  1. Well, good evening, everyone.

  2. If you haven't got a Bible in front of you,

  3. then you need to get one.

  4. And there are some up the back,

  5. just out there in the foyer.

  6. Let me be frank with you.

  7. If you don't have a Bible, what I'm going to say

  8. is going to get really confusing very quickly.

  9. And you need to follow along with me.

  10. I say that because I've been wrestling with this text all week.

  11. And up until five minutes ago,

  12. I'm still wrestling with this text.

  13. And so we need God's help to see what can't be seen.

  14. So let's pray that we might be encouraged

  15. and we might not lose heart.

  16. Father God, I pray that as we look at your word now,

  17. that you might bring clarity to the confusion.

  18. We pray that you would help us to see that which is unseen.

  19. And that in seeing that,

  20. and even just getting a small glimpse of it,

  21. that it would cause us not to lose heart

  22. as your disciples seeking to proclaim the lordship of Christ

  23. so that everyone might bow their knee

  24. and confess with their tongue

  25. that Jesus is in fact Lord.

  26. And so Lord, spirit,

  27. we pray for the global task.

  28. In the name of the Lord Jesus.

  29. Amen.

  30. I've developed quite a bad habit recently.

  31. While I'm watching a movie on TV,

  32. I grab my phone

  33. and I look up the movie in Wikipedia

  34. and read the plot summary.

  35. And so very early on in the movie,

  36. I know how the movie ends.

  37. The negative side is that it spoils the end of the movie,

  38. especially if there's some unexpected twist.

  39. And sometimes there is.

  40. In fact, I was looking at the TV guide last night,

  41. wondering whether I would watch a movie,

  42. looked at the plot summary,

  43. went, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.

  44. And then right at the end,

  45. something happened.

  46. I went, oh, that'd be good,

  47. but it's too late now.

  48. I know what's going to happen.

  49. The positive side of it

  50. is that every little throwaway line

  51. and statement and facial expression

  52. and random event makes sense.

  53. First time up.

  54. The other positive side

  55. is that I don't waste an hour or two of my life

  56. on a dud movie

  57. and I get a little bit more sleep.

  58. So I feel like

  59. that I need to do something similar now

  60. to help us understand

  61. 2 Corinthians 4 and 5,

  62. which is our focus

  63. for mission month this year.

  64. If we go to the end of the letter,

  65. it helps us understand the beginning

  66. and especially what's happening

  67. in these chapters.

  68. So you need your Bible

  69. and flick over.

  70. Chapter 10,

  71. Paul starts to, if you like,

  72. pull the curtain back

  73. on the reason that he has penned this letter.

  74. He's defending his ministry

  75. against some people

  76. who have commended themselves

  77. to this church at Corinth.

  78. It would seem that they're boasting

  79. a lot about themselves.

  80. Their ministry achievements

  81. and their spiritual experiences

  82. and their successes

  83. and stuff like that.

  84. And in the process,

  85. they're rubbishing Paul

  86. as if Paul's not the real deal,

  87. that they're superior to Paul.

  88. And so in chapter 11, verse 5,

  89. all's revealed who these people are.

  90. He says,

  91. I do not think,

  92. this is Paul speaking,

  93. I do not think that I'm in the least inferior

  94. to those super apostles.

  95. And so there they are.

  96. These are the people

  97. that Paul has been writing about.

  98. Right from the beginning of the letter,

  99. the super apostles.

  100. And he uses that term quite sarcastically

  101. because while he's an apostle,

  102. these guys have elevated themselves

  103. as super apostles

  104. over the top of every other apostle.

  105. These guys are the real deal,

  106. if you like.

  107. And so these super apostles

  108. are on the forefront of Paul's mind

  109. as he is penning this letter

  110. and including these chapters,

  111. obviously in four and five

  112. that we are focusing on.

  113. It seems that these super apostles

  114. were professional speakers

  115. who got paid lots of money

  116. for being impressive people.

  117. They were eloquent.

  118. They were loud.

  119. They were funny.

  120. They promised the world.

  121. They were successful.

  122. They were beautiful.

  123. They were well-dressed.

  124. They were sort of like

  125. the got-it-all-together types,

  126. if you like.

  127. The only thing I could think of

  128. was maybe a Tony Robbins,

  129. if you ever know who that guy is.

  130. If you don't, Google him

  131. and you'll soon understand what I mean.

  132. People looked out to them.

  133. They wanted to be like them,

  134. like these super apostles.

  135. They had the kind of lives

  136. and lifestyles

  137. that make you envious.

  138. And Paul's great defense

  139. of his ministry

  140. is at the end of chapter 11

  141. where he joins in

  142. on their boasting.

  143. He draws a big breath

  144. and he starts to say

  145. the sort of things

  146. that he hates to hear.

  147. And he starts with his heritage

  148. in verse 22 of chapter 11.

  149. Are they Hebrews?

  150. So am I.

  151. Are these guys Israelites?

  152. Me too.

  153. Are they Abraham's attendants?

  154. Got that one.

  155. And then he makes a bold claim

  156. about himself

  157. against the super apostles.

  158. This is where he draws the line,

  159. if you like,

  160. in verse 23.

  161. Are they servants of Christ?

  162. And he's sort of like

  163. a little bit of a sideline here.

  164. He goes,

  165. I'm just mad when I say this.

  166. And then he comes back in

  167. and he says,

  168. are they servants of Christ?

