  1. Father, thank you for your grace to us in the Lord Jesus Christ

  2. in revealing yourself to us in the person of your Son.

  3. And we pray now that as we come to the Scriptures

  4. that we would delight in him

  5. and that you'd help me to speak clearly about you.

  6. And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  7. Tim Keller has written in his book, Every Good Work,

  8. that people cannot make sense of anything

  9. without attaching it to a storyline.

  10. You can't make sense of anything without attaching it to a storyline.

  11. So he uses the example, after the attacks of September 11,

  12. no one mentioned the event without placing it

  13. into some sort of narrative structure, story structure.

  14. So some people said this is the result of America's abuse

  15. of its imperial power in the world.

  16. And other people said there are many evil people out there who hate us

  17. because we are a good and free country.

  18. And so depending on which story you believed,

  19. you would be associated with either the antagonist or the protagonist.

  20. And your response and your emotions and your actions

  21. would be completely different depending which story is yours.

  22. And he quotes a modern philosopher and he said,

  23. and this is what he writes, I'm just reading from the book,

  24. imagine that you're standing at a bus stop,

  25. a young man comes up to you, you don't know him,

  26. and he says, the name of the common wild duck is Histrionicus,

  27. Histrionicus, Histrionicus.

  28. And even though you understand the sentence,

  29. his action doesn't make any sense.

  30. What's it mean?

  31. And the only way to make sense of it

  32. is to try to learn the story into which this event fits.

  33. So perhaps the young man is mentally ill.

  34. That would explain it.

  35. Or what if somebody,

  36. what if yesterday someone who was your gender,

  37. your age, your appearance,

  38. had approached the young man in the local library,

  39. asking him the Latin word for the wild duck,

  40. and today he'd mistaken you for that person?

  41. That would explain it too.

  42. Or perhaps the young man's a foreign spy,

  43. waiting at a prearranged rendezvous

  44. and uttering the ill-chosen sentence,

  45. which will identify him to his contact.

  46. And so he says,

  47. the first story's sad,

  48. the second story's comic,

  49. and the third story's dramatic.

  50. But the point is,

  51. without some sort of a handle on this story,

  52. there's no way to understand the meaning

  53. of what just happened,

  54. and there's no way to even know

  55. how to answer this man.

  56. So he says,

  57. if you call the police

  58. and it was a simple case of mistaken identity,

  59. it's going to be really embarrassing.

  60. If you pick a fight with somebody

  61. who's a trained assassin,

  62. the result will be even worse.

  63. But in any case,

  64. if you get the story wrong,

  65. your response will be wrong,

  66. and if you get the story of the world wrong,

  67. if, for instance,

  68. you see that life here is all about

  69. your self-actualisation

  70. and your self-fulfilment,

  71. and it's all about you,

  72. rather than the love of God

  73. and knowing God,

  74. then you will get your life responses wrong.

  75. We need to know God's story

  76. if we're going to know God

  77. and how to live in his world.

  78. The Bible begins with Adam and Eve

  79. living perfect harmony

  80. with God and his creation.

  81. Life is good.

  82. Access to God was easy.

  83. They could converse with him in his garden.

  84. They could see him.

  85. They could talk with him.

  86. They could be naked with one another

  87. and with God,

  88. and they would know no shame.

  89. And the tragic end

  90. to a great beginning

  91. comes when Adam and Eve

  92. go it alone,

  93. disobey God.

  94. He shuts them out of the garden,

  95. and perhaps the greatest tragedy

  96. in that judgment

  97. is that they are shut out

  98. from God's personal presence.

  99. They no longer know God

  100. in the intimate way

  101. that they had previously known him.

  102. They're shut out from his presence

  103. and they have lost access to him.

  104. And in some ways,

  105. the entire movement of the Bible

  106. is about how can we come

  107. to know God again

  108. despite our sin,

  109. our failure,

  110. and great wickedness,

  111. which is in all of us.

  112. God's story

  113. is a story about our redemption.

  114. It's about us

  115. coming to know God again.

