  1. Father God, we pray that you would give us the same mind that you have on the Lord Jesus

  2. and that we would agree with your assessment of him and that he is Lord and Christ.

  3. I pray, Father, that you would continue to shape us as a church that pursues your glory.

  4. And individually, Lord, we ask that you would help us to see a commitment to your church

  5. and the impact that it makes for all of eternity, not just for our lives but the lives of others.

  6. And so be with us now as your word is opened.

  7. I pray that you would speak to us and challenge where we're at with you and your people.

  8. Amen.

  9. Edward Lorenz was a mathematician working in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology back in the 1960s

  10. on the computer modelling a weather system.

  11. So sorry, Rob, if I get this completely wrong.

  12. He devised a program which, once he typed in certain data, could calculate what the subsequent weather pattern was going to be.

  13. One day, he made a mistake.

  14. He meant to type in a six-digit number, 0.506127, but instead, he only typed in the first three digits, 0.506.

  15. It was a minute error, only one part in a thousand.

  16. As it turns out, the difference in the weather patterns was enormous.

  17. It was as if, this is how he describes it, as if a tiny atmospheric disturbance in China,

  18. no greater than the beat of a butterfly's wings, a week or so later becoming a Force 12 hurricane in New York,

  19. his discovery became known as the butterfly effect.

  20. It explains why our weather forecasters, sorry, Rob, have a difficult time predicting the weather too often in advance

  21. or even getting at the weather that we like to have it weekend by weekend.

  22. And so instead of blaming Rob of weather zone, we should blame it on the butterflies in China.

  23. That's much better as a Rob blame it on the butterflies in China.

  24. His discovery is that a little thing over here can have a magnifying effect that just grows and grows and grows.

  25. And so the term butterfly effect.

  26. Unfortunately, there is no butterfly effects in our lives magnifying the little contribution that we make to the world.

  27. On a whole, individual actions on our part are a bit like stones tossed into a very large lake.

  28. We make a splash, but the ripples just die out very quickly.

  29. We are remembered by just a few and our contribution to humanity remembered even less.

  30. Most of us have to face the fact that we will drop the little pebble of our lives into the turbulent ocean of world events

  31. and in no time at all, the surface will bear no trace of our passing.

  32. It's depressing, but it's a fact of life.

  33. I know virtually nothing about the younger lives of my grandparents and nothing about my great-grandparents.

  34. It is this purposelessness that is one of the chief anxieties of people.

  35. But it doesn't have to be bleak and meaningless.

  36. Because the ripples of one life did not die away with death.

  37. The effect of the life and ministry, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus

  38. have increased in amplitude and expanded in diameter right across the globe

  39. from 2,000 years ago with a bunch of blokes in Galilee.

  40. At the beginning of Acts, we see that Jesus returns to heaven after his resurrection.

  41. But his impact and his influence in the world is not over.

  42. Jesus is still at work in this world and this is what the book of Acts is about

  43. and why it is so relevant for us today.

  44. The very first sentence in Acts says,

  45. in my former book,

  46. in my former book, Theophilus, this is Dr. Luke writing,

  47. I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach.

  48. And the word began there at the beginning of Acts

  49. is the word that helps us understand the relevance of this book.

  50. What Luke, the author, stresses here is that what Jesus did on earth

  51. was the beginning of his doing and his teaching.

  52. Jesus is not done with his work and with his teaching.

  53. He's not dead and he's not absent.

  54. He's alive and he's present.

  55. He's still speaking.

  56. He is still working.

  57. He is still building his church.

  58. Whenever people come under the authority of his name

  59. and receive the forgiveness of sins and trust in his power,

  60. his influence continues to spread and increase.

  61. And that is what we long to see happen here in Chatswood

  62. through this church and around this city and indeed across this world.

  63. And my prayer is that as we go through this commitment series,

  64. our annual commitment series here in Acts,

  65. Jesus himself will speak and act and give us a glimpse

  66. of his purpose for the church

  67. and the part that we play in that

  68. and therefore the purpose of our lives.

  69. May such a glimpse of Jesus and his purpose

  70. cause us to make a radical commitment

  71. to what he is doing

  72. to make his name great in this world.

  73. Because in the end, it's all about Jesus.

  74. He is Lord and King and Ruler and Creator

  75. and Sustainer and Inherit of all that is.

  76. The ripple impact of Jesus' life and ministry

  77. as obscure as he was in first century Palestine

  78. has only increased

  79. and will continue to increase for all of eternity.

  80. And so we pick up our text today

  81. partway through Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost.

  82. So if you haven't got your Bibles open,

  83. turn to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  84. We're kicking off at verse 22.

  85. The promised Holy Spirit has arrived

  86. and a large crowd has gathered

  87. to see what the fuss is all about.

  88. You might expect Peter to get up

  89. and to preach on the coming of the Spirit,

  90. but as Jesus is the focus of Acts,

  91. so he's the focus of this sermon.

  92. This former coward, Peter,

  93. who denied Jesus,

  94. stands up in front of more than 3,000 people

  95. and says in Acts 2.23,

  96. you, with the help of wicked men,

  97. put him to death, that's Jesus,

  98. by nailing him to the cross.