  169. I am more.

  170. That's a pretty big

  171. sort of line in the sand

  172. to draw at that point.

  173. And then

  174. what he does is

  175. having declared

  176. that he is in fact

  177. the genuine apostle,

  178. that he is

  179. the genuine servant of Christ.

  180. At this point,

  181. you would expect Paul

  182. to go on

  183. and give his resume

  184. like the super apostles

  185. and talk about

  186. his successes,

  187. his spiritual experiences

  188. and everything

  189. that makes him impressive

  190. and more impressive

  191. than the super apostles.

  192. But instead,

  193. he talks about

  194. his sufferings,

  195. his losses

  196. and his defeats.

  197. Look at what he says.

  198. I have worked much harder,

  199. been imprisoned more frequently,

  200. been flogged more severely,

  201. been exposed to death

  202. again and again.

  203. Five times I received

  204. from the Jews

  205. the 40 lashes minus one.

  206. Three times I was beaten

  207. with rods.

  208. Once I was stoned.

  209. Three times I was shipwrecked.

  210. I spent a night and day

  211. in the open sea.

  212. I've been constantly

  213. on the move.

  214. I've been in danger

  215. from rivers,

  216. in danger from bandits,

  217. in danger from my own countrymen,

  218. in danger from Gentiles,

  219. in danger from the city,

  220. in danger in the country,

  221. in danger at sea

  222. and in danger from false brothers.

  223. I have labored and toiled

  224. and have often gone without sleep.

  225. I have known hunger and thirst

  226. and have often gone without food.

  227. I have been cold and naked

  228. and besides everything else,

  229. I face daily the pressure

  230. of my concern

  231. for all the churches.

  232. Who is weak

  233. and I do not feel weak.

  234. Who is led into sin

  235. and I do not inwardly burn.

  236. He says,

  237. that's what makes me

  238. the real deal.

  239. There is my CV

  240. about genuine

  241. authentic

  242. apostleship.

  243. The biggest issue

  244. for the super apostles

  245. and this church of Corinth

  246. who have been swayed

  247. by the super apostles

  248. was not primarily

  249. about Paul's teaching

  250. but about Paul's lifestyle.

  251. Paul's response

  252. is that his lifestyle

  253. is characteristic

  254. of the way of the cross,

  255. of a life of faith,

  256. of following his saviour Jesus.

  257. And so that's the perspective

  258. that he wants us to have

  259. as we look

  260. at chapters 4 and 5.

  261. That is,

  262. he wants us to have

  263. clay pot,

  264. jars of clay,

  265. takeaway containers,

  266. expectations of life

  267. as a disciple of Jesus.

  268. If we understand

  269. with clarity

  270. that we are jars of clay,

  271. then I think

  272. what Paul's saying is

  273. that if we have

  274. that expectation,

  275. it will help us

  276. not to lose heart

  277. in the global task

  278. of proclaiming

  279. the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  280. Clear expectations

  281. and not losing heart

  282. are in fact put together

  283. in the passage

  284. that you looked at

  285. last week

  286. in chapter 4,

  287. verse 16.

  288. Have a look at it.

  289. Therefore,

  290. we do not lose heart.

  291. So,

  292. we don't lose heart.

  293. That's what he wants.

  294. Though outwardly

  295. we are wasting away

  296. clay pot,

  297. yet inwardly

  298. we are being renewed

  299. day by day.

  300. We don't lose heart

  301. even though

  302. we are wasting away

  303. outwardly

  304. because

  305. we are being renewed

  306. inwardly

  307. day by day.

  308. We don't lose heart

  309. even though the body

  310. is falling apart

  311. because

  312. inwardly being renewed

  313. day by day.

  314. Inward renewal.

  315. That is the key

  316. to not losing heart.

  317. And how does that

  318. inward renewal

  319. day by day happen?

  320. He tells us

  321. in verse 18.

  322. We fix our eyes

  323. not on what

  324. is seen

  325. but on what

  326. is unseen.

  327. Paul's renewed

  328. heart

  329. to pursue

  330. God's global

  331. agenda

  332. to keep

  333. surrendering

  334. his life

  335. to the Lord

  336. Jesus Christ

  337. and his

  338. priorities life

  339. comes

  340. from something

  341. very strange.

  342. It comes

  343. from looking

  344. at what

  345. he can't

  346. see.

  347. As verse

  348. 18 says

  349. the things

  350. he can see

  351. are temporal

  352. the things

  353. he can't

  354. see

  355. are eternal

  356. and it's

  357. gazing

  358. on the

  359. eternal

  360. things

  361. that means

  362. that he is

  363. inwardly renewed

  364. and encouraged

  365. and not losing

  366. heart.

  367. The summary

  368. statement

  369. I think

  370. is in chapter

  371. 4 verse 17.

  372. for our

  373. light and

  374. momentary

  375. troubles

  376. those he can

  377. see

  378. those he can

  379. feel

  380. those he can

  381. touch

  382. are achieving

  383. for us

  384. an eternal

  385. glory

  386. that far

  387. outweighs

  388. them all

  389. that he

  390. can't see.

  391. In other

  392. words

  393. the unseen

  394. things that

  395. Paul looks

  396. at for

  397. inner renewal

  398. is the

  399. immense

  400. weight of

  401. glory

  402. that is being

  403. prepared for

  404. him

  405. not just

  406. after

  407. but through

  408. and by

  409. the wasting

  410. away of

  411. his body

  412. in the

  413. pursuit

  414. of God's

  415. glory.

