  1. Well, good morning once again to you.

  2. It was interesting this morning as I was driving up to church

  3. and I had Hope 103.2 on.

  4. Simon Manchester today is preaching on Galatians,

  5. which was somewhat intimidating, I have to say.

  6. But it was Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  7. And he has done a couple of other sermons in previous weeks.

  8. So if you want to hear some more on Galatians,

  9. I'd commend going to the website of Hope

  10. and listening to Simon's messages also.

  11. Let me pray for us.

  12. Our Father and our Lord, we thank you that you give us your word.

  13. We thank you that you give us the privilege

  14. of being able to meet together today

  15. and to look at your word.

  16. And so, Father, I ask that you would use the words that I say,

  17. that by your spirit you would touch each of our hearts

  18. that we would be changed people,

  19. that we would serve you,

  20. that we would be people of influence

  21. for your gospel's sake, in Jesus' name.

  22. Amen.

  23. Well, I've titled this message

  24. Being a Person of Influence.

  25. And I'm wondering, is that you?

  26. Or is that me?

  27. Do you want to be a person of influence?

  28. Do you want to influence how other people think?

  29. What their attitudes are?

  30. How they act?

  31. I looked up who the Times magazine

  32. believe the top 100 most influential people are.

  33. Now, you'll be pleased to know that Jesus is number one.

  34. Martin Luther comes in at number 17.

  35. Albert Einstein is 19.

  36. Elvis Presley is down at 69.

  37. And way down the list is John Calvin, who is at 99.

  38. Now, the question for you today is,

  39. do you want to be a person of influence?

  40. With humility, you might answer that question

  41. by saying, no, no, no, my goal is not,

  42. that is not my goal in life.

  43. My goal isn't to be egocentric.

  44. It's not about influence.

  45. It's about God's influence.

  46. I don't want to be influential.

  47. I want to be faithful.

  48. Which all sounds really quite wonderful.

  49. And it's a great sentiment.

  50. But in actual fact, I'm not sure that it's biblical.

  51. If you are a parent,

  52. I am quite certain that you would wish

  53. to be influential towards your children,

  54. towards their behaviours, their attitudes, their values.

  55. If you are a boss or a leader of any kind,

  56. I'm certain you will be wanting to influence

  57. those people under you in a positive way.

  58. If you have siblings,

  59. if you have nieces and nephews,

  60. if you're a godparent,

  61. hopefully you are wanting to influence in the right way.

  62. Jesus is the most influential person.

  63. We know that.

  64. Even the Times Magazine knows that.

  65. And even those who do not even know Jesus

  66. or follow Jesus have been influenced by him.

  67. And Paul, the writer of this letter to the churches in Galatia,

  68. is certainly the second most influential person

  69. in the history of the church.

  70. Although in the Times list,

  71. which of course we're not going to place a lot of credence on it,

  72. but in the Times list,

  73. Paul comes in at number 39.

  74. But we know better if we're looking at church history.

  75. As Christians,

  76. we are called to influence

  77. for the sake of the gospel

  78. and for the grace that is shown in the gospel.

  79. For some time,

  80. I actually thought Paul was extremely arrogant.

  81. In actual fact,

  82. when I first became a Christian,

  83. I didn't like anything Paul said.

  84. And I based it all on the verse that he had in 1 Corinthians,

  85. where he said,

  86. imitate me as I imitate Christ.

  87. I couldn't think of a more arrogant thing

  88. that somebody could say.

  89. But I've learnt over the years, thankfully,

  90. that the emphasis is about imitating Jesus.

  91. Jesus is the one who is doing the influencing here.

  92. Further, in 1 Corinthians,

  93. in chapter 11,

  94. we see Paul say,

  95. follow my example

  96. as I follow the example of Christ.

  97. Christ.

  98. It's all about Jesus.

  99. And the Bible says

  100. that we are to be the light of the world

  101. and the salt of the earth,

  102. which is just another metaphorical way

  103. of speaking about influence.

