  1. Leave your Bibles open where Amish just read to us.

  2. And I'm going to pray.

  3. Lord Jesus, as we come to your word

  4. and as we think again about your coming again,

  5. open our hearts to you

  6. and help us to live our lives in the light of your coming

  7. and to see what your coming means for those who are safe in you.

  8. Great joy, great security

  9. and help us to rejoice in what we see in here tonight.

  10. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  11. I had a pretty low day the other day.

  12. I had a moment where I was desperately in need of God's wisdom

  13. and I think also wanting a sense of his nearness and his care.

  14. You know, you hit a low spot,

  15. you almost want to feel God's there as well as know God's there.

  16. And I went to a quiet spot.

  17. In fact, I went up to the foyer at church.

  18. Nobody was around.

  19. And I sat there to pray.

  20. And the best I was able to do was pray,

  21. Lord, please give me wisdom and love.

  22. That was about as big as the prayer got.

  23. I needed God's presence.

  24. I couldn't feel it.

  25. And then I phoned a friend.

  26. And he was wisdom in the flesh for me.

  27. I don't know how I really expected God to answer my prayer,

  28. but I tell you that he did it in a way that was really simple.

  29. He answered it in the person of my friend,

  30. whom I call wisdom personified.

  31. In fact, my wife knows who this man is

  32. because I said to her,

  33. I prayed to God and then I rang wisdom personified

  34. and she knew exactly who I rang.

  35. And in that moment,

  36. I take my friendship with my friend as God's blessing to me.

  37. I was reassured about the presence

  38. and the protection

  39. and the purposes of God in the person of my friend.

  40. Life this side of heaven

  41. is sometimes very difficult.

  42. And I guess when I talk to church family even tonight,

  43. each of us are walking in a different place

  44. and a different moment

  45. and experiencing different things.

  46. So some of us will be sitting here thinking,

  47. it's pretty cool at the moment,

  48. it's pretty great

  49. and it's coming up to Christmas

  50. and I'm going to get all the things I wanted.

  51. And that's for you.

  52. But there may be another one or two amongst us

  53. who are really struggling at the moment

  54. for whatever reason.

  55. And when life is difficult,

  56. I think that's when we really want to pray

  57. the last words of the Bible,

  58. which are,

  59. come Lord Jesus, come.

  60. Come back again, please Lord Jesus

  61. and wrap this whole show up

  62. because it's just not that cool

  63. being here at the moment.

  64. I want to say tonight

  65. that the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

  66. is an essential part of Christian understanding

  67. and it helps us to wait

  68. and make sense of the very imperfect world

  69. which we're living in at the moment.

  70. I'm preaching this short series

  71. on Jesus coming,

  72. the return of the Lord Jesus.

  73. I spoke about it last week

  74. and went to three passages,

  75. a few different passages,

  76. some in John's Gospel,

  77. some in 1 Thessalonians

  78. and some in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  79. And I said that Christians believe

  80. very distinctive things

  81. about life after death.

  82. We believe in the resurrection of all people.

  83. We don't believe in reincarnation.

  84. We don't believe in endless cycles of life.

  85. We don't believe that you can come back

  86. as a flea on a dog's bottom.

  87. And we don't believe in annihilation,

  88. back to dust with no further consequences.

  89. We believe that people cannot escape

  90. the ultimate justice of God

  91. by dying out of this world.

  92. And we believe in the resurrection

  93. to face the judgment of God

  94. and of ultimate accountability.

  95. We believe in the justice of God

  96. which does not allow us

  97. to escape responsibility.

  98. And we believe in the mercy of God

  99. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  100. which allows us to stand safe

  101. at his judgment.

  102. We do not have to fear

  103. the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  104. So Jesus' second coming

  105. from a Bible point of view,

  106. it is certain,

  107. it will be sudden,

  108. it will be seen by all,

  109. it will happen

  110. when his father says it will happen.

  111. Nobody can predict the moment.

  112. So when somebody tries to,

  113. somebody puts a date

  114. on the coming of Jesus,

  115. somebody says you can be slow,

  116. it's not coming yet,

  117. or it's going to happen next year

  118. on such and such a date,

  119. I want you as Christian people,

  120. as my brothers and sisters

  121. to be able to just say

  122. straight out rubbish.

  123. It's nonsense.

  124. Even if it's the most well-meaning

  125. and well-intentioned person.

  126. What do I say to them?

  127. Rubbish.

  128. Because the scripture says otherwise.

  129. All people will be raised

  130. to face the judgment of God.

  131. Jesus' coming will mean

  132. that judgment and destruction

  133. for those people

  134. who have rejected him,

  135. but joy for everyone

  136. who trusts and hopes in him.

