  1. Good evening, everybody. Lovely to be here with you.

  2. Oh, thank you, thank you.

  3. My identity is very secure, I want you to know.

  4. So, no, it is wonderful to give you the last of these series on identity.

  5. So let me first of all tell you a story.

  6. While walking through the forest one day,

  7. a man found a young eagle that had fallen out of its nest.

  8. He took this eagle home and he put it in his barnyard

  9. where it soon learned to eat and to behave like the chickens.

  10. One day a naturalist passed by the farm and asked,

  11. why is the king of the birds behaving and living in a barnyard with the chickens?

  12. The farmer replied that since he had given it chicken feed

  13. and trained it to be a chicken, it had never learned to fly.

  14. So, since it now behaved as a chicken, it was no longer an eagle.

  15. Still it has the heart of an eagle, said the naturalist,

  16. and can surely be taught to fly.

  17. He lifted the eagle toward the sky and he said,

  18. you belong to the sky and not to the earth.

  19. Stretch forth your wings and fly.

  20. The eagle, however, was confused.

  21. He did not know who he was.

  22. And seeing the chickens eating their food,

  23. he jumped down to be with them again.

  24. The naturalist took the eagle out of the barnyard

  25. and took him to a high mountain.

  26. There he held the king of the birds high above him

  27. and he encouraged him, saying,

  28. you are an eagle, you belong to the sky.

  29. Stretch forth your wings and fly.

  30. The eagle looked around and he looked backwards

  31. towards the barnyard and then he looked up to the sky.

  32. Then the naturalist lifted him straight towards the sun

  33. and it happened that the eagle began to tremble.

  34. Slowly he stretched out his wings

  35. and then with a triumphant cry,

  36. he soared away into the heavens.

  37. It may be that the eagle still remembers the chickens in the barnyard

  38. with nostalgia.

  39. It may even be that he occasionally visits the chickens in the barnyard.

  40. But as far as anyone knows,

  41. he has never returned to the life of a chicken.

  42. So I share this story.

  43. Just like the eagle needed to learn to live as an eagle,

  44. we as God's people need to learn to live as God's people

  45. and to fly and soar with great freedom that God has given us.

  46. We can do that if we truly understand our identity

  47. and by living in that identity that has been given to us in Christ.

  48. We saw last week that we as believers,

  49. those who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  50. then we are in Christ.

  51. We have a new identity.

  52. That Christ has given us where we have everything we need in abundance.

  53. But it's not that unusual that we might have trouble adjusting to our new identity.

  54. Just like the eagle had trouble adjusting to the fact that he was an eagle.

  55. We often go back to what we know best,

  56. what we find easiest.

  57. And sometimes that is the behaviour of our old selves

  58. rather than who we are in Christ.

  59. In today's passage, Peter is writing this letter

  60. to a group of new believers who have been scattered.

  61. They have been given new birth into a living hope in Jesus Christ,

  62. just like many of us here.

  63. But they still need this encouragement

  64. about who they are

  65. and we still need that same encouragement.

  66. Peter gives some powerful imagery in chapter 2.

  67. He explains that this new identity that we've been given,

  68. we have been given a spiritual house,

  69. a royal priesthood.

  70. We are a royal priesthood.

  71. We are a spiritual house, I'm sorry.

  72. We are a chosen people

  73. and we are God's possession.

  74. Verses 3 and 4 say,

  75. How do you feel about being described as a stone?

  76. Pretty odd for us today to be described as stones

  77. and to get all warm and fuzzy about that.

  78. But for the people in Peter's day,

  79. it was a significant term.

  80. This living stone picture would have been so real in their minds

  81. because of what they knew from the Old Testament.

  82. Daniel in Daniel 2,

  83. when he was interpreting a dream of Nebuchadnezzar,

  84. he spoke of God's kingdom being a stone.

  85. Isaiah in a vision,

  86. he said,

  87. Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,

  88. a cornerstone chosen and precious.

  89. In Psalm 118,

  90. In Psalm 118,

  91. the psalmist also spoke of a cornerstone

  92. that would bring salvation to all who believed

  93. as well as a stone that would be a stumbling block

  94. for those who reject it.

