  1. God has a wonderful sense of humour and great ways of humbling his servants.

  2. So here I am preaching about humility.

  3. Let me tell you how the morning began.

  4. Needed to print out my sermon, needed to redo the service sheet

  5. and the photocopier machine that we have, which is a magic machine,

  6. had a major meltdown.

  7. And I come back in to pick up my work off the machine

  8. and two people are standing there, two of you are standing there.

  9. I've apologised to one already, I'll get to the other one,

  10. saying it's all jammed up and it's just not working.

  11. And I said, somebody's physically turned the switch off on the site

  12. because the switch was off on the site.

  13. And they're standing there going, wasn't me, wasn't me.

  14. And I'm thinking, well, somebody's turned it off.

  15. So we go through the cycle again, we turn it on,

  16. we push the instruction on the top,

  17. and as soon as we push the instruction on the top,

  18. the switch on the side of the machine goes, click.

  19. I was wrong.

  20. It's hard to say, isn't it?

  21. Let's pray.

  22. Lord, as we come to your word this morning,

  23. we pray that you would speak to us by your spirit.

  24. We pray that you would be at work in all of us,

  25. transforming us into the likeness of Christ

  26. and wrestling with who we really are

  27. and submitting to you as who you really are.

  28. And we pray this in Jesus' name and for his sake.

  29. Amen.

  30. To recap, we are on a journey.

  31. We had an intermission last week.

  32. We had back to church Sunday

  33. and we've got one or two back with us this morning

  34. and that's fantastic.

  35. But we're on a journey.

  36. Before that, we've been on this journey in the Old Testament,

  37. through the Old Testament book of Numbers.

  38. And we began the series in Numbers chapter 9

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  39. and God leading his people on a journey to the land of promise.

  40. All was well.

  41. God was in their midst.

  42. The whole nation's life was centred on him.

  43. There was joy and purpose for living

  44. which came from having God as the absolute centre of this nation.

  45. And so it was a journey that began a bit like a Ferrari ride

  46. if you've been on the upgraded M2,

  47. the beautiful, smooth surface that it's got at the moment.

  48. It's fast.

  49. It's smooth.

  50. It's powerful.

  51. There's not a bump in the road.

  52. And then you get to Numbers chapter 11

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  53. where we were last time

  54. and it is as if the Ferrari has turned off the highway

  55. onto a rocky bush track

  56. and the grumbles begin.

  57. The people complain about their difficult life.

  58. They quickly forget how hard it was before.

  59. They complain about the menu.

  60. They like economy class passengers on a flight to the United States.

  61. They're grizzling about the legroom, the service and the food.

  62. And Moses comes out one morning

  63. and people are just sobbing all over the place.

  64. It says in Numbers 11,

  65. they're standing, the whole families are standing

  66. at the entrances of their tents,

  67. just sobbing.

  68. And Moses is so overwhelmed by the people's demands,

  69. he melts down

  70. and he makes this pitiful complaint to God,

  71. finishing with,

  72. if this is how you are going to treat me,

  73. do me a favour and put me to death right now.

  74. Don't try it.

  75. They are not in a good place.

  76. Short story is God judges the people.

  77. But the amazing thing is that God answers Moses

  78. with a word which is to awaken faith.

  79. Is the Lord's arm too short?

  80. You will now see whether or not

  81. what I say will come true for you.

  82. And we read on and you see that God does the impossible.

  83. He feeds the people.

  84. He judges them.

  85. But he tenderly provides for Moses.

  86. And he raises up 70 spirit-filled leaders

  87. to assist him in the task of leading the nation.

  88. So God hears his complaint

  89. and provides for him in a very generous and personal way.

  90. And that leads us into Numbers chapter 12

    Numbers 12 chapter mention

  91. where we are today.

  92. So for Moses,

  93. leadership clearly isn't easy.

  94. The complaints continue

  95. but now they come from a different direction.

  96. This time they come from his right-hand man

  97. and his right-hand woman,

  98. both on the same side.

  99. Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses

  100. because of his Cushite wife

  101. for he had married a Cushite.

