  1. I've already described that the activities that we do on campus are kind of based around

  2. small group meetings and faculties.

  3. And every third week, the small group has to organise itself to do evangelism.

  4. And this particular day, I was heading to the engineering faculty, pedalling my bicycle,

  5. riding my bike between my place and the faculty.

  6. And as I went, my phone started to buzz in my pocket.

  7. And every buzz was another member of the group telling me that they couldn't make it that day.

  8. It buzzed a fair bit.

  9. And by the time I got to the faculty, the last message had arrived to confirm for me that

  10. I was going to be alone that day.

  11. No one was coming.

  12. And it's not the first time that I've had to do things on my own, because we've understood,

  13. we've realised that part of our job is the Lord sending us there to be an example of people

  14. who will stand for Jesus and who will carry on.

  15. And that day, sitting in the faculty, when the last message came through and I was alone,

  16. I sat there kind of wrestling with God, angry again, that here I was, this Australian guy

  17. who left a fantastic country to go to Italy.

  18. And a lot of Italians, they say to us, you are nuts.

  19. Why?

  20. Whatever possessed you to think about leaving Australia to come to our country?

  21. They say that all the time.

  22. They just can't believe that we've done such a dumb thing.

  23. And so I wrestled that day thinking, Lord, I've left a great country, Australia.

  24. I've come to this country.

  25. We've suffered a whole bunch of different things.

  26. And here I am again, alone, seeking to tell about Jesus to Italians when all the Italians

  27. can't turn up to do it.

  28. And I was praying and thinking, Lord, what should I do?

  29. Should I just go home?

  30. I've got an extra hour and a half up my sleeve that I didn't think I had.

  31. And then, once again, it became clear to me, no, that if the Lord Jesus is Lord of all life

  32. in Australia, he certainly is Lord of all life in Italy.

  33. And that means all the students that I can see walking to and fro in front of me while

  34. I'm sitting on that bench in the engineering faculty in Florence, he's Lord of them as well.

  35. So that means I have to speak.

  36. So I said, all right, Lord, help me.

  37. I will speak.

  38. And I started praying for the guy who was sitting there next to me.

  39. And I opened my mouth and introduced myself.

  40. And I said that I was from the GBU.

  41. And would he like to talk about Jesus?

  42. And he said, yes.

  43. And I'd love to say that after talking with that guy for an hour, he just was kneeling

  44. on the floor, you know, waiting for me to help him pray the prayer and commit his life

  45. to Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

  46. He didn't do that.

  47. In fact, he walked away fairly pumped up with his, I guess, his intelligence and his ability

  48. to rebut some of the things that I said.

  49. And in effect, I learned in that hour that he was his own God because he wasn't going

  50. to let anyone else in to mess up the scheme that he had going on.

  51. But the thing that moved me to speak and the thing that must move us to speak is the knowledge

  52. and the belief, our trust in the fact that Jesus is Lord of all the universe, there, everywhere

  53. and here.

  54. Would you join me again as we pray and seek the Holy Spirit's intervention right now in

  55. our minds and our hearts as we look at the word of God and we seek to really understand

  56. that Jesus is this Lord and Savior and we can believe him, we need to believe him and we

  57. need to speak that out.

  58. Let's pray.

  59. Father, thank you for this awesome opportunity to be together now.

  60. We pray, Holy Spirit, that you would open our hearts and our minds to the truth that

  61. is in this word, the truth about the Lord Jesus.

  62. That he really is risen, that he reigns and he will return and that we need to speak that

  63. out.

  64. Help us to not only understand these things, but to do them.

  65. And we pray it for your glory and the sake of the salvation of others.

  66. In Jesus' name.

  67. Amen.

  68. Amen.

  69. If you've got a handout, you can follow the outline that's printed there for you.

  70. The talk is entitled Believe and Speak.

  71. And we're looking just at these verses that have been read for us from 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:13–18

  72. verses 13 to 18.

  73. And the big point, like I've already said, is that God has raised this Jesus from the dead

  74. and he will raise those who trust in this risen Jesus.

  75. That's what God is urging us to believe, because it's true, and speak out.

  76. The first point there, as you can see, is why you would speak and what you would say.

  77. And essentially, it's just saying again what I've already said, that God has the power to

  78. protect and give life in Jesus Christ.

