  1. If you can keep that passage open in front of you, we're going to get stuck into that.

  2. But first I'm going to pray and ask that God will give us ears to hear.

  3. So let's pray.

  4. Father God, we thank and praise you for your word.

  5. And we thank and praise you for this opportunity tonight to sit and reflect on the life that you have called us to.

  6. Lord, I pray that you would help us to hold loosely to things that might rub against what you're going to teach us.

  7. Give us teachable hearts.

  8. Give us a desire for your will more than for what we know and what's familiar.

  9. And Lord, I pray that by your spirit you would transform us tonight so that we would be more and more the people that you want us to be.

  10. Amen.

  11. I really enjoy this time of year.

  12. That might be hard to believe for those of you who know me.

  13. God's been doing a work in my heart over the past three years.

  14. And I've gone from being the guy that whinges about carols every year round to thoroughly enjoying Christmas Eve and all the singing that goes along.

  15. But I enjoy more than the carols and more than the food and more than the gifts.

  16. I enjoy this bit we're in right now just after Christmas.

  17. It's not the Boxing Day test that I enjoy.

  18. It's the bit coming into New Year.

  19. For some reason, whether you're a New Year's resolution person or not, in this little patch of a couple of days, we all take a moment.

  20. Some of us longer, but we all take a moment just to reflect on the year that's been.

  21. It might even just be that moment before you hit the pillow on New Year's Eve.

  22. But there is just that second of, has this been a good year?

  23. Am I happy with what's happened?

  24. Is there painful memories?

  25. Is there things, maybe opportunities missed?

  26. And maybe how will it be different in the next 12 months?

  27. It's just this unwritten rule that at this time of year, you think about what has gone before and what will come next.

  28. But I want to push you a little bit further today.

  29. And I want to ask you the question, how do you actually measure whether or not you've had a good year?

  30. And what grid do you use when you're trying to plan the year that's ahead?

  31. Today and for the next three weeks, we're going to do a highlights tour of the Sermon on the Mount.

  32. It really is a highlight.

  33. We're only going to get to a couple of small bits.

  34. But here, Jesus is preaching to his disciples.

  35. And he begins in chapter 5, in the bit that Tim read out for us, by, I think, redefining what success looks like in life.

  36. Because we do have things that we go to.

  37. We have measures, if you like.

  38. We have a grid that we use.

  39. But tonight, I think, and in this passage, Jesus wants to reshape that grid.

  40. He wants to redefine what it looks like to be blessed.

  41. He wants to redefine what it looks like to be successful in life.

  42. And so whatever ideas you have, and we do have them, we need to loosen our grip a little bit.

  43. There's the stereotypical picture of blessing.

  44. It's the nice house, the nice car, lots of money, the job you want, that sort of thing.

  45. But maybe you have a more noble version of what a good life would be.

  46. Maybe your noble version is something like a good family, your health, enough money but not too much,

  47. some friends, some hobbies you like to do.

  48. It sounds like not a bad thing to aim for, but I wonder, how closely does that line up with what Jesus gives us?

  49. How close do those two examples go to this list?

  50. Poor in spirit.

  51. Mourning.

  52. Meek.

  53. Hunger and thirsting for righteousness.

  54. Merciful.

  55. Pure in heart.

  56. Peacemaker.

  57. Persecuted.

  58. Now before we jump into that list and unpack it a bit more, I want to give you a challenge.

  59. There's a lot in there and we're not going to get to pull it all apart tonight.

  60. So I want to give you a challenge between now and New Year's Eve to actually open your Bible up again

  61. and have a look at each of these things and maybe think about where you are on those things in life.

  62. But we are going to get stuck in tonight and see what God has to teach us,

  63. but let me give you that challenge and the acknowledgement that there's more in there

  64. than we can squeeze out in the next little while.

  65. So let's look at this list that Jesus has given us.

  66. First off, in verse 3.

  67. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  68. So Jesus opens his definition.

