  1. In Hebrews chapter 10, believers are warned that it is a fearful thing,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2. or they're warned about deliberately continuing to sin

  3. and going back to their old life after experiencing God's truth.

  4. And the only thing which is really left for us if we do that is to expect God's judgment.

  5. And in very strong language he says,

  6. How much more severely do you think a person deserves to be punished

  7. who has trampled the Son of God underfoot,

  8. who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that made him holy,

  9. and who has insulted the spirit of grace?

  10. And he concludes chapter 10 of Hebrews by saying,

  11. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  12. To deliberately reject the grace of God is to put yourself in a place

  13. where there is nothing else but to expect judgment.

  14. God is no fool.

  15. He knows our hearts.

  16. He knows the deep attitudes that we have towards him and towards his purposes.

  17. We have been shown immense grace in Christ.

  18. He has powerfully overcome our sin.

  19. He has graciously brought us to faith.

  20. He has saved us.

  21. And God has done all that is required to make us safe from his judgment.

  22. So one of the messages of the Bible is very clear.

  23. If you reject salvation in Christ, you must expect his judgment.

  24. And in the words of Hebrews,

  25. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  26. When you come to Numbers chapter 11, you read about trouble for the first time.

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  27. And God is very angry.

  28. The first 10 chapters flow really smoothly.

  29. Israel's life is built around God.

  30. His presence is in their midst physically, in the center of their camp.

  31. God is with them.

  32. Life revolves around the Lord.

  33. It revolves around his purposes.

  34. The nation moved when the pillar of cloud moved.

  35. The nation camped when the pillar of cloud stopped.

  36. Their desert journey was a journey which was led by God.

  37. And last week, if you were here, you would have seen that his presence was with them.

  38. He led them.

  39. He protected them.

  40. The Israelites were actually set free from having to run their own lives and figure out their careers.

  41. Their lives, present and future, were caught up in the life of God and of his people.

  42. Life was very straightforward.

  43. But in Numbers 11, the problems begin.

  44. And the people of God begin to learn that it is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  45. And there's three complaints.

  46. And two of these complaints come from the people and one of the complaints comes from Moses himself.

  47. So verses 1 and 2, if you're following with me, Numbers 11, where Leslie's just read to us from.

  48. The people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord.

  49. And when he heard them, his anger was aroused.

  50. And then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

  51. And when the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down.

  52. So they're having a whinge.

  53. They've just gone the first three days of their 40-year journey.

  54. And they're already complaining about it.

  55. We're not told the details.

  56. We know that they haven't got homes.

  57. They're living in tents.

  58. They have to walk a lot.

  59. They eat the same food all the time.

  60. It's almost like, you know, you take the kids on holidays to Queensland.

  61. And they're already asking, how much longer?

  62. Is there anything else to eat?

  63. Haven't you got something else except tiny teddies?

  64. I don't like tiny teddies.

  65. And it's all happened before you've crossed the Hawkesbury River.

  66. Very human.

  67. It happens with adults as well.

  68. I've been in small groups.

  69. Not in this church, of course.

  70. People top one another with stories of difficulty.

  71. So the first dad in his small group, being Father's Day, because we couldn't pick on mums,

  72. you wouldn't believe what last night was like.

