  1. an atheist was taking a walk, hiking in fact, out in the Canadian wilderness,

  2. standing in awe as he walked, and of just the natural beauty that was there,

  3. that was there by a freak of nature, an accident,

  4. when all of a sudden in his delight of daydreaming as he wandered,

  5. this huge grizzly bear was belting down towards him, down the trail,

  6. and he realised he had no chance, and before he knew it, he was flat on his back,

  7. pinned to the ground by this huge bear, and this bear, one paw on his chest,

  8. the other one up, ready to strike him, and without a thought,

  9. he blurted out at the top of his voice,

  10. Oh God, help me!

  11. And the bear was momentarily startled by such a scream.

  12. Everything went into slow motion at that point,

  13. and the atheist all of a sudden realised the inconsistency of living his life confident

  14. that God doesn't exist, and then calling out to him when he had his time of need,

  15. and so he calls out a second time,

  16. I don't believe you exist, God, and I don't care if you do,

  17. but if you do, prove that you are good, and that you are powerful,

  18. as people say you are, and make this bear a Christian.

  19. He thought that was a pretty good move,

  20. because if the bear was a Christian,

  21. then he'd have to obey the command to turn the other cheek and not kill him.

  22. And to his great surprise, in that instant,

  23. the bear's demeanour just changed,

  24. and he pulled back his paw,

  25. and he knelt down beside him,

  26. he clapped his paws together,

  27. and he started to pray.

  28. For what? I'm about to receive.

  29. May the Lord make me truly thankful.

  30. Now I'm pretty sure that story's not true.

  31. Bears don't speak English.

  32. And I'm not convinced bears pray,

  33. but most humans on this planet,

  34. at least some time in their lives, pray.

  35. While it's true that prayer is practically a worldwide activity,

  36. what we actually mean by prayer

  37. is vastly different from group to group,

  38. individual to individual.

  39. The difference in what prayer is or means or how we go about it

  40. is in what we think God is like,

  41. and what we think our relationship with him is like.

  42. You see, when a Buddhist spins his prayer wheel

  43. or a Hindu sits in mystic silence

  44. or the Muslim with his prayer mat

  45. facing Mecca five times a day,

  46. they are all reflecting the character of the God

  47. or the gods they're praying to

  48. and what they think their relationship with that God is like.

  49. It's no different for the Christian.

  50. Our prayer is shaped and defined

  51. by the God to whom we are praying.

  52. And so there are many Bible references

  53. and multitude of Bible references

  54. that shape the Christian prayer life.

  55. And I'll just give you a couple.

  56. Jeremiah 32, 17.

  57. That shapes your prayer life,

  58. as does the whole chapter of Romans 8.

  59. It's the stunning picture of the Christian life

  60. that is laid out before us,

  61. where it says that we were once slaves to sin

  62. and death and fear.

  63. We were hostile to God.

  64. We were unable to please Him.

  65. There was a gap that we could not communicate with Him.

  66. But we are now free,

  67. sons of the Father,

  68. co-heirs in His kingdom with Christ

  69. through being united with Jesus

  70. who died to free us.

  71. We are now new.

  72. We have a new life

  73. which God Himself dwells in us by His Spirit.

  74. It's because of the saving work of the Lord Jesus

  75. that we are raised up from our low position

  76. of being cut off from any access to God.

  77. And have been granted free access

  78. to the God who rules all things.

  79. Or Psalm 145.

  80. God, my translation of Psalm 145,

  81. God bends His ear and delights to hear your prayers.

  82. You see, prayer is not an addition or an appendix

  83. to the Christian life.

  84. It is the heart of who we are as Christians

  85. and how we relate to the God

  86. who is in charge of all things.

  87. It's crucial for us because we sit in a room here

  88. and I imagine most people say that they pray in this room.

  89. But so does a Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist,

  90. as I've already said.

  91. Multitude of people, many people,

  92. most people in this world pray.

  93. But how does the Christian pray?

  94. Today is the first Sunday in February

  95. and it traditionally signals the start of ministry programs

  96. as we've just seen a moment ago in the new year.

  97. And as we kick off this new year of ministry,

  98. we are doing what we've done in the previous two years.

