to point us

  623. to God

  624. and this story

  625. of Jonah

  626. and the grace

  627. that God shows

  628. is to tell us

  629. that God is gracious

  630. and that he is

  631. compassionate

  632. there was a clue

  633. there in chapter 3

  634. verse 10

  635. when God saw

  636. what they did

  637. and how they turned

  638. from their evil ways

  639. he had compassion

  640. on them

  641. compassion is from

  642. within God

  643. it's something

  644. he generates

  645. it begins with him

  646. it ends with him

  647. it comes from him

  648. everything

  649. is generated

  650. by the giver

  651. when it comes

  652. to grace

  653. grace tells us

  654. that our God

  655. is slow to anger

  656. that he is abounding

  657. in love

  658. and that he forgives

  659. even unworthy

  660. servants

  661. like Nineveh

  662. like Jonah

  663. and like us

  664. God's grace

  665. to us

  666. does not say

  667. that we are important

  668. God's grace

  669. to us

  670. does not say

  671. that we are good

  672. God's grace

  673. to us

  674. shows us

  675. his incredible love

  676. when we grasp

  677. for just a second

  678. that God

  679. sees us

  680. like he sees

  681. Nineveh

  682. that God

  683. sees us

  684. like he sees

  685. Jonah

  686. as sinful

  687. as disobedient

  688. as rebellious

  689. we understand

  690. that God's grace

  691. to us

  692. is about him

  693. it's not about us

  694. it's about his

  695. willingness to love

  696. people

  697. who refuse

  698. to obey him

  699. people who are

  700. running from him

  701. people who ignore him

  702. 95% of their lives

  703. grace

  704. grace

  705. is about

  706. the God

  707. who gives

  708. grace

  709. not about those

  710. he gives grace

  711. to

  712. God's grace

  713. to us

  714. is that

  715. instead of

  716. giving us

  717. the judgment

  718. and punishment

  719. that we deserve

  720. he gives us

  721. Jesus

  722. God's grace

  723. to us

  724. is put on

  725. display

  726. when you read

  727. a chapter

  728. like Romans

    Romans 3:10

  729. 3

  730. verse 10

  731. of chapter 3

  732. says

  733. there is no one

  734. righteous

  735. not even one

  736. no one who

  737. understands

  738. no one who

  739. seeks God

  740. all have

  741. turned away

  742. they have

  743. together

  744. become

  745. worthless

  746. there is no one

  747. who does good

  748. not even one

  749. that's the picture

  750. God sees

  751. that's the situation

  752. we're in

  753. we are unacceptable

  754. we are detestable

  755. and yet

  756. God looks

  757. and with compassion

  758. gives us

  759. Jesus

  760. we must

  761. understand

  762. the depths

  763. of our own

  764. sinfulness

  765. if we are going

  766. to understand

  767. the grace

  768. of our God

  769. when we confess

  770. like we did

  771. just earlier

  772. when Lindy led us

  773. and we do regularly

  774. here in our services

  775. we must be careful

  776. not to just

  777. mouth those words

  778. without actually

  779. reflecting on the fact

  780. that there are

  781. things in us

  782. today

  783. potentially in the

  784. last hour

  785. in the last 10 minutes

  786. that we need

  787. to confess

  788. because only

  789. when we recognise

  790. those things

  791. will we begin

  792. to grasp

  793. the depth

  794. and breadth

  795. of God's

  796. incredible love

  797. and grace

  798. to us

  799. in Jesus

  800. that like

  801. Jonah

  802. we can sit

  803. angry

  804. outside the wall

  805. that God

  806. would show

  807. grace to another

  808. and yet

  809. his grace

  810. is so far

  811. reaching

  812. that that does

  813. not cancel out

  814. what God

  815. has done

  816. for us

  817. it is all

  818. because of God

  819. all because

  820. of what he

  821. has done

  822. and all because

  823. of the love

  824. that he has

  825. shown us

  826. God's grace

  827. when you begin

  828. to grasp it

  829. is overwhelming

  830. the last verse

  831. of Jonah

  832. is significant

  833. having challenged

  834. Jonah

  835. God says

  836. this

  837. Nineveh has

  838. more than

  839. 120,000

  840. people

  841. who cannot

  842. tell their

  843. right hand

  844. from their

  845. left

  846. and many

  847. cattle as

  848. well

  849. should I

  850. not be

  851. concerned

  852. about that

  853. great city

  854. God's grace

  855. is not

  856. dictated

  857. by

  858. how worthy

  859. the people

  860. in front

