  1. I have never used this word about myself ever before,

  2. but as I prepared this message, I thought I can do this.

  3. I was raised as a theist, or more specifically,

  4. I was raised as a monotheist.

  5. I was raised to believe in one God,

  6. to pray prayers at night that were addressed as dear God,

  7. sent to Sunday school where Jesus was a bit of a mystery,

  8. important but not as important as God, the man.

  9. And I think I had a mindset of,

  10. why would you talk to this number two when you could talk to the main man?

  11. And if I was raised, or had been raised in a Muslim family,

  12. I would have been taught similar things about God.

  13. When I was confirmed at 14, I think I had a sincerity of heart,

  14. I wanted to honour God, but Jesus still made no specific sense.

  15. So when God shone his light and broke into my heart at 18 years of age,

  16. the most dramatic change in my thinking was twofold.

  17. God showed me that I deserved to be judged by him.

  18. I understood for the first time that I really didn't deserve special favours.

  19. I was immediately afraid.

  20. And the second thing he did was show me that Jesus had stood in my place,

  21. that he had taken the judgment that I deserved,

  22. and I was thrilled and thankful for the mercy of the Lord Jesus,

  23. and he became the new centre of my world.

  24. Knowing Jesus was the beginning of a journey to know his Father,

  25. the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  26. It's a journey which is ongoing, and it will not stop this side of heaven.

  27. And so as I live with Jesus Christ as my Lord,

  28. I am still learning about the sheer goodness and supremacy

  29. and love and power and provision of his most magnificent Father.

  30. Really interesting this morning to hear the job description of a dad you came up with.

  31. I wish I'd had that in mind when I was preparing this message,

  32. because it reflects the nature of God himself and what we know of him.

  33. But the big point that I'm making this morning,

  34. if you walk away with nothing else, I want you walk away with this,

  35. that the only way to know the true God and Father,

  36. the only way to know the true God and Father,

  37. is through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  38. In John 14, Jesus is talking about returning to his Father's house in heaven.

  39. And Thomas says to him, Lord, we don't know the way,

  40. we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?

  41. And Jesus replies, I am the way and the truth and the life.

  42. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  43. I mean, this day and age,

  44. that is one of Christianity's most offensive claims to a lot of people.

  45. The only way that God the Father can be known

  46. is through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  47. and any other attempt is futile and false.

  48. And we make this claim confidently

  49. because it is straight from the mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  50. Philip says to Jesus in John 14, verse 8,

    John 14:8

  51. Lord, show us the Father,

  52. and that will be enough for us.

  53. And Jesus replied,

  54. Don't you know me, Philip?

  55. Anyone who has seen me

  56. has seen the Father.

  57. The Lord Jesus Christ

  58. is the one who reveals God the Father.

  59. The only way to know the true God and Father

  60. is through his Son,

  61. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  63. says something similar.

  64. Jesus says,

  65. I praise you, Father,

  66. Lord of heaven and earth,

  67. because you have hidden these things

  68. from the wise and learned

  69. and revealed them to little children.

  70. Yes, Father,

  71. for this was your good pleasure.

  72. All things have been committed to me by my Father.

  73. No one knows the Son

  74. except the Father,

  75. and no one knows the Father

  76. except the Son

  77. and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  78. We do not come to know God the Father

  79. by the power of our own intellect.

  80. We know him

  81. because of the gracious gift of his Son.

  82. The only way to know the true God and Father

  83. is through his Son,

  84. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  85. So this morning is the second of two messages

  86. that focus on the God of the Bible.

  87. The second of two messages,

  88. we're doing more than two messages.

  89. Who he is,

  90. how he's revealed himself.

  91. I said last week

  92. that we have to keep a fair bit of humility

  93. when trying to know God

  94. and describe God

  95. and talk about God.

  96. We don't know everything.

  97. We only know as much about God

  98. as he chooses to reveal about himself,

  99. and to go any further

  100. is to move into the realm of speculation and error.

  101. I want to put a few more pegs in the ground today

  102. which focus on God revealing himself to us as Father.

