  1. I recently passed a personal milestone just over a month ago, 20 years as a disciple of the Lord Jesus.

  2. It was the 31st of May, 1993.

  3. I was sitting in the big shed on the Katoomba side, up at Katoomba, on the Christian Convention side in Katoomba.

  4. And I remember it specifically as a Friday night.

  5. It was cold, but I remember the words of John Wesley, my heart was strangely warmed as my chains fell off.

  6. My heart was free and I rose and I went forth and followed him, the Lord Jesus.

  7. And I've been exposed all of my life up until then to the Bible.

  8. Prayer was pretty much a normal thing.

  9. I even gave money to Christian organizations.

  10. But up until that point, I had trusted in myself and not Jesus.

  11. And the biggest and immediate change that happened in my life when I became a Christian was a love for Jesus' church.

  12. It didn't exist up until that point.

  13. I was suspicious and even judgmental of the church.

  14. But a love for Christ went hand in hand with a love for Christ's church.

  15. And I think the New Testament expects it.

  16. Listen to how Paul puts it to the Ephesian church.

  17. Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy,

  18. cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.

  19. And present her to himself as a radiant church without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish,

  20. but holy and blameless.

  21. The church that Christ loves is one of the key features of God's plan for time and eternity.

  22. All who love the Lord Jesus Christ ought to love the church,

  23. which is the object of Christ's love.

  24. And so I would suggest from the New Testament that there is something wrong with professing Christians

  25. who do not identify with the church and love it and invest themselves in it and carry its needs on their hearts.

  26. Now when I say love for the church,

  27. I don't mean love for the institutional church.

  28. Just need to clarify that.

  29. Those who love the church in its institutional form

  30. will have an enthusiasm for its liturgy, ceremony, bureaucracy,

  31. and the labor that keeps the wheels turning.

  32. It will express itself in a strong interest in preservation,

  33. maintenance, and the nurture within a closed group,

  34. accompanied by an indifference,

  35. or even an opposition to revival, evangelism, and conversions that ultimately drive change.

  36. The church that I fell in love with is the New Testament picture of God's people

  37. getting together on a regular basis to do the things that the church does.

  38. To praise and pray,

  39. to hear the word of God through preaching and teaching,

  40. to practice fellowship and pastoral care with mutual encouragement and accountability,

  41. to exalt and honor Jesus Christ,

  42. specifically by word and song and sacrament,

  43. to reach out locally and cross-culturally

  44. in order to share Christ with people who need him.

  45. A church that sees itself not as an institution,

  46. but as Mission HQ

  47. for the glory of God.

  48. It's a love for the church that is expressed in a constant quest

  49. for faithfulness and holiness and vitality

  50. in our individual and corporate life.

  51. A love that results in a deep care

  52. for the faithfulness and holiness and obedience

  53. and spiritual vitality and a missional effectiveness of the church.

  54. A love that is committed to praying and planning and sacrificing

  55. and laboring and praying again

  56. for the reformation and revitalization of the people of God.

  57. That is what the next 30 days of time to build is all about.

  58. What is immediate obvious to most of us

  59. is that we have a building project.

  60. It's kind of obvious.

  61. It's been in process for three years.

  62. Today we are voting as a church

  63. as to whether we will proceed or not.

  64. And if we do,

  65. and I've suggested that we should,

  66. then one of the purposes

  67. of the next 30 days of time to build

  68. is to raise the almost $1 million

  69. we need to fund the project.

  70. But even if we vote not to proceed with the building project,

  71. this stuff's staying here

  72. and we're proceeding with time to build.

  73. Because what is most important to me in time to build

  74. is the building, reforming,

  75. and revitalization of the church,

  76. the people of God.

  77. Which is why time to build has three purposes.

  78. Three other purposes, I should say.

  79. And that is spiritual growth across the church,

  80. the building of fellowship,

  81. and the building of gratitude.

  82. Even as we seek to redevelop our facilities,

  83. the church that Christ is building

  84. is the community of men and women,

  85. boys and girls,

  86. who have been redeemed by God the Father

  87. through the finished work of the Savior,

  88. Jesus Christ, on the cross.

  89. This building means hearts being changed

  90. so that repentance and faith and obedience

  91. become more and more the pattern of our lives.