  102. Has the Lord only spoken through Moses?

  103. Hasn't he also spoken through us?

  104. And the Lord heard this.

  105. So Miriam and Aaron are Moses' older brother and sister.

  106. They've both had very significant and prophetic roles

  107. in leading the people of Israel.

  108. Aaron was the high priest for the nation.

  109. He was also Moses' public address system.

  110. So when Moses spoke to the people,

  111. it was Aaron who did the talking.

  112. Miriam was probably the protective big sister

  113. who watched over her baby brother

  114. when their mum floated him in the Nile River.

  115. She was the woman in Exodus 15

  116. who led the women of Israel

  117. singing and praising God

  118. when he saved them from the Egyptian army.

  119. Now she joyously grabbed the tambourine.

  120. She bounced all over the place.

  121. They danced and sang.

  122. She said,

  123. Sing to the Lord for he's highly exalted.

  124. The horse and its rider

  125. he has hurled into the sea.

  126. And so Moses and Aaron and Miriam

  127. were the leading people of the nation

  128. until the Lord appointed 70 spirit-filled leaders

  129. to assist Moses.

  130. The leadership team's just been expanded

  131. in a really big way

  132. and not everyone's happy.

  133. Sort of like a family owned and run business

  134. merging with a corporation

  135. with a whole lot of people

  136. who are at a similar level of leadership.

  137. And there are many relationships to be juggled

  138. as people find their place

  139. in this new organisation.

  140. Job security,

  141. potential loss of significance

  142. are big drivers

  143. for many of us.

  144. And so what happens?

  145. Well, two of the original three

  146. gang up on little brother.

  147. So verse 1,

  148. Miriam and Aaron

  149. began to talk against Moses

  150. because of his Cushite wife.

  151. For he'd married a Cushite.

  152. Has the Lord only spoken through him?

  153. And Moses gets what you call triangled.

  154. It's the sort of thing

  155. that people do all the time.

  156. Your kids are having a fight.

  157. Two of your kids are having a fight.

  158. Well, your grandkids,

  159. they're having a fight

  160. and you step in

  161. and think you'll try and fix things.

  162. And all of a sudden,

  163. what do they do?

  164. They unite,

  165. they form an alliance against you

  166. and you get sucked into the conflict

  167. and they're firmly placed on the other side.

  168. See, Miriam and Aaron

  169. speak against Moses

  170. and the basis for their accusation

  171. is his foreign wife.

  172. Exodus tells us her name is Zephora.

  173. She's a Moabites

  174. who might have come from a place called Cushan.

  175. She may have had a different skin colour.

  176. She's descended from Abraham.

  177. But not from Israel.

  178. She hadn't been through the plagues in Egypt

  179. or the journey through the bottom of the sea.

  180. She had remained with her dad

  181. while Moses went

  182. and confronted the king of Egypt.

  183. So we're not really sure

  184. what their problem with her was.

  185. You know,

  186. were they critical of her race?

  187. Or that she hadn't been through the salvation

  188. and the hard times

  189. that they had been through?

  190. Or that she had Moses' ear

  191. in a way that they don't?

  192. But whatever it is,

  193. it becomes the issue

  194. that Miriam and Aaron

  195. work themselves up into a lather over

  196. to the point

  197. that they assert themselves against Moses.

  198. has the Lord only spoken through him?

  199. And it's almost like,

  200. well, what makes him so special?

  201. Very Aussie.

  202. They cut down the tall poppy

  203. and they effectively say,

  204. he's no better than us.

  205. We've prophesied.

  206. And they are right

  207. because the Lord has spoken

  208. through both of them.

  209. But they are wrong

  210. because God has made Moses special

  211. and God has called Moses to his role.

  212. It's not a very easy thing

  213. to be a leader

  214. when other people think

  215. they can do a better job than you.

  216. I've been there.

  217. And it's easy to think

  218. that you are the better preacher

  219. or that you have

  220. the intellectual high ground

  221. or that you have

  222. a much better idea

  223. of what is strategic

  224. and what our leaders

  225. should be doing.

  226. Most of us have spent

  227. the last few weeks

  228. being the wise ones

  229. and articulating

  230. what our prime minister

  231. and government

  232. should be concerned about.

