  1. Well, good evening, friends. Good to be here with you tonight.

  2. You should have a sermon outline.

  3. That'll give you some sort of an idea of the direction that we're heading

  4. as we kick off this series on work.

  5. This one is laying the groundwork and a fairly broad foundation,

  6. if you like, for the next few weeks.

  7. Let's pray.

  8. Gracious God, as we come to your word now,

  9. we pray that you would give us wisdom and insight,

  10. and we pray, Father, that particularly that you would help us to connect

  11. what we do here now and in our Christian walk

  12. with what we do from Monday to Saturday in our life.

  13. I pray, Father, we would not have that separation in life,

  14. but see it all under your sovereign hand,

  15. knowing that there is not a square inch in this universe

  16. that is not subject to the Lord Jesus.

  17. And so help us to see what we do in our works subject to him.

  18. And we pray for your glory. Amen.

  19. Monday morning feels so bad.

  20. Everybody seems to nag me.

  21. Coming Tuesday, I feel better.

  22. Even my old man looks good.

  23. Wednesday just don't go.

  24. Thursday goes too slow.

  25. I've got Friday on my mind.

  26. Going to have fun in the city and be with my girl.

  27. She's so pretty.

  28. She looks fine.

  29. She's out of sight to me.

  30. Tonight I spend my bread.

  31. Tonight I lose my head.

  32. Tonight I've got to get to bed.

  33. Monday I've got Friday on my mind.

  34. They are some of the lyrics from the song Friday on my mind,

  35. which was released in 1966 by the Easy Beats.

  36. And what's more, it sits at position number one

  37. on the list of Australia's all-time favourite songs for 47 years.

  38. That's pretty astounding.

  39. And it probably sits there because it says something about our psyche.

  40. From the day I start working, I'm looking forward to knocking off.

  41. We are the land that is known as of compo claims, false compo claims, sickies, days off,

  42. weekends, long weekends, annual leave.

  43. I was sitting with someone in Hong Kong a few weeks ago at a table,

  44. and part of this gala dinner thing that they were doing was they were auctioning off 15 nights accommodation

  45. in this resort in Thailand.

  46. And the American leans across to me and says,

  47. who gets 15 days annual leave a year?

  48. Oh, well, I do.

  49. And then a few extra.

  50. From the day I start working, I think about the day I stop working.

  51. Early retirement in our culture is the ultimate to aspire to.

  52. It's an idol even, because anything better is better than having to work.

  53. And so that means, if that's the kind of culture that we're marinating in,

  54. it means that we've got some work to do when we come to this series of work.

  55. The dominant mentality in our society is that you work to live.

  56. You work in order to live.

  57. That is, work is a means to something else.

  58. It's not a purpose in itself.

  59. And so the 90,000 hours the average person will spend in paid employment in their life

  60. is a means to something else, not a purpose in itself.

  61. 90,000 hours of just purposelessness.

  62. So what does God think about the large portion of our time spent working?

  63. That's what we're going to do, look at in the next five weeks.

  64. Let me tell you straight up, in the last year,

  65. I've had a very steep learning curve on this issue of work.

  66. I was discipled as a young Christian with the thinking that because the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ

  67. is the greatest thing in all the universe,

  68. then serving the gospel is the greatest thing.

  69. And particularly to be able to serve the gospel in full-time vocational ministry

  70. is the greatest thing that you could do with your life.

  71. And so subconsciously, unintentionally,

  72. it meant that every other job wasn't as important to God as my vocation.

  73. I'd say that my overall view of work was simply unthought through.

  74. The sense that ordinary work is second class,

  75. spiritually particularly second class,

  76. wasn't so much believed and taught by me,

  77. because I always sat a little uncomfortable with it,

  78. but it would certainly have been caught from me.

  79. That is, you've never heard anything from me

  80. that suggested that God approved of secular work.

  81. We've had commissioning services for people going on short-term mission trips,

  82. for missionaries.

  83. We've had prayers for people in full-time ministry.

  84. We rejoice when someone goes to Bible college,

  85. but I've never conducted a commissioning service for teachers,

  86. for business people, for lawyers, for cleaners, for parents, and for chefs.

  87. Never done it.

  88. With the best of intentions and sincerity of heart,

  89. I have discouraged others with some faulty ideas about faith and work

  90. and how they connect.

  91. I've wrongly viewed some kinds of work to be more important than others.

  92. I have had a hierarchy of work,

  93. and I've had a narrow view of how the gospel transforms our work.

  94. I have given minority attention to what is, in effect, our majority activity.

  95. I've either failed by devaluing and ignoring your work,

  96. or I've failed by not helping you to see a more biblically robust and rigorous

  97. and God-honoring outlook on your work.

  98. And that has all sorts of complications and implications that flow from that.

  99. And so right as we kick off this series, I want to say I'm sorry.

  100. I failed in that.

  101. And I'm hoping that what we do in the next few weeks

  102. will recapture something more of a God-honoring view

  103. of what we spend most of our time doing.

