  1. Let me add my hello to you and my welcome to church.

  2. My voice is particularly bassy tonight and I apologise for that.

  3. I'll do my best not to cough over the microphone.

  4. We are beginning a new series tonight which is very exciting.

  5. It's exciting because of the topic.

  6. It's also daunting as a preacher.

  7. We're beginning a series called Knowing God

  8. which we are going to sit in for the next six weeks.

  9. And the goal of this series is, like it sounds,

  10. for us to really reflect on and soak in who God is,

  11. to look at his character, to try and understand him better.

  12. I want to recommend a couple of books to you right up front.

  13. We stole the title from this book, Knowing God by J.I. Packer

  14. which is a sensational read.

  15. We're not following the book necessarily

  16. but it is a great book for the sort of things

  17. that we're going to be looking at and wrestling with

  18. over the next couple of weeks.

  19. And this slightly smaller book by Bruce Ware

  20. called Father, Son and Holy Spirit

  21. I have found particularly helpful

  22. as I have wrestled with the doctrine of the Trinity

  23. which we are going to do over the next six weeks.

  24. It may feel daunting even to use that word Trinity

  25. as we get ready for six weeks of wrestling with it.

  26. And you may be sitting there thinking, why this?

  27. Surely there are many other series that we could look at.

  28. There might be really specific practical concerns

  29. that you would love us to wrestle with.

  30. Maybe your work-life balance.

  31. Maybe your finances.

  32. Maybe any number of other things.

  33. But we have chosen this

  34. and it's worth us asking the question why.

  35. Because there is a danger in a series like this.

  36. There is a danger when we wrestle with who God is

  37. when we wrestle with theology ultimately.

  38. That's what we're doing.

  39. There's the danger that we approach it

  40. simply with the goal that we will know stuff.

  41. That we will have more anecdotes about who God is.

  42. That we will have more ammunition to shout back at people

  43. when we get in arguments at work or uni or school.

  44. There is of course the danger that we are just doing this series

  45. so that we know more stuff about God.

  46. If that is our goal, if that is your goal,

  47. you are on a path to self-satisfaction,

  48. self-condemnation and self-righteousness

  49. which are all of no value.

  50. And so we need to be really careful about our motivations

  51. when we look at something like the character of God.

  52. We need to ensure that we're coming at this

  53. for more than just information.

  54. Theology is one of those nerdy words

  55. which sometimes immediately gives us a picture

  56. of just library, university, high pants,

  57. whatever other things you're thinking of.

  58. We need to ensure that that's not our goal for this series.

  59. It's not our goal ever when we open the Bible

  60. and particularly as we wrestle with knowing God,

  61. we don't just want to know more stuff about God at the end.

  62. If that's where we get to,

  63. we will have wasted six weeks of time together

  64. and six weeks of opening the Bible together.

  65. So theology, which is basically the study of God,

  66. is a gift.

  67. It is something in which we can find great encouragement.

  68. Let me read to you the words of a very, very great preacher,

  69. Charles Spurgeon, when beginning a sermon at the age of 20,

  70. which is slightly intimidating.

  71. But let me read you very briefly his introduction

  72. as he began wrestling with this topic specifically.

  73. He said that the most excellent study for expanding the soul

  74. is the science of Christ and him crucified

  75. and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity.

  76. Nothing will so enlarge the intellect,

  77. nothing so magnify the whole soul of a man

  78. as a devout, earnest, continued investigation

  79. of the great subject of the deity.

  80. And whilst humbling and expanding,

  81. this subject is eminently consolatory.

  82. Oh, there is, in contemplating Christ,

  83. a balm for every wound.

  84. In musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief.

  85. And in the influence of the Holy Ghost,

  86. there is a balsam for every sore.

  87. Would you lose your sorrow?

  88. Would you drown your cares?

  89. Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead's deepest sea.

  90. Be lost in his immensity,

  91. and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest,

  92. refreshed and invigorated.

  93. I know nothing which can so comfort the soul,

  94. so calm the swelling billows of sorrow and grief,

  95. so speak peace to the winds of trial

  96. as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead.

  97. He finds in his study of God

  98. comfort, encouragement, challenge, rebuke,

  99. healing, inspiration,

  100. and that is why we're going to spend some time

  101. wrestling with what is a difficult topic.

  102. I want to acknowledge that it'll be hard

  103. for the next six weeks,

  104. but it's worth it for those reasons

  105. that he has just articulated for us.

  106. Theology is a gift to us for our sake.

  107. It's not a pointless exercise.

  108. It is a gift that God has given us,

  109. but more than a gift, it is a necessity.