  233. We know how to do that job,

  234. don't we?

  235. And it's very easy

  236. when we challenge leadership

  237. to be in the same time

  238. what we're actually doing

  239. is we're exalting ourselves.

  240. And so Miriam and Aaron

  241. lift themselves to Moses' level.

  242. They don't try to go over his level,

  243. they just try to come up to his level.

  244. And they say,

  245. has the Lord only spoken through Moses?

  246. Hasn't he also spoken through us?

  247. But they're not innocent questions

  248. because the challenge is on.

  249. And there is a very foreboding

  250. and the Lord heard this.

  251. Verse 2.

  252. And God steps in

  253. and he stands by his man.

  254. So verse 4,

  255. at once the Lord said to Moses

  256. and to Aaron and to Miriam,

  257. come out to the tent of meeting,

  258. all three of you,

  259. get out here.

  260. So the three of them came out

  261. and then the Lord came down

  262. in a pillar of cloud

  263. and he stood at the entrance to the tent

  264. and he summoned Aaron and Miriam.

  265. And when both of them stepped forward,

  266. he said,

  267. listen to my words.

  268. When a prophet of the Lord is among you,

  269. I reveal myself to him in visions.

  270. I speak to him in dreams.

  271. But this is not true of my servant Moses.

  272. He is faithful in all my house.

  273. With him I speak face to face,

  274. clearly and not in riddles.

  275. He sees the form of the Lord.

  276. Why then were you not afraid

  277. to speak against my servant Moses?

  278. And verse 9,

  279. the anger of the Lord burned against them

  280. and he left them.

  281. They get a divine dressing down.

  282. My tent now, all of you.

  283. He presents himself in power.

  284. The pillar of cloud descends.

  285. He calls Aaron and Miriam

  286. and says,

  287. step forward.

  288. They are prophets

  289. and so are the 70 helpers.

  290. They declare the work and the words,

  291. the work and the,

  292. the word and the works of God.

  293. If my spirit,

  294. if my sermon is spirit empowered this morning,

  295. it is a prophetic word

  296. in as much as it is a forth telling

  297. of the word of God

  298. in a way that engages our hearts

  299. and is driven by the spirit of God.

  300. And I always pray that God would speak

  301. through his proclaimed word,

  302. whether it's a word we speak in public

  303. or a word that we speak in private.

  304. And so any power is not mine,

  305. it's God's power.

  306. So the Lord doesn't mince words

  307. telling Miriam and Moses

  308. that when he is among them in prophecy,

  309. it is him communicating his words

  310. in dreams and visions.

  311. It's not them and their abilities,

  312. it's his power which is driving them.

  313. And then he says,

  314. but Moses is different.

  315. He is my personal house servant.

  316. He is faithful to me.

  317. I speak with Moses man to man

  318. and face to face

  319. and he sees my form.

  320. I've got relationship with him

  321. that I haven't got with you

  322. in the same way.

  323. Moses doesn't have to make a name for himself.

  324. God gives him a wonderful rap.

  325. It's the Old Testament equivalent

  326. of a New Testament well done

  327. good and faithful servant.

  328. And so the question is,

  329. and it's God's question,

  330. why then were you not afraid

  331. to speak against my servant Moses?

  332. And this is not a question,

  333. this is an accusation from God.

  334. And we're told in verse 9,

  335. the anger of the Lord

  336. burned against them

  337. and he left them.

  338. And he didn't just make an accusation,

  339. he left Miriam

  340. with leprosy like snow

  341. and probably with something

  342. like a white flaky skin disease

  343. all over her body,

  344. which would have been enough

  345. to immediately make her unclean

  346. and unable to come

  347. amongst the people of God.

  348. But it was probably

  349. a threat to her life

  350. because Aaron just immediately

  351. pleads with Moses,

  352. please my Lord,

  353. do not hold this,

  354. hold against us the sin

  355. that we have so foolishly committed.

  356. Do not let her be

  357. like a stillborn infant

  358. coming from its mother's womb

  359. and with its flesh

  360. half eaten away.