  137. So to have your name

  138. written in the Lamb's book of life

  139. means that you will be safe

  140. on the day of his coming.

  141. I'm particularly preaching tonight

  142. about Matthew chapter 25,

    Matthew 25:1–13

  143. verses 1 to 13.

  144. Jesus tells a story

  145. about 10 virgins

  146. waiting to meet a bridegroom

  147. and to escort him

  148. to collect his bride.

  149. That doesn't sound very good,

  150. does it?

  151. I think the virgins

  152. are the bridesmaids

  153. and they're waiting

  154. for the groom to come

  155. and to collect his bride.

  156. I've preached this passage before

  157. and I was going to preach it,

  158. not I haven't preached it here,

  159. I've preached it in another place,

  160. and I was going to preach it

  161. unchanged for the night

  162. and I got it out

  163. and I thought,

  164. oh, this is easy,

  165. easy work of preparation,

  166. I've done this before

  167. and as I started to read

  168. over the work

  169. that I'd done before,

  170. I realised I'd done

  171. a really lousy job last time

  172. and I hadn't understood

  173. the passage properly

  174. and all of a sudden

  175. I had a workload

  176. which I didn't expect

  177. and I want to say to you tonight

  178. that I think I've learnt some things,

  179. I think I've got better

  180. in understanding the passage

  181. but I don't think

  182. I've got it perfect,

  183. so if you're sitting there

  184. reading the passage

  185. while I'm speaking to you tonight

  186. and you see some things in it

  187. and you go,

  188. aha, tell me about it afterwards

  189. because we don't see everything

  190. every time we get up to speak.

  191. You can't understand this passage

  192. without understanding

  193. Matthew chapter 24

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  194. which is immediately before it

  195. and Matthew 24

  196. is a notoriously difficult chapter

  197. of the Bible to understand.

  198. So the people of the first century,

  199. the people that this was written to

  200. were like some of us,

  201. they were living at a time

  202. when God hadn't spoken

  203. for a long time,

  204. maybe 500 years

  205. since one of the prophets

  206. had spoken.

  207. There hadn't been a word of God

  208. for a long time

  209. and there was this growing expectancy

  210. that God was going to turn up

  211. and show his face.

  212. some people were expecting

  213. the coming of the Messiah,

  214. the King

  215. and they associated his coming

  216. with the end of time,

  217. one coming,

  218. one end.

  219. So when the Messiah comes,

  220. that'll be the end,

  221. it's all wrapped up.

  222. We're a bit the same.

  223. We're looking for one more coming

  224. of Jesus

  225. and we associate his coming

  226. when he comes again

  227. with the wrapping up of history

  228. as we know it,

  229. the end of the world,

  230. one more coming,

  231. one end.

  232. Jesus lived in revolutionary times.

  233. You find this out

  234. when you read the New Testament.

  235. People were anticipating a king

  236. who would lead them to glory,

  237. who would reestablish

  238. the kingdom of David

  239. with all its magnificence

  240. for a thousand years before.

  241. A king who would drive

  242. the pagan Romans

  243. out of the land

  244. of God's promise

  245. and there were false Christs

  246. in Jesus' day

  247. who were going to lead

  248. God's people to glory.

  249. You can read about them

  250. in the New Testament.

  251. Two of them are mentioned

  252. in Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  253. They were Jewish revolutionaries.

  254. Their names were Thutis and Judas,

  255. not Judas who was Jesus' disciple

  256. but another Judas.

  257. And both these men

  258. led uprisings

  259. of several hundred men

  260. against the Romans

  261. and these movements collapsed

  262. when their leaders were killed.

  263. So kill the leader,

  264. the movement collapses.

  265. Jesus was executed

  266. in an environment

  267. where he was seen to be

  268. a threat to national security.

  269. He died

  270. and the movement around him

  271. didn't collapse,

  272. it grew.

  273. When Jesus was on trial

  274. before Pilate,

  275. the Jewish leadership

  276. whipped up the crowd

  277. to demand the release of Barabbas.

  278. Set Barabbas free.

  279. Don't set Jesus free.

  280. Set Barabbas free.

  281. We want him.

  282. And Barabbas was

  283. a murderous insurrectionist.

  284. When Jesus was arrested,

  285. Peter drew his sword

  286. straight away,

  287. didn't hesitate

  288. and cut off the ear

  289. of the high priest's servant.

  290. Great stroke.

  291. Magic to see.

  292. Because he was expecting

  293. to have to swing his sword

  294. in following his king,

  295. Jesus.

  296. These were all people

  297. who were expecting

  298. to use weapons

  299. to help God achieve

  300. his purposes.

