  1. Hey everyone, good to see you all here.

  2. Good evening, I should say, actually.

  3. I'm super excited to be here today.

  4. Yes, because it is my now second sermon, because of this morning.

  5. But more because I get to talk to you about God's word, from God's word.

  6. And that's a very exciting thing.

  7. So Sam gave me this passage a few weeks ago.

  8. And it's a great passage.

  9. And so I prepared eagerly.

  10. So let's pray before we get into it, shall we?

  11. So, Heavenly Father, we thank you for the great things that you've given us,

  12. including your son, Jesus, Lord.

  13. I ask that tonight you would open our ears so that we can hear your message, Lord,

  14. and give us hearts that are willing to change for you.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. I'm not sure if you've ever had that moment of clarity in your life,

  18. where you realize that after this point in time or in this situation,

  19. things have to change.

  20. They can't be the same anymore.

  21. There are some pretty famous examples of this,

  22. such as getting married or having children.

  23. But I haven't experienced either of those yet.

  24. So I'll give you one that I do remember and that I have experienced.

  25. I can tell you without any shame that I was an adorable child.

  26. It's a fact.

  27. And at year four, they presented us with an option of joining the music program at my school,

  28. Trafalgar Elementary, or if you're in the French immersion class, Trafalgar Elementary.

  29. And I desperately wanted to be a part of the music program.

  30. I wasn't great at any or many courses at school.

  31. And music just seemed like so much fun.

  32. You could make noise.

  33. It was joyous.

  34. And so I wanted to be a part of it so bad.

  35. And so I applied.

  36. I auditioned, rather, and successfully became a part of the music program at my school.

  37. And I was over the moon about it.

  38. I was the only trombone player in the whole school.

  39. How much fun is that?

  40. But all my joy came to a sudden halt one day.

  41. Let me set the scene for you.

  42. We're in the gym.

  43. You know, kind of the same wood paneling, actually, as we have in the church.

  44. About 50 kids, all tiny, lots of dark-haired clarinet and flute players,

  45. and one small blonde kid with freckles in the back of the room,

  46. making a sound like a baby elephant being strangled to death, just loud as anything.

  47. And I had no idea what I was doing was incorrect in any way.

  48. I was happy to make noise.

  49. But after class, my teacher came to me and said,

  50. if I could play specific notes for her.

  51. I had no idea that there were such things as notes,

  52. or any idea how to play them.

  53. I knew I either had to learn how to play notes, as she said,

  54. or stop playing altogether.

  55. Fortunately enough, I learned my instrument just well enough

  56. to leave it behind when I came here.

  57. But the reason for that story is that in the passage today,

  58. we have the biggest kind of moment of clarity in all of history on display to us.

  59. The greatest truth being revealed of all time.

  60. And we need to get to the heart of that,

  61. because it has an infinite amount of implications for us as followers of Jesus.

  62. Now, like always, there are three questions that I have in my head

  63. when I read the book of Mark, which I inherited from my older brother,

  64. because he's very wise.

  65. Again, who is Jesus?

  66. What has he done?

  67. And what does that mean for us?

  68. So first, who is Jesus?

  69. Again, the importance of this question cannot be stated enough.

  70. It is central to the gospel of Mark.

  71. It's so important that Jesus asks it himself, unprompted, in the passage today,

  72. which is such a rare occurrence for Jesus to do.

  73. And I think a little context would help us understand more.

  74. Does anyone other than Tashi know the first sentence of the book of Mark?

  75. Or Liz?

  76. Anyone else?

  77. It says,

  78. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  79. The first sentence in the book identifies Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah.

  80. Lays it out plain.

  81. But there isn't a clear occasion of anyone identifying him as that

  82. until this point in the book.

  83. It's a mystery.

  84. So for a while now, Jesus and his disciples have been traveling around the area of ancient Palestine,

  85. teaching, preaching, healing, exercising, and possibly exercising.

  86. But this whole time, Jesus has been doing miraculous things,

  87. with our expectation being that people would see him for who he really is.

  88. But it hasn't happened.

  89. People don't see it.

  90. Earlier in this chapter, the disciples are worried about their lack of food,

  91. specifically bread,

  92. immediately after Jesus has just finished feeding a humongous group of people

  93. for the second time in front of them.

  94. And you can see by his reaction in verse 21 of chapter 8

  95. that he expects them to see what's really going on,

  96. and he's frustrated that they aren't.

  97. So we come back to the question asked by Jesus himself in the chapter.

  98. Who do people say that I am?

  99. Meaning, what have the people put together

  100. after seeing my miracles, or hearing my teaching,

  101. or even just hearing about me?

