  1. Gracious Father, we thank you for your word.

  2. Thank you for your church.

  3. I pray that as we look into your word this morning

  4. that we might see something of our heritage

  5. and that as we look to the future

  6. that we might be committed to the name Christ

  7. and seeing that name declared and glorified

  8. throughout this area of Chatswood.

  9. We pray for your sake. Amen.

  10. St. Paul's first ministry in the Chatswood area

  11. began almost or just over 112 years ago

  12. with a Sunday school on the 1st of September 1901.

  13. It wasn't a great start because no one turned up.

  14. The weather wasn't so great.

  15. Three children turned up the next week

  16. and the first official church service

  17. was a couple of months later

  18. on the 8th of December 1901.

  19. The official opening of St. Paul's

  20. was conducted on the 15th of December 1901

  21. by the Archdeacon of Cumberland,

  22. the Venerable John Langley,

  23. to whom my wife Natalie is a direct descendant.

  24. So I am married into St. Paul's history

  25. more than most.

  26. A new church doesn't just pop up.

  27. It doesn't just arrive one Sunday.

  28. Many things happen over a period of time

  29. before any church,

  30. and a church like St. Paul's comes to be.

  31. And as always, with anything,

  32. there are different motives and agendas at play

  33. in order to see something like a church pop up.

  34. And some of those agendas and motives

  35. lack any sort of vision.

  36. There are those who are dissatisfied

  37. with the ministry of another church

  38. and figure it's much better to start our own thing.

  39. There are those who felt that the church

  40. was a good place for social activities.

  41. For others, it was a place for mutual support

  42. and friendships and family interactions

  43. and cultural pursuits.

  44. For others, the church is a healthy place

  45. for young people of marriageable age.

  46. That is St. Paul's the dating service

  47. before RSVP and all those other things

  48. came into being.

  49. On the other hand,

  50. there are those with a real gospel vision.

  51. There are those who are doing evangelism

  52. on steam trains.

  53. A boy riding the district on horseback

  54. to break the news of a Sunday school

  55. and a church coming into being.

  56. There were the four young men

  57. who in the summer of 1901-02

  58. met weekly for prayer before dawn

  59. out in the bush

  60. and spent time walking around

  61. looking for potential church sites

  62. to plant a church.

  63. And so here we are,

  64. 112 years later,

  65. on the site that was chosen.

  66. It's Commitment Sunday.

  67. We're thinking about commitment

  68. to the mission and vision of St. Paul's

  69. here in Chatswood

  70. as we look ahead to 2014 and beyond.

  71. And my question for us today

  72. is what is it about our beginning

  73. that will most define our present

  74. and our future as a church?

  75. Is it St. Paul's the dating service?

  76. Or is it a gospel-driven vision?

  77. And so in thinking about that question,

  78. what is it about our beginnings

  79. that will so define our present,

  80. our future,

  81. I want us to take us back to the beginning?

  82. Back past 112 years

  83. on the lower north shore of Sydney,

  84. back past the Anglican Church

  85. starting with chaplain arriving

  86. with the first fleet,

  87. back past the act of supremacy

  88. in November 1534,

  89. that brought the Church of England

  90. into existence,

  91. back to the first century

  92. and the church in Antioch.

  93. The church in Antioch

  94. is our mother church.

  95. It is our ancestry.

  96. It is our bloodline.

  97. In the first half of chapter 11,

  98. Peter is up in front of the leaders

  99. in Jerusalem explaining

  100. why he, as a Jew,

  101. had gone to the house of a Gentile

  102. and eaten with them.

  103. He went to explain

  104. how Cornelius

  105. and his family

  106. had received the Holy Spirit

  107. and came

  108. to put their trust

  109. in the Lord Jesus.

  110. It's the first instance

  111. of Christian faith

  112. breaching Jewish circles.

  113. And so,

  114. in chapter 11,

  115. verse 18,

  116. we have the response

  117. of the leaders

  118. of the church in Jerusalem.

  119. When they heard this,

  120. they had no further objections

  121. and praised God,

  122. saying,

  123. so then,

  124. God has granted

  125. even the Gentiles

  126. repentance unto life.

  127. And so,

  128. this means that

  129. unless you are a Jew,

  130. Antioch,

  131. in the very next verse,

  132. is your mother church.

  133. As the first Gentile church,

  134. my hope is that

  135. something of its heartbeat

  136. might define

  137. something of our heartbeat.