  116. The journey

  117. of the Bible

  118. is about how God

  119. chooses to reveal himself

  120. to us again.

  121. It's about God

  122. doing something

  123. to bring us out

  124. of the deep darkness

  125. of our own sin

  126. to be able to

  127. for us to be able

  128. to stand safely

  129. in his presence.

  130. And he has taken

  131. extreme measures

  132. to make us safe.

  133. Deb said already

  134. this series

  135. is about God.

  136. He wants us

  137. to know him.

  138. He wants us

  139. to delight

  140. in who he is.

  141. And I've been saying

  142. throughout this series

  143. that we can't know God

  144. in his entirety.

  145. We can only know

  146. as much about him

  147. as he chooses

  148. to reveal

  149. about himself.

  150. We can only see

  151. as much as he

  152. pulls those curtains

  153. back for us

  154. to be able to see.

  155. I've also been saying

  156. that God reveals

  157. himself to us

  158. as three persons

  159. Father, Son

  160. and Holy Spirit.

  161. Three distinct persons

  162. who have different roles

  163. do different things

  164. but each of them

  165. is fully God.

  166. Last week I spoke

  167. about God the Father.

  168. It was a delightful

  169. surprise to me

  170. that he is

  171. to see that he is

  172. hardly known as Father

  173. in the Old Testament.

  174. That was like

  175. an aha moment for me.

  176. It is when Jesus

  177. bursts on the scene

  178. that God as Father

  179. begins to be revealed.

  180. And Jesus' most

  181. common way

  182. of referring to God

  183. is as his Father.

  184. And you see

  185. that Jesus

  186. shows us

  187. God the Father.

  188. He teaches us

  189. to pray to the Father,

  190. that the Father

  191. provides bountifully

  192. good gifts

  193. to his children,

  194. that anyone

  195. who has seen me

  196. has seen the Father

  197. and that the Father

  198. is supreme over all

  199. and the Father

  200. is wonderfully good

  201. and totally glorious.

  202. Let me tell you,

  203. I got to sit with

  204. a friend this week

  205. who I've been talking

  206. to about Christ

  207. for the last three years

  208. and we didn't talk

  209. two ways to live

  210. but he asked me

  211. what I've been preaching

  212. and I told him

  213. what I'd learned

  214. about God the Father

  215. last week.

  216. I think that's evangelism.

  217. It's revealing

  218. what God is like.

  219. Today,

  220. we turn to

  221. his magnificent son.

  222. I'm going

  223. all over the place

  224. in the Bible.

  225. You're welcome

  226. to try to follow

  227. with me.

  228. You might find

  229. I'm moving

  230. a little quickly

  231. sometimes.

  232. John 1,

    John 1:10

  233. verse 10 says

  234. he was in the world.

  235. Speaking about Jesus,

  236. Jesus was in the world

  237. and though the world

  238. was made through him,

  239. the world

  240. did not recognise him.

  241. John makes

  242. the extraordinary claim

  243. that Jesus existed

  244. before he was born.

  245. It's not the only place

  246. in the Bible

  247. that makes that claim.

  248. Colossians 1 tells us,

  249. verse 16,

  250. For by him,

  251. by Jesus,

  252. all things were created,

  253. things in heaven

  254. and on earth,

  255. visible and invisible,

  256. whether thrones

  257. or powers

  258. or rulers

  259. or authorities,

  260. all things were created

  261. by him and for him.

  262. Both passages declare

  263. that Jesus,

  264. that the world,

  265. was made through Jesus.

  266. Colossians says

  267. that the world

  268. was made by Jesus

  269. and it was made

  270. for Jesus.

  271. The world

  272. is the stage

  273. where Jesus

  274. will magnificently

  275. do the extraordinary work

  276. that his father

  277. sent him to do.

  278. The big word

  279. that we use

  280. is incarnation.

  281. God coming amongst us

  282. as a person

  283. and not just any person,

  284. he was the perfect person.

  285. So it's not,

  286. this is not some

  287. eastern doctrine

  288. of reincarnation

  289. where creatures

  290. go round and round

  291. in endless cycles

  292. of existence.