  301. They had preconceived ideas

  302. about what the coming

  303. of the Messiah

  304. would look like.

  305. And that's why

  306. so many of them

  307. had no idea

  308. that it was even happening

  309. when it was actually happening

  310. because they had

  311. such another idea

  312. in their head

  313. about what would happen.

  314. even Peter.

  315. And what you see here

  316. is that God

  317. is very active

  318. in his work

  319. in a way

  320. that they cannot see

  321. and is not yet understood.

  322. So Matthew 24

  323. begins with Jesus saying,

  324. well, it's all over

  325. for the temple

  326. and it's all over

  327. for Jerusalem.

  328. The disciples

  329. are with Jesus.

  330. They're travelling.

  331. They're marvelling

  332. at the cityscape.

  333. I did it yesterday.

  334. We went,

  335. by the grace

  336. of some of our friends here,

  337. we went and saw

  338. the Messiah

  339. in the Sydney Opera House

  340. yesterday afternoon,

  341. Kerry and I,

  342. with a few of you.

  343. Who else went?

  344. Look at the hands going.

  345. It was the

  346. Foo Club.

  347. The Foo Fan Club

  348. because we were supporting

  349. Chrissie Fulcher

  350. who was singing

  351. in the chorus.

  352. And, you know,

  353. the city skyline

  354. is pretty magnificent,

  355. isn't it?

  356. You can sit on the northern

  357. side of the harbour

  358. and you look across the city,

  359. you see the Opera House,

  360. it's silhouetted

  361. by the bridge down this side

  362. and the high-rise buildings

  363. on the other side

  364. and you can go sometimes,

  365. oh, wow,

  366. isn't it awesome?

  367. And that's what these guys

  368. did outside Jerusalem.

  369. They're travelling

  370. with Jesus,

  371. they're looking back

  372. at Jerusalem,

  373. they're seeing the walls

  374. and the temple

  375. and the other buildings

  376. out there

  377. and they're saying,

  378. it's awesome, Jesus.

  379. And Jesus says,

  380. it's up for demolition.

  381. It's all coming down.

  382. And in AD 67,

  383. the Roman army

  384. came in

  385. and totaled the city.

  386. And 600 years later,

  387. Muslims built a mosque

  388. on the side,

  389. the third holiest shrine

  390. in Islam

  391. and it's been

  392. the most contentious

  393. piece of real estate

  394. in the world

  395. ever since.

  396. A temple

  397. hasn't been rebuilt.

  398. Why wasn't a temple

  399. rebuilt?

  400. Why doesn't a temple

  401. need to be rebuilt?

  402. Help me out.

  403. Help me out.

  404. God is everywhere.

  405. We are the temple

  406. of the living God.

  407. So why do we need

  408. a temple rebuilt

  409. to sacrifice animals

  410. over and over again

  411. to God

  412. in worship of him

  413. when we have had

  414. the one true sacrifice

  415. for sin

  416. that Romans describes

  417. in the person

  418. of the Lord Jesus

  419. step onto the stage

  420. of the world history?

  421. So Christians

  422. who want to bring

  423. a temple back,

  424. we need to be able

  425. to say to them,

  426. rubbish as well.

  427. There's two rubbishes

  428. tonight.

  429. If you go to the chapter

  430. before,

  431. Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  432. Jesus actually brings

  433. the curtain down

  434. on the whole

  435. of the Old Testament.

  436. He says these words,

  437. O Jerusalem,

  438. Jerusalem,

  439. Jerusalem,

  440. the city that kills

  441. the prophets

  442. and stones those

  443. who are sent to it.

  444. how often would I

  445. have gathered

  446. your children together

  447. as a hen gathers

  448. her brood under

  449. her wings

  450. and you would not.

  451. Your house is left

  452. to you desolate

  453. for I tell you,

  454. you will not see me

  455. again until you say,

  456. blessed is he

  457. who comes in the name

  458. of the Lord.

  459. Jesus has told

  460. parables

  461. about the rejection

  462. of God's messengers

  463. and ultimately

  464. God's son

  465. and a new age

  466. is coming

  467. and a new dawn

  468. is about to begin

  469. and so in chapter 24

  470. verse 3,

  471. he sat on the

  472. Mount of Olives,

  473. the disciples

  474. came to him privately

  475. and they said,

  476. tell us,

  477. when will these things

  478. be and what will be

  479. the sign of your coming

  480. and of the close

  481. of the age?