  138. And there are a number of things

  139. you could pull out of here

  140. in this,

  141. but I just want to pick on a few.

  142. A number of the characteristics

  143. of our mother church

  144. that we must commit to

  145. emulating

  146. as we look to the future

  147. at St. Paul's.

  148. Notice,

  149. first of all,

  150. our mother church's commitment

  151. to representing Jesus

  152. where God had placed them.

  153. Verse 19,

  154. Acts 11.

  155. If you haven't got your Bibles,

  156. you need to have your Bibles open.

  157. Or your iPads

  158. or whatever it is you've got.

  159. Acts 11.

  160. Verse 19.

  161. Now,

  162. those who had been scattered

  163. by the persecution

  164. in connection with Stephen

  165. traveled as far as Phoenicia,

  166. Cyprus and Antioch,

  167. telling the message

  168. only to Jews.

  169. Some of them,

  170. however,

  171. men from Cyprus and Cyrene

  172. went to Antioch

  173. and began to speak

  174. to Greeks also,

  175. telling them the good news

  176. about the Lord Jesus.

  177. The Lord's hand was with them

  178. and a great number of people

  179. believed and turned to the Lord.

  180. So chapter 11,

  181. verse 19,

  182. takes us back

  183. to chapter 8,

  184. verse 1,

  185. and the scattering

  186. of the believers

  187. as a result

  188. of the persecution

  189. relating to the martyrdom

  190. of Stephen.

  191. And some of these

  192. persecuted believers

  193. went as far

  194. as Antioch,

  195. the capital

  196. of the Roman province

  197. of Syria

  198. and the third largest city

  199. in the empire.

  200. And as they went,

  201. as they were scattered,

  202. they simply

  203. talked about Jesus.

  204. What was in their hearts

  205. came out of their mouth.

  206. These unnamed Jews

  207. from the island of Cyprus

  208. and Cyrene

  209. with no official direction,

  210. no human instruction,

  211. no precedent to follow,

  212. nothing but a burning

  213. love for Christ

  214. took the good news

  215. of the Lord Jesus

  216. to Antioch.

  217. They were probably

  218. not even aware

  219. that they were doing

  220. something radical,

  221. no clue about their,

  222. the revolutionary

  223. greatness of their act.

  224. They were the first believers

  225. to bring the explosive

  226. light of the gospel

  227. into the pitch black

  228. darkness

  229. of paganism

  230. in Antioch.

  231. Antioch was evangelized

  232. not by apostles,

  233. but by average

  234. members

  235. of the body

  236. of Christ

  237. who just simply

  238. represent Jesus

  239. because Jesus

  240. had pushed them there.

  241. Wherever

  242. these refugees

  243. landed,

  244. Jesus was on display.

  245. Sharing Christ

  246. to them

  247. appears to be

  248. as natural

  249. as tears

  250. to sorrow

  251. and as smiles

  252. to happiness.

  253. Everyday believers

  254. empowered

  255. by the Holy Spirit

  256. blew away

  257. the hold of paganism

  258. on needy souls

  259. and the result

  260. was a great harvest

  261. in Antioch.

  262. Verse 21,

  263. the Lord's hand

  264. was with them

  265. and a great number

  266. of people believed

  267. and turned to the Lord.

  268. We see it again

  269. in verse 24,

  270. a great number

  271. of people

  272. were brought

  273. to the Lord.

  274. Luke is very

  275. careful here

  276. to stress

  277. the sovereign

  278. providence of God

  279. behind the growth

  280. of this church.

  281. It was the Lord's hand,

  282. did you see that?

  283. It was the Lord's hand

  284. that was responsible

  285. for the success.

  286. No apostles,

  287. no parish council,

  288. no ecclesiastical structure,

  289. just the Lord's hand

  290. and a tremendous

  291. number of new believers.

  292. But it doesn't negate

  293. the personal witness

  294. of the disciples

  295. who chose

  296. to accomplish

  297. his sovereign purpose.

  298. This is his appointed means.

  299. Christians

  300. representing Jesus

  301. where he has put them,

  302. wherever that might be.

  303. Now let me say,

  304. there would be

  305. few churches

  306. that would confess

  307. that they have

  308. no interest

  309. in mission.

  310. Many operate

  311. like they have

  312. no interest

  313. in mission,

  314. but there'd be

  315. few who would

  316. confess they have

  317. no interest

  318. in mission.