  92. And the evidence of such building work

  93. will be the humility and purity

  94. and love and zeal for God and His Word,

  95. a devotion to pray,

  96. a love for the people of God,

  97. a deep passion for those who need Christ.

  98. That is biblical church growth.

  99. And Nehemiah will instruct us in the next 30 days

  100. because Nehemiah is about building saints

  101. even as he seeks to rebuild Jerusalem.

  102. Nehemiah loves the glory of God

  103. and the people of God

  104. more than the place where they came together.

  105. His passion is for the relationship

  106. between God and His people,

  107. not so much the walls of Jerusalem.

  108. Nehemiah was governor in Jerusalem

  109. for 13 years.

  110. It took him 51 days to build the walls.

  111. Nehemiah starts in chapter 1, verse 1,

  112. thousands of kilometers away

  113. from their homeland of God's people.

  114. Nehemiah is writing in his diary

  115. in the month of Kislev in the 20th year.

  116. That's about 140 years

  117. after the most devastating event

  118. in the history of Israel.

  119. An event that they were warned would happen,

  120. but it didn't cause them

  121. to reform their life together

  122. in order to stop it from happening.

  123. And if you've read the Old Testament,

  124. then you would know

  125. that God had formed a people for Himself.

  126. He had called them by name.

  127. He had given them His law.

  128. He had given them a land.

  129. He had made His presence

  130. to dwell amongst them

  131. in the temple in Jerusalem.

  132. And as His special covenant people,

  133. Israel was to shine as a light

  134. to the world around

  135. so that the nations around Israel

  136. could see how brilliant it was

  137. to live in friendship with Yahweh,

  138. the God of Israel.

  139. Israel instead turned away from Yahweh.

  140. They followed other gods

  141. and they made idols.

  142. They loved their wealth and their luxury.

  143. They despised the word of God.

  144. And despite repeated warnings from God

  145. through the prophets

  146. that He would punish His people

  147. for their rebellion,

  148. they just kept turning their backs on Him.

  149. So in 587 BC,

  150. Jerusalem finally fell

  151. to the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar

  152. and it was utterly destroyed.

  153. The elite of the people

  154. were put in chains and dragged off.

  155. The king's eyes were put out.

  156. His wife was killed.

  157. The temple itself,

  158. the place of God's presence

  159. with His people

  160. was sacked and left in ruins.

  161. It's difficult, I think,

  162. to express the humiliation

  163. and catastrophe

  164. that this event was.

  165. Not to minimize it,

  166. but this is not like

  167. the occupation of France by Germany.

  168. This is not the annihilation

  169. of a native culture

  170. or the brutality

  171. of ethnic cleansing.

  172. It is as if Yahweh,

  173. the God of Israel,

  174. was dead.

  175. God had attached His name

  176. and His glory

  177. to that place

  178. and its temple

  179. in Jerusalem.

  180. And now all of the evidence

  181. points to the fact

  182. that He has abandoned

  183. His promises.

  184. The God who would never

  185. abandon His promises.

  186. And He must be dead.

  187. And so for many,

  188. the exile was the death of hope.

  189. But after 70 years in exile,

  190. God began to do a new thing

  191. to draw His people

  192. back to Jerusalem.

  193. Nehemiah is one of God's people

  194. still left in Babylon.

  195. But He had risen

  196. to the absolute pinnacle

  197. of the Persian corporate ladder.

  198. He was cupbearer to the king,

  199. King Artaxerxes,

  200. the most powerful man

  201. in the planet in the day.

  202. Nehemiah was the only person

  203. in the kingdom

  204. who had access to the king

  205. every day

  206. and several times a day.

  207. He had to be

  208. utterly trustworthy

  209. and an impressive individual.

  210. But his occupation

  211. is not his preoccupation.

  212. Nehemiah's interest

  213. was not his career

  214. nor himself.

  215. It was the glory of God

  216. and the people of God.

  217. His heart lies

  218. in his homeland.

  219. God had started

  220. to bring His people

  221. back to Jerusalem

  222. after 70 years of exile.

  223. But in verse 2,

  224. Nehemiah gets some bad news

  225. from home.

  226. Those who survived the exile

  227. and are back in the province

  228. are in great trouble

  229. and disgrace.

  230. The walls of Jerusalem

  231. is broken down

  232. and its gates

  233. have been burned with fire.

