  1. It's great to be here this morning.

  2. On Easter Sundays, we celebrate life and new life.

  3. And that's the segue into announcing that Sam and Sal are expecting a second child.

  4. So, what a great day.

  5. But wait, there's more.

  6. Adam and Brenda are expecting their first child.

  7. Fantastic you guys.

  8. Good morning.

  9. My name is Steve Jeffrey.

  10. I'm one of the ministry team here.

  11. I grew up one of three boys.

  12. My cousins, all the ones we had anything to do with, were all boys.

  13. I grew up on a farm, motorbike riding, shooting guns,

  14. explosives licensed by the age of 18.

  15. So, my life was surrounded like that, flanny shirts, boots.

  16. And I'm the dad of three girls.

  17. And so, I've been introduced to a world that I've never had any interest in

  18. or was unaware of, a Barbie world.

  19. And so, 7,000 kilometres in a car last August and September

  20. with Barbie playing in the TV screen behind my headrest

  21. causes one to be familiar with Barbie world.

  22. What I discovered with all the Barbie movies

  23. was that there was a good versus evil plot.

  24. And there's always a tense moment in the middle of the movie

  25. with a protagonist who looks like Barbie,

  26. but is more evil than Barbie.

  27. And it appears in that tense moment that evil will win the day.

  28. But with a quick change of clothes and a reapplication of make-up

  29. and a little dose of self-confidence,

  30. Barbie's character always comes through at the end to win the day.

  31. What I find interesting, though,

  32. is in that moment, the concern which is expressed

  33. on the face of my daughter is that evil will triumph.

  34. The youngest, or the middle one, would say,

  35. Turn it off, Izzy! Turn it off!

  36. Yell in the back seat.

  37. And she could not cope with the fact that evil was going to win the day.

  38. Oh, there was an attempt to fast-forward that bit of the movie.

  39. What is surprising to me is that they've seen it a dozen times.

  40. They know how it's going to end up.

  41. And they've seen a dozen of these movies

  42. and they always know that Barbie will win in the end.

  43. It's a world of pink and purple

  44. and good always triumphs with flowers

  45. and colour and delightful stuff.

  46. And it surprises me

  47. because a number of times I would say,

  48. But you know how it's going to end.

  49. And yet it's something delightful as well.

  50. The storyline has not lost its thrill.

  51. Although I must say,

  52. several months down the track,

  53. it has lost its thrill.

  54. I don't hear the crying out,

  55. Turn it off, Izzy!

  56. Turn it off!

  57. Which, of course, is my concern with Easter.

  58. It was bad news for Jesus on Good Friday,

  59. but we all know how it works out.

  60. You know the end of the story.

  61. So in preparing for today,

  62. it makes me feel like I'm talking about something,

  63. talking about a book,

  64. and you've all read the end of the book.

  65. And so where's the surprise in it?

  66. Where's the thrill in it?

  67. Of course, the temptation is to have a mere historical

  68. or academic engagement with Easter

  69. and to miss its impact for us today.

  70. And so I'd like us to recapture some of the awe.

  71. I'd like to see that for myself,

  72. to marvel at the resurrection,

  73. even though we know how it works out.

  74. To walk out of here with hearts filled with joy

  75. and hope and purpose and expectation and love.

  76. Let's be astonished at the resurrection.

  77. And to do that, you must begin with understanding.

  78. You need to know the story and how it ends.

  79. If you make less of the truth and the facts and the reality,

  80. then your wonder of it all will just be shallow.

  81. Take, for instance, the article

  82. that was printed at the Sydney Morning Herald

  83. on Good Friday in 2005.

  84. It was written by Hugh Mackay,

  85. social commentator,

  86. and he made this comment about Easter

  87. and the resurrection of Jesus.

  88. He says,

  89. Christians celebrate new life at Easter,

  90. but in a religious sense.

  91. The focus of their festival is the belief

  92. that tragedy and grief,

  93. symbolised by the crucifixion,

  94. can give way to new life,

  95. symbolised by the resurrection,

  96. and that pain and loss are essential steps

  97. on the journey towards enlightenment.

  98. And so he says that

  99. Easter is a festival of hope,

  100. a celebration of faith in the future,

  101. and a reminder

  102. that despite our failures and frailties and flaws,

  103. personal resurrection is always a possibility for us.

  104. It's positive.

  105. And yet,

  106. Mackay's point is that the resurrection is symbolic.

  107. Whether it happened or not

  108. is not the issue for him.