  482. So you get

  483. information here,

  484. you see that Jesus

  485. is alone with his disciples,

  486. he's teaching them privately,

  487. this private teaching

  488. goes on through

  489. the whole of chapter 24

  490. and the whole of chapter 25

  491. and his close friends,

  492. his disciples,

  493. his followers

  494. have got two

  495. really big questions,

  496. when and what?

  497. When will these things

  498. happen?

  499. And what will be

  500. the sign of your coming

  501. and of the close

  502. of the age?

  503. How will we know

  504. that it's about to happen

  505. so that we can see

  506. it coming and be warned?

  507. They have this mindset

  508. that the coming of Jesus

  509. means the close

  510. of the age,

  511. for them the end

  512. of history is upon them

  513. and they want to be

  514. ready for it.

  515. And the first question

  516. has an easy answer,

  517. chapter 24 verse 36,

  518. concerning that,

  519. this is Jesus speaking,

  520. concerning that day

  521. and hour,

  522. no one knows,

  523. not even the angels

  524. of heaven

  525. nor the son

  526. but the father only.

  527. Only the father

  528. of God in heaven

  529. knows when this

  530. is going to happen,

  531. not even me.

  532. And then in verse 44,

  533. therefore you must

  534. be ready

  535. because the son of man

  536. is coming at an hour

  537. when you do not expect.

  538. And so the easy answer

  539. is be ready.

  540. My father is the only

  541. person who knows

  542. the timing,

  543. it will be sudden,

  544. it will be unexpected

  545. and if anybody else

  546. has got a suggestion

  547. about the timing,

  548. just forget it.

  549. They don't know.

  550. But the second question

  551. is much harder.

  552. It's a really good question

  553. but they're asking it

  554. with wrong expectations.

  555. They don't yet understand

  556. that Jesus will come twice.

  557. All the end time expectations

  558. which they're expecting

  559. to happen right now

  560. aren't going to happen

  561. just right now,

  562. they're going to be spread

  563. over time.

  564. Not everything's going

  565. to be completed

  566. with Jesus' first coming.

  567. It's a brand new idea

  568. and it's never been

  569. on their radar before

  570. that Jesus might come once

  571. and then he might come again

  572. or the Messiah,

  573. the King might come once

  574. and then he might come again.

  575. And so Jesus tells them

  576. things about the destruction

  577. of the temple,

  578. many false Christs,

  579. wars, famines,

  580. persecution of believers

  581. to death,

  582. sun, moon and stars

  583. not giving light,

  584. the abomination

  585. of desolation

  586. standing in the temple.

  587. And in verses 34 and 35

  588. he says,

  589. I tell you the truth,

  590. this generation

  591. will certainly not pass away

  592. until all these things

  593. have happened.

  594. And he's saying

  595. that there are events

  596. of cosmic consequence

  597. in the life and times

  598. of the current generation.

  599. You're living in them

  600. at the moment

  601. to the people back there

  602. 2,000 years ago.

  603. They're happening

  604. with this current visit

  605. of God to his world

  606. and in the person

  607. of his son,

  608. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  609. You have to move past Christmas.

  610. Christmas is nothing

  611. compared with what

  612. Christ is about to do.

  613. It's a great time of the year

  614. but in terms of what

  615. Christ is about to do,

  616. it's what he's come to do

  617. and who he is

  618. which is really important.

  619. We move beyond

  620. the baby story

  621. to the glory of Christ

  622. and the kingship

  623. which he's going to exercise

  624. and he's particularly

  625. going to exercise

  626. that cross,

  627. that,

  628. that,

  629. his kingship

  630. on a hill

  631. outside of Jerusalem

  632. when he gives his life

  633. for the sins

  634. of anybody

  635. who would trust in him

  636. and when God vindicates him

  637. by raising him

  638. from the dead.

  639. And the Bible says

  640. that this is a climactic event

  641. with cosmic consequences.

  642. What Jesus is doing

  643. back there

  644. has implications

  645. for the whole of history.

  646. That's how big this event is.

  647. I think when Jesus died

  648. on the cross

  649. that was the abomination

  650. that causes desolation.

  651. There is nothing

  652. that has happened

  653. in the whole of human history

  654. which is as gross

  655. as what happened

  656. to Jesus on the cross.

  657. Because we,

  658. the people that God has made,

  659. even the religious leaders

  660. of his own time,

  661. the people who were supposed

  662. to protect religion

  663. and the temple

  664. and keep it holy

  665. and all those things

  666. seized God himself

  667. with their own hands

  668. and tried to destroy him

  669. as ridiculous

  670. as that is.

  671. That is an abomination.

  672. So Jesus is also preparing them

  673. for an intervening period

  674. and another coming.