  103. We're exploring the doctrine of the Trinity.

  104. It's a word that the early church used to describe

  105. how God reveals himself as three persons,

  106. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  107. And we've been saying,

  108. and we'll say again and again throughout this series,

  109. that the Scriptures clearly teach

  110. the Father is God,

  111. the Son is God,

  112. the Holy Spirit is God.

  113. But they also clearly teach

  114. the Son is not the Father,

  115. the Father is not the Spirit,

  116. and the Spirit is not the Son.

  117. Describing God is in some sense

  118. like trying to describe the indescribable.

  119. Sometimes you have to hold to truth

  120. that seems illogical and contradictory.

  121. We can only describe what we see.

  122. We do not see the whole picture.

  123. Despite all the confidence

  124. that scientists sometimes speak with,

  125. they're like that.

  126. And what they teach us about light,

  127. they tell us that it,

  128. when they teach us about light,

  129. they'll tell us that it displays

  130. the form and behaviour of waves.

  131. But they'll also teach us

  132. that light displays the form

  133. and behaviour of particles.

  134. Two different substances

  135. doesn't easily fit logic,

  136. but it is what it is.

  137. I was wonderfully surprised

  138. as I prepared this message

  139. and actually quite excited.

  140. I did a search

  141. of the whole of the Bible

  142. with my concordance

  143. for the number of times

  144. or the places

  145. where the word Father is used.

  146. And you push the button

  147. on your computer

  148. and you get more than

  149. a thousand references.

  150. And when you get rid

  151. of all the human references,

  152. such as Abraham was the father of Isaac

  153. and he was the father of Jacob

  154. and all that sort of reference

  155. in the Bible,

  156. you get a much shorter list.

  157. And you discover,

  158. or I saw for the first time,

  159. that there are very few references

  160. to God as Father

  161. in the Old Testament.

  162. Very few.

  163. And most of them

  164. are associated

  165. with God's relationship

  166. to King David

  167. and the promises

  168. that he makes to him.

  169. So probably the high point

  170. of David's reign

  171. is in 2 Samuel chapter 7

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  172. when God promises

  173. to build a dynasty from him.

  174. And it says,

  175. The Lord declares to you

  176. that the Lord himself

  177. will establish a house for you

  178. when your days are over

  179. and you rest with your fathers.

  180. I will raise up your offspring

  181. to succeed you

  182. who will come from your own body.

  183. And I will establish his kingdom.

  184. And he is the one

  185. who will build a house for my name.

  186. And I will establish

  187. the throne of his kingdom forever.

  188. I will be his father

  189. and he will be my son.

  190. And when he does wrong,

  191. I will punish him

  192. with the rod of men

  193. and with floggings inflicted by men.

  194. But my love

  195. will never be taken away from him

  196. as I took it away from Saul,

  197. whom I removed from before you.

  198. Your house and your kingdom

  199. will endure forever before me

  200. and your throne

  201. will be established forever.

  202. Psalm 2 carries the same idea

  203. or similar ideas.

  204. He says,

  205. I have installed my king

  206. on Zion,

  207. my holy hill.

  208. I will proclaim

  209. the decree of the Lord.

  210. He said to me,

  211. You are my son.

  212. Today,

  213. I have become your father.

  214. Ask of me

  215. and I will make the nations

  216. your inheritance,

  217. the ends of the earth

  218. your possession.

  219. And it's there as well

  220. in Isaiah.

  221. It's in a reading

  222. that we read at Christmas

  223. all the time.

  224. For unto us

  225. a child is born,

  226. to us a son is given,

  227. and the government

  228. will be on his shoulders

  229. and he will be called

  230. Wonderful Counselor,

  231. Mighty God,

  232. Everlasting Father,

  233. Prince of Peace.

  234. Of the increase

  235. of his government

  236. and peace

  237. there will be no end

  238. and he will reign

  239. on David's throne

  240. and over his kingdom,

  241. establishing

  242. and upholding it

  243. with justice

  244. and righteousness

  245. from that time on forever.

  246. And the zeal

  247. of the Lord Almighty

  248. will accomplish this.