  79. That's why you would believe and that's why you would speak.

  80. It's interesting that Paul cites Psalm 116.

  81. So he's drawing back into the Old Testament to find some connection point with what he's doing

  82. and saying as he lives and as he writes to the Corinthians.

  83. Please do turn with me to Psalm 116.

  84. It's really important that we look at that together, because it helps us understand

  85. that God is faithful even in the midst of trial and turmoil

  86. that comes because of following him.

  87. Please do turn with me to Psalm 116.

  88. Where God tells us this through the psalmist.

  89. I love the Lord, for he heard my voice.

  90. He heard my cry for mercy.

  91. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

  92. And it's in a tricky situation.

  93. The cords of death entangled me.

  94. The anguish of the grave came upon me.

  95. I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

  96. Then I called on the name of the Lord.

  97. O Lord, save me.

  98. The Lord is gracious and righteous.

  99. Our God is full of compassion.

  100. The Lord protects the simple-hearted.

  101. When I was in great need, he saved me.

  102. Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

  103. For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death,

  104. my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,

  105. that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

  106. I believed.

  107. And this is the sentence that Paul quotes.

  108. And you might have a footnote similar to mine.

  109. It says,

  110. It's an awful moment in the psalmist's life.

  111. How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?

  112. I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

  113. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

  114. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

  115. O Lord, truly I am your servant.

  116. I am your servant, the son of your maidservant.

  117. You have freed me from my chains.

  118. I will sacrifice a thank-offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.

  119. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,

  120. in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

  121. Praise the Lord.

  122. The psalmist is in the midst of trouble and difficulty.

  123. And what does he do?

  124. He cries out to this God that he knows,

  125. who is powerful and faithful,

  126. to sustain him.

  127. Why would you speak and what would you say?

  128. Well, you would tell about this great God,

  129. this great powerful God.

  130. And we see the reason that Paul gives in verse 14.

  131. But I wanted to ask someone who has a loud voice

  132. to read out for us, please, verses 13 and 14.

  133. Preferably from an English Bible.

  134. Because otherwise I won't understand it.

  135. Or you could read Italian.

  136. Someone, 13 and 14?

  137. I will.

  138. Great.

  139. Loud voice, please.

  140. That's all right?

  141. Forgive you.

  142. We have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written.

  143. I believe and so I spoke.

  144. We also believe and we also speak.

  145. Knowing that he who reigns the Lord Jesus

  146. will raise us also with Jesus

  147. and bring us with you into his presence.

  148. Excellent.

  149. My version has in verse 14 because,

  150. I think Nick's version was,

  151. knowing that.

  152. But he says,

  153. we believe and we speak

  154. because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus

  155. from the dead will also raise us with Jesus

  156. and present you with us

  157. in his presence.

  158. So what they're banking on is this.

  159. God has showed that he is powerful

  160. because he's raised Jesus from the dead.

  161. And on the strength of that,

  162. they put all they have on Jesus

  163. knowing that he is powerful enough,

  164. or the one who's raised Jesus is powerful enough

  165. to raise them

  166. who've trusted the one who raised Jesus

  167. and he is powerful enough

  168. to raise those who trust in the message

  169. that they are proclaiming.

  170. I've already mentioned it,

  171. but it's a Colum Buchanan line that I'm stealing.

  172. I'll put all I have on Jesus.

  173. I will put all I have on Jesus.

  174. That's what Paul's saying.

  175. He is convinced that Jesus is risen from the dead

  176. and it's not only powerful enough for them,

  177. but it's powerful enough for everyone who trusts him.

  178. I just want to pause for a second here

  179. and make a brief observation

  180. about what this tells us regarding Jesus himself

  181. and why Jesus is so trustworthy,

  182. why Nick's song and the chorus is so cool,

  183. why Jesus is it.

  184. Because Jesus' resurrection actually confirms

  185. Jesus' identity as the eternal king,

  186. the king that God promised to David

  187. on the eternal throne of his people.

  188. If you want to in your own time,

  189. you can have a look at Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18–20

  190. verses 18 to 20,

  191. and Jesus says there in verse 18,

  192. all power, and it's arisen Jesus talking,

  193. all power in heaven and earth has been given to me.

  194. He's not saying it before his resurrection,

  195. he's saying it after.

  196. Jesus' resurrection confirms God's power

  197. to raise believers.

  198. It confirms Jesus to be true

  199. because if Jesus had not been raised,

  200. he would have been a liar.