  675. In chapter 24,

  676. verses 39 to 44,

  677. he says,

  678. keep watch

  679. because you do not know

  680. on what day

  681. your Lord will come.

  682. But understand this,

  683. if the owner of the house

  684. had known

  685. at what time of night

  686. the thief was coming,

  687. he would have kept watch

  688. and would not have let

  689. his house be broken into.

  690. If the thief had made

  691. an appointment,

  692. the owner of the house

  693. wouldn't have got caught out.

  694. So you also must be ready

  695. because the Son of God

  696. will come at an hour

  697. when you don't expect him.

  698. God's not going to make

  699. an appointment

  700. for you to look forward to.

  701. There will be another coming.

  702. There will be a delay

  703. between the two

  704. and that is where

  705. the story of the wedding

  706. in chapter 25 comes in.

  707. Ten virgins

  708. took their lamps

  709. and they went out

  710. to meet the bridegroom.

  711. Five of them were foolish

  712. and five were wise.

  713. The foolish ones

  714. took their lamps

  715. but did not take

  716. any oil with them.

  717. The wise, however,

  718. took oil in jars

  719. along with their lamps.

  720. Bridegroom was a long time

  721. in coming

  722. and they all became drowsy

  723. and fell asleep.

  724. So Jesus tells this story.

  725. There's a wedding.

  726. No, I can't say

  727. what I want to say.

  728. And you hear nothing

  729. about the bride

  730. in this wedding.

  731. It's bridegroom focused.

  732. It's man-centric.

  733. It's man-centric.

  734. The man spends the money.

  735. The man makes the arrangements.

  736. I'm a dad

  737. and I've got

  738. one married son,

  739. one unmarried son

  740. and I've also got

  741. three unmarried daughters.

  742. So I like this passage

  743. because

  744. I think it's great

  745. for the man's family

  746. to bear the cost

  747. of the marriage

  748. and I think

  749. dowries

  750. are especially

  751. encouraged

  752. and

  753. I know I'm right

  754. because I talked

  755. to my boss this morning

  756. and he totally agrees

  757. with me.

  758. So in Jesus' day,

  759. marriage was like

  760. this three-stage process.

  761. You'd get engaged.

  762. There was engagement,

  763. there was betrothal

  764. and then there was marriage

  765. and the story Jesus tells

  766. is about the third stage

  767. where the bridegroom

  768. returns from his dad's place

  769. to take his bride.

  770. He's been building

  771. and what he's been doing,

  772. he's been at his dad's house

  773. building on an additional room

  774. that he can bring his bride to

  775. to begin their married life together.

  776. So he will come

  777. as soon as the building's completed,

  778. he will come

  779. at that moment

  780. with his entourage

  781. to get his bride

  782. and take her to his house

  783. to consummate the marriage

  784. and to live in their new home.

  785. It's a great moment.

  786. It's a moment

  787. that they've been anticipating

  788. together for some time.

  789. Really interesting,

  790. Jesus uses similar language

  791. and imagery

  792. in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  793. when he said,

  794. in my father's house

  795. are many rooms

  796. and I am going there

  797. to prepare a place for you.

  798. And he also said,

  799. I will come back

  800. and take you to be with me

  801. that you may be where I am.

  802. I'm going away,

  803. there are going to be rooms

  804. for my followers,

  805. I will return

  806. and we will journey

  807. to the place where I am.

  808. So these ten young women

  809. are going to light the way

  810. for the groom

  811. when he arrives

  812. and they will go with him

  813. to the wedding banquet.

  814. Five are described as foolish,

  815. five are wise,

  816. all of them have lamps,

  817. the lamps are not the little thing

  818. they carry around a house,

  819. they're probably long sticks

  820. with a rag on the end

  821. soaked in oil

  822. that creates a blazing light

  823. outside as you travel

  824. through the night.

  825. Five are called wise

  826. because they have jars of oil,

  827. five are called foolish

  828. because they don't.

  829. They all look the same

  830. while they're waiting,

  831. they don't look any different,

  832. there's no difference

  833. except the oil.

  834. The bridegroom's delayed,

  835. he takes a long time,

  836. he doesn't come as quickly

  837. as they had expected him to come,

  838. everybody gets the nods

  839. and they go to sleep.

  840. And it's really interesting

  841. because there's no judgment

  842. in this passage

  843. about them going to sleep,

  844. it's not as though

  845. going to sleep

  846. was a wrong thing

  847. for them to do,

  848. they all go to sleep.

  849. But what Jesus is preparing them for

  850. is a delayed return,

  851. that's a new thought.