  104. We are called to be lights

  105. so that others will move away from the darkness

  106. toward the light of Christ.

  107. Now, we're not shining our light

  108. so that people will follow us.

  109. If we're making it all about us,

  110. then we are being ungodly

  111. and we are being sinful.

  112. We're letting our light shine,

  113. we are letting the light shine through us

  114. so that others might know

  115. what a great and glorious God

  116. that we are serving.

  117. And if we want to follow,

  118. if we want to influence others

  119. to follow Christ,

  120. we will be greatly encouraged

  121. and they too will come to a relationship of Jesus.

  122. Influencing others

  123. so that they influence us

  124. is not what we're on about.

  125. But how do we do that?

  126. Well, back to our passage,

  127. Paul founded the churches in Galatia

  128. during his missionary travels in Asia Minor.

  129. Most of the converts were Gentile pagans.

  130. The Galatians had heard

  131. Paul's preaching of Jesus Christ crucified.

  132. They had accepted the message

  133. with glad hearts.

  134. They were baptised

  135. and they had experienced

  136. dramatic manifestations of the Spirit.

  137. The churches were running really well

  138. when Paul had left that area.

  139. But time went by

  140. and then Paul had heard

  141. what was actually happening then, now.

  142. And at the time of Paul writing this letter,

  143. the churches were experiencing trouble.

  144. Paul's work was being undermined

  145. by a group of converted Jews

  146. who were trying to

  147. blend the traditions

  148. of their Jewish heritage

  149. with the Christian gospel.

  150. And to do so,

  151. were preaching

  152. what Paul calls

  153. a different gospel.

  154. They tried to convince

  155. the Galatian churches

  156. that they needed to be circumcised

  157. to be full or true Christians.

  158. Now, when Paul heard about this teaching,

  159. he immediately sent off

  160. this letter to the churches.

  161. And in verse 7,

  162. we see that Paul believed

  163. that the different gospel

  164. that they were hearing

  165. was in actual fact

  166. a perverted gospel.

  167. Pretty strong word.

  168. He's shocked that they are

  169. turning to a different gospel.

  170. And in verse 7 says,

  171. which is no gospel at all.

  172. Evidently, some people

  173. are throwing you into confusion

  174. and are trying to pervert

  175. the gospel of Christ.

  176. Therefore, he wanted

  177. to influence the Galatians

  178. toward the gospel of grace.

  179. And we too

  180. need to become people of influence

  181. for the sake of the gospel

  182. of Jesus Christ

  183. and the gospel of grace.

  184. You might be thinking

  185. that you don't wish

  186. to be a person

  187. of influence at all.

  188. But let me say very clearly,

  189. as far as the gospel goes,

  190. we have to be

  191. a person of influence.

  192. And whether we like it or not,

  193. we are people of influence.

  194. The difference is,

  195. we will either be

  196. influencing people

  197. toward Jesus

  198. or we will be

  199. influencing people

  200. to ignore him

  201. and to turn their back

  202. on him.

  203. There is no middle road

  204. for a Christian.

  205. Let me repeat it.

  206. It will either be

  207. influencing people

  208. toward Jesus

  209. or we will be

  210. influencing people

  211. to ignore him

  212. or to turn our back

  213. on him.

  214. At the end of chapter 1,

  215. Paul concludes a defence

  216. of his leadership

  217. and message

  218. in the regions

  219. of Syria

  220. and Cilicia

  221. and Jerusalem

  222. by saying,

  223. and they praised God

  224. because of me.

  225. One of those statements

  226. that in years gone by

  227. I would have had trouble with.

  228. Would you like people

  229. to say that of you?

  230. Would you like people

  231. to say

  232. they praised me?

  233. Would you like them

  234. to say that they praised God

  235. because of what you did?

  236. Paul wasn't saying

  237. that they praised me

  238. because of what I did.

  239. He's saying

  240. that they praised God.

  241. This is an enormous

  242. responsibility.

  243. I want to commend

  244. Paul's statement

  245. to us here at St. Paul's.