  249. It's not as clear

  250. but amongst

  251. his other titles

  252. this son

  253. will also be known

  254. as Mighty God

  255. and Everlasting Father.

  256. Those three passages

  257. are passages

  258. which are all looking

  259. towards a future day,

  260. a future king,

  261. a future son

  262. who will reign

  263. on behalf of his father.

  264. And the Old Testament

  265. begins to anticipate

  266. what will be revealed

  267. with the coming

  268. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  269. So I want you to see

  270. that in some ways

  271. our understanding

  272. of God as father

  273. grows

  274. as the passages

  275. of the Bible unfold

  276. and as God's king

  277. is revealed.

  278. It's not always there

  279. to be seen explicitly.

  280. It becomes

  281. much more explicit

  282. as you move

  283. through the Bible

  284. and into the New Testament.

  285. So when you get

  286. to Matthew chapter 3

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  287. that God and Father

  288. speaks at the baptism

  289. of his son

  290. and he says,

  291. this is my son

  292. whom I love

  293. and in him

  294. I am well pleased.

  295. You discover

  296. as you read

  297. the Gospels

  298. that the normal way

  299. for Jesus

  300. to speak about God

  301. is as father.

  302. The Sermon on the Mount

  303. in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  304. to 7

  305. Jesus continually

  306. reveals God

  307. as father.

  308. Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5:44

  309. verse 44

  310. So the implication

  311. is that we

  312. and from the Lord

  313. Jesus Christ himself

  314. we have a merciful father.

  315. When we love our enemies

  316. we reflect

  317. the heart of God.

  318. He is a God

  319. who sustains

  320. the whole earth.

  321. The goodness

  322. and the bounty

  323. of creation

  324. is enjoyed

  325. by all his creatures.

  326. It's the kindness

  327. of our heavenly father

  328. that even an atheist

  329. like Richard Dawkins

  330. can sunbake on the beach

  331. that he can enjoy

  332. the cooling of the waters

  333. that he can savour

  334. a Jamie Oliver meal

  335. that he can know

  336. an intimate relationship

  337. with his wife.

  338. God has made things

  339. so that even unjust people

  340. or people of evil intent

  341. can enjoy his creation.

  342. I could go to lots of places

  343. and I really do feel

  344. like I'm scratching

  345. the surface

  346. and that's not just

  347. a throwaway platitude

  348. but go to Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  349. Jesus makes huge revelations

  350. about the fatherhood of God.

  351. He's a father

  352. who knows our hearts.

  353. We can't pull the wool

  354. over his eyes.

  355. We're not to be hypocrites

  356. going through acts

  357. of religious devotion

  358. to draw attention

  359. to ourselves

  360. and our own self-righteousness.

  361. So he says to us

  362. when you give

  363. or when you pray

  364. or when you fast

  365. don't do those things

  366. to impress people.

  367. Do them out of relationship

  368. with your wonderful

  369. heavenly father.

  370. This is not religious duty.

  371. He's the one

  372. who is able to reward us

  373. and to forgive us

  374. for our sins.

  375. And then he moves

  376. into the Lord's prayer

  377. giving further insights

  378. into the nature

  379. of God's fatherhood.

  380. This is how you should pray.

  381. Our father in heaven

  382. hallowed be your name.

  383. Your kingdom come.

  384. Your will be done

  385. on earth as it is in heaven.

  386. Give us today

  387. our daily bread.

  388. Forgive us our debts

  389. as we have forgiven

  390. our debtors.

  391. And lead us

  392. not into temptation

  393. but deliver us

  394. from the evil one.

  395. For if you forgive men

  396. when they sin against you

  397. your heavenly father

  398. will also forgive you.

  399. But if you do not

  400. forgive people

  401. their sins

  402. your heavenly father

  403. will not forgive

  404. your sins.

  405. So Jesus does

  406. a bucket load

  407. of things in that prayer.

  408. He teaches us

  409. to address God

  410. as father.

  411. And that's a new way

  412. of relating to God

  413. that has never been seen

  414. before in the scriptures.