  104. And particularly, I'm hoping that at the end of these five weeks

  105. that you'll be able to connect what you do on Sunday

  106. with or even what you do in your own personal spiritual devotional life

  107. with what happens with you on Monday through to Saturday.

  108. I think that it's so essential

  109. because we are now working harder and harder and faster and faster

  110. for that which is seemingly more and more meaningless.

  111. And if we could truly believe

  112. that what we do is part of God's good and eternal purposes,

  113. I think this would be a tonic more invigorating than a Red Bull

  114. and a triple shot espresso.

  115. It may even result in us waking up.

  116. And I'm not sure this is going to necessarily happen in the next five weeks,

  117. but it may result in us being able to get up on a Monday morning

  118. and instead of thinking on Friday,

  119. be able to say, thank God it's Monday.

  120. Let me just pause there and plug one resource.

  121. And that is this book,

  122. Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller.

  123. This is astonishingly good.

  124. I didn't start my thinking here,

  125. but it has formed a lot of my thinking.

  126. So I am unashamedly ripping off Tim Keller.

  127. If you're going to rip anyone off,

  128. Tim Keller is a good guy to do it with.

  129. And so I'm unashamedly ripping him off.

  130. I'm still in the learning process in this.

  131. And what I'm doing in my couple of talks today and next week

  132. is I'm taking some of the ideas from here.

  133. But if you want a fuller picture,

  134. and particularly a fuller biblical picture,

  135. because I frankly haven't got time to do what he does

  136. in the times that we're going to be meeting together.

  137. You want a fuller and a more robust theology of vocation,

  138. work and jobs and stuff,

  139. read this book.

  140. Get it, read it, digest it.

  141. It is awesome.

  142. There's two or three at the back.

  143. Two at the back.

  144. And this is the third one that's there.

  145. So buy it tonight.

  146. Don't all rush over just yet,

  147. but be quick at the end of the service.

  148. Okay, let's kick off.

  149. The Bible begins, interestingly enough,

  150. about talking about work

  151. as soon as it begins talking about anything.

  152. That is how important and basic it is.

  153. We just had it read out there in Genesis 1 into Genesis 2.

  154. The Bible begins talking about work

  155. as soon as it begins talking about anything.

  156. Genesis describes God's creation of the world as work.

  157. It's what God does.

  158. And then it shows us human beings working in paradise.

  159. So God creates the world.

  160. He works to create the world.

  161. And then it says,

  162. a little bit further down in chapter 2,

  163. that there was no one to do work in the garden.

  164. So he created man.

  165. It's remarkable,

  166. at the end of Genesis 1,

  167. God not only works,

  168. but he actually finds delight in his work.

  169. Have a look at it there in verse 31.

  170. God saw all that he made,

  171. and it was very good.

  172. So God finds what he has done as beautiful.

  173. He stands back,

  174. takes in the whole creation that he has just made,

  175. and goes,

  176. yeah, not bad.

  177. Not bad.

  178. That's good.

  179. Like all good and satisfying work,

  180. the worker sees himself in the work.

  181. So a friend of mine came and stayed last night,

  182. and we were walking around outside,

  183. and he walks on this deck

  184. that we got out the back of the rectory,

  185. and he's going,

  186. oh,

  187. see,

  188. this is pretty solid.

  189. This is good work.

  190. And I'm like,

  191. I did that.

  192. I made that.

  193. And while we're at it,

  194. see this chair?

  195. I completely renovated this chair as well.

  196. It's something that you do.

  197. I mean,

  198. it's a bloke thing as well.

  199. You cut the grass,

  200. you pack the dishwasher.

  201. Did you notice what I did?

  202. You did a good job,

  203. Steve.

  204. Even my girls learned to do that.

  205. You know,

  206. Izzy comes along,

  207. Daddy,

  208. you cut the grass really well.

  209. She's going to be a great wife one day.

  210. She's just fantastic.

  211. Genesis 2,

  212. there's more to being a great wife

  213. than just,

  214. you know,

  215. propping up your husband's ego.

  216. I can say that.

  217. Genesis 2 goes on to show

  218. that God works

  219. not only to create,

  220. but also to care for his creation.

  221. God creates human beings

  222. and then he works for them

  223. as their provider.

  224. So in verse 7 of chapter 2,

  225. he forms the man,

  226. he plants a garden for him

  227. and waters it in verses 6 to 8

  228. and fashions a wife for him

  229. in verses 21 and 22.

  230. And the rest of the Bible

  231. tells us that God continues

  232. to do this work of providing,

  233. caring for the world,

  234. by watering and cultivating the ground.

  235. For instance,

  236. in Psalm 104 verses 10 to 22,

    Psalms 104:10–22

  237. giving food to all that he's made,

  238. giving help to all who suffer

  239. and caring for the needs

  240. of every living thing,

  241. according to Psalm 145 verses 14 to 16.