  852. It may well be

  853. an unexpectedly long time

  854. into the future

  855. and for people like us

  856. we can see that,

  857. we can look back,

  858. we can say,

  859. well it's been 2,000 years already,

  860. of course it was going to be

  861. a long time into the future.

  862. But it doesn't take faith

  863. for us to see that,

  864. we just look and see.

  865. But we do need faith

  866. to know that Jesus

  867. is still coming.

  868. It was probably

  869. very difficult

  870. for Jesus' disciples

  871. to come to terms

  872. with a slow return

  873. because they just thought

  874. it was going to be imminent.

  875. You know,

  876. this same Jesus

  877. that you've seen

  878. going to heaven,

  879. he's going to return again

  880. in the same way

  881. that you've seen him

  882. going to heaven,

  883. said the angel.

  884. And they thought

  885. it was going to be

  886. in their own lifetime.

  887. But it shouldn't fill us

  888. with a,

  889. or lull us

  890. into a false sense

  891. of security either.

  892. One of,

  893. when I was in

  894. country town

  895. in New South Wales

  896. ministering,

  897. one of my precious

  898. 90 year old ladies

  899. who was full of faith

  900. and she'd walked

  901. through some hard yards

  902. in her life

  903. and God had been

  904. really gracious with her

  905. so I really respected her.

  906. but she said to me

  907. one day,

  908. she said,

  909. I don't think

  910. Jesus will return yet

  911. because I don't think

  912. all the prophecies

  913. have been fulfilled yet.

  914. She was trying

  915. to be scriptural

  916. but she was limiting

  917. God with her theology.

  918. And I lovingly

  919. disagreed

  920. and reminded her

  921. that Jesus teaches us

  922. to be at the ready.

  923. I don't think

  924. I changed her mind

  925. by the way

  926. but we differed

  927. and it was okay.

  928. And when you think

  929. about readiness

  930. I think there's two ways

  931. of understanding

  932. or thinking about readiness.

  933. There's a right way

  934. and there's a wrong way.

  935. So the wrong way

  936. is the story

  937. I told in my message

  938. last week

  939. about the deputy principal

  940. at Frenchess Forest High School

  941. who resigned his job

  942. in 1981

  943. absolutely convinced

  944. that Jesus would return

  945. in 1982.

  946. I'm not sure

  947. what he did

  948. after 1982.

  949. And I was thinking

  950. about this

  951. because I thought

  952. if I knew Jesus

  953. was coming back

  954. in four weeks time

  955. I'm going to stop

  956. putting money

  957. into superannuation

  958. straight away

  959. and I'm going to

  960. start spending it.

  961. I'm not going

  962. to do any work.

  963. I said that to Steve

  964. this morning.

  965. No work.

  966. Sorry Deb.

  967. You have to do it all.

  968. You do it all anyway.

  969. That's probably

  970. what you're going to say.

  971. I'd be with my family

  972. and I'd probably

  973. be pleading

  974. with any members

  975. of my family

  976. to prepare

  977. to meet Christ.

  978. That would be

  979. important for me

  980. just because I know

  981. and love the Lord Jesus.

  982. But if I was

  983. in the country

  984. I wouldn't bother

  985. planting any more crops.

  986. Wouldn't even bother

  987. harvesting them

  988. because there'd be

  989. no one to sell to

  990. in four weeks time.

  991. People who aren't

  992. Christians

  993. I think would go

  994. into a frantic

  995. indulgent panic

  996. if they thought

  997. it was true

  998. if the world

  999. was going to end

  1000. in four weeks time.

  1001. I think you'd

  1002. go and load up

  1003. your credit card

  1004. knowing that you'd

1005. never have any bank fees

  1006. again never have

  1007. to pay it back.

  1008. I think life

  1009. would be turned

  1010. on its head.

  1011. We'd become

  1012. totally irresponsible

  1013. and selfish.

  1014. We'd go out there

  1015. and live and do

  1016. whatever we wanted

  1017. to do without

  1018. regard to the

  1019. consequences.

  1020. The routines

  1021. of life would be

  1022. shot to pieces.

  1023. Nobody would be

  1024. serving one another.

  1025. That's the wrong

  1026. type of readiness

  1027. and when somebody

  1028. preaches to us

  1029. that you've just

1030. got to be ever ready

  1031. as though he's

  1032. going to walk

  1033. in the door

  1034. tonight

  1035. well yes

  1036. that's right

  1037. but no

  1038. in terms of panic.

  1039. So what is

  1040. the right way?

  1041. Well I think you

  1042. see it in the

  1043. remainder of the

  1044. story.

