  1. Father God, we thank you for bringing us together.

  2. We thank you for gifting us in different ways

  3. and for the chance to serve one another when we gather like this.

  4. Lord, I ask right now that you would speak, that it would be your words,

  5. and that as we look at these passages in 1 Samuel,

  6. that we would see you more clearly,

  7. and the result would be we would love you rightly.

  8. Amen.

  9. Sometimes perception doesn't line up with reality.

  10. And this can be sometimes in good ways and sometimes in bad ways.

  11. It could be that you are driving and your perception is

  12. that the gap is small enough for you to get through,

  13. and reality may not be that.

  14. It could be something more personal.

  15. Your perception might be that you need to lose some weight

  16. to be attractive to other people,

  17. but the reality might be far from that.

  18. Perception and reality don't always line up,

  19. and that's a problem if it's true of how we see God.

  20. If we are following a God who's more something that we've designed

  21. in our own mind, a version of God, if you like,

  22. than it is the God of the Bible,

  23. then we set ourselves up for a fall.

  24. In 1 Samuel, Israel has been told that judgment is coming

  25. as we work through these first four chapters,

  26. and we've seen the judgment in chapter 4 that we read last week

  27. and in chapter 4.

  28. They've been told God's not happy,

  29. but if you get to just before the bit that Ali read out,

  30. at the end of chapter 3,

  31. even though they've been told judgment is coming,

  32. from where they sit, their perspective is a little bit different.

  33. Everything still seems to be going okay.

  34. They're about to lose a significant battle,

  35. but if you just, the day before the battle even,

  36. they're living in the country they want to live in.

  37. Hophni and Phinehas are eating well as priests.

  38. They've got lots of girlfriends,

  39. so they're happy with how things are going.

  40. Everything seems fine,

  41. and so they hear God, judgment's coming,

  42. but their perspective is,

  43. we don't actually believe you,

  44. because life's good.

  45. And so their perception and their reality don't line up.

  46. Even though God's been revealing himself to Israel

  47. right throughout their history,

  48. instead of listening,

  49. they've kind of modelled their own version of him.

  50. They've come up with what they think he is like

  51. and how they think he should act,

  52. and what they've done

  53. is they've made him accountable to them

  54. instead of the other way around.

  55. They've kind of set what they think should be his agenda,

  56. and basically what they think God should do

  57. is whatever they want and when they want it.

  58. So if they want protection in a battle,

  59. that's what God is required to do.

  60. If they want food or riches,

  61. that is what God is required to do.

  62. And the result, of course,

  63. of having that sort of a God

  64. is they shout with confidence

  65. when he enters the army's camp.

  66. Even having lost battle,

  67. they get very, very excited.

  68. I remember when I was much younger,

  69. and I really emphasise much younger

  70. because this story's a little on the embarrassing side,

  71. much younger,

  72. I got invited to a formal with a girl that I kind of knew.

  73. She was a fairly attractive girl,

  74. but I didn't know her very well,

  75. and so it struck me as a little bit strange

  76. that she had invited me to her formal.

  77. Now, the way my brain processed that was,

  78. I must be a pretty attractive guy.

  79. Attractive girl asked me to the formal,

  80. I don't know her well,

  81. so she doesn't know if I'm funny or interesting

  82. or boring or arrogant, as the case was.

  83. So, my conclusion was,

  84. I must be attractive.

  85. Now, what this did was

  86. mean that I was very relaxed about the whole event.

  87. I thought, she's so into me

  88. that I don't have to put any effort into this formal,

  89. I'll just rock up.

  90. And so, the date of the formal came around,

  91. and so to prepare myself,

  92. aesthetically, I went for a surf.

  93. And then I got out of the water

  94. about 20 minutes before I had to be at her house,

  95. went past a mate's place,

  96. picked up a suit that sort of fit,

  97. put a shirt on without a tie or a bow tie

  98. or anything like that.