  201. So it confirms actually Jesus' power,

  202. the power of Jesus' own words,

  203. his own resurrection,

  204. confirms that he should be believed.

  205. Jesus is trustworthy

  206. and the risen God.

  207. Close the bracket.

  208. Now, listen carefully to this.

  209. Without the resurrection,

  210. there is nothing to believe.

  211. Without the resurrection of Jesus,

  212. there is no Christianity.

  213. Without the resurrection of Jesus,

  214. Jesus is a liar.

  215. On campus,

  216. when I'm talking with people,

  217. I get to a certain point in the conversation

  218. and I say something like this.

  219. I just want to be really transparent with you

  220. and I want you to understand who we are

  221. so that you're not feeling fooled

  222. and so that you can know

  223. if you want to take this conversation further,

  224. you can or not.

  225. We're from the Gruppi Biblici Universitari,

  226. the university Bible groups.

  227. Our motto is sharing Jesus

  228. from student to student.

  229. So Jesus is at the center of everything we do.

  230. We're not trying to build a new church.

  231. We're not trying to create a new institution.

  232. We don't want to establish

  233. a new student group on campus

  234. and really,

  235. we don't care about the GBU.

  236. What we want to talk to you about

  237. is Jesus

  238. and we want to talk to you about

  239. one thing about Jesus.

  240. Do you think he's alive?

  241. Do you think he's risen?

  242. And because I'm a foreigner

  243. and I've had to learn

  244. the Italian language,

  245. I kind of muck around a bit saying,

  246. I'm using the conditional language here, right?

  247. I'm using the conditional tense.

  248. If Jesus is alive,

  249. then it changes everything.

  250. If Jesus is alive,

  251. then he has the solution

  252. to our common problem.

  253. He's overcome death.

  254. But if Jesus is not alive,

  255. then

  256. I'd be happy to go back to Australia yesterday

  257. and stay there

  258. and live there

  259. and die there.

  260. But if Jesus really is alive,

  261. I will go wherever God wants me to go

  262. because if it's good for me

  263. and it really is true,

  264. then it's good for you

  265. and it's good for everybody.

  266. It's important in Italy

  267. that we talk about

  268. the resurrection of Jesus

  269. because otherwise

  270. Jesus is just left

  271. as one of

  272. a hundred,

  273. if not a thousand,

  274. other gods and saints

  275. and lesser deities.

  276. He's someone who got close.

  277. But who knows

  278. if he got close enough?

  279. Good guy.

  280. Top guy.

  281. But

  282. is he the risen Lord

  283. of all the earth

  284. in the mind of the average Italian?

  285. No.

  286. He's not.

  287. So he doesn't have the power

  288. to save if he's not risen.

  289. He can't be saved

  290. if he's not Lord.

  291. It's important in Italy.

  292. It's important here too

  293. where you live.

  294. The guy who dropped off the car

  295. that we're currently using,

  296. we got talking

  297. and it turns out

  298. that he grew up

  299. in country Australia

  300. having a Roman Catholic experience.

  301. as he grew.

  302. Convinced that God was there

  303. but doesn't really know

  304. how going to Mass

  305. makes him any closer

  306. to that God

  307. that he knows is there

  308. but can't really be sure

  309. how to connect with.

  310. And I said to him,

  311. of course it came out

  312. that we were in Italy.

  313. He was doing a favor

  314. for my brother-in-law

  315. giving us this car

  316. so that he didn't really

  317. know much about us.

  318. And I said,

  319. we're missionaries in Italy.

  320. He said,

  321. wow.

  322. And in the course

  323. of conversation

  324. I said,

  325. you know what the really

  326. big deal is

  327. for me being a missionary

  328. or being a Christian?

  329. He said,

  330. no, what's that?

  331. Well,

  332. the kicker for me

  333. is that Jesus is risen.

  334. Because if he's not,

  335. then I'd love to forget it

  336. because it makes my life

  337. a great deal more difficult

  338. being a missionary in Italy.

  339. But if he's alive,

  340. that changes everything.

  341. And this guy said to me,

  342. yeah,

  343. you know,

  344. I've never thought about it

  345. like that before.

  346. Start thinking about it.

  347. But what about you?

  348. What about you?

  349. Because often we can be confused

  350. as Christians.

  351. And we might not be super clear

  352. about what the centre

  353. of Christianity is.

  354. And this is what I meant.

  355. There was a meeting

  356. that I had one time

  357. with a key student

  358. as part of the GBU group.