  99. And again in verse 36,

  100. God has made this Jesus,

  101. whom you crucified,

  102. both Lord and Christ.

  103. It's pretty strange here,

  104. but Peter gets up in front of this crowd

  105. of more than 3,000 people

  106. and it seems that he's holding them accountable

  107. for the death of Jesus.

  108. On the most part,

  109. they weren't even likely there.

  110. So how can he say that?

  111. It seems a little tad rude, actually.

  112. What he's getting at

  113. is that the essence of the crime

  114. against Jesus

  115. was not the ending

  116. of his physical life per se.

  117. It was the rejection of God

  118. in Jesus' life.

  119. Jesus was handed over

  120. to be crucified

  121. on the grounds of blasphemy.

  122. That is,

  123. he claimed to be the Son of God.

  124. He claimed that God

  125. had endorsed him

  126. as Messiah.

  127. And so if a person

  128. rejects what Jesus claims,

  129. then you vote for blasphemy.

  130. And to vote for blasphemy

  131. is to endorse

  132. in the depth of your heart

  133. the cry of the crowd

  134. in front of Pilate,

  135. crucify this man.

  136. And what Peter does

  137. with his sermon here

  138. is he draws the clearest

  139. possible contrast

  140. between what the crowd

  141. did with Jesus

  142. and what God

  143. did with Jesus.

  144. And Peter shows us

  145. four ways

  146. in which God

  147. endorses Jesus

  148. and the stark contrast

  149. between the way

  150. God treats Jesus

  151. and the way

  152. the crowd treats Jesus

  153. and by implication

  154. the way that we

  155. have treated Jesus.

  156. Firstly,

  157. God endorsed Jesus

  158. by working miracles

  159. and signs and wonders

  160. through him.

  161. Verse 22,

  162. men of Israel,

  163. listen to this.

  164. Jesus of Nazareth

  165. was a man

  166. accredited by God

  167. to you

  168. by miracles,

  169. wonders and signs

  170. which God did

  171. among you

  172. through him

  173. as you yourselves know.

  174. The miracles

  175. were God's

  176. certification

  177. of Jesus.

  178. They were God's

  179. vote,

  180. God's testimony.

  181. When Jesus

  182. did a miracle

  183. it was God's

  184. endorsement

  185. of Jesus.

  186. and what

  187. did the religious

  188. leaders do

  189. when Jesus

  190. said,

  191. Lazarus,

  192. come out

  193. of the tomb

  194. and they're

  195. standing over there

  196. and they're

  197. watching a dead

  198. man walk

  199. out of the tomb,

  200. what did they do?

  201. Okay,

  202. guys,

  203. huddle,

  204. how are we

  205. going to kill

  206. Jesus?

  207. God's

  208. endorsement

  209. of Jesus

  210. and their

  211. rejection

  212. of Jesus.

  213. Secondly,

  214. God endorsed

  215. Jesus by

  216. planning his

  217. death for

  218. the sins

  219. of all

  220. people.

  221. Verse 23,

  222. this man

  223. was handed

  224. over to you

  225. by God's

  226. set purpose

  227. and foreknowledge

  228. and you

  229. with the help

  230. of wicked

  231. men put him

  232. to death

  233. by nailing

  234. him to

  235. the cross.

  236. God

  237. plans

  238. Jesus'

  239. death,

  240. the people

  241. plan Jesus'

  242. death and

  243. the difference

  244. between God's

  245. plan to

  246. crucify Jesus

  247. and Pilate

  248. and the crowd's

  249. plan to

  250. crucify

  251. Jesus

  252. was that

  253. Pilate and

  254. the crowd

  255. were rejecting

  256. Jesus as a

  257. mere pretender

  258. and God

  259. was honouring

  260. Jesus as

  261. the saviour

  262. of the world.

  263. God planned

  264. the death of

  265. Jesus not to

  266. disown him

  267. or to

  268. dishonour him

  269. or to

  270. reject him

  271. but to

  272. glorify him

  273. as the

  274. perfect,

  275. flawless

  276. lamb of

  277. God who

  278. takes away

  279. the sin

  280. of the

  281. world.

  282. Thirdly,

  283. God

  284. endorsed

  285. Jesus by

  286. raising him

  287. from the

  288. dead.

  289. God's

  290. powerful

  291. response to

  292. their rejection

  293. and crucifixion

  294. of Jesus is

  295. in verse

  296. 24,

  297. but God

  298. raised him

  299. from the

  300. dead,

  301. freeing him

  302. from the

  303. agony of

  304. death because

  305. it was

  306. impossible for

  307. death to

  308. keep its

  309. hold on

  310. him.

  311. So Peter

  312. stands before

  313. the crowd

  314. of 3,000.

  315. You

  316. crucified

  317. him.

  318. It's your

  319. treatment of

  320. Jesus.

  321. God raised

  322. him from

  323. the dead.

  324. That's his

  325. response.

  326. Fourthly,

  327. God endorsed

  328. Jesus by

  329. exalting him

  330. to the

  331. right hand

  332. and putting

  333. all his

  334. enemies under

  335. his feet.

