  1. Three men walked into a bar, one ducked.

  2. Holly got it.

  3. Three men walked into a bar, one ducked.

  4. There's a dawning around the room, people are slowly getting it.

  5. Who hasn't got it yet?

  6. Don't embarrass yourself, it's okay.

  7. I never got it the first time I heard it.

  8. Your dad tells it too, oh well.

  9. I know where I got it but I didn't get it from your dad.

  10. It's great actually because you say something like that

  11. and you just get this laugh and nobody else is laughing

  12. because nobody else gets it.

  13. And then you say it again and maybe a few more get it

  14. and if you haven't got it yet, somebody can explain it to you

  15. after church tonight.

  16. But you heard the same words, everybody heard the same words

  17. and some of you understood them, some of you didn't

  18. and those on the inside, sorry, some of you,

  19. I'm going to adjust that because I can't see.

  20. That's my glasses.

  21. Brian Rose not hidden, is he?

  22. Some of you heard those words in a totally wrong way

  23. and others got the secret.

  24. The way parables work, Jesus says something

  25. and some people get it and there are those on the inside

  26. so they get what he says and everybody else is on the outside

  27. in a sense they're excluded from what he says

  28. because they don't just get what he's trying to say.

  29. We're working through Mark's gospel at present.

  30. We've been there the last few weeks.

  31. It's not really a biography of Jesus.

  32. Sometimes we talk about the gospels being a biography

  33. but the more we've done Mark's gospel the last few weeks,

  34. I've seen and for me that this is fast-paced preaching.

  35. This is Mark telling us about Jesus quite rapidly

  36. and making a whole number of points as he goes along.

  37. It's a gospel that can be read in an hour.

  38. Mark's a preacher.

  39. He's on about Jesus.

  40. He's throwing out a life-saving message that anyone can hear

  41. and he knows that telling people about Jesus is going to get a response.

  42. It will be heard or it will be not heard.

  43. It will be accepted or it will be rejected

  44. and you don't have to be clever, hate him or love him.

  45. These words are powerful enough to bring people to a real faith

  46. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  47. One of you took up my challenge the other week.

  48. I was terribly encouraged by this

  49. but one of you took the Mark's gospel from Morning Church the other week,

  50. took it home and offered it to somebody in your family

  51. and said, would you think about reading this

  52. and writing any questions you've got in it as you go

  53. and would you meet with me again sometime after you've done it

  54. and we'll talk about whatever questions you've got coming out of it.

  55. Now, I haven't heard the end of that story yet

  56. but I'm really interested to hear the end of that story.

  57. Today we come to a brand new area in this Sermon of Jesus

  58. and it begins at chapter 4, verse 1

  59. and I'd really like you to have your Bibles open as I speak.

  60. Jesus began to teach by the lake

  61. and the crowd that gathered around him was so large

  62. that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake.

  63. While all the people were along the shore at the water's edge,

  64. he taught them many things by parable.

  65. So what Mark's actually saying to us

  66. is he's introducing this new idea

  67. that Jesus used stories as a way of communicating.

  68. He used parables.

  69. He spoke in a way, he told a story to make a point.

  70. Stories that draw us in emotionally

  71. and then catch us unexpectedly

  72. with a sledgehammer between the eyes.

  73. Jesus uses stories which get under our guard.

  74. We listen to a good story with delight.

  75. The story gets past our defences,

  76. it plays with our emotions

  77. and then it drives the point home.

  78. One of the most famous examples of a story like this in the Bible

  79. is in the Old Testament in 2 Samuel chapter 12.

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  80. David is God's king

  81. and David has angered God

  82. by sleeping with Uriah's wife Bathsheba.

  83. She is a drop-dead gorgeous woman

  84. that he has drooled over

  85. as he looked down from his roof

  86. and saw her taking a bath.

  87. She was straight out of a Jerusalem men's magazine.

  88. She got pregnant

  89. and David stepped in

  90. and he didn't do the modern thing and kill the baby,

  91. he killed the husband instead.

  92. It's a really sordid tale

  93. and the king who is described as a man after God's own heart

  94. sins in a high-handed way

  95. that he really seems to have got away with

  96. and he can even look pretty cocky

  97. because he can look like the man

  98. who's taken this beautiful woman into his own family

  99. after her husband's been unfortunately killed on the battlefield.

  100. What a man.

  101. Not many people know the secret

  102. but God does

  103. and he confronts him.