  1045. The moment of

  1046. truth arrives

  1047. verse 6

  1048. at midnight

  1049. the cry rang out

  1050. here's the bridegroom

  1051. come out to meet

  1052. him and all the

  1053. virgins woke

  1054. and they trimmed

  1055. their lamps

  1056. and the bridegroom's

  1057. return catches

  1058. everyone by surprise

  1059. the wise and the

  1060. foolish everybody's

  1061. caught up in the

  1062. surprise of his

  1063. return.

  1064. They all have to

  1065. wake up to meet

  1066. him.

1067. He turns up in the

  1068. dead of the night

  1069. when all the women

  1070. are asleep.

  1071. Everyone needs to

  1072. do the normal

  1073. things including

  1074. sleep so it's all

  1075. right to sleep

1076. but now there is a

  1077. problem because the

  1078. difference between

  1079. the two groups

  1080. becomes immediately

  1081. obvious with the

  1082. coming of the

  1083. groom.

  1084. Some are ready

  1085. to meet him

  1086. and some

  1087. aren't.

  1088. And the

  1089. foolish ones

  1090. in a panic

  1091. say to the

  1092. wives give us

  1093. some of your

  1094. oil our lamps

  1095. are going out.

  1096. No they replied

  1097. there mightn't be

  1098. enough for both

  1099. of us and you

  1100. you get down

  1101. the shop really

  1102. quickly and go to

  1103. the cellars of

  1104. oil wake them

  1105. up and buy

  1106. some for

  1107. yourselves.

  1108. And while they

  1109. were on their

  1110. way to buy

  1111. some oil the

  1112. bridegroom arrived

  1113. the virgins who

  1114. were ready went

  1115. in with him to

  1116. the wedding banquet

  1117. and the door

  1118. was shut.

  1119. it's a hard

  1120. word and if

  1121. you're like me

  1122. you sort of you

  1123. ask all sorts of

  1124. questions when you're

  1125. trying to prepare a

  1126. message and figure out

  1127. what's going on here

  1128. but you know

  1129. couldn't they have

  1130. shared?

  1131. But you've got to

  1132. look beyond the

  1133. parable to see that

  1134. this is a decisive

  1135. moment of truth.

  1136. There just isn't

  1137. enough for everyone.

  1138. It is the moment

  1139. when preparedness

  1140. is going to be

  1141. seen in a final

  1142. and an unchangeable

  1143. way.

  1144. When Jesus

  1145. returns it will

  1146. be too late to

  1147. decide to get

  1148. ready.

  1149. The opportunity

  1150. will be in the

  1151. past.

  1152. You can't rely on

  1153. another person's

  1154. preparedness.

  1155. You might live in

  1156. a family where

  1157. one partner knows

  1158. and loves the

  1159. Lord Jesus Christ

  1160. or maybe your

  1161. mum or your

  1162. dad do and

  1163. they are well

  1164. prepared for the

  1165. return of Christ.

  1166. They know him

  1167. and he knows

  1168. them.

  1169. And they don't

  1170. have to fear the

  1171. day and on that

  1172. day you won't be

  1173. able to say my

  1174. partner did all the

  1175. church going for

  1176. our family.

  1177. Or don't you see

  1178. the fine Christian

  1179. kids that I've

  1180. raised or my

  1181. family goes back

  1182. three or four

  1183. generations,

  1184. believers, we've

  1185. been saying grace

  1186. for the last

  1187. hundred years in

  1188. our family.

  1189. family.

  1190. Or the really

  1191. hard one from a

  1192. parent point of

  1193. view is take my

  1194. faith, take my

1195. oil and give it to

  1196. my children, please

  1197. save them instead of

  1198. me.

  1199. That doesn't work

  1200. either.

  1201. We have to answer

  1202. for ourselves.

  1203. Do we have any

  1204. oil?

  1205. Have we prepared?

  1206. It's about you and

  1207. whether you have

  1208. prepared for that

  1209. day.

1210. Will you go in with

  1211. the groom or will

1212. the door be shut in

  1213. your face?

  1214. And I know as I

  1215. speak tonight that

  1216. there may be some

  1217. people here who

  1218. know that what I'm

  1219. saying about Christ

  1220. and his return is

  1221. true.

  1222. You also know that

  1223. you are unprepared to

  1224. face him.

1225. You may know lots of

  1226. true things about the

  1227. Bible especially

  1228. because you hang

  1229. around churches and

  1230. churches are a great

  1231. place to hang around

  1232. so no discouragement

  1233. of that.

  1234. Even if you don't

  1235. believe this is a

  1236. wonderful place to

  1237. be.