  336. Verses

  337. 34 and

  338. 35,

  339. Peter quotes

  340. Psalm 110

  341. to show

  342. the significance

  343. of Jesus'

  344. exaltation.

  345. It says,

  346. the Lord

  347. said to

  348. my Lord,

  349. sit at

  350. my right

  351. hand until

  352. I make

  353. your enemies

  354. a footstool

  355. for your

  356. feet.

  357. And so

  358. this particular

  359. endorsement of

  360. Jesus,

  361. where God

  362. takes him

  363. and moves

  364. into his

  365. right hand,

  366. exposes

  367. the ultimate

  368. horror of

  369. rejecting

  370. Jesus.

  371. In

  372. rejecting

  373. Jesus,

  374. they have

  375. rejected

  376. the one

  377. whom God

  378. declared to

  379. be the

  380. Lord of

  381. the universe

  382. by exalting

  383. him to

  384. his right

  385. hand.

  386. And so

  387. the decisive

  388. thrust of

  389. Peter's sermon

  390. is summed

  391. up in

  392. verse 36.

  393. Therefore,

  394. let all

  395. Israel be

  396. assured of

  397. this.

  398. God has

  399. made this

  400. Jesus,

  401. whom you

  402. crucified,

  403. both Lord

  404. and Christ.

  405. God

  406. endorsed

  407. Jesus as

  408. the worker

  409. of miracles

  410. on earth.

  411. God

  412. endorsed

  413. Jesus as

  414. the perfect

  415. sacrifice

  416. for sins.

  417. God

  418. endorsed

  419. him as

  420. Christ,

  421. the Messiah,

  422. by raising

  423. him from

  424. the dead.

  425. God

  426. endorsed

  427. him as

  428. the Lord

  429. of everything

  430. by exalting

  431. him all

  432. the way to

  433. the highest

  434. place in

  435. the universe

  436. and making

  437. him supreme

  438. over all

  439. of his

  440. enemies.

  441. And so

  442. the crucial

  443. issue in

  444. this sermon

  445. of Peter's

  446. is not

  447. the rejection

  448. or the

  449. killing of

  450. a man,

  451. but the

  452. denial of

  453. God.

  454. You see,

  455. to reject

  456. Jesus,

  457. is Peter's

  458. point here,

  459. is in fact

  460. to reject

  461. God.

  462. To vote

  463. no to

  464. Jesus is

  465. to stand

  466. in opposition

  467. to God.

  468. That's the

  469. issue.

  470. And that

  471. is what

  472. cut them

  473. to the

  474. heart.

  475. Peter means

  476. for his

  477. audience

  478. here to

  479. feel the

  480. clash

  481. between

  482. their

  483. rejection

  484. of Jesus

  485. and God's

  486. acceptance

  487. and endorsement

  488. of Jesus.

  489. What matters

  490. here ultimately

  491. is not that

  492. they killed

  493. a man,

  494. but that

  495. they are

  496. standing in

  497. opposition to

  498. God.

  499. And this

  500. is a

  501. shocking

  502. thing for

  503. these people

  504. to hear

  505. and extremely

  506. hard for

  507. them to

  508. admit.

  509. Because

  510. these 3,000

  511. people have

  512. gathered for

  513. worship.

  514. It is the

  515. day of

  516. Pentecost.

  517. They are

  518. religious people

  519. that Peter

  520. is talking

  521. to.

  522. They are

  523. moral people.

  524. They are

  525. worshipping

  526. people.

  527. But he is

  528. telling them

  529. that their

  530. minds are

  531. totally at

  532. odds with

  533. God.

  534. They claim

  535. to know

  536. God.

  537. They claim

  538. to love

  539. God and

  540. worship God

  541. and follow

  542. God.

  543. But Peter

  544. says that

  545. they are

  546. diametrically

  547. opposed to

  548. God.

  549. And so if

  550. we say that

  551. we know

  552. God,

  553. but reject

  554. God's

  555. endorsement

  556. of Jesus,

  557. then we

  558. don't really

  559. know God.

  560. And

  561. worse,

  562. we're

  563. actually

  564. against

  565. God.

  566. And this

  567. is what

  568. cuts

  569. Peter's

  570. hearers to

  571. the heart.

  572. They saw

  573. for the

  574. first time

  575. that their

  576. zeal

  577. for God

  578. had actually

  579. been a

  580. zeal

  581. against

  582. God.

  583. And so

  584. after years

  585. of denial

  586. and running

  587. from God,

  588. the question

  589. is to

  590. Peter,

  591. what are

  592. we going

  593. to do?

  594. And

  595. Peter's

  596. response is

  597. twofold in

  598. verse 38.

  599. Repent

  600. and be

  601. baptized

  602. every one

  603. of you

  604. in the

  605. name of

  606. Jesus

  607. Christ

  608. for the

  609. forgiveness

  610. of your

  611. sins

  612. and you

  613. receive the

  614. gift of

  615. the Holy

  616. Spirit.

  617. And so

  618. they need

  619. two things.

  620. They need

  621. forgiveness

  622. and they

  623. need the

  624. Holy Spirit.

  625. And what

  626. we desperately

  627. need and

  628. what God

  629. is willing

  630. to give

  631. is forgiveness.