  110. According to Jesus himself,

  111. the eternal life that we have is knowing God.

  112. In John 17, he says it explicitly,

  113. this is eternal life that they may know you,

  114. the one true God.

  115. And so we must do theology,

  116. because that is the life that Jesus has died

  117. and risen again to give us.

  118. But as well as being a gift

  119. and as well as being a necessity,

  120. theology is, as Spurgeon has said,

  121. incredibly practical.

  122. You might think of other places you want to start,

  123. thinking about the character of God

  124. may appear abstract,

  125. but we need to remember that God

  126. is the ultimate reality in the universe.

  127. He is the defining true thing.

  128. He is the measure for all other things.

  129. He is the means and the necessary means

  130. by which we can look at other things,

  131. look at our finances,

  132. look at our work-life balance,

  133. look at whatever else it may be.

  134. It doesn't appear attractive at first.

  135. It's like when you're designing a house

  136. or going to look at a house that you want to buy.

  137. You don't start with the sewage system.

  138. You start with the veneer on the outside

  139. or what gardens you might have.

  140. The sewage system doesn't appear appealing or attractive,

  141. but a house is not functional

  142. if it doesn't have some sort of sewage system.

  143. Fairly soon, if you completely neglected

  144. to ensure that it was working,

  145. it would destroy the nice grass

  146. and the nice veneer and the nice carpets in your house.

  147. Now, of course, there's a problem there

  148. because we're saying that God is like sewage,

  149. but the point is it doesn't appear attractive

  150. in a setting like this with the Bible open

  151. to go straight to just thinking about who God is.

  152. We want to jump to the more interesting stuff,

  153. the stuff that really touches us immediately,

  154. like sexual purity,

  155. like generosity,

  156. like love.

  157. But unless we understand the character of God,

  158. we can't do those things

  159. because the character of God is central.

  160. He is the thing that defines the way we use our finances,

  161. the way we treat one another,

  162. the way we use our time.

  163. And so we will begin this year

  164. by wrestling with what appears abstract,

  165. with what might be intimidating,

  166. with what might be scary,

  167. and we will wrestle with our God who is Trinity.

  168. The passages that Tim read out for us before

  169. in the Philippians passage,

  170. Paul expresses a deep desire that he might know God.

  171. And I want to begin,

  172. you may think I've already begun,

  173. I want to begin by asking the question,

  174. what can we actually know about God?

  175. As Christians,

  176. we love to talk about having a relationship with God.

  177. That sounds fantastic,

  178. but what do we even mean by that?

  179. I mean,

  180. God is

  181. up there,

  182. isn't he?

  183. So when we describe a relationship with God,

  184. do we mean the same thing that we mean

  185. when we talk about relationships with one another?

  186. How do relationships work when you meet somebody?

  187. You initiate them by slowly getting to know them.

  188. The relationship only works if both parties

  189. are gradually giving more of themselves,

  190. and giving more access of themselves to the other person.

  191. And progressively,

  192. as you learn more of what things excite them,

  193. and what things upset them,

  194. and what things anger them,

  195. and you become invested in those things,

  196. and you become excited by what excites them,

  197. and saddened by what saddens them,

  198. and offended by what offends them,

  199. your relationship grows,

  200. and is strengthened,

  201. and you come closer together.

  202. I don't mean merely romantic relationships.

  203. This might be just a friend that you meet,

  204. this might be an acquaintance,

  205. this could even be a family member.

  206. I am enjoying getting to know my son at the moment.

  207. We've only had him for 10 months,

  208. and progressively,

  209. as he discovers more of who he is,

  210. he's able to disclose more of who he is

  211. to me and Sal as well.

  212. And so as we get to know him,

  213. he gets to know more of us,

  214. and the relationship grows.

  215. For a relationship,

  216. there needs to be some sort of access given.

  217. And when there's a superior in the relationship,

  218. the access is entirely one directional.

  219. Imagine for a second

  220. that you have won some sort of lottery,

  221. and you are given the opportunity to meet the queen.

  222. And not just that meet the queen

  223. where you stand in a queue,

  224. shake the hand,

  225. or curtsy,

  226. or whatever,

  227. and then she moves on

  228. and pays no attention to you,

  229. but meet the queen

  230. in a way where you get to sit down with her,

  231. have some face time,

  232. just you and her.