  109. He suggests that

  110. what it's all about

  111. is symbolism,

  112. and that symbolism is positive

  113. and powerful in your life.

  114. It's an example and a metaphor for our life.

  115. New life and growth through suffering.

  116. To grow, we're going to need to suffer a little,

  117. just like pruning a rose.

  118. That's the point of the resurrection.

  119. And I think Mackay's representation of Easter

  120. is probably the view of a number of people

  121. when it comes to the resurrection.

  122. And while many would see his view as intelligent

  123. and conciliatory and positive and rational,

  124. it fails to grasp

  125. is that the resurrection is not merely symbolic.

  126. It is not a myth

  127. that is okay to believe

  128. if it works for you.

  129. And so as I look at the Bible,

  130. as we're going to do that together

  131. in Philippians 2 and 3,

  132. and so grab your Bibles in preparation for that

  133. and turn to Philippians 2 and 3,

  134. the passage we just read out for us.

  135. As I look at the Bible,

  136. as we do this together

  137. and speak about the resurrection of Jesus,

  138. I'm not merely putting another alternative

  139. in front of you this morning.

  140. The resurrection of Jesus

  141. is not a satisfying myth

  142. that helps some people,

  143. us in this room maybe,

  144. to interpret life

  145. so that it becomes livable

  146. and even possibly more enjoyable for us.

  147. Easter is about real persons

  148. and historical events

  149. and divine intentions

  150. that really happened.

  151. The resurrection is more real

  152. and more exciting

  153. and more terrifying

  154. and more life-changing

  155. than any myth

  156. or any other truth claim.

  157. Now friends, this is Easter.

  158. It is the celebration

  159. of the historical resurrection

  160. of Jesus from the dead.

  161. He is alive.

  162. He is not mere memory,

  163. a mere historical figure

  164. like a Julius Caesar

  165. or a Shakespeare

  166. or an Abraham Lincoln.

  167. He is back from the dead

  168. with a new glorious body.

  169. He is alive.

  170. He is reigning

  171. as the king of the universe

  172. as Philippians 2 says

  173. and he is making this offer

  174. of real life

  175. and hope to us today.

  176. Now I know that I'm taking

  177. a lot for granted

  178. when I say that.

  179. So let me put it

  180. into some sort of context.

  181. We Christians believe

  182. that what the 27 books

  183. of the New Testament

  184. record about Jesus

  185. are true.

  186. These books uniformly teach

  187. or assume that Jesus

  188. lived in history,

  189. that he died

  190. as a substitute for sinners

  191. and he rose on the third day

  192. and that he ascended to heaven

  193. and rules the world

  194. as the God

  195. of all the universe.

  196. These 27 books

  197. are riddled

  198. with references

  199. to the physical resurrection

  200. of Jesus from the dead

  201. as we declared together

  202. a little bit earlier

  203. in our service

  204. reading out

  205. from 1 Corinthians 15.

  206. These accounts

  207. of what happened

  208. in the life of Jesus

  209. are totally different

  210. than myth

  211. like Greek

  212. or Roman mythology

  213. which is shrouded

  214. in a distant past

  215. that does not connect

  216. with real history.

  217. The New Testament books

  218. are talking

  219. about real history.

  220. Pilate,

  221. Roman governor,

  222. Herod,

  223. the king from Galilee,

  224. Caiaphas,

  225. the high priest.

  226. They are not

  227. mythical figures.

  228. These people are known

  229. from history

  230. outside of the New Testament.

  231. The accounts

  232. of the New Testament

  233. were all written

  234. while eyewitnesses

  235. were still alive.

  236. We said that

  237. a little bit early

  238. in our service.

  239. Paul's letters

  240. were written

  241. 15 to 30 years

  242. after the death

  243. of Jesus.

  244. As we just read,

  245. he mentions the fact

  246. that 500 people

  247. had seen the risen Jesus

  248. at one time

  249. and that most of them

  250. were still alive

  251. as he pens the history.

  252. Most of the books,

  253. maybe all of them

  254. were written

  255. before 70 AD,

  256. 40 years

  257. after the death

  258. of Jesus.

  259. This is not mythology.

  260. This is history.

  261. It is remembered history.

  262. It is eyewitness history.

  263. And add to this

  264. that the enemies

  265. of Christianity

  266. would have loved

  267. nothing better

  268. than to wheel

  269. a dead body

  270. in a wheelbarrow

  271. into Jerusalem

  272. to prove

  273. that it was

  274. all a hoax.