  359. And the lights were starting

  360. to come on for me

  361. about what I should be doing

  362. and what should be

  363. some of the key things

  364. that I should be doing

  365. with students.

  366. And I said to him,

  367. look,

  368. if I give you two minutes

  369. to share the central message

  370. of Christianity with me,

  371. what are you going to say?

  372. And what are you going to say

  373. with your friends?

  374. And I said,

  375. would you mind doing that

  376. just as a bit of an exercise?

  377. It's not a test.

  378. He said, yep, yep.

  379. I said, right,

  380. time starts now.

  381. Stop.

  382. I said, thanks.

  383. Can I just reflect

  384. something back to you?

  385. I said, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  386. I said, you didn't mention Jesus.

  387. He's like,

  388. oh, yeah, right.

  389. But not only did he not

  390. mention Jesus,

  391. the resurrection

  392. was nowhere in sight.

  393. Paul's big point here,

  394. resurrection,

  395. game on.

  396. No resurrection.

  397. Forget it.

  398. If I can borrow something

  399. from the circus in Rome.

  400. What about you?

  401. What do you say

  402. when you've got two minutes

  403. to share the message

  404. of Christianity

  405. with people you know?

  406. And I'm challenging about this

  407. because it's become obvious

  408. to me that we need

  409. to really understand

  410. that the resurrection of Jesus

  411. changes everything.

  412. And you need to understand

  413. that too,

  414. and we'll see why.

  415. Because without this difference,

  416. without the resurrection

  417. of Jesus,

  418. Christianity is just like

  419. any other religion.

  420. Just a set of rules,

  421. kind of some good examples,

  422. but it goes nowhere

  423. in the end

  424. because it has no eternal value.

  425. There's no guarantee

  426. that by doing Christian stuff,

  427. you're going to actually

  428. overcome death

  429. and have eternal life.

  430. Without the resurrection,

  431. Christianity is just like

  432. any other religion,

  433. but because of the resurrection,

  434. there is believing hope.

  435. It changes everything.

  436. And in keeping with

  437. the title of this talk,

  438. Believe and Speak,

  439. it means not only

  440. is it something worth believing,

  441. but it's worth speaking about.

  442. That's why you would speak

  443. and that's what you would say.

  444. You would talk about

  445. Jesus' resurrection

  446. and it's no mistake

  447. that Paul talks about that here.

  448. I'd invite you to study

  449. the book of Acts again

  450. in your own time

  451. and just see how much

  452. they talk about the resurrection.

  453. They don't talk a whole bunch

  454. about the crucifixion.

  455. They talk much more

  456. about the resurrection

  457. because that's the thing

  458. that confirms that Jesus

  459. really should be listened to

  460. and that his death

  461. actually did what

  462. it should have done.

  463. And Paul goes on,

  464. the goal of what he's doing

  465. is also to bless others

  466. and glorify God.

  467. This is the second point.

  468. We've already looked at,

  469. haven't we,

  470. that we've established

  471. that he refers to the psalmist

  472. in Psalm 116

  473. because it really sums up

  474. what they are experiencing.

  475. When you read from

  476. the start of chapter 4,

  477. you see he's talking about

  478. trials and suffering

  479. and being perplexed,

  480. being crushed.

  481. And this is because

  482. of following Jesus.

  483. But he wants to keep

  484. on telling others

  485. about Jesus

  486. for their sake

  487. that they might be blessed

  488. and for the glory of God.

  489. Can someone read up

  490. verse 15 please?

  491. It doesn't matter

  492. what version it is.

  493. Verse 15 please.

  494. Thank you.

  495. So he says,

  496. we're going to keep

  497. doing this

  498. and as we do it,

  499. it's for your benefit

  500. because as they keep

  501. preaching Christ,

  502. the grace of God,

  503. the news of God's

  504. unmerited favor,

  505. the news of God's

  506. mercy goes out

  507. and the people

  508. who hear it

  509. and they believe it,

  510. they're brought in.

  511. And the effect

  512. in their life

  513. is one of being

  514. overjoyed

  515. at being released

  516. from the uncertainty

  517. of death

  518. and the fear of death.

  519. This thanksgiving

  520. at knowing

  521. that there is a God

  522. and that God

  523. loves them

  524. and they can know

  525. that God

  526. and they can be

  527. connected to that God

  528. forever.