  99. And we're beginning the ministry year with a week of prayer.

  100. And we do this to make a statement as a church.

  101. It's a statement to God, to the world,

  102. and to our own consciences

  103. that we exist as a church

  104. to do things that we cannot do

  105. without the supernatural grace of God.

  106. Everything good and worthwhile and eternal

  107. and God glorifying that we want to do as a church,

  108. we cannot do without the supernatural grace of God.

  109. And so Prayer Week proclaims St. Paul's exists

  110. mainly to do the humanly impossible.

  111. And that's written on the back wall of our church

  112. as you exit.

  113. We have a stated objective to grow,

  114. to be a healthy church with 150 call members

  115. and 500 attending by the end of this year.

  116. That is humanly impossible.

  117. Our corporate objective was set at the end of 2011

  118. for the three years up to the end of this year.

  119. And the intention and vision behind our objective

  120. is to see people know and treasure the Lord Jesus

  121. for the very first time

  122. through the people in the ministry of St. Paul's Chatsworth.

  123. And here we are now.

  124. Two thirds of that time is gone.

  125. It's 2014 and January is over already.

  126. And we have a fair way to go.

  127. But our Lord has not called us to an impossible mission.

  128. He's called us to a demanding one.

  129. And I chose Colossians 4.2.4 for the beginning of Prayer Week

  130. for that very reason.

  131. Because if I understand this text correctly,

  132. the human key that might unlock

  133. the blessing of God's power and grace

  134. in our mission to Chatswood

  135. is devoted, watchful and thankful prayer.

  136. This text gives me strong hope

  137. that God will open a door for the word in Chatswood

  138. and faith will come to many people

  139. if we pray for him to do it.

  140. In Colossians 4.2.4, Paul is urging the Colossians

  141. to pray just like I'm urging us to pray today.

  142. In fact, to pray for something quite specific.

  143. I see two things that he wants them to pray for.

  144. And we'll look at those first

  145. before we turn our attention to

  146. how to pray for them.

  147. The two things are an open door

  148. for the word of God

  149. and for a powerful word to go through that open door.

  150. Paul wants God to work both

  151. in the recipients of the message

  152. and in him, the proclaimer of the message.

  153. So in verse 3 he says,

  154. And pray for us too

  155. that God may open a door for our message

  156. so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.

  157. And there are at least three other times

  158. in the New Testament

  159. that Paul uses the exact same image

  160. of an open door.

  161. In Acts 14.27, in 1 Corinthians 16, verses 8 and 9,

    1 Corinthians 16:8

  162. in 2 Corinthians 2.12.

  163. Each time the open door

  164. seems to be a remarkable set of circumstances

  165. that would have been very effective for the gospel.

  166. And so when Paul says in verse 3,

  167. Pray for us too

  168. that God may open a door for our message

  169. that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ.

  170. I take into mean that God changes things

  171. when his people pray.

  172. Circumstances and attitudes

  173. and receptivity of the gospel

  174. change

  175. so that instead of hitting a brick wall,

  176. the gospel finds an open door

  177. and becomes unusually effective.

  178. Such as in the case of Duncan Campbell,

  179. a minister of the United Free Church of Scotland.

  180. On the Monday after Easter in 1952,

  181. Campbell was seated on the platform

  182. of Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church

  183. in Bangor, a Northern Ireland.

  184. I apologise

  185. if I've murdered that.

  186. Particularly to you, Katrina.

  187. It's a church that Nat and I have visited twice

  188. and a dear close friend of mine

  189. was on staff there for a number of years.

  190. He had just finished speaking

  191. to the Faith Mission Convention

  192. where he sensed the inner voice

  193. say to him,

  194. Bernare.

  195. And I apologise again

  196. if I've murdered that.

  197. He bowed his head

  198. while he sat on the platform

  199. and he prayed.

  200. Again, the name came to him, Bernare.

  201. He prayed again

  202. and the name came to him a third time, Bernare.

  203. And so Campbell turned

  204. while he was sitting on the platform

  205. to the chairman of the convention

  206. and said to him,

  207. Brother, you're going to need to excuse me.

  208. The Holy Spirit has just told me

  209. that I'm to go to Bernare.

  210. And the chairman objected.

  211. You're the tomorrow speaker.

  212. But he couldn't convince him

  213. and off he got from the platform

  214. and away he went.