  415. Jesus himself

  416. addresses God

  417. with a particular

  418. reverence and intimacy

  419. as a son.

  420. In Mark's gospel

  421. in the garden of Gethsemane

  422. he says

  423. Abba Father

  424. everything is possible

  425. for you.

  426. Take this cup

  427. from me.

  428. Yet not what I will

  429. but what you will.

  430. In calling God

  431. Father

  432. he uses a word

  433. that only a true son

  434. would be permitted to use.

  435. Steve's example

  436. with his kids

  437. this morning.

  438. all the loving

  439. respect

  440. and reverence

  441. of dad

  442. but with no

  443. irreverence

  444. or inappropriate

  445. familiarity

  446. like old man

  447. or Steve

  448. or whatever it is.

  449. Our father

  450. in heaven

  451. his dwelling

  452. place is heaven

  453. he lives

  454. in a realm

  455. that we can't

  456. enter into yet

  457. except through prayer

  458. we can't see

  459. and he has this

  460. glorious name

  461. that is to be

  462. treated with the

  463. utmost reverence

  464. and respect.

  465. Your kingdom

  466. come

  467. assumes that the

  468. kingdom of God

  469. the father

  470. is established

  471. in heaven

  472. but is still

  473. being established

  474. on earth

  475. and not everyone

  476. submits to his reign

  477. and rule

  478. so when we pray

  479. for the coming

  480. of God's kingdom

  481. we're actually

  482. praying for men

  483. and women

  484. and boys

  485. and girls

  486. to submit

  487. to his reign

  488. and to the reign

  489. of the Lord

  490. Jesus Christ.

  491. Give us today

  492. our daily bread

  493. he's a father

  494. who we can come

  495. to for what we

  496. need

  497. he is our

  498. provider.

  499. I wish I could

  500. tell you the detail

  501. of this

  502. I can't really

  503. but I can tell you

  504. that this week

  505. I had to bring

  506. some needs to him

  507. which were clearly

  508. beyond my own

  509. resources to manage

  510. and were quite

  511. overwhelming.

  512. And you know

  513. in those moments

  514. when you ask

  515. for help

  516. and you're in pain

  517. and one of the things

  518. you really want God

  519. to do is just

  520. take away the pain?

  521. He did deal

  522. with the pain

  523. but in a way

  524. that I didn't expect

  525. by helping me

  526. and others

  527. to rise up

  528. and to face

  529. the difficulty

  530. and to walk

  531. through the pain

  532. with a trust

  533. and firm trust

  534. in the goodness

  535. of God

  536. and in the Lord

  537. Jesus Christ.

  538. He reversed

  539. the difficulty

  540. and he

  541. caused me

  542. and others

  543. to grow

  544. through that

  545. difficulty.

  546. He knew

  547. what I needed.

  548. Further down

  549. in Matthew 6

  550. the father

  551. is revealed

  552. as a provider

  553. who knows

  554. our bodily

  555. needs of food

  556. and clothing.

  557. Matthew chapter 10

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  558. says the hairs

  559. of our head

  560. are numbered

  561. and a sparrow

  562. doesn't die

  563. without him

  564. even knowing

  565. about it.

  566. Matthew 7

  567. says that God

  568. is a good father

  569. eager to give

  570. good gifts

  571. to his children.

  572. The father

  573. is a powerful

  574. provider.

  575. He's all

  576. knowing.

  577. He delights

  578. to provide

  579. for his children

  580. bountifully.

  581. And the father

  582. is forgiving.

  583. Forgive us

  584. our debts

  585. as we also

  586. have forgiven

  587. our debtors.

  588. We are to

  589. reflect the

  590. character

  591. of our father.

  592. We come to

  593. know him

  594. through the

  595. forgiveness

  596. that we have

  597. in Christ.

  598. it necessarily

  599. follows that

  600. we will

  601. display his

  602. character

  603. as we

  604. forgive people

  605. who have

  606. hurt us.

  607. He invites

  608. us to ask

  609. him for

  610. forgiveness

  611. while presuming

  612. that we will

  613. show mercy

  614. and forgiveness

  615. to others.