    Psalms 145:14–16

  242. But we also see in Genesis

  243. that not only is God working,

  244. but he's commissioning workers

  245. to carry out his work.

  246. That's the point there in,

  247. I forget which verse it is,

  248. where God says,

  249. there's no one to do the work.

  250. He wants someone to do the work

  251. to carry out his work.

  252. And so in Genesis chapter 1 verse 28,

    Genesis 1:28

  253. he tells human beings

  254. to fill the earth

  255. and subdue it.

  256. And so that command there

  257. is a lot more than just have babies.

  258. A lot more than just have babies.

  259. And great reformers like Luther and Calvin

  260. have specifically expanded upon that

  261. and what it means to feel and subdue the earth.

  262. At the very least,

  263. the word subdue indicates

  264. that though all that God has made is good,

  265. it was still in a great degree undeveloped.

  266. And so part of the work of people

  267. is to develop God's ongoing creative work,

  268. to develop further,

  269. to grow it,

  270. to expand it,

  271. to make it good.

  272. God left creation

  273. with deep, untapped potential

  274. for cultivation

  275. that people were to unlock

  276. through their labor.

  277. You'll see in Genesis chapter 2 verse 15

    Genesis 2:15

  278. that he puts Adam and Eve

  279. into the garden

  280. to work it

  281. and to keep it.

  282. And so while God works for us

  283. as provider,

  284. we also work for him.

  285. He works through us.

  286. And so the book of Genesis

  287. leaves us with a striking truth.

  288. Work was part of paradise.

  289. God's good plan

  290. and creation

  291. always included

  292. human beings

  293. living in a constant cycle

  294. of work and rest.

  295. Work and rest.

  296. It was part of God's perfect design

  297. for human life

  298. because we are made

  299. in the image of God

  300. and part of his glory

  301. and happiness

  302. is that he works.

  303. As does the Lord Jesus

  304. who says in John chapter 5 verse 17,

    John 5:17

  305. My father is always

  306. at his work

  307. to this very day

  308. and I too

  309. am working.

  310. So it's startling

  311. to think that God

  312. made work part of paradise.

  313. Many people

  314. make the mistake

  315. of thinking that

  316. work is a curse

  317. and that something else,

  318. leisure, family,

  319. spiritual pursuits

  320. is the only way

  321. to find the meaning of life.

  322. The Bible, I think,

  323. exposes the lie

  324. of that idea.

  325. Work wasn't introduced

  326. as part of the brokenness

  327. and the curse of sin.

  328. Work is part of the blessedness

  329. of the garden of God.

  330. Work is much

  331. a basic human need

  332. as food

  333. and beauty

  334. and rest

  335. and friendship

  336. and prayer

  337. and sexuality.

  338. It is not simply

  339. medicine,

  340. it is food

  341. for the soul.

  342. According to the Bible,

  343. we don't merely

  344. need the money

  345. from work

  346. in order to survive.

  347. We need the work

  348. itself

  349. to survive

  350. and to live

  351. fully human lives.

  352. So rather than

  353. working to live,

  354. which is the dominant

  355. marinade,

  356. if you like,

  357. of the culture

  358. in which we're soaking,

  359. we live to work.

  360. Instead of

  361. working to live,

  362. we live to work

  363. is closer

  364. to the biblical idea.

  365. And I think

  366. that's what the Apostle Paul

  367. says in 2 Thessalonians

  368. 3.10

  369. where he says,

  370. if anyone

  371. is not willing

  372. to work,

  373. let him not eat.

  374. He makes

  375. the issue

  376. of work

  377. a life and death

  378. matter.

  379. If you don't eat,

  380. you die.

  381. Paul does not

  382. rebuke those

  383. who can't work

  384. for whatever reason,

  385. but he does say

  386. an unwillingness

  387. to work

  388. is not

  389. a trivial thing.

  390. For anyone

  391. to refuse

  392. to work

  393. is a fundamental

  394. violation

  395. of God's

  396. creation design

  397. for humanity.

  398. But of course,

  399. what the Bible

  400. does is it

  401. stops us

  402. from falling

  403. into the opposite

  404. mistake,

  405. namely that work

  406. is the only

  407. important human

  408. activity.

  409. Work is not

  410. all that there

  411. is to life.

  412. There is more

  413. to life

  414. than work.

  415. You will not

  416. have a meaningful

  417. life without work,

  418. but you cannot

  419. say that your work

  420. is the meaning

  421. of your life.

  422. If you make

  423. any work

  424. the purpose

  425. of your life,

  426. even if that

  427. is church

  428. ministry work,

  429. you create

  430. an idol

  431. that rivals

  432. God.

  433. Your relationship

  434. with God

  435. is the most

  436. important foundation

  437. for your life

  438. and indeed

  439. it keeps

  440. every other

  441. factor within

  442. balance,

  443. your work,

  444. your friendships,

  445. your family,

  446. your leisure,

  447. your pleasure,

  448. keeps all

  449. those other

  450. factors from

  451. becoming so

  452. important to

  453. you that

  454. it becomes

  455. addicting

  456. and distorted.