  234. And verse 4

  235. is Nehemiah's response

  236. to this news.

  237. When I heard these things,

  238. I sat down and wept.

  239. For some days,

  240. I mourned

  241. and I fasted

  242. and I prayed

  243. before the God of heaven.

  244. He sits down

  245. and he weeps

  246. and he mourns

  247. and he fasts

  248. and he prays

  249. for the city.

  250. Verse 4 indicates

  251. that Nehemiah's grief

  252. and distress

  253. continued for some months.

  254. Most likely,

  255. he stayed in that position

  256. or in that state

  257. for at least

  258. four months.

  259. But his concern

  260. is more than a ruined city.

  261. It is what this ruined city

  262. represents.

  263. Jerusalem was to be

  264. the center,

  265. the light,

  266. the hope for the nations

  267. as God dwelt

  268. amongst his much loved people.

  269. But it is in ruins.

  270. It is a disgrace.

  271. His concern is more

  272. about what it says

  273. about God

  274. and God's people.

  275. The prayer that dominates

  276. chapter 1

  277. reveals that

  278. his deepest sorrow

  279. is over rebellion

  280. and faithlessness

  281. and faithlessness

  282. first and foremost

  283. not over broken walls.

  284. His prayer

  285. first and foremost

  286. looks to the character

  287. of God,

  288. the God that

  289. it would appear

  290. had died.

  291. And he says,

  292. O Lord God of heaven,

  293. the great and awesome God

  294. who keeps his covenant

  295. of love with those

  296. who love him

  297. and obey his commands.

  298. Israel's God

  299. is a great

  300. and awesome God

  301. who is not

  302. to be trifled with.

  303. All the hosts

  304. of the heavenly realm

  305. bow in his presence.

  306. This God

  307. expects to be obeyed.

  308. But he's also

  309. a faithful God

  310. who is committed

  311. to his covenant

  312. of love.

  313. He is a God

  314. who has made us

  315. for himself,

  316. who reveals his kindness

  317. and mercy

  318. and gentleness

  319. to those he loves.

  320. And it is

  321. this knowledge

  322. knowledge

  323. of the character

  324. of God

  325. that leads him

  326. first to confess sin

  327. and secondly

  328. to plead

  329. the promises

  330. of God.

  331. And so in the middle

  332. of verse 6

  333. Nehemiah acknowledges

  334. the failure

  335. of God's people.

  336. He says,

  337. I confess the sins

  338. we Israelites

  339. including myself

  340. and my father's house

  341. have committed

  342. against you.

  343. We have acted

  344. very wickedly

  345. towards you.

  346. We have not

  347. obeyed the commands

  348. decrees

  349. and laws

  350. that you gave

  351. your servant

  352. Moses.

  353. Notice that there is

  354. no us and them

  355. accusation going on

  356. here,

  357. but he is completely

  358. identifying himself

  359. with the failure

  360. of the people

  361. of God.

  362. And this little

  363. prayer of confession

  364. here is not just

  365. some mere polite

  366. concession

  367. because as a culture

  368. or as a church

  369. we might admit

  370. well no one's

  371. really perfect

  372. in the end.

  373. Ezekiel 36

  374. speaks of the time

  375. when God would

  376. bring his people

  377. back from exile

  378. and as part

  379. of that returning

  380. it says

  381. in verse 31

  382. of Ezekiel 36

  383. then you'll remember

  384. your evil ways

  385. and wicked deeds

  386. and you will

  387. loathe yourselves

  388. for your sins

  389. and your detestable

  390. practices.

  391. Be ashamed

  392. and disgraced

  393. for your conduct

  394. O house

  395. of Israel.

  396. And so his prayer

  397. here is not just

  398. some mere

  399. acknowledgement

  400. of oh well no one's

  401. really perfect

  402. in the end.

  403. His contrition

  404. is an intense

  405. loathing

  406. of sin.

  407. and this is the same

  408. contrition

  409. and acknowledgement

  410. and remorse

  411. and loathing

  412. of our sin

  413. that the gospel

  414. requires of us

  415. when we come

  416. to Christ.

  417. Our grasp

  418. of the wonder

  419. of the mercy

  420. of the Lord

  421. Jesus

  422. is directly

  423. proportional

  424. to our grasp

  425. of the desperate

  426. sinful state

  427. that we are in.