  73. Up for two hours with a crying baby.

  74. Second dad, he tops that.

  75. Three hours and a couple of changes of wet bedding and then off to work with the insufferable boss.

  76. So we're really good at whinging and complaining and it gets us going and we relate to one another through it.

  77. But the problem is in verse 1, it says,

  78. The Lord heard and his anger was aroused.

  79. And do you know why?

  80. Because in the end, they are complaining about the circumstances that he is leading them through.

  81. And their perspectives skewed and as they enjoy their little grumble, God gets very angry.

  82. And in three days, they've had 400 years of suffering erased from their memory as though it never happened.

  83. And discontent and dissatisfaction reign supreme.

  84. And God's judgment flares.

  85. Fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

  86. And again, not a lot of detail,

  87. But fire on the outskirts of a tense city with a million people is a threat to the whole camp.

  88. They thought their problems were bad.

  89. They now know that God's judgment is even worse.

  90. And there's a really interesting response to God's judgment.

  91. Verse 2,

  92. People speak to Moses.

  93. Moses speaks to the Lord.

  94. The judgment passes.

  95. And you see this pattern.

  96. The pattern is the people complain.

  97. They sinned.

  98. God judged.

  99. Moses intercedes.

  100. God saves.

  101. God saves.

  102. And so the people are saved from God's judgment by the intercessor that God appoints.

  103. And you see something similar throughout the Bible,

  104. But especially perhaps in the book of Judges.

  105. The people forget God.

  106. They sin.

  107. God sends an enemy who oppresses them for a time.

  108. And when the people have suffered enough,

  109. God sends a judge to rescue them and to make them safe.

  110. When believers sin,

  111. When people like us sin,

  112. Sometimes we have to experience a level of pain before we humble ourselves

  113. And ask for our Heavenly Father's mercy.

  114. We try to tough it out.

  115. We persevere in disobedience before yielding to the Lord

  116. And doing what he invites us to do,

  117. Like if we confess our sins.

  118. God is faithful.

  119. And God is just.

  120. And he will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  121. Or Hebrews chapter 8,

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  122. Which reminds us that we do have such a high priest

  123. Who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.

  124. The one that we pray to.

  125. The one who intercedes for our sins in heaven.

  126. Is Jesus himself.

  127. And so I think when you look at this first grumble and how God deals with it,

  128. It's more like parental discipline.

  129. He's a father.

  130. He brings punishment which doesn't harm their persons.

  131. But it does frighten them back to repentance and faith.

  132. The second complaint is much more serious and it's about food.

  133. If you can believe it.

  134. If only we had meat to eat.

  135. Verse 5.

  136. We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt.

  137. No cost.

  138. And also the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, the garlic.

  139. Now we've lost our appetite and we never see anything but this manna.

  140. They've been watching MasterChef on the Arabian Peninsula.

  141. We're sick of this manna.

  142. We want meat.

  143. We want meat.

  144. And it's a grumble against God's miraculous provision of manna.

  145. And worse, this is the worst part.

  146. They remember Egypt.

  147. Their hearts are turned to Egypt and not to God.

  148. They're focused on what they haven't got rather than grateful for what they do have.

  149. And it's a really skewed remembrance.

  150. We had great food and it didn't cost us anything, they say.

  151. It's almost like, you know, you're in the middle of an election campaign

  152. where a whole lot of facts are suddenly erased from collective memory.

  153. They were slaves for 400 years.

  154. They were terribly oppressed.

  155. They were crying out for deliverance.

  156. And verse 10.

  157. Just awful.

  158. This grumble has spread.

  159. Every family is wailing.

  160. And God this time, not just is his anger aroused, he is hot with anger.

  161. And Moses is troubled.

  162. He's discouraged.

  163. He's leading a nation where everybody's attention's on their stomach

  164. and what they're not getting for dinner.

  165. They are totally discontent.

  166. And Moses is standing there and he's feeling the pressure as though this problem is his to fix and it's not.

  167. And God fixes it with this ironic judgment.

  168. You want meat?

  169. I'll give you meat.

  170. Verse 19.

  171. You will eat it not just for one day or two days or five or ten or twenty,

  172. but for a whole month until it comes out your nostrils and you loathe it

  173. because you have rejected the Lord who is among you

  174. and have wailed before him saying,

  175. Why did we ever leave Egypt?

  176. They're hankering back into their old life with all its agonies and distortions.

  177. We do that.

  178. God brings us to new life in Christ and we look back and we see the fun that everybody else seems to be having

  179. and we make a grab for it.

  180. I remember the drug addict on the northern beaches wonderfully converted to Christ

  181. and came into our church and into our small group.

  182. And he had a background in using women

  183. and it was quite thrilling to see the changes God was working in his life

  184. until he began using women again in our church.

  185. He loved Egypt too much and he turned his back on the grace and mercy

  186. that he had come to know in Christ.

  187. And as far as I know, he has never come back.

  188. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  189. You jump to verse 32.

  190. All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail.

  191. No one gathered less than ten homers.

  192. That's donkey loads.

  193. And they spread them out all around the camp.

  194. But while the meat was still between their teeth

  195. and before it could be consumed,

  196. the anger of the Lord burned against the people

  197. and he struck them with a severe plague.

  198. And therefore the place was named Kibroth Hatava.

  199. Leslie did that much better than me.

  200. Because they buried the people who had craved other food.

  201. This time people die for their sin.

  202. They reject the Lord

  203. and they experience his judgment.