  361. It's quite a wonderful prayer.

  362. There's no ifs and buts.

  363. There's no excuses.

  364. There's no blame shifting.

  365. There's corporate ownership.

  366. We, not she.

  367. This is a sin

  368. which we have foolishly committed.

  369. Please don't let her rot away.

  370. Amen.

  371. Amen.

  372. Amen.

  373. It's liberating

  374. to confess our sins

  375. in God's presence.

  376. To not have to hide

  377. from what we are really like.

  378. To be set free

  379. from games of pretense.

  380. Have you ever done it?

  381. I have.

  382. And it is absolutely freeing.

  383. And I don't just mean

  384. private confession to God

  385. we're on our knees at home

  386. telling him what we've done.

  387. But I mean going to the person

  388. that you have offended against.

  389. And owning your own offence

  390. against them.

  391. I am sorry

  392. I did gossip about you

  393. when I said that.

  394. We read it all the time

  395. from 1 John chapter 1

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  396. don't we?

  397. If we confess our sins.

  398. God is faithful

  399. and just

  400. to forgive us our sins

  401. and to cleanse us

  402. from all unrighteousness.

  403. Aaron owns his sins

  404. straight away.

  405. It's not cheap forgiveness.

  406. They do come clean.

  407. They beg for mercy

  408. from Moses.

  409. And Moses

  410. with great grace

  411. and probably great love

  412. for his sister

  413. cries to the Lord

  414. Oh God

  415. Oh God

  416. please help her.

  417. That could have been

  418. a moment of power

  419. for him couldn't it?

  420. What can I milk

  421. out of this moment?

  422. Oh God

  423. please help her.

  424. Failure in confession

  425. is a very humbling thing.

  426. It's good for our souls.

  427. It's good for our relationships

  428. with each other.

  429. It's good for our relationship

  430. with God.

  431. And God responds

  432. to Moses' intercession.

  433. It seems like Miriam

  434. probably was healed

  435. straight away.

  436. It's not specific.

  437. And then she was left

  438. outside the camp

  439. for seven days

  440. while the whole nation

  441. waited on her.

  442. A million people

  443. waited for her

  444. to go past

  445. her period of cleansing.

  446. She had done

  447. a disgraceful thing

  448. but she was

  449. completely forgiven.

  450. And you get

  451. this picture

  452. that God

  453. the way that God

  454. treats her

  455. is a picture

  456. that says

  457. sin matters

  458. but it's also

  459. a picture

  460. that says

  461. that the grace

  462. of God

  463. is very large

  464. indeed.

  465. there's something

  466. else in this event

  467. that is worth

  468. noting.

  469. If you read

  470. through that passage

  471. you will see

  472. that Moses

  473. does not speak

  474. a word

  475. except to say

  476. oh God

  477. please help her.

  478. He says

  479. nothing to defend

  480. himself.

  481. He speaks

  482. no word of

  483. rebuke

  484. to Miriam

  485. and Aaron.

  486. Verse 3

  487. tells us

  488. something

  489. which is

  490. enormously

  491. significant

  492. Moses was

  493. a very

  494. humble man

  495. more humble

  496. than anybody

  497. who had

  498. ever lived.

  499. You think

  500. well what does

  501. that mean?

  502. What does

  503. that look like?

  504. Because

  505. Moses was a

  506. man who had

  507. been used

  508. by God

  509. in many

  510. extraordinary

  511. moments.

  512. He had

  513. stared down

  514. the king

  515. of Egypt

  516. while God

  517. inflicted

  518. his plagues.

  519. he had

  520. raised

  521. his staff

  522. over the

  523. waters

  524. of the

  525. Red Sea

  526. and the

  527. sea had

  528. parted

  529. when God

  530. parted

  531. the waters

  532. and more

  533. than a

  534. million

  535. people

  536. passed

  537. through

  538. on dry

  539. ground.

  540. He had

  541. had the

  542. experience

  543. of relating

  544. to God

  545. man to

  546. man

  547. face to

  548. face.

  549. He had

  550. had unique

  551. experiences

  552. of God

  553. and his

  554. power.

  555. He had

  556. had the

  557. adrenaline

  558. rush of

  559. seeing God

  560. do

  561. extraordinary

  562. things

  563. and yet

  564. it says

  565. he was a

  566. humble man

  567. more humble

  568. than anybody

  569. who had

  570. ever lived.