  632. We have

  633. violated

  634. God.

  635. We have

  636. disobeyed

  637. God.

  638. And there

  639. is only

  640. one hope

  641. that this

  642. God,

  643. through the

  644. atoning

  645. death of

  646. his son,

  647. might

  648. forgive us

  649. for our

  650. sin against

  651. him.

  652. And so

  653. I say

  654. to us

  655. all here

  656. today,

  657. worshipping

  658. people,

  659. as Peter

  660. did to

  661. verse 4

  662. in verse

  663. 40 to

  664. the crowd,

  665. be saved.

  666. Be saved

  667. from this

  668. crooked

  669. generation.

  670. On the

  671. basis of

  672. God's

  673. word,

  674. I declare

  675. that there

  676. is a

  677. God who

  678. rules the

  679. universe.

  680. verse.

  681. There is

  682. a holy

  683. law that

  684. he has

  685. given us,

  686. his word

  687. that we

  688. have trampled

  689. all over

  690. and ignored.

  691. And in

  692. the name

  693. of Jesus

  694. Christ,

  695. there is

  696. forgiveness

  697. for our

  698. sin against

  699. God.

  700. That is

  701. our first

  702. need,

  703. our primary

  704. need,

  705. and God

  706. in Jesus

  707. Christ

  708. stands ready

  709. to give

  710. it to

  711. anyone who

  712. comes to

  713. him in

  714. repentance

  715. and faith.

  716. Repentance

  717. involves

  718. turning from

  719. any conviction.

  720. It's a

  721. transformation

  722. of the

  723. mind.

  724. It's a

  725. turning away

  726. from any

  727. conviction

  728. about Jesus

  729. other than

  730. that he is

  731. the son of

  732. God,

  733. crucified,

  734. raised,

  735. ascended,

  736. reigns as

  737. Lord and

  738. king of the

  739. universe.

  740. And that he

  741. is the lamb

  742. of God who

  743. has come to

  744. take away

  745. the sin of

  746. the world.

  747. And as

  748. Lord and

  749. Christ over

  750. all that

  751. he has

  752. made,

  753. he expects

  754. our

  755. allegiance.

  756. And so

  757. we see in

  758. verse 41

  759. that about

  760. 3,000 people

  761. accepted

  762. Peter's

  763. message and

  764. were added

  765. to the

  766. church in

  767. that day.

  768. That's

  769. astounding.

  770. In chapter

  771. 1,

  772. verse 15,

  773. it says

  774. that the

  775. believers

  776. numbered

  777. 120.

  778. and now

  779. there's

  780. 3,120

  781. and 11

  782. apostles.

  783. My goodness,

  784. their staff

  785. teams are

  786. smaller than

  787. ours.

  788. That's

  789. massive growth.

  790. 3,120 people

  791. have repented

  792. of their

  793. rejection of

  794. God and

  795. now have a

  796. common focus,

  797. the Lord Jesus

  798. Christ.

  799. And this

  800. brings us,

  801. now left

  802. with 3,120

  803. people,

  804. brings us

  805. to their

  806. second need

  807. and our

  808. deep second

  809. need as

  810. well.

  811. It's here,

  812. our need is

  813. to have God

  814. himself reign

  815. in our lives

  816. where sin

  817. and ignorance

  818. and rebellion

  819. used to reign.

  820. Those 3,120

  821. people and

  822. those here

  823. gathered at

  824. St. Paul's

  825. Chatswood

  826. need wisdom

  827. and guidance

  828. and love

  829. and joy

  830. and peace

  831. and patience

  832. and goodness

  833. and self

  834. control.

  835. We need

  836. extraordinary

  837. power for

  838. the task

  839. of living

  840. with Christ

  841. the Lord.

  842. We need

  843. extraordinary

  844. power of

  845. the Holy

  846. Spirit to

  847. pursue any

  848. discipline

  849. that we

  850. call to

  851. in commitment

  852. series.

  853. We need

  854. extraordinary

  855. power for

  856. revealing to

  857. this world

  858. that Jesus

  859. is Lord

  860. and Christ.

  861. We need

  862. the power

  863. of the

  864. Spirit for

  865. the task

  866. of being

  867. a new

  868. community

  869. under the

  870. Lordship

  871. of Jesus.

  872. Notice

  873. that the

  874. call from

  875. Peter in

  876. verse 40

  877. and 41

  878. is a

  879. call to

  880. leave one

  881. group.

  882. He says

  883. be safe

  884. from this

  885. corrupt

  886. generation.

  887. He says

  888. leave that

  889. group

  890. and join

  891. this new

  892. group

  893. the

  894. fellowship.

  895. These new

  896. converts

  897. were brought

  898. together

  899. through a

  900. common

  901. salvation

  902. into a

  903. common

  904. devotion.

  905. There is

  906. no

  907. leave the

  908. corrupt

  909. generation

  910. and go

  911. and find

  912. your own

  913. way.

  914. There is

  915. no

  916. individualism.

  917. There is

  918. no solo

  919. Christianity.

  920. There is

  921. no consumer

  922. Christianity.

  923. Even the

  924. term I think

  925. volunteering

  926. at church

  927. seems really

  928. foreign in

  929. this picture

  930. of the

  931. early

  932. church.