  319. Most want to be

  320. a light

  321. in a dark place.

  322. Too many,

  323. however,

  324. I fear

  325. operate

  326. like a lighthouse

  327. in a dark place.

  328. Our focus

  329. is illuminating

  330. the far off distances,

  331. but leaving

  332. the area

  333. around our base

  334. plunged in darkness.

  335. no church

  336. will ever

  337. become a missionary

  338. church

  339. unless it

  340. possesses

  341. a vigorous

  342. grassroots

  343. concern

  344. for mission

  345. to the non-Christian

  346. world

  347. where they

  348. are.

  349. This is

  350. our mission

  351. field

  352. right here.

  353. if we are

  354. not concerned

  355. for the good

  356. news of the

  357. Lord Jesus

  358. increasing

  359. and spreading

  360. where God

  361. has put us,

  362. there is no

  363. genuine concern

  364. for gospel

  365. impact

  366. thousands of

  367. kilometers away.

  368. the commitment

  369. to local

  370. mission

  371. for this

  372. church

  373. at Antioch

  374. did in fact

  375. flow over

  376. to the rest

  377. of the world.

  378. Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  379. chapter 13

  380. we see

  381. Barnabas

  382. and Paul

  383. are sent

  384. from Antioch

  385. to the rest

  386. of the world.

  387. Antioch

  388. became the

  389. launching pad

  390. for global

  391. mission.

  392. it was the

  393. base for

  394. Paul's

  395. missionary

  396. journeys

  397. and it

  398. started with

  399. disciples

  400. representing

  401. Jesus

  402. right there

  403. in Antioch.

  404. To represent

  405. Jesus

  406. where he's

  407. put us

  408. in Chatswood

  409. is to keep

  410. in step

  411. with our

  412. mother church.

  413. It is our

  414. heritage,

  415. our bloodline.

  416. Representing

  417. Jesus

  418. as written

  419. into our

  420. mission statement

  421. is one of

  422. the reasons

  423. that we exist

  424. local and

  425. global impact

  426. is one of

  427. our core

  428. values and

  429. mobilizing

  430. members for

  431. local mission

  432. is one of

  433. the five

  434. strategies

  435. that we

  436. are working

  437. on in order

  438. to accomplish

  439. vision 2020.

  440. Our stated

  441. ministry

  442. objective

  443. out there

  444. on the

  445. door

  446. on the

  447. way out

  448. is that

  449. by the

  450. end of

  451. next year

  452. is to

  453. see 500

  454. people

  455. attending

  456. church

  457. each week

  458. here at

  459. St. Paul's.

  460. That's our

  461. mission,

  462. that's our

  463. focus,

  464. that's our

  465. objective.

  466. we are

  467. praying and

  468. laboring to

  469. see people

  470. come to

  471. a saving

  472. faith in

  473. the Lord

  474. Jesus,

  475. not transferring

  476. from another

  477. church,

  478. not interested

  479. in that.

  480. That doesn't

  481. mean I'm not

  482. interested in

  483. you,

  484. if that's

  485. what you've

  486. done,

  487. I'm just

  488. saying our

  489. focus is

  490. to see people

  491. come to

  492. know Christ.

  493. Christ.

  494. praise God

  495. for the

  496. person in

  497. five o'clock

  498. congregation

  499. who responded

  500. to back to

  501. church Sunday

  502. invitation,

  503. went immediately

  504. into Christianity,

  505. explored and gave

  506. their life to

  507. Christ two

  508. Sundays ago,

  509. I think it

  510. was.

  511. Make a

  512. commitment to

  513. pursue this

  514. goal in

  515. 2014,

  516. here today on

  517. Commitment

  518. Sunday.

  519. Notice also

  520. our mother

  521. church's

  522. commitment to

  523. establishing

  524. believers in

  525. the faith.

  526. Again,

  527. this is

  528. something of

  529. our heritage

  530. and our

  531. bloodline that

  532. we want to

  533. emulate today.

  534. In verse

  535. 22 we see

  536. the church in

  537. Jerusalem gets

  538. a wind of

  539. all that's

  540. happening in

  541. Antioch and

  542. so they send

  543. one of its

  544. main men to

  545. check it out.

  546. And Barnabas

  547. likes what he

  548. sees,

  549. verse 23,

  550. when he

  551. arrived and

  552. saw the

  553. evidence of

  554. the grace

  555. of God,

  556. he was glad

  557. and encouraged

  558. them all to

  559. remain true to

  560. the Lord with

  561. all of

  562. their hearts.