  99. Didn't really feel like wearing leather shoes,

  100. so I put my just skate shoes on,

  101. on the bottom of the suit.

  102. I thought, well, you know,

  103. she's into me,

  104. so it's not going to be an issue.

  105. And I arrived at the front door of her house,

  106. thinking she's just going to be so excited

  107. that I'm here.

  108. She's probably feeling really privileged,

  109. she's probably been counting down the days,

  110. she's probably got a calendar on a wall

  111. with crosses through it.

  112. And I walked in,

  113. and she kind of looked at me,

  114. didn't say anything,

  115. and walked into the next room.

  116. And I discovered that she had spent

  117. three hours at the hairdresser,

  118. had a headache because her hair

  119. was a little bit too tight,

  120. was looking amazing

  121. in a fantastic formal dress

  122. and other things.

  123. And actually,

  124. she wasn't that into me,

  125. she just had a ticket,

  126. and the guy she'd asked couldn't go,

  127. and she thought,

  128. why not ask Sam?

  129. He seems nice enough.

  130. The problem when we have a false perception

  131. is that it leads to false confidence.

  132. If we have an understanding

  133. of something that is incorrect,

  134. we can set ourselves up for a fall.

  135. And in the same way,

  136. Israel has this perception of God

  137. that He needs them,

  138. rather than the other way around.

  139. They've kind of figured out

  140. that God is somebody

  141. who is as much dependent on them

  142. as a country and on their army

  143. as they are a nation

  144. that's dependent on Him.

  145. And so they set themselves up for a fall.

  146. And what God does in this passage

  147. is really important.

  148. It's more than just judgment

  149. on Hophni and Phinehas,

  150. which we looked at a couple of weeks ago.

  151. We see the true character of God

  152. come out in these verses in chapter 4.

  153. God would rather be shamed.

  154. That's what's happening here.

  155. Even though we know otherwise,

  156. everybody who heard about this battle

  157. would have assumed that God lost.

  158. It's what the Philistines thought.

  159. It's what the other nations around

  160. would have thought.

  161. God would rather be embarrassed

  162. than confirm Israel

  163. in their wrong perception of Him.

  164. He could have won the battle

  165. and everybody else would have

  166. continued to think God was great,

  167. but he was more interested

  168. in correcting Israel's wrong perception

  169. because God answers to no one.

  170. He doesn't answer to Israel.

  171. He doesn't answer to you.

  172. He doesn't answer to me.

  173. And He has His own agenda.

  174. Just because we might think

  175. we know what God wants

  176. and we know when God's going to work

  177. or how God's going to work,

  178. He has His own agenda.

  179. And it's been His agenda

  180. since the beginning of creation

  181. and it will be His agenda

  182. until Jesus comes back.

  183. It's this.

  184. God wants to reveal His glory

  185. and He wants to call people

  186. into a relationship with Him.

  187. A right relationship,

  188. not a relationship

  189. where we invent

  190. what we think God is like,

  191. a relationship where we know Him

  192. and we worship Him

  193. and we obey Him.

  194. And if you're following

  195. a version of God

  196. that has more to do

  197. with what you think

  198. than it does to do

  199. with what God

  200. has shown Himself to be like,

  201. then on one level

  202. you're following a false God.

  203. You could even say

  204. you're not following any God at all.

  205. And the problem with that is

  206. a false God or a fake God

  207. can't do anything for you.

  208. There's this scary

  209. but amazing passage

  210. in the New Testament

  211. where these people

  212. are really confident

  213. that they've been following God.

  214. They talk about the miracles

  215. they did in God's name.

  216. They talk about

  217. all the good deeds they did

  218. and at the end of the passage

  219. Jesus says,

  220. get away from me,

  221. I never knew you.

  222. If you have a fake idea

  223. of God

  224. close enough

  225. is not good enough.

  226. There's great confidence

  227. for those who know God

  228. and His power in their life.

  229. That's what we looked at last week.

  230. At the confidence we have

  231. with God's presence

  232. and power working through us.