  933. The picture

  934. here is

  935. not a

  936. bunch of

  937. poor

  938. slaves who

  939. have sort

  940. of been

  941. given a

  942. job in

  943. some

  944. factory

  945. somewhere

  946. by God.

  947. It's

  948. more poor

  949. slaves who

  950. have been

  951. made

  952. family

  953. members

  954. brought

  955. into the

  956. family

  957. business

  958. as joint

  959. owners and

  960. heirs of

  961. that business

  962. to do the

  963. work of

  964. their new

  965. generous

  966. father.

  967. God

  968. And there

  969. are four

  970. things happening

  971. in the

  972. church where

  973. the spirit

  974. of God

  975. reigns.

  976. These

  977. believers were

  978. devoted,

  979. that is,

  980. they were

  981. seriously,

  982. continually,

  983. single-mindedly

  984. and earnestly

  985. pursuing and

  986. persisting in

  987. four things

  988. that are the

  989. keys to

  990. spiritual growth

  991. and maturity.

  992. Have a look at

  993. it in verse

  994. 42.

  995. The first is

  996. teaching.

  997. They devoted

  998. themselves to

  999. the apostles'

  1000. teaching.

  1001. Under the

  1002. reign of the

  1003. Holy Spirit,

  1004. these new

  1005. Christians were

  1006. hungry for

  1007. the word of

  1008. God.

  1009. Being filled

  1010. with the

  1011. spirit and

  1012. being filled

  1013. with the

  1014. word of

  1015. God go

  1016. together like

  1017. peas and

  1018. carrots.

  1019. Where the

  1020. spirit reigns,

  1021. a love for

  1022. God's word

  1023. reigns.

  1024. The

  1025. backbone of

  1026. a healthy

  1027. Christian life

  1028. is the

  1029. word of

  1030. God.

  1031. 1 Peter

  1032. 2.2

  1033. says,

  1034. like newborn

  1035. babes

  1036. craves pure

  1037. spiritual milk

  1038. so that by

  1039. it you may

  1040. grow up in

  1041. your salvation.

  1042. And so

  1043. friends,

  1044. I want to

  1045. encourage you

  1046. to read your

  1047. Bible,

  1048. to mark it

  1049. up,

  1050. to bring it

  1051. to church.

  1052. Each of us

  1053. must make

  1054. sure that

  1055. sometimes,

  1056. somewhere in

  1057. our week,

  1058. we are being

  1059. taught.

  1060. We have a

  1061. core value

  1062. written up

  1063. there on our

  1064. wall that

  1065. says Christ

  1066. centered Bible

  1067. saturation.

  1068. That's a

  1069. value.

  1070. A value is

  1071. something that

  1072. we say that

  1073. we hold deep

  1074. within us.

  1075. It shapes and

  1076. forms who we

  1077. are.

  1078. And the

  1079. way we

  1080. know that

  1081. we actually

  1082. value that

  1083. value is

  1084. that it

  1085. gets worked

  1086. out in

  1087. practice in

  1088. our commitment

  1089. to actually

  1090. reading and

  1091. studying the

  1092. word of

  1093. God.

  1094. In other

  1095. words,

  1096. don't tell me

  1097. you hold to

  1098. that value

  1099. and tick

  1100. that box

  1101. if you

  1102. shelved your

  1103. Bible over

  1104. here somewhere.

  1105. But let me

  1106. say that

  1107. more than

  1108. study is

  1109. needed.

  1110. Yes,

  1111. we want to

  1112. be a

  1113. Bible-believing

  1114. church and

  1115. saturation of

  1116. the scriptures,

  1117. but we want

  1118. to be a

  1119. Bible-living

  1120. church,

  1121. a Bible-obeying

  1122. church,

  1123. not just

  1124. information being

  1125. fed into us,

  1126. but transformation

  1127. of our life.

  1128. The second

  1129. is fellowship.

  1130. They devoted

  1131. themselves to

  1132. the fellowship,

  1133. verse 42.

  1134. Now,

  1135. this kind of

  1136. fellowship didn't

  1137. occur before the

  1138. day of Pentecost.

  1139. The Greek

  1140. word used

  1141. here isn't

  1142. even found

  1143. in the

  1144. Gospels,

  1145. and the

  1146. key idea

  1147. to it is

  1148. commonality.

  1149. Every time

  1150. the word is

  1151. used in the

  1152. New Testament,

  1153. it stands

  1154. or it means

  1155. some kind

  1156. of sharing.

  1157. That's what

  1158. the word

  1159. fellowship

  1160. means.

  1161. Now,

  1162. we have a

  1163. lot of

  1164. ideas that

  1165. come to

  1166. mind when

  1167. we think

  1168. of Christian

  1169. fellowship,

  1170. and I

  1171. would suggest

  1172. that most

  1173. of them are

  1174. pretty

  1175. tame,

  1176. or lame

  1177. even.

  1178. The

  1179. foundational

  1180. idea is

  1181. that of

  1182. giving,

  1183. sharing,

  1184. sacrificing.

  1185. That is,

  1186. Christian

  1187. fellowship

  1188. actually

  1189. costs.