  104. And he sends his prophet, Nathan,

  105. to tell the king that he's under judgment.

  106. It's a really dangerous thing

  107. bringing the word of God to people

  108. who might not want to hear it.

  109. And Nathan tells David a story.

  110. He tells him a parable.

  111. He says,

  112. there's two men in a town, king.

  113. He says,

  114. one of them's rich

  115. and one of them's poor

  116. and the rich man,

  117. well, he had a vast herd of animals

  118. and the poor man,

  119. well, he had one little lamb

  120. that he nurtured

  121. and he cared for

  122. like one of his own family.

  123. The rich man had unexpected visitors

  124. and instead of using his own sheep to feed them,

  125. he kills the poor man's lamb to feed them.

  126. And David hears the story

  127. and he's absolutely fired up by the injustice of it

  128. and so in 2 Samuel 12,

  129. it says,

  130. David burned with anger against the man

  131. and he said to Nathan,

  132. as surely as the Lord lives,

  133. the man who did this deserves to die

  134. and he must pay for that lamb

  135. four times over

  136. because he did such a thing

  137. and had no pity.

  138. So David's anger and his passion

  139. is aroused at a story of terrible injustice

  140. and Nathan plunges the sword in

  141. at home with the words,

  142. you are the man.

  143. Now, I don't know if you realise it,

  144. I see it with older people,

  145. but we have this amazing capacity

  146. for seeing injustice and failure

  147. in the lives of other people,

  148. not us,

  149. and being completely blind to ourselves.

  150. We see everything else that's wrong

  151. in the world except us.

  152. And it's a great story

  153. because this is a story

  154. that gets past our defences,

  155. it captures our emotions

  156. and it makes us hunger for what is right

  157. and it drives its point home.

  158. That's what a parable does.

  159. So Mark 4,

  160. Jesus tells a story,

  161. a parable,

  162. verse 3,

  163. it begins,

  164. listen,

  165. a farmer went out to sow his seed

  166. and as he was scattering the seed,

  167. some fell along the path

  168. and the birds came and ate it up,

  169. some fell on rocky places

  170. where it did not have much soil,

  171. it sprang up quickly

  172. because the soil was shallow,

  173. but when the sun came up,

  174. the plants were scorched

  175. and they withered

  176. because they had no root.

  177. Other seed fell among the thorns

  178. which grew up

  179. and choked the plants

  180. so that they did not bear grain

  181. and still other seed

  182. fell on good soil,

  183. it came up,

  184. it grew and produced the crop

  185. multiplying 30,

  186. 60 or even 100 times.

  187. So there's a farmer

  188. and the farmer goes out

  189. to plant a crop.

  190. I used to live in

  191. north-western New South Wales

  192. and that is big crop growing country,

  193. flat ground,

  194. big crop growing country.

  195. And when it comes close to planting,

  196. the farmers start to get really edgy

  197. and excited

  198. because they really want to get going

  199. but they've got to wait

  200. for the timing to be just right

  201. when they plant their seeds

  202. because they want to give themselves

  203. the very best opportunity

  204. of growing the very best crop

  205. that they can.

  206. They're looking for results.

  207. So when a farmer puts a seed

  208. in the ground today or tomorrow,

  209. he's not just thinking

  210. today or tomorrow,

  211. he is thinking five months

  212. into the future

  213. when he's going to be bringing

  214. in his harvest

  215. from what he's planted.

  216. One of the funny things I saw

  217. in the country

  218. was the competitiveness

  219. of farmers.

  220. The farmers would be watching

  221. one another

  222. to see who'd go first.

  223. When's the time right?

  224. Who's going to start planting?

  225. And I knew one bloke

  226. who lived in this farm.

  227. They're huge farms,

  228. 5,000 acres

  229. and this bit of a laneway

  230. that ran between them.

  231. And just before planting time

  232. was really ready,

  233. he'd go into his shed

  234. and he'd pull out

  235. his planting machine

  236. behind a giant tractor,

  237. fire it up

  238. and he'd drive the tractor

  239. up and down

  240. through his whole field

  241. without any seed in it.

  242. Because he'd look

  243. into trick his neighbours

  244. because his neighbours

  245. would see what he was doing

  246. and they'd go into their sheds

  247. and get their planters

  248. and come out and plant too.

  249. He thought it was a great joke

  250. and I think it was.

  251. In Jesus' day,

  252. farming was a lot lower tech.