  246. Chatswood

  247. wouldn't it be

  248. just terrific

  249. if the people

  250. in Willoughby

  251. in Chatswood

  252. were to praise God

  253. because of what

  254. the people

  255. at St. Paul's Chatswood

  256. did and said

  257. and were

  258. and are.

  259. Wouldn't that

  260. be fantastic?

  261. We would be testimony

  262. to the gospel of grace

  263. and all that God

  264. has given us.

  265. What did Paul do

  266. to lead to this

  267. praise of God?

  268. And consequently

  269. what must we do

  270. to have a similar influence?

  271. Because it's all

  272. well and good

  273. to know that Paul's

  274. done this

  275. but we need to

  276. actually learn from it.

  277. So first of all

  278. we need to seek

  279. God's approval

  280. over above

  281. all else.

  282. Listen to Paul's words

  283. again from verse 10.

  284. Am I now trying

  285. to win the approval

  286. of men

  287. or of God?

  288. Or am I striving

  289. to please men?

  290. If I were striving

  291. to please men

  292. I would not be

  293. a servant of Christ.

  294. Right away

  295. we see

  296. the beginning point

  297. in becoming

  298. a person of influence

  299. is grounded

  300. in our seeking

  301. God's approval

  302. rather than

  303. man's approval.

  304. This is the

  305. great irony.

  306. To become a person

  307. of influence

  308. influence

  309. for Jesus Christ

  310. you cannot be

  311. motivated

  312. by pleasing

  313. men and women.

  314. You are being

  315. called

  316. to have people

  317. follow you

  318. who aren't

  319. necessarily

  320. going to be

  321. pleased with you.

  322. Our base

  323. instincts

  324. tell us

  325. that we must

  326. please

  327. people

  328. if we want

  329. to influence

  330. them.

  331. They must

  332. like us.

  333. They must agree

  334. with us.

  335. They must

  336. think like us.

  337. Politicians

  338. preachers

  339. and people

  340. in all walks

  341. of life

  342. make this

  343. mistake.

  344. Every time

  345. you are

  346. disappointed

  347. by another's

  348. reaction

  349. or a lack

  350. of reaction

  351. to what you

  352. have said

  353. or done

  354. I want you

  355. to ask

  356. yourself this

  357. who is

  358. in my

  359. grandstand?

  360. That is

  361. if we

  362. are doing

  363. good deeds

  364. and saying

  365. nice things

  366. so that we

  367. are applauded

  368. by people

  369. or applauded

  370. by a person

  371. then they

  372. are the ones

  373. in our

  374. grandstand.

  375. They're the

  376. ones we

  377. are performing

  378. for.

  379. If we are

  380. serving quietly

  381. knowing we

  382. are serving

  383. the Lord

  384. and it is

  385. only the

  386. Lord who

  387. we are

  388. wanting to

  389. please

  390. then it is

  391. the Lord

  392. who is in

  393. our grandstand.

  394. Now

  395. don't get me

  396. wrong here

  397. it is

  398. right and

  399. proper

  400. that we

  401. give thanks

  402. to people

  403. and that

  404. people

  405. and are

  406. given thanks

  407. for the

  408. things that

  409. we have

  410. done.

  411. The difference

  412. is we

  413. are not

  414. dependent

  415. on the

  416. thanks from

  417. another person

  418. to know

  419. and to

  420. feel

  421. whole and

  422. secure

  423. as a

  424. person.

  425. and the

  426. reason for

  427. that is

  428. because we

  429. are secure

  430. in Christ

  431. and his

  432. love for

  433. us in

  434. all that

  435. we do

  436. and say

  437. and be.

  438. It is

  439. that freedom

  440. in Christ

  441. that you

  442. have heard

  443. me mention

  444. in years

  445. gone by.

  446. Here's the

  447. common mistake

  448. though.

  449. There is a

  450. difference

  451. between

  452. being people

  453. of influence

  454. and being

  455. people

  456. who are

  457. popular.