  293. existence.

  294. This is the incarnation

  295. coming into the world,

  296. God coming into the world

  297. in the person

  298. of his son.

  299. So the creator

  300. God of the universe

  301. enters into his creation

  302. in the person

  303. of his son,

  304. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  305. Matthew's gospel

  306. goes to a lot of trouble

  307. to help us to understand

  308. that Jesus wasn't born

  309. because Mary and Joseph

  310. had premarital sex

  311. and something went wrong.

  312. It is very clear

  313. that Joseph is not

  314. Jesus' biological dad.

  315. He was born

  316. because the Holy Spirit

  317. of God

  318. caused Jesus

  319. to be conceived

  320. in Mary

  321. while she was a virgin.

  322. Our creator

  323. became like us,

  324. his creatures,

  325. except that he was

  326. without sin,

  327. he was God himself

  328. entering our world

  329. and he grew

  330. to become

  331. the perfect human being,

  332. he was prepared

  333. to be,

  334. being prepared

  335. to be

  336. a perfect sacrifice.

  337. So Jesus

  338. is human

  339. and in some ways

  340. that's clear.

  341. He was born,

  342. he lived,

  343. he cried,

  344. he laughed,

  345. he had friends

  346. and he had enemies,

  347. he showed compassion

  348. and mercy,

  349. he got hungry,

  350. he suffered,

  351. he grieved.

  352. Hebrews chapter 5

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  353. says he is able

  354. to deal gently

  355. with those

  356. who are ignorant

  357. and going astray

  358. since he himself

  359. is subject

  360. to weakness.

  361. Now I don't know

  362. about you

  363. but I think

  364. when we think

  365. human weakness

  366. we think sin

  367. and failure.

  368. You know,

  369. I opened my mouth

  370. and said that sentence

  371. that I really knew

  372. I shouldn't have said.

  373. Or I went surfing

  374. somewhere on the internet

  375. that I knew

  376. was destructive.

  377. Weakness

  378. for Jesus

  379. wasn't sin.

  380. It was experiencing

  381. the limitation

  382. of life

  383. as a flesh

  384. and blood person.

  385. It says in Hebrews

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  386. chapter 5

  387. that during the days

  388. of Jesus' life

  389. on earth

  390. he offered up

  391. prayers and petitions

  392. with loud cries

  393. and tears

  394. to the one

  395. who could save him

  396. from death.

  397. And he was heard

  398. because of his

  399. reverent submission.

  400. And although

  401. he was a son

  402. he learned obedience

  403. from what he suffered

  404. and once made perfect

  405. he became the source

  406. of eternal salvation

  407. for all who obey him.

  408. He hungered in the desert

  409. for 40 days of testing.

  410. He experienced deep grief

  411. when his friend

  412. John the Baptist

  413. was beheaded.

  414. He was abandoned

  415. by many disciples

  416. in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  417. when they didn't

  418. understand his teaching.

  419. His suffering

  420. was unjust.

  421. He did such good

  422. to so many people

  423. and the leaders

  424. of the nations

  425. hated him for it.

  426. They falsely accused him

  427. of being empowered

  428. by Satan.

  429. He was bashed

  430. nearly to death.

  431. He was executed

  432. by suffocating

  433. on a cross

  434. because people

  435. had lied

  436. at his trial.

  437. God

  438. my whole message

  439. last week

  440. was that Jesus

  441. is the one

  442. who reveals

  443. the God and Father

  444. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  445. and every true thing

  446. that we know

  447. about the Father

  448. is revealed

  449. by his obedient son.

  450. Jesus had a difficult life

  451. and he persevered

  452. in that difficult life

  453. absolutely dependent

  454. on his heavenly Father.

  455. His amazingly selfless prayer

  456. in the Garden of Gethsemane

  457. the night before he died

  458. he fell with his face

  459. to the ground

  460. and he prayed

  461. my Father

  462. if it is possible

  463. may this cup

  464. be taken from me

  465. yet not my will

  466. but as you will

  467. my Father

  468. if possible

  469. yet not what I want

  470. but what you want.