  233. But there's only pain

  234. and frustration

  235. if instead of following

  236. the God of Scripture

  237. you're following some sort of God

  238. that you have control over,

  239. that you dictate to,

  240. that you instruct.

  241. We need to look to the reality

  242. of who God is

  243. as He has revealed Himself

  244. not as we decide

  245. or we make up.

  246. The first danger

  247. when perception and reality

  248. are different

  249. is that false perception

  250. leads to false confidence

  251. and false confidence

  252. leads to disaster.

  253. But the second danger

  254. when we have perception

  255. and reality

  256. that don't line up

  257. concerning God

  258. is the issue

  259. that the Philistines face

  260. in chapter 5.

  261. If your vision of God

  262. is not the real vision of God,

  263. is not true reality,

  264. then you will end up

  265. replacing God

  266. with a cheap substitute.

  267. The Philistines

  268. had a vision of God

  269. if you like,

  270. a perception of Him

  271. which assumed

  272. that He had to defend Israel.

  273. That was their understanding

  274. of how God's work.

  275. It's Israel's God

  276. so He's bound,

  277. He's like contractually obligated

  278. to win the battle for them.

  279. And so we know

  280. they had a dodgy view of God

  281. because just in the last chapter

  282. they figured they could beat Him

  283. just by manning up.

  284. So granting them

  285. a little bit of grace

  286. that they're not very sharp,

  287. they assumed

  288. God's Israel

  289. had to do certain things.

  290. They had an idea

  291. of how God's worked,

  292. they had an idea

  293. of how their God's worked

  294. and so they projected that

  295. onto the God of Israel

  296. and so when they win,

  297. for them

  298. that confirms everything.

  299. Suddenly the God of Israel

  300. Israel is pretty weak

  301. because he's being beaten

  302. by their God.

  303. That's their process

  304. and so they bring

  305. the ark

  306. which represents God,

  307. they stick it in their God

  308. Dagon's temple

  309. almost like a trophy

  310. to show off

  311. how much better

  312. their God is.

  313. Now the problem

  314. with having wrong perceptions

  315. of God

  316. is that

  317. when He doesn't live up

  318. to those expectations

  319. that we have

  320. which are wrong expectations,

  321. then we start looking

  322. somewhere else.

  323. for somebody

  324. to meet those needs.

  325. But we somehow feel

  326. like we've been let down

  327. so we start looking

  328. for something

  329. or someone else

  330. that we can trust in

  331. and in the end

  332. we settle for something

  333. less than God,

  334. something less powerful

  335. than God,

  336. something that is actually

  337. unable to help us.

  338. Now on one level

  339. I want to be sympathetic

  340. to the Philistines

  341. in this passage

  342. because

  343. our perceptions of God

  344. are not very dissimilar

  345. to theirs.

  346. When we started this series

  347. in 1 Samuel

  348. looking at chapter 1

  349. we asked the question

  350. where is God

  351. when things go wrong

  352. in my life?

  353. That was our starting point

  354. as we got into this book

  355. and it resonates for us

  356. because we know

  357. when things are bad

  358. we want to shake our fist

  359. at God

  360. and say fix it.

  361. Say this isn't fair.

  362. If you're God

  363. and you're good

  364. and you're powerful

  365. fix this.

  366. When life is hard

  367. we're tempted

  368. to look for something else

  369. to satisfy us.

  370. We're tempted

  371. to find identity

  372. in the job

  373. that we have.

  374. We're tempted

  375. to be fulfilled

  376. in relationships

  377. or in significance

  378. or in money

  379. or in power.

  380. When things aren't

  381. going well

  382. we sometimes think

  383. alright God

  384. you failed

  385. I'll find something else.

  386. And that is exactly

  387. what Israel does.

  388. Things have gone wrong

  389. and so the Philistines

  390. assume Israel's God

  391. must be even lower

  392. than their God

  393. Dagon.

  394. But look at how

  395. God responds

  396. in verse 1.