  457. So work

  458. is something

  459. that God

  460. does and

  461. it is designed

  462. and created

  463. by God

  464. for us to

  465. do as

  466. his image

  467. bearers.

  468. Now I think

  469. I should just

  470. pause there for a

  471. moment and

  472. explain what I

  473. mean by work

  474. otherwise

  475. those who

  476. are retired,

  477. the unemployed,

  478. the students,

  479. the children,

  480. the stay-at-home

  481. mums or dads

  482. are just going to

  483. switch off for

  484. the next five

  485. weeks and go

  486. this is not

  487. for me.

  488. The biblical

  489. and I want to

  490. say it is for

  491. you so listen

  492. it is for you.

  493. The biblical

  494. idea of work

  495. has its meaning

  496. in the word

  497. vocation.

  498. Unfortunately

  499. the classical

  500. understanding

  501. of vocation

  502. has been

  503. mostly exchanged

  504. today for

  505. what is

  506. essentially

  507. amounts to

  508. skills training

  509. for specific

  510. jobs.

  511. The idea of

  512. vocation is

  513. gone.

  514. One of the

  515. major differences

  516. between a

  517. vocation and

  518. a job is

  519. that someone

  520. calls you to

  521. a vocation.

  522. That's what

  523. in fact the

  524. word means.

  525. The word

  526. vocation means

  527. a calling.

  528. So when I

  529. talk about

  530. work I

  531. mean calling.

  532. I mean

  533. vocation.

  534. That's what I

  535. mean.

  536. I don't mean

  537. a job.

  538. I don't mean

  539. nine to five

  540. job sort of

  541. thing.

  542. So understood

  543. in a correct

  544. way in a

  545. biblical way

  546. Christian

  547. vocation is

  548. centered in a

  549. sovereign God

  550. who calls us

  551. to embrace the

  552. gospel of the

  553. Lord Jesus

  554. Christ and to

  555. follow him in

  556. the power of

  557. the Holy Spirit.

  558. And so our

  559. first and

  560. primary calling

  561. is to Christ.

  562. We're being

  563. called by God

  564. into relationship

  565. with himself

  566. through the

  567. Lord Jesus

  568. Christ.

  569. So if you're

  570. Christian that

  571. is your primary

  572. calling and

  573. that governs

  574. every other

  575. calling in

  576. life.

  577. But under

  578. that we all

  579. have secondary

  580. callings.

  581. A secondary

  582. position in

  583. life in which

  584. we live out

  585. our primary

  586. calling to

  587. Christ.

  588. Christ.

  589. And even

  590. though it's a

  591. secondary calling

  592. we must not

  593. minimize or

  594. devalue it.

  595. What makes the

  596. secondary calling

  597. significant is

  598. that God is the

  599. one who has

  600. called us to a

  601. life of service

  602. and contribution

  603. to society.

  604. That's basically

  605. the idea of

  606. 1 Corinthians 7.

  607. So first and

  608. foremost work

  609. vocation is

  610. not about

  611. economic exchange.

  612. It's not

  613. about financial

  614. remuneration or

  615. a pathway to

  616. the Australian

  617. dream but

  618. about God

  619. honoring activity

  620. and contribution

  621. and the

  622. building up of

  623. society.

  624. That's vocation

  625. under God.

  626. Our work, our

  627. vocation, our

  628. calling, our

  629. position in

  630. life, whatever

  631. it is, whether

  632. we are paid

  633. for it or not,

  634. is our

  635. specific human

  636. contribution to

  637. the ongoing

  638. creation and

  639. to the common

  640. good of

  641. society.

  642. Tim Keller, I'm

  643. not sure if he

  644. says it in the

  645. book, I don't

  646. recall him saying

  647. it there, but he

  648. certainly said it

  649. at the conference

  650. we're at, that

  651. his view is that

  652. work is everything

  653. in your life

  654. except your

  655. Sabbath rest and

  656. your leisure.

  657. It's everything

  658. else.

  659. Including me

  660. cutting the

  661. grass.

  662. depending on

  663. whether or not I

  664. regard that as

  665. leisure or not.

  666. And I think

  667. this is the

  668. point here in

  669. 1 Corinthians 7

  670. 17, the word

  671. called is used

  672. eight times.

  673. What is primary

  674. there?

  675. It is God who

  676. calls.

  677. Being called into

  678. relationship with

  679. God.

  680. And the second

  681. thing that flows

  682. out from that is

  683. that God who

  684. calls us into

  685. relationship with

  686. him and it is

  687. God who assigns

  688. us certain

  689. positions in

  690. life.

  691. And he says

  692. they're be

  693. content with

  694. those positions

  695. in life.

  696. So Martin

  697. Luther's idea

  698. that there is

  699. no hierarchy.