  275. And they couldn't.

  276. The Romans

  277. themselves

  278. stationed their own

  279. soldiers

  280. at the entrance

  281. of the tomb

  282. and it was empty.

  283. There was no dead body.

  284. And the thought

  285. that the scared

  286. disciples

  287. who abandoned

  288. Jesus

  289. at his crucifixion

  290. for fear of their lives,

  291. that they would

  292. suddenly come together

  293. and agree amongst

  294. themselves

  295. to create a hoax,

  296. that they would

  297. steal the body

  298. and then that they

  299. would die for that

  300. hoax

  301. is ludicrous.

  302. These disciples

  303. of Jesus

  304. were not wacko.

  305. They were witnesses.

  306. And what we have

  307. in the New Testament

  308. is not mythology.

  309. But Jesus

  310. as eyewitnesses

  311. remembered him.

  312. And the point

  313. of all this

  314. is simply to say

  315. that when we

  316. Christians say

  317. Jesus is risen

  318. from the dead,

  319. we're not speaking

  320. mythically.

  321. We're not speaking

  322. blindly.

  323. We're not speaking

  324. symbolically.

  325. We're not speaking

  326. spiritually

  327. or just emotionally.

  328. We're speaking

  329. historically.

  330. Now, of course,

  331. the aim of all

  332. this history

  333. is that we might

  334. be astounded

  335. at the majesty

  336. of Jesus Christ

  337. this Easter.

  338. The point is

  339. that we might

  340. marvel

  341. and stand

  342. in awe

  343. and be amazed

  344. and get

  345. the impact

  346. of Easter

  347. Sunday

  348. in 2013.

  349. Some of this

  350. majesty

  351. and impact

  352. was there

  353. for us

  354. in Philippians

    Philippians 3:20–21

  355. 3

  356. verses 20

  357. to 21.

  358. So if you

  359. want to go

  360. there,

  361. Philippians 3,

  362. Adam read out

  363. to us.

  364. Have you got

  365. a page

  366. there on

  367. your Bible,

  368. Adam?

  369. Sorry?

  370. 1140.

  371. Page 1140

  372. in the pew

  373. Bibles

  374. if it's there

  375. in front of you.

  376. Philippians 3

    Philippians 3:20–21

  377. verses 20

  378. to 21.

  379. But our

  380. citizenship

  381. is in heaven

  382. and we

  383. eagerly

  384. await a

  385. saviour

  386. from there,

  387. the Lord

  388. Jesus Christ

  389. who by the

  390. power that

  391. enables him

  392. to bring

  393. everything

  394. under his

  395. control

  396. will transform

  397. our lowly

  398. bodies

  399. so that

  400. they will

  401. be like

  402. his

  403. glorious

  404. body.

  405. What an

  406. astounding

  407. couple of

  408. verses.

  409. Now something

  410. is assumed

  411. there in

  412. verse 20

  413. and 21.

  414. What is

  415. assumed is

  416. that Jesus

  417. was raised

  418. from the dead

  419. and that he

  420. is now

  421. alive

  422. and is

  423. now very

  424. powerful

  425. to put it

  426. mindly.

  427. The reason

  428. Paul assumes

  429. it here

  430. in chapter

  431. 3

  432. is because

  433. it's what

  434. he said

  435. in chapter

  436. 2.

  437. It's what

  438. was read

  439. out to us

  440. as well.

  441. And so let

  442. me go back

  443. to chapter

  444. 2 and make

  445. it explicit

  446. and clear

  447. for us.

  448. And let me

  449. say by way

  450. of introduction

  451. you will

  452. never read

  453. anything

  454. anywhere

  455. in any

  456. literature

  457. more sweeping

  458. and important

  459. and true

  460. than these

  461. verses

  462. in chapter

  463. 2 of

  464. Philippians.

  465. Let's

  466. start at

  467. verse 6

  468. referring to

  469. Jesus

  470. who

  471. being in

  472. very nature

  473. God

  474. did not

  475. consider

  476. equality

  477. with God

  478. something to

  479. be grasped

  480. but made

  481. himself

  482. nothing.

