  1. I have been particularly excited about preaching this particular section of 1 Samuel since we've begun the series.

  2. And that's because when I was younger, a friend of our family's who was an artist gave me this picture,

  3. which was his summary of basically the chapter.

  4. Obviously, my name being Samuel, it was his gift to me.

  5. I could see Tarshi questioning the artistic credibility of this with that facial expression,

  6. but he's famous and you're not.

  7. But I will equally accept a gift from you if it's a summary of a chapter of the Bible.

  8. Let me pray and we're going to get stuck into this chapter.

  9. Father God, we do thank you for your word.

  10. We thank you that you give it to us so that we might know you.

  11. And God, we ask that as you speak tonight that you would help us to listen,

  12. that you would help us to recognize the things that we do or the ways that we approach your word

  13. that maybe prevent us from hearing what it is you have to say.

  14. And I pray that the result will be that as we hear you speak, we will see you clearly and we will live accordingly.

  15. Amen.

  16. Have you ever had a one-sided conversation?

  17. I have a gift which some of you have heard about before and if you're really lucky have seen in action.

  18. Basically, that gift is when the television is on, nothing else exists.

  19. When I was a teenager or maybe just out of high school, so maybe I can't claim youthful ignorance,

  20. but I was dating a girl and we were having a conversation as you do.

  21. This was before you could sit on Facebook all the time and do that sort of stuff.

  22. So we were actually on the phone and I was watching TV and a really, really significant thing came on.

  23. It was an ad or an infomercial or something, something equally life-changing.

  24. And I got sort of really involved in this ad and then at the end of the ad, the show came back on.

  25. I noticed that I was holding a phone to my ear, but there was no one there,

  26. so I put it down and just continued watching the show.

  27. It turned out that my girlfriend at the time had been chatting away and pouring out her heart.

  28. I got in a fair bit of trouble off the back of that.

  29. But a one-sided conversation doesn't really work.

  30. It's necessary that there is two people both giving, both talking, both communicating.

  31. But as we open this chapter of 1 Samuel, it kind of feels like Israel and God are having a one-sided conversation.

  32. The word of the Lord is rare.

  33. There's not many visions.

  34. And we've got to be careful not to let that slip past easily.

  35. We need to remember that this chapter is happening within a historical context.

  36. And if you've missed what we've been looking at throughout this series,

  37. basically God's agenda throughout human history is that he wants a relationship with his people.

  38. That's what he's doing in creation.

  39. That's why there's priests.

  40. That's why there was a tent for them to meet at.

  41. And God's word, which is particularly rare, is a way of just referring to what God has revealed of himself.

  42. His word, if you like, is not so much word as in sit or run or jump or whatever.

  43. It's the stuff that he has shown of himself for us to know.

  44. And it's essential, if people are going to know him, that they get his word, that they get what he reveals of himself.

  45. And so into that context, with a God who wants a relationship and people who want that relationship back,

  46. God is being strangely quiet.

  47. Don't you think?

  48. God's agenda is, I want to know people.

  49. And then we hear at the beginning of this chapter,

  50. in those days, the word of the Lord is rare and there's not many visions.

  51. Now, it's not that he's completely silent,

  52. because just last week when we were looking in chapter 2,

  53. he delivered his word that Eli was about to be judged,

  54. because he'd failed to restrain his sons.

  55. But his word is still rare.

  56. And when it does come, it's almost like people don't want to listen.

  57. They don't want to hear it.

  58. And the problem's not with God.

  59. It's with the priests.

  60. It's where we were last week.

  61. Their job, they're supposed to be the ones who hear God's word and then pass it on.

  62. They're the representatives.

  63. But of course, the problem with that is,

  64. the priests, Hophni and Phinehas, don't even know God.

  65. So they haven't got much hope of introducing God to everyone else,

  66. or teaching everyone else about God.

  67. Now, look at verse 7.

  68. Samuel did not yet know the Lord.

  69. Samuel has been living at the temple.

  70. This is God's house, if you like.

  71. Samuel has been training as a priest.

  72. He's been under Eli's leadership.

  73. And when God actually speaks to him,

  74. like audibly speaks to him,

  75. Samuel doesn't know what's going on.

  76. Because he doesn't yet know the Lord.

  77. He doesn't yet know God's word.

  78. The priests in Israel, the priests of God's people,

  79. have failed so significantly

  80. that a priest in training

  81. doesn't even know who God is.

  82. Doesn't even have a relationship with God.

  83. He hasn't even yet heard the word of the Lord.

  84. That is the whole priestly responsibility,

  85. to bring the word of the Lord to the people.

  86. And yet one of their own in training

  87. doesn't know what the word of the Lord is.