  397. After the Philistines

  398. had captured

  399. the Ark of God

  400. they took it

  401. from Ebenezer

  402. to Ashdod.

  403. Then they carried

  404. the Ark

  405. into Dagon's temple

  406. and set it

  407. beside Dagon.

  408. When the people

  409. of Ashdod

  410. rose early

  411. the next day

  412. there was Dagon

  413. fall on his face

  414. on the ground

  415. before the Ark

  416. of the Lord.

  417. They took Dagon

  418. and put him back

  419. in his place.

  420. But the following

  421. morning when they

  422. rose

  423. there was Dagon

  424. fallen on his face

  425. on the ground

  426. before the Ark

  427. of the Lord.

  428. His head and hands

  429. had been broken off

  430. and were lying

  431. on the threshold

  432. only his body

  433. remained.

  434. That's why to this

  435. day neither the

  436. priests of Dagon

  437. nor any others

  438. who entered

  439. Dagon's temple

  440. at Ashdod

  441. step on the threshold.

  442. God's response

  443. to being put on par

  444. in fact being put

  445. under this God

  446. Dagon

  447. is that the people

  448. wake and find Dagon

  449. flat on his face.

  450. In fact

  451. this powerful

  452. victorious God

  453. Dagon

  454. needs his people

  455. to lift him up

  456. and put him back

  457. where he's supposed

  458. to be.

  459. And just to make

  460. sure that we're

  461. really clear

  462. the next day

  463. he's not only

  464. on his face

  465. again

  466. but he has no

  467. hands

  468. and no head.

  469. God's making

  470. an example

  471. of this pathetic

  472. other God

  473. which literally

  474. hours earlier

  475. the Philistines

  476. would have been

  477. celebrating

  478. confident in.

  479. this Dagon

  480. is now

  481. headless

  482. handless

  483. and helpless.

  484. He has no power.

  485. He can't do

  486. anything

  487. he can't say

  488. anything

  489. and next to the

  490. God of heaven

  491. he's pathetic

  492. he's just a statue.

  493. The God of the Bible

  494. is not like us

  495. he doesn't think

  496. like us

  497. he's not accountable

  498. to us

  499. and he doesn't

  500. always work

  501. in the way

  502. that we would

  503. expect him to

  504. but that doesn't

  505. mean he stopped

  506. working.