  563. You see,

  564. he liked what

  565. he saw,

  566. but his

  567. concern was

  568. to nurture

  569. this young

  570. multicultural

  571. church in

  572. Antioch.

  573. And in

  574. verse 25 we

  575. see he brings

  576. in extra help

  577. to make sure

  578. it happens

  579. effectively.

  580. It says,

  581. then Barnabas

  582. went to

  583. Tarsus to

  584. look for

  585. Saul.

  586. That's about

  587. a 160

  588. kilometer

  589. journey.

  590. And when

  591. he found

  592. him, he

  593. brought him

  594. to Antioch.

  595. And so for

  596. the whole

  597. year, Barnabas

  598. and Saul

  599. met with

  600. the church

  601. and taught

  602. great numbers

  603. of people.

  604. Great numbers

  605. of people were

  606. taught.

  607. And what were

  608. they taught?

  609. Acts 20

    Acts 20:27

  610. verse 27

  611. leads me to

  612. believe that

  613. they were

  614. taught the

  615. whole will

  616. of God.

  617. The emphasis

  618. on establishment

  619. is again seen

  620. in chapter 14

  621. verses 21 to

  622. 23 where the

  623. missionaries are

  624. returning from

  625. the first

  626. missionary journey

  627. and it says

  628. they were

  629. strengthening the

  630. disciples and

  631. encouraging them

  632. and appointing

  633. elders.

  634. I want to

  635. suggest to you

  636. that everything

  637. that this church

  638. is and does

  639. here at

  640. Antioch comes

  641. back to God's

  642. grace and the

  643. fact that they

  644. were well

  645. established in

  646. the truth and

  647. they were

  648. growing in

  649. maturity in

  650. Christ.

  651. People coming

  652. to know

  653. Jesus is not

  654. the only reason

  655. we exist.

  656. We want to

  657. see people grow

  658. into maturity

  659. in Christ and

  660. becoming more

  661. like him.

  662. We want to

  663. see people

  664. standing firm

  665. and secure

  666. in Christ.

  667. Barnabas'

  668. desire for the

  669. church at

  670. Antioch is

  671. for them to

  672. remain true to

  673. the Lord with

  674. all of their

  675. hearts and that

  676. ought to be our

  677. desire as well.

  678. And that's why

  679. our missionary

  680. objective is not

  681. just to have

  682. 500 people

  683. sitting in

  684. church but to

  685. see growth in

  686. core membership

  687. to 150.

  688. As I've said

  689. a number of

  690. times,

  691. core membership

  692. is really

  693. simple and

  694. practical.

  695. It's just a

  696. visible expression

  697. that I as an

  698. individual are

  699. living out what

  700. we value here as

  701. a church.

  702. That's all it

  703. is.

  704. Devotion to

  705. prayer,

  706. Christ-centered

  707. Bible saturation,

  708. humble authenticity,

  709. treasuring Jesus

  710. together,

  711. servant leadership,

  712. radical generosity,

  713. local and global

  714. impact.

  715. commitment.

  716. And so here on

  717. Commitment Sunday

  718. 2013, make a

  719. commitment to

  720. grow in those

  721. core values next

  722. year.

  723. And especially to

  724. grow deeper in

  725. knowing and

  726. treasuring Jesus by

  727. saturating yourself

  728. in the scriptures.

  729. notice too that

  730. there is an

  731. attitude expressed

  732. here in the

  733. Barnabas-Saw

  734. relationship at our

  735. mother church that

  736. would have impacted

  737. the way that this

  738. whole church served

  739. and I believe we

  740. need to follow in

  741. their footsteps here

  742. something of our

  743. bloodline that we

  744. need to emulate.

  745. Barnabas is not an

  746. apostle but he is

  747. one of the main men

  748. in the Jerusalem

  749. church.

  750. Barnabas' goodness

  751. was expressed in

  752. his generosity of

  753. the church in

  754. chapter 4 and

  755. also in him

  756. sticking out his

  757. neck to commend

  758. Paul to the

  759. apostles in

  760. chapter 9.

  761. But here we find

  762. something I think

  763. even more beautiful

  764. than chapter 4 and

  765. chapter 9 because

  766. Barnabas would soon

  767. yield his

  768. preeminence to

  769. Paul.

  770. Barnabas was

  771. older.