  529. and the joy

  530. that they experience

  531. and the release,

  532. the freedom from sin

  533. and the liberation

  534. from this uncertainty

  535. and God's judgment

  536. wells up in them

  537. as thanksgiving.

  538. But that's pretty good.

  539. That's a personal effect

  540. for the people

  541. who are receiving

  542. Jesus Christ as Lord

  543. but what it does

  544. is glorify God.

  545. So what happens

  546. when a person

  547. is actually hearing

  548. about Jesus

  549. being the risen Lord

  550. of the universe

  551. and accepting that

  552. they are being brought

  553. into a worship

  554. of God

  555. and it works like this.

  556. As Christ is proclaimed

  557. his truthfulness

  558. which shows itself

  559. in actually being raised again

  560. it points to the fact

  561. that there is a God

  562. and that God is true

  563. and he's eternal

  564. and he's loving.

  565. He cares about right and wrong

  566. and he cares about you.

  567. And in all that process

  568. God goes

  569. that's right.

  570. That's what I'm like.

  571. And it's only right

  572. that you should understand me

  573. as that right,

  574. loving,

  575. holy God

  576. who's shown himself

  577. in the Lord Jesus

  578. and I want to bring you in.

  579. Come in.

  580. God is glorified

  581. and Paul is,

  582. he wants to be on that train.

  583. He wants to be with it.

  584. He wants to be on that program.

  585. He wants to keep that happening

  586. and he will not take a backward step.

  587. Cherie is a woman

  588. that Sarah has been meeting with

  589. over the last couple of years now

  590. and Sarah shared a little bit

  591. of that story this morning.

  592. Cherie is someone

  593. who has struggled

  594. with depression

  595. and great uncertainty

  596. relating to

  597. life after death,

  598. judgment.

  599. But as Sarah

  600. has been able to sit

  601. and be very patient with her

  602. opening the scriptures

  603. and studying Jesus together,

  604. getting to know Jesus together,

  605. Cherie has been liberated.

  606. And it's a beautiful thing

  607. to see in the life

  608. of a person

  609. when they really do understand

  610. how God has made peace

  611. through the blood of Jesus

  612. and how that's been confirmed

  613. by his resurrection.

  614. And the joy comes out.

  615. The freedom is there.

  616. The clarity of mind

  617. actually occurs

  618. and it's like,

  619. whoa,

  620. I'm seeing now.

  621. And this has been,

  622. we've been watching this

  623. and praying for this

  624. in Cherie's life.

  625. A brother in our,

  626. in my Bible study group,

  627. church Bible study group

  628. in Florence,

  629. I think summed it up

  630. really well

  631. when we were studying Acts

  632. one night

  633. and he said,

  634. you know,

  635. it really seems to me

  636. that evangelism

  637. is much more

  638. like giving a gift.

  639. Telling Jesus

  640. is much more

  641. about giving a gift

  642. rather than some crazy thing

  643. that we really feel

  644. burdened by

  645. and we can never

  646. really get to doing.

  647. And I think he's right

  648. because we're seeing it in Paul.

  649. He won't take a backward step.

  650. He will keep going

  651. because he wants

  652. to give that gift.

  653. That gift has come to him

  654. and he didn't deserve it.

  655. He wasn't looking for it.

  656. He didn't want to take it.

  657. God said,

  658. here it is.

  659. Jesus says it to him

  660. on the road.

  661. He receives it

  662. and he knows

  663. he can never give it away.

  664. He's not going to lose it

  665. but he wants to give it.

  666. He wants to make sure

  667. that other people

  668. get it as well.

  669. Italy is a place

  670. that needs that gift.

  671. And I think Australia

  672. is not far behind it.

  673. We've got 0.2%

  674. of people

  675. who are non-Roman Catholic

  676. Christians in Italy.

  677. Australia,

  678. I don't know,

  679. 5, 6%

  680. that might kind of

  681. fall into that category.

  682. believers

  683. who are in churches.

  684. But there's this

  685. great confusion

  686. in Italy

  687. because Jesus

  688. is not Lord.

  689. He's not presented

  690. as who he actually is

  691. and people are left

  692. in their confusion,

  693. in their fear.

  694. But it's a question

  695. for us,

  696. isn't it?

  697. Are we speaking it out?

  698. Are we being led

  699. to the same thing

  700. that filled Paul's heart

  701. and his life

  702. as he kind of captures it

  703. in verse 15?