  69. So this is less like a list as kind of a description, an ongoing kind of explanation of what the blessed life looks like.

  70. And he opens it with three connected ideas.

  71. You've got the poor in spirit, those who mourn, and the meek.

  72. And I think that what Jesus is pushing us to recognize is that those who live the blessed life

  73. have to live with their eyes open when it comes to seeing themselves.

  74. What I mean is when he describes the poor in spirit, he's not just saying that they're lacking something.

  75. They're aware that they're lacking something.

  76. The blessing is the fact that they know they have a poverty of spirit.

  77. They know that they are not the people that God has designed them to be.

  78. They know that they are not the people they need to be if they would know God and know his goodness and his love.

  79. And so they recognize that they are unworthy of him.

  80. So necessary to being poor in spirit is at least a little bit of honest reflection.

  81. Looking at your own life and thinking, what have I done today?

  82. What have I done this week?

  83. What have I done this year that is dishonoring to God?

  84. And it probably also requires at least some measure of honest and specific and regular confession of whatever it is that you discover.

  85. The second one I think is connected.

  86. Verse 4.

  87. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

  88. This isn't the Jesus endorsement for being emo.

  89. This isn't an affirmation for Christians who look sad all the time.

  90. That may be reality for some people, but that's not what Jesus is encouraging here.

  91. The mourning he wants is a mourning for sin.

  92. He wants us to be offended by the things that offend him.

  93. But the reality is that for most of us, we're not.

  94. We've progressively become more and more comfortable with things that should be disgusting, with things that should be offensive.

  95. I remember a couple of years ago, my grandpa gave me a jumper, just a plain grey jumper that he bought and didn't fit him.

  96. It was just simple.

  97. Sleeves, no neck.

  98. It was a jumper.

  99. Nothing too exciting.

  100. And one time, I decided that would be an appropriate jumper to wear while I was doing some painting.

  101. The result was I ended up with paint on this jumper.

  102. And my wife, being the fantastic domestic goddess that she is, washed the jumper and got 99.9% of the paint out of the jumper.

  103. There was just the smallest little splash of white paint on it.

  104. And I pulled the jumper out of the cupboard a little while later and I was wearing it again and she was mortified that there was still paint on the jumper.

  105. She wanted me to take it off so she could wash it or soak it.

  106. And then she wanted to try and scratch the paint off.

  107. Now, I insisted that that paint was my fashion paint, that that had transformed a boring Lowe's jumper into being the must-have item on this winter's fashion list.

  108. And I don't know why.

  109. But anyway, I just insisted that she couldn't scratch it off, she couldn't wash it, she couldn't do anything.

  110. And sure enough, after enough time of seeing it, she just let it go.

  111. It wasn't an issue anymore.

  112. She just got comfortable with the fact that the paint belonged on the jumper, that in fact, it was now genuinely a fashion jumper.

  113. And the issue is that as something is there, even if it doesn't belong, the longer it's there, the more comfortable we get with it.

  114. We get desensitized to the fact that it shouldn't be there.

  115. And that's the reality with sin in our life.

  116. Something that was maybe once disgusting and abhorrent is now just part of who we are.

  117. Yeah, hey, I'm not perfect.

  118. But Jesus is calling us to see what God sees.

  119. To see that when we sin, we actually reject God.

  120. We actually deny His kingship and His right to rule over our lives.

  121. And we need to see what He sees.

  122. Sin costs Jesus' life.

  123. The sin in our lives should be something that drives us to mourn its existence.

  124. And to desire the day when we will be washed clean and it will be completely removed.

  125. And the third one, which I think still is in this idea of having our eyes open, is verse 5.

  126. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

  127. The meek are not the weak.

  128. God is not calling you to get picked on.

  129. And the word meek means strength controlled.

  130. Jesus is our model for meekness.

  131. The all-powerful creator and lord and ruler and judge who chose to allow sinful, rebellious, pathetic creation to murder Him on the cross.