  428. superficial

  429. grasp

  430. of sin

  431. leads to

  432. superficial

  433. grasp

  434. of grace.

  435. No mourning

  436. for sin

  437. leads to

  438. no joy

  439. in the gospel.

  440. And if your

  441. psychoanalysis

  442. disagrees

  443. with that

  444. they're wrong.

  445. They're wrong.

  446. Sin

  447. is at the

  448. core of

  449. Nehemiah's

  450. problem

  451. and Israel's

  452. problem

  453. and our

  454. problem.

  455. Every time

  456. we disobey

  457. God

  458. we are seeking

  459. to break

  460. away from

  461. him

  462. and to put

  463. a barrier

  464. in our

  465. fellowship

  466. with him

  467. and that

  468. is why

  469. Jerusalem

  470. is in

  471. ruins.

  472. You see

  473. Nehemiah

  474. could have

  475. prayed in

  476. that moment

  477. for God

  478. to restore

  479. Jerusalem

  480. to its

  481. former glory.

  482. Let's have

  483. a prayer

  484. meeting

  485. get together

  486. let's pray

  487. for those

  488. walls in

  489. Jerusalem.

  490. Artaxerxes

  491. could have

  492. pulled out

  493. his wallet

  494. as he

  495. did

  496. but he

  497. could have

  498. pulled out

  499. a bigger

  500. wallet

  501. pulled out

  502. the treasure

  503. chest

  504. like some

  505. Middle Eastern

  506. prince

  507. with lots

  508. of oil

  509. and built

  510. a spectacular

  511. building in

  512. Jerusalem.

  513. He could have

  514. made the walls

  515. bigger,

  516. wider and

  517. higher and

  518. he could have

  519. made Jerusalem

  520. into a resort

  521. town in the

  522. Middle East

  523. but it would

  524. have meant

  525. nothing.

  526. It would

  527. have looked

  528. good

  529. but it

  530. would have

  531. meant

  532. nothing.

  533. And we

  534. can fix

  535. up our

  536. facilities

  537. but they

  538. will not

  539. lead to

  540. greater

  541. intimacy

  542. with Christ

  543. or joy

  544. as a

  545. Christian

  546. or to

  547. God's

  548. blessing

  549. being poured

  550. out upon

  551. us.

  552. repentance

  553. and brokenness

  554. of heart

  555. before God

  556. is the

  557. only path

  558. to intimacy

  559. and communion

  560. with the

  561. God of

  562. heaven.

  563. Without the

  564. repentance

  565. there will

  566. be no

  567. return

  568. to God.

  569. There will

  570. be no

  571. return to

  572. Jerusalem.

  573. Nehemiah

  574. knew that

  575. the rebuilding

  576. of the

  577. people of

  578. God

  579. into the

  580. people of

  581. repentance

  582. and faith

  583. is where

  584. the real

  585. restoration

  586. work needed

  587. to be

  588. done

  589. and it

  590. started

  591. with him.

  592. The second

  593. part of

  594. Nehemiah's

  595. prayer is an

  596. appeal to

  597. God's

  598. steadfast

  599. love.

  600. It's again

  601. an appeal

  602. to God's

  603. character.

  604. This is

  605. where we

  606. see he

  607. is a

  608. man of

  609. faith

  610. and of

  611. faith in

  612. the promises

  613. of God.

  614. If you

  615. cast your

  616. eye down

  617. to verses

  618. 8 to

  619. 10,

  620. Nehemiah

  621. quotes the

  622. promises of

  623. God that

  624. God had

  625. made to

  626. Moses in

  627. Deuteronomy.

  628. Deuteronomy

  629. 30 describes

  630. exactly the

  631. situation

  632. Nehemiah and

  633. the people of

  634. God are in

  635. right now.

  636. And it

  637. gives a

  638. promise that

  639. Nehemiah

  640. remembers.

  641. And here

  642. it is.

  643. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30:2

  644. chapter 30

  645. verse 2.