  215. Went to his hotel,

  216. packed his two suitcases,

  217. contacted the airport

  218. and he'd have a flight to Bernare.

  219. They said, no thing exists.

  220. They said, well get me,

  221. how do I get there?

  222. Here's one island which is close.

  223. He caught a flight to that island,

  224. walked down to the,

  225. the fishing port,

  226. asked the fisherman,

  227. how do I get there?

  228. He said, there is no commercial way

  229. to get there

  230. but you can get on my boat

  231. and I'll take you there.

  232. It'll cost this amount of money

  233. and it's almost exactly

  234. what he had in his pocket.

  235. Fisherman took him,

  236. dropped him on the beach

  237. and he was there

  238. with his two suitcases,

  239. climbed over a little bit of a hill

  240. and thought, what do I do next?

  241. He came to the edge

  242. of a cultivated paddock,

  243. saw a farmer work in the paddock.

  244. He called the farmer over

  245. and he says,

  246. go to your pastor

  247. and tell them

  248. that Uncle Campbell has arrived.

  249. We don't actually have a minister right now

  250. was the reply.

  251. He said, do you have elders?

  252. Yes we do,

  253. we'll go and tell your nearest elder

  254. that Uncle Campbell has arrived.

  255. Farmer looked at him quite quizzically

  256. then amazingly started off

  257. across the field,

  258. left his work,

  259. came back after some time,

  260. Duncan Campbell sitting there

  261. on the hillside,

  262. sitting on his suitcases.

  263. Farmer says,

  264. the elder's expecting you.

  265. He has a place ready for you

  266. and he has announced

  267. that the meetings will begin

  268. at nine o'clock tonight.

  269. While Campbell was speaking

  270. in Bangor, Northern Ireland,

  271. this elder had spent the day

  272. praying in his shed

  273. for God to send revival

  274. to the island.

  275. His wife in the house

  276. overheard him pray,

  277. Lord, I don't know where he is,

  278. but you know where he is

  279. and all things are possible to you,

  280. so send Uncle Campbell

  281. to Burneray.

  282. And he was so sure

  283. that God would do that

  284. and that he would do it

  285. in three days,

  286. that he made all the arrangements

  287. for the local church

  288. and announced all the services

  289. across the island

  290. and great revival

  291. broke out

  292. across Burneray.

  293. A great door

  294. for the word

  295. was opened,

  296. a door that no person

  297. could shut

  298. because God had opened it.

  299. And so my friends,

  300. the first thing

  301. we should be praying

  302. for this year

  303. is that God

  304. would work in

  305. all the circumstances

  306. surrounding our people

  307. and our ministry,

  308. including the hearts

  309. of everyone

  310. who hears the gospel

  311. to open a wide

  312. and effective door

  313. for that gospel.

  314. Let this sink

  315. not just into your minds,

  316. but into your hearts.

  317. The key to opening

  318. the door of God's blessing

  319. on our vision

  320. to see people come to Christ

  321. will be prayer

  322. if God so chooses.

  323. That's the first thing

  324. that Paul mentions for prayer.

  325. The second thing

  326. to pray for

  327. is the clarity

  328. of the message

  329. and boldness

  330. of the messenger.

  331. Verses 3 and 4,

  332. pray for us too

  333. that God may open

  334. a door for our message

  335. so that we may proclaim

  336. the mystery of Christ

  337. for which I am in chains.

  338. Pray that I may proclaim

  339. it clearly

  340. as I should.

  341. And so Paul exhorts

  342. the Colossians here

  343. to persevere in prayer

  344. and follows it immediately

  345. with a request

  346. to pray for him

  347. and for his co-workers.

  348. The content of the prayer

  349. is not for the personal benefit

  350. of Paul

  351. or his companions,

  352. but for the preaching

  353. of the gospel.

  354. He mentions

  355. he's in chains

  356. for his preaching,

  357. but he doesn't ask

  358. for prayer

  359. to be released

  360. from those chains

  361. in order to keep preaching.

  362. He doesn't pray

  363. for personal benefit,

  364. he prays

  365. for the effectiveness

  366. of the message going out.

  367. And we see here

  368. at a number of points

  369. in the New Testament

  370. that Paul places

  371. a significant importance

  372. on his converts

  373. and other Christians

  374. partnering with him

  375. in prayer

  376. as he seeks

  377. to win the Gentile world

  378. for Christ.