  704. He's not going to stop it.

  705. Or this is for your benefit.

  706. And the final point

  707. I've got

  708. is the reason

  709. to keep believing

  710. and speaking

  711. is because this is

  712. an eternal reality.

  713. Look down again

  714. with me please

  715. at the passage

  716. from verses 16 to 18

  717. and I'll read this time.

  718. I think this is a really

  719. awesome reality check

  720. for two reasons.

  721. When we look at the contrasts

  722. in these verses

  723. we see on the one hand

  724. a whole bunch

  725. of difficult stuff.

  726. He talks about losing heart.

  727. He says we do not lose heart

  728. but he's talking about that

  729. because it's pretty easy

  730. to start thinking

  731. oh I'm just not sure.

  732. I don't know if I can keep going.

  733. I'm taking the knocks.

  734. He talks about wasting away.

  735. It's kind of the opposite

  736. of all the advertising

  737. you see around.

  738. It strikes us really

  739. in a big way

  740. when we come back to Australia

  741. and then when we return

  742. to Italy.

  743. The Italians are really

  744. into well-being.

  745. Skin, appearance, beauty.

  746. Being thin.

  747. Not being too fat.

  748. And they talk about it

  749. all the time.

  750. Come back to Australia

  751. and it's kind of like

  752. whoa it seems like

  753. Australia's kind of

  754. going down the Italian path.

  755. Paul's not talking about

  756. going to the gym

  757. and he's not talking

  758. about his own well-being.

  759. He's not talking about

  760. the tablets that he can take

  761. to pump himself up.

  762. He's actually talking

  763. about the fact that

  764. they are wasting away

  765. outwardly.

  766. And he talks about

  767. troubles.

  768. That's on one side.

  769. That's the reality check

  770. of the effect

  771. of following Jesus

  772. and the effect

  773. of being involved

  774. in the ministry

  775. of telling out Jesus.

  776. The other side

  777. he says,

  778. have a look again.

  779. Verse 16.

  780. We're wasting away

  781. outwardly yet inwardly

  782. we're being renewed

  783. day by day.

  784. We have light

  785. and momentary troubles

  786. but they're achieving

  787. for us an eternal glory

  788. that far outweighs them all.

  789. So what do we do?

  790. We don't get weighed down

  791. by thinking about

  792. all the temporary things

  793. but we look for

  794. what is unseen,

  795. what is eternal.

  796. That is the risen Jesus

  797. and what he promises.

  798. The great powerful God

  799. who could raise

  800. this Jesus from the dead

  801. and who will raise

  802. from the dead

  803. those who believe

  804. in this risen Jesus.

  805. In the six weeks

  806. that we've been back

  807. in Australia,

  808. so far I've attended

  809. two funerals.

  810. I've been quite,

  811. two very different funerals.

  812. The first,

  813. the wife of Richard Chin

  814. who is the AFES

  815. national director,

  816. Bronwyn.

  817. She died about

  818. three or four weeks ago

  819. and then most recently

  820. a family friend.

  821. He died at the age

  822. of about 72

  823. and sitting in those funerals

  824. it was a massive

  825. reality check.

  826. It's pretty simple

  827. isn't it?

  828. The message of a funeral

  829. often is that

  830. this life is nothing.

  831. We can't hang on

  832. to these things

  833. to make us live forever.

  834. It doesn't work that way.

  835. Like Ecclesiastes said,

  836. a funeral is a good place

  837. to hang out

  838. because it's a really

  839. good wake-up call.

  840. It's a very good

  841. wake-up call.

  842. And Paul is saying

  843. in the midst of

  844. all this stuff,

  845. all this trouble,

  846. all this body

  847. wasting away,

  848. it's a reminder

  849. he's drawn back

  850. to ask why

  851. and he's pointed

  852. back to the risen Jesus.

  853. And he must

  854. be involved

  855. in this news

  856. going out.

  857. I want to just

  858. leave you with

  859. this one last challenge

  860. and you can pray

  861. it for me as well.

  862. My challenge is this.

  863. There's a danger

  864. for us

  865. if we're already

  866. following this risen Jesus,

  867. the longer we wait

  868. to speak out

  869. what we believe

  870. and what we know

  871. about him,

  872. the further away

  873. our opportunities

  874. will be

  875. to tell others

  876. about him.