  772. Barnabas was

  773. more respected,

  774. more widely known

  775. and in many ways

  776. he was way more

  777. experienced than

  778. Paul.

  779. But when he

  780. asked Paul to

  781. come and help

  782. him in Antioch

  783. in verse 25

  784. and when they

  785. later commenced

  786. their missionary

  787. journey together in

  788. chapter 13,

  789. Paul began to

  790. play a greater

  791. role than

  792. Barnabas.

  793. It begins with

  794. Barnabas and

  795. Saul and

  796. soon it

  797. becomes Paul

  798. and Barnabas

  799. and it

  800. stayed that way

  801. to the end.

  802. Barnabas to

  803. Paul was like

  804. John the

  805. Baptist to

  806. Christ.

  807. He must

  808. become greater,

  809. I must become

  810. less.

  811. And it

  812. wasn't because

  813. Barnabas is like

  814. I'm a little

  815. old now,

  816. it's retirement

  817. time,

  818. need someone to

  819. come and fill the

  820. shoes that I've

  821. been running,

  822. ministries I've

  823. been doing.

  824. What I see

  825. here is an

  826. attitude of

  827. humility and

  828. an attitude of

  829. strategy.

  830. In Acts

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  831. chapter 9 we

  832. read of the

  833. miraculous conversion

  834. of Saul.

  835. God then says

  836. this about

  837. Saul in

  838. verse 15 of

  839. Acts 9,

  840. this man is

  841. my chosen

  842. instrument to

  843. carry my name

  844. before the

  845. Gentiles and

  846. their kings.

  847. And at the

  848. end of

  849. chapter 9,

  850. Barnabas is

  851. the one who

  852. takes Saul to

  853. the apostles and

  854. commends him

  855. for all that

  856. he's been

  857. doing.

  858. And so

  859. Barnabas must

  860. have known that

  861. it was Paul's

  862. calling to be

  863. apostle to the

  864. Gentiles.

  865. And here is

  866. Barnabas now in

  867. Antioch seven,

  868. eight years

  869. later with all

  870. these Gentile

  871. conversions

  872. surrounding him

  873. and he must

  874. have thought

  875. Paul's the

  876. man.

  877. This is

  878. Paul's domain.

  879. This is what

  880. Paul has been

  881. set apart to

  882. do.

  883. And so

  884. Barnabas

  885. puts his

  886. ego to one

  887. side and

  888. allows Paul

  889. to rise up

  890. over him.

  891. all for the

  892. sake of the

  893. word of God

  894. increasing and

  895. spreading.

  896. It is a

  897. glimpse of

  898. genuine

  899. humility and

  900. it's a glimpse

  901. of gospel

  902. strategy and

  903. it's a glimpse

  904. of sacrificial

  905. leadership.

  906. You see

  907. when Paul

  908. and

  909. traveled with

  910. Barnabas to

  911. heathen Antioch

  912. they were the

  913. original dynamic

  914. duo before

  915. Batman and

  916. Robin came into

  917. being.

  918. They

  919. complemented one

  920. another beautifully.

  921. Barnabas

  922. soft,

  923. gentle,

  924. pastoral,

  925. heart,

  926. son of

  927. encouragement,

  928. known for

  929. that.

  930. Paul,

  931. sharp,

  932. legal mind,

  933. argue with

  934. anyone.

  935. They

  936. complemented

  937. one another

  938. beautifully

  939. thanks to

  940. the expert

  941. orchestration

  942. of the

  943. Spirit of

  944. God.

  945. Barnabas

  946. sensitive,

  947. empathetic,

  948. gracious,

  949. Paul had a

  950. brilliant hone,

  951. razor sharp,

  952. lawyer's

  953. intellect and

  954. together the

  955. Spirit of

  956. God worked

  957. together

  958. powerfully

  959. and together

  960. humbly

  961. appreciating one

  962. another,

  963. they were

  964. almost

  965. inconquerable.

  966. And so I

  967. want to

  968. encourage you

  969. as

  970. Commitment

  971. Sunday

  972. 2013,

  973. make a

  974. commitment

  975. to use

  976. your gifts

  977. to serve

  978. the body

  979. of Christ

  980. and to

  981. serve with

  982. this kind

  983. of heart

  984. and this

  985. kind of

  986. strategic

  987. thinking,

  988. a heart

  989. that says

  990. whatever

  991. serves the

  992. advancement of

  993. the gospel

  994. through this

  995. place,

  996. I will do

  997. it even if

  998. it means I

  999. step down.