  233. And initially,

  234. you sit down,

  235. and if she was to insist

  236. that you referred to her as her majesty,

  237. if she was to limit the discussion

  238. to the weather,

  239. or the current affairs that were going on,

  240. you might walk away a little bit disappointed,

  241. because even though you had met her,

  242. and you had spoken to her,

  243. and you knew her name,

  244. you probably wouldn't say

  245. you had a relationship with her.

  246. But if she was to invite you in,

  247. and as you sat down,

  248. she said,

  249. please call me Liz.

  250. And she began to give you a little bit more access

  251. to who she is.

  252. She began to share her frustration

  253. at the comical version of a family that she has.

  254. She began to talk about and discuss

  255. the things that have been difficult in her lifetime.

  256. She began to share some of her personal experiences.

  257. She began to let you in

  258. to see who she is

  259. and what matters to her.

  260. Only then

  261. would you begin to feel like

  262. there was some sort of relationship.

  263. And can you see that

  264. you can only have a relationship

  265. in so much as she

  266. reveals herself to you?

  267. It's entirely her prerogative.

  268. As the queen,

  269. she could just ring her secret service

  270. and probably find out

  271. everything there is to know about you.

  272. But for you to know her,

  273. she needs to make a decision

  274. that she will show herself to you.

  275. Only what is revealed can be known.

  276. And the same is true of us and God.

  277. There is a relationship between us and God,

  278. but it's not a relationship between equals.

  279. Our relationship with God is limited

  280. to what He shows us of Himself.

  281. And so really quickly,

  282. I want to have a look at how He shows us Himself.

  283. The Bible tells us in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  284. that in nature,

  285. we get a bit of a glimpse into God.

  286. In nature,

  287. we begin to see that God is powerful and immense.

  288. We get to see that God is sovereign,

  289. that God is in control,

  290. that God looks after and sustains

  291. even the little things,

  292. that God can control the storms

  293. and the seasons

  294. and the days

  295. and the nights

  296. and the years

  297. and the generations.

  298. But it's not until we get to Jesus

  299. that we begin to see

  300. some serious revealing,

  301. some serious revelation.

  302. There is a verse at the beginning

  303. of the book of Hebrews.

  304. Sorry,

  305. I should have bookmarked lots of these,

  306. but I'll flick around.

  307. There is a verse at the very beginning of Hebrews

  308. in Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  309. which says this,

  310. In the past,

  311. God spoke to our forefathers

  312. through the prophets

  313. at many times

  314. and in various ways,

  315. but in these last days

  316. He has spoken to us

  317. by His Son

  318. whom He appointed

  319. heir of all things

  320. and through whom

  321. He made the universe.

  322. God gives Jesus

  323. so that we can see Him,

  324. so that we can get

  325. a fuller picture of Him.

  326. Colossians 1

  327. talks about Jesus

  328. being the exact representation

  329. of the Father in heaven,

  330. that the point of Jesus arriving,

  331. the point of Jesus coming to earth

  332. is so that we can see

  333. what bits of God

  334. He wants us to see,

  335. so that there will be

  336. something on show

  337. that we can begin

  338. to relate to.

  339. He already knows us,

  340. He made us,

  341. He's the Creator,

  342. but the bit that we relate with

  343. is the bit that God

  344. has shown us

  345. and the bit that He has shown us

  346. is His Son, Jesus.

  347. But the amazing good thing

  348. about our God,

  349. even though He is far above us,

  350. even though He is far beyond us,

  351. is that He actually wants

  352. to be known.

  353. Sometimes there is this inkling

  354. that maybe God is happier,

  355. separate from us,

  356. that maybe God kind of humors us

  357. by just dangling a carrot,

  358. but repeatedly throughout Scripture,

  359. God shows us that His desire

  360. is for people,

  361. humans,

  362. to know Him.

  363. In Jeremiah chapter 31,

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  364. God makes a covenant

  365. with His people.

  366. Jeremiah 31, 33 says this,

  367. This is the covenant

  368. I will make with the house of Israel.

  369. After that time,

  370. declares the Lord,

  371. I will put my law in their minds

  372. and write it on their hearts.

  373. I will be their God

  374. and they will be my people.

  375. No longer will a man

  376. teach his neighbor

  377. or a man his brother

  378. saying,

  379. Know the Lord,

  380. because they will all know me

  381. from the least of them

  382. to the greatest,

  383. declares the Lord.

  384. God's plan from the beginning

  385. was that people would know Him.

  386. People have been missing it

  387. and rejecting it,

  388. but even from way back here

  389. before Jesus,

  390. God's agenda was

  391. that all people would know Him,

  392. not know about Him,

  393. not have some idea who He is,

  394. not be able to spell His name,

  395. but have a relationship with Him.