  616. He tells

  617. that ugly

  618. parable

  619. in Matthew's

  620. gospel

  621. about the

  622. man who

  623. is forgiven

  624. a huge

  625. and unpayable

  626. debt

  627. and who

  628. then goes

  629. out and

  630. abuses

  631. another man

  632. who owns

  633. a pittance

  634. and he

  635. says such

  636. a man

  637. will come

  638. under the

  639. judgment

  640. of God.

  641. Jesus also

  642. reveals God

  643. as a

  644. father who

  645. loves.

  646. John 3

  647. 16

  648. For God

  649. so loved

  650. the world

  651. that he

  652. gave his

  653. one and

  654. only son

  655. that whoever

  656. believes in

  657. him will not

  658. perish but

  659. have everlasting

  660. life.

  661. there are

  662. some modern

  663. theologians

  664. out there

  665. who have

  666. caused the

  667. precious things

  668. of God

  669. to be

  670. trampled

  671. on.

  672. They

  673. accuse God

  674. the father

  675. of what

  676. they call

  677. cosmic

  678. child abuse

  679. in sending

  680. his son

  681. to do

  682. his dirty

  683. work on

  684. the cross.

  685. And it's

  686. become a

  687. very popular

  688. little refrain

  689. which is

  690. repeated around

  691. the world

  692. and by

  693. numbers of

  694. people who

  695. stand outside

  696. the faith.

  697. And it is

  698. effectively an

  699. injustice, an

  700. accusation of

  701. injustice against

  702. God.

  703. And that could

  704. be a sermon

  705. in itself.

  706. But think

  707. about what I'm

  708. preaching today.

  709. It is the

  710. son who

  711. reveals the

  712. father.

  713. And the

  714. son shows us

  715. his character

  716. and his

  717. nature.

  718. And right

  719. here in

  720. John's gospel

  721. the son who

  722. sees the

  723. bigger picture,

  724. the son who

  725. knows the

  726. father,

  727. the son

  728. insists that

  729. the father's

  730. sending of

  731. him was an

  732. extraordinarily

  733. loving act.

  734. It was

  735. driven by

  736. the father's

  737. love for a

  738. world that

  739. was in

  740. rebellion against

  741. him.

  742. We should

  743. listen to

  744. him.

  745. The

  746. scriptures also

  747. reveal the

  748. father to be

  749. supreme and

  750. also to be

  751. humble.

  752. 1 Corinthians

  753. 15 where

  754. Adam read to

  755. us focuses on

  756. the impact of

  757. Jesus Christ

  758. rising from

  759. the dead,

  760. the

  761. resurrection.

  762. verse 24,

  763. the end

  764. will come

  765. when he

  766. hands over

  767. the kingdom

  768. to God

  769. the father

  770. after he

  771. has destroyed

  772. all dominion,

  773. authority and

  774. power.

  775. For he must

  776. reign until he

  777. has put all

  778. his enemies

  779. under his

  780. feet.

  781. The last

  782. enemy to be

  783. destroyed is

  784. death for he

  785. has put

  786. everything under

  787. his feet.

  788. Now when it

  789. says that

  790. everything has

  791. been put under

  792. his feet it

  793. is clear that

  794. that does not

  795. include God

  796. himself who

  797. put everything

  798. under Christ.

  799. Christ and

  800. when he has

  801. done this

  802. then the

  803. son himself

  804. will be made

  805. subject to

  806. him who put

  807. everything under

  808. him so that

  809. God may be

  810. all in all.

  811. There is

  812. clearly order in

  813. relationship between

  814. the father and

  815. the son.

  816. The father is

  817. the supreme

  818. authority.

  819. The kingdom

  820. of God is

  821. his.

  822. the son is

  823. his regent and

  824. he conquers

  825. through his

  826. death and

  827. resurrection and

  828. having done his

  829. magnificent work he

  830. hands the kingdom

  831. back to his

  832. father and the

  833. son is subject

  834. to him.

  835. Probably say

  836. more about this

  837. next week when

  838. the focus is on

  839. the son and his

  840. work.