  88. Now, we need to put that in a bit of context.

  89. So last week in chapter 2,

  90. we saw that Samuel is already ministering before the Lord.

  91. He's already growing in the presence of the Lord.

  92. He's already growing in favor with the Lord.

  93. Yet at the same time,

  94. we've just read in chapter 3,

  95. he did not know him.

  96. How can he be in his presence,

  97. be growing in his favor,

  98. but not know him?

  99. The key word comes in verse 7.

  100. It's revealed.

  101. Look at verse 7 again.

  102. Samuel did not yet know the Lord.

  103. The word of the Lord

  104. had not yet been revealed to him.

  105. Now, in spite of the fact that Samuel's in the right place,

  106. he's at the temple,

  107. he's where God's going to speak if he does,

  108. in spite of the fact that he's being trained personally

  109. by God's priest,

  110. the word of the Lord has not yet been revealed to him.

  111. So Samuel's learnt all the right moves.

  112. He's learnt about the sacrifices and the prayers.

  113. He's learnt about what things he's supposed to wear.

  114. But the priests have failed to show him,

  115. this priest in training,

  116. that everything he does,

  117. points to God.

  118. Everything is trying to teach him something about God.

  119. God gave them this whole tent

  120. and this sacrificial system

  121. as a means of revealing himself.

  122. That's the whole point of it.

  123. And the priests are there to maintain it,

  124. to oversee it,

  125. to ensure that it's continuing.

  126. And so they're like a conduit,

  127. if you like,

  128. of God's revelation.

  129. But the priests that we've got at this point in Samuel

  130. are not a conduit,

  131. they've become a barrier.

  132. It's almost like a mirror has been installed backwards.

  133. The whole function of a mirror is for light particles

  134. to hit it and bounce back so that you can see something

  135. that you couldn't see before.

  136. But if you flip that mirror around,

  137. it's completely non-functional.

  138. It's still a mirror,

  139. but the light particles hit it and stop.

  140. You don't see anything extra.

  141. See,

  142. the priestly system is supposed to show people

  143. God that they can't see,

  144. that they can't just approach and know for themselves.

  145. But it's like they've flipped it around backwards

  146. and what was supposed to help

  147. is now blocking their vision

  148. of something that they need to see

  149. if they're going to know God.

  150. And God hasn't yet dealt with that barrier.

  151. He's about to,

  152. but so long as these priests stand there as a barrier,

  153. Samuel does not and will not know the Lord.

  154. He's in the right place,

  155. but with the barrier there,

  156. he cannot know the Lord.

  157. God hasn't revealed himself yet,

  158. at least not directly.

  159. And for Samuel to know God,

  160. in fact,

  161. for anyone to know God,

  162. God has to take the initiative to reveal himself.

  163. You can't take hold of God by force.

  164. God has to come and introduce himself to you.

  165. I was wasting some time last night,

  166. actually,

  167. in front of the television

  168. and just the fantastic show,

  169. The Bachelor,

  170. was giving an encore episode,

  171. Bachelor Australia.

  172. Now,

  173. for anyone who hasn't had the opportunity

  174. to waste some time watching this show,

  175. let me give you the basic premise.

  176. There's some guy who apparently used to be

  177. a topless waiter,

  178. and apparently that's really appealing.

  179. And then there's 20 girls

  180. fighting for his affection.

  181. And it's just,

  182. it's comical to watch.

  183. These girls are sitting there

  184. and they're devastated

  185. because they haven't had their chance

  186. to get some time with this guy.

  187. I'm like,

  188. there's 20 of you,

  189. that's the whole point.

  190. But every single one of them

  191. is getting really emotional

  192. and really catty,

  193. and, you know,

  194. the word above,

  195. catty.

  196. They're getting very aggressive

  197. towards one another

  198. because they want their chance

  199. to get to know this guy.

  200. And you watch them scheming.

  201. And so the guy will come in

  202. and pick the girl

  203. he wants to talk to,

  204. and he'll take them for a walk

  205. off to the other side of the house

  206. and they'll sit down and talk.

  207. And the other girls

  208. kind of try and sneak in

  209. and hover

  210. as if somehow

  211. they can force their way in

  212. to having a conversation

  213. with this guy.

  214. And it just keeps not working.

  215. And these girls are left awkwardly

  216. kind of standing next

  217. to a conversation

  218. that's happening

  219. just trying to hope

  220. they can get into it.

  221. And it's like

  222. the bachelor's sitting there

  223. and he's like,

  224. hi.

  225. Just keeps talking to the girl

  226. that he wants to talk to

  227. because he has all the power

  228. in this scenario.

  229. It's all about

  230. who he wants to get to know.

  231. If he doesn't want to get to know,

  232. you don't get your flower,

  233. you go home

  234. and you've made an idiot

  235. of yourself on TV

  236. and that's all that you've gained.