  646. When you and

  647. your children

  648. return to the

  649. Lord your

  650. God and

  651. obey him

  652. with all

  653. of your

  654. heart and

  655. with all

  656. of your

  657. soul,

  658. according to

  659. everything that

  660. I've commanded

  661. you today,

  662. then the

  663. Lord your

  664. God will

  665. restore your

  666. fortunes and

  667. have compassion

  668. on you and

  669. gather you from

  670. all the nations

  671. from where you

  672. are scattered.

  673. And Nehemiah

  674. knows that

  675. they're right at

  676. that point of

  677. history that

  678. Deuteronomy 30

  679. is talking about.

  680. And his

  681. prayer to

  682. God is

  683. reminding God

  684. of his

  685. promise.

  686. He has

  687. faith that

  688. when God

  689. promises

  690. something,

  691. he will

  692. do it.

  693. That's

  694. his

  695. confidence.

  696. It is

  697. this

  698. knowledge

  699. and

  700. confidence

  701. that God

  702. is awesome

  703. and powerful

  704. and faithful

  705. to his

  706. promises that

  707. sees

  708. Nehemiah

  709. make

  710. faithful,

  711. wise,

  712. gutsy

  713. decisions for

  714. the glory

  715. of God.

  716. His

  717. confidence is

  718. not in

  719. himself as

  720. the cup

  721. bearer to

  722. the king.

  723. his

  724. confidence is

  725. not even

  726. in King

  727. Artaxerxes,

  728. the most

  729. powerful man

  730. in the

  731. planet.

  732. Look at

  733. the end of

  734. chapter 1

  735. and how he

  736. expresses this

  737. relationship.

  738. Give your

  739. servant success

  740. today by

  741. granting him

  742. favour in

  743. the presence

  744. of this

  745. man.

  746. I was

  747. cup bearer

  748. to the

  749. king.

  750. He might

  751. have had

  752. unprecedented

  753. influence in

  754. the presence

  755. of the most

  756. powerful man

  757. on the

  758. planet.

  759. But compared

  760. to the

  761. almighty God

  762. of Israel,

  763. he is

  764. nothing more

  765. than a

  766. drinks boy

  767. for the

  768. king.

  769. And

  770. compared to

  771. the mighty

  772. God,

  773. Artaxerxes,

  774. the most

  775. powerful man

  776. on the

  777. planet,

  778. is simply

  779. this man.

  780. Nothing

  781. more.

  782. Nehemiah's

  783. confidence is

  784. in his

  785. God.

  786. You see it

  787. again in

  788. chapter 2

  789. verse 4,

  790. when the

  791. king actually

  792. asked Nehemiah

  793. what he

  794. wants,

  795. what did

  796. Nehemiah

  797. do in

  798. that moment?

  799. He

  800. prayed.

  801. He'd been

  802. doing it for

  803. months, but

  804. in that

  805. moment, he

  806. says, then I

  807. prayed to the

  808. God of

  809. heaven.

  810. And when

  811. the king

  812. grants him

  813. his request

  814. at the end

  815. of chapter 2

  816. verse 8,

  817. we see his

  818. faith and

  819. confidence within

  820. God.

  821. He says,

  822. because the

  823. gracious hand

  824. of God

  825. was upon

  826. me, the

  827. king granted

  828. my requests.

  829. And when

  830. he finally

  831. tells the

  832. leaders in

  833. Jerusalem,

  834. after a

  835. little trip

  836. around the

  837. wall in

  838. verse 18

  839. of chapter 2,

  840. that it was

  841. time to

  842. rebuild these

  843. walls, he

  844. reveals that

  845. his first

  846. confidence is

  847. in God and

  848. not the

  849. official letter

  850. which is in

  851. his pocket

  852. from the

  853. most powerful

  854. man in

  855. the world.

  856. He had

  857. the same

  858. letter in

  859. his pocket

  860. when the

  861. three stooges,

  862. Sambalat,

  863. Tobiah and

  864. Jeshim, mocked

  865. them and

  866. accused them of

  867. rebelling a

  868. king against

  869. King Artaxerxes.

  870. All he

  871. needed to do

  872. was whip out

  873. the letter and

  874. say, hang on

  875. a bit, his

  876. name's at the

  877. bottom of this

  878. letter saying

  879. we're on his

  880. business.

  881. But in

  882. chapter 2

  883. verse 20, he

  884. says the God

  885. of heaven will

  886. give us

  887. success.