  204. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  205. Third complaint from Moses.

  206. And most of the passage is about God's response to it.

  207. Verse 11, he asks the Lord,

  208. Why have you brought this trouble on your servant?

  209. What have I done to displease you

  210. that you put the burden of all these people on me?

  211. Did I conceive all these people?

  212. Did I give them birth?

  213. Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms

  214. as a nurse carries an infant

  215. to the land that you promised on oath to our forefathers?

  216. Where can I get meat for all these people?

  217. They keep wailing to me,

  218. Give us meat to eat.

  219. I can't carry all these people by myself.

  220. The burden is too heavy for me.

  221. If this is how you're going to treat me,

  222. put me to death right now.

  223. If I have found favour in your eyes,

  224. do not let me face my own ruin.

  225. Let me die.

  226. It's pathetic.

  227. I'm not saying I would have done any better,

  228. but it's pathetic.

  229. He has a sort of a meltdown or even burnout.

  230. Verse 11,

  231. he is right to say that God has brought the trouble on him.

  232. God has called him,

  233. he's appointed him to lead,

  234. and leadership does mean bearing the sinful responses

  235. of people who think they know better.

  236. And you get a huge insight

  237. into what it's like to be in Moses' shoes

  238. when he says,

  239. in verse 11,

  240. what have I done to displease you

  241. that you put the burden of these people on me?

  242. He's very quick to presume

  243. that his difficulties are some sort of divine chastisement

  244. or punishment,

  245. like his heavenly father is dishing out on him

  246. in some way.

  247. It's like in John 9,

  248. when the Pharisees asked Jesus

  249. about the man who had been born blind

  250. and their presumption,

  251. you know,

  252. who sinned?

  253. This man or his parents

  254. that he was born blind?

  255. And in John 9,

  256. Jesus shows

  257. that it's a completely wrong assumption.

  258. It's got nothing to do

  259. with their weakness or sin.

  260. His blindness

  261. is part of the purpose of God

  262. that he will be glorified.

  263. It is always a very cruel thing

  264. and a wrong thing

  265. to be quick

  266. to link poverty

  267. or sickness

  268. or difficulties

  269. in families

  270. to sin.

  271. You see,

  272. it's in how we respond

  273. to difficulty

  274. that we can glorify Christ.

  275. Glad we've got the Fitzroys with us this morning

  276. because the Fitzroys family

  277. has been

  278. on an exceedingly difficult journey

  279. the last few months.

  280. And watching them respond

  281. in faith

  282. in very testing circumstances

  283. is an enormous encouragement

  284. to see their God-given joy

  285. even as they grapple

  286. with difficulty

  287. that is immense

  288. as they journey in faith.

  289. We saw last week

  290. that God is in the midst

  291. of his people.

  292. God is with his people.

  293. It's why we can be confident

  294. with Romans 8

  295. that in every circumstance

  296. God is working

  297. his purposes out

  298. for good

  299. in the lives

  300. of his people.

  301. Moses feels like

  302. it is all too hard.

  303. The whole nation

  304. is bleeding.

  305. He's feeling the pressure.

  306. The pressure

  307. is almost unbearable

  308. unbearable

  309. and the future

  310. seems

  311. very dim.

  312. I ran ahead of God

  313. on Thursday.

  314. I was in a low hole

  315. wondering

  316. why I had ever said yes

  317. to the trip

  318. to South Africa

  319. in five weeks time

  320. with all the problems

  321. that have arisen.

  322. And last week

  323. God encouraged me

  324. with perfect timing

  325. and I was on top

  326. of the world

  327. feeling like

  328. he's in control.

  329. and this week

  330. it was quiet

  331. and I didn't hear

  332. anything

  333. and I went low

  334. and I began

  335. to pray

  336. for God's timing

  337. and God's working

  338. things out

  339. and I rang

  340. Darian in South

  341. Africa

  342. and I said

  343. I'm feeling low

  344. what's happening

  345. and he was

  346. a great comfort

  347. and he told me

  348. lots of good things

  349. that are happening

  350. in the background.

  351. But I was

  352. disappointed in myself.

  353. I wished

  354. I had waited

  355. patiently

  356. a little longer.

  357. I put it

  358. in God's hands

  359. in the morning

  360. and I was taking it

  361. back into my own hands

  362. in the afternoon.