  396. We flick forward

  397. into the New Testament,

  398. into John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  399. and this time we have Jesus praying.

  400. John 17 is a chapter

  401. we're probably going to go back

  402. to a couple of times

  403. over the next few weeks,

  404. but in John 17 and verse 6,

  405. Jesus says this,

  406. I have revealed you,

  407. talking to His Father in heaven,

  408. to those whom you gave me

  409. out of the world.

  410. The job that Jesus was given

  411. by God

  412. was to reveal God,

  413. to show God,

  414. and so everything He does on earth

  415. is to show us

  416. the God of heaven

  417. so that we might know Him.

  418. The relationship

  419. is not to be just information,

  420. the relationship is to be

  421. information and response.

  422. It's to be head and heart

  423. and hands and feet

  424. and whole of life.

  425. God shows us who He is

  426. that that might shape

  427. who we are

  428. and that that might shape

  429. the lives that we live.

  430. The end point that we see

  431. in Scripture

  432. is every tongue

  433. confessing that Jesus is Lord,

  434. is every knee bowing

  435. because finally they know

  436. who God is,

  437. because finally they are

  438. confronted with His majesty.

  439. God is not hiding,

  440. God's goal is not to be

  441. hard to find,

  442. His goal is that people

  443. would know Him.

  444. So what can we know of God?

  445. We can know what He has revealed

  446. and what has He revealed?

  447. He has revealed Himself

  448. in His Son,

  449. He has revealed Himself

  450. in His creation

  451. and for us He has compiled

  452. those things in Scripture

  453. so that even thousands of years

  454. after Jesus' life,

  455. death and resurrection

  456. we still can meet God.

  457. We can still have Him speak to us.

  458. Our relationship with God

  459. is not exactly like

  460. our other relationships.

  461. relationships.

  462. We can't see God

  463. but we can have Him

  464. speak to us every day.

  465. We can have Him show us

  466. more of His character

  467. through the people around us.

  468. We can have a relationship

  469. with Him.

  470. One thing that we're going

  471. to wrestle with in particular

  472. over the next few weeks

  473. is that God has revealed Himself

  474. as Trinity.

  475. He hasn't used the word

  476. Trinity

  477. and the word is sometimes

  478. something that we trip over

  479. but He has revealed Himself

  480. as a God who is three

  481. and a God who is one.

  482. This is the bit

  483. where we start to get concerned,

  484. our heads start to spin,

  485. we start to get nervous

  486. but the testimony of the Bible

  487. is that God is Father,

  488. God is Son

  489. and God is Holy Spirit.

  490. I want to put it out there

  491. straight away.

  492. this is a truth

  493. that is incomprehensible.

  494. This is a truth

  495. that is beyond us

  496. but it's still true

  497. which means it still matters

  498. and the reason it matters

  499. is because

  500. we can only have a relationship

  501. with what God has revealed to us

  502. and God has revealed to us

  503. that He is Trinity.

  504. So if we're going to have

  505. a relationship with God,

  506. it needs to be

  507. with the God

  508. who is Trinity.

  509. Over the next few weeks

  510. you're going to find

  511. that I repeat myself a lot.

  512. I'm not doing it by accident

  513. hopefully.

  514. There are things

  515. that Scripture testifies to

  516. over and over again.

  517. We will go to verse

  518. after verse

  519. that tells us

  520. that there is one God

  521. and one God alone

  522. and so I will keep telling you that.

  523. We will go to verses

  524. that tell us

  525. that Jesus is God,

  526. that the Spirit is God,

  527. that the Father is God

  528. over and over again

  529. because that is what Scripture tells us.

  530. We are still then standing

  531. in that awkward position

  532. of saying there's one

  533. but there's three

  534. but there's one

  535. but there's three

  536. but we need to be clear

  537. Scripture keeps saying them

  538. so they're true.

  539. What we want to wrestle with,

  540. what do we do with that fact?

  541. That there is a oneness in God,

  542. a unity that cannot be broken,

  543. that cannot be separated

  544. but there is also a distinction,

  545. there is a threeness in God.

  546. So again,

  547. what do we do with that?

  548. Well,

  549. it's okay for us to acknowledge

  550. that it's hard to understand.

  551. We need to remember

  552. that we are trying to

  553. contain a God

  554. who is infinite,

  555. a God who is outside

  556. of this apparently infinite galaxy

  557. that we live in.

  558. He created it

  559. and yet we're trying to collect

  560. all of that power

  561. and majesty

  562. and condense it

  563. into our little brains.