  507. It doesn't

  508. mean he has

  509. lost power

  510. it doesn't

  511. mean he's

  512. beaten

  513. he doesn't

  514. require an

  515. army to

  516. defend him

  517. he doesn't

  518. need to be

  519. put back in

  520. his place

  521. when he

  522. falls over

  523. he doesn't

  524. need his

  525. people to

  526. stroke his

  527. ego so

  528. that he

  529. knows that

  530. he's

  531. loved

  532. Israel's

  533. God

  534. our God

  535. needs

  536. nothing

  537. even

  538. without the

  539. army he

  540. is quite

  541. capable of

  542. defending

  543. himself

  544. look at

  545. verse 6

  546. the Lord's

  547. hand was

  548. heavy upon

  549. the people

  550. of Ashdod

  551. and its

  552. vicinity

  553. he brought

  554. devastation

  555. upon them

  556. and afflicted

  557. them with

  558. tumors

  559. when the men

  560. of Ashdod

  561. saw what

  562. was happening

  563. they said

  564. the ark

  565. of the

  566. God of

  567. Israel

  568. must not

  569. stay here

  570. with us

  571. because

  572. his hand

  573. is heavy

  574. upon us

  575. and upon

  576. Dagon

  577. our God

  578. so they

  579. called together

  580. all the

  581. rulers of

  582. the Philistines

  583. and asked

  584. them

  585. what shall

  586. we do

  587. with the

  588. ark of

  589. the God

  590. of Israel

  591. and they

  592. answered

  593. have the

  594. ark of

  595. the God

  596. of Israel

  597. moved to

  598. Gath

  599. so they

  600. moved the

  601. ark of

  602. the God

  603. of Israel

  604. now it

  605. basically cycles

  606. on

  607. issues

  608. bump it

  609. to the

  610. next town

  611. more issues

  612. bump it

  613. to the

  614. next town

  615. but I

  616. want to

  617. show you

  618. a couple

  619. of things

  620. really

  621. importantly

  622. Dagon

  623. had no

  624. head

  625. and no

  626. hands

  627. and straight

  628. away we

  629. hear about

  630. a God

  631. who does

  632. have the

  633. power to

  634. act

  635. did you

  636. notice

  637. that

  638. Dagon

  639. has his

  640. head

  641. and hands

  642. removed

  643. and in

  644. verse 6

  645. the first

  646. thing we

  647. hear is

  648. that the

  649. Lord's

  650. hand

  651. is heavy

  652. upon the

  653. people

  654. of Ashdod

  655. the writer

  656. sets this

  657. up on

  658. purpose

  659. in one

  660. corner we've

  661. got headless

  662. handless

  663. Dagon

  664. the cheap

  665. substitute

  666. God

  667. and then on the

  668. other side we have

  669. Yahweh

  670. Israel's God

  671. whose hand

  672. is active

  673. and heavy

  674. and powerful

  675. in judgment

  676. on the

  677. Philistines

  678. the Philistines

  679. are even

  680. worried for

  681. Dagon

  682. now

  683. quick send

  684. God away

  685. because Dagon

  686. is struggling

  687. while this

  688. God is

  689. around

  690. God wins

  691. the victory

  692. that Israel

  693. can't

  694. he's not

  695. just a

  696. passive

  697. bystander

  698. while all

  699. this is

  700. going on

  701. he used

  702. the Philistines

  703. to bring

  704. judgment

  705. on Israel

  706. but now

  707. he's showing

  708. the Philistines

  709. what true

  710. reality is

  711. just as he

  712. would not

  713. give in

  714. to Israel's

  715. false

  716. perception

  717. he will

  718. not allow

  719. the Philistines

  720. to assume

  721. that they

  722. are more

  723. powerful

  724. than he

  725. is

  726. he will

  727. not let

  728. them think

  729. that Dagon

  730. is some

  731. great and

  732. mighty God

  733. and so

  734. true reality

  735. in the words

  736. of Hannah

  737. from chapter

  738. 2

  739. there is no

  740. one holy

  741. like the

  742. Lord

  743. there is no

  744. one like

  745. our God

  746. all creation

  747. is his

  748. all creation

  749. answers to

  750. him and

  751. not by

  752. strength

  753. will one

  754. prevail

  755. when our

  756. perception of

  757. God doesn't

  758. line up with

  759. reality

  760. it's easy

  761. to settle

  762. for a

  763. cheap

  764. substitute

  765. when we

  766. put wrong

  767. expectations

  768. on God

  769. and then