  237. But in a relationship like that,

  238. one person has the power

  239. and it's all about

  240. his initiative.

  241. And it's not exactly the same,

  242. but on some level,

  243. God has all the power

  244. when it comes to relating to him.

  245. No matter how clever you are,

  246. no matter how,

  247. what ways you invent

  248. to come and start

  249. a relationship with God,

  250. actually it only begins

  251. if he chooses

  252. to reveal himself to you.

  253. And so Samuel's

  254. in the right place.

  255. Samuel's training as a priest.

  256. Samuel's doing

  257. all the right things.

  258. But until God reveals himself,

  259. Samuel will just continue

  260. going through the motions

  261. without ever actually

  262. having a relationship.

  263. But thankfully,

  264. God is about to remove

  265. the barrier.

  266. Verse 4.

  267. Then the Lord called Samuel.

  268. We can't underestimate this.

  269. It's just a few words,

  270. but we've just heard

  271. in verse 1,

  272. the word of the Lord

  273. is rare.

  274. We know that we've got

  275. three dodgy priests

  276. standing in the way

  277. and making it really difficult

  278. for Israel to know God.

  279. And God punches through

  280. and breaks the drought,

  281. not with Eli,

  282. the most senior priest,

  283. not with Hophni,

  284. not with Phinehas,

  285. but with Samuel.

  286. He bypasses the dodgy,

  287. failing priesthood

  288. and calls a new one instead.

  289. I mean,

  290. look at Samuel in this story.

  291. Even as someone who doesn't

  292. know the Lord yet,

  293. he's ready to listen.

  294. He's eager to obey,

  295. unlike everyone else.

  296. Eli is asleep in his usual place.

  297. Now, we don't know exactly

  298. where that usual place is.

  299. It doesn't say.

  300. It just says Eli is in his usual place.

  301. But we do know that Eli's

  302. usual place for sleeping

  303. and Samuel's usual place

  304. for sleeping are different.

  305. Because each time Samuel hears his voice,

  306. he has to get up and run

  307. to get to where Eli is

  308. and say,

  309. Eli, you called me.

  310. So we don't know exactly,

  311. but it's in a different place.

  312. But where's Samuel?

  313. Samuel is in the house of the Lord.

  314. Samuel is sleeping where the ark is.

  315. Samuel is where God is.

  316. Now, the ark,

  317. if you're not familiar with that,

  318. is basically a fancy box.

  319. It's a pretty big box.

  320. It's covered in gold.

  321. It's something that Israel

  322. carried with them as they went.

  323. And inside this box

  324. was the tablets of stone

  325. from when God gave

  326. the commandments to Moses.

  327. So this is significant

  328. for their history

  329. because those tablets

  330. represent God's covenant

  331. or God's contract,

  332. if you like,

  333. with Israel.

  334. This was in writing

  335. that God had chosen them.

  336. This is God's way

  337. of committing to them.

  338. And so they carried it around.

  339. It mattered to them.

  340. And it represented

  341. this box and the stuff

  342. that was in it,

  343. God being present

  344. with his people.

  345. So this was in the middle.

  346. This was the centerpiece

  347. of the tent

  348. that Samuel works at.

  349. And this tent

  350. was in the centerpiece

  351. of the country

  352. that Israel had control of.

  353. It was everything to them

  354. because it was God with them.

  355. And so if you wanted

  356. to meet God,

  357. if you wanted to talk to God,

  358. if you wanted to interact

  359. with God,

  360. you did it in the house

  361. of the Lord

  362. where the ark was.

  363. And so Samuel,

  364. at least,

  365. out of all the other priests,

  366. is in the right location

  367. to hear from God.

  368. He's actually there.

  369. If God's going to speak,

  370. Samuel's going to be

  371. the first one to hear it.

  372. Now, that's not to say

  373. God is limited to a room

  374. or a box.

  375. It's not to say

  376. there is a specific country

  377. we need to go

  378. if we want to hear from God.

  379. But it is important

  380. that Samuel is the only one

  381. we find

  382. in the right location

  383. to hear from God.

  384. This was the place

  385. God had told them

  386. he would be.

  387. It was the place

  388. that he had chosen

  389. to limit his dwelling

  390. for them.

  391. And if and when

  392. he does speak,

  393. Samuel is at least

  394. ready to hear.

  395. Now,

  396. I wonder,

  397. for those of us

  398. who call ourselves Christians,

  399. I wonder if we're waiting

  400. for God to speak

  401. into some circumstances

  402. in our life.

  403. I wonder if there's answers

  404. that we're after,

  405. if there's direction

  406. that we want.

  407. But we're kind of like Eli

  408. and we're just in our usual place.