  379. He sees them

  380. as partners

  381. with him

  382. in that task.

  383. He earnestly desired

  384. their help

  385. and their support

  386. as he laboured

  387. to see the gospel

  388. spread to the ends

  389. of the earth.

  390. And there is no better way

  391. to express this partnership

  392. than in accessory prayer.

  393. When he calls

  394. these Christians

  395. to pray for him

  396. and his colleagues,

  397. he is calling them

  398. to an ongoing activity.

  399. This is a prayer

  400. for the preacher,

  401. for the evangelist,

  402. for the community group leader,

  403. for the music director

  404. and for every Christian

  405. who has the word of God

  406. on their lips.

  407. Friends,

  408. let me say

  409. how consistently aware

  410. I am

  411. that I need your prayers.

  412. if Paul needed

  413. their prayers

  414. because he could

  415. imagine himself

  416. speaking the gospel

  417. in such a way

  418. that was not clear

  419. or bold

  420. or powerful,

  421. how much more

  422. can I imagine

  423. that for myself?

  424. The greatest preacher

  425. and missionary

  426. who ever lived

  427. said that the effectiveness

  428. of his preaching

  429. depended on the prayers

  430. of the church.

  431. And if that's true

  432. for Paul,

  433. that's true for me.

  434. 100,

  435. 200,

  436. 300 times over.

  437. What happens right now?

  438. Right now

  439. is the Bible's open

  440. in front of you.

  441. even as this word

  442. of Colossians 4

  443. is right in front of us

  444. depends in great measure

  445. on how you have prayed

  446. up to this point.

  447. And so there are

  448. two prayer requests,

  449. one for an open door

  450. in the lives

  451. of unbelievers

  452. and for a clear

  453. and powerful gospel message

  454. to go through that door.

  455. And it is with a real

  456. sense of urgency

  457. that I called you

  458. to devote yourself

  459. to pray like that

  460. in 2014.

  461. And this is,

  462. brings me to how

  463. we are to pray.

  464. Paul mentions three things

  465. in verse 2.

  466. Devote yourselves to prayer,

  467. being watchful

  468. and thankful.

  469. Pray with the devotion,

  470. with watchfulness

  471. and with thanksgiving.

  472. The call of God's word here

  473. is to devote yourself

  474. to prayer

  475. and it shouldn't come

  476. as a surprise to us

  477. given what he requests

  478. prayer for

  479. in verses 3 and 4.

  480. If prayer is so great

  481. and central to us

  482. unlocking God's purpose

  483. for the universe

  484. and your life,

  485. it is not surprising

  486. that God would command us

  487. to devote ourselves

  488. to prayer.

  489. The word be devoted to

  490. or persevere in

  491. or continue in

  492. occurs six times

  493. in the New Testament

  494. connected to prayer.

  495. Acts 1.14,

  496. they all joined together

  497. constantly in prayer.

  498. Acts 2.42,

  499. they, that is the early church,

  500. devoted themselves

  501. to prayer.

  502. Acts 6.4,

  503. the apostles said

  504. that they would devote

  505. themselves to prayer

  506. and the ministry

  507. of the word.

  508. Romans 12.12,

  509. be joyful in hope,

  510. patient in affliction,

  511. faithful in prayer.

  512. Ephesians 6.18,

  513. pray in the spirit

  514. on all occasions.

  515. It means to pray regularly

  516. and to pray often.

  517. Prayer is not infrequent

  518. and prayer is not meant

  519. to be hit and miss

  520. for the Christian.

  521. Being devoted to prayer

  522. means that we are

  523. not to be haphazard,

  524. we are not to be forgetful.

  525. It means that we take steps

  526. to see that it is part

  527. of our regular life

  528. the same way that

  529. eating and sleeping is.

  530. I think it's also implied

  531. in the word watchfulness

  532. to describe the sort

  533. of prayer life

  534. that we are called to have.

  535. Watchfulness is often used

  536. as a reference in the Bible

  537. to particularly

  538. in the New Testament

  539. the second coming of Christ

  540. and the final judgment,

  541. the end of all things.