  483. Taking the

  484. very nature

  485. of servant

  486. being made

  487. in human

  488. likeness

  489. and being

  490. found in

  491. appearance as a

  492. man he

  493. humbled himself

  494. and became

  495. obedient to

  496. death

  497. even death

  498. on a cross.

  499. And therefore

  500. God exalted

  501. him to the

  502. highest place

  503. and gave him

  504. the name

  505. that is above

  506. every day

  507. that at the

  508. name of

  509. Jesus

  510. every knee

  511. should bow

  512. in heaven

  513. and on

  514. earth

  515. and under

  516. the earth

  517. and every

  518. tongue confess

  519. that Jesus

  520. Christ is

  521. Lord to

  522. the glory

  523. of God

  524. the Father.

  525. There is

  526. Easter impact.

  527. Christ was

  528. and is

  529. equal with

  530. God

  531. he is

  532. God

  533. he became

  534. human being

  535. he obediently

  536. suffered and

  537. died

  538. and that

  539. means that

  540. it was a

  541. planned death

  542. it was not

  543. an accident

  544. of history

  545. it was a

  546. planned death

  547. and the point

  548. of the plan

  549. was that the

  550. Lord Jesus

  551. Christ be a

  552. substitute for

  553. all sinners

  554. who would

  555. trust in him

  556. that was

  557. God's loving

  558. plan for the

  559. salvation of

  560. sinners like

  561. us

  562. and then it

  563. says

  564. therefore God

  565. exalted him

  566. to the highest

  567. place

  568. in other words

  569. because of his

  570. obedient and

  571. successful life

  572. and death

  573. God raised him

  574. from the dead

  575. and gave him

  576. great glory

  577. as the Lord

  578. of the universe

  579. that is the

  580. astounding

  581. assumption behind

  582. Philippians 3

  583. 20 to 21

  584. but our

  585. citizenship is in

  586. heaven

  587. and we

  588. eagerly await a

  589. saviour from

  590. there the

  591. Lord Jesus

  592. Christ

  593. who by the

  594. power that

  595. enables him to

  596. bring everything

  597. under his

  598. control will

  599. transform our

  600. lowly bodies

  601. so that they

  602. will be like

  603. his glorious

  604. body

  605. when you put

  606. Philippians 2

  607. and Philippians 3

  608. together

  609. we see that

  610. because of the

  611. death and

  612. resurrection of

  613. the Lord Jesus

  614. he has

  615. astonishing

  616. power to

  617. subject all

  618. things to

  619. himself

  620. this

  621. is

  622. resurrection

  623. impact

  624. that is

  625. relevant for

  626. us right now

  627. that is

  628. he rose

  629. victorious from

  630. the grave

  631. never to die

  632. again

  633. and he

  634. rules

  635. over all

  636. time and

  637. space

  638. you see it

  639. there again

  640. in verse 21

  641. by the power

  642. that enables him

  643. to bring

  644. everything

  645. under his

  646. control

  647. in one sense

  648. Jesus has the

  649. right to rule

  650. the universe

  651. because he is

  652. God

  653. not just because

  654. he died and

  655. rose again

  656. he did not

  657. have to die

  658. and rise

  659. in order to

  660. be who he

  661. is

  662. and what he

  663. is from all

  664. eternity

  665. is God

  666. and this gives

  667. him the right

  668. to exercise

  669. authority over

  670. all things

  671. but in another

  672. sense God

  673. decreed that

  674. the one

  675. who would

  676. rule in

  677. power

  678. would be a

  679. saviour who

  680. suffered with

  681. us and for

  682. us in this

  683. world

  684. the Lord and

  685. judge and

  686. saviour over

  687. all the universe

  688. was tested

  689. and found

  690. perfect through

  691. human suffering

  692. and now he

  693. is doubly

  694. suited for his

  695. role as

  696. Lord of the

  697. universe

  698. he is God

  699. by God

  700. with all the

  701. natural rights

  702. to go with

  703. that and he

  704. is saviour

  705. with purchased

  706. rights

  707. and so he

  708. can put his

  709. foot on

  710. Satan's neck