  1238. You may know that

  1239. Jesus died.

  1240. You may know that

  1241. Jesus was raised.

  1242. You may know that

  1243. Jesus is king in

  1244. heaven right now.

  1245. You may know some

  1246. great theology and you

  1247. may have read some

  1248. great Christian books.

  1249. But to know about

  1250. Jesus is different

  1251. from knowing Jesus

  1252. and loving Jesus.

  1253. Need both.

  1254. people who know and

  1255. trust the Lord Jesus

  1256. will be well prepared

1257. to meet him when he

  1258. comes.

1259. We don't have to be

  1260. afraid.

1261. He has prepared us for

  1262. his coming by taking

1263. our sin and nailing it

  1264. to the cross.

  1265. And we have already

  1266. entrusted ourselves to

1267. him in response to what

1268. he has done for us.

1269. We will be safe when he

1270. returns by the grace of

  1271. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1272. Story goes on and

  1273. almost comes to a

  1274. conclusion in verse 11.

  1275. Others came to him.

  1276. Sir, sir, they said,

  1277. open the door.

  1278. The others, the others,

  1279. that's the foolish ones,

1280. came to him and said,

1281. sir, sir, open the door

  1282. for us.

  1283. And he replied,

1284. I tell you the truth,

  1285. I don't know you.

  1286. I don't know you.

  1287. And then Jesus says,

  1288. therefore keep watch

1289. because you do not know

1290. the day or the hour.

  1291. See, the rejection for

  1292. the unprepared is

  1293. dreadfully clear.

  1294. It's too late.

  1295. There is no reversal.

  1296. Rejection is final.

1297. And I think at the very

1298. heart of this story are

1299. the words at the end of

  1300. the story which are,

  1301. I don't know you.

1302. The wise ones are known

1303. by the groom and the

  1304. foolish ones aren't.

  1305. I said this morning,

  1306. nobody invites guests

  1307. to a wedding whom

  1308. they don't know.

1309. Well, one of our mums

  1310. contradicted me,

  1311. but there you go.

  1312. It's the gardener wedding

1313. next week and they've got

  1314. 250 people coming.

  1315. I don't think they know

  1316. them all.

  1317. But take the principle.

  1318. You don't get invited

  1319. if you're not known.

1320. So being ready for Jesus'

  1321. coming does not mean

  1322. frantic panic,

  1323. really important.

  1324. It means knowing the

  1325. Saviour now.

1326. It means being on about

  1327. his business.

1328. I'm going to come to that

  1329. next week.

  1330. Chapter 24,

  1331. verse 44 says,

1332. you must also be ready

1333. because the Son of Man

1334. will come at an hour

1335. when you do not expect

  1336. him.

1337. Who then is the faithful

  1338. and wise servant whom

1339. the Master has put in

1340. charge of the servants in

1341. his household to give them

1342. the food at the proper

  1343. time?

  1344. The Master has given

1345. him a job to do.

  1346. Who's the faithful servant?

1347. It will be good for that

  1348. servant whose Master

  1349. finds him doing what

1350. he's supposed to be doing

  1351. when he returns.

  1352. So when Jesus returns,

1353. people will see what they

1354. are missing out on and

  1355. they will want it.

1356. But it will be too late.

  1357. When Jesus returns,

  1358. there won't be anybody

1359. having a peek at how good

  1360. it is and saying,

  1361. I don't want any of that.

  1362. We'll all want in.

  1363. And those who reject

1364. Christ now face a future

  1365. of grieving what they

  1366. have missed out on.

  1367. But the call throughout

1368. the Bible is to a life

  1369. of faith now.

  1370. Faith which has impact

1371. on how we live now.

1372. Faith which is driving us

1373. to want to know Christ

  1374. now.

1375. Faith which leads us to

  1376. hope in Christ now.

  1377. Faith which is hungry

  1378. for the righteousness

  1379. of Christ now.

  1380. Faith which leads us

1381. to bow our knee to Jesus

1382. and to give way to him

  1383. now.

1384. Faith which puts all our

1385. hope and trust in Jesus

  1386. now.

  1387. It's a verse in Acts,

  1388. isn't it?

1389. Today is the day of

  1390. salvation.

  1391. Knowing the groom now

1392. is what will keep us

  1393. safe then.

1394. So, and that makes us

  1395. safe right now,

  1396. even tonight,

  1397. to pray,

  1398. come Lord Jesus

  1399. come.

1400. And we can only pray

  1401. that safely now

  1402. because we know

1403. that we will be safe

  1404. then.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. that you will take

  1407. who lives

  1408. with Christ.

  1409. You

  1410. father

  1411. and

  1412. how

  1413. you