  132. Meekness is not weakness.

  133. It's strength controlled.

  134. And essential to meekness is a right view of ourselves.

  135. When we recognize our inadequacy.

  136. When we recognize our sin.

  137. When we recognize that there is nothing in us that makes us acceptable to God.

  138. Meekness is the only response.

  139. No longer does it feel right to fight for what we think we deserve.

  140. Because when you recognize your poverty of spirit.

  141. When you mourn your own sin.

  142. You understand that you deserve nothing.

  143. But God has been gracious to you anyway.

  144. I think that this description starts to shift a little bit more into the actions that come out of that right seeing of ourselves.

  145. And so in verse 4, sorry, in verse 6 it says,

  146. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  147. I want to introduce you to a word tonight.

  148. This is a word which some of you may have heard before.

  149. But it's something that I only discovered earlier in the year that my wife uses to describe me and my son.

  150. It's the word hangry.

  151. I don't know if you've come across it before.

  152. It's the word that describes the state that Bailey and I go into at the point of hunger.

  153. We become quite aggressive.

  154. It doesn't matter how nice or friendly we are.

  155. Before that, at the moment where we want food, that is all consuming.

  156. I don't care that you're my wife and I promise to love you unconditionally.

  157. Where is my dinner?

  158. I'm exaggerating just so we're clear.

  159. Sally doesn't have to pull up with any of that.

  160. But it's that moment where you get consumed and all you can do is try and get food.

  161. All these other apparently important things kind of fade away.

  162. And when Jesus calls us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, he's talking about that consuming desire.

  163. That need in us that must be met.

  164. Not just a passing interest in living a life that honors God.

  165. Not just something that you do occasionally or socially.

  166. But that moment where your stomach hurts with desire for food to be in it.

  167. That moment where it is so hot and you are so thirsty and you would give anything for a drop of water.

  168. That desire, that drive is what we are called to if we're going to live this life that Jesus is describing.

  169. In verse 7 he says,

  170. Mercy costs us.

  171. We prefer justice when we've been wrong but we are called to show mercy just as we have been shown mercy.

  172. Verse 8,

  173. As Jesus is going through and this description is growing of this life that we are called to,

  174. this one is really important.

  175. Because you could take away this list and start mourning a lot.

  176. Start crying so that everyone can see.

  177. Come to church with your head in your hands every Sunday morning.

  178. Every time you talk to someone let them know how sad you are because of your sin.

  179. You could begin being the meekest person possible.

  180. You could begin never insisting on your own way.

  181. You could begin putting other people's needs first all the time.

  182. You could let everyone know how hangry you are for righteousness.

  183. You could be as merciful as possible but deep down you could just be putting on a show.

  184. The message of this whole sermon and we'll see it come out over the next couple of weeks

  185. is that while these actions matter,

  186. they only count if they are the overflow of your heart.

  187. The pure heart that Jesus is talking about is the heart that is undivided in its commitment and desire for God.

  188. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus goes on to say in verse 33,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  189. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.

  190. It says don't be distracted by putting on a show.

  191. Don't be distracted by apparent needs and other things in your life.

  192. Seek God with everything.

  193. And the pure heart that Jesus is describing here is the heart that wants to honour God,

  194. wants to honour Jesus as King more than anything else.

  195. Number 7 in verse 9, it says,

  196. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God.

  197. Now, just to clarify, it doesn't say blessed are the peacelikers.

  198. Blessed are the people who wear the shirts that say make love not war.

  199. It's blessed are the peacemakers.

  200. Blessed are the people who pursue peace.

  201. And not just who rally at anti-war protests,

  202. but in your home when there's a fight.

  203. Are you the one who pursues peace?

  204. Are you the one who seeks to settle tension?

  205. Who seeks to listen impartially?

  206. Who seeks to let go of your own prejudice?

  207. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God.

  208. And finally,

  209. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

  210. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  211. Not persecuted for being annoying.