  711. and not just

  712. because of the

  713. raw divine

  714. power he has

  715. but also because

  716. he exposed

  717. himself to

  718. Satan's

  719. temptations

  720. and to

  721. Satan's

  722. biggest weapon

  723. death

  724. and he broke

  725. it on Easter

  726. Sunday

  727. he is doubly

  728. suited to rule

  729. the universe

  730. he has

  731. creator rights

  732. and saviour

  733. rights

  734. and the

  735. impact of

  736. Easter Sunday

  737. morning is

  738. that there

  739. is no higher

  740. authority

  741. there is no

  742. place or

  743. sphere or

  744. realm or

  745. dimension of

  746. existence anywhere

  747. in the universe

  748. that is not

  749. under the

  750. absolute

  751. authority

  752. of Jesus

  753. Christ

  754. and when the

  755. world in which

  756. we live

  757. doesn't look

  758. like it's under

  759. the authority

  760. of Jesus

  761. it would be

  762. wiser for us

  763. to marvel at

  764. the mystery

  765. of his ways

  766. than to

  767. question the

  768. scope of

  769. his power

  770. Christ's power

  771. pervades the

  772. universe from

  773. the largest to

  774. the smallest

  775. elements of

  776. reality

  777. no galaxy

  778. no atom

  779. no demon

  780. would stay

  781. in being

  782. without the

  783. authority of

  784. the Lord

  785. Jesus

  786. so be

  787. astonished at

  788. his power

  789. to subject

  790. all things

  791. to himself

  792. Easter Sunday

  793. is no mere

  794. symbolism of

  795. how to endure

  796. hard things

  797. in life

  798. it means that

  799. Jesus rules

  800. the universe

  801. as the name

  802. that is above

  803. every name

  804. and he does

  805. it

  806. out of love

  807. for us

  808. notice that

  809. there are two

  810. astounding

  811. implications for

  812. us in this

  813. power of the

  814. resurrected Lord

  815. Jesus

  816. they are

  817. staggering

  818. and they are

  819. filled with

  820. hope and joy

  821. and life

  822. for us

  823. verse 20

  824. our citizenship

  825. is in

  826. heaven

  827. citizenship

  828. means you

  829. belong

  830. citizenship

  831. means you

  832. are protected

  833. we take it

  834. for granted

  835. but become a

  836. refugee

  837. and be a

  838. person of

  839. no fixed

  840. abode

  841. with no one

  842. in the United

  843. Nations

  844. speak it

  845. on your

  846. behalf

  847. and see

  848. how secure

  849. you feel

  850. and our

  851. citizenship

  852. is in

  853. heaven

  854. the power

  855. of the

  856. Lord Jesus

  857. guarantees

  858. our citizenship

  859. of heaven

  860. and if you're a

  861. believer in the

  862. Lord Jesus

  863. you don't have to

  864. wait for the

  865. second coming

  866. of the Lord

  867. Jesus to know

  868. where your

  869. home is

  870. when you trust

  871. in Christ

  872. your name is

  873. sealed on the

  874. citizen roles

  875. of heaven

  876. because your

  877. king is

  878. there

  879. where he

  880. is

  881. there you

  882. have the

  883. privilege to

  884. be

  885. and so

  886. you will be

  887. with him

  888. forever

  889. and your

  890. amazement

  891. and your

  892. wonder

  893. and your

  894. awe

  895. will never

  896. cease

  897. it will only

  898. increase

  899. with him

  900. forever

  901. and ever

  902. which leads

  903. to the second

  904. implication

  905. Jesus

  906. will use

  907. his power

  908. to transform

  909. your body

  910. into a

  911. resurrected

  912. body like

  913. his

  914. Philippians

  915. 3 21

  916. the Lord

  917. Jesus Christ

  918. who by the

  919. power that

  920. enables him

  921. to bring

  922. everything

  923. under his

  924. control

  925. will transform

  926. your lowly

  927. bodies

  928. so that they

  929. will be like

  930. his glorious

  931. body

  932. all that

  933. power that

  934. Jesus has

  935. will be used

  936. to take

  937. our dead

  938. bodies

  939. and raise

  940. them from

  941. the dead

  942. no longer

  943. to be sick

  944. and disabled