  471. He's the Lord's prayer

  472. personified.

  473. Your kingdom come

  474. O God

  475. your will be done

  476. ahead of mine.

  477. It's a prayer

  478. of dependent trust

  479. Father I am hurting

  480. in this moment

  481. but I trust

  482. in your good will

  483. and your purposes.

  484. You know

  485. when we hurt

  486. what do we want to do?

  487. We really want to tell God

  488. what he needs to do

  489. to get us out of this mess.

  490. Take this pain

  491. away from him.

  492. And you see in Jesus

  493. that he doesn't hesitate

  494. to tell his Father

  495. that he is hurting

  496. but he does not insist

  497. on his way out

  498. he trusts his Father's

  499. plans and purposes

  500. being for good.

  501. Three times in Matthew's

  502. gospel he teaches

  503. his disciples

  504. that he's going to

  505. suffer

  506. at the hands

  507. of the religious leaders

  508. that he will die

  509. and three days later

  510. he will rise.

  511. He was trusting

  512. that his Father

  513. was going to raise him

  514. from the dead

  515. by faith.

  516. Hebrews chapter 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  517. says it another way

  518. it says

  519. therefore when Christ

  520. came into the world

  521. he said

  522. sacrifice an offering

  523. you did not desire

  524. but a body

  525. you prepared for me.

  526. With burnt offerings

  527. and sin offerings

  528. you were not pleased.

  529. But then I said

  530. here I am

  531. it is written about me

  532. in the scroll

  533. I have come

  534. to do your will

  535. O God.

  536. So Christ

  537. came into the world

  538. he accepted

  539. the limitations

  540. of a human body

  541. he was sinless

  542. his sinless body

  543. became the only

  544. possible sacrifice

  545. for our sins

  546. there is no

  547. other perfect person.

  548. isn't that a relief

  549. that we don't even

  550. have to look for one

  551. or try to be?

  552. But more amazing

  553. still is the view

  554. that Christ

  555. had of himself

  556. in Mark 10

  557. Jesus has been

  558. teaching his disciples

  559. about dark days ahead

  560. and he's going

  561. about this really

  562. serious teaching

  563. which is obviously

  564. causing him

  565. a reasonable amount

  566. of grief

  567. and the disciples

  568. are bickering

  569. about status

  570. and position.

  571. And James and John

  572. they make their move

  573. and they ask

  574. for special position

  575. in heaven

  576. ahead of the rest.

  577. And there is this

  578. very unedifying

  579. argument about

  580. who will have

  581. the most important

  582. place in heaven.

  583. We could try

  584. here this morning

  585. I wonder

  586. who it's and Paul's

  587. will be more

  588. important in heaven.

  589. It's embarrassing

  590. and it's

  591. extremely unhelpful.

  592. And Jesus says

  593. if you are going

  594. to be great

  595. learn to be a servant

  596. a slave

  597. or a servant.

  598. And he explains

  599. his own life

  600. and his mission.

  601. For verse 45

  602. Mark 10

    Mark 10:45

  603. verse 45

  604. this is a keeper

  605. this is one of

  606. those verses

  607. you learn

  608. and you remember

  609. forever.

  610. The son of man

  611. did not come

  612. to be served

  613. but to serve

  614. and to give his

  615. life as a ransom

  616. for many.

  617. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  618. is an awesome hymn

  619. of praise

  620. to Christ

  621. describing his mission.

  622. The one who being

  623. in very nature

  624. God

  625. did not consider

  626. equality with God

  627. something to be grasped

  628. but made himself

  629. nothing

  630. taking the very

  631. nature of a

  632. servant

  633. a slave

  634. being made in

  635. human likeness

  636. and being found

  637. in appearance

  638. as a man

  639. he humbled himself

  640. and became

  641. obedient to death

  642. even death

  643. on a cross.