  212. Not persecuted for being the judgmental Christian

  213. who knows how to let everybody else know when they're doing the wrong thing.

  214. Not persecuted for letting everybody else know how much better than them you are.

  215. But persecuted for righteousness.

  216. Now, this one rubs, I think, the most.

  217. It's really easy to read this and go, yeah, blessed are the persecuted.

  218. But just let that sit in your mind for a second.

  219. Persecution.

  220. A blessing.

  221. How is that possible?

  222. As you pray for the next 12 months,

  223. are you going to ask God for persecution?

  224. Because apparently, that's part of this blessed life.

  225. That's part of what success in life looks like, according to Jesus.

  226. So how does that work?

  227. The best way that I can understand it is,

  228. it's like paintball.

  229. I don't know if you've ever played paintball before.

  230. If you haven't, basically,

  231. there's a bunch of people running around in, like,

  232. camouflage suits with high-powered,

  233. air-pressured guns and little paint pellets,

  234. which leave some nasty bruises and welts on you.

  235. Now, it might sound counterintuitive,

  236. but if you come out of a game of paintball without any marks on you,

  237. that's not actually winning.

  238. You might think you've won,

  239. but everybody else will look at you as the person who hid

  240. and didn't get involved in the game,

  241. didn't actually engage in what was going on.

  242. Success at paintball is maybe a few less bruises than everyone else,

  243. but you need the war wounds.

  244. That's what says you were in there.

  245. Those welts say you were in the game,

  246. you were taking shots,

  247. you were taking risks,

  248. you were a part of it.

  249. And in the same way,

  250. persecution is the badge of honour

  251. for the Christian who seeks to honour God with their life.

  252. Now, it's not an instruction to go looking for persecution.

  253. Go and find the angriest non-Christian you can

  254. and just hover around them until they hit you.

  255. The reality is, if you seek God, it's offensive.

  256. If you continue to do what you know is right,

  257. it will rub against the world around you.

  258. If you continue to refuse to cheat on your tax,

  259. if you continue to refuse to be dishonest at work,

  260. even if it's beneficial for your whole department,

  261. you may find you miss out on a promotion.

  262. You may find your work colleagues or your school friends

  263. don't want to hang out with you anymore.

  264. You may find it's even harsher than that.

  265. They start talking about you.

  266. They start ridiculing you.

  267. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness.

  268. Verse 12,

  269. When you seek God with all your heart, persecution will result.

  270. And maybe we need to ask ourselves a question

  271. as we come to this time of reflection and looking at the new year.

  272. If we have not faced persecution for our righteousness this year,

  273. has there been righteousness?

  274. Has there been an obvious love for Jesus

  275. that the world around us could see?

  276. Now I say that gently because again,

  277. Jesus isn't instructing us to go looking for persecution.

  278. But he is saying that where there's righteousness,

  279. there'll be persecution.

  280. He says it in John 15.

  281. He says it all through the New Testament.

  282. And if I'm honest with you,

  283. as I reflected on these things this week,

  284. I struggled to think of a time

  285. where I have been persecuted for my righteousness.

  286. And so maybe I need to ask God

  287. to help me to seek Him with a greater focus

  288. and a more significant purity of heart

  289. so that the world might see that He is my King.

  290. This is the blessed life.

  291. Poverty of spirit,

  292. mourning,

  293. meekness,

  294. a hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  295. merciful,

  296. pure in heart,

  297. peacemaker,

  298. and persecuted.

  299. That's what life in the Kingdom of God looks like.

  300. And that is the opposite of everything

  301. that we described at the beginning.

  302. And if we're honest,

  303. that's the opposite of most of the things

  304. that we want in the next 12 months.

  305. If you're the kind of person who plans and set goals,

  306. I'm not sure that these are the things

  307. that would have rated high on your list.