  770. feel like

  771. he's let

  772. us down

  773. we are

  774. tempted to

  775. look for

  776. other

  777. substitutes

  778. but unfortunately

  779. wherever we

  780. look we get

  781. disappointed

  782. because all we

  783. find are

  784. headless

  785. handless

  786. helpless

  787. powerless

  788. cheap

  789. imitations

  790. if our

  791. perception of

  792. God is

  793. wrong

  794. then like

  795. Israel

  796. it starts

  797. to damage

  798. the way

  799. we interact

  800. with him

  801. the relationship

  802. gets distorted

  803. if God is

  804. somebody who

  805. needs my

  806. help

  807. then serving

  808. him as

  809. part of a

  810. ministry or

  811. church in

  812. my life

  813. obeying him

  814. becomes something

  815. that I do

  816. for his

  817. benefit

  818. as a

  819. favour to

  820. him because

  821. I'm just

  822. that kind

  823. of person

  824. if God

  825. is someone

  826. who needs

  827. my help

  828. then instead

  829. of trusting

  830. him with

  831. my life

  832. I'll look

  833. after me

  834. and then

  835. once that's

  836. done I'll

  837. see what

  838. God needs

  839. but the

  840. reality of

  841. God is

  842. shown here

  843. again in

  844. this passage

  845. it's shown

  846. over and

  847. over through

  848. all of

  849. scriptures

  850. and throughout

  851. human history

  852. God is in

  853. control

  854. God is

  855. sovereign

  856. he is

  857. all powerful

  858. all knowing

  859. his love

  860. is beyond

  861. measure

  862. and he is

  863. good

  864. and anything

  865. that I offer

  866. to God

  867. any service

  868. any obedience

  869. is for my

  870. sake

  871. not for him

  872. anything that

  873. I do for

  874. God is a

  875. gift from

  876. him for

  877. me

  878. the opportunity

  879. to obey

  880. him

  881. the opportunity

  882. to know

  883. him

  884. the opportunity

  885. to serve

  886. him

  887. the opportunity

  888. to give

  889. finances

  890. all of it

  891. is a gift

  892. from God

  893. for me

  894. because our

  895. God needs

  896. nothing

  897. all creation

  898. is his

  899. already

  900. all creation

  901. will answer

  902. to him

  903. ultimately

  904. and so we

  905. must not

  906. let our

  907. perceptions

  908. block our

  909. view of the

  910. reality of

  911. God

  912. when we see

  913. who he

  914. really is

  915. we get

  916. released from

  917. these delusions

  918. of self

  919. importance

  920. and instead

  921. we can replace

  922. that with the

  923. joy of security

  924. in a God

  925. who is good

  926. and a God

  927. who is in

  928. control

  929. when perception

  930. and reality

  931. don't line up

  932. we get into

  933. trouble

  934. but that begs

  935. the question

  936. how do we

  937. focus on

  938. reality

  939. how do we

  940. avoid the

  941. perceptions

  942. which our

  943. society is

  944. filled with

  945. well let me

  946. suggest two

  947. things

  948. I'm sure that

  949. many of you

  950. are familiar

  951. with the

  952. story of

  953. Troy

  954. whether you're

  955. familiar with

  956. the mythology

  957. version or the

  958. Brad Pitt version

  959. doesn't really

  960. matter

  961. the point

  962. of it is

  963. that the

  964. Greeks are at

  965. war with the

  966. Trojans

  967. and the

  968. battle's been

  969. raging and

  970. raging and so

  971. the Greeks

  972. come up with a

  973. plan

  974. let's pretend

  975. that we've

  976. left

  977. let's leave

  978. this statue

  979. of a horse

  980. as like an

  981. offering

  982. and they

  983. stick some

  984. soldiers hiding

  985. inside it

  986. and the

  987. Trojans come

  988. down to the

  989. beach the

  990. next morning

  991. and think

  992. we've won

  993. we're fantastic

  994. let's take

  995. this statue

  996. up inside

  997. our city

  998. walls

  999. and celebrate

  1000. this victory

  1001. that we've

  1002. had

  1003. and sure

  1004. enough that

  1005. night the

  1006. soldiers sneak

  1007. out open the

  1008. gates and the

  1009. entire Greek

  1010. army descends

  1011. on Troy and

  1012. destroys it

  1013. two things when

  1014. it comes to