  564. That's never going to work.

  565. I was trying to think

  566. of an illustration

  567. to show us

  568. the difference

  569. between something finite,

  570. trying to understand

  571. something that's infinite

  572. and I couldn't come up

  573. with anything

  574. because there is nothing

  575. that is that ridiculous

  576. and that far apart.

  577. Seriously,

  578. I was asking around

  579. and I was just looking

  580. for something that showed

  581. that the immense gap

  582. between finite and infinite

  583. and finite being contained

  584. and infinite being uncontained

  585. and that trying to understand.

  586. You can't do it

  587. because it is just

  588. so overwhelmingly unrealistic

  589. but yet that is what

  590. we're trying to wrestle

  591. with right now.

  592. And that might be frustrating

  593. and discouraging

  594. but just be reminded

  595. that God wants to be known.

  596. That's His goal

  597. and so He will give us

  598. what we need

  599. to know Him.

  600. He will give us enough

  601. that we can understand

  602. who He is

  603. and that we can have

  604. a relationship with Him.

  605. And so to this point

  606. in terms of what we can know

  607. about God

  608. and the relationship

  609. that we can have

  610. all I want to say

  611. for tonight is

  612. that God has revealed Himself

  613. in nature,

  614. in His Son,

  615. in Scripture

  616. and that revelation is

  617. that God is triune.

  618. that God is one

  619. and God is three

  620. and that's the God

  621. that we are in

  622. a relationship with.

  623. The testimony

  624. of 1 Corinthians 13

  625. which Tim read out,

  626. you might have been wondering

  627. why are we reading

  628. this wedding passage?

  629. If you've got it

  630. in front of you,

  631. have a look

  632. at 1 Corinthians 13.

  633. Verse 9,

  634. We know in part

  635. and we prophesy in part

  636. but when perfection comes

  637. the imperfect disappears.

  638. Now I want to go

  639. down to verse 12.

  640. Now we see

  641. but a poor reflection

  642. as in a mirror.

  643. Then we shall see

  644. face to face.

  645. Now I know in part.

  646. Then I shall know fully

  647. even as I am fully known.

  648. The barrier for us now

  649. is not just

  650. our finiteness

  651. and God's infinity.

  652. The barrier for us now

  653. is the fact

  654. that we are imperfect

  655. and He is perfect.

  656. It is complex.

  657. There's no denying it.

  658. It is difficult.

  659. There's no denying it

  660. but it is true

  661. and the barrier for us

  662. to this truth

  663. is the fact

  664. that we are sinful people

  665. and that is why again

  666. this relationship

  667. we have with God

  668. starts with Him

  669. revealing Himself

  670. not us finding Him.

  671. Not us grasping

  672. who He is.

  673. Not us studying

  674. to a point

  675. where suddenly

  676. we can understand it.

  677. It's necessarily

  678. His initiative

  679. to choose

  680. to reveal to us

  681. and to enable us

  682. to understand

  683. enough of Him

  684. that we might be shaped by it

  685. and that it might change us.

  686. Now because of

  687. the fun that we are going to have

  688. wrestling with the Trinity

  689. for the next six weeks

  690. I wanted to flag for you

  691. that in week five

  692. I know it sounds like

  693. a long way away

  694. in week five

  695. we are actually going to

  696. give some time

  697. in our service

  698. for questions.

  699. Now you might be

  700. a little bit shy

  701. about asking questions

  702. in the service

  703. at any point

  704. between now and then

  705. you can email me a question.

  706. I won't name you

  707. I won't

  708. it would be anonymous

  709. that's fine

  710. but chances are

  711. if you're wrestling with it

  712. there's other people as well

  713. so please be brave enough

  714. to throw it up there

  715. and it will bless all of us

  716. to wrestle with it.

  717. I want to tell you

  718. in advance

  719. I won't have all the answers

  720. but it will be good for us

  721. to see what things

  722. that we are grasping

  723. and what things

  724. we're missing as well together

  725. so that's going to be

  726. in a few weeks.

  727. The Trinity

  728. is a stumbling block

  729. for some of us

  730. because for some of us

  731. we have had different illustrations

  732. thrown at us

  733. over the years

  734. that can be less than helpful.

  735. Well intentioned

  736. but not necessarily helpful.

  737. The water one

  738. is the first one

  739. that came to mind.

  740. We think of the Trinity

  741. as water, steam and ice.