  308. But this is the grid that Jesus gives us.

  309. This is the ruler.

  310. This is the measure of what success looks like.

  311. And Jesus is redefining our worldview.

  312. He's redefining what matters.

  313. He's resetting what the goal is.

  314. And so as we dream and we plan for what is to come,

  315. as we reflect on the year that has just passed,

  316. I want to show you two key things

  317. that I think will help us unlock this blessed life.

  318. The first one.

  319. Real success is not something that you achieve.

  320. It's something you receive.

  321. Say that again.

  322. Real success in your life

  323. is not something that you earn,

  324. that you sweat and toil for.

  325. It's something that you receive helplessly.

  326. When I was growing up,

  327. I still have,

  328. but I'm one of three brothers in my family.

  329. There's also girls,

  330. but I'm a middle child.

  331. I've got an older brother and a younger brother.

  332. And for some reason,

  333. God in His providence decided

  334. that I should be the least coordinated.

  335. And this was fairly costly growing up

  336. because what do boys do?

  337. They beat each other up.

  338. They play sport.

  339. And when one of your brothers

  340. is five years younger than you

  341. and better than you at everything,

  342. it's not great for the self-esteem.

  343. But I remember one instance in particular

  344. when we lived in the hills,

  345. which is about half an hour away from here,

  346. and it was really, really hot.

  347. It was one of those days at school

  348. where the rumours,

  349. which I'm not sure are true,

  350. start spreading

  351. that if it gets one or two degrees hotter,

  352. school's going to stop.

  353. It's going through the playground

  354. and you're praying

  355. that it will just peak at that,

  356. I don't know what the magical mark was.

  357. I think 42 was the figure

  358. I remember from school,

  359. although I'm pretty sure

  360. we had days hotter than that.

  361. It was one of those days

  362. and it was so hot,

  363. you're not actually working in class

  364. because you can't focus.

  365. Everyone's mucking around.

  366. And my brother heard a rumour

  367. from a friend of his

  368. about a new housing estate

  369. with a water reservoir in the middle.

  370. Now, I don't mean a dam,

  371. I mean the drinking water

  372. in those big,

  373. you know,

  374. kind of looks like a big oversized tin can.

  375. And they heard

  376. that somebody had cut the chains

  377. and you could go swimming in there.

  378. So, after school,

  379. we all jumped in the car

  380. with my brother,

  381. me, my little brother,

  382. my older brother,

  383. and his friend,

  384. and we drove to this water reservoir.

  385. Now, the way they keep people

  386. out of water reservoirs

  387. is they put a big

  388. eight-foot fence

  389. around the bottom of the ladder

  390. that goes to the top

  391. where you would go in.

  392. Well, that's one of the ways.

  393. And we got there

  394. and I looked at it and thought,

  395. ooh, that's going to be a hassle.

  396. And as I looked

  397. and began to process the obstacle,

  398. my brother ran past me,

  399. jumped up,

  400. grabbed the top,

  401. levered himself over

  402. and jumped onto the ladder

  403. and went up.

  404. My little brother did the same.

  405. My brother's friend did the same.

  406. I thought, okay.

  407. So I jumped up

  408. and grabbed the edge

  409. and I started to pull myself up.

  410. I got to about here,

  411. rested my chin on the top,

  412. and then I lost it

  413. and I dropped off.

  414. And I kind of stood back

  415. for a second,

  416. caught my breath.

  417. I was carrying a bit of extra weight

  418. and I thought,

  419. what can I put?

  420. There's nothing around to stand on.

  421. So I took a running jump

  422. and I run and kind of,

  423. you know how you see in the movies,

  424. they step on a wall

  425. and it's like magical.

  426. And I did that

  427. and my foot hit the wall

  428. and then I fell.

  429. I'm looking around

  430. and my brothers,

  431. including my five-year younger brother,

  432. halfway up the ladder

  433. looking down at me in hysterics.

  434. They think this is

  435. the funniest thing ever.