  102. What have they put together?

  103. What is the fruit of my labors, Jesus is wondering?

  104. And the answers the disciples give him,

  105. that the people are saying, aren't bad answers.

  106. They're in an appropriate direction.

  107. But they're still wrong.

  108. We have John the Baptist,

  109. who died a few months ago before this story.

  110. We have Elijah, who died a few hundred years ago before this story.

  111. And we have generally the great prophets,

  112. who are in the back half of the Old Testament,

  113. none of whom have appeared to Israel for also another 800 years.

  114. But these are all people that are great.

  115. The heroes of Israel, the paragons of the nation,

  116. the people who they think,

  117. he must be great, he must be like one of these men.

  118. The best they can think of.

  119. But like I said, these answers are incorrect.

  120. Jesus asks the question again,

  121. but to his disciples this time,

  122. specifically to them,

  123. the people who he's taught the most.

  124. He's handpicked them to follow him.

  125. They have seen more and done more

  126. than we could ever imagine from the Bible that we have.

  127. So they must have the right answer.

  128. Yeah?

  129. Well, thankfully, Peter,

  130. who's known for putting his foot in his mouth

  131. at every opportunity,

  132. actually gets it right in verse 29.

  133. It's an amazing moment.

  134. It's as simple as an answer can be to that question

  135. while also being as truthful

  136. as any possible response that could be given.

  137. You are the Christ, he says.

  138. And there we have it.

  139. That moment of clarity,

  140. that thing that changes everything.

  141. It changes everything.

  142. Jesus isn't like John the Baptist

  143. or Elijah or the prophets.

  144. He's on an entirely different playing field.

  145. He is astronomically more powerful and important

  146. than any of those men are.

  147. They aren't good enough to be like him.

  148. They aren't anywhere near who Jesus is.

  149. Jesus is the Christ.

  150. It's not just another title of his.

  151. It has weight.

  152. It has meaning.

  153. And it shouldn't be a mystery to us

  154. how important this title is.

  155. It conveys the entirety of God's plan

  156. throughout time and history.

  157. You know, promises to Adam and Eve

  158. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  159. or to Abraham in Genesis 12

  160. or to Moses and the people of Israel

  161. in Exodus 19

  162. or to David in 2 Samuel 7.

  163. The list keeps on going.

  164. It goes on and on and on.

  165. And each one builds upon the idea

  166. of who this Christ is,

  167. how important he is,

  168. how powerful he is.

  169. They just add weight to the person of Jesus.

  170. When Peter says to him,

  171. you are the Christ,

  172. all the things go boom.

  173. This is who he is.

  174. It means all of these things.

  175. I love how amazing this part of Mark actually is.

  176. Something I learned a while ago

  177. and was reminded in class this term

  178. is the structure of Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  179. Jesus has just finished healing a blind man

  180. of his physical blindness.

  181. It's kind of a weird story.

  182. He spits in his face

  183. and the guy kind of sees trees

  184. and then sees people again.

  185. It's kind of strange.

  186. But then he moves down

  187. and he heals the disciples and us

  188. of our spiritual blindness.

  189. The answers that the disciples give

  190. about the people when he asks them

  191. shows that they can't see who he really is.

  192. They haven't put it together.

  193. And it wouldn't be possible

  194. without his teaching and miracles

  195. and allowing us to see who he really is.

  196. It's a miracle.

  197. Jesus' display of himself to us.

  198. And he's chosen this part

  199. in chapter 8 of the book of Mark

  200. to change that,

  201. to reveal it to us.

  202. And so who he is

  203. directly affects what he has come to do.

  204. in verse 31.

  205. That is what the Christ has come to do.

  206. Take a look at it.

  207. The all-powerful promised one of God

  208. who has come to save the world

  209. comes to do it through pain,

  210. through suffering,

  211. through rejection,

  212. and through death.

  213. And I think this idea

  214. has lost a bit of its impact on us.

  215. We take the concept

  216. that Jesus can actually die

  217. on face value.

  218. But it's a miracle.

  219. It's a miracle of God.

  220. It's a tragic one.

  221. It's a sad one.

  222. But it is,

  223. nonetheless,

  224. miraculous.

  225. Mark has just spent

  226. the first half of the gospel

  227. showing how powerful

  228. Jesus actually is.

  229. If you read chapter 5,

  230. you see that Jesus has the power

  231. to exercise demons,

  232. to heal the sick in masses,

  233. and to raise a little girl

  234. back from the dead.

  235. So how can a man

  236. who has the power over death

  237. actually die?

  238. It doesn't make sense.

  239. It just doesn't.

  240. And that's what Peter is thinking.

  241. Jesus talks about himself dying,

  242. and Peter says,

  243. that's not how the plan works.