  416. That is

  417. there is a

  418. correlation

  419. between the

  420. decay of

  421. Paul's body

  422. in the

  423. service of

  424. the Lord

  425. Jesus

  426. and the

  427. display of

  428. Paul's glory

  429. for all

  430. eternity.

  431. the decaying

  432. of his

  433. body was

  434. not

  435. meaningless.

  436. The pain

  437. the pressure

  438. the frustration

  439. and affliction

  440. it's not

  441. happening in

  442. vain.

  443. They are not

  444. causing him to

  445. lose heart

  446. because when

  447. Paul is

  448. hurting

  449. he fixes

  450. his eyes

  451. not on how

  452. heavy the

  453. hurt is

  454. but on how

  455. heavy the

  456. glory will be

  457. because of

  458. the hurt

  459. in the

  460. pursuit of

  461. the Lord

  462. Jesus.

  463. Now that

  464. bit is

  465. crucial for

  466. us to

  467. get.

  468. Because when

  469. we look at

  470. Paul's life

  471. of surrender

  472. to the

  473. Lord Jesus

  474. there is a

  475. very significant

  476. threat here.

  477. If you

  478. choose the

  479. way of

  480. surrender to

  481. Jesus

  482. then the

  483. great threat

  484. is the

  485. loss of

  486. everything

  487. precious.

  488. When you

  489. look at the

  490. list of

  491. what Paul

  492. suffered

  493. because of

  494. the gospel

  495. because of

  496. God's

  497. global agenda

  498. of the

  499. gospel going

  500. to the

  501. ends of

  502. the earth

  503. the great

  504. threat to

  505. us is

  506. the loss

  507. of everything

  508. precious

  509. everything

  510. that is

  511. most precious

  512. and that is

  513. our life.

  514. it's a

  515. genuine threat.

  516. It's a

  517. genuine threat.

  518. Anyone

  519. want to

  520. lose their

  521. life?

  522. No hands

  523. go up.

  524. I don't

  525. think you

  526. need to

  527. dwell that

  528. point.

  529. I don't

  530. want to

  531. lose my

  532. life.

  533. I had a

  534. great time

  535. today.

  536. After church

  537. sat on the

  538. deck of

  539. morning tea

  540. there and

  541. just discussed

  542. this passage

  543. with a couple

  544. of people and

  545. it was awesome.

  546. From that I

  547. walked straight

  548. over.

  549. we had a

  550. bunch of

  551. people for

  552. lunch and

  553. we sat

  554. down to

  555. roast lamb

  556. and we

  557. talked and

  558. it was heaps

  559. of fun and

  560. my lovely

  561. wife made

  562. it and I

  563. love her

  564. dearly.

  565. My kids

  566. are adorable.

  567. They are

  568. an absolute

  569. hoot.

  570. Basically

  571. all the

  572. time.

  573. Last week

  574. I was

  575. visiting Hong

  576. Kong,

  577. meeting new

  578. people,

  579. seeing new

  580. places and

  581. to lose all

  582. of those

  583. things.

  584. A threat.

  585. And so

  586. a life of

  587. surrender to

  588. Jesus looks

  589. like a real

  590. threat.

  591. He may

  592. take it.

  593. And so

  594. as Paul

  595. launches into

  596. chapter 5,

  597. he's helping

  598. us not to

  599. lose heart.

  600. To keep

  601. surrendering all

  602. to Jesus.

  603. To keep

  604. sacrificing for

  605. God's global

  606. cause because

  607. in these verses

  608. he deals with

  609. that threat.

  610. and the

  611. way he

  612. deals with

  613. it is

  614. you're

  615. actually not

  616. going to

  617. lose it.

  618. You think

  619. this is

  620. good?

  621. All those

  622. things I

  623. described,

  624. you think

  625. this is

  626. good?

  627. You're

  628. going to

  629. get more

  630. if you

  631. pursue

  632. Jesus.

  633. Verse 1.

  634. Now we

  635. know that

  636. if the

  637. earthly

  638. tent we

  639. live in

  640. is destroyed,

  641. we have a

  642. building from

  643. God, an

  644. eternal house

  645. in heaven,

  646. not built

  647. by human

  648. hands.

  649. So the

  650. contrast here

  651. that he

  652. says is

  653. between the

  654. temporary

  655. inferior

  656. tent that

  657. is my

  658. wasting away

  659. body,

  660. to the

  661. eternal

  662. superior

  663. building that

  664. is the

  665. resurrected,

  666. perfected,

  667. eternal body

  668. that Jesus

  669. will give me.

  670. And so

  671. what he

  672. does here

  673. in verse

  674. 1 is he

  675. gives us a

  676. real dose

  677. of realism.

  678. Every person

  679. experiences the

  680. wasting away

  681. of the body

  682. and finally

  683. death.

  684. It is a

  685. normal

  686. experience.

  687. We will

  688. all experience

  689. that at

  690. some point.

  691. His point

  692. is your

  693. life is not

  694. secure anyway.

  695. we live

  696. in a tent,

  697. not a

  698. building.

  699. Tents are

  700. vulnerable and

  701. weak.

  702. And Paul

  703. here wants

  704. us to be

  705. free from

  706. the expectation

  707. that we

  708. will be

  709. free from

  710. fragility and

  711. frailty while

  712. we live in

  713. this world,

  714. whether we

  715. pursue Christ

  716. or not.