  409. We're not actually going

  410. to look

  411. in the obvious place

  412. where God has said

  413. he's going to be

  414. and he's going to speak.

  415. We sit there going,

  416. God,

  417. I really want to know

  418. what your will is

  419. for my life

  420. with our Bibles closed.

  421. Being in the right location

  422. matters.

  423. But as well as being

  424. in the right place

  425. at the right time,

  426. Samuel's attitude matters.

  427. He sits under authority here

  428. almost before he even

  429. recognizes who the authority is.

  430. He sits under the imperfect

  431. authority of Eli

  432. who we know is already

  433. getting judged by God.

  434. I mean,

  435. after Samuel hears

  436. his name called out,

  437. what's his response?

  438. Verse 4,

  439. have a look.

  440. The Lord called Samuel,

  441. Samuel answered,

  442. here I am.

  443. And then he ran to Eli

  444. and said,

  445. here I am,

  446. you called me.

  447. Samuel's ready to do

  448. whatever is required of him.

  449. He's ready to go.

  450. He's eager.

  451. He doesn't say,

  452. shh,

  453. I'm trying to sleep.

  454. He doesn't say,

  455. temple will be open again

  456. tomorrow about nine

  457. if you can come back then.

  458. Even in the confusion

  459. of running to Eli

  460. three times.

  461. I mean,

  462. can you imagine?

  463. He gets up,

  464. he hears a voice,

  465. goes to Eli,

  466. no,

  467. it wasn't me.

  468. He goes to bed,

  469. what was that?

  470. Again,

  471. runs to Eli

  472. over and over and over

  473. but every time

  474. he says,

  475. here I am.

  476. What do you need?

  477. I'm ready,

  478. I'm willing.

  479. And then finally

  480. when Eli figures out

  481. what's going on,

  482. sends Samuel back

  483. and how does Samuel

  484. respond to hearing from God

  485. knowing that it's God

  486. the very first time?

  487. Verse 10,

  488. the Lord came

  489. and stood there

  490. calling as at the other time

  491. Samuel,

  492. Samuel.

  493. Then Samuel said,

  494. speak for your servant

  495. is listening.

  496. His first response

  497. to the word of God

  498. is I am your servant.

  499. He hasn't even seen

  500. what it looks like

  501. to serve God.

  502. His only model

  503. is three dodgy priests

  504. who use their position

  505. for power

  506. and for abusing women,

  507. forgetting food,

  508. and his first response

  509. to God

  510. when he speaks

  511. is I am willing,

  512. use me.

  513. But calling yourself

  514. God's servant

  515. and actually serving him

  516. are two pretty

  517. different things.

  518. Again,

  519. if you follow Jesus

  520. I'm sure

  521. that you would say

  522. you're ready to obey him.

  523. I'm sure you would say

  524. that your agenda

  525. is to do

  526. what he would have you do.

  527. But do you ever

  528. come to God's word

  529. with a bit of an attitude

  530. of I'm going to see

  531. what it says

  532. before I commit

  533. to doing it?

  534. Do you actually

  535. approach God's word

  536. every time

  537. before God speaks

  538. to you

  539. and say

  540. I'm your servant

  541. just tell me

  542. which way to go?

  543. Or do you open

  544. the Bible

  545. do you come to church

  546. thinking

  547. I'm going to hear

  548. what God has to say

  549. and then I'll consider

  550. whether or not

  551. I think that's the best

  552. thing for me?

  553. When you open

  554. the Bible

  555. and God says

  556. I want you to be

  557. generous

  558. with the things

  559. I've given you

  560. is there a part

  561. of you that goes

  562. not this week

  563. I'm really keen

  564. on a pair of shoes?

  565. Is there a part

  566. of you that goes

  567. let me just have a look

  568. at my situation

  569. my finances

  570. and I'll think about it?