  888. His confidence

  889. is that when

  890. God says he

  891. will do

  892. something as

  893. he did in

  894. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  895. chapter 30,

  896. then he will

  897. never abandon

  898. his promises.

  899. God is

  900. faithful to

  901. his covenant

  902. commitment to

  903. love his

  904. people.

  905. I can see

  906. that Nehemiah

  907. was a man of

  908. faith in the

  909. promises of

  910. God.

  911. I cannot see

  912. anywhere in

  913. this book

  914. where he got a

  915. specific word

  916. from God

  917. to get up

  918. and to go

  919. and rebuild

  920. those walls

  921. in Jerusalem.

  922. He was

  923. simply,

  924. faithfully

  925. acting on

  926. what God

  927. had promised

  928. in his

  929. word

  930. centuries

  931. before.

  932. And that

  933. is how the

  934. walls of

  935. Jerusalem got

  936. built.

  937. And that

  938. is how God

  939. builds his

  940. people.

  941. By acting

  942. upon the

  943. promises of

  944. God.

  945. in his

  946. word.

  947. 2 Corinthians

  948. 1 says

  949. that no

  950. matter how

  951. many promises

  952. of God

  953. there are,

  954. they are

  955. all yes

  956. in the

  957. Lord Jesus.

  958. They're all

  959. fulfilled and

  960. completed in

  961. the Lord

  962. Jesus.

  963. In Jesus,

  964. we are

  965. under a

  966. new covenant

  967. and God's

  968. purposes no

  969. longer center

  970. around the

  971. physical city

  972. of Jerusalem

  973. and the

  974. nation of

  975. Israel.

  976. to get

  977. to the

  978. presence of

  979. God,

  980. we don't

  981. need to

  982. make a

  983. pilgrimage

  984. to a

  985. temple in

  986. Jerusalem

  987. somewhere.

  988. In fact,

  989. Jesus said

  990. of that

  991. temple in

  992. Jerusalem,

  993. tear it

  994. down and

  995. in three

  996. days I'm

  997. going to

  998. rebuild it.

  999. Through

  1000. his death

  1001. and resurrection,

  1002. we now have

  1003. direct access

  1004. to God

  1005. through the

  1006. Lord Jesus

  1007. by the

  1008. Spirit.

  1009. He promises

  1010. us the

  1011. right standing

  1012. before God

  1013. and the

  1014. intimacy

  1015. before God

  1016. that Nehemiah

  1017. actually longed

  1018. for here.

  1019. Hear the

  1020. promise of

  1021. God in the

  1022. Bible from

  1023. 1 John

  1024. 1 9.

  1025. And when

  1026. Jesus says

  1027. it, when

  1028. the Bible

  1029. says it,

  1030. when God

  1031. says it,

  1032. it's true

  1033. and he'll

  1034. fulfill it.

  1035. And he

  1036. says if we

  1037. confess our

  1038. sins, he,

  1039. Jesus, is

  1040. faithful and

  1041. just and he

  1042. will forgive us

  1043. our sins and

  1044. purify us

  1045. from all

  1046. unrighteousness.

  1047. That's a

  1048. promise.

  1049. What Nehemiah

  1050. longed for,

  1051. we get in

  1052. Jesus.

  1053. He promises

  1054. to forgive us

  1055. and make us

  1056. right before

  1057. God.

  1058. And what's

  1059. more, Jesus

  1060. doesn't promise

  1061. those who

  1062. confess their

  1063. sin and

  1064. trust him a

  1065. land carved

  1066. out in

  1067. Palestine

  1068. somewhere.

  1069. Jesus

  1070. promises us

  1071. a new and

  1072. perfect and

  1073. eternal heavenly

  1074. home where

  1075. there will be

  1076. no need for

  1077. walls and

  1078. gates because

  1079. there will

  1080. never be a

  1081. threat that

  1082. can challenge

  1083. what he is

  1084. eternally built

  1085. for his

  1086. people.

  1087. And until

  1088. that great and

  1089. final day

  1090. when we see

  1091. him face

  1092. to face,

  1093. God promises

  1094. to give his

  1095. people a

  1096. foretaste of

  1097. our great

  1098. future in

  1099. the Lord

  1100. Jesus that

  1101. he has built

  1102. for us for

  1103. all of

  1104. eternity by

  1105. building together

  1106. up and out

  1107. his people,

  1108. the church,

  1109. on the person

  1110. of the Lord

  1111. Jesus Christ

  1112. and his

  1113. gospel.