  571. The Hebrew

  572. word which

  573. is translated

  574. humility

  575. is used

  576. in other

  577. parts of

  578. the Old

  579. Testament

  580. to mean

  581. things like

  582. poor.

  583. And

  584. needy

  585. and socially

  586. weak and

  587. afflicted and

  588. humiliated.

  589. And you

  590. can look at

  591. Moses from

  592. another direction

  593. and say

  594. well Moses

  595. is afflicted

  596. and he's

  597. humiliated by

  598. his own

  599. people.

  600. He is

  601. burdened and

  602. he is

  603. bowed down.

  604. And in

  605. his great

  606. moments of

  607. power and

  608. in his

  609. personal

  610. moments of

  611. affliction

  612. he is a

  613. man whose

  614. personal

  615. ego is

  616. submitted to

  617. God's

  618. will.

  619. Whether

  620. it's a

  621. high high

  622. or a

  623. low low.

  624. So he

  625. can walk

  626. in glory,

  627. he can walk

  628. in humiliation

  629. and he

  630. is humble.

  631. He lives

  632. in close

  633. personal

  634. relationship

  635. with God

  636. but with

  637. his ego

  638. in submission

  639. to the

  640. Lord.

  641. humility.

  642. I think

  643. humility is

  644. what lies

  645. behind the

  646. apostle Paul

  647. saying in

  648. Philippians 4

  649. 12,

  650. I know

  651. what it is

  652. to be in

  653. need and

  654. I know

  655. what it is

  656. to have

  657. plenty.

  658. I have

  659. learned the

  660. secret of

  661. being content

  662. in any

  663. and every

  664. situation.

  665. I think

  666. this is a

  667. lesson for

  668. me, I'm

  669. still growing

  670. in my

  671. understanding

  672. of this

  673. but when

  674. we think

  675. humility

  676. we as

  677. Aussies I

  678. think often

  679. think of

  680. somebody who

  681. doesn't have

  682. tickets on

  683. themselves or

  684. who is

  685. self-effacing,

  686. a person who

  687. deflects attention

  688. away from

  689. themselves so

  690. you've done

  691. something that

  692. people acknowledge

  693. and say it's

  694. really great,

  695. oh no, no, no,

  696. it was nothing,

  697. it wasn't me.

  698. But it's not

  699. humility if we

  700. crawl away into

  701. a hole really

  702. wanting the

  703. glory on

  704. ourselves.

  705. A humble

  706. person gives

  707. glory where

  708. glory is due.

  709. So for a

  710. humble person

  711. God's glory

  712. comes before

  713. our own

  714. ego.

  715. If Christ

  716. has gifted

  717. you, maybe

  718. in work which

  719. you do or

  720. ministry, work

  721. that you do in

  722. your workplace or

  723. work that you do

  724. in ministry,

  725. ministry, and

  726. if he has

  727. called you to

  728. humble service

  729. in those things,

  730. then give him

  731. the glory by

  732. using those

  733. gifts in his

  734. service and to

  735. his glory.

  736. Do them well

  737. in his name.

  738. And maybe

  739. Christ has put

  740. you in a

  741. lowly place, a

  742. hard place, a

  743. place of

  744. suffering, a

  745. place maybe

  746. where your

  747. work is not

  748. seen or

  749. acknowledged by

  750. anybody at

  751. all.

  752. home.

  753. I still

  754. think of a

  755. young woman

  756. working in the

  757. kitchen at a

  758. youth camp.

  759. Everybody wants

  760. to do the big

  761. high profile

  762. tasks, you

  763. know, counsellor

  764. to the kids or

  765. speaker at the

  766. youth events and

  767. all those sorts of

  768. things.

  769. And this woman

  770. worked in the

  771. kitchen in a

  772. way that

  773. wasn't just a

  774. job to do, it

  775. was the ministry

  776. that she was

  777. doing in serving

  778. everybody at

  779. the camp.

  780. No personal

  781. acknowledgement by

  782. most, but one

  783. or two did see.