  244. The Savior is not supposed to die.

  245. He sees it as like a misfortune

  246. or tragedy that needs to be avoided.

  247. He's saying,

  248. you're talking smack, Jesus.

  249. That's not how it works.

  250. The idea that Christ has to die

  251. is so contrary

  252. to the human way of thinking.

  253. You can see it in our culture

  254. all over the place,

  255. you know,

  256. in our movies,

  257. in our books,

  258. our TV.

  259. Our heroes are,

  260. you know,

  261. majestic and strong people.

  262. They succeed in their acts

  263. of heroism

  264. by not needing to die

  265. because dying equals failure.

  266. Right?

  267. As a teenager,

  268. I was a massive fan

  269. of comic books.

  270. I still kind of am,

  271. only I don't have the money

  272. to spend them anymore.

  273. But in particular,

  274. I love the stories

  275. that were engaging.

  276. You have a hero

  277. who has a struggle

  278. he has to overcome.

  279. And he has to use

  280. his powers at his disposal

  281. or his tools or whatever.

  282. And he overcomes them.

  283. But there was

  284. an interesting phenomenon

  285. in the comic book world

  286. that I eventually

  287. got kind of jaded with,

  288. which is the idea

  289. that comic book heroes

  290. never really die.

  291. It's a thing called retconning,

  292. which means

  293. retroactive continuity,

  294. where they come back to life

  295. in various ways.

  296. But I think it's because

  297. that human idea of

  298. he can't be a hero

  299. if he ever dies.

  300. That negates

  301. all the work

  302. that they have done

  303. because it's a failure

  304. as a character of theirs.

  305. It's that human idea

  306. that death is just

  307. a defeat of heroism.

  308. Thankfully, God doesn't think

  309. the same way we do.

  310. Very thankfully.

  311. The work that Jesus has to do

  312. is perfectly in line

  313. with God's way of thinking

  314. because it's God's plan.

  315. And it's so different

  316. from how we would ever

  317. even imagine

  318. being saved by somebody.

  319. Which is also why

  320. the completion of his work

  321. is still utterly bewildering to us.

  322. Not only does the guy

  323. who has control over death

  324. have to die,

  325. he also comes back to life.

  326. It's even more impossible

  327. than the guy

  328. who has control over death

  329. dying in the first place.

  330. It's amazing.

  331. So who Jesus is

  332. as the Christ

  333. affects what he has to do

  334. and will do.

  335. And both of these

  336. bear tremendous importance

  337. for us.

  338. Which brings us

  339. to the last section

  340. of the passage,

  341. verses 34

  342. to chapter 9, verse 1.

  343. It's also worth noticing

  344. that these words

  345. are not spoken

  346. to his 12 disciples anymore,

  347. but to the gathering

  348. of people who are

  349. following him.

  350. And so they also

  351. apply to us

  352. if we seek to follow him.

  353. We have the third

  354. subtle miracle

  355. of this passage.

  356. In that we can actually

  357. be saved.

  358. There is hope for us.

  359. It's a miracle.

  360. What Jesus' death

  361. and resurrection

  362. mean for us

  363. is our salvation.

  364. And with that,

  365. the expectation

  366. that we follow him

  367. as the Lord

  368. who has saved us.

  369. They go hand in hand together.

  370. The invitation

  371. for salvation

  372. for us

  373. isn't just a simple

  374. contract to sign, though.

  375. There is fine print,

  376. only that it's not fine,

  377. but bold,

  378. double underlined,

  379. highlighted,

  380. and in a gigantic font.

  381. It's big.

  382. It's there.

  383. What is expected

  384. of us as followers

  385. is an enormous amount,

  386. and Jesus holds

  387. no punches back.

  388. Take another look

  389. at those verses.

  390. There are about

  391. three things

  392. that are expected

  393. of us as followers

  394. that are all

  395. equally as daunting

  396. to attempt.

  397. Let's see.

  398. There is deny yourself,

  399. take up your cross

  400. and follow him,

  401. and lose your life

  402. for the sake of Jesus

  403. and the gospel.

  404. All of these are,

  405. again, reversals,

  406. contrary to

  407. how we humans

  408. think our lives

  409. should be.

  410. It's just

  411. a flipped up world.

  412. It's not the way

  413. we think like.

  414. It's just the same

  415. as before.

  416. Our way of thinking

  417. isn't the same

  418. as God's way of thinking

  419. or the way God

  420. plans things,

  421. but it's only through

  422. God's plan

  423. and God's way of thinking

  424. that we can actually

  425. be saved.

  426. So if we're going to do this,

  427. what is expected of us?

  428. Because the examples

  429. given by Jesus

  430. are kind of puzzling,

  431. but they're not very clear

  432. exactly.