  717. Pursue all

  718. the security

  719. and protection

  720. and comfort

  721. you like.

  722. It won't

  723. provide what

  724. you want it

  725. to.

  726. Death looms

  727. as a shadow

  728. over every

  729. life.

  730. Which is

  731. partly why

  732. we groan.

  733. Verse 2,

  734. we groan

  735. longing to

  736. be clothed

  737. with our

  738. heavenly

  739. dwelling because

  740. when we

  741. are clothed

  742. we will

  743. not be

  744. found naked.

  745. For while

  746. we are in

  747. this tent

  748. we groan

  749. and are

  750. burdened

  751. because we

  752. do not

  753. wish to

  754. be

  755. unclothed.

  756. The groaning

  757. while we're

  758. in this tent

  759. means that

  760. we groan

  761. all the

  762. time.

  763. Impending

  764. death

  765. means that

  766. groaning

  767. is everyone's

  768. experience.

  769. at any

  770. moment

  771. death

  772. will bring

  773. into question

  774. everything that

  775. we've held

  776. dear.

  777. Everything that

  778. we have

  779. claimed to

  780. achieve in

  781. this life.

  782. But the

  783. groaning of the

  784. Christian has an

  785. added element.

  786. Verse 2 says

  787. that we groan

  788. because we

  789. want the

  790. eternal

  791. perfected

  792. resurrection

  793. body.

  794. The building

  795. made by

  796. God.

  797. That's what we

  798. groan.

  799. We long for

  800. it in other

  801. words.

  802. A resurrected

  803. body is our

  804. hope.

  805. Our own

  806. bodies will

  807. be fitted

  808. out eternally

  809. perfectly

  810. fallously

  811. like Jesus'

  812. body.

  813. That's good

  814. because a

  815. building is so

  816. much more

  817. secure than

  818. a tent.

  819. Especially

  820. notice when

  821. this building

  822. in verse 1

  823. is built

  824. and is coming

  825. from God.

  826. The eternal

  827. God.

  828. This building

  829. is not made

  830. by flawed

  831. human hands

  832. like mine

  833. but made

  834. by perfect

  835. eternal

  836. hands like

  837. God.

  838. We have

  839. the secure

  840. hope because

  841. of the great

  842. treasure of

  843. the gospel.

  844. That's why

  845. we get this

  846. building.

  847. I haven't

  848. made it with

  849. my hands.

  850. God has

  851. made it for

  852. me.

  853. For me,

  854. a sinful,

  855. flawed,

  856. ungrateful,

  857. undeserving of

  858. God's love,

  859. deserving of

  860. his condemnation.

  861. People like

  862. me who have

  863. been forgiven

  864. through the

  865. work of the

  866. Lord Jesus

  867. Christ have

  868. this hope.

  869. I go from

  870. death to

  871. life eternal.

  872. It is

  873. secure and

  874. it is an

  875. eternal gift.

  876. It's an

  877. eternal house

  878. in heaven

  879. given to

  880. everyone who

  881. trusts in the

  882. Lord Jesus

  883. Christ.

  884. That is

  885. Paul's hope

  886. and it is

  887. our hope

  888. who live by

  889. faith in

  890. the Lord

  891. Jesus.

  892. As verse 5

  893. says,

  894. now it is

  895. God who

  896. has made

  897. us for

  898. this very

  899. purpose.

  900. He is the

  901. builder of the

  902. eternal house,

  903. the secure

  904. building,

  905. the perfect

  906. building and

  907. he has made

  908. it for me.

  909. Okay,

  910. that's good.

  911. That renews

  912. me and

  913. gives me

  914. focus in

  915. serving Christ

  916. in that life

  917. in this world

  918. is not the

  919. end.

  920. Paul has

  921. helped me to

  922. see, just

  923. get a glimpse

  924. of the thing

  925. which is

  926. unseen.

  927. There is an

  928. eternal and

  929. perfect life in

  930. Christ waiting

  931. for me.

  932. But there

  933. is one

  934. more unseen

  935. thing that I

  936. need help

  937. here to

  938. see and

  939. that is

  940. when do I

  941. get this

  942. new eternal

  943. and perfect

  944. life?

  945. This new

  946. body, this

  947. new building

  948. fitted for

  949. eternity so

  950. that I can

  951. enjoy the

  952. food, the

  953. relationships and

  954. everything else

  955. in heaven for

  956. all of

  957. eternity.

  958. eternity.

  959. And this

  960. is the

  961. other unseen

  962. thing which

  963. I need to

  964. see if I'm

  965. going to not

  966. lose heart in

  967. serving Christ.

  968. What happens

  969. when you

  970. die?

  971. In his

  972. answer, Paul

  973. here wants us

  974. to be utterly

  975. secure because

  976. security will

  977. renew us

  978. inwardly as

  979. we outwardly

  980. waste away.

  981. And he

  982. addresses this

  983. in verse 4

  984. and onwards.

  985. We do not

  986. wish to be

  987. unclothed but

  988. to be clothed

  989. with our

  990. heavenly dwelling

  991. so that what

  992. is mortal may

  993. be swallowed up

  994. by life.

  995. To go back to

  996. the tent

  997. building metaphor,

  998. what Paul is

  999. saying here is

  1000. I want the

  1001. building

  1002. fantastic,

  1003. new eternal

  1004. perfect body.