  784. And it says

  785. heaps.

  786. She was

  787. humble.

  788. She served

  789. Christ.

  790. She gave him the

  791. glory in what she

  792. was doing.

  793. See, Miriam and

  794. Aaron let their

  795. pride run away

  796. from them.

  797. Now, they were

  798. anything other

  799. than humble.

  800. they made a

  801. grasp for

  802. recognition and

  803. exalted themselves

  804. when God was

  805. clearly raising up

  806. other leaders

  807. around them.

  808. And they

  809. exalted themselves

  810. over God's

  811. appointed leader,

  812. Moses.

  813. Philippians chapter

  814. two says in

  815. verses three and

  816. four, do

  817. nothing, it

  818. says to us,

  819. do nothing out

  820. of selfish

  821. ambition or

  822. vain conceit,

  823. but in

  824. humility consider

  825. others better

  826. than yourselves.

  827. Each of you

  828. should look not

  829. only to your

  830. own interests,

  831. but also to

  832. the interests

  833. of others.

  834. And I think

  835. one of the

  836. things that

  837. Philippians is

  838. showing us is

  839. that humility's

  840. opposite is

  841. our own selfish

  842. ambition and

  843. vain conceit,

  844. glory taken for

  845. ourselves.

  846. So life becomes

  847. about me and

  848. my issues and I

  849. am always the

  850. first one in

  851. line for the

  852. things I need

  853. help with.

  854. Aaron and

  855. Miriam made a

  856. grasp for their

  857. own position and

  858. place, two

  859. ganged up on

  860. three.

  861. Moses was

  862. different.

  863. He put the

  864. interests of the

  865. nation ahead of

  866. his own numbers

  867. of times.

  868. God even

  869. offered at one

  870. point to wipe

  871. everybody else

  872. out and make

  873. him the head of

  874. a dynasty,

  875. start again with

  876. a brand new

  877. family and he

  878. would be king

  879. pin, top

  880. dog.

  881. God and

  882. Moses said

  883. no because

  884. he was

  885. concerned for

  886. God's name

  887. and God's

  888. glory if

  889. God did

  890. such a

  891. thing.

  892. So humility

  893. is not

  894. selfish.

  895. Humble men

  896. and women

  897. have their

  898. egos submitted

  899. to Christ

  900. and to his

  901. purposes.

  902. When

  903. Numbers was

  904. written,

  905. Moses was

  906. indeed the

  907. most humble

  908. man who

  909. had ever

  910. lived.

  911. But

  912. Philippians

  913. goes on

  914. to use

  915. Christ,

  916. not Moses,

  917. as the

  918. ultimate

  919. humble man.

  920. Your

  921. attitude

  922. should be

  923. the same

  924. as that

  925. of Christ

  926. Jesus,

  927. who being

  928. in very

  929. nature

  930. God,

  931. did not

  932. consider

  933. equality

  934. with God

  935. something

  936. to be

  937. grasped,

  938. but made

  939. himself

  940. nothing,

  941. taking the

  942. very nature

  943. of a

  944. servant,

  945. being made

  946. in human

  947. likeness

  948. and being

  949. found in

  950. appearance

  951. as a

  952. man,

  953. he humbled

  954. himself and

  955. became

  956. obedient to

  957. death,

  958. even death

  959. on a

  960. cross.

  961. Christ

  962. is the

  963. ultimate

  964. example of

  965. humility.

  966. Christ

  967. Jesus,

  968. God

  969. himself,

  970. did not

  971. assert himself

  972. or his

  973. rights.

  974. He did

  975. not make a

  976. shortcut grasp

  977. for power.

  978. God

  979. said,

  980. he could

  981. have

  982. called a

  983. legion

  984. of angels

  985. to save

  986. himself

  987. from the

  988. cross.

  989. He

  990. submitted

  991. himself,

  992. he yielded

  993. his ego

  994. in faith

  995. and trust

  996. to the

  997. will and

  998. purposes

  999. of his

  1000. heavenly

  1001. father.

  1002. My

  1003. father,

  1004. take this

  1005. cup from

  1006. me,

  1007. but not

  1008. my will,

  1009. but yours

  1010. be done.