  861. of him

  862. are

  863. God's

  864. grace

  865. is dictated

  866. by the

  867. need for

  868. grace

  869. that he

  870. sees

  871. in front

  872. of him

  873. I wonder

  874. how you

  875. look at

  876. people

  877. around you

  878. do you

  879. look at

  880. them based

  881. on how

  882. they treat

  883. you

  884. based on

  885. the things

  886. that they

  887. say

  888. the clothes

  889. that they

  890. wear

  891. the job

  892. that they

  893. have

  894. the things

  895. they do

  896. in their

  897. spare time

  898. or do

  899. you look

  900. at them

  901. as somebody

  902. who needs

  903. God's

  904. grace

  905. or knows

  906. God's

  907. grace

  908. they're the

  909. only two

  910. categories

  911. God has

  912. those who

  913. need

  914. God's

  915. grace

  916. or those

  917. who know

  918. God's

  919. grace

  920. for us

  921. who know

  922. the forgiveness

  923. that comes

  924. in Jesus

  925. for us

  926. who know

  927. the love

  928. that reaches

  929. us when

  930. we are

  931. still running

  932. that chases

  933. us down

  934. that does

  935. not fail

  936. there is

  937. no room

  938. for pride

  939. no room

  940. for entitlement

  941. what I

  942. deserve

  943. is a word

  944. that I let

  945. go of

  946. when I

  947. start to

  948. follow

  949. Jesus

  950. what I'm

  951. entitled

  952. to

  953. is something

  954. that I

  955. let go

  956. of

  957. when I

  958. follow

  959. Jesus

  960. because

  961. everything

  962. is now

  963. defined

  964. by what

  965. God

  966. gives me

  967. because of

  968. his

  969. great love

  970. not because

  971. of what I

  972. deserve

  973. there is no

  974. room for

  975. boasting

  976. and no

  977. room for

  978. pride

  979. only

  980. gratitude

  981. and

  982. thankfulness

  983. one of

  984. the things

  985. that we

  986. have started

  987. doing in

  988. youth ministry

  989. here at

  990. St Paul's

  991. and that I

  992. also did

  993. in my

  994. previous

  995. church

  996. is we

  997. made a

  998. decision

  999. and if

  1000. I'm honest

  1001. I made

  1002. a decision

  1003. and told

  1004. everyone

  1005. else

  1006. we decided

  1007. that we

  1008. would preach

  1009. through the

  1010. gospels

  1011. through Matthew

  1012. Mark

  1013. Luke and

  1014. John

  1015. every week

  1016. we did

  1017. Mark for

  1018. almost two

  1019. years

  1020. we have

  1021. just begun

  1022. John

  1023. and we are

  1024. working through

  1025. that

  1026. summer camp is

  1027. going to help

  1028. us make

  1029. some progress

  1030. forward

  1031. and next

  1032. year we

  1033. will begin

  1034. Luke

  1035. and that

  1036. will probably

  1037. take us

  1038. two or

  1039. three years

  1040. to get

  1041. through

  1042. we are

  1043. just doing

  1044. it a little

  1045. bit at a

  1046. time

  1047. just working

  1048. slowly

  1049. but surely

  1050. and sure

  1051. enough

  1052. after enough

  1053. time

  1054. in my

  1055. previous

  1056. church

  1057. I was

  1058. six years

  1059. as the

  1060. youth

  1061. pastor

  1062. and kids

  1063. start to

  1064. figure out

  1065. what you're

  1066. doing

  1067. it takes

  1068. them surprisingly

  1069. long

  1070. but eventually

  1071. they figure

  1072. out that we

  1073. just been

  1074. doing the

  1075. same book

  1076. every week

  1077. that all we

  1078. keep looking

  1079. at is Jesus

  1080. week after

  1081. week after

  1082. week after

  1083. week and

  1084. they're like

  1085. can't we

  1086. look at

  1087. something

  1088. else

  1089. I need

  1090. something

  1091. a bit

  1092. meatier

  1093. than Jesus

  1094. and that

  1095. is the

  1096. most

  1097. concerning

  1098. thing

  1099. that any

  1100. Christian

  1101. can ever

  1102. say

  1103. but you'll

  1104. be amazed

  1105. at how

  1106. often

  1107. you hear

  1108. it and

  1109. not just

  1110. from

  1111. teenagers

  1112. as soon

  1113. as we

  1114. stop looking

  1115. at Jesus

  1116. we have

  1117. begun to

  1118. treat him

  1119. like something

  1120. we own

  1121. something we

  1122. deserve

  1123. something we're

  1124. entitled to

  1125. I've got him

  1126. now I'm ready

  1127. for the next

  1128. stuff

  1129. that is never

  1130. how following

  1131. Jesus works

  1132. the gospel

  1133. says you

  1134. deserve to

  1135. be punished