  1005. What I don't

  1006. want to experience

  1007. is my tent

  1008. being folded up

  1009. and packed away

  1010. before I get

  1011. the building.

  1012. I don't

  1013. want to die

  1014. in order to

  1015. get that.

  1016. That is, I

  1017. actually don't

  1018. want to be

  1019. separated from

  1020. my body.

  1021. I don't want

  1022. to be found

  1023. naked is what

  1024. he says in

  1025. verse 3.

  1026. He doesn't

  1027. want to die

  1028. and be absent

  1029. from the body.

  1030. And so if he

  1031. has a choice,

  1032. he wants Jesus

  1033. to come back

  1034. and immediately

  1035. swallow, if you

  1036. like, his life

  1037. up.

  1038. That is, he

  1039. wants Jesus

  1040. to immediately

  1041. swap his

  1042. tent for the

  1043. building in a

  1044. twinkling of an

  1045. eye, as other

  1046. parts of the New

  1047. Testament say.

  1048. Christ will come

  1049. back and in a

  1050. twinkling of an

  1051. eye, those who

  1052. are alive in

  1053. Christ, those who

  1054. are walking the

  1055. face of the

  1056. earth, trusting in

  1057. Jesus at that

  1058. moment, will

  1059. immediately be

  1060. transformed.

  1061. No death.

  1062. That's an

  1063. awesome option.

  1064. Bring it on any

  1065. day, I reckon.

  1066. That's what he

  1067. means when he

  1068. says what is

  1069. mortal may be

  1070. swallowed up by

  1071. life.

  1072. Good option.

  1073. No death.

  1074. No separation

  1075. from the body.

  1076. No wasting

  1077. away.

  1078. No weariness

  1079. and weakness

  1080. in a twinkling

  1081. of an eye.

  1082. All that stuff

  1083. gone.

  1084. Perfected.

  1085. Unrestricted.

  1086. Eternal.

  1087. In the presence

  1088. of Jesus.

  1089. With my body.

  1090. Able to give

  1091. him a hug.

  1092. That's

  1093. preference number

  1094. one.

  1095. I'm assuming

  1096. that's if you're

  1097. in Christ, that

  1098. is your

  1099. preference.

  1100. That seems

  1101. like a good

  1102. option to

  1103. me.

  1104. You see, like

  1105. us, Paul loved

  1106. life in this

  1107. world.

  1108. He loved the

  1109. ability to be

  1110. able to hug

  1111. people and

  1112. kiss them and

  1113. eat food and

  1114. chat and

  1115. travel and

  1116. whatever else

  1117. it was.

  1118. Which is why

  1119. the Christian

  1120. hope of bodily

  1121. resurrection

  1122. connects so

  1123. significantly with

  1124. our hearts.

  1125. We don't want

  1126. to be separated

  1127. from our

  1128. bodies.

  1129. bodily

  1130. resurrection in

  1131. a perfect

  1132. physical world

  1133. that goes on

  1134. forever is

  1135. our hope.

  1136. Our hope as a

  1137. Christian is not

  1138. an aimless

  1139. spiritual world.

  1140. It's not

  1141. clouds and

  1142. wings and

  1143. harps, but

  1144. relationships and

  1145. work and trees

  1146. and rivers and

  1147. food in the

  1148. presence of our

  1149. great God.

  1150. life.

  1151. And that's, I

  1152. think, put Paul's

  1153. lifestyle in

  1154. perspective for us.

  1155. He didn't endure

  1156. what he did for

  1157. Christ because he

  1158. didn't love life in

  1159. this world.

  1160. He didn't surrender

  1161. all that he

  1162. surrendered.

  1163. He did not suffer

  1164. what he suffered

  1165. because he was a

  1166. depressing, morose

  1167. kind of dude.

  1168. He just went,

  1169. I'll just bring it

  1170. on because I

  1171. really hate my

  1172. life.

  1173. He loved it and

  1174. he wants to spend

  1175. eternity with his

  1176. body in a

  1177. perfected world

  1178. and so he

  1179. doesn't want to

  1180. experience death.

  1181. He wants to go

  1182. from this life and

  1183. immediately into the

  1184. next.

  1185. And it will

  1186. happen for

  1187. everyone who

  1188. lives by faith in

  1189. the Lord Jesus

  1190. when Jesus comes

  1191. back.

  1192. That will be your

  1193. experience.

  1194. If Jesus comes

  1195. back when you're

  1196. alive, pray for

  1197. that to come.

  1198. Come, Lord

  1199. Jesus.

  1200. So Paul says,

  1201. see the unseen

  1202. and feel the

  1203. security of that.

  1204. Now if you

  1205. took the first

  1206. option to his

  1207. extreme, you

  1208. could possibly

  1209. conclude that

  1210. life is greater

  1211. and the greatest

  1212. possible thing and

  1213. so do whatever you

  1214. can to keep

  1215. this life secure

  1216. in this world.

  1217. Which is why Paul

  1218. gives us his second

  1219. preference in verse

  1220. 8 and without

  1221. verse 8 you

  1222. could misconstrue

  1223. verse 4.

  1224. That is, this

  1225. helps us, verse 8

  1226. helps us to

  1227. correct any

  1228. misunderstanding of

  1229. verse 4 we

  1230. might have.

  1231. He said, I

  1232. would prefer to

  1233. be away from the

  1234. body and at

  1235. home with the

  1236. Lord.

  1237. What both

  1238. option 1,

  1239. verse 4, and

  1240. option 2,

  1241. verse 8 reveal

  1242. is that the

  1243. highest priority

  1244. in life is to

  1245. be with Jesus.