  644. And therefore

  645. God exalted him

  646. to the highest place

  647. and gave him

  648. the name that is

  649. above every name

  650. that at the name

  651. of Jesus

  652. every knee

  653. should bow

  654. in heaven

  655. and on earth

  656. and under the earth

  657. and every tongue

  658. confess

  659. that Jesus Christ

  660. is Lord

  661. to the glory

  662. of God the Father.

  663. God the Son

  664. absolutely

  665. equal with God

  666. in nature

  667. didn't try

  668. to cling

  669. to the rights

  670. of his position.

  671. it's been called

  672. God's great

  673. bungee jump

  674. left heaven

  675. stepped away

  676. from entitlement

  677. and prestige

  678. and honour

  679. and fell

  680. face forward

  681. and smashed

  682. into the earth.

  683. As a man

  684. he allowed himself

  685. to be subjected

  686. to indignity

  687. and humiliation

  688. ultimately

  689. God permitted

  690. his creatures

  691. to do their worst

  692. to him

  693. they tried

  694. to snatch

  695. the kingdom

  696. from God

  697. by launching

  698. an all-out assault

  699. on his son.

  700. And Jesus

  701. anticipated

  702. what was going

  703. to happen

  704. when he

  705. retold

  706. the parable

  707. of the vineyard

  708. from Isaiah

  709. and applied it

  710. to his own rejection.

  711. The man

  712. who owned

  713. the vineyard

  714. he put tenants

  715. in charge.

  716. The tenants

  717. refused to

  718. acknowledge the owner

  719. by not paying

  720. the rent.

  721. They beat

  722. and killed

  723. the messengers

  724. who were seen

  725. climaxing in the

  726. death even

  727. of John the Baptist.

  728. and finally

  729. he says

  730. I will send

  731. my son

  732. whom I love

  733. they will

  734. respect him

  735. and the tenants

  736. see the son

  737. and they decide

  738. to kill him

  739. and steal the kingdom

  740. and the inheritance

  741. for themselves.

  742. to reject

  743. Jesus

  744. is the

  745. most awful

  746. expression

  747. of our

  748. rejection

  749. of God

  750. the Father.

  751. It's as though

  752. we have tried

  753. to seize

  754. God

  755. with our own

  756. hands

  757. and sought

  758. to destroy

  759. him

  760. it is the

  761. most terrible

  762. thing to have

  763. been done

  764. in the whole

  765. of human

  766. history.

  767. and God

  768. holds us

  769. all culpable

  770. because it is

  771. the ultimate

  772. re-expression

  773. of Adam

  774. and Eve's

  775. sins.

  776. We shut

  777. God out

  778. of our

  779. lives

  780. we try

  781. to kick

  782. him

  783. out of

  784. his

  785. garden

  786. and destroy

  787. him

  788. forever.

  789. It is

  790. great

  791. wickedness.

  792. God's

  793. point of

  794. view

  795. Psalm 2

  796. says

  797. he laughs

  798. not because

  799. he thinks

  800. our efforts

  801. are funny

  802. but because

  803. they are so

  804. puny

  805. and ridiculously

  806. ineffective.

  807. He deals

  808. with the

  809. rejection

  810. of his

  811. son by

  812. vindicating

  813. in a

  814. flash

  815. he makes

  816. him alive

  817. again.

  818. We did

  819. our worst

  820. to kick

  821. God out

  822. of the

  823. picture

  824. and he

  825. reverses

  826. it in

  827. an instant

  828. and raises

  829. him as

  830. king in

  831. heaven.

  832. So

  833. Psalm

  834. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  835. chapter 2

  836. therefore God

  837. exalted

  838. him to

  839. the highest

  840. place and

  841. gave him

  842. the name

  843. that is

  844. above every

  845. name that

  846. at the

  847. name of

  848. Jesus every

  849. knee should

  850. bow in

  851. heaven and

  852. on earth and

  853. under the

  854. earth and

  855. every tongue

  856. confess that

  857. Jesus Christ

  858. is Lord to

  859. the glory of

  860. God the

  861. Father.

  862. Yes.

  863. So God

  864. has vindicated

  865. his son and

  866. we are

  867. accountable to

  868. him whether

  869. we like it

  870. or not.