  363. There is joy

  364. in faith.

  365. There is great joy

  366. and peace

  367. to be found

  368. in trusting God

  369. and being patient

  370. in difficulty.

  371. It is hugely

  372. reassuring

  373. to later see

  374. that God

  375. is in control.

  376. Moses is wrong

  377. to think

  378. that God

  379. is punishing him

  380. and you see

  381. that by the way

  382. that God

  383. treats him

  384. over the other

  385. part

  386. of this complaint.

  387. It's a two-fold

  388. complaint.

  389. What have I done?

  390. Verse 11.

  391. What have I done

  392. to displease you

  393. that you have

  394. put the burden

  395. of all these

  396. people on me?

  397. Second part.

  398. You have put

  399. the burden

  400. of all these

  401. people on me.

  402. Did I conceive

  403. them?

  404. Where can I

  405. get meat?

  406. I can't carry

  407. this burden

  408. by myself.

  409. Again,

  410. it's echoes

  411. of the New Testament.

  412. Jesus feeding

  413. the 5,000.

  414. He turned

  415. to his disciples.

  416. 5,000 people

  417. out there

  418. and not a

  419. McDonald's

  420. in sight

  421. and he turns

  422. to his disciples

  423. and said,

  424. you guys

  425. give them

  426. something to eat.

  427. And their

  428. response is

  429. incredulous.

  430. Where can we

  431. get food

  432. for all these

  433. people?

  434. They express

  435. their own

  436. limitation.

  437. They can't

  438. do it

  439. and Moses

  440. can't do it

  441. either

  442. and God

  443. knows that

  444. he can't

  445. do it.

  446. But Moses

  447. can't imagine

  448. how God

  449. could do

  450. such a

  451. thing.

  452. Here I

  453. am,

  454. I'm among

  455. 600,000

  456. men on

  457. foot and

  458. you say

  459. I will

  460. give them

  461. meat to

  462. eat for

  463. a whole

  464. month.

  465. Verse 22,

  466. would they

  467. have enough

  468. if flocks

  469. and herds

  470. were slaughtered

  471. for them?

  472. Would they

  473. have enough

  474. if all

  475. the fish

  476. in the

  477. sea were

  478. caught

  479. for them?

  480. And

  481. verse 23,

  482. the Lord

  483. answered

  484. Moses,

  485. is the

  486. Lord's

  487. arm

  488. too

  489. short?

  490. You

  491. will see

  492. now

  493. whether or

  494. not

  495. what I

  496. say

  497. will

  498. come

  499. true

  500. for

  501. you.

  502. This

  503. is a

  504. great

  505. statement

  506. question.

  507. Is the

  508. Lord's

  509. arm

  510. too

  511. short?

  512. Ever

  513. felt like

  514. you're

  515. standing

  516. in an

  517. impossible

  518. situation

  519. with no

  520. way

  521. out?

  522. Huge

  523. problems

  524. surrounding

  525. you

  526. every way

  527. you look?

  528. thinking

  529. God is

  530. asking you

  531. to do

  532. something

  533. which is

  534. beyond

  535. your

  536. means

  537. or your

  538. capacity

  539. and God

  540. speaks

  541. very gently

  542. to Moses

  543. and says

  544. is the

  545. Lord's

  546. arm

  547. too

  548. short?

  549. See

  550. Moses is

  551. learning about

  552. himself,

  553. what God

  554. expects of

  555. him.

  556. He's not

  557. the saviour,

  558. God is.

  559. There are

  560. limits to

  561. his ability

  562. to lead

  563. God's

  564. people.

  565. Moses

  566. has an

  567. incredibly

  568. important

  569. role.

  570. He speaks

  571. to the

  572. people on

  573. behalf of

  574. God and

  575. he also

  576. speaks to

  577. God on

  578. behalf of

  579. the people

  580. but he

  581. isn't

  582. God.

  583. Only

  584. God can

  585. do what

  586. God will

  587. do and

  588. God makes

  589. provision for

  590. Moses in a

  591. very practical

  592. way.

  593. Verse 16,

  594. the Lord

  595. said to

  596. Moses,

  597. bring me

  598. 70 of

  599. Israel's

  600. leaders who

  601. are known

  602. to you as

  603. leaders and

  604. officials among

  605. the people.