  1000. Notice also

  1001. our mother

  1002. church's

  1003. commitment to

  1004. generosity,

  1005. again this

  1006. is something

  1007. of our

  1008. heritage and

  1009. our bloodline

  1010. that we

  1011. must emulate

  1012. today.

  1013. Verse 27,

  1014. during this

  1015. time some

  1016. prophets came

  1017. down from

  1018. Jerusalem to

  1019. Antioch,

  1020. one of them

  1021. named Agabus

  1022. stood up and

  1023. through the

  1024. Spirit predicted

  1025. that a severe

  1026. famine would

  1027. spread over the

  1028. entire Roman

  1029. world.

  1030. this happened

  1031. during the

  1032. reign of

  1033. Claudius,

  1034. the disciples

  1035. each according

  1036. to his

  1037. ability decided

  1038. to provide

  1039. help for the

  1040. brothers living

  1041. in Judea and

  1042. this they did

  1043. sending their

  1044. gifts to the

  1045. elders by

  1046. Barnabas and

  1047. Saul.

  1048. Luke's main

  1049. concern here in

  1050. letting us know

  1051. this is not so

  1052. much the

  1053. fulfillment of

  1054. Agabus'

  1055. prophecy as

  1056. with the

  1057. generous response

  1058. of the church

  1059. in Antioch.

  1060. There was a

  1061. need and they

  1062. responded.

  1063. They gave to

  1064. the need each

  1065. according to

  1066. his ability is

  1067. what it says

  1068. there.

  1069. I want to

  1070. suggest to

  1071. you that

  1072. generosity is

  1073. a plain

  1074. biblical principle

  1075. and generosity

  1076. should characterize

  1077. the family of

  1078. God as it did

  1079. right in our

  1080. very beginning

  1081. as a church in

  1082. Acts 2 in the

  1083. way they shared

  1084. with one

  1085. another.

  1086. I was really

  1087. encouraged and

  1088. significantly

  1089. challenged by a

  1090. pastor who

  1091. said recently

  1092. that he and

  1093. his wife made

  1094. a commitment to

  1095. grow in

  1096. generosity every

  1097. year of their

  1098. marriage.

  1099. Every year of

  1100. their marriage.

  1101. And under God

  1102. they made a plan

  1103. to increase the

  1104. percentage of

  1105. what God gave,

  1106. what they gave

  1107. away year by

  1108. year to

  1109. ministry, to

  1110. all sorts of

  1111. other needs.

  1112. And after many,

  1113. many years of

  1114. marriage, they

  1115. are now giving

  1116. away 94% of

  1117. all income that

  1118. comes in.

  1119. Friends, we

  1120. need to see the

  1121. opportunity that God

1122. has given us in the

  1123. wealthy West to

  1124. meet needs and

  1125. demonstrate the

  1126. character of our

  1127. generous God.

  1128. And what we

  1129. are doing here

  1130. today in

  1131. pledging off a

  1132. tree and making

  1133. gifts to see the

  1134. word of God

  1135. increase and

  1136. spread is in

  1137. our heritage.

  1138. Way back,

  1139. way back to our

  1140. origin in Antioch

  1141. in first century.

  1142. Also happens to be

  1143. in our heritage.

  1144. It supports

  1145. Chatswood.

  1146. It says here

  1147. that voluntary

  1148. subscriptions,

  1149. payable any

  1150. time during the

  1151. year to the

  1152. stipend and

  1153. building funds,

  1154. are earnestly

  1155. solicited from

  1156. all those

  1157. desirous of

  1158. assisting in

  1159. the movement.

  1160. That is, the

  1161. movement of

  1162. seeing the

  1163. gospel go to

  1164. Chatswood.

  1165. It is

  1166. decided on

  1167. here that no

  1168. bazaars, sales

  1169. of works or

  1170. morning teas

  1171. be resorted

  1172. to obtain

  1173. funds.

  1174. It is

  1175. hoped that

  1176. every member

  1177. of the

  1178. congregation

  1179. will at

  1180. once notify

  1181. their promise

  1182. of subscriptions.

  1183. Generosity

  1184. is in our

  1185. heritage.

  1186. And so make

  1187. a commitment

  1188. to see the

  1189. word of God

  1190. increase and

  1191. spread and be

  1192. generous in

  1193. 2014.