  571. When God calls you

  572. to purity

  573. sexually

  574. do you hear that

  575. and you go

  576. I understand why

  577. but God

  578. I'm just in this

  579. great relationship

  580. me and this girl

  581. we just

  582. we make each other

  583. so happy

  584. physically

  585. it's just great

  586. so I hear what

  587. you're saying

  588. but not for me

  589. right now

  590. or when you open

  591. the Bible

  592. and God calls you

  593. to sacrifice

  594. for Him

  595. calls you

  596. to put Him

  597. first

  598. calls you

  599. to forsake

  600. everything else

  601. in your life

  602. and love Him

  603. more than anything else

  604. do you hear that

  605. and go

  606. God

  607. whatever you need

  608. or do you go

  609. God

  610. just let me think

  611. about whether or not

  612. I'm actually in for that

  613. calling yourself

  614. a servant of God

  615. saying you are following Him

  616. saying you love Him

  617. and actually doing it

  618. are two very

  619. different things

  620. and I wonder

  621. will Samuel still be so eager

  622. when he hears the message

  623. that God's got for him

  624. I mean imagine this

  625. this is Samuel's first

  626. assignment

  627. as a prophet

  628. this is the first message

  629. that God

  630. gives him

  631. listen to it

  632. verse 11

  633. the Lord said to Samuel

  634. see I'm about to do

  635. something in Israel

  636. that will make the ears

  637. of everyone who hears

  638. about it tingle

  639. at that time

  640. I will carry out

  641. against Eli

  642. everything I spoke

  643. against his family

  644. from beginning to end

  645. for I told him

  646. that I will judge

  647. his family forever

  648. because of the sin

  649. he knew about

  650. his sons

  651. blasphemed God

  652. and he failed

  653. to restrain them

  654. therefore I swore

  655. to the house of Eli

  656. the guilt of Eli's house

  657. will never be atoned for

  658. by sacrifice

  659. or offering

  660. Samuel lay down

  661. until morning

  662. and then opened

  663. the doors

  664. of the house

  665. of the Lord

  666. he was afraid

  667. to tell Eli

  668. the vision

  669. this is the moment

  670. of truth

  671. in this chapter

  672. God has broken in

  673. God has spoken

  674. God has called Samuel

  675. and the first message

  676. Samuel gets

  677. is basically this

  678. go and tell

  679. the man who raised you

  680. go and tell

  681. your father figure

  682. Eli even calls

  683. Samuel his son

  684. in this passage

  685. go and tell

  686. that guy

  687. that God

  688. is about to judge him

  689. and there is no hope

  690. for forgiveness

  691. I mean did you catch

  692. that in verse 14

  693. the guilt of Eli's house

  694. will never

  695. be atoned for

  696. judgment is definite

  697. Samuel's not giving

  698. a message to Eli

  699. hoping that Eli

  700. will turn around

  701. and fix his life

  702. and come back to God

  703. Samuel is telling

  704. his father figure

  705. that God's judgment

  706. is coming

  707. and it cannot

  708. be escaped

  709. no wonder

  710. Samuel was scared

  711. this is his first

  712. word from the Lord

  713. and he has to go

  714. to somebody

  715. he cares for

  716. and tell them

  717. that they

  718. will face

  719. the judgment

  720. of God

  721. but this is

  722. the moment

  723. of truth

  724. is it just

  725. lip service

  726. from Samuel

  727. that he's a servant

  728. of God

  729. is it just lip service

  730. that he loves him

  731. that he wants

  732. to follow him

  733. or will he bear

  734. the weight

  735. of speaking

  736. God's word

  737. no matter

  738. what it costs

  739. him personally

  740. look at verse 15

  741. Samuel lay down

  742. until morning

  743. and then he opened

  744. the doors

  745. of the house

  746. of the Lord

  747. he was afraid

  748. to tell Eli

  749. the vision

  750. but Eli

  751. called him

  752. and said

  753. Samuel my son

  754. Samuel answered

  755. again

  756. here I am

  757. what was it

  758. he said to you

  759. Eli asked

  760. do not hide

  761. it from me

  762. may God

  763. deal with you

  764. be it ever

  765. so severely

  766. if you hide

  767. from me

  768. anything

  769. he told

  770. you

  771. so Samuel

  772. told him

  773. everything

  774. hiding nothing

  775. from him

  776. then Eli

  777. said

  778. he is the Lord

  779. let him do

  780. what is good

  781. in his eyes

  782. the Lord

  783. was with Samuel

  784. as he grew up

  785. and he let

  786. none of Samuel's

  787. words fall

  788. to the ground