  95. And in Luke's gospel,

  96. when we see Jesus' authority is questioned,

  97. Jesus answers with the parable of the tenants,

  98. quoting that same verse from Psalms

  99. about being a rejected stone.

  100. And he was speaking about himself.

  101. You see,

  102. to the hearers of this letter,

  103. they knew full well what the terminology of a stone was.

  104. And Peter is saying that we are living stones

  105. being built into a spiritual house

  106. and Jesus is the cornerstone,

  107. the important rock

  108. that every other stone is aligned with

  109. so that this building that is being built

  110. will be straight,

  111. it will be secure,

  112. it will be strong

  113. because it's built with this cornerstone

  114. and everything is lined up with that one stone.

  115. This spiritual house is the church.

  116. It's a collective.

  117. We are not individuals working at our own identities,

  118. although we do need to do that,

  119. but we are put together

  120. as part of something grand.

  121. It is in the light of all of this rich

  122. and contested history

  123. regarding Israel's religious identity

  124. that Peter says,

  125. as you come to him,

  126. a living stone rejected by men,

  127. but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

  128. you yourselves,

  129. like living stones,

  130. are being built up as a spiritual house

  131. to be a holy priesthood,

  132. to offer spiritual sacrifices

  133. acceptable to God

  134. through Jesus Christ.

  135. These are stunning words

  136. and elevating beyond all measure.

  137. In one sentence,

  138. Peter grasps the entire wealth of Israel's identity

  139. and he applies it not only to Jesus alone,

  140. but he applies it to every man and woman and child

  141. who comes to faith in Christ.

  142. When we come to Jesus,

  143. we come to the living stone.

  144. When we come to Jesus,

  145. we come into God's kingdom.

  146. When we come to Jesus,

  147. we become God's spiritual house

  148. and holy priesthood.

  149. These phrases applied metaphorically

  150. here to Peter's early readers

  151. represent the most exalted ideas

  152. within all Judaism.

  153. After all,

  154. the spiritual house was the temple.

  155. If God was going to dwell anywhere,

  156. it's going to be in the temple.

  157. In addition,

  158. the royal priesthood

  159. consisted of those honoured ones

  160. who had the privilege of standing

  161. in the very presence of God.

  162. Yet now,

  163. following Jesus' example

  164. in usurping these ideas,

  165. Peter claims that in Christ,

  166. these truths

  167. are likewise transferred

  168. to each and every believer.

  169. Every person who is a follower of Jesus,

  170. we have those same truths

  171. applied to us.

  172. In essence,

  173. the church has become

  174. God's people

  175. and God's place

  176. in the world.

  177. Truly with these phrases,

  178. a spiritual house

  179. and a royal priesthood,

  180. Peter is raising the identity

  181. of his early readers

  182. to unimaginable heights.

  183. By way of a single metaphor,

  184. Peter proclaims

  185. that they are

  186. at the very heart

  187. and centre

  188. of God's activity

  189. in the world.

  190. They are God's building

  191. and in Christ,

  192. they are being built up

  193. into a residence

  194. intended

  195. for God's

  196. very presence.

  197. They must have been thrilled

  198. to learn that their identity

  199. was secure.

  200. They were God's special

  201. building project.

  202. We are God's

  203. special

  204. building project.

  205. How inspiring

  206. to be reminded

  207. by Peter

  208. that if you come

  209. to Jesus

  210. as God's

  211. living stone,

  212. you are at the centre

  213. of what God

  214. is doing

  215. in this world.

  216. We are God's

  217. spiritual house.

  218. The second new

  219. identification

  220. that Peter gives

  221. to the readers

  222. is the priesthood.

  223. Now Peter mentions

  224. it in verse 5

  225. and also in verse 9.

  226. The priesthood,

  227. of course,

  228. began with Aaron

  229. and it was Aaron

  230. who stood before

  231. a holy God

  232. and on behalf

  233. of the sinful people.

  234. In some respects

  235. he functioned

  236. as an intermediary

  237. between God

  238. and the world.

  239. As such,

  240. the priests

  241. were the ones

  242. most intimately

  243. acquainted

  244. with God.