  877. I've seen this

  878. in Italy

  879. and I know it

  880. to be true here

  881. because I've

  882. experienced it myself.

  883. This is what

  884. I'm talking about.

  885. For evangelical

  886. Christians in Italy,

  887. like I've already said,

  888. it can be very difficult

  889. to actually live

  890. in this massive

  891. great ocean

  892. of people

  893. who don't understand

  894. who you are

  895. and they don't really

  896. care for who you are.

  897. And the church,

  898. as much as it's

  899. God's blessing,

  900. can become a place

  901. where people really

  902. take very severe,

  903. deep refuge.

  904. It's kind of like

  905. the lifeboat.

  906. They've been hauled

  907. into it

  908. and the last place

  909. they want to go

  910. back into

  911. is the water

  912. that they've just

  913. been rescued from.

  914. But the challenge

  915. with that is

  916. they forget

  917. why they're there

  918. and they just

  919. become a club.

  920. They enjoy

  921. all the benefits

  922. of that club

  923. but they forget

  924. about the founder

  925. and that it's

  926. up to him.

  927. And I think

  928. people can be left

  929. doing this.

  930. They sit around

  931. thinking

  932. about what

  933. they think

  934. other people

  935. think.

  936. It's a bit

  937. tricky that.

  938. Sitting around

  939. thinking about

  940. what they think

  941. other people

  942. think.

  943. And this is how

  944. it goes.

  945. Ah, they hate

  946. Christians.

  947. They don't want

  948. to know.

  949. They're not

  950. interested.

  951. They're going

  952. to kill me.

  953. And in my

  954. experience

  955. that's not

  956. true.

  957. They just

  958. don't know

  959. Christians.

  960. They don't

  961. know Jesus.

  962. They really

  963. want to

  964. understand.

  965. But the

  966. longer we

  967. wait, the

  968. bigger the

  969. wall and

  970. the less

  971. ready we

  972. are to

  973. speak.

  974. And I

  975. think Paul's

  976. encouragement to

  977. us, to you

  978. tonight, to me

  979. tonight, to our

  980. evangelical brothers

  981. and sisters in

  982. Italy, is to

  983. speak it out.

  984. Is to get back

  985. to the fact that

  986. Jesus really is

  987. risen and that

  988. there's much more

  989. going on than

  990. meets the eye in

  991. being a Christian.

  992. It can look pretty

  993. poor on the

  994. outside, but the

  995. eternal reality is

  996. astounding.

  997. Where are you at

  998. with Jesus?

  999. Where am I at

  1000. with Jesus?

  1001. Are you really

  1002. convinced that he's

  1003. risen?

  1004. What's going to

1005. keep you going as a

  1006. Christian, but what's

1007. going to move you to

  1008. come and be in

  1009. Italy with us?

  1010. when you're on

  1011. your own?

  1012. The Italians

  1013. aren't there, but

  1014. Jesus is there, and

  1015. you're there.

  1016. That's enough.

  1017. Speak it out.

  1018. If we believe it,

  1019. we'll speak it out.

  1020. And I want to

  1021. encourage you to

  1022. think about how you

  1023. might do that this

  1024. week and talk to

  1025. each other about how

  1026. that's going.

  1027. Let's pray.

  1028. Hallelujah, Father,

  1029. thank you so much

  1030. for the chance

  1031. once again to look

  1032. into the reality

  1033. of the Lord Jesus.

  1034. Thank you, Father

  1035. God, for calling

  1036. your servant Paul.

  1037. Thank you, Lord

  1038. Jesus, for calling

  1039. him, for filling

  1040. him with the Holy

  1041. Spirit and testifying

  1042. and giving him such

  1043. a great understanding

  1044. that, Lord Jesus,

  1045. you really are

  1046. risen, that he was

  1047. never going to take

  1048. a backward step.

  1049. Please help us to

  1050. examine our hearts

  1051. and our minds and

  1052. understand whether we

  1053. really believe that

  1054. you are risen, Lord

  1055. Jesus, or whether

  1056. we've got doubts, and

  1057. please help us deal

  1058. with those doubts.

1059. And we pray that you

1060. would help us to speak

  1061. out the truth about

  1062. you, Lord Jesus.

1063. And I pray for your

  1064. Italian people, that

  1065. they would do the

  1066. same thing and help

1067. us to be in it

  1068. together, we ask in

  1069. Jesus' name.

  1070. Amen.