  789. and all Israel

  790. from Dan

  791. to Beersheba

  792. recognized

  793. that Samuel

  794. was attested

  795. as a prophet

  796. of the Lord

  797. the Lord

  798. continued

  799. to appear

  800. at Shiloh

  801. and there

  802. he revealed

  803. himself to Samuel

  804. through his word

  805. Samuel's faithfulness

  806. in those few verses

  807. there shows

  808. that the situation

  809. has changed

  810. the beginning

  811. of the chapter

  812. we have dodgy

  813. priests

  814. we have a fairly

  815. silent God

  816. and now

  817. they have a prophet

  818. things are about

  819. to be different

  820. for Israel

  821. Samuel is growing

  822. up as somebody

  823. who now knows

  824. God

  825. as somebody

  826. who will speak

  827. God's word

  828. even if it costs

  829. him personally

  830. and it tells us

  831. that God is with him

  832. and God empowers

  833. him

  834. so that the words

  835. he speaks

  836. are effective

  837. but the really

  838. exciting and important

  839. thing in this whole

  840. chapter comes there

  841. in the last verse

  842. we open the chapter

  843. with a quiet God

  844. not many visions

  845. and Samuel

  846. not even knowing

  847. the Lord

  848. and everything

  849. that comes with that

  850. all the problems

  851. now we get to the end

  852. we have the Lord

  853. continuing to appear

  854. at Shiloh

  855. we have God

  856. revealing himself

  857. to Samuel

  858. in a way that

  859. Samuel can pass

  860. the message on

  861. we've got a God

  862. speaking again

  863. a God who wants

  864. to be known

  865. a God who has

  866. pushed over the

  867. barrier of dodgy

  868. priests

  869. and is making

  870. himself available

  871. to his people

  872. now it's tempting

  873. given the focus

  874. on Samuel

  875. in this story

  876. and given the book

  877. is called

  878. One Samuel

  879. to think

  880. that the key

  881. thing to take away

  882. is wow

  883. thank God for Samuel

  884. what a great guy

  885. he's better than

  886. those dodgy priests

  887. we had before

  888. he's the saviour

  889. he's fixed everything

  890. but look again

  891. the big change

  892. both in Samuel

  893. and in all of Israel

  894. is there

  895. the difference between

  896. verse 1 and verse 21

  897. look at them

  898. verse 1

  899. in those days

  900. the word of the Lord

  901. was rare

  902. verse 21

  903. there he revealed

  904. himself to Samuel

  905. through his word

  906. the thing that

  907. changes in this

  908. passage

  909. is not so much

  910. Samuel

  911. it's the word

  912. of the Lord

  913. it's God's word

  914. that makes a

  915. difference to people

  916. it's God revealing

  917. himself

  918. that changes

  919. circumstances

  920. that changes

  921. attitudes

  922. I mean if you

  923. take God's word

  924. out of this chapter

  925. you've still got

  926. Samuel

  927. but he doesn't

  928. know God

  929. nothing changes

  930. you just get

  931. another generation

  932. of dodgy priests

  933. no matter how hard

  934. they try

  935. who can't do the

  936. job that they're

  937. supposed to do

  938. I mean without

  939. God's word

  940. Samuel is useless

  941. he's pointless

  942. I mean he can open

  943. the doors of the

  944. temple

  945. that was one of his

  946. jobs

  947. he can probably tidy

  948. up around the place

  949. but as a priest

  950. he's about as useful

  951. as a comb is

  952. to a bald person

  953. he can't actually

  954. fulfill the function

  955. that he needs to

  956. as a priest

  957. he can't point

  958. people to God

  959. he can't hand on

  960. the revelation

  961. that God has

  962. entrusted to him

  963. God's word

  964. is what matters

  965. God himself

  966. is what matters

  967. and only as God

  968. reveals himself

  969. can Israel

  970. come to know him

  971. now for Israel

  972. at this point

  973. in history

  974. God reveals

  975. God's revelation

  976. of himself

  977. is kind of limited

  978. there's just a

  979. small number of

  980. people that he's

  981. working through

  982. there's a very

  983. specific system

  984. with the tent

  985. and the sacrifice

  986. and all that

  987. and now it was

  988. still sufficient

  989. to define their

  990. whole existence

  991. as a nation

  992. they revolved

  993. around who God

  994. had shown himself

  995. to be

  996. but we get

  997. so much more

  998. than they had

  999. let me read to you

  1000. a couple of verses

  1001. out of Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  1002. chapter 1