  871. The son of

  872. God has

  873. conquered

  874. through service.

  875. He didn't

  876. seek glory.

  877. He was given

  878. it by his

  879. heavenly father.

  880. His ultimate

  881. ministry was to

  882. submit to his

  883. father's will and

  884. lay down his

  885. life.

  886. In John 10

  887. he says the

  888. reason that my

  889. father loves me

  890. is that I lay

  891. down my life

  892. only to take it

  893. up again.

  894. No one takes

  895. it from me

  896. but I lay

  897. it down of my

  898. own accord.

  899. I have

  900. authority to

  901. lay it down

  902. and authority

  903. to take it

  904. up again.

  905. This command

  906. I receive

  907. from my

  908. father.

  909. Brothers and

  910. sisters we

  911. cannot emulate

  912. Christ in

  913. perfection and

  914. that's not what

  915. he calls us to

  916. do.

  917. His sacrifice

  918. is unique.

  919. His

  920. personhood is

  921. unique.

  922. He is God

  923. himself fully

  924. God.

  925. He is also

  926. fully a

  927. person.

  928. And he has

  929. taken perfect

  930. humanity in

  931. himself into

  932. heaven right

  933. now.

  934. But we

  935. must take

  936. heed of what

  937. he has said

  938. to his

  939. disciples when

  940. they are arguing

  941. over status and

  942. position.

  943. I have

  944. known a lot

  945. of joy since

  946. coming to

  947. St. Paul's

  948. and I have

  949. done a lot

  950. of growing

  951. too.

  952. I have

  953. experienced

  954. things I have

  955. never experienced

  956. before and

  957. worked in a

  958. team which

  959. has just

  960. been wonderful.

  961. But let

  962. me tell you

  963. that what I

  964. find very

  965. difficult and

  966. it has been a

  967. significant problem

  968. here that has

  969. occurred over and

  970. over and over

  971. again.

  972. People who push

  973. hard for things

  974. to be done

  975. their way.

  976. Now let me tell

  977. you I have got my

  978. own willfulness so

  979. I am probably a

  980. player in this as

  981. well.

  982. But this is how

  983. we do it.

  984. Don't you know

  985. who I am?

  986. This is my

  987. ministry at

  988. St. Paul's.

  989. When I went to

  990. my last parish

  991. 13 years ago

  992. a woman was on

  993. my doorstep in

  994. the first few

  995. days and she

  996. said I am the

  997. women's evangelist

  998. use me.

  999. Let me tell you

  1000. when you first go

  1001. to a parish

  1002. you are like a

  1003. rabbit in

  1004. headlights.

  1005. You are trying

  1006. to get a handle

  1007. on this strange

  1008. new place and

  1009. I didn't meet

  1010. her expectations.

  1011. But what she

  1012. couldn't see was

  1013. she brought to

  1014. me a very

  1015. exalted view of

  1016. herself as an

  1017. evangelist.

  1018. And she saw

  1019. herself as better

  1020. than others.

  1021. And she pushed

  1022. herself forward

  1023. over others.

  1024. And she didn't

  1025. get the recognition

  1026. that she thought

  1027. she deserved

  1028. and she left.

  1029. Now she wasn't

  1030. giftless and

  1031. she wasn't

  1032. Christless and

  1033. she could have

  1034. been a huge

  1035. help in our

  1036. church with her

  1037. gifts and her

  1038. heart for the

  1039. Lord Jesus if

  1040. she had just

  1041. come forward

  1042. and asked how

  1043. can I serve

  1044. these are some

  1045. of the things I

  1046. think I can do.

  1047. but she came

  1048. as a Lord

  1049. and not as a

  1050. servant.

  1051. Jesus says if

  1052. you are going

  1053. to be great

  1054. learn to be a

  1055. slave or a

  1056. servant.

  1057. Service is

  1058. ministry.

  1059. And the word

  1060. means the same

  1061. thing.