  700. There is no

  701. hierarchy in

  702. your calling in

  703. life, in your

  704. assigned positions,

  705. because God is

  706. the one who

  707. gives it.

  708. And so over

  709. the years,

  710. however, the

  711. primary and

  712. secondary callings

  713. have been,

  714. if you like,

  715. unhelpfully

  716. separated.

  717. And we

  718. have put a

  719. hierarchy in

  720. place.

  721. In its

  722. early historical

  723. development in

  724. Christian theology,

  725. vocation was

  726. understood to

  727. mean that

  728. everyone is

  729. called by

  730. God into

  731. salvation and

  732. a life of

  733. service through

  734. the Lord Jesus

  735. Christ.

  736. Everyone.

  737. There's no

  738. separation between

  739. clergy and

  740. laity.

  741. Eventually, the

  742. theology of

  743. vocation was

  744. distorted by the

  745. early 300s.

  746. vocation was

  747. applied primarily

  748. just to

  749. clergy.

  750. Clergy were the

  751. called ones.

  752. Everyone else

  753. kind of wasn't

  754. really.

  755. The most

  756. influential thinker

  757. in Western

  758. Christianity in

  759. the 300s was a

  760. guy called

  761. Augustine of

  762. Hippo.

  763. I knew someone's

  764. going to smile

  765. about that,

  766. Hippo.

  767. It's a really

  768. unfortunate name.

  769. It's where he

  770. was from, not

  771. the size of him

  772. or anything like

  773. that.

  774. It wasn't

  775. Augustine the

  776. Hippo, it was

  777. Augustine of

  778. Hippo.

  779. Now, he

  780. distinguished between

  781. two main aspects

  782. of life.

  783. He called the

  784. active life and

  785. the contemplative

  786. life.

  787. The active life

  788. was all the

  789. ways that people

  790. serve one

  791. another, farming,

  792. crafting, trading,

  793. raising kids.

  794. That was the

  795. active life.

  796. The contemplative

  797. life over here

  798. was a life of

  799. prayer and

  800. worship and

  801. spiritual

  802. disciplines.

  803. And while he

  804. said both aspects

  805. of life were

  806. good, he says

  807. the contemplative

  808. life was the

  809. best and

  810. the most

  811. important and

  812. the bit of

  813. life which was

  814. the most

  815. pleasing to

  816. God.

  817. The spiritual

  818. life.

  819. And so if

  820. you, so in

  821. those days what

  822. it meant was to

  823. have a vocation,

  824. a calling from

  825. God meant that

  826. you were a

  827. minister or a

  828. monk.

  829. That's basically

  830. it.

  831. And the

  832. separation of

  833. the physical,

  834. spiritual, the

  835. active,

  836. contemplative life

  837. was further

  838. distorted and I

  839. think to its

  840. ultimate degree

  841. in the 11th

  842. century when

  843. clergy were

  844. mandated to

  845. celibacy and

  846. therefore separated

  847. from ordinary

  848. life activity,

  849. the life of

  850. family and

  851. business and all

  852. that sort of

  853. stuff.

  854. Kind of got

  855. locked away in

  856. a room and

  857. prayed.

  858. That's kind of

  859. it really.

  860. That's the

  861. ultimate distortion.

  862. creation.

  863. The key

  864. development in

  865. understanding work

  866. happened in the

  867. 6th century through

  868. Gregory the Great.

  869. As I said this

  870. morning I've got no

  871. idea why he was

  872. great but that's

  873. his name.

  874. Gregory was a

  875. monk and as a

  876. monk he really

  877. valued the

  878. contemplative life.

  879. And his whole

  880. life went into a

  881. bit of turmoil when

  882. he was called out

  883. of the monastery

  884. in the contemplative

  885. life and thrust

  886. into the papacy with

  887. all the administrative

  888. duties that went

  889. with that.

  890. He was Pope and

  891. so all of a sudden

  892. his life's in

  893. turmoil.

  894. I've got all this

  895. activity but I

  896. value the

  897. contemplative life.

  898. And so his

  899. thinking developed

  900. through the

  901. scriptures where he

  902. actually saw that

  903. there ought not

  904. be a distinction.

  905. His own personal

  906. journey helped him

  907. to see that the

  908. active life of

  909. service to others

  910. was not a

  911. distraction to the

  912. spiritual life.

  913. he concluded

  914. that in fact we

  915. need times of

  916. contemplation but

  917. also times of

  918. action.

  919. He says both of

  920. those things are

  921. needed if we are

  922. going to love

  923. our neighbor, if

  924. we're going to

  925. fulfill the mandate

  926. of Matthew 28 to

  927. use our God-given

  928. gifts for the glory

  929. of God.

  930. And even the

  931. activity life, the

  932. life of action,

  933. drives us back into

  934. contemplation where

  935. we give thanks to

  936. God for his

  937. activity in the

  938. world and we cry

  939. out to him for the

  940. frustrations that we

  941. feel about the

  942. active life.