  1246. That's the

  1247. highest priority.

  1248. If the choice

  1249. here is between

  1250. more life, for

  1251. Paul is what he

  1252. says, if the

  1253. choice is between

  1254. more life here by

  1255. faith and going

  1256. to be with

  1257. Christ, he'd

  1258. prefer that God

  1259. would take him

  1260. even if it means

  1261. that his body

  1262. gets buried in the

  1263. ground here right

  1264. now and he has

  1265. to wait before

  1266. Jesus comes back

  1267. and unites him

  1268. with that body.

  1269. Being at home

  1270. with the Lord,

  1271. he said, is so

  1272. irresistibly

  1273. attractive because

  1274. it means ultimately

  1275. more intimacy

  1276. with Jesus

  1277. than we would

  1278. ever experience

  1279. in this world.

  1280. Whatever

  1281. happens with

  1282. you, Jesus

  1283. comes back,

  1284. twigly

  1285. even I, done

  1286. or death

  1287. and wait

  1288. for your body

  1289. to be united

  1290. with him in his

  1291. presence in the

  1292. physical world.

  1293. Paul

  1294. wants us to

  1295. have absolute

  1296. security and

  1297. confidence in the

  1298. future.

  1299. For Paul,

  1300. death

  1301. meant

  1302. gain.

  1303. Philippians 2,

  1304. to live is

  1305. Christ and to

  1306. die is

  1307. gain.

  1308. It's better

  1309. in Christ.

  1310. And what

  1311. Paul writes

  1312. here is meant

  1313. to give the

  1314. Christian a

  1315. deep sense

  1316. of security

  1317. in the future.

  1318. For the

  1319. Christian who

  1320. loses their

  1321. life before

  1322. Jesus returns,

  1323. you are not

  1324. aimlessly floating

  1325. around in some

  1326. spiritual world.

  1327. At the point

  1328. of death,

  1329. there is an

  1330. immediate

  1331. folding into

  1332. the presence

  1333. of Christ.

  1334. We will not

  1335. be separated

  1336. from Jesus.

  1337. We will never

  1338. be separated

  1339. from his love.

  1340. that is the

  1341. impact of

  1342. verses 6 to

  1343. 8.

  1344. But these

  1345. verses do

  1346. emphasize that

  1347. the great and

  1348. final hope of

  1349. the Christian

  1350. is not to

  1351. die and be

  1352. freed from

  1353. our bodies.

  1354. Our hope is

  1355. not a

  1356. spiritual world.

  1357. It is a

  1358. world more

  1359. physical and

  1360. real than the

  1361. world in which

  1362. we live.

  1363. This is but a

  1364. foretaste, this

  1365. world, of what

  1366. is yet to

  1367. come.

  1368. The hope of

  1369. the Christian is

  1370. not to be free

  1371. from their

  1372. body.

  1373. We often

  1374. say of the

  1375. Christian who

  1376. has just

  1377. died, well

  1378. it's all over

  1379. now, at least

  1380. they're in

  1381. heaven.

  1382. And I want to

  1383. say that's

  1384. option number

  1385. two, according

  1386. to Paul, and

  1387. that is good,

  1388. but it's not

  1389. the best.

  1390. There is still

  1391. something yet

  1392. to come.

  1393. There is even

  1394. more forward to

  1395. look forward to

  1396. when Jesus

  1397. return and

  1398. raises all the

  1399. dead in Christ.

  1400. As 1

  1401. Corinthians 15

  1402. 54 says,

  1403. when the

  1404. perishable,

  1405. this body,

  1406. has been

  1407. clothed with

  1408. the imperishable,

  1409. my eternal

  1410. body, and

  1411. the mortal,

  1412. this body,

  1413. with immortality,

  1414. the eternal

  1415. body, then

  1416. the saying

  1417. that is written

  1418. will come

  1419. true.

  1420. Death has

  1421. been swallowed

  1422. up in victory.

  1423. That, the

  1424. perusia, the

  1425. end of time

  1426. when Jesus

  1427. comes back and

  1428. winds up this

  1429. whole show,

  1430. that's the

  1431. victory we're

  1432. looking for.

  1433. The

  1434. resurrection

  1435. body is

  1436. our hope.

  1437. And so

  1438. Paul here has

  1439. given us a

  1440. glimpse of the

  1441. unseen.

  1442. I can't explain

  1443. it all to you.

  1444. I can just do

  1445. what Paul did

  1446. and try and

  1447. explain something

  1448. of what he has

  1449. seen.

  1450. It is meant to

  1451. cause us to be

  1452. confident.

  1453. In fact, he uses

  1454. the word twice in

  1455. these verses,

  1456. that he is

  1457. confident.

  1458. Of course, the

  1459. future shapes his

  1460. present life.

  1461. If Christ doesn't

  1462. come and clothe him

  1463. with immortality in

  1464. the twinkling of

  1465. an eye, bam, and

  1466. he doesn't call him

  1467. home in death, then

  1468. Paul will, verse

  1469. 7, live by faith

  1470. and not by sight.

  1471. That is his life

  1472. in this world.

  1473. Now, that living

  1474. by faith and not

  1475. by sight doesn't

  1476. mean we leap into

  1477. the dark and just

  1478. hope that preference

1479. one or two, one or

  1480. both of them sort

  1481. of work out and

  1482. come true.