  1015. focusing on

  1016. reality beware

  1017. false victory

  1018. just like the

  1019. Trojan Israelites

  1020. marched off into

  1021. battle in chapter

  1022. four assuming

  1023. that victory was

  1024. good

  1025. assuming that

  1026. victory was

  1027. guaranteed because

  1028. up to this

  1029. point life was

  1030. going fine

  1031. up to this

  1032. point nothing

  1033. bad had

  1034. happened and

  1035. so they

  1036. assumed that

  1037. meant God

  1038. endorsed the

  1039. way they were

  1040. living they

  1041. assumed that

  1042. meant everything

  1043. was fine it's

  1044. the same with

  1045. the Philistines

  1046. they win a

  1047. battle against

  1048. Israel and

  1049. they assume

  1050. that means

  1051. Dagon is

  1052. equally powerful

  1053. with Israel's

  1054. God but

  1055. both times the

  1056. victories proved

  1057. to be false

  1058. proved to be

  1059. short-lived

  1060. Israel's confidence

  1061. is defeated by

  1062. the Philistines

  1063. and in turn the

  1064. Philistines are

  1065. afflicted by

  1066. God

  1067. beware false

  1068. victories

  1069. so often in our

  1070. lives and in the

  1071. lives of those

  1072. around us we

  1073. let our

  1074. situation and

  1075. our circumstance

  1076. dictate our

  1077. perception of

  1078. God

  1079. so if life is

  1080. good that means

  1081. God's good

  1082. that means God's

  1083. happy with me

  1084. if life's bad

  1085. either God's

  1086. powerless to fix

  1087. it or he's not

  1088. good or he

  1089. doesn't care

  1090. and so our

  1091. situation dictates

  1092. what we think

  1093. God is like

  1094. but learn the

  1095. lesson from

  1096. Israel beware of

  1097. false victories

  1098. don't let the

  1099. situation dictate

  1100. your circumstance

  1101. there is another

  1102. parable that Jesus

  1103. tells in Luke 16

  1104. about a rich man

  1105. and a beggar

  1106. the rich man is

  1107. wealthy and the

  1108. story describes him

  1109. as being someone who

  1110. enjoys fine foods

  1111. and fine things in

  1112. all of his life

  1113. and Lazarus is a

  1114. beggar who sits

  1115. outside this rich

  1116. man's house

  1117. begging for

  1118. anything even the

  1119. scraps from this

  1120. rich man's table

1121. and to look at the

  1122. two it would be

  1123. easy to guess that

  1124. maybe God is happier

  1125. with the rich man

  1126. than he is with

  1127. this beggar

  1128. even the dogs

  1129. lick the sores of

  1130. Lazarus

  1131. and then it fast

  1132. forwards to the

  1133. end

  1134. Lazarus sits in

  1135. heaven with God

  1136. and the rich man

  1137. is in hell

  1138. begging for

  1139. relief

  1140. God is good

  1141. God is powerful

  1142. and he is

  1143. fulfilling his

  1144. plan whether it

  1145. looks like that to

  1146. us or not

  1147. his will of

  1148. revealing himself

  1149. and calling people

  1150. into a relationship

  1151. with himself

  1152. will not fail

  1153. no matter how

  1154. it looks

  1155. we must be

  1156. careful

  1157. not to be

  1158. convinced by

  1159. false victory

  1160. even as Israel

  1161. fails to be the

  1162. instrument that

  1163. reveals God to

  1164. the nations around

  1165. he is still

  1166. revealed

  1167. we finished last

  1168. week with a sad

  1169. conclusion from the

  1170. woman giving birth

  1171. that the glory has

  1172. departed Israel

  1173. just a couple of

  1174. verses later we

  1175. find that glory being

  1176. revealed in the

  1177. temple at Ashdod

  1178. God reveals that he

  1179. is still in control

  1180. he is still more

  1181. powerful than

  1182. whatever else anyone

  1183. may put their trust

  1184. in regardless of

  1185. how it might look

  1186. God is fulfilling

  1187. his plan and

  1188. purpose and even

  1189. in our world which

  1190. denies that God is

  1191. even there God

  1192. will have his way

  1193. even in a world

  1194. full of wrong

  1195. perceptions about

  1196. God eventually all

  1197. will see him all

  1198. will recognize him

  1199. all will bow before

  1200. his majesty and

  1201. his holiness

1202. how do we focus on

  1203. reality we beware of

  1204. false victories