  943. He says they both

  944. need.

  945. It's a cycle.

  946. That is, he

  947. connected every

  948. aspect of our life

  949. in a unified

  950. whole.

  951. The contemplative

  952. life equipped us

  953. for an active

  954. life of service.

  955. The contemplative

  956. life grounded us,

  957. if you like, in a

  958. life of love of

  959. neighbors, and the

  960. active life kept

  961. us from floating

  962. off into a

  963. bizarre spiritual

  964. world of spiritual

  965. pride and irrelevance

  966. where we saw

  967. ourselves as better

  968. than everyone else.

  969. Now that bit's

  970. crucial.

  971. He saw that those

  972. who live the active

  973. life, and

  974. especially things

  975. like feeding the

  976. hungry, caring for

  977. the sick, teaching

  978. the ignorant, humbling

  979. the proud, he saw

  980. those who pursued

  981. the active life in

  982. faith as being

  983. better equipped to

  984. experience the riches

  985. of the contemplative

  986. life than those who

  987. absorbed all of their

  988. life in spiritual

  989. pursuits.

  990. And so what he does

  991. is he connects my

  992. life of service with

  993. my spiritual life, my

  994. life of faith.

  995. He connects my work

  996. with my faith.

  997. And he goes as

  998. far as to say

  999. that a life of

  1000. spiritual pursuits

  1001. without an activity

  1002. life of loving

  1003. neighbors and serving

  1004. people is actually

  1005. spiritual immaturity.

1006. I would go as far as

  1007. to say that your

  1008. all-Christian education

1009. ought to lead us to

  1010. humble hearts and

  1011. activities of love to

  1012. people.

  1013. And if it doesn't,

  1014. it's distortion.

  1015. The impact of

  1016. Gregory's work was

  1017. that in the Middle

  1018. Ages, Pope Benedict

  1019. came along, loved

1020. what he said, and he

  1021. made manual labor the

  1022. duty of every monk.

  1023. Doll!

  1024. He said, you

  1025. blokes have got to

  1026. start working.

  1027. And so, you know,

  1028. the monasteries became

  1029. orphanages, some of

  1030. them became hospitals,

  1031. and they started

  1032. brewing beer.

  1033. Not sure what the

  1034. connection is, but

  1035. that's kind of what

  1036. they did.

  1037. I suspect that we're

  1038. in the danger of

  1039. propagating this

  1040. historical, sacred,

  1041. secular divide.

  1042. It is easier to

  1043. class what we do

  1044. right now as

  1045. worship, but much

  1046. harder to class what

  1047. you're going to be

  1048. doing this time

  1049. tomorrow or earlier

  1050. tomorrow as

  1051. worship.

1052. It is easy to see

  1053. this is spiritual and

  1054. that is unspiritual.

1055. And we only do it in

  1056. the end because we

1057. need to do it to

  1058. live.

  1059. Without a real sense

  1060. of calling from God,

  1061. our motivation to get

  1062. out of bed tomorrow

  1063. morning will be little

  1064. more than I owe, I owe,

  1065. it's off to work, I go.

1066. Faith in the Lord Jesus

1067. helps me to see the

  1068. dignity of all work.

  1069. That's the point,

  1070. Martin Luther's point

  1071. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  1072. chapter 7.

  1073. Work has dignity

  1074. because it is

  1075. something that God

  1076. does and because we

  1077. do it in God's

  1078. place as his

  1079. representatives.

  1080. The plants and

  1081. animals are called to

  1082. simply reproduce, but

  1083. God gives a specific

  1084. job to us in

  1085. Genesis 2.

  1086. We are called to

  1087. subdue and to have

  1088. dominion or to rule

  1089. over the earth.

  1090. So not only does

  1091. work have dignity,

  1092. but Martin Luther

  1093. particularly, and

  1094. John Calvin's

  1095. exegesis of 1

  1096. Corinthians 7 and

  1097. a couple of other

  1098. bits of the New

  1099. Testament, says that

  1100. all work has

  1101. dignity.

  1102. even unskilled

  1103. simple work, as

  1104. Tim Keller has

  1105. written in this

  1106. book, no task is

  1107. too small a vessel

  1108. to hold the

  1109. immense dignity

  1110. of work given

  1111. by God.

  1112. Luther particularly,

  1113. I think, was

  1114. helpful in this

  1115. point.

  1116. Luther looked at

  1117. lots of places in

  1118. the Bible that

  1119. says God is a

  1120. God who continues

  1121. to provide.

  1122. He feeds every

  1123. living thing.

  1124. And Luther sees

  1125. this as a promise

  1126. that God fulfills.

  1127. And how does he

  1128. fulfill it?

  1129. He feeds you

  1130. through the farmers

  1131. who grow the wheat

  1132. and the truck driver

  1133. who delivers it to

  1134. the silo and the

  1135. trader who sells it

  1136. to the baker and

  1137. the baker's assistant

  1138. who makes the bread.