  1136. from God

  1137. you deserve

  1138. to be separated

  1139. from God

  1140. but because of

  1141. his love

  1142. because of

  1143. his compassion

  1144. you can

  1145. instead know

  1146. life and

  1147. hope and

  1148. a relationship

  1149. for all

  1150. eternity

  1151. do you

  1152. look at the

  1153. people around

  1154. you

  1155. based on

  1156. what they

  1157. do

  1158. how they

  1159. dress

  1160. what they

  1161. say

  1162. how they

  1163. treat you

  1164. or do you

  1165. look with

  1166. God's eyes

  1167. and see

  1168. only those

  1169. who know

  1170. God's grace

  1171. and those

  1172. who need

  1173. God's grace

  1174. God's grace

  1175. to you

  1176. is that you

  1177. might show

  1178. God's grace

  1179. to other

  1180. people

  1181. God's love

  1182. for you

  1183. is to release

  1184. you from

  1185. this sense

  1186. that you're

  1187. better than

  1188. anyone else

  1189. and instead

  1190. enable you to

  1191. realize that

  1192. his love is

  1193. so incredible

  1194. a gift

  1195. for you

  1196. that he's

  1197. going to let

  1198. you share

  1199. that incredible

  1200. gift with

  1201. other people

  1202. God's grace

  1203. doesn't even

  1204. stop when we

  1205. take the step

  1206. of following

  1207. him

  1208. when we

  1209. make the

  1210. decision to

  1211. call ourselves

  1212. a Christian

  1213. and completely

  1214. give our

  1215. lives to

  1216. his purpose

  1217. and his

  1218. glory

  1219. his grace

  1220. is new

  1221. each and

  1222. every day

  1223. as he

  1224. chooses to

  1225. guide us

  1226. step by

  1227. step through

  1228. situations

  1229. and relationships

  1230. as he

  1231. places those

  1232. in need of

  1233. God's grace

  1234. in our

  1235. path

  1236. that we

  1237. might love

  1238. them

  1239. and share

  1240. the gospel

  1241. with them

  1242. and speak

  1243. of the hope

  1244. that we

  1245. have in

  1246. Jesus

  1247. grace is

  1248. by definition

  1249. something that

  1250. we do not

  1251. deserve

  1252. we need to

  1253. remember that

  1254. grace exists

  1255. not to make

  1256. us feel

  1257. special

  1258. but to

  1259. show us

  1260. our glorious

  1261. loving

  1262. compassionate

  1263. and majestic

  1264. God

  1265. and grace

  1266. does not

  1267. exist to

  1268. just sit

  1269. here

  1270. grace exists

  1271. to flow

  1272. through you

  1273. the people

  1274. around you

  1275. that need

  1276. that grace

  1277. too

  1278. will you

  1279. start looking

  1280. with God's

  1281. eyes

  1282. and see

  1283. the people

  1284. who need

  1285. to know

  1286. what you

  1287. know

  1288. let's

  1289. pray

  1290. father

  1291. god

  1292. we want

  1293. to thank

  1294. and praise

  1295. you that

  1296. you love

  1297. us even

  1298. though we

  1299. don't deserve

  1300. it

  1301. we want

  1302. to thank

  1303. you that

  1304. in the

  1305. story of

  1306. Jonah

  1307. we are

  1308. reminded

  1309. that

  1310. you alone

  1311. have the

  1312. power to

  1313. forgive those

  1314. who are

  1315. unworthy

  1316. that you

  1317. alone have

  1318. the love

  1319. and compassion

  1320. to forgive

  1321. people who

  1322. are disobedient

  1323. and rebellious

  1324. that you

  1325. alone have

  1326. the patience

  1327. to bear

  1328. with consistently

  1329. disobedient

  1330. servants like

  1331. Jonah and

  1332. like us

  1333. father please

  1334. forgive us for

  1335. looking on other

  1336. people as less

  1337. deserving or less

  1338. worthy of your

  1339. grace

  1340. instead open our

  1341. eyes to see you

  1342. clearly

  1343. to see your

  1344. love

  1345. to see our

  1346. own sin

  1347. and to be

  1348. reminded constantly

  1349. that your love

  1350. holds us

  1351. that your love

  1352. humbles us

  1353. so that we

  1354. may be

  1355. exalted

  1356. with you

  1357. for all

  1358. eternity

  1359. father give

  1360. us eyes

  1361. to see those

  1362. that you

  1363. bring into

  1364. our lives

  1365. and across

  1366. our path

  1367. who don't

  1368. yet know

  1369. the hope

  1370. that we

  1371. have

  1372. give us

  1373. boldness

  1374. to speak

  1375. to them

  1376. give us

  1377. hearts

  1378. that love

  1379. them

  1380. even if

  1381. they are

  1382. our

  1383. enemies

  1384. even if

  1385. they hurt

  1386. us

  1387. help us

  1388. to trust

  1389. in the