  245. Now consider

  246. the impact

  247. of this verse

  248. in the light

  249. of Israel's

  250. priestly history.

  251. Peter calls

  252. all believers

  253. holy,

  254. royal,

  255. priesthood.

  256. This means

  257. that every Christian

  258. is the ultimate

  259. insider.

  260. We're not merely

  261. representatives

  262. of God

  263. in this world.

  264. We serve

  265. as God's

  266. priests

  267. before the world.

  268. No wonder

  269. Peter closes

  270. verse 10

  271. by saying

  272. once you were

  273. not a people

  274. but now

  275. you are God's

  276. people.

  277. Once

  278. you had

  279. not received

  280. mercy

  281. but now

  282. you have

  283. received

  284. mercy.

  285. What an

  286. encouraging word

  287. for those

  288. who were

  289. identified

  290. as those

  291. exiles

  292. in chapter 1

  293. verse 1.

  294. The ones

  295. who struggled

  296. with a sense

  297. of being

  298. outsiders.

  299. They now

  300. see in a fresh

  301. way that they

  302. are really

  303. very special

  304. to God

  305. indeed.

  306. I hope

  307. that these

  308. awesome truths

  309. that are put

  310. forward by

  311. Peter

  312. encourage you

  313. in your

  314. faith.

  315. Your identity

  316. in Christ

  317. is an

  318. exalted

  319. one.

  320. How did

  321. we get

  322. to be in

  323. that position?

  324. Well,

  325. verses 6

  326. and 7

  327. or parts

  328. of them,

  329. whoever

  330. believes in

  331. him will

  332. not be put

  333. to shame

  334. and in

  335. verse 7,

  336. so the

  337. honour is

  338. for you

  339. who believe.

  340. Remember

  341. one of the

  342. consequences

  343. that I spoke

  344. about two

  345. weeks ago?

  346. One of the

  347. consequences

  348. of the fall

  349. was that

  350. we inherited

  351. shame

  352. on our

  353. lives?

  354. Here,

  355. we have

  356. clearly

  357. written out

  358. for us

  359. that we

  360. will not

  361. be put

  362. to shame.

  363. This new

  364. and exalted

  365. identity

  366. is held

  367. out for

  368. all who

  369. believe that

  370. Jesus is

  371. God's

  372. ruler.

  373. Conversely,

  374. anyone who

  375. rejects Jesus

  376. as God's

  377. cornerstone

  378. shall stumble

  379. and fall.

  380. That's also

  381. made very

  382. clear.

  383. Put simply,

  384. what you

  385. and I

  386. do with

  387. Jesus

  388. will mean

  389. everything

  390. to our

  391. standing

  392. and our

  393. identity

  394. before God.

  395. Jesus

  396. alone

  397. is the

  398. full expression

  399. of God

  400. in the

  401. world.

  402. And by

  403. this,

  404. his

  405. sacrifice,

  406. he has

  407. brought us

  408. close to

  409. God.

  410. What will

  411. you do

  412. with Jesus?

  413. May you

  414. come to

  415. Jesus as

  416. God's

  417. living stone

  418. and may

  419. you experience

  420. in fresh

  421. ways your

  422. new and

  423. treasured

  424. identity in

  425. Christ.

  426. But there

  427. is more.

  428. You are a

  429. chosen people,

  430. people, some

  431. Bible versions

  432. might say that

  433. you're a

  434. chosen race.

  435. This is a

  436. corporate identity.

  437. He's talking

  438. about the

  439. church, the

  440. true Israel.

  441. But the

  442. implication is

  443. also individual

  444. because the

  445. race is not

  446. racial.

  447. The chosen

  448. race is not

  449. black or

  450. white or red

  451. or brown.

  452. the chosen

  453. race is the

  454. new people

  455. from all

  456. peoples

  457. everywhere.

  458. All

  459. colours,

  460. all cultures

  461. who are now

  462. aliens and

  463. strangers in

  464. the world.

  465. You and

  466. me.

  467. What gives

  468. us our

  469. identity is

  470. not colour

  471. but chosenness.