  436. And I'm jumping again,

  437. I'm trying over and over,

  438. I'm trying everything I can.

  439. I'm trying to psych myself up for it.

  440. My brother's telling me

  441. it's all in my head

  442. but actually it was probably

  443. to do with a lack of bicep.

  444. And I keep trying,

  445. keep trying,

  446. keep trying

  447. and eventually,

  448. after my brother's been

  449. swimming in the pool

  450. for a little while

  451. and they're sick

  452. of watching and laughing at me,

  453. he comes down

  454. and he offers me his hand

  455. to help me get over.

  456. Now, I couldn't accept.

  457. I mean,

  458. it would have been admitting defeat.

  459. My little brother

  460. who was like 11 at the time

  461. had managed to chin up himself

  462. and get over the fence.

  463. I thought,

  464. no, no, it's okay,

  465. you keep swimming,

  466. I'll be in in a second.

  467. And I'm getting hotter

  468. and hotter at this point.

  469. Remember,

  470. it's 42 degrees

  471. and I have another couple

  472. of cracks at it

  473. and then eventually

  474. I realize I can't.

  475. No matter how much I try,

  476. I'm not going to get stronger

  477. or taller

  478. or able to jump more

  479. in the next 20 minutes,

  480. half an hour,

  481. three days,

  482. five years.

  483. I'm stuck with the body

  484. God's given me

  485. and so eventually

  486. I had to shout out

  487. and my brother came down,

  488. gave me an arm over

  489. and I got to swim

  490. for about five minutes

  491. because they were already over it.

  492. But until I was willing

  493. to put my hand up

  494. and accept help,

  495. I was in a position

  496. where I could not do

  497. what I needed to do.

  498. The reality of our life

  499. is that you are like me

  500. trying to jump that fence.

  501. Regardless of how successful

  502. you might think you are,

  503. regardless of the capacity

  504. that you think you have

  505. to achieve things

  506. or gain things for yourself,

  507. to get into this life

  508. that Jesus is describing here,

  509. to experience the favour

  510. that God has for you,

  511. the design He has for your life,

  512. you need help.

  513. You need to put your hand up.

  514. It's there in the very first thing

  515. that Jesus says.

  516. As He begins to describe this life,

  517. He says,

  518. blessed are the poor in spirit.

  519. The starting point for this life

  520. is recognising

  521. that you're not good enough for it.

  522. Recognising that you need Jesus

  523. and then finding the answer

  524. in His life.

  525. Your inadequacy is surpassed

  526. by His perfect obedience to God.

  527. He embodies so much of this list.

  528. He is the example of meekness.

  529. He pursued righteousness

  530. and got it.

  531. He was and is merciful.

  532. He loved His heavenly Father

  533. with purity of heart.

  534. He brought peace on the earth

  535. and He was persecuted

  536. for His righteousness.

  537. We need to begin

  538. by recognising our inadequacy,

  539. asking for help

  540. and finding the answer

  541. in Jesus.

  542. In His death

  543. and in His resurrection,

  544. those who are not good enough,

  545. those who don't deserve it,

  546. those who are poor in spirit,

  547. find forgiveness

  548. and blessing

  549. and hope

  550. and love.

  551. They find comfort.

  552. They inherit the earth.

  553. They will be filled

  554. with righteousness.

  555. They are shown mercy.

  556. They will see God.

  557. They will be called sons of God

  558. and theirs is the kingdom

  559. of heaven.

  560. Real success in life

  561. is not something

  562. you toil for.

  563. It's something

  564. that you receive

  565. in Jesus

  566. from your heavenly Father.

  567. The second thing

  568. that I think helps us

  569. unlock this life

  570. that is described here

  571. and take it in our own context

  572. is that real success

  573. in life

  574. is a journey.

  575. I want to take you back

  576. a few years

  577. to June 29,

  578. 2007.

  579. It is a significant date

  580. in the history

  581. of the world.

  582. I'm fairly confident

  583. that none of you

  584. will know why.