  1003. it says

  1004. in the past

  1005. in the past

  1006. God spoke to

  1007. our ancestors

  1008. through the prophets

  1009. at many times

  1010. and in various ways

1011. but in these last days

1012. he has spoken to us

  1013. by his son

  1014. whom he appointed

  1015. heir of all things

  1016. and through whom

1017. he also made the universe

1018. the son is the radiance

  1019. of God's glory

  1020. and the exact

  1021. representation

  1022. of his being

  1023. sustaining all things

  1024. by his powerful word

  1025. after he had provided

  1026. purification for sins

  1027. he sat down

  1028. at the right hand

  1029. of the majesty

  1030. in heaven

  1031. God used to speak

  1032. in bursts

  1033. he used to have

  1034. the odd revelation

  1035. the odd special event

1036. where he would show himself

  1037. with fire

  1038. or with thunder

1039. or with whatever it was

  1040. but now

  1041. in Jesus

  1042. God has blurted

  1043. it all out

  1044. there's no more secrets

  1045. there's nothing more

  1046. he has given us

  1047. everything that we need

  1048. to know

  1049. Jesus is

  1050. the word of God

  1051. the word that Israel

  1052. so desperately

1053. wanted to know more of

  1054. we get it all

  1055. in Jesus

  1056. he is God

  1057. on display

  1058. he is the window

  1059. the mirror

  1060. into the glory

  1061. of God

  1062. Jesus came

1063. so that we could know

  1064. the God of heaven

  1065. Jesus has sacrificed

  1066. himself

1067. so that we can be

  1068. forgiven

  1069. so that the temple

  1070. and the sacrifices

  1071. that we read about

  1072. in 1 Samuel

  1073. and all through

  1074. the Old Testament

  1075. can be replaced

  1076. by a group

  1077. of forgiven people

  1078. gathering around

  1079. God's word

  1080. in scripture

  1081. Jesus has come

  1082. to take away

  1083. the barriers

  1084. to make the access

  1085. easy

  1086. to make the access

  1087. possible

  1088. everything you would

  1089. ever need to know

  1090. about God

  1091. is found in Jesus

  1092. he is the full

  1093. revelation of God

  1094. he is the answer

  1095. to every prayer

  1096. and desire

  1097. of your heart

  1098. he is God's

  1099. full

  1100. and final answer

  1101. to whatever it is

  1102. that you need

  1103. to ask him

  1104. sometimes I think

  1105. we have selective

  1106. hearing

  1107. we hear

  1108. what it is

  1109. that we want

  1110. to hear

  1111. what if God

  1112. is already

  1113. speaking to us

  1114. and we are just

  1115. not listening

  1116. what if

  1117. we are so

  1118. convinced

  1119. that there is

  1120. a specific

  1121. answer

  1122. that we want

  1123. from God

  1124. that we refuse

  1125. to hear

  1126. the one

  1127. that he is

  1128. giving to us

  1129. what if

  1130. you are like

  1131. me

  1132. and God

  1133. is speaking

  1134. down the phone

  1135. and you are

  1136. distracted

  1137. by something

  1138. trivial

  1139. and unimportant

  1140. I know it

  1141. doesn't feel

  1142. trivial

  1143. or unimportant

  1144. but what if

  1145. God is speaking

  1146. to you

  1147. and you are

  1148. just

  1149. not listening

  1150. here is why

  1151. all this stuff

  1152. matters

  1153. here is why

  1154. this matters

  1155. when you go

  1156. to work

  1157. tomorrow

  1158. when you go

  1159. to uni

  1160. when you go

  1161. to school

  1162. here is why

  1163. this matters

  1164. when you have

  1165. a fight

  1166. with your

  1167. friends

  1168. when you are

  1169. overwhelmed

  1170. with stress

  1171. when you can't

  1172. afford your

  1173. bills

  1174. when you are

  1175. wrestling

  1176. with a big

  1177. decision

  1178. about your

  1179. future

  1180. or a job

  1181. or a career

  1182. as you cry

  1183. out to God

  1184. searching for

  1185. his answer

  1186. wanting him

  1187. to speak

  1188. to you

  1189. wanting him

  1190. to be specific

  1191. about your

  1192. circumstance

  1193. and your

  1194. situation

  1195. God's word

  1196. which changes

  1197. everything

  1198. has already

  1199. been spoken

  1200. to you

  1201. in Jesus

  1202. that is

  1203. God's answer

  1204. to unemployment

  1205. to singleness

  1206. to heartache

  1207. to sickness

  1208. Jesus is

  1209. God's word

  1210. to you

  1211. Jesus is

  1212. the best

  1213. answer that

  1214. God has

  1215. for your

  1216. situation

  1217. he's the

  1218. answer to

  1219. the questions

  1220. that you're

  1221. asking

  1222. Jesus

  1223. will give

  1224. you the

  1225. vision

  1226. of God

  1227. which is

  1228. firmer

  1229. than the

  1230. foundation

  1231. that you're

  1232. standing on

  1233. now

  1234. Jesus

  1235. will give

  1236. you the

  1237. vision

  1238. of God

  1239. that can

  1240. allow you

  1241. to pray