  1194. Let me just

  1195. take you to

  1196. I think one of

  1197. the most

  1198. wonderful and

  1199. heartwarming and

  1200. almost throwaway

  1201. statements in

  1202. this passage and

  1203. I think it

  1204. serves as an

  1205. overarching statement

  1206. to describe our

  1207. mother church.

  1208. It's found, it's

  1209. almost, it is a

  1210. throwaway line

  1211. almost but

  1212. nothing's ever

  1213. really thrown

  1214. away in the

  1215. word of God.

  1216. It is found at

  1217. the end of

  1218. verse 26.

  1219. The disciples

  1220. were called

  1221. Christians first

  1222. at Antioch.

  1223. In the first

  1224. century Antioch,

  1225. back first

  1226. century, Antioch

  1227. was a melting

  1228. pot of at

  1229. least five

  1230. different cultures.

  1231. People came

  1232. far, to live in

  1233. Antioch, people

  1234. came as far away

  1235. as China to

  1236. live in the

  1237. Las Vegas of

  1238. the Roman Empire.

  1239. It was known

  1240. for two things,

  1241. its chariot

  1242. races and its

  1243. deliberate pursuit

  1244. of pleasure.

  1245. Antioch was

  1246. most famous

  1247. in terms of its

  1248. pursuit of

  1249. pleasure for

  1250. its worship

  1251. of the

  1252. goddess Daphne.

  1253. Apollo's

  1254. famous pursuit

  1255. of Daphne

  1256. was reenacted

  1257. each night

  1258. by the men

  1259. of Antioch

  1260. pursuing

  1261. the Daphne

  1262. temple

  1263. prostitutes.

  1264. Every night.

  1265. And throughout

  1266. the world,

  1267. the morals

  1268. of Daphne

  1269. was a

  1270. euphemism

  1271. for depravity.

  1272. A depravity

  1273. that has its

  1274. centre at

  1275. Antioch, a

  1276. city of

  1277. sensuality and

  1278. depravity.

  1279. And if you've

  1280. been reading the

  1281. local papers

  1282. recently, you'll

  1283. notice that we've

  1284. got a whole lot

  1285. of brothels

  1286. in Chatswood

  1287. and Crowsnest

  1288. and it is

  1289. becoming the

  1290. red light

  1291. district of

  1292. Sydney.

  1293. It's astounding.

  1294. And the

  1295. church at

  1296. Antioch

  1297. was like a

  1298. flower growing

  1299. in a putrid

  1300. bog, a

  1301. patch of

  1302. lush grass

  1303. in a desert,

  1304. a gospel

  1305. vitality now

  1306. burned in

  1307. the sensual,

  1308. depraved,

  1309. materialistic,

  1310. spiritual darkness

  1311. of Antioch.

  1312. Antioch.

  1313. And this

  1314. new church

  1315. which had

  1316. formed in

  1317. Antioch,

  1318. this flower

  1319. in the bog

  1320. was so

  1321. completely

  1322. foreign to

  1323. the bleak

  1324. environment

  1325. that it

  1326. altered the

  1327. vocabulary of

  1328. the city

  1329. and from

  1330. there the

  1331. world.

  1332. When God's

  1333. people live

  1334. for Christ

  1335. in such

  1336. depth and

  1337. power that

  1338. those who

  1339. round them

  1340. have to

  1341. strive for

  1342. a new

  1343. term to

  1344. describe what

  1345. they see,

  1346. that's

  1347. astounding.

  1348. Now perhaps

  1349. there's a

  1350. jesting and a

  1351. mocking edge

  1352. to the

  1353. nickname,

  1354. perhaps there's

  1355. even a little

  1356. bit of rage

  1357. because these

  1358. people were

  1359. such a

  1360. contradiction to

  1361. the ethos of

  1362. Antioch.

  1363. The new

  1364. term which is

  1365. part Greek

  1366. and part

  1367. Latin was a

  1368. mongrel name

  1369. but it

  1370. said it

  1371. all,

  1372. Christian,

  1373. followers

  1374. of Christ.

  1375. Christ was

  1376. so much on

  1377. these believers

  1378. lips,

  1379. they lived

  1380. so like

  1381. Christ that

  1382. no other

  1383. name would

  1384. do.

  1385. Followers

  1386. of Christ.