  458. Someone

  459. can be

  460. very,

  461. very popular

  462. with large

  463. masses of

  464. people and

  465. not exert

  466. any influence.

  467. Someone

  468. like Paris

  469. Hilton

  470. is very

  471. popular.

  472. Maybe not

  473. so with

  474. this group

  475. of people

  476. and certainly

  477. not with

  478. me but

  479. she doesn't

  480. exert

  481. much influence.

  482. The same

  483. goes for

  484. many television

  485. stars,

  486. for sports

  487. heroes.

  488. Yes,

  489. they're all

  490. well known

  491. and yes,

  492. the sporting

  493. stars might

  494. be able to

  495. give some

  496. very good

  497. tips on

  498. how to

  499. kick that

  500. ball or

  501. how to

  502. hit that

  503. bat but

  504. do they

  505. influence for

  506. good in

  507. an eternal

  508. sense?

  509. They may be

  510. very popular

  511. but they

  512. are not

  513. influential.

  514. Paul had

  515. made his

  516. commitment to

  517. Jesus Christ

  518. known in

  519. the churches

  520. of Galatia.

  521. He was a

  522. servant to

  523. Christ and

  524. that was

  525. his baseline

  526. priority.

  527. Naturally,

  528. he wanted to

  529. win the

  530. Galatians to

  531. his point of

  532. view.

  533. The gospel

  534. of grace

  535. that he

  536. preached

  537. didn't need

  538. to be

  539. supplemented

  540. by a

  541. legalistic

  542. commitment

  543. to the

  544. Mosaic

  545. law.

  546. He preached

  547. Christ

  548. crucified

  549. and Christ

  550. as the

  551. only hope

  552. of salvation.

  553. There was

  554. nothing else

  555. necessary for

  556. salvation

  557. other than

  558. a simple

  559. faith in

  560. Christ.

  561. In the

  562. end,

  563. his devotion

  564. to the

  565. revelation

  566. given him

  567. increased his

  568. influence and

  569. today we

  570. require no

  571. one to be

  572. circumcised in

  573. order to be

  574. a Christian.

  575. But we can

  576. fall into a

  577. similar trap

  578. in the Christian

  579. church today of

  580. adding to the

  581. gospel in a

  582. similar way.

  583. church.

  584. When I first

  585. became a

  586. Christian,

  587. there was a

  588. huge movement

  589. that said to

  590. be truly

  591. Christian you

  592. must speak in

  593. tongues.

  594. That speaking in

  595. tongues was the

  596. confirmation that

  597. you were born

  598. again.

  599. Now this of

  600. course is wrong,

  601. we know that

  602. now.

  603. I personally

  604. believe that

  605. speaking in

  606. tongues is a

  607. gift of God's.

  608. religion.

  609. But those who

  610. speak in tongues

  611. are no more

  612. saved, they are

  613. no more important,

  614. they are no more

  615. spiritual than any

  616. person who

  617. doesn't.

  618. That very strict

  619. movement has

  620. changed over time

  621. and it has

  622. nearly disappeared

  623. but I still know

  624. of one church or

  625. maybe you'd call it

  626. a denomination

  627. Christian that

  628. still believe it

  629. to be true and

  630. so any member of

  631. their church has

  632. to speak in tongues

  633. for them to be

  634. truly Christian.

  635. And I would say

  636. and I think

  637. scripture also

  638. says that it is

  639. a perverted

  640. gospel.

  641. But even today

  642. there are some

  643. more subtle ways

  644. that we might like

  645. to add to the

  646. gospel.

  647. Some might

  648. question what

  649. version of the

  650. Bible you use

  651. will determine

  652. how spiritual

  653. you are.

  654. I remember a

  655. friend of mine

  656. many years ago

  657. being invited to

  658. a church and she

  659. took a good news

  660. Bible.

  661. She was told to

  662. take a Bible to

  663. the church so she

  664. took a good news

  665. Bible, that

  666. version.

  667. She wasn't allowed

  668. to take it into

  669. the church.