  542. The vision of the future,

  543. God's plan and purposes

  544. coming to their final end

  545. in Christ,

  546. is to govern not just

  547. the content of our prayer life

  548. but our devotion to it.

  549. God is working out

  550. his purposes

  551. and he will bring it

  552. all to completion

  553. and so don't go to sleep

  554. at the wheel.

  555. Direct your mind to Christ

  556. and his coming

  557. and the fulfillment

  558. of all our hope

  559. and our joy.

  560. Labor against distractions

  561. and hindrances

  562. and the temptation

  563. towards prayerless praying.

  564. Be vigilant,

  565. my friends,

  566. like a sentry on duty

  567. outside the camp

  568. at night

  569. knowing that

  570. if you go to sleep

  571. the enemy

  572. can overthrow

  573. your mission.

  574. This is the tempo

  575. of prayer

  576. I think that is often

  577. missing

  578. when the church

  579. has settled

  580. into the world

  581. and is just using

  582. prayer as

  583. a domestic intercom

  584. rather than a battlefield

  585. walkie-talkie.

  586. Paul urges the church

  587. to be devoted to prayer

  588. because of how

  589. tremendously serious

  590. the battle is

  591. that we're involved in.

  592. Heaven and hell

  593. hang in the balance

  594. for many people

  595. this year

  596. and so be watchful,

  597. awake,

  598. vigilant

  599. and pray.

  600. Pray the way

  601. you would

  602. if you knew

  603. that two of your

  604. unbelieving friends

  605. would hear the gospel

  606. for the last time

  607. next Sunday.

  608. And finally

  609. Paul calls us here

  610. to pray with thanksgiving.

  611. It doesn't seem right

  612. to pray

  613. for God

  614. to open a door

  615. of faith

  616. for others

  617. without remembering

  618. that he did

  619. that very thing

  620. for you.

  621. Does it?

  622. When we pray

  623. for the salvation

  624. of others

  625. isn't the fervency

  626. of our prayer

  627. a mirror

  628. of how thankful

  629. we are

  630. for our own salvation?

  631. If we don't feel

  632. thankful

  633. for our own salvation

  634. for the time

  635. when God

  636. opened the door

  637. of our hearts

  638. and unlocked it

  639. so that we saw Christ

  640. in all his glory

  641. and beauty

  642. then how can we pray

  643. with devotion

  644. and watchfulness

  645. and urgency

  646. for the salvation

  647. of others?

  648. I suspect

  649. that we

  650. grow in thankfulness

  651. for our own rescue

  652. as we do that

  653. we will pray

  654. with a new zeal

  655. for the rescue

  656. of others.

  657. So friends

  658. go to your word

  659. and remind yourself

  660. of the gospel

  661. every day.

  662. Amen.

  663. On the back wall

  664. of our church

  665. just as you leave

  666. in our welcome centre

  667. downstairs

  668. a bunch of stuff

  669. that I've written

  670. around the place

  671. we have a core value

  672. called devotion

  673. to prayer

  674. and I wrote it

  675. and it's based

  676. on this passage

  677. Colossians 4

  678. 2

  679. 4

  680. but I

  681. the one who

  682. penned those words

  683. need

  684. this word

  685. from Colossians 4

  686. to penetrate

  687. my heart

  688. and to shape

  689. my life more

  690. in 2014.

  691. Prayerlessness

  692. or haphazard

  693. prayer life

  694. makes me feel

  695. like a hypocrite

  696. more than anything

  697. else.

  698. More than anything

  699. else.

  700. I've always found

  701. prayer to be

  702. hard work.

  703. I'm an activist

  704. which means

  705. I don't often stop

  706. and for me

  707. I've had to learn

  708. to pray and walk

  709. and I have to

  710. take steps

  711. to ensure

  712. that prayer

  713. deliberate steps

  714. to ensure

  715. that prayer

  716. is incorporated

  717. in my daily life.

  718. our core value

  719. says that as a

  720. church we are

  721. committed to

  722. consistently bringing

  723. all things to God

  724. in prayer

  725. intentionally

  726. building prayer

  727. into the centre

  728. of our life

  729. together

  730. developing a

  731. culture of

  732. natural

  733. and instructed

  734. prayerfulness

  735. when interacting

  736. sorry

  737. unstructured

  738. prayerfulness

  739. when interacting

  740. with each other

  741. encouraging

  742. and equipping

  743. for prayer

  744. for personal

  745. and family level

  746. and incorporating

  747. prayer into

  748. every church

  749. activity.