  433. So first,

  434. the idea of denying yourself,

  435. taking up your cross

  436. and following him,

  437. it's not talking about

  438. living a life

  439. of austerity,

  440. of being poor,

  441. that whole Buddhist notion

  442. of self-denial,

  443. so the material items

  444. in your life

  445. don't bring you happiness

  446. so you have to deny them

  447. and reject them.

  448. It's not talking about that.

  449. What it is talking about

  450. is a life of humble submission,

  451. a life example

  452. off of what

  453. Jesus himself has done.

  454. There is no greater

  455. denial of self

  456. in the history of time

  457. than the creator

  458. and owner of the universe

  459. coming down

  460. and being born as a human,

  461. living a life of suffering,

  462. and then dying for us.

  463. There's no greater

  464. example of it.

  465. And that is the image

  466. that we are to follow

  467. in our taking up our cross

  468. and following him

  469. in our life.

  470. We are to put down

  471. those things

  472. that reach up

  473. and towards us

  474. from following Jesus

  475. and doing it

  476. them instead.

  477. It's a path of rejection

  478. of the world

  479. and the people

  480. and this is why

  481. Jesus brings up

  482. the idea of being

  483. ashamed of him.

  484. It's such a temptation,

  485. isn't it?

  486. When you're at work

  487. and you just want

  488. to get things done

  489. and somebody comes

  490. and asks you

  491. what you did

  492. with your Sunday.

  493. or when you're at uni

  494. and there's that kind

  495. of air of mutual views

  496. and sharing them

  497. and everyone kind

  498. of appreciates each other

  499. until the topic goes

  500. to something like

  501. gay marriage,

  502. even regular marriage

  503. nowadays,

  504. and you realize that

  505. their views

  506. don't really extend

  507. to you.

  508. They don't really

  509. accept you

  510. as being valid anymore.

  511. or you're in school

  512. and your friends

  513. ask you why you

  514. haven't partied

  515. with them on the weekend,

  516. why you're not

  517. getting drunk with them.

  518. And these questions

  519. come up and you just

  520. kind of shrink inside.

  521. You don't want

  522. to talk about them,

  523. you just want to

  524. kind of shrink away

  525. and avoid the question.

  526. That human reaction,

  527. that natural reaction

  528. that we have,

  529. I am a massive culprit

  530. of those many points

  531. of my life.

  532. But the point

  533. of this passage

  534. isn't to despair,

  535. but to have hope

  536. in who Jesus is instead.

  537. Because who Jesus is

  538. and what he has done

  539. for us

  540. is more than enough

  541. for us to endure

  542. a temporary amount

  543. of discomfort.

  544. It even says

  545. in John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  546. that if the world

  547. hates us,

  548. it's because it

  549. hated him first.

  550. And the moment

  551. of clarity I deal

  552. of talking about

  553. is here,

  554. it's right here

  555. in this passage.

  556. It's the truth

  557. that is ultimately

  558. more valuable

  559. than anything

  560. Uriah could ever

  561. be worth.

  562. As it says

  563. in verse 37,

  564. what can we offer

  565. in exchange for our soul?

  566. What are our lives worth?

  567. You could have

  568. everything in the entire earth

  569. and your life

  570. would be nothing

  571. compared to the work

  572. of Jesus and his life

  573. and a life

  574. following him.

  575. This passage in Mark

  576. is so humongous.

  577. It just changes everything.

  578. It's like that street

  579. outside from which

  580. we can reach

  581. every corner of Sydney.

  582. We can go

  583. north, south, east, and west.

  584. This passage

  585. kind of spreads

  586. over every corner

  587. of our lives

  588. and affects

  589. every area.

  590. It reaches those places

  591. and demands

  592. that we follow him.

  593. you see the truth

  594. of Jesus

  595. on display

  596. as him being

  597. the Christ

  598. and it demands

  599. that you be changed

  600. for him.

  601. It demands

  602. that we live

  603. a life

  604. of humble submission

  605. like he did

  606. in order to be saved.

  607. and it gets rid

  608. of those

  609. dark corners

  610. of our mind

  611. that kind of

  612. distract us

  613. in those situations

  614. and helps us

  615. to keep walking

  616. on that path

  617. Jesus has already

  618. trodden out for us.

  619. And so the truth

  620. of Jesus

  621. being the Christ

  622. here in Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  623. chapter 8

  624. and the work

  625. he has done

  626. of coming,

  627. suffering,

  628. and dying

  629. for us

  630. means an infinite

  631. amount to us

  632. and it is awesome

  633. enough for us

  634. to follow him

  635. in every area

  636. of our lives

  637. and change for him

  638. and suffer for him

  639. so that we can be

  640. saved by him.

  641. Amen.