  1011. Father,

  1012. into your

  1013. hands I

  1014. commit my

  1015. spirit.

  1016. Christ

  1017. knew who

  1018. he was.

  1019. He knew

  1020. who his

  1021. father was.

  1022. He knew

  1023. what the

  1024. mission was.

  1025. He did

  1026. not

  1027. accidentally

  1028. die.

  1029. He became

  1030. obedient to

  1031. death,

  1032. even the

  1033. humiliation

  1034. of death

  1035. on a

  1036. cross at

  1037. the hands

  1038. of the

  1039. people that

  1040. he had

  1041. made.

  1042. Christ

  1043. submitted

  1044. his own

  1045. ego to

  1046. glorious

  1047. purpose that

  1048. his father

  1049. would achieve.

  1050. And that

  1051. is why

  1052. in Philippians

  1053. 2 it

  1054. says that

  1055. God exalted

  1056. him to

  1057. the highest

  1058. place and

  1059. gave him the

  1060. name that

  1061. is above

  1062. every name,

  1063. that at

  1064. the name of

  1065. Jesus every

  1066. knee should

  1067. bow in

  1068. heaven and

  1069. on earth

  1070. and under

  1071. the earth,

  1072. and every

  1073. tongue confess

  1074. that Jesus

  1075. Christ is

  1076. Lord to

  1077. the glory

  1078. of God

  1079. the Father.

  1080. God

  1081. stood by

  1082. his man

  1083. and he

  1084. vindicated

  1085. him.

  1086. God

  1087. stood by

  1088. his man

  1089. Moses

  1090. and he

  1091. vindicated

  1092. him.

  1093. We can

  1094. be absolutely

  1095. confident that

  1096. if we will

  1097. humble ourselves

  1098. and submit

  1099. our egos to

  1100. the glorious

  1101. Lord Jesus

  1102. Christ,

  1103. then he will

  1104. vindicate us.

  1105. A life

  1106. lived for

  1107. him will

  1108. never be

  1109. wasted.

  1110. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1111. chapter 5

  1112. says all

  1113. of you

  1114. clothe

  1115. yourselves

  1116. with humility

  1117. toward one

  1118. another because

  1119. God opposes

  1120. the proud but

  1121. gives grace to

  1122. the humble.

  1123. Humble

  1124. yourselves

  1125. therefore under

  1126. God's mighty

  1127. hand that he

  1128. may lift you

  1129. up in due

  1130. time.

  1131. Cast all

  1132. your anxiety

  1133. on him

  1134. because he

  1135. cares for

  1136. you.

  1137. God

  1138. intervenes to

  1139. protect his

  1140. people.

  1141. Humble

  1142. authenticity

  1143. is rightly

  1144. one of the

  1145. seven core

  1146. values of

  1147. St.

  1148. Paul's.

  1149. Let me

  1150. finish by

  1151. reminding you

  1152. what it

  1153. says.

  1154. As a

  1155. church we

  1156. seek to

  1157. declare war

  1158. on the

  1159. daily

  1160. tendency

  1161. towards

  1162. self-sufficiency

  1163. and the

  1164. desire to

  1165. live

  1166. independently

  1167. of God.

  1168. The

  1169. promise of

  1170. God in

  1171. James 4

  1172. 6 is

  1173. that he

  1174. gives

  1175. grace to

  1176. the

  1177. humble.

  1178. We are

  1179. convinced

  1180. that no

  1181. effective

  1182. growth,

  1183. ministry or

  1184. mission

  1185. happens

  1186. without the

  1187. cultivation

  1188. of humility

  1189. in the

  1190. heart and

  1191. the weakening

  1192. of pride in

  1193. this life.

  1194. And we

  1195. therefore seek

  1196. our words and

  1197. actions to be

  1198. what we believe

  1199. and teach from

  1200. God's word.

  1201. brothers and

  1202. sisters you do

  1203. not need to be

  1204. a great one to

  1205. be humble.

  1206. It is a

  1207. wonderful thing

  1208. to submit our

  1209. egos to

  1210. Christ and to

  1211. walk in

  1212. submission to

  1213. him.

  1214. Amen.