  750. So friends

  751. can I encourage

  752. you to join

  753. together in

  754. seeing this

  755. core value

  756. written on our

  757. hearts in such

  758. a way that it

  759. shapes our

  760. actions and our

  761. attitudes

  762. into 2014.

  763. in the immediate

  764. can I call you

  765. to join with me

  766. in this prayer

  767. week

  768. in being devoted

  769. to praying

  770. that a door

  771. would be open

  772. for the gospel

  773. among many

  774. precious

  775. unbelievers

  776. and that we

  777. would proclaim

  778. the gospel

  779. with clarity

  780. and with power

  781. and can I call

  782. you to be

  783. committed to that

  784. devoted to that

  785. throughout the

  786. course of this

  787. year here's a

  788. really simple

  789. way of going

  790. on this

  791. in terms of

  792. the gospel

  793. going out

  794. pray one

  795. plus one

  796. plus one

  797. one plus

  798. one plus

  799. one

  800. equals one

  801. it's bad

  802. mathematics

  803. but it's a

  804. good point

  805. commit to

  806. praying for

  807. one person

  808. for one

  809. minute

  810. once a

  811. day

  812. and pray

  813. that God

  814. would bring

  815. that one

  816. person into

  817. his kingdom

  818. one plus

  819. one plus

  820. one equals

  821. one

  822. I've got

  823. one plus

  824. one plus

  825. one in my

  826. diary

  827. in my

  828. electronic diary

  829. it pops up

  830. every day of

  831. the year

  832. as a reminder

  833. and my

  834. one plus

  835. one plus

  836. one equals

  837. and I've got

  838. the initials of

  839. the person

  840. that I'm

  841. praying for

  842. brothers and

  843. sisters pray

  844. for a door

  845. to be open

  846. to the gospel

  847. as we labor

  848. to make it

  849. known with

  850. clarity and

  851. with boldness

  852. and with power

  853. in our mission

  854. field here at

  855. St Paul's

  856. let's pray

  857. Father

  858. you're

  859. you're a God

  860. who controls

  861. all things in

  862. this world

  863. you have all

  864. the power

  865. where we have

  866. none

  867. and it is

  868. your plan

  869. and purposes

  870. to call people

  871. from every tribe

  872. and language

  873. and nation

  874. under the

  875. lordship of

  876. the Christ

  877. and we pray

  878. Father

  879. that you

  880. would do

  881. that in

  882. our midst

  883. and we pray

  884. Father

  885. that we

  886. would not

  887. sit back

  888. in comfortable

  889. mediocrity

  890. but that we

  891. would see

  892. the mission

  893. that you

  894. put before

  895. us as a

  896. demanding

  897. mission

  898. but you

  899. are an

  900. even greater

  901. God

  902. and we

  903. pray Lord

  904. that you

  905. would help

  906. us to pray

  907. in the same

  908. way that the

  909. Lord Jesus

  910. taught his

  911. disciples to pray

  912. men who had

  913. prayed all

  914. their life

  915. I pray

  916. that you

  917. would teach

  918. us to pray

  919. in a new

  920. way

  921. to pray

  922. for your

  923. kingdom

  924. to come

  925. to pray

  926. for your

  927. kingdom

  928. to come

  929. in the

  930. hearts

  931. of many

  932. and so

  933. Lord

  934. as we

  935. move into

  936. 2014

  937. we pray

  938. for every

  939. instance

  940. where your

  941. word

  942. will be

  943. proclaimed

  944. and I

  945. pray Lord

  946. it will be

  947. done with

  948. boldness

  949. and with

  950. clarity

  951. and with

  952. power

  953. and we

  954. pray Father

  955. that you

  956. would send

  957. your spirit

  958. and you

  959. would unlock

  960. the doors

  961. of people's

  962. hearts

  963. so that

  964. they not

  965. just understand

  966. the gospel

  967. but they

  968. see the

  969. beauty of

  970. it and

  971. they would

  972. receive the

  973. Lord Jesus

  974. with joy

  975. and we ask

  976. it for your

  977. sake

  978. Amen

  979. for Lord