  585. When I tell you,

  586. you will remember it

  587. as significant

  588. but technology

  589. has moved very quickly

  590. at different points

  591. in our history.

  592. There's been key points

  593. where it's jumped,

  594. other points

  595. where it's been

  596. a bit static.

  597. June 29,

  598. 2007

  599. was the release

  600. of the first

  601. iPhone.

  602. Now,

  603. I know it's a stretch

  604. for some of us

  605. in this room

  606. but I need you

  607. to think back

  608. to the pre-iPhone days

  609. or maybe if you're

  610. really good,

  611. the pre-smartphone days.

  612. The reason I picked

  613. the iPhone is

  614. because the smartphones

  615. before the iPhone

  616. were about as big

  617. as this stand.

  618. I remember having

  619. a 3-1 with the network

  620. and one of my housemates

  621. used to make fun of me

  622. by pretending

  623. to answer the phone

  624. by picking up a mattress.

  625. So,

  626. that doesn't really count,

  627. I don't think.

  628. There's nothing smart

  629. about carrying around

  630. a mattress

  631. to make phone calls.

  632. But think back

  633. to the pre-iPhone days

  634. to the Nokia 5110

  635. which was apparently

  636. the only phone

  637. in the world.

  638. The Nokia 5110

  639. was the phone

  640. that enabled you

  641. to play Snake

  642. instead of doing maths.

  643. Now,

  644. on the iPhone

  645. you can download files,

  646. you can send emails,

  647. you can video chat

  648. to people

  649. on the other side

  650. of the world.

  651. But the iPhone

  652. that was released

  653. on June 29,

  654. 2007

  655. would be a really

  656. annoying phone

  657. to have right now.

  658. It would be slow,

  659. it would be inadequate,

  660. it would be frustrating,

  661. it wouldn't be able

  662. to do things

  663. that your new iPhone

  664. can do,

  665. the camera would only

  666. have like 5 megapixels.

  667. Real success

  668. is a journey.

  669. When we place

  670. our trust

  671. in Jesus

  672. and in what

  673. he's done

  674. on the cross,

  675. it brings

  676. radical change

  677. in our life.

  678. The Bible

  679. describes us

  680. as going

  681. from darkness

  682. to light,

  683. from death

  684. to life,

  685. but it also

  686. begins a slow

  687. process of change

  688. in us.

  689. At the risk

  690. of stretching

  691. the metaphor,

  692. Jesus' arrival

  693. and his death

  694. and resurrection

  695. are like the release

  696. of the first iPhone.

  697. As we await

  698. the perfected iPhone,

  699. which I assume

  700. will be in heaven

  701. when Steve Jobs

  702. is back on the job,

  703. we also await

  704. the return of Jesus

  705. when this life

  706. that is described

  707. here will be

  708. fully realised.

  709. We are called

  710. as Christians

  711. to have a contentment

  712. and a joy

  713. in what God

  714. has given us now,

  715. but at the same time

  716. to be discontent,

  717. to have a yearning

  718. for the more

  719. that God

  720. has prepared

  721. for us.

  722. The kingdom

  723. has begun

  724. because Jesus

  725. has died,

  726. Jesus has risen

  727. and Jesus

  728. has ascended

  729. to the throne

  730. in heaven,

  731. but the kingdom

  732. will only fully

  733. be realised

  734. when Jesus returns.

  735. That is why

  736. Jesus can say,

  737. blessed are those

  738. who are persecuted

  739. because they know

  740. that though they face

  741. persecution now,

  742. they will live

  743. forever

  744. and there will come

  745. a time when God

  746. will wipe away

  747. every tear

  748. from their eye

  749. where there will be

  750. no more pain,

  751. no more suffering.