  1139. That's how he sees

  1140. God fulfills that

  1141. point, that he's

  1142. promised to feed all

  1143. his living things.

  1144. He says that the

  1145. people who do the

  1146. simplest kind of work

  1147. are the fingers of

  1148. God fulfilling his

  1149. promises to you.

  1150. So when I go to a

  1151. restaurant, the

  1152. waitress who brings

  1153. me my food, the

1154. chef in the back who

  1155. prepares it, the

  1156. delivery driver, the

  1157. wholesaler, the

  1158. workers in the food

  1159. processing factory, the

  1160. farmer and all the

  1161. accountants and lawyers

  1162. and business people and

  1163. cleaners and stuff that

  1164. are connected in that

  1165. whole network that is

  1166. the economic food chain

1167. are all being used by

  1168. God to answer my

  1169. prayer, give me this

  1170. day my daily bread.

  1171. All work has

  1172. dignity.

1173. So God is loving me

  1174. through the work of

  1175. other people.

1176. All work is God's way

  1177. of caring for his

  1178. creation.

1179. And I think this is

  1180. really crucial for us

1181. to come to terms with.

  1182. There is no biblical

  1183. foundation for elevating

  1184. doctors over shelf

  1185. packers.

  1186. No biblical foundation

  1187. for it whatsoever.

  1188. Luther gets that from

  1189. 1 Corinthians 7.

  1190. That ought to impact

  1191. our attitude when

  1192. you're pushing the

  1193. shopping trolley on a

  1194. Sunday night trying to

  1195. dodge those people in

  1196. the aisle.

  1197. Notice in 1 Corinthians

  1198. 7 that God calls

  1199. people to different

  1200. positions in life and

  1201. roles in life.

1202. He assigns it to them.

  1203. It's dignifying because

1204. God is the one who

1205. does the calling and he

1206. calls us to be content

  1207. with it.

  1208. So be careful of

  1209. participating in the

  1210. sneering attitude of our

  1211. culture has towards

  1212. people who do simple

  1213. jobs.

  1214. If you lived in

  1215. Seville in February

  1216. this year,

  1217. you would appreciate

  1218. garbage collectors

  1219. because when they

1220. went on strike for a

  1221. few days,

  1222. it almost brought the

  1223. whole city to a

  1224. standstill when

  1225. 6,000 tons of

  1226. rotting waste was

  1227. left on the streets

  1228. and no one knew

  1229. what to do.

  1230. The whole city nearly

  1231. came to a standstill.

  1232. It's in those moments

  1233. you appreciate the

  1234. dude who drives you,

1235. wakes you up in the

  1236. early hours of the

  1237. morning with his

  1238. truck,

  1239. emptying your bins.

  1240. Whenever Luther talked

  1241. about vocation,

  1242. he deliberately used

  1243. the simple and the

  1244. mundane in order to

  1245. elevate the significance

  1246. of everything.

  1247. The father washing

  1248. nappies,

  1249. the maid sweeping the

  1250. floor,

  1251. the brewer making

  1252. good beer.

  1253. By doing our

  1254. appointed work in

  1255. society,

  1256. we become means or

  1257. agents of grace

  1258. through which God

  1259. serves others.

  1260. So friends,

  1261. traditionally we have

  1262. used the language of

  1263. Christian work to

  1264. refer to basically the

1265. sort of stuff that I'm

  1266. doing right now,

  1267. to missionaries,

  1268. to parachurch

  1269. callings.

  1270. This distorted

  1271. understanding exposes

  1272. an inadequate grasp of

  1273. the biblical understanding

  1274. of vocation.

  1275. It will be Monday

  1276. again tomorrow,

  1277. and if you're a

  1278. Christian,

  1279. then you're about to

1280. embark on a week of

  1281. Christian work.

  1282. Paid or not,

  1283. it's irrelevant.

1284. And what will that look

1285. like for you in the work

  1286. that you do?

  1287. Depending on your

  1288. theological position,

  1289. you might say,

  1290. Christian work,

1291. the way to serve God

1292. at work is to work

  1293. with a grateful,

  1294. joyful,

  1295. gospel-centered heart

  1296. through all the ups

  1297. and downs.

1298. Or the way to serve

1299. God at work is to do

  1300. whatever gives you the

  1301. greatest joy and

  1302. passion.

1303. Or the way to serve

1304. God at work is to

1305. make as much money as

  1306. you possibly can so

1307. that you can be as

  1308. generous as you

  1309. possibly can.

1310. Or the way to serve

1311. God at work is to

  1312. further social justice

  1313. in the world.

1314. Or the way to serve

1315. God at work is to

  1316. personally be honest

  1317. and to take every

  1318. opportunity to get

  1319. Jesus into every

  1320. single conversation

  1321. and lead my

  1322. colleagues into

  1323. prayer of sinners

  1324. repentance.