  742. H2O has its three forms.

  743. It's a good idea

  744. there is threeness

  745. but there's not oneness

  746. in the water, steam and ice

  747. because God is one

  748. and three at the same time

  749. whereas water can be water,

  750. ice or steam.

  751. Now someone very smart

  752. in our congregation

  753. has apparently pointed out

  754. to me that it is

  755. actually possible

  756. for water to be the three

  757. at the same time

  758. but I've never heard

  759. that version

  760. of the illustration

  761. with God

  762. so when I was told

  763. the illustration

  764. it was unhelpful.

  765. The point is

  766. the reason the Trinity

  767. can be confusing

  768. is as soon as somebody

  769. gives you something

  770. to help you understand it

  771. you suddenly realise

  772. that that's completely inadequate

  773. and it's actually distracting

  774. and that's kind of encouraging.

  775. If God could be explained

  776. in water, steam and ice

  777. I'd be kind of disappointed.

  778. I don't know

  779. how much confidence

  780. I could have in this

  781. water, steam and ice God

  782. to save me from my sins

  783. and give me eternal life.

  784. It is hard.

  785. It is frustrating.

  786. But the majesty of God

  787. is an encouragement.

  788. It's who He is.

  789. He's not going to dumb it down for us.

  790. He's giving us

  791. enough of Himself

  792. that we might know Him.

  793. And then that verse

  794. in 1 Corinthians 13

  795. Now I know in part

  796. then I shall know fully

  797. even as I am fully known.

  798. Once we have been

  799. fully transformed

  800. once Jesus has come back

  801. then we will get to

  802. grasp and bask in

  803. and rejoice in

  804. and enjoy

  805. God in His fullness.

  806. Without the blinkers

  807. required to stop us

  808. from becoming overwhelmed

  809. we will get God fully

  810. when He finally comes back.

  811. Trinity is who God is

  812. and to reject it

  813. or to avoid it

  814. because it's difficult

  815. is to reject

  816. or avoid God.

  817. Because this is Him.

  818. There is no other version.

  819. To have a different God

  820. than this

  821. is to have a God

  822. that you've made up.

  823. A God who is not God at all.

  824. And so it's important

  825. that we wrestle with this

  826. and so we will.

  827. And we probably will continue to

  828. for many more years

  829. in our lives.

  830. In Matthew 28

  831. the disciples are instructed

  832. to go into all the nations

  833. baptizing into the name

  834. of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  835. One name.

  836. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  837. The God we worship

  838. His name is

  839. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  840. The God who you follow

  841. His name is

  842. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  843. And so

  844. we are going to wrestle with

  845. we are going to ask God

  846. to give us eyes to see

  847. hearts to understand

  848. that we might be shaped

  849. by who He is

  850. and by His character.

  851. But lastly

  852. tonight was

  853. looking at

  854. what we can know

  855. about God

  856. the relationship

  857. that we can have

  858. and it's kind of

  859. introductory

  860. because we're going to

  861. start looking

  862. at each member

  863. of the Trinity

  864. going forward

  865. but I wanted to

  866. before we finish

  867. quickly wrestle with

  868. what it means

  869. to be known by God

  870. because a relationship

  871. is two way.

  872. God has

  873. the seat

  874. of authority

  875. He's the one

  876. who initiates

  877. He's the one

  878. who reveals

  879. but it is

  880. a relationship

  881. where we know Him

  882. and He knows us.

  883. So what does that mean?

  884. What's so unique

  885. about that?

  886. Because on one level

  887. you could say

  888. God knows everyone

  889. God made everything

  890. God made everyone

  891. Psalm 139

  892. testifies that God

  893. knits us together

  894. in our mother's womb

  895. that He knows

  896. every step

  897. before we take it

  898. and so what do we mean

  899. when we talk about

  900. being known by God

  901. in a relationship

  902. with Him?