  1387. Alexander

  1388. the Great

  1389. once learned

  1390. that in

  1391. his army

  1392. was another

  1393. Alexander

  1394. who was a

  1395. notorious

  1396. coward and

  1397. Alexander the

  1398. Great,

  1399. as you would

  1400. hopefully know,

  1401. conquered the

  1402. then known

  1403. world at the

  1404. age of 23.

  1405. He called

  1406. this young

  1407. coward before

  1408. him and he

  1409. said,

  1410. is your name

  1411. Alexander and

  1412. are you named

  1413. after me?

  1414. And the

  1415. trembling coward

  1416. said,

  1417. yes sir,

  1418. my name is

  1419. Alexander and

  1420. yes I was

  1421. named after

  1422. you.

  1423. And the

  1424. Great

  1425. General looked

  1426. at him and

  1427. said,

  1428. then either

  1429. be brave or

  1430. change your

  1431. name.

  1432. Fortunately

  1433. Christ

  1434. doesn't say

  1435. that to us

  1436. but he does

  1437. call us to

  1438. be who we

  1439. are.

  1440. In two

  1441. Sundays,

  1442. it will be

  1443. 112 years

  1444. since our

  1445. first services

  1446. here in

  1447. the mission

  1448. field of

  1449. Chatswood.

  1450. St. Paul's

  1451. was once upon

  1452. a time a

  1453. young,

  1454. newly founded

  1455. North Shore

  1456. Antioch.

  1457. And praise

  1458. God that in

  1459. its 112 years

  1460. there has

  1461. been generosity

  1462. and mission

  1463. orientation and

  1464. servant

  1465. hardness and

  1466. it's been

  1467. disciple making

  1468. church.

  1469. church.

  1470. But we

  1471. also know

  1472. something of

  1473. those things

  1474. have been

  1475. lost or

  1476. not as

  1477. sharply

  1478. focused as

  1479. it could

  1480. have been.

  1481. There were

  1482. more people

  1483. in church

  1484. 112 years

  1485. ago than

  1486. what there

  1487. are here

  1488. today.

  1489. And as

  1490. we launch

  1491. into the

  1492. future,

  1493. my deep

  1494. commitment

  1495. is for us

  1496. to emulate

  1497. our mother

  1498. church's

  1499. vision and

  1500. passion and

  1501. commitment to

  1502. display Christ

  1503. where he has

  1504. placed us.

  1505. Imagine if

  1506. there was

  1507. such a

  1508. Christ-centered

  1509. spiritual dynamic

  1510. operating amongst

  1511. us that it

  1512. caused for

  1513. people to

  1514. reach for

  1515. a new

  1516. name.

  1517. And that

  1518. is what we

  1519. are committing

  1520. to today.

  1521. We are

  1522. simply committing

  1523. to live out

  1524. who we say

  1525. we are.

  1526. We are

  1527. committing to

  1528. be worthy of

  1529. the name

  1530. Christian in

  1531. 2014.

  1532. So let's

  1533. commit together

  1534. to know

  1535. Jesus and

  1536. treasure Jesus

  1537. and represent

  1538. Jesus for

  1539. God's glory

  1540. and the

  1541. joy of

  1542. all people.

  1543. Let's

  1544. pray.

  1545. Let's

  1546. pray.

  1547. Our

  1548. gracious

  1549. Father,

  1550. help us

  1551. to be

  1552. loyal,

  1553. brave,

  1554. committed

  1555. followers of

  1556. Christ who

  1557. refuse to

  1558. turn back,

  1559. who dare to

  1560. stand firm

  1561. and to

  1562. make Christ's

  1563. name known

  1564. to all

  1565. around us,

  1566. who desire

  1567. to shine

  1568. the light of

  1569. the glory

  1570. of Christ

  1571. in the

  1572. dark world

  1573. of Chatswood.

  1574. Enable us

  1575. with your

  1576. spirit,

  1577. by your

  1578. spirit that

  1579. we might

  1580. have such

  1581. confidence and

  1582. joy in

  1583. Christ that

  1584. it might

  1585. overflow into

  1586. a growing

  1587. commitment to

  1588. live out our

  1589. purpose as

  1590. your children.

  1591. and we

  1592. ask that you

  1593. would open

  1594. us to new

  1595. horizons of

  1596. your expansive

  1597. purposes in

  1598. this world.

  1599. Save people

  1600. and build your

  1601. church for

  1602. your glory.

  1603. Amen.