  1242. like Hannah

  1243. did

  1244. when she

  1245. still didn't

  1246. have any

  1247. kids

  1248. remember

  1249. she'd had

  1250. her one

  1251. she'd given

  1252. him back

  1253. she's still

  1254. a childless

  1255. woman

  1256. and she

  1257. prays

  1258. I rejoice

  1259. in my

  1260. God

  1261. because there

  1262. is no

  1263. one like

  1264. him

  1265. in Jesus

  1266. God looks

  1267. in your

  1268. situation

  1269. and says

  1270. I love

  1271. you

  1272. in Jesus

  1273. God says

  1274. never will

  1275. I leave

  1276. you

  1277. never will

  1278. I forsake

  1279. you

  1280. in Jesus

  1281. God says

  1282. in everything

  1283. you're going

  1284. through

  1285. I'm working

  1286. for your

  1287. good

  1288. not just

  1289. some vague

  1290. idea of

  1291. good

  1292. your good

  1293. in Jesus

  1294. God says

  1295. I'm sufficient

  1296. when you're

  1297. weak

  1298. when you're

  1299. struggling

  1300. when you're

  1301. suffering

  1302. and in

  1303. Jesus

  1304. God says

  1305. someday

  1306. soon

  1307. I'm going

  1308. to fix

  1309. it all

  1310. someday

  1311. soon

  1312. I'm going

  1313. to right

  1314. every wrong

  1315. I'm going

  1316. to wipe

  1317. every tear

  1318. I'm going

  1319. to end

  1320. all the

  1321. pain

  1322. God is

  1323. not silent

  1324. anymore

  1325. God has

  1326. spoken

  1327. decisively

  1328. and fully

  1329. in his

  1330. son

  1331. the question

  1332. for you

  1333. isn't

  1334. what will

  1335. God say

  1336. in my

  1337. situation

  1338. the question

  1339. is

  1340. are you

  1341. listening

  1342. to what

  1343. he is

  1344. saying

  1345. in Jesus

  1346. because

  1347. Jesus

  1348. changes

  1349. everything

  1350. he changes

  1351. barrenness

  1352. for Hannah

  1353. he changes

  1354. unemployment

  1355. he changes

  1356. sickness

  1357. he changes

  1358. death

  1359. Jesus

  1360. is God's

  1361. word to

  1362. you

  1363. in your

  1364. situation

  1365. whatever

  1366. that situation

  1367. is

  1368. the question

  1369. is

  1370. are you

  1371. listening

  1372. let's

  1373. pray

  1374. father

  1375. god

  1376. we want

  1377. to

  1378. admit

  1379. that we

  1380. take for

  1381. granted

  1382. that you

  1383. have

  1384. given

  1385. us

  1386. free

  1387. access

  1388. to

  1389. your

  1390. word

  1391. we want

  1392. to admit

  1393. that we

  1394. waste

  1395. so much

  1396. time

  1397. and

  1398. opportunity

  1399. that you

  1400. have

  1401. given

  1402. us

  1403. to have

  1404. you

  1405. speak

  1406. into

  1407. our

  1408. lives

  1409. we

  1410. want

  1411. to

  1412. admit

  1413. that we

  1414. distract

  1415. ourselves

  1416. with our

  1417. own

  1418. desires

  1419. or with

  1420. what we

  1421. think

  1422. the

  1423. answers

  1424. should

  1425. be

  1426. and we

  1427. want to

  1428. admit

  1429. that sometimes

  1430. we just

  1431. don't listen

  1432. to the

  1433. better

  1434. answers

  1435. that you

  1436. have

  1437. offered

  1438. us

  1439. in your

  1440. son

  1441. God

  1442. God I

  1443. want to

  1444. pray for

  1445. all of

  1446. us

  1447. in this

  1448. room

  1449. whether

  1450. we're

  1451. wrestling

  1452. with

  1453. stress

  1454. loss

  1455. plenty

  1456. whatever

  1457. it is

  1458. that is

  1459. in our

  1460. situation

  1461. right now

  1462. show us

  1463. how Jesus

  1464. changes

  1465. that

  1466. show us

  1467. how Jesus

  1468. redefines

  1469. that

  1470. God I

  1471. want to

  1472. pray for

  1473. people who

  1474. are hurting

  1475. right now

  1476. that you

  1477. would open

  1478. their ears

  1479. to hear

  1480. that you

  1481. love them

  1482. in Jesus

  1483. for those

  1484. who feel

  1485. sufficient in

  1486. themselves

  1487. open their

  1488. ears to

  1489. hear that

  1490. they need

  1491. you

  1492. and that

  1493. Jesus is

  1494. the only

  1495. way that

  1496. we can

  1497. know you

  1498. and we

  1499. can call

  1500. you our

  1501. heavenly

  1502. father

  1503. God I

  1504. want to

  1505. pray that

  1506. we would

  1507. be people

  1508. who are

  1509. so firmly

  1510. fixed on

  1511. what you

  1512. have done

  1513. for us

  1514. in sending

  1515. your son

  1516. so focused

  1517. on his

  1518. death and

  1519. his resurrection

  1520. in our

  1521. place

  1522. that our

  1523. lives would

  1524. also speak

  1525. your word

  1526. to the

  1527. world around

  1528. us

  1529. may people

  1530. hear of

  1531. your love

  1532. because of

  1533. the hope

  1534. and the

  1535. foundation

  1536. that we

  1537. have

  1538. father speak

  1539. to us

  1540. your servants

  1541. for we

  1542. are listening

  1543. amen