  841. But to put it

  842. really simply is

  843. to say that there

  844. is an authority

  845. structure in the

  846. Godhead in the

  847. way that they

  848. relate to one

  849. another.

  850. The spirit

  851. glorifies the

  852. son.

  853. The son gives

  854. glory and directs

  855. his attention to

  856. his unseen

  857. heavenly father.

  858. He gives him the

  859. glory and he

  860. submits to his

  861. authority.

  862. authority.

  863. When I use the

  864. words authority and

  865. submission I hope

  866. that you see that

  867. they are rooted in

  868. the sheer magnificence

  869. and goodness and

  870. love and power and

  871. provision and

  872. planning of God

  873. the father who is

  874. revealed to us

  875. through the Lord

  876. Jesus Christ.

  877. The father has a

  878. certain humility

  879. about him because he

  880. absolutely delights in

  881. the work of his

  882. son.

  883. He exalts him.

  884. At the end of the

  885. Bible in Revelation

  886. 21 the lamb shares

  887. the throne of God

  888. with his father.

  889. They both sit on

  890. the throne together.

  891. The son delights to

  892. yield to his

  893. heavenly father and

  894. he calls us to do

  895. the same.

  896. Now words like

  897. authority and

  898. submission don't sit

  899. well with us.

  900. Especially in

  901. Australia.

  902. We think of

  903. ourselves as

  904. egalitarian.

  905. Nobody's better than

  906. anybody else.

  907. We chop down tall

  908. poppies.

  909. We try to put people

  910. in authority in their

  911. place whether it be

  912. the Prime Minister of

  913. Australia or the

  914. Rector of the Church

  915. whoever it is and we

  916. do not always readily

  917. submit to their

  918. leadership.

  919. But the scriptures

  920. show us that there is

  921. order and relationship

  922. in the Godhead.

  923. Father, Son, Holy

  924. Spirit are in a

  925. relationship with the

  926. Father where the

  927. Father is clearly

  928. supreme.

  929. The mission of the

  930. Lord Jesus Christ

  931. reveals to us this

  932. unseen Father.

  933. He helps us to see

  934. him and to know what

  935. he's like.

  936. He is supreme over

  937. all.

  938. He is magnificently

  939. good.

  940. The Son delights to

  941. submit to him and he

  942. teaches us that our

  943. highest good is to know

  944. him and to submit to

  945. him as well.

  946. Paul's letter to the

  947. Ephesians begins by

  948. declaring the nature of

  949. God and it finishes in

  950. chapters 5 and 6 with

  951. very practical

  952. understandings or

  953. applications to

  954. relationships in both

  955. family and work

  956. relationships based on

  957. who God is.

  958. So it actually says our

  959. human relationships

  960. should be governed by

  961. the nature of God

  962. himself.

  963. So marriage in

  964. Ephesians 5, submit to

  965. one another out of

  966. reverence for Christ.

  967. Wives submit to your

  968. husbands as to the

  969. Lord for the husband is

  970. the head of the wife as

  971. Christ is the head of the

  972. church, his body of

  973. which he is the

  974. saviour.

  975. Now as the church

  976. submits to Christ so

  977. also wives should submit

  978. to their husbands in

  979. everything.

  980. Husbands love your

  981. wives just as Christ

  982. loved the church and

  983. gave himself up for

  984. her.

  985. To make her holy,

  986. cleansing her by the

  987. washing with water

  988. through the word and

  989. to present her to

  990. himself as a radiant

  991. church without stain or

  992. wrinkle or any other

  993. blemish but holy and

  994. blameless.

  995. Mutual submission, a

  996. wife who delights to

  997. submit to and honour her

  998. husband.

  999. husband.

  1000. A husband who generously

  1001. and self-sacrificially

1002. loves his wife with the

1003. sort of love that is

  1004. seen in the Godhead.

  1005. Not self-centred,

  1006. selfish and self-obsessed

  1007. but giving generously for

1008. the benefit of the other.

1009. Most of us know something

  1010. less than the ideal.

1011. We know where we rub in

  1012. relationship.