  1190. So,

  1191. fellowship is

  1192. not a

  1193. sentimental

  1194. idea of

  1195. togetherness.

  1196. giving,

  1197. things like

  1198. it's not

  1199. tea and

  1200. biscuits,

  1201. or whatever

  1202. it is that

  1203. young people

  1204. do,

  1205. coke and

  1206. pizza or

  1207. something.

  1208. It doesn't

  1209. just happen

  1210. because two

  1211. Christians are

  1212. sitting together

  1213. and chatting.

  1214. Just because you're

  1215. a Christian,

  1216. they're a

  1217. Christian,

  1218. and we just

  1219. happen to be

  1220. talking about

  1221. football,

  1222. a great

  1223. night of

  1224. fellowship.

  1225. fellowship

  1226. comes through

  1227. giving,

  1228. and true

  1229. fellowship

  1230. costs.

  1231. Many

  1232. Christians have

  1233. never known

  1234. the joy of

  1235. Christian

  1236. fellowship

  1237. because they

  1238. have never

  1239. learnt to

  1240. actually give

  1241. themselves away.

  1242. some visit a

  1243. church or even

  1244. a community

  1245. group with

  1246. an eye only

  1247. for their

  1248. needs,

  1249. and they

  1250. walk away

  1251. saying there

  1252. was no

  1253. fellowship

  1254. there.

  1255. I've heard

  1256. it this

  1257. year a

  1258. couple of

  1259. times.

  1260. But we

  1261. only have

  1262. fellowship when

  1263. we make it a

  1264. practice to

  1265. reach out to

  1266. others and to

  1267. give something

  1268. of ourselves to

  1269. others,

  1270. regardless of

  1271. what's happening

  1272. in our lives.

  1273. thirdly,

  1274. they devote

  1275. themselves to

  1276. the breaking

  1277. of bread.

  1278. Now the

  1279. breaking of

  1280. bread here

  1281. might refer

  1282. to the

  1283. Lord's

  1284. Supper,

  1285. or it

  1286. might refer

  1287. to the

  1288. fellowship

  1289. they have

  1290. over a

  1291. meal,

  1292. or both.

  1293. I have a

  1294. tendency to

  1295. lean that

  1296. it's about

  1297. the Lord's

  1298. Supper

  1299. specifically,

  1300. but most

  1301. likely,

  1302. what happened

  1303. was that

  1304. they had

  1305. a meal

  1306. together,

  1307. a main

  1308. meal of

  1309. steak and

  1310. chips,

  1311. and then

  1312. they would

  1313. take the

  1314. bread and

  1315. the wine

  1316. and they

  1317. would

  1318. remember

  1319. Christ's

  1320. death

  1321. together.

  1322. What this

  1323. means is

  1324. that Christ

  1325. and his

  1326. atoning work

  1327. was constantly

  1328. before this

  1329. new community.

  1330. Daily,

  1331. they would

  1332. bring their

  1333. hearts up to

  1334. solemn and

  1335. joyous

  1336. contemplation.

  1337. There is a

  1338. real sense of

  1339. wanting to be

  1340. together and

  1341. to share

  1342. together,

  1343. and the

  1344. ongoing basis

  1345. of their

  1346. being together

  1347. and sharing

  1348. together was

  1349. their fellowship

  1350. in the Lord

  1351. Jesus Christ.

  1352. He was the

  1353. linchpin of

  1354. their

  1355. togetherness.

  1356. Fourthly,

  1357. they devoted

  1358. themselves to

  1359. the prayers.

  1360. When they

  1361. got together,

  1362. they ate

  1363. together,

  1364. they prayed

  1365. together,

  1366. and they

  1367. praised

  1368. together.

  1369. This

  1370. togetherness

  1371. was not

  1372. one of those

  1373. churchy kind

  1374. of togetherness

  1375. things where

  1376. you can come

  1377. together and

  1378. spend all night

  1379. talking about

  1380. church but

  1381. never mention

  1382. Jesus.

  1383. This is

  1384. Jesus at

  1385. the center.

  1386. When they

  1387. got in

  1388. touch with

  1389. each other,

  1390. they got in

  1391. touch with

  1392. God together.

  1393. Where the

  1394. spirit reigns,

  1395. the hearts of

  1396. God's people

  1397. move up

  1398. towards him

  1399. in prayer.

  1400. What a

  1401. wonderful picture

  1402. of this new

  1403. community of

  1404. transformed lives

  1405. where the

  1406. spirit reigns.

  1407. They've been

  1408. rescued from

  1409. sin through

  1410. the gospel of

  1411. the Lord

  1412. Jesus Christ.

  1413. They've been

  1414. brought together

  1415. in a new

  1416. spirit-transformed

  1417. community.

  1418. So make

  1419. no mistake

  1420. here, this

  1421. is a work

  1422. of God.

  1423. This impressive

  1424. community didn't

  1425. just happen

  1426. because a few

  1427. people decided

  1428. to turn over

  1429. a new leaf and

  1430. start some

  1431. new club.

  1432. This was a

  1433. radical

  1434. transformation

  1435. controlled by

  1436. the sovereign

  1437. hand of God

  1438. and God

  1439. enabled the

  1440. apostles to

  1441. do wonders

  1442. and it says

  1443. here that the

  1444. Lord added to

  1445. their number

  1446. daily those

  1447. who were being

  1448. saved.