  752. Paul describes

  753. the Christian life

  754. as joyful

  755. yet sorrowing

  756. and I believe

  757. the message

  758. from Jesus

  759. in this description

  760. of the blessed life

  761. is that we must

  762. look forward

  763. to heaven

  764. when we will

  765. know true

  766. comfort,

  767. when we will

  768. inherit the earth,

  769. when we will

  770. be filled

  771. with righteousness,

  772. when we will

  773. be shown mercy

  774. eternally,

  775. when we will

  776. see God

  777. face to face,

  778. when we will be

  779. called sons of God,

  780. when we will

  781. enjoy the kingdom

  782. of heaven

  783. in all its glory.

  784. But I also

  785. think the message

  786. is rejoice now.

  787. Because Jesus

  788. has died,

  789. because Jesus

  790. has risen,

  791. the mourning

  792. we have over sin

  793. has a comfort

  794. because there is

  795. hope.

  796. Because Jesus

  797. is alive

  798. and because

  799. we can be

  800. forgiven,

  801. we know that

  802. he has begun

  803. the process

  804. of making us

  805. righteous,

  806. we know that

  807. when he returns

  808. we will be

  809. filled with

  810. righteousness.

  811. In Jesus

  812. we have been

  813. shown mercy.

  814. Because of

  815. Jesus we know

  816. that we will

  817. get to see

  818. God.

  819. Because of

  820. Jesus we too

  821. get to be

  822. called sons

  823. of God

  824. and because

  825. of Jesus

  826. ours is

  827. the kingdom

  828. of heaven.

  829. Success

  830. success in

  831. life.

  832. The blessed

  833. life is a

  834. life modelled

  835. on Jesus'

  836. example.

  837. But more

  838. than that.

  839. It's a life

  840. that's only

  841. possible because

  842. of what Jesus

  843. has done on

  844. the cross.

  845. And finally

  846. it's the life

  847. that wants

  848. more than

  849. anything

  850. for Jesus

  851. to be honoured

  852. as the king

  853. that he is.

  854. That is God's

  855. end point for

  856. his creation.

  857. Jesus as king

  858. over all

  859. and the

  860. blessed life

  861. anticipates

  862. that perfect

  863. final day.

  864. Let's pray.

  865. Father God

  866. we want to

  867. acknowledge that

  868. there are so

  869. many things

  870. that we chase

  871. after.

  872. So many things

  873. that distract

  874. us from the

  875. life that you

  876. have won for

  877. us.

  878. Father we ask

  879. that as we

  880. reflect on the

  881. year that has

  882. passed, as we

  883. look at the

  884. year that's to

  885. come and as we

  886. look at the rest

  887. of our lives,

  888. Lord may we

  889. be consumed

  890. with the

  891. things that

  892. you desire.

  893. Enable us

  894. to treasure

  895. Jesus as he

  896. deserves, to

  897. serve him and

  898. honour him as

  899. our king, to

  900. seek his glory

  901. above our own,

  902. to recognise the

  903. things in this

  904. world that are

  905. offensive and

  906. dishonouring to

  907. him.

  908. Give us a

  909. yearning for

  910. heaven.

  911. Help us to

  912. live every day

  913. now in

  914. preparation for

  915. that day.

  916. Help us to

  917. live every day

  918. now recognising

  919. Jesus' full and

  920. complete kingship.

  921. And Father make

  922. us a light that

  923. shines the hope

  924. that we have,

  925. that shines the

  926. majesty and glory

  927. of Jesus into a

  928. world that is

  929. dark and lost

  930. and desperate

  931. for this blessed

  932. life.

  933. Amen.

  934. Amen.

  935. Amen.

  936. Amen.

  937. Amen.

  938. Amen.

  939. Amen.

  940. Amen.

  941. Amen.

  942. Amen.

  943. Amen.

  944. Amen.

  945. Amen.

  946. Amen.

  947. Amen.

  948. Amen.

  949. Amen.

  950. Amen.

  951. Amen.

  952. Amen.

  953. Amen.

  954. Amen.

  955. Amen.

  956. Amen.

  957. Amen.