  945. or frail

  946. or mentally

  947. ill or addicted

  948. or weary

  949. or tempting

  950. or tempted

  951. but

  952. rather

  953. it will

  954. be like

  955. his

  956. glorious

  957. body

  958. this is

  959. not

  960. a mere

  961. symbolic

  962. hope

  963. if you

  964. belong to

  965. Jesus

  966. Christ

  967. by trusting

  968. in him

  969. he will

  970. give you

  971. a new

  972. body

  973. fit for

  974. eternal

  975. life

  976. with him

  977. not a

  978. ghost

  979. not a

  980. spirit

  981. you'll

  982. be

  983. recognized

  984. by your

  985. mates

  986. and you

  987. will

  988. eat

  989. and drink

  990. with

  991. Jesus

  992. in the

  993. kingdom

  994. of God

  995. just like

  996. he did

  997. with his

  998. mates

  999. when he

  1000. was here

  1001. after he

  1002. rose

  1003. be

  1004. astounded

  1005. therefore

  1006. that Jesus

  1007. will use

  1008. his

  1009. infinite

  1010. authority

  1011. and power

  1012. to raise

  1013. you for

  1014. the dead

  1015. to give

  1016. you a

  1017. body like

  1018. his

  1019. that will

  1020. never wear

  1021. out

  1022. and to

  1023. live

  1024. forever

  1025. the aim

  1026. of all

  1027. this

  1028. is that

  1029. we might

  1030. be

  1031. astounded

  1032. at the

  1033. majesty

  1034. of Jesus

  1035. Christ

  1036. this

  1037. Easter

  1038. rather than

  1039. a mere

  1040. intellectual

  1041. awareness

  1042. of history

  1043. I want us

  1044. to marvel

  1045. at the

  1046. truth

  1047. and the

  1048. hope

  1049. and the

  1050. joy

  1051. of

  1052. Easter

  1053. I don't

  1054. want

  1055. it to be

  1056. a mere

  1057. take it

  1058. or leave

  1059. it

  1060. symbolism

  1061. where you

  1062. respond

  1063. after this

  1064. service

  1065. thanks for

  1066. a stimulating

  1067. service

  1068. now off

  1069. to the

  1070. Easter

  1071. egg

  1072. hunt

  1073. this is

  1074. life

  1075. transforming

  1076. this is

  1077. not just

  1078. a mere

  1079. gathering

  1080. of historical

  1081. facts

  1082. this is

  1083. a marvelling

  1084. at those

  1085. facts

  1086. and the

  1087. difference

  1088. is this

  1089. suppose

  1090. you hear

  1091. that last

  1092. year in

  1093. Chatswood

  1094. 10

  1095. children

  1096. were hit

  1097. by

  1098. cars

  1099. while

  1100. playing

  1101. it's

  1102. there

  1103. on the

  1104. news

  1105. you read

  1106. in the

  1107. paper

  1108. and you

  1109. wince

  1110. and you

  1111. think

  1112. what a

  1113. tragedy

  1114. that must

  1115. have been

  1116. really hard

  1117. for those

  1118. parents

  1119. and then

  1120. you read

  1121. the next

  1122. article

  1123. you look

  1124. at the

  1125. next bit

  1126. of news

  1127. and then

  1128. suddenly

  1129. the front

  1130. door bursts

  1131. open and

  1132. your 10

  1133. year old

  1134. daughter comes

  1135. screaming into

  1136. the house

  1137. with the

  1138. news that

  1139. it was

  1140. your 9

  1141. year old

  1142. son

  1143. has just

  1144. been hit

  1145. by a car

  1146. playing in

  1147. the front

  1148. yard

  1149. and now

  1150. the news

  1151. is different

  1152. news

  1153. the first

  1154. piece of

  1155. news was

  1156. true

  1157. you didn't

  1158. doubt it

  1159. good evidence

  1160. for it

  1161. but now

  1162. there was

  1163. a piece

  1164. of news

  1165. that goes

  1166. to the

  1167. core

  1168. of your

  1169. being

  1170. it shakes

  1171. you

  1172. everything

  1173. in you

  1174. comes alive

  1175. to this

  1176. reality

  1177. that it's

  1178. your son

  1179. it touches

  1180. your existence

  1181. it will

  1182. change

  1183. everything

  1184. in your

  1185. life

  1186. it will

  1187. break

  1188. your heart

  1189. it will

  1190. shatter

  1191. things

  1192. in you

  1193. more deeply

  1194. than you

  1195. have ever

  1196. touched

  1197. before

  1198. and so

  1199. here again

  1200. the news

  1201. of Easter