  606. Have them

  607. come to the

  608. tent of

  609. meeting that

  610. they may

  611. stand there

  612. with you

  613. and I

  614. will come

  615. down and

  616. speak with

  617. you there

  618. and I

  619. will take

  620. the spirit

  621. that is on

  622. you and

  623. put the

  624. spirit on

  625. them and

  626. they will

  627. help you to

  628. carry the

  629. burden of

  630. the people so

  631. that you

  632. will not have

  633. to carry it

  634. alone.

  635. And then

  636. in verse 25,

  637. he took of

  638. the spirit

  639. that was on

  640. him and

  641. put the

  642. spirit on

  643. the 70

  644. elders and

  645. when the

  646. spirit rested

  647. on them they

  648. prophesied but

  649. they did not

  650. do it again.

  651. See God

  652. raises up

  653. people to

  654. help him,

  655. men with

  656. God's spirit

  657. chosen by

  658. God.

  659. Huge

  660. parallels to

  661. the early

  662. chapters of

  663. Acts of the

  664. Apostles in

  665. the New

  666. Testament when

  667. Christ was

  668. building his

  669. church.

  670. In Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  671. chapter 2,

  672. the spirit

  673. of God

  674. poured out

  675. on all

  676. believers at

  677. Pentecost and

  678. they prophesied.

  679. They preached

  680. the gospel of

  681. the Lord Jesus

  682. Christ in the

  683. languages of

  684. the nations

  685. who were

  686. present.

  687. In Acts

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  688. chapter 6,

  689. the believers

  690. appointed seven

  691. men from

  692. among you who

  693. are known to

  694. be full of

  695. the spirit

  696. and of

  697. wisdom.

  698. The load

  699. of ministry

  700. leadership was

  701. authenticated by

  702. God.

  703. And it was

  704. expanded and

  705. it was

  706. shared.

  707. God was

  708. very kind to

  709. Moses.

  710. He provided

  711. others to

  712. help him.

  713. So the

  714. work of

  715. ministry is

  716. shared by a

  717. body of

  718. believers united

  719. in submission to

  720. God and

  721. empowered by

  722. God.

  723. It's a

  724. brilliant picture

  725. of what a

  726. well-functioning

  727. growing church

  728. might look

  729. like.

  730. For Moses

  731. and for us

  732. it is quite a

  733. wonderful thing

  734. to fall into

  735. the hands of

  736. the living God.

  737. So Numbers 11

  738. is an amazing

  739. chapter.

  740. There's a lot

  741. more that could

  742. be said and

  743. especially about

  744. the operation of

  745. the spirit in

  746. this chapter and

  747. you can tackle me

  748. at morning tea if

  749. you want to go

  750. there.

  751. But there are

  752. three complaints

  753. and God deals

  754. with them in

  755. three ways.

  756. He's angry with

  757. their grumbling.

  758. He disciplines

  759. them as

  760. children.

  761. He leads them

  762. back in repentance

  763. and faith when

  764. they cry out to

  765. Moses who intercedes

  766. on their behalf.

  767. God is

  768. exceedingly angry

  769. when they turn

  770. their backs on

  771. God's salvation.

  772. They turn their

  773. backs on the one

  774. way of salvation

  775. that God gives

  776. them and they

  777. experience judgment

  778. and death.

  779. And when Moses

  780. complains he is

  781. wrong to think

  782. that God is

  783. punishing him.

  784. And he was also

  785. wrong to think

  786. that the burden

  787. of ministry was

  788. his to bear

  789. alone.

  790. God provided

  791. tenderly for

  792. him.

  793. So friends

  794. there are safe

  795. ways and there

  796. are unsafe ways

  797. to fall into

  798. the hands of

  799. the living God.

  800. Safe ways

  801. see us

  802. disciplined,

  803. corrected,

  804. cared for

  805. as children

  806. by a loving

  807. heavenly father.

  808. Unsafe ways

  809. lead to judgment

  810. and death

  811. at the hands

  812. of the sovereign

  813. king over all

  814. creation.

  815. Life

  816. versus

  817. death.

  818. death.

  819. Jesus

  820. says in

  821. John 3

  822. 36

  823. whoever

  824. believes in

  825. the son

  826. has eternal

  827. life.

  828. But whoever

  829. rejects the

  830. son will not

  831. see life

  832. for God's

  833. wrath remains

  834. on him.

  835. Amen.