  1483. What it does mean

  1484. is that what is

  1485. eternal, precious,

  1486. important, and

  1487. beyond our senses,

  1488. that's what it

  1489. means.

  1490. We can't see or

  1491. even imagine what

  1492. the eternal building

  1493. will look like and

  1494. feel like.

  1495. What does it mean

  1496. that my body will

  1497. not decay?

  1498. Ever.

  1499. What does it mean

  1500. it will never be

  1501. restricted?

  1502. Ever.

  1503. I don't get that.

  1504. I mean, I'm

  1505. preaching with a

  1506. neck that I can't

  1507. hardly move.

  1508. That direction at

  1509. the moment.

  1510. That's got to be

1511. good to get rid of

  1512. that one.

  1513. And so what

  1514. happens is,

  1515. living by faith

  1516. means we look to

  1517. what we know of

  1518. the Lord Jesus

  1519. from faithful

  1520. witnesses who

  1521. walked and ate

  1522. with him and

  1523. heard his voice,

  1524. witnessed the

  1525. horror of his

  1526. crucifixion and

  1527. saw him risen from

  1528. the dead, who

  1529. ate fish with him

  1530. on a beach after

  1531. that had happened,

  1532. put their hands

  1533. in his side and

  1534. in his fingers.

  1535. And we look to

  1536. such tests and

  1537. we believe the

  1538. good news of the

  1539. salvation of

  1540. sinners and with

  1541. the help of the

  1542. down payment of

  1543. the Holy Spirit,

  1544. we trust his

  1545. word and we

  1546. renew our

  1547. courage and we

  1548. make it our

  1549. goal to please

  1550. him, to live

  1551. by faith.

  1552. death.

  1553. There is, just

  1554. before we finish,

  1555. there is another

  1556. aspect of the

  1557. end of all

  1558. things that

  1559. shapes Paul's

  1560. lifestyle and

  1561. gives us another

  1562. reason why we

  1563. should want to

  1564. please him.

  1565. It's verse 10,

  1566. for we must all

  1567. appear before the

  1568. judgment seat of

  1569. Christ that each

  1570. one may receive

  1571. what is due him

  1572. for the things

  1573. done while in

  1574. the body,

  1575. whether good or

  1576. bad.

  1577. very quickly,

  1578. for Paul in

  1579. these verses,

  1580. it's not

  1581. condemnation that

  1582. he fears,

  1583. although it

  1584. might be true

  1585. for some who

  1586. at the present

  1587. are not trusting

  1588. in Christ.

  1589. What he fears

  1590. in that verse,

  1591. in the judgment

  1592. throne, is

  1593. evaluation.

  1594. salvation.

  1595. It's not the

  1596. loss of salvation,

  1597. but the loss of

  1598. commendation that

  1599. he fears.

  1600. Because he lives

  1601. to please the

  1602. Lord, his

  1603. greatest fear is

  1604. in fact not to

  1605. please him with

  1606. his life.

  1607. Now when I say

  1608. that, it sounds

  1609. like I'm talking

  1610. about rewards in

  1611. heaven.

  1612. And that's

  1613. true, because

  1614. that's what I am

  1615. saying.

  1616. The problem

  1617. is that when I

  1618. talk about

  1619. rewards in

  1620. heaven, it

  1621. sounds anti-grace.

  1622. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:8

  1623. verse 8 says

  1624. that we are

  1625. saved by grace

  1626. through faith and

  1627. not of any works

  1628. that we've done.

  1629. We do not earn

  1630. our salvation.

  1631. Works

  1632. contradict grace,

  1633. according to

  1634. Ephesians 2,

  1635. and rewards

  1636. sound like works.

  1637. I think what

  1638. Paul is saying

  1639. is salvation is

  1640. by faith and

  1641. rewards are by

  1642. faith, but the

  1643. evidence of

  1644. invisible faith in

  1645. the judgment room

  1646. of Christ at the

  1647. end of time will

  1648. be a transformed

  1649. life.

  1650. I don't think his

  1651. teaching here is

1652. out of line to the

  1653. rest of the New

  1654. Testament.

  1655. It's in line with

  1656. Jesus teaching on

  1657. the accountability of

  1658. the steward to his

  1659. master with respect

  1660. to the faithful

  1661. use of gifts

  1662. entrusted to him.

  1663. It's in line with

  1664. Paul's teaching in

  1665. 1 Corinthians 3.

  1666. The purchase of

  1667. our pardon by the

  1668. blood of Jesus,

  1669. sorry, the purchase

  1670. of our pardon was

  1671. the blood of Jesus,

  1672. sufficient once for

  1673. all to cover all

  1674. of our sins.

  1675. The means by which

  1676. we own it is

  1677. faith.

  1678. And faith alone.

  1679. And at the

  1680. judgment of

  1681. believers, Jesus

  1682. is looking for

  1683. deeds that prove

  1684. that we have

  1685. enjoyed our

  1686. pardon.

  1687. One movie I

  1688. haven't searched

  1689. on Wikipedia and

  1690. haven't gone to bed

  1691. early on is

  1692. Gladiator.

  1693. At the beginning

  1694. of the movie,

  1695. Russell Crowe's

  1696. character, Maximus

  1697. Decimus Meridius,

  1698. is inspiring

  1699. his troops to

  1700. fight well in

  1701. one final battle,

  1702. knowing full well

  1703. that they might

  1704. die, but the

  1705. victory is almost

  1706. there.