  903. Let me take you

  904. to two examples

  905. really quickly

  906. if you're fast

  907. jumping through

  908. your Bible

  909. flick back to

  910. Exodus 33

  911. if not

  912. you can just

  913. listen in

  914. you might be

  915. faster than me

  916. anyway to be honest

  917. with you

  918. Exodus 33

  919. this is an incident

  920. involving Moses

  921. talking to God

  922. and in Exodus 33

  923. beginning at

  924. verse 12

  925. Moses said to the

  926. Lord

  927. you have been

  928. telling me

  929. lead these people

  930. but you have not

  931. let me know

  932. whom you will

  933. send with me

  934. you have said

  935. this is quoting God

  936. I know you

  937. by name

  938. and you have

  939. found favour

  940. with me

  941. if you're

  942. pleased with me

  943. teach me

  944. your ways

  945. so I may

  946. know you

  947. and continue

  948. to find favour

  949. with you

  950. remember that

  951. this nation

  952. is your people

  953. the Lord replied

  954. my presence

  955. will go with you

  956. and I will

  957. give you rest

  958. then Moses

  959. said to him

  960. if your presence

  961. does not go

  962. with us

  963. do not send

  964. us up from here

  965. how will anyone

  966. know that you

  967. are pleased

  968. with me

  969. and with your

  970. people

  971. unless you go

  972. with us

  973. what else

  974. will distinguish

  975. me and your

  976. people from

  977. all the other

  978. people on the

  979. face of the

  980. earth

  981. he's really

  982. keeping it

  983. verse 17

  984. and the Lord

  985. said to Moses

  986. I will do

  987. the very thing

  988. you have asked

  989. because I am

  990. pleased with you

  991. and I know

  992. you by name

  993. God's knowing

  994. of Moses

  995. here is not

  996. simply a

  997. knowledge

  998. about

  999. it's not

  1000. simply a

  1001. knowledge of

  1002. here God's

  1003. knowing of

  1004. Moses

  1005. is directly

  1006. connected to

  1007. God's saving

  1008. work in

  1009. Moses

  1010. circumstance

  1011. God's saving

  1012. work in

  1013. Israel's

  1014. history

  1015. God

  1016. knowing

  1017. Moses

  1018. is directly

  1019. connected

  1020. with God

  1021. leading

  1022. Israel

  1023. out of

  1024. Egypt

  1025. of his

  1026. presence

  1027. going

  1028. with them

  1029. and continuing

  1030. to look

  1031. after them

  1032. really quickly

  1033. in the New

  1034. Testament

  1035. just to show

  1036. you that this

  1037. isn't just the

  1038. Old Testament

  1039. before we get

  1040. to Jesus

  1041. John 10

    John 10:14

  1042. verse 14

  1043. Jesus says

  1044. I am the

  1045. good shepherd

  1046. I know

  1047. my sheep

  1048. and my

  1049. sheep know

  1050. me

  1051. just as

  1052. the Father

  1053. knows me

  1054. and I

  1055. know the

  1056. Father

  1057. and I

  1058. lay down

  1059. my life

  1060. for the

  1061. sheep

  1062. I know

  1063. my sheep

  1064. and my

  1065. sheep know

  1066. me

  1067. there's the

  1068. two-way

  1069. relationship

  1070. that God

  1071. has designed

  1072. for us

  1073. and then at

  1074. the end

  1075. there I

  1076. lay down

  1077. my life

  1078. for the

  1079. sheep

  1080. Jesus does

  1081. not lay

  1082. down his

  1083. life for

  1084. the sheep

  1085. because the

  1086. sheep know

  1087. him

  1088. it's his

  1089. knowledge of

  1090. the sheep

  1091. that moves

  1092. him to lay

  1093. down his

  1094. life

  1095. God's

  1096. knowing of

  1097. us

  1098. God's

  1099. knowledge

  1100. of us

  1101. God's

  1102. side of

  1103. the

  1104. relationship

  1105. is directly

  1106. connected to

  1107. his saving

  1108. mercy in

  1109. our lives

  1110. this is an

  1111. amazing blessing

  1112. because as you

  1113. wrestle with

  1114. things like

  1115. theology and

  1116. difficult concepts

  1117. like the

  1118. trinity

  1119. it's easy to

  1120. feel inferior

  1121. to maybe people

  1122. who have

  1123. read more

  1124. than you

  1125. or have

  1126. studied more

  1127. than you

  1128. or know

  1129. more than

  1130. you or

  1131. can use

  1132. bigger words

  1133. than you

  1134. but here

  1135. we are

  1136. seeing

  1137. that the

  1138. thing that

  1139. saves you

  1140. is not

  1141. your

  1142. knowledge

  1143. knowledge

  1144. is not

  1145. your level

  1146. of understanding

  1147. it's God's

  1148. knowledge

  1149. of you

  1150. it's God's

  1151. knowing of

  1152. you

  1153. it's God's

  1154. choosing of

  1155. you

  1156. it's God's

  1157. loving of

  1158. you

  1159. and so that

  1160. means that as

  1161. we begin this

  1162. series we can