  1205. and secondly we look

  1206. to the place where

  1207. God has revealed

  1208. himself we look to

  1209. Jesus in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  1210. chapter 1 says that

  1211. in the past God

  1212. spoke to our

  1213. ancestors through the

  1214. prophets at many

  1215. times and in various

  1216. ways but in these

  1217. last days he's spoken

1218. to us by his son

  1219. whom he appointed

  1220. heir of all things

  1221. and through whom he

  1222. made the universe

  1223. the sun is the

  1224. radiance of God's

  1225. glory and the exact

  1226. representation of his

  1227. being

  1228. Colossians 1

  1229. the sun is the

  1230. image of the

  1231. invisible God

  1232. John 1

  1233. no one has ever

  1234. seen God but the

1235. one and only son who

  1236. is himself God and

  1237. is in closest

  1238. relationship with the

  1239. father has made him

  1240. known

1241. in Jesus you see God

  1242. shining brightest

1243. if you want to see

  1244. the reality of God

  1245. there is only one

  1246. place to look and

  1247. that is where God

  1248. has shown himself

  1249. and that is in

  1250. Jesus his power

  1251. his love his

  1252. righteous judgment

  1253. his patience with

  1254. sinful people his

  1255. provision his

  1256. faithfulness it's all

  1257. on display in Jesus

  1258. life and death on

  1259. the cross now for

  1260. everyone else the

  1261. cross looks like the

  1262. moment where God

  1263. loses for the

  1264. Romans at that point

  1265. that was where they

  1266. stamped out this

  1267. annoying little sect

  1268. that was starting up

  1269. this new church this

  1270. new religion for the

  1271. Jewish leaders they

  1272. finally got rid of

  1273. the competition for

  1274. Satan he thought he'd

  1275. won as Jesus hung

  1276. there dying it looked

  1277. like God was either

  1278. powerless or he didn't

  1279. care but beware false

  1280. victory in the empty

  1281. tomb God is vindicated

1282. not even death can stop

  1283. God's plan not

  1284. not soldiers not

  1285. plotting politicians

  1286. not rebellious people

  1287. nothing can stop the

  1288. will of God

  1289. nothing can stop what

1290. he is doing and his

  1291. will is that all

1292. might see his glory and

  1293. honor him as God

1294. that is his plan that is

1295. his desire and the joy

1296. for us is that the

1297. reality of who God is

  1298. far exceeds any

  1299. perception that we

  1300. might invent God is

  1301. more loving than we

  1302. hope God is more

  1303. powerful than we

  1304. imagine God is more

  1305. in control than we

  1306. can begin to

  1307. understand our false

  1308. perceptions of God

1309. fall so far short of

1310. who he really is the

  1311. watered-down versions

1312. miss out on so much

  1313. goodness and holiness

1314. and love and mercy if

  1315. your perception of God

  1316. doesn't drive you to

  1317. your knees in humble

  1318. dependence on his

  1319. power while at the

  1320. same time drive you

  1321. into the air leaping

  1322. for joy and singing

  1323. with thankfulness in

  1324. light of his unfailing

  1325. love then look again

  1326. look again at Jesus

  1327. look again at the

  1328. empty cross and the

  1329. empty tomb look again

1330. at the risen Savior look

  1331. again at God because

  1332. the reality far exceeds

  1333. any perception that we

  1334. could invent far exceeds

  1335. any vision we might

1336. hope for look again at

  1337. Jesus

1338. Father God we thank and

  1339. praise you that you

  1340. have chosen to reveal

  1341. yourself that we don't

1342. have to guess at what

1343. you're like but God we

1344. want to confess that when

1345. things don't go our way

  1346. when things aren't

1347. exactly the way we want

1348. them to be that so often

1349. we begin to doubt you

1350. God help us to see in

  1351. Jesus the limitless love

1352. that you have for us

1353. help us to trust your

  1354. goodness and your power

  1355. and your sovereignty

1356. God if there are blind

1357. spots in our vision of

1358. you if there are things

1359. that are wrong about the

1360. way that we see you and

1361. the way that we love you

1362. and the way that we

  1363. follow you show us

1364. Jesus help us to see you