  472. Out from

  473. all the

  474. races we

  475. have been

  476. chosen,

  477. one at a

  478. time,

  479. not on

  480. the basis

  481. of belonging

  482. to any

  483. group at

  484. all.

  485. That's why

  486. this amazing

  487. phrase is

  488. individually

  489. very crucial

  490. for you

  491. and for

  492. me.

  493. You are

  494. part of

  495. the chosen

  496. race.

  497. So your

  498. identity is

  499. that you

  500. are chosen.

  501. God chose

  502. you.

  503. Not because

  504. of your

  505. race or

  506. for any

  507. of your

  508. qualifications.

  509. Who I am

  510. and who

  511. you are,

  512. we are

  513. chosen.

  514. We did

  515. not earn

  516. it or

  517. merit it

  518. or meet

  519. any conditions

  520. to get

  521. it.

  522. It happened

  523. before we

  524. were born.

  525. We stand

  526. in awe

  527. of it.

  528. We should

  529. tremble with

  530. joy for

  531. it.

  532. We should

  533. bow and

  534. accept it

  535. and we

  536. definitely

  537. should be

  538. living to

  539. be faithful

  540. to its

  541. purpose.

  542. We are

  543. chosen.

  544. So we

  545. are a

  546. spiritual

  547. house.

  548. We are

  549. a royal

  550. priesthood

  551. and we

  552. are chosen.

  553. But wait,

  554. there is

  555. more still?

  556. Just like

  557. the ads

  558. on TV.

  559. This is

  560. expressed

  561. in verse

  562. 9 that

  563. we are

  564. God's

  565. possession.

  566. You are

  567. a chosen

  568. people,

  569. a people

  570. belonging to

  571. God and

  572. now you

  573. are the

  574. people of

  575. God.

  576. God takes

  577. you to

  578. be his

  579. possession.

  580. You are

  581. God's

  582. inheritance.

  583. You are

  584. the ones

  585. he will

  586. spend

  587. eternity

  588. with and

  589. we with

  590. him.

  591. When God

  592. says in

  593. 2 Corinthians

  594. 6,

  595. 16,

  596. he says,

  597. I will

  598. be their

  599. God and

  600. they will

  601. be my

  602. people,

  603. my

  604. possession.

  605. What it

  606. means is

  607. I will

  608. dwell in

  609. them and

  610. walk among

  611. them.

  612. When a

  613. person comes

  614. to faith in

  615. Christ, his

  616. or her

  617. identity is

  618. not the

  619. only thing

  620. that changes.

  621. Our text

  622. says that

  623. one's calling

  624. to life

  625. does too.

  626. The latter

  627. half of

  628. verse 9

  629. says,

  630. all this

  631. occurs so

  632. that you

  633. may proclaim

  634. the praises

  635. of him who

  636. called you

  637. out of

  638. darkness

  639. into his

  640. marvellous

  641. light.

  642. Wow,

  643. what an

  644. exalted

  645. calling that

  646. is.

  647. What an

  648. exalted

  649. purpose.

  650. We now

  651. exist to

  652. proclaim the

  653. praises of

  654. God.

  655. Could

  656. anything be

  657. better than

  658. that?

  659. Are you

  660. doing that

  661. each and

  662. every day?

  663. Are you

  664. proclaiming the

  665. praises of

  666. God?

  667. I don't

  668. mean are

  669. you preaching

  670. to every

  671. person that's

  672. in your

  673. eyesight,

  674. but are you

  675. living your

  676. life with a

  677. grateful heart

  678. knowing that

  679. in everything

  680. God has

  681. blessed you

  682. with great

  683. abundance?

  684. is your

  685. heart thankful?

  686. Are you

  687. aware that

  688. you are the

  689. Lord's

  690. ambassador each

  691. and every

  692. day?

  693. Do you

  694. show humility

  695. and grace

  696. in all you

  697. do?

  698. Does your

  699. life point

  700. to Jesus?

  701. I know

  702. that I

  703. fail very

  704. frequently,

  705. but I

  706. am learning

  707. as I

  708. mature as a

  709. Christian that

  710. my identity

  711. is not

  712. shaken when

  713. I fail.

  714. I know

  715. that I'm a

  716. work in

  717. progress.