  1062. The ministries

  1063. that Christ

  1064. gives us are

  1065. not so that we

  1066. can glory over

  1067. one another and

  1068. say how important

  1069. we are.

  1070. He allows us to

  1071. serve for the

  1072. benefit of his

  1073. people and his

  1074. purposes.

  1075. So whenever we

  1076. slip into a

  1077. mindset of what

  1078. about me,

  1079. it might be

  1080. appropriate to

  1081. us sometimes but

  1082. other times we

  1083. lose our

  1084. servant-heartedness

  1085. focus becomes

  1086. and the focus

  1087. becomes me and

  1088. I lose my

  1089. focus on my

  1090. master's business.

  1091. I love some of

  1092. the work that

  1093. Deb's been done

  1094. helping us to

  1095. think about the

  1096. mindset that we

  1097. bring to church.

  1098. You know, the

  1099. people in the

  1100. car park in the

  1101. morning, they're

  1102. not just trying to

  1103. line up cars and

  1104. maximise space so

  1105. that we can get

  1106. 51 cars instead of

  1107. 50 into the car

  1108. park.

  1109. That's not what

  1110. it's about.

  1111. They're

  1112. welcomers.

  1113. They're the

  1114. first point of

  1115. contact when a

  1116. new person comes to

  1117. church and drives

  1118. into our car park.

  1119. And so they have

  1120. this wonderful

  1121. opportunity to

  1122. communicate to

  1123. people that we're

  1124. really glad to see

  1125. this.

  1126. We're glad for you

  1127. to be here.

  1128. Is there anything

  1129. that you need to

  1130. know from us in

  1131. terms of where to

  1132. go or who's who

  1133. or what's what?

  1134. They help people.

  1135. And so a servant

  1136. is a person who

  1137. operates with the

  1138. other in mind and

  1139. not with their own

  1140. to-do list.

  1141. When my child or

  1142. my spouse is

  1143. needing and hurting

  1144. or crying, are

  1145. they just this

  1146. bother and

  1147. trouble to what I

  1148. plan to do?

  1149. Or do I see

  1150. myself as their

  1151. chief provider and

  1152. carer and

  1153. respond accordingly?

  1154. It comes from

  1155. Jesus.

  1156. The Son of Man

  1157. did not come to

  1158. be served but to

  1159. serve and to give

  1160. his life as a

  1161. ransom for many.

  1162. The last thing I

1163. want us to see is

  1164. that Jesus both

  1165. identifies as God

  1166. and is worshipped

  1167. as God.

  1168. And when people

  1169. like Jehovah's

  1170. Witnesses want to

  1171. tell you that Jesus

  1172. isn't God, know

  1173. these things.

  1174. Colossians chapter

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1175. 2 and John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1176. chapter 12

  1177. describe Jesus'

  1178. victory at the

  1179. cross in cosmic

  1180. terms.

  1181. Colossians 2

  1182. 15, having

  1183. disarmed the

  1184. powers and

  1185. authorities, he

  1186. made a public

  1187. spectacle of them

  1188. triumphing over

  1189. them by the

  1190. cross.

  1191. In John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1192. chapter 12,

  1193. now is the time

  1194. for judgment on

  1195. this world.

  1196. Now the prince of

  1197. this world will be

  1198. driven out but I

1199. when I am lifted up

  1200. from the earth

  1201. will draw all

  1202. people to myself.

  1203. in Mark

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  1204. chapter 2,

  1205. Jesus heals

  1206. the paralyzed

  1207. man that the

  1208. religious leaders,

  1209. when Jesus heals

  1210. the paralyzed man

  1211. in Mark 2,

  1212. the religious

  1213. leaders are

  1214. scandalized when

  1215. Jesus says to

  1216. this man,

  1217. your sins are

  1218. forgiven.

  1219. Absolutely

  1220. scandalized.

  1221. And they

  1222. rightly declare,

  1223. only God has the

  1224. authority on earth

  1225. to declare sins

  1226. forgiven.