  670. She had to leave

  671. it at the door.

  672. So there are some

  673. very odd things

  674. happening in our

  675. world.

  676. But there are

  677. things of what

  678. sort of Bible we

  679. use.

  680. Others might

  681. think that a

  682. true Christian

  683. might say set

  684. prayers or do

  685. church in a

  686. particular way and

  687. that makes you

  688. more spiritual.

  689. Others might

  690. think that the

  691. ministries that

  692. you are involved

  693. in makes you

  694. more spiritual and

  695. confirms that you

  696. are truly saved.

  697. Now these things

  698. in themselves,

  699. there's nothing

  700. wrong with them.

  701. The problem is

  702. that if you

  703. elevate them and

  704. believe that they

  705. are essential to

  706. you being saved

  707. or that you

  708. are better than

  709. others or that

  710. Jesus loves you

  711. because you are

  712. doing these things,

  713. then dare I say

  714. you have perverted

  715. the gospel of

  716. grace.

  717. And if you want to

  718. be a person of

  719. lasting influence in

  720. your life, your

  721. home, your family,

  722. your work, your

  723. school or university,

  724. people will need to

  725. see a similar

  726. unwavering devotion

  727. to Jesus Christ as

  728. we see here with

  729. Paul.

  730. Even if this means

  731. you will be unpopular

  732. for a time, in the

  733. long run your

  734. influence will

  735. expand.

  736. If people see that

  737. you are uncompromising,

  738. see your uncompromising

  739. devotion to our

  740. Lord, that doesn't

  741. mean that everybody

  742. will necessarily

  743. turn and become

  744. a Christian, that

  745. would be wonderful,

  746. but they are more

  747. likely to follow the

  748. one you call Lord

  749. if they see that he

  750. truly is your Lord

  751. seven days a week

  752. and not just at

  753. particular times of

  754. the week like a

  755. Sunday.

  756. Secondly, to be a

  757. person of influence

  758. we need to understand

  759. God's mission for

  760. our lives.

  761. Now verse 11

  762. says,

  763. I want you to

  764. know brothers that

  765. the gospel I

  766. preached is not

  767. something that man

  768. made up.

  769. I did not receive

  770. it from any man

  771. nor was I taught

  772. it, rather I

  773. received it by

  774. revelation from

  775. Jesus Christ.

  776. Skipping down to

  777. verse 15,

  778. but when God who

  779. set me apart from

  780. birth called me by

  781. his grace was

  782. pleased to reveal

  783. his son in me so

  784. that I might preach

  785. him among the

  786. Gentiles, I did not

  787. consult any man.

  788. Now Paul here is

  789. doing a number of

  790. things.

  791. He's giving his

  792. testimony as to how

  793. he came to know

  794. Jesus.

  795. He's also pointing

  796. out that God spoke

  797. to him directly

  798. through his grace

  799. contrary to what

  800. those who were

  801. teaching a perverted

  802. gospel believed.

  803. They wanted to say

  804. that every revelation

  805. had come to,

  806. every revelation had

  807. to come from people

  808. in authority like

  809. themselves who were

  810. saturated in the

  811. teachings from

  812. Jerusalem.

  813. Apparently in their

  814. view the only place

  815. where revelation can

  816. come from is from

  817. Jerusalem.

  818. And Paul's testimony

  819. is unique.

  820. I don't know anyone

  821. who has had the same

  822. type of conversion as

  823. Paul has, although

  824. over the years I've

  825. heard some pretty

  826. amazing transformations

  827. in people's lives but

  828. not the same as

  829. Paul.

  830. But he is also

  831. smashing the idea

  832. that the gospel of

  833. grace is from God

  834. alone and does not

  835. need additional

  836. rituals or behaviours

  837. that might come from

  838. religious legalists.

  839. Now don't

  840. misunderstand what

  841. is being said here.

  842. We cannot go around

  843. declaring whatever we

  844. want and say we have a

  845. revelation from God

  846. alone.