  718. I know

  719. that perfection

  720. will only

  721. arrive when

  722. Jesus returns

  723. and makes me

  724. new and fit

  725. for God's

  726. presence.

  727. In the

  728. meantime, I

  729. am very

  730. aware of

  731. what my

  732. weak spots

  733. are, and

  734. I would

  735. really encourage

  736. each of you

  737. to examine

  738. what are

  739. your weak

  740. spots,

  741. because I

  742. can guarantee

  743. you,

  744. wherever your

  745. weak spot

  746. is, that

  747. is where

  748. you're going

  749. to be

  750. tempted by

  751. Satan.

  752. So what

  753. do we do

  754. when we

  755. fail?

  756. Because we

  757. all will,

  758. this side

  759. of heaven,

  760. or what do

  761. we do when

  762. we realise

  763. that we

  764. have believed

  765. the lie

  766. that the

  767. world has

  768. told us

  769. about who

  770. we are,

  771. that we

  772. have succumbed

  773. to believing

  774. that our

  775. identity lies

  776. in things,

  777. in achievements

  778. and the

  779. like.

  780. How do we

  781. make things

  782. right when

  783. we know

  784. that Christ

  785. has given

  786. us everything

  787. in abundance

  788. for us to

  789. be secure,

  790. significant

  791. and accepted?

  792. If you

  793. catch yourself

  794. returning to

  795. the world's

  796. view of who

  797. you are,

  798. then I

  799. would encourage

  800. you, you

  801. repent

  802. immediately.

  803. Keep very

  804. short accounts

  805. with the

  806. Lord.

  807. Repent and

  808. believe the

  809. truth of

  810. who God

  811. has made

  812. you.

  813. Just like

  814. the eagle in

  815. the story at

  816. the beginning

  817. who looked

  818. back towards

  819. the barnyard,

  820. we too

  821. look back

  822. sometimes.

  823. But looking

  824. back will

  825. actually confuse

  826. you.

  827. Our eyes

  828. are to be

  829. fixed on

  830. Jesus and

  831. we are to

  832. grow and

  833. to be

  834. Christ-like

  835. in our

  836. growth.

  837. Verse 2

  838. says,

  839. like newborn

  840. babies,

  841. crave spiritual

  842. milk so

  843. that by it

  844. you may grow

  845. up in your

  846. salvation.

  847. This refers

  848. to the very

  849. things that

  850. nourish the

  851. Christian community

  852. in its growth.

  853. Knowledge of

  854. God,

  855. prayer,

  856. instruction

  857. in the

  858. gospel,

  859. faithful

  860. obedience,

  861. hearing God's

  862. word preached.

  863. The desire for

  864. spiritual nourishment

  865. needs to be the

  866. desire of the

  867. church that

  868. wants to know

  869. the Lord and

  870. to grow and

  871. to live by

  872. his will.

  873. This desire

  874. is accompanied

  875. by learning to

  876. rid yourselves

  877. thoughts of

  878. all malice

  879. or deceit,

  880. hypocrisy and

  881. envy and

  882. slander of

  883. every kind.

  884. All of

  885. these things

  886. are very

  887. common

  888. problems that

  889. arise in

  890. Christian

  891. communities or

  892. churches when

  893. spiritual things

  894. are not the

  895. desired priority

  896. in individuals'

  897. lives.

  898. things.

  899. We have been

  900. given so much

  901. in Christ and

  902. as one of my

  903. community members

  904. said this week

  905. in our group,

  906. we need to

  907. exercise our

  908. muscles.

  909. We need to

  910. have spiritual

  911. muscles and

  912. get strong.

  913. By this, we

  914. need to not

  915. only be in the

  916. word, but we

  917. need to be

  918. encouraging each

  919. other to be

  920. in the word.

  921. We need to

  922. be encouraging

  923. each other to

  924. grow spiritually,

  925. challenging each

  926. other when we

  927. sense that we

  928. have taken on a

  929. worldly view of

  930. our own identity

  931. and to grow

  932. together to be

  933. the spiritual

  934. house of the

  935. Lord.

  936. We are in a

  937. highly privileged

  938. position that

  939. each of us are

  940. individual bricks

  941. or individual

  942. stones.