  1707. It's been a long

  1708. campaign.

  1709. And to inspire

  1710. his troops to

  1711. throw their life

  1712. into the battle,

  1713. he says to them,

  1714. what we do in

  1715. life echoes in

  1716. eternity.

  1717. of course, it's

  1718. unfortunate that he

  1719. then went on to

  1720. live a life of

  1721. seeking revenge,

  1722. but that's beside

  1723. the point.

  1724. He was still the

  1725. hero, I think,

  1726. in the end,

  1727. even though he

  1728. died.

  1729. I think that's what

  1730. Paul is doing for

  1731. us here.

  1732. Do not lose

  1733. heart.

  1734. The Lord Jesus

  1735. has secured an

  1736. eternal building for

  1737. all who trust in

  1738. him.

  1739. Look towards it by

  1740. surrendering your

  1741. life to him.

  1742. Who we are in

  1743. Christ, what we

  1744. have done with

  1745. our time, how we

  1746. have pursued

  1747. opportunities, how

  1748. single-minded we

  1749. have been in our

  1750. Christian service

  1751. will matter for all

  1752. of eternity.

  1753. And he says it's

  1754. possible to live in

1755. such a way as to

  1756. build an eternal

  1757. weight of glory.

  1758. In 2 Corinthians,

  1759. Paul demonstrates a

  1760. life that hasn't

  1761. lost heart.

  1762. His lifestyle is

  1763. the evidence of

  1764. it.

  1765. He longed for a

  1766. life of comfort

  1767. and security and

  1768. health and safety

  1769. and painlessness,

  1770. and so much so

  1771. that he surrendered

  1772. his body to

  1773. insults and

  1774. torments and

  1775. beatings for the

  1776. sake of Christ.

  1777. Because in

  1778. surrendering his

  1779. body, he secured

  1780. the comfort, the

  1781. security, the

  1782. health, the

  1783. safety and the

  1784. painlessness.

  1785. And it was the

  1786. grace of God that

  1787. was sufficient to

  1788. sustain him.

  1789. My friends, I

  1790. think that one of

  1791. the primary

  1792. evidences of a

  1793. Christian's losing

  1794. heart in pursuing

  1795. God's global

  1796. agenda is seen in

  1797. pursuing confidence,

  1798. security, and

  1799. painlessness, and

  1800. everything else here

  1801. and now, bedding down

  1802. in this world now.

  1803. That is, we start

  1804. living by sight rather

  1805. than living by faith.

  1806. life.

  1807. The temporal becomes

  1808. what's, becomes, you

  1809. know, the supreme

  1810. thing for us.

  1811. We stop looking to

  1812. the eternal building

  1813. and try to make

  1814. this tent as

  1815. secure and as

  1816. comfortable as we

  1817. possibly can.

  1818. A few more poles,

  1819. a few extra chairs.

1820. I mean, have you been

  1821. to a camping shop

  1822. lately?

  1823. It's astounding.

  1824. You can get

  1825. recliner camping

  1826. chairs.

  1827. You've got one.

  1828. Oh, you can get

  1829. recliner camping

  1830. chairs, hot water

  1831. systems, fridges.

  1832. I mean, why, why

  1833. even go?

  1834. Just stay at home.

  1835. You've got it all

  1836. there.

  1837. And sometimes we do

  1838. the same with the

  1839. Christian life.

  1840. We just pursue the

  1841. comfort and the

  1842. security.

1843. We try and make the

  1844. tent as livable as

  1845. we possibly can.

  1846. And my friends, it's a

  1847. daily struggle.

  1848. Present comfort,

  1849. security, and glory,

  1850. or eternal comfort,

  1851. security, and glory.

  1852. It's my struggle.

  1853. I'll level with you.

  1854. I love comfort.

  1855. And the older I'm

  1856. getting, the more I

  1857. like it.

1858. I'll be frank with you.

  1859. That's why I wear a

1860. jumper on a cold day.

  1861. It's because I love

  1862. comfort.

  1863. It's why I'd rather be

  1864. sitting in business

  1865. class than economy

  1866. class, because I love

  1867. comfort.

  1868. It's like the fact I

  1869. like an air conditioner

  1870. when I'm in hot

  1871. economy, hot climate.

  1872. It's because I like

  1873. comfort.

1874. I like gadgets in my

  1875. car.

  1876. Not because I need

  1877. them, because they're,

  1878. I don't know, because

  1879. I like comfort.

  1880. It's a daily battle.

  1881. It's a daily battle.

1882. And so I think what

  1883. this passage is doing

1884. for us is, do we share

  1885. Paul's biblical

  1886. priorities and values

  1887. in life?

1888. Do I love his grace and

  1889. his mercy?

1890. Do I enjoy his pardon?

1891. Do I long first and

1892. foremost, and do I pray

1893. for Jesus to come back?

  1894. Or would Jesus coming

1895. back right now be an

  1896. inconvenience for you?

1897. Secondly, do I long to

1898. be at home with Christ,

1899. even if it costs the

  1900. surrender of my body?

  1901. And thirdly, am I

1902. committed to walk by faith

1903. until he comes or until

1904. he calls, and to live by

1905. faith in such a way

1906. that what awaits me in

  1907. the building is an

  1908. eternal weight of glory

  1909. in Christ.

  1910. Amen.