  847. Absolutely everything

  848. needs to align with

  849. scripture and the

  850. gospel of grace.

  851. That is, Jesus is the

  852. son of God, died and

  853. rose from the dead,

  854. conquering death and

  855. opening the way for us

  856. to be forgiven of our

  857. sins and to live

  858. eternally in relationship

  859. with him.

  860. Paul's revelation from

  861. God was from God.

  862. He didn't consult the

  863. apostles in Jerusalem.

  864. He went to Arabia and

  865. you might like to ask

  866. what is in Arabia?

  867. Well, we don't know

  868. really.

  869. But we suspect that he

  870. spent the three years

  871. reading the Hebrew

  872. scriptures through the

  873. lens of his experience

  874. with Jesus Christ and

  875. refining his

  876. understanding of Christ's

  877. revelation to him

  878. through the scriptures.

  879. After three years in the

  880. desert, he finally went up

  881. to Jerusalem to get

  882. acquainted with Peter.

  883. Even then, he only

  884. stayed 15 days.

  885. And during that time, he

  886. met James, the brother of

  887. Jesus, but he didn't

  888. speak to any other

  889. apostles.

  890. Now, why give all of

  891. this tedious detail?

  892. Well, Paul wants to make

  893. a point very clear.

  894. Jesus came to him

  895. directly and called him

  896. to be a missionary to the

  897. Gentiles.

  898. No person persuaded him.

  899. Remember those who were

  900. perverting the gospel that I

  901. mentioned earlier on?

  902. They believed that any

  903. revelation had to come

  904. through men like

  905. themselves.

  906. So, Paul is making it very

  907. clear that his conversion,

  908. his revelation, the mission

  909. that he is being given, is

  910. direct from God.

  911. Part of being a person of

  912. influence is determining what

  913. your mission in life is.

  914. Now, in our 2020 booklet

  915. here, we have, this helps us

  916. know our mission.

  917. In it, it tells us, in

  918. Romans 12, 2, do not

  919. conform any longer to the

  920. pattern of this world, but be

  921. transformed by the renewing of

  922. your mind.

  923. Then you will be able to test

  924. and approve what God's will

  925. is, his good, pleasing and

  926. perfect will.

  927. Romans 12, 2 encourages us

  928. to be transformed and in so

  929. doing, we will know God's

  930. will for us.

  931. We will be able to discern

  932. what is good, what is

  933. acceptable and what is

  934. perfect.

  935. This is our mission.

  936. Our mission is to be

  937. transformed into the likeness

  938. of Christ.

  939. Christ.

  940. We can do that in any type

  941. of work, any hobby, any

  942. career.

  943. We can be transformed.

  944. Sometimes God will direct us

  945. very clearly into a particular

  946. mission.

  947. Other times, our mission may

  948. come through trial and error in

  949. trying to serve God where you

  950. are.

  951. But we will never be clear of God

  952. leading us if we are half

  953. hearted about our commitment to

  954. him.

  955. Let me repeat it.

  956. We will never be clear of God

  957. leading us if we are half

  958. hearted about our commitment to

  959. him.

  960. For many people, the Christian

  961. faith is just one of many

  962. options for them.

  963. They are committed to God

  964. unless it gets in the way of

  965. making more money or unless

  966. there is a better social

  967. invitation or a relationship

  968. that is not going to be helpful

  969. to their walk with God but that

  970. is chosen as a priority.

  971. Or there are family engagements

  972. that take priority.

  973. Or there is sport becomes a

  974. priority and when the season is

  975. over, then they are back in

  976. church.

  977. They are happy to please God

  978. as long as God is willing to

  979. take a back seat to their

  980. personal agenda that they have

  981. worked out all on their own.

  982. They want to find their purpose in

  983. life but not if it means if they

  984. have to sacrifice or suffer or take

  985. some kind of risk.

  986. Too often we want the mission of

  987. God that he gives us to fit

  988. comfortably around our chosen

  989. lifestyle.