  1114. That is

  1115. Jesus' promise

  1116. to us in

  1117. Matthew 16

  1118. in response

  1119. to Simon

  1120. Peter's

  1121. declaration

  1122. that Jesus

  1123. was the

  1124. Christ,

  1125. the son of

  1126. the living

  1127. God.

  1128. He says,

  1129. blessed are

  1130. you,

  1131. Simon son

  1132. of Jonah,

  1133. for this

  1134. was not

  1135. revealed to

  1136. you by

  1137. man,

  1138. but my

  1139. father in

  1140. heaven,

  1141. and on

  1142. this rock

  1143. I will

  1144. build my

  1145. church,

  1146. and the

  1147. gates of

  1148. Hades

  1149. will not

  1150. overcome

  1151. it.

  1152. Jesus

  1153. promises

  1154. in person

  1155. to build

  1156. his church,

  1157. and it

  1158. will triumph

  1159. over all

  1160. forms of

  1161. evil,

  1162. and death,

  1163. and wickedness,

  1164. and governments,

  1165. and the

  1166. media,

  1167. and everything

  1168. that will

  1169. want to

  1170. prevail against

  1171. the church,

  1172. cannot stop

  1173. the building

  1174. of God's

  1175. people.

  1176. That's the

  1177. promise of

  1178. God.

  1179. He will

  1180. build his

  1181. church as

  1182. the truth

  1183. about him,

  1184. as ridiculed

  1185. and mocked

  1186. it is,

  1187. is declared

  1188. and received

  1189. as people

  1190. respond to

  1191. Jesus in

  1192. repentance

  1193. and faith.

  1194. That's what

  1195. happened to

  1196. me 20

  1197. years ago.

  1198. He promised

  1199. not just to

  1200. leave us on

  1201. our own

  1202. sinful ways

  1203. as well,

  1204. but to

  1205. increasingly

  1206. transform us

  1207. into his

  1208. likeness as

  1209. his spirit

  1210. works through

  1211. his word

  1212. to bring

  1213. about

  1214. obedience.

  1215. obedience.

  1216. So my

  1217. brothers and

  1218. sisters,

  1219. love the

  1220. Lord Jesus

  1221. and love

  1222. his church

  1223. by giving

  1224. yourself to

  1225. the building

  1226. up of his

  1227. people here

  1228. at St.

  1229. Paul's.

  1230. Know this,

  1231. we will

  1232. always be

  1233. flawed and

  1234. imperfect.

  1235. perfect.

  1236. We will

  1237. never meet

  1238. all the

  1239. expectations.

  1240. We will

  1241. always fall

  1242. short of

  1243. expectations.

  1244. I will

  1245. always fall

  1246. short of

  1247. your

  1248. expectations.

  1249. But that

  1250. should drive

  1251. us to the

  1252. Lord Jesus

  1253. in confession

  1254. and to give

  1255. us hope for

  1256. the future

  1257. day when

  1258. he calls

  1259. us to our

  1260. perfect home

  1261. with all

  1262. of his

  1263. church from

  1264. every tribe

  1265. and nation

  1266. and language

  1267. and generation.

  1268. We should

  1269. be looking

  1270. forward to

  1271. that perfect

  1272. day and

  1273. the decisions

  1274. we make

  1275. driving us

  1276. towards that

  1277. perfect day.

  1278. And so

  1279. today,

  1280. I want us

  1281. to vote yes

  1282. to proceeding

  1283. with the

  1284. redevelopment

  1285. of our

  1286. facilities.

  1287. But more

  1288. than anything,

  1289. I want us

  1290. to say yes

  1291. to allow God

  1292. to do a

  1293. radical

  1294. rebuilding

  1295. of our

  1296. individual

  1297. and corporate

  1298. life as

  1299. his people.

  1300. Where

  1301. repentance

  1302. and faith

  1303. become the

  1304. norm.

  1305. May his

  1306. vision for

  1307. his church

  1308. be the

  1309. driving

  1310. influence

  1311. in our

  1312. vision for

  1313. his church

  1314. and our

  1315. love for

  1316. his church.

  1317. Amen.