  1163. take away that

  1164. burden of I

  1165. need to reach a

  1166. point of

  1167. knowing a point

  1168. of understanding

  1169. a point of

  1170. knowledge of

  1171. this trinity

  1172. thing to

  1173. really be a

  1174. Christian

  1175. what God

  1176. is saying

  1177. is I

  1178. know you

  1179. I love

  1180. you

  1181. I know

  1182. you inside

  1183. out and

  1184. I've still

  1185. chosen to

  1186. love you

  1187. even though

  1188. I know

  1189. everything about

  1190. you there is

  1191. nothing that

  1192. could stop me

  1193. from loving

  1194. you and so

  1195. your knowledge

  1196. of him is

  1197. just a gift

  1198. that he has

  1199. given you

  1200. the reason it

  1201. is worth

  1202. wrestling with

  1203. things like the

  1204. trinity is

  1205. because in the

  1206. character of

  1207. God just like

  1208. Spurgeon encourages

  1209. us and like

  1210. scripture shows us

  1211. we find comfort

  1212. when we're alone

  1213. we find strength

  1214. when we are weak

  1215. we find healing

  1216. when we are sick

  1217. our knowing of

  1218. God is a gift

  1219. because he saved

  1220. us not something

  1221. that in some way

  1222. could earn his

  1223. saving for us

  1224. it matters that

  1225. we wrestle with

  1226. the character of

  1227. the God that we

  1228. follow and serve

  1229. because he is the

  1230. one who will

  1231. shape us to live

  1232. life the way he

  1233. has designed it

  1234. it's God's

  1235. knowledge that

  1236. saves us

  1237. and our

  1238. knowledge of

  1239. God is merely

  1240. a gift for

  1241. our joy

  1242. for our sake

  1243. that we might

  1244. know the God

  1245. who is love

  1246. that we might

  1247. know the God

  1248. who is hope

  1249. that we might

  1250. know the God

  1251. who is so far

  1252. above and beyond

  1253. our understanding

  1254. that sometimes it

  1255. hurts our head

  1256. to think about

  1257. that is God's

  1258. gift to give

  1259. us access to

  1260. the greatest

  1261. thing that there

  1262. is himself

  1263. as we move

  1264. into this series

  1265. over the next

  1266. few weeks I

  1267. want to encourage

  1268. you that in the

  1269. times where maybe

  1270. you're feeling a

  1271. little bit

  1272. overwhelmed or

  1273. discouraged please

  1274. persevere

  1275. please put up your

  1276. hand if you've got

  1277. questions please let

  1278. us know if you're

  1279. struggling to

  1280. understand things

  1281. because the point

  1282. of wrestling with

  1283. who God is is

  1284. not to know

  1285. stuff is not to

  1286. show off but is

  1287. that all of us

  1288. might have our

  1289. lives changed

  1290. is that all of

  1291. us might as we

  1292. get to know God

  1293. better love him

  1294. more and feel

  1295. loved by him

  1296. more might grasp

  1297. more of just the

  1298. lengths that he

  1299. went to just how

1300. amazing it is that a

1301. God who is one and

  1302. three at the same

  1303. time would choose to

  1304. become human for us

1305. the goal is that he

  1306. gets glory and that

  1307. we progressively become

  1308. more like his son

1309. I'm going to pray for

1310. us and then in just a

  1311. second Danny's going to

  1312. continue for us

  1313. Father God we

  1314. acknowledge that there

  1315. are aspects of theology

1316. and there are aspects of

  1317. studying you and your

  1318. character that are

  1319. intimidating and

  1320. maybe appear

  1321. abstract and

  1322. potentially even

  1323. unhelpful but God

  1324. give us the patience

  1325. and the perseverance to

  1326. push through in those

  1327. moments and to

  1328. recognize that there is

  1329. nothing better than

  1330. knowing you

  1331. Lord keep us from

  1332. settling for a less

  1333. version of you than

1334. the one that you have

  1335. revealed in scripture

  1336. and in your son

1337. Lord as we come up

  1338. against things that we

  1339. don't understand give us

  1340. the humility to

  1341. acknowledge it and to

  1342. ask for your help

1343. God and I pray that the

1344. result of looking at you

1345. as Father Son and Holy

1346. Spirit will be that we

1347. are more confident in the

  1348. forgiveness you have for

1349. us more confident in the

1350. love that you have worked

1351. in Jesus and more excited

1352. to love and serve you with

1353. every minute that you give

1354. us Father we thank you for

1355. your word and pray that by

1356. it you might show us

  1357. yourself more clearly and

1358. might change and shape us

1359. that we might shine you

  1360. into a world that doesn't

  1361. know you

  1362. Amen

  1363. have a selfish dream

  1364. all right

  1365. って awesome