  1227. How dare you do

  1228. such a thing?

  1229. But they don't

  1230. recognize that God

  1231. is standing in

  1232. their midst.

  1233. Throughout John's

  1234. gospel, Jesus

  1235. calls himself,

  1236. I am.

  1237. It's the same way

  1238. that God identified

  1239. himself to Moses at

  1240. the burning bush.

  1241. Jesus said, I am

  1242. the bread of life,

1243. I am the light of

1244. the world, I am the

  1245. good shepherd, I am

1246. the true vine, I am

  1247. the way, the truth

  1248. and the life.

  1249. No one comes to

  1250. the Father except

  1251. through me.

  1252. He speaks as God.

  1253. The end of the

  1254. Bible, it's filled

  1255. with thanks and

  1256. praise to our

  1257. glorious Lord Jesus

  1258. Christ.

  1259. There are three

  1260. songs in Revelation

  1261. 5, we read them

  1262. often enough, but

  1263. these are glorious

  1264. songs and they're

  1265. worth singing.

  1266. The creatures, you

  1267. get this picture,

  1268. there's different

  1269. groups of people

  1270. who are singing

  1271. the songs.

  1272. So the first

  1273. song is sung by

  1274. the 12 living

  1275. creatures, the 24

  1276. living creatures,

  1277. whatever they are,

  1278. that are in the

  1279. immediate presence of

  1280. God around you.

  1281. around the throne

  1282. of God in

  1283. heaven and this

  1284. is what they

  1285. sing.

  1286. They sing this to

  1287. the Lamb, to the

  1288. Lord Jesus, you

  1289. are worthy to take

  1290. the scroll and to

  1291. open its seals because

  1292. you were slain and

  1293. with your blood you

  1294. purchase people for

  1295. God from every tribe

  1296. and language and

  1297. people and nation and

1298. you have made them to

  1299. be a kingdom and

  1300. priests to serve our

  1301. God and they will

  1302. reign on the earth.

  1303. They praise the Lord

  1304. Jesus for the ransom

  1305. price that he has

  1306. paid to bring people

  1307. into God's kingdom

  1308. from all the nations

  1309. of the earth, even

  1310. us.

  1311. And we're a

  1312. multinational lot,

  1313. aren't we?

  1314. They praise him for

  1315. his selfless act of

  1316. service.

  1317. That's the song that's

  1318. sung in heaven around

  1319. the throne of God.

  1320. God.

  1321. And then the third

  1322. song, it's a song

1323. which is now sung by

  1324. a different group.

  1325. It says, every

  1326. creature in heaven

  1327. and on earth and

  1328. under the earth.

  1329. It includes us.

1330. And we sing to him

1331. who sits on the throne

1332. and to the Lamb be

  1333. praise and honour and

  1334. glory and power for

  1335. ever and ever.

  1336. The Father on the

  1337. throne and his Son,

  1338. the Lamb, receive our

  1339. worship.

  1340. They are worshipped as

  1341. God forever.

  1342. So brothers and

  1343. sisters, God has

  1344. shown his face amongst

1345. us in the person of

  1346. his Son.

  1347. He has clearly revealed

  1348. himself to be a

  1349. servant in submission

  1350. to his Father.

1351. Father, he is now our

  1352. risen God, the King.

1353. And Psalm 2 tells us

1354. how to respond to such

1355. a mighty Son who is

  1356. King.

  1357. Psalm 2 says, be

  1358. wise, serve the Lord

  1359. with fear and rejoice

  1360. with trembling.

1361. Kiss the Son, lest he be

  1362. angry and you be

  1363. destroyed in your way.

  1364. For his wrath can

1365. flare up in a moment,

  1366. but blessed are all

  1367. who take refuge in

  1368. him.

1369. If you do not yet

  1370. know the Son, what

  1371. do you do?

  1372. You kiss him.

  1373. You make peace with

  1374. him.

  1375. You find yourself a

  1376. safe place with him

1377. so that you are not

  1378. burnt when his wrath

1379. flares up in a moment.

  1380. Amen.