  1202. Jesus died

  1203. in your

  1204. place

  1205. for your

  1206. sin

  1207. against

  1208. God

  1209. Jesus

  1210. is risen

  1211. from the

  1212. dead

  1213. Jesus

  1214. will never

  1215. die

  1216. again

  1217. Jesus

  1218. has been

  1219. appointed

  1220. as ruler

  1221. of the

  1222. universe

  1223. and all

  1224. who trust

  1225. in him

  1226. will be

  1227. raised

  1228. like him

  1229. and live

  1230. forever

  1231. with him

  1232. my friends

  1233. I long

  1234. for you

  1235. here today

  1236. not just

  1237. to hear

  1238. that truth

  1239. as merely

  1240. provable

  1241. reports

  1242. of some

  1243. religious

  1244. claim

  1245. but as

  1246. the cry

  1247. of your

  1248. child

  1249. bursting

  1250. through

  1251. the door

  1252. it has

  1253. to do

  1254. with you

  1255. this is

  1256. your death

  1257. and your

  1258. life

  1259. and your

  1260. hope

  1261. the

  1262. resurrection

  1263. changes

  1264. everything

  1265. it did

  1266. for the

  1267. bigoted

  1268. hate

  1269. filled

  1270. proud

  1271. Paul

  1272. who

  1273. approved

  1274. of the

  1275. murder

  1276. and the

  1277. imprisonment

  1278. of

  1279. Christians

  1280. and then

  1281. he met

  1282. the

  1283. all

  1284. powerful

  1285. risen

  1286. Jesus

  1287. and

  1288. everything

  1289. changed

  1290. for him

  1291. this is

  1292. how he

  1293. puts it

  1294. in

  1295. Philippians

  1296. 3

  1297. from

  1298. verse

  1299. 10

  1300. but for

  1301. whatever

  1302. was to

  1303. my

  1304. profit

  1305. I

  1306. now

  1307. consider

  1308. loss

  1309. for the

  1310. sake

  1311. of

  1312. Christ

  1313. what

  1314. is

  1315. more

  1316. I

  1317. consider

  1318. everything

  1319. a

  1320. loss

  1321. compared

  1322. to the

  1323. surpassing

  1324. greatness

  1325. of knowing

  1326. Jesus

  1327. Christ

  1328. my

  1329. Lord

  1330. for whose

  1331. sake

  1332. I

  1333. have

  1334. lost

  1335. all

  1336. things

  1337. I

  1338. consider

  1339. them

  1340. rubbish

  1341. that I

  1342. might gain

  1343. Christ

  1344. and be found

  1345. in him

  1346. that is

  1347. through faith

  1348. in Christ

  1349. the righteousness

  1350. that comes

  1351. from God

  1352. and is

  1353. by faith

  1354. this is how

  1355. he sums up

  1356. his life

  1357. I want to

  1358. know

  1359. Christ

  1360. and the

  1361. power

  1362. of his

  1363. resurrection

  1364. and the

  1365. fellowship

  1366. of sharing

  1367. in his

  1368. sufferings

  1369. becoming

  1370. like

  1371. him

  1372. in his

  1373. death

  1374. and so

  1375. somehow

  1376. to attain

  1377. to the

  1378. resurrection

  1379. of the

  1380. dead

  1381. everything

  1382. changes

  1383. because

  1384. of the

  1385. resurrection

  1386. it is the

  1387. core of

  1388. his being

  1389. in which

  1390. he views

  1391. his life

  1392. what about

  1393. you

  1394. is your

  1395. citizenship

  1396. in heaven

  1397. have

  1398. have you

  1399. laid down

  1400. the arms

  1401. of unbelief

  1402. and rebellion

  1403. against

  1404. Christ

  1405. have you

  1406. received

  1407. the

  1408. blood

  1409. bought

  1410. amnesty

  1411. that we

  1412. celebrate

  1413. at Easter

  1414. have you

  1415. bowed the

  1416. knee of

  1417. submission

  1418. and loyalty

  1419. to the

  1420. king of

  1421. the universe

  1422. my friends

  1423. do it

  1424. today

  1425. let your

  1426. response

  1427. be a

  1428. life of

  1429. faith

  1430. and love

  1431. and joy

  1432. and worship

  1433. and join

  1434. today the

  1435. citizens of

  1436. heaven

  1437. who eagerly

  1438. await a

  1439. saviour from

  1440. there the

  1441. Lord Jesus

  1442. Christ

  1443. who by the

  1444. power that

  1445. enables him

  1446. to bring

  1447. everything

  1448. under his

  1449. control

  1450. will transform

  1451. our lowly

  1452. bodies

  1453. so that

  1454. we'll be

  1455. like his

  1456. glorious

  1457. body

  1458. Amen