  1449. This is God

  1450. at work through

  1451. the life and

  1452. witness of his

  1453. people and this

  1454. sort of community

  1455. cannot be

  1456. manufactured by

  1457. tweaking a few

  1458. programs.

  1459. The Christian

  1460. community has

  1461. its origin in

  1462. and continues

  1463. under the

  1464. proclamation of

  1465. the message

  1466. that the

  1467. crucified Jesus

  1468. is Lord and

  1469. Christ and all

  1470. true fellowship

  1471. is founded upon

  1472. and focused on

  1473. the gospel and

  1474. the result is

  1475. other person

  1476. centered love as

  1477. lives are

  1478. transformed by

  1479. that gospel.

  1480. The two are

  1481. inseparable.

  1482. Is it any

  1483. wonder people

  1484. were impressed

  1485. with this new

  1486. society growing

  1487. up in Jerusalem?

  1488. True Christian

  1489. fellowship

  1490. naturally

  1491. overflows

  1492. into mission

  1493. as the world

  1494. wants a slice

  1495. of the Christian

  1496. community and

  1497. the power that's

  1498. behind that

  1499. community.

  1500. our world

  1501. needs to see

  1502. church communities

  1503. witnessing to the

  1504. reality of gospel

  1505. shaped restored

  1506. relationships.

  1507. It is quite

  1508. clear in Luke's

  1509. mind that a

  1510. Christian is not

  1511. an individualist

  1512. who enjoys some

  1513. kind of private

  1514. communion with God

  1515. but a member of a

  1516. new society

  1517. inescapably bound

  1518. up with every

  1519. other Christian in a

  1520. mutual solidarity of

  1521. a radically deep

  1522. kind.

  1523. It is a wonderful

  1524. picture of the

  1525. church right here

  1526. where the spirit of

  1527. God reigns.

  1528. We see Christians

  1529. relating to the

  1530. word of God,

  1531. relating to each

  1532. other and the

  1533. word of God and

  1534. relating to God and

  1535. each other and the

  1536. word of God and

  1537. relating to God and

  1538. each other and the

1539. word of God and the

  1540. world.

1541. Let me just throw a

  1542. caution here in

  1543. against

  1544. idealising it,

  1545. this church,

  1546. in Acts 2.

  1547. It's a wonderful

  1548. picture.

  1549. But if we're not

  1550. careful, we can

  1551. paint an unrealistic

  1552. picture of it.

  1553. The kind of

  1554. blessings God has

  1555. given them in his

  1556. mercy and in their

  1557. weakness and in their

  1558. imperfection comes with

  1559. groaning.

  1560. right here in Acts

  1561. 2.

  1562. They're in

  1563. honeymoon period.

  1564. Everything's

  1565. fantastic.

1566. And they will be for

  1567. a couple of

  1568. chapters.

  1569. But here in Acts

  1570. 2, we have the

  1571. beginnings of a

  1572. vintage administrative

  1573. hassle and pressure.

  1574. It's not obvious

  1575. here.

  1576. We'll see it next

  1577. week.

  1578. Meeting the needs of

  1579. 3,000 people and

  1580. leading them into

  1581. joy-filled mission

  1582. is very messy.

  1583. And it will

  1584. always be messy.

  1585. These are, you

  1586. go from a church

  1587. with 11 leaders and

  1588. 120 members, a few

  1589. extra here, you

  1590. know, fill up these

  1591. seats and you've got

  1592. some sort of a

  1593. picture of what the

  1594. early church was

  1595. like.

  1596. And then jam 3,000

  1597. extra people in

  1598. amongst it.

  1599. 3,000 new babies

  1600. in Jesus.

  1601. Now, in my

  1602. family, you put

  1603. one new baby in

  1604. the house, it's

  1605. chaos.

  1606. It's chaos for 12

  1607. months.

  1608. It's just madness.

  1609. Sleep deprivation,

  1610. all the concerns,

  1611. worries, anxieties,

  1612. and 3,000 of them,

  1613. man, I'm moving to

  1614. Brazil.

  1615. It's an issue is

  1616. what's happening

  1617. here.

  1618. It's important for

  1619. us to realise it

  1620. unless we think

  1621. that out there

  1622. somewhere there is

  1623. a perfect church

1624. that I need to go

1625. and find and to be

  1626. part of.

  1627. Or unless we have

  1628. the other response

  1629. and we fold our

  1630. hands here and groan

  1631. and whinge and

  1632. complain and when

  1633. this church gets

  1634. perfect, then I'm

  1635. going to make a

  1636. contribution then.

  1637. In Acts chapter,

  1638. sorry, in 2

    2 Corinthians 11:28

  1639. Corinthians 11

  1640. verse 28,

  1641. Paul,

  1642. in chapter 11,

  1643. he gives his long

  1644. list of all his

  1645. issues and struggles

  1646. in ministry and

  1647. all his burdens in

  1648. ministry and right at

1649. the end of the list

  1650. he says,

  1651. apart from other

  1652. things, there is a

  1653. daily pressure on me

  1654. of my anxiety for

  1655. all the churches.