1325. Or the way to serve

1326. God at work is to

  1327. do skillful,

  1328. excellent work.

1329. Or the way to serve

1330. God at work is to

  1331. create beauty.

1332. Or the way to serve

1333. God at work is to

  1334. work from a

  1335. Christian motivation

  1336. to glorify God,

  1337. seeking to engage

  1338. and influence the

  1339. culture to a

  1340. positive end.

  1341. I would probably

  1342. say now that

  1343. Christian work is a

  1344. mixture of all

  1345. those things.

  1346. at any time.

  1347. It could be a

  1348. mixture of all

  1349. those things.

  1350. I love the story

  1351. of Charles Spurgeon.

  1352. Once upon a time,

  1353. you would have

  1354. interviews to become

  1355. members of churches

  1356. and particularly in

  1357. the Baptist church.

  1358. And so Spurgeon,

  1359. the great old preacher,

  1360. would sit there with

  1361. his elders of the

  1362. church and he'd

  1363. interview each person

  1364. individually.

  1365. And one day there,

  1366. he's sitting there

  1367. interviewing a person

  1368. wanting to become

  1369. member of the church

  1370. and he says to

  1371. them, a young

  1372. lady says to

  1373. them, give us

  1374. evidence of the

  1375. transformation of

  1376. the gospel in your

  1377. life.

  1378. Why should, and

  1379. without that evidence

  1380. we're not going to

  1381. give you membership

  1382. of the church.

  1383. And she was a

  1384. cleaner.

  1385. And she said,

  1386. well, ever since I

  1387. have become a

  1388. Christian, she said,

  1389. I no longer sweep

  1390. the dust under the

  1391. mat.

  1392. I actually clean it

1393. up and get rid of

  1394. it.

  1395. And Spurgeon said,

1396. give her entry to the

  1397. church immediately.

  1398. You see, the gospel

  1399. has impacted what she

  1400. does Monday to

  1401. Saturday.

  1402. And so if you're a

  1403. Christian airline pilot,

1404. what does it mean for

1405. you to be a Christian

  1406. airline pilot?

1407. Does it mean you hop

1408. on the plane and you

  1409. use the intercom

  1410. opportunity to captive

  1411. audience to share the

  1412. gospel with them?

  1413. Ladies and gentlemen,

1414. we're just in route to

  1415. LA.

  1416. We've got 16 hours

  1417. together.

1418. Let me just share a

  1419. few thoughts with you

1420. or put two ways to live

  1421. on the screen.

  1422. I mean, is that?

1423. I think most basic and

  1424. fundamental to be a

  1425. Christian airline pilot is

1426. to land the plane and do

  1427. it smoothly.

  1428. Think about the people

  1429. in the plane.

  1430. The most basic thing,

  1431. do your job well.

1432. And if it means that you

  1433. get an opportunity to

  1434. witness to people, most

  1435. likely when the plane's

  1436. going down, there's a

  1437. good opportunity to do

  1438. it.

  1439. Do your work well,

  1440. honours God.

  1441. Billy Graham's wife, the

  1442. great evangelist, had a

  1443. plaque above her kitchen

  1444. sink which read,

  1445. divine services conducted

  1446. here three times daily.

  1447. She got it.

  1448. Ironing your child's

  1449. school uniform and

  1450. changing a nappy that

  1451. overfloweth or mowing

  1452. your lawn are not

1453. simply jobs when they are

  1454. done for God.

1455. God calls us to exercise

  1456. dominion over the

  1457. created order for the

  1458. good of society.

1459. If I do not cut my

1460. grass, do you think my

  1461. neighbours would be happy

  1462. with that?

  1463. Is it loving my

1464. neighbours if I choose not

1465. to cut my grass and let

1466. all the rats and the

1467. snakes and the junk to be

1468. dumped in there and it

  1469. looks like an absolute

  1470. schmuzzle?

  1471. Is that loving my

  1472. neighbour?

1473. When you do it for God,

1474. you do it to love your

1475. neighbour and so you cut

  1476. your grass.

  1477. You deal with the

  1478. weeds.

  1479. It's not just simply a

  1480. job.

1481. It's my calling for the

  1482. good order of society

1483. and for the dominion of

  1484. creation.

1485. Is there one that the

  1486. Bible teaches us in

  1487. Colossians 3.23?

1488. Whatever you do, work at

1489. it with all your heart as

1490. working for the Lord, not

1491. for men, since you know

  1492. that you receive an

  1493. inheritance from the

  1494. Lord as a reward.

1495. It is the Lord God that

  1496. you are serving.

  1497. Let's pray.

  1498. Gracious Father, may your

1499. favour be upon us and

1500. give us hope and purpose

1501. and meaning and joy in our

  1502. weekly work.

1503. Pour out your favour on us

1504. and establish the work of

  1505. our hands.

1506. for the honour of your

  1507. name we pray.

  1508. Amen.