  990. The truth is we will only see God's

  991. purpose for our lives when we are

  992. prepared to give ourselves wholly to

  993. him.

  994. Do you want to be a person of

  995. influence?

  996. Then get alone with God and allow

  997. him to transform you in every way.

  998. Which leads me to the third point.

  999. And that is to become a person of

1000. influence we must invest the time it

  1001. takes to establish credibility.

1002. It's not something that happens

  1003. overnight.

  1004. It takes time.

1005. In verse 18 we see that Paul spent

1006. three years in Arabia and Damascus

1007. preparing for his life's work and

1008. in the beginning of chapter 2 we see

1009. Paul waited another 14 years before

1010. going to see the leaders of

  1011. Jerusalem.

1012. He spent 17 years preparing for the

1013. work that God had called him to do.

1014. He didn't spend the 17 years doing

  1015. nothing I might add.

1016. He was preaching the whole time.

1017. But it took that long before he

1018. received the full endorsement from

1019. the church leaders in Jerusalem.

1020. I find that absolutely staggering.

1021. In other words Paul's message and

1022. ministry were not based on a short

  1023. term whim.

1024. He stood the test of time and he

1025. proved that he was in it for the

  1026. long haul.

1027. Are you in it for the long haul?

  1028. Paul.

1029. Now we are not Paul.

1030. We most probably, I'm you know sort

1031. of a prophetic word here, not going

1032. to be asked to go to Arabia for three

  1033. years.

1034. I feel that I'm fairly safe on saying

  1035. that.

1036. But we can make some plans for the

1037. future under God to set ourself goals

1038. for our devotion time with God.

1039. Maybe have a goal of a specific reading

1040. plan, specific Christian books that are

1041. going to feed our soul so that we grow

  1042. spiritually.

1043. Maybe we need to address our attendance

1044. at church and be more regular in 2014,

  1045. 2015 and so on.

1046. Maybe it's about our community group and

1047. the commitment that we have to our

  1048. community group.

1049. We need to grow in confidence in sharing

1050. Jesus with those around us, with our

  1051. friends and our family.

1052. That indeed in our conversation we can

  1053. share Jesus in such a non-threatening

1054. way that it is normal and it's not

1055. freaky that we are a follower of Jesus.

1056. And right here and without shame I will

1057. just say to help you do that, just walk

1058. across the room starts next week at 3.30.

1059. I would love to see many of you at it.

1060. This is a simple course that will help

1061. you in those conversations that you have

1062. with friends and family about Jesus, how to

  1063. start those conversations.

1064. We need to learn and to take opportunity to

1065. learn to be these people of influence.

1066. We can put all opportunities for your

1067. growth in front of you but in the end you

1068. actually have to take them up.

1069. So the Apostle Paul was the last person any

1070. Christian would expect to exercise leadership

  1071. in the early church.

1072. Remember he was a zealous persecutor of

1073. Christians before God called him.

1074. The impact that he spent the rest of his

1075. life faithful to Jesus and committed to

1076. carrying out the mission set before him.

1077. He invested time and energy.

1078. You may not have a call to be a missionary

1079. or a preacher but God wants you to be a

1080. person of influence for someone, somewhere.

1081. It might be your children.

1082. It might be your grandchildren.

  1083. It might be a neighbour, a co-worker,

1084. another person in this church, a family

  1085. member, a fellow student.

1086. It might be a young person needing a role

  1087. model.

1088. It might be someone that you have not yet met.

1089. God is preparing you to be a person of

  1090. influence.

1091. If you will put him first in your life and

1092. seek only his approval, discover and commit

1093. to the mission of being transformed and

1094. invest yourself daily in growing in your

  1095. relationship with Jesus.

1096. Perhaps it might take years, it might take

1097. decades, but you will exert influence for

1098. which you have been called.

  1099. It won't happen today.

  1100. It won't happen overnight.

  1101. But it will happen.

1102. But it takes a long time.

1103. Remember, it is all about Jesus.

1104. That's who we live for.

1105. That's who we influence for.

  1106. Amen.