  1656. This is the

  1657. apostle Paul speaking.

  1658. The apostle Paul

  1659. was blessed by God

  1660. in planting multitude

  1661. after multitude of

  1662. successful churches.

  1663. His ministry was

  1664. blessed.

  1665. The effect of this

  1666. blessing, this

  1667. wonderful blessing

  1668. and this success

  1669. and this growth

  1670. was what he called

  1671. the daily pressure

  1672. of concern for

  1673. all the churches.

  1674. With blessing

  1675. comes groaning.

  1676. With blessing

  1677. comes hardship

  1678. and difficulties.

  1679. That's normal.

  1680. When you look

  1681. around the church

  1682. and you see

  1683. blessing and

  1684. successes,

  1685. you'll also see

  1686. mess and sin

  1687. and mistakes

  1688. and difficulties.

  1689. That's normal.

  1690. And we are

  1691. feeling it right

  1692. here now as a

  1693. church.

  1694. Let me tell you,

  1695. I am feeling

  1696. the daily pressure

  1697. for just one

  1698. church.

  1699. I couldn't

  1700. imagine what it

  1701. would be like to

  1702. be the apostle

  1703. Paul.

  1704. Let me tell you

  1705. that God has

  1706. wonderfully blessed

  1707. us as a church

  1708. in the past 12

  1709. to 18 months.

  1710. There is some

  1711. great ministry

  1712. momentum.

  1713. A number of

  1714. people have come

  1715. to Christ and

  1716. committed to our

  1717. church family.

  1718. For the blokes

  1719. amongst us

  1720. and who didn't

  1721. make it yesterday

  1722. morning,

  1723. you missed out

  1724. on a great

  1725. man's breakfast.

  1726. Jeremy Kirk,

  1727. who comes along

  1728. here occasionally

  1729. but mainly in our

  1730. morning congregation,

  1731. gave a wonderful

  1732. testimony of how

  1733. he came into

  1734. this church as an

  1735. unbeliever, just

  1736. thinking I'd be good

  1737. for the kids.

1738. In no time at all,

  1739. Debbie's leading him

  1740. in our for course.

  1741. Eyes came alike

  1742. to the gospel.

  1743. Andrew Green at

  1744. the same time

  1745. invites him to

  1746. come along for

  1747. journaling and

  1748. prayer, Bible

  1749. reading and prayer

  1750. on a Wednesday

  1751. morning and he

  1752. said on one of

  1753. those Wednesday

  1754. mornings, bang,

  1755. he said that was

  1756. the moment,

  1757. decisive moment

  1758. where he felt the

  1759. spirit of God

  1760. came on him and

  1761. all of a sudden

  1762. joy, eyes came

  1763. open.

  1764. This is the

  1765. moment Christ

  1766. flooded into his

  1767. life.

  1768. That was a

  1769. wonderful testimony.

  1770. The time to

  1771. build pledging

  1772. was an amazing

  1773. expression of

  1774. unity and

  1775. commitment across

  1776. the church.

  1777. The $680,000

  1778. that we pledged

  1779. over the next

  1780. three years was

  1781. not just a few

  1782. people throwing

  1783. in masses of

  1784. bucks, it was

  1785. across the whole

  1786. church.

  1787. And yet, there

  1788. is a deep

  1789. groaning as we

  1790. are faced with

  1791. hard decisions

  1792. right now with

  1793. our budget for

  1794. next year.

  1795. And it's

  1796. right in the

  1797. midst of such

  1798. blessing, of

  1799. such joy.

  1800. Church is

  1801. messy.

  1802. And can I

  1803. suggest that even

  1804. as I'm calling

  1805. you through this

  1806. series to

  1807. commitment to the

  1808. local church and

  1809. St. Paul's here

  1810. and our vision

  1811. that we have for

  1812. the future and

  1813. our core values,

  1814. expect it to be

  1815. both joyful and

  1816. hard.

  1817. Expect both of

  1818. those things to

  1819. go together.

  1820. As messy as the

  1821. church is,

  1822. Ephesians 3

  1823. says that God's

  1824. universal plan for

  1825. all ages is that

  1826. through the church

  1827. the manifold

  1828. wisdom of God

  1829. should be made

  1830. known to the

  1831. rulers and

  1832. authorities in

  1833. the heavenly

  1834. realms according

  1835. to his eternal

  1836. purposes which he

  1837. accomplished in

  1838. Christ Jesus our

  1839. Lord.

  1840. When we align our

  1841. purpose with God's

  1842. purpose to make

  1843. Jesus known

  1844. through the

  1845. church to this

  1846. universe, then

  1847. our life, one

  1848. life, our drop

  1849. in the lake, that

  1850. ripple doesn't

  1851. peter out but it

  1852. grows in magnitude

  1853. through all of

  1854. eternity.

  1855. And so my call

  1856. today and through

  1857. this series is for

  1858. us all to reassess

  1859. our commitment to

  1860. the Lord Jesus and

  1861. his purpose is being

  1862. worked out through

  1863. his local church

  1864. here, St. Paul's

  1865. even to all the

  1866. universe.

  1867. Amen.