1013. Some of us may carry very

  1014. deep and unresolved pain.

  1015. I read a book by John

  1016. Piper in January which

  1017. called this

  1018. Impermanent Marriage

  1019. saying that our

  1020. relationships in this life

  1021. are temporary but the

1022. one we have with God into

  1023. the future is permanent.

1024. And it helped me to think

1025. about this passage in a

  1026. fresh way because

1027. as difficult as life and

  1028. relationships sometimes

  1029. are,

1030. God has given us the

  1031. privilege in our

  1032. relationships of reflecting

  1033. something which is even

  1034. greater than us.

  1035. Him.

1036. And so for a believer

  1037. marriage and relationships

1038. are not firstly about us.

1039. They are about God and

1040. they are about God's glory.

1041. So the husband who lives

  1042. with a wife who doesn't

  1043. respect him but who

1044. continues to love his wife

  1045. with abundant love and

  1046. providing generously for her

1047. in a way that reflects

  1048. the nature of our

  1049. heavenly father.

1050. Or a wife with an

  1051. oppressive husband, a

1052. wife who still seeks to

1053. honour him in a way which

  1054. reflects the devotion of

  1055. Christ to his heavenly

  1056. father in loving the

  1057. church.

1058. Kerry's done that for me in

  1059. my marriage.

1060. There have been times in

1061. my marriage where when it

1062. has been all about me or

  1063. all about my ministry.

  1064. I couldn't see it.

  1065. Kerry could.

1066. And she has lived with the

  1067. pain and the oppression

  1068. of it and sometimes

  1069. challenging me but fearing

1070. that I would respond with

  1071. my self-protecting and

  1072. self-justifying wrath to

  1073. close her down.

1074. And she has loved me with a

  1075. Christ-like love in ways

1076. which I often did not

  1077. appreciate and even found

1078. hard to believe and receive

  1079. what she was giving.

1080. You see there is rich blessing

1081. to be had in our marriages if

1082. we would look to God and the

  1083. nature of the relationship

1084. between the father and the

  1085. son.

1086. Men, if we look to the

1087. father we would see how much

1088. he loves, esteems, trusts and

  1089. delights in his son.

1090. He shows us how to

  1091. generously or use authority

1092. with generosity to those that

  1093. we have responsibility and

  1094. accountability for.

1095. Thinking is transferable to the

  1096. workplace.

  1097. I could go there.

1098. I could go to the Christian

  1099. workplace.

1100. I could go to the secular

  1101. workplace.

  1102. Ephesians chapter 6, slaves

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1103. serving whatever master, serve

1104. them all good or bad but serving

1105. them as though you were obeying

1106. Christ and doing it for his

  1107. glory.

1108. Or masters treating slaves in

1109. such a way, employers treating

1110. slaves to their employees in such

1111. a way that they reflect that they

1112. know that they are accountable to a

  1113. heavenly master.

1114. To grow in knowledge of the

1115. father is to grow in our

  1116. knowledge of ourselves.

1117. Who the father is helps us to know

1118. how we are to function in the

  1119. difficult crucible of human

  1120. relationships.

1121. I told you at the beginning my

1122. journey from theism to Christ.

  1123. I didn't monotheism to Christ.

  1124. I didn't understand what God was

  1125. doing at the time.

1126. I now know that Christ was

1127. carrying me on a journey which is

  1128. about knowing his father.

  1129. It's an ongoing journey.

1130. I am secure in Christ, absolutely

  1131. safe in him.

1132. But I am only a minnow in

1133. understanding the depths of the

1134. wisdom of the knowledge of God.

1135. But one thing I do know, that the

1136. only way to know the true God and

1137. father is through his son, the

  1138. Lord Jesus Christ.

1139. Knowing the father will be

  1140. transforming of all human

  1141. relationships.

1142. And so a good question for me, and

  1143. I think it's a good question for you

  1144. as well.

1145. In my family, in my roles in my

1146. workplace, do I reflect the nature

1147. of my heavenly father and his

  1148. relationship with his son?

  1149. Amen.