  943. of the temple

  944. of God.

  945. And yet, one

  946. brick or one

  947. stone cannot

  948. sit out on the

  949. grass in the

  950. sun and build

  951. something all by

  952. itself.

  953. All of the

  954. bricks, all the

  955. stones need to be

  956. brought together

  957. with Christ as the

  958. cornerstone to

  959. build something

  960. strong, to build

  961. God's temple.

  962. people.

  963. When we look at

  964. our 2020

  965. booklet, which

  966. Tashi has, the

  967. red book, that

  968. each of you should

  969. have, and if you

  970. don't have one, I

  971. have plenty spare.

  972. But when we look at

  973. that 2020 booklet

  974. that has our core

  975. values in it, it is

  976. by no accident that

  977. our core values are

  978. directly related to

  979. this community of

  980. believers being

  981. built up in

  982. Christ.

  983. Why are we so

  984. passionate about

  985. every one of us

  986. having a secure

  987. identity in

  988. Christ?

  989. Well, I think it's

  990. twofold.

  991. Having a secure

  992. identity in

  993. Christ will

  994. confirm in

  995. yourself, but

  996. also to others

  997. that you belong

  998. to the King of

  999. Kings, the Lord

  1000. of Lords.

  1001. And the way

  1002. that you respond

  1003. to what the

  1004. world throws at

  1005. you, all those

  1006. difficult scenarios

  1007. that come in

  1008. life, because

  1009. that's what life

  1010. is about, the

  1011. way you respond

  1012. will also tell

  1013. people, and it

  1014. will be dependent

  1015. upon what your

  1016. identity is.

  1017. problems won't

  1018. go away, but

  1019. you can be very,

  1020. very confident

  1021. and secure in

  1022. knowing that

  1023. Christ is with

  1024. you.

  1025. The second

  1026. reason why we

  1027. would be very

  1028. passionate about

  1029. us understanding

  1030. our identity in

  1031. Christ is that

  1032. collectively we

  1033. reflect the

  1034. temple of God.

  1035. I've already

  1036. said this.

  1037. But we can't

  1038. be God's

  1039. people on our

  1040. own.

  1041. So it's

  1042. extremely important

  1043. that we encourage

  1044. each other in our

  1045. faith.

1046. We can do that by

  1047. meeting together,

  1048. by being on

  1049. time when we

  1050. come for corporate

  1051. worship.

  1052. It's important that

  1053. we challenge each

  1054. other when we

  1055. think that there

  1056. is ungodly

  1057. behaviour.

  1058. it means giving

  1059. each other

  1060. permission to

  1061. speak into

  1062. each other's

  1063. lives life

  1064. words.

  1065. Not negative

  1066. words, but

  1067. life words.

  1068. If you have a

  1069. brother or sister

  1070. in Christ in

  1071. this congregation

  1072. that needs life

  1073. words, you are

  1074. the one.

  1075. If you know

  1076. that, you're the

  1077. one to actually

  1078. speak those words

  1079. into their life.

  1080. in so

  1081. doing, as

  1082. scripture actually

  1083. tells us, they

  1084. will know us,

  1085. they being the

  1086. community outside

  1087. this fellowship of

  1088. God's people,

  1089. they will know us

  1090. by the way we

  1091. love each other.

  1092. This is an

  1093. awesome

  1094. responsibility,

  1095. but a necessary

  1096. one for God's

  1097. church to grow.

  1098. identity in

  1099. Christ.

  1100. Our identity

  1101. is in

  1102. Christ.

  1103. We are being

  1104. built up into

  1105. a spiritual

  1106. house, a

  1107. royal priesthood.

  1108. We are chosen

  1109. people and we

  1110. are God's very

  1111. precious possession.

  1112. All of this has

  1113. been given in

  1114. abundance so

  1115. that we can be

  1116. very secure,

  1117. significant and

  1118. accepted.

  1119. As a church

  1120. here in

  1121. Chatswood, just

  1122. part of God's

  1123. kingdom worldwide,

  1124. may we live to

  1125. glorify God in

  1126. who we are, in

  1127. what we say and

  1128. in what we do.