  253. The farmer worked

  254. through the fields

  255. throwing out handfuls

  256. of grain

  257. and it spread around.

  258. The seeds seemed good.

  259. Nothing wrong with the seed

  260. but where it lands

  261. determines how it grows.

  262. That's what this parable's about.

  263. And he tells us

  264. that some of the seed

  265. lands on a path,

  266. never gets a chance

  267. to put down its roots.

  268. The birds fly in

  269. and they have a feed.

  270. Some lands on rocky soil.

  271. It starts to grow

  272. but as soon as the sun gets hot

  273. it dries the roots,

  274. they wither and they die

  275. because they haven't gone down

  276. deep into moisture.

  277. There's other seed

  278. which grew with weeds

  279. that choked the plant

  280. and stopped it

  281. bearing any fruit at all.

  282. But the other seed

  283. landed in good soil.

  284. It grew and multiplied

  285. even as much as 100 times

  286. which was a great return.

  287. Now I need you

  288. to help me out with this.

  289. I think Andrew's going to

  290. push a button

  291. on that PowerPoint.

  292. I want you to have

  293. your Bibles open

  294. and tell me

  295. what the responses are

  296. when you read

  297. through this parable

  298. especially in the

  299. second half of it.

  300. So when Jesus explains it

  301. he says there's some seed

  302. that lands on a path

  303. and I want to know

  304. from the text

  305. do they hear?

  306. The seed that goes out

  307. to the path

  308. is the message heard?

  309. If the seed is the word of God

  310. is it heard?

  311. Yes.

  312. Is it received?

  313. Help me out faster.

  314. No.

  315. Is there joy?

  316. No.

  317. Does it get roots?

  318. No.

  319. Is there fruit?

  320. No.

  321. The second one's

  322. the rocky place

  323. the short root type stuff

  324. it withers and dies

  325. but is it heard?

  326. Yes.

  327. Is it received?

  328. Yes.

  329. Is there joy?

  330. Is that in the text?

  331. It is.

  332. You're right.

  333. Does it get roots?

  334. No.

  335. It doesn't get roots

  336. and is there fruit?

  337. No.

  338. Fourth,

  339. the third one

  340. the thorns

  341. does it

  342. is the word heard?

  343. Yes.

  344. Is it received?

  345. Yes.

  346. Is it with joy?

  347. Come on.

  348. What's in the Bible?

  349. No.

  350. No, there's no joy.

  351. Does it get roots?

  352. Come on, be brave.

  353. Yes, it does get roots

  354. and is there fruit?

  355. No.

  356. Last one

  357. is it heard?

  358. Yes.

  359. Is it received?

  360. Yes.

  361. Is it with joy?

  362. We presume so.

  363. Does it get roots?

  364. Yes.

  365. And is there fruit?

  366. Yes.

  367. See what it shows us?

  368. There's only one of these settings

  369. where there is a result

  370. where there is fruit

  371. where the word of God goes out

  372. and there is fruit.

  373. Now it's a great story

  374. you've got to ask

  375. what does it mean?

  376. And at first telling

  377. no one gets it

  378. not even Jesus' disciples.

  379. So in verse 10

  380. it says,

  381. when he was alone

  382. the twelve and the others

  383. around him asked about the parables

  384. and he told them

  385. the secret of the kingdom of God

  386. has been given to you

  387. but to those on the outside

  388. everything is said in parables

  389. so that they may be ever seeing

  390. but never perceiving

  391. ever hearing

  392. but never understanding

  393. otherwise they might turn

  394. and be forgiven.

  395. And then Jesus said to them

  396. don't you understand this parable?

  397. How then will you understand

  398. any parable?

  399. So Jesus very clearly says

  400. some people get it

  401. and some people won't.

  402. And he says

  403. you guys will get it

  404. because God has made you one.

  405. I'm going to do something.

  406. My fault.

  407. Guess what I did tonight?

  408. I turned the fans up to full bore

  409. and guess what's happening here?

  410. My paper's blowing everywhere.

  411. Now I can use both my hands

  412. and I can look properly.

  413. Jesus says

  414. you guys will get it

  415. because the secret of the kingdom of God

  416. has been given to you.

  417. The disciples are not smart enough

  418. to work it out for themselves.

  419. They become insiders

  420. because God gives them

  421. what they need to become insiders.

  422. So if you're a Christian

  423. it is because God has made you one.

  424. Faith is God's gift to you.

  425. There are no self-made men or women

  426. in the kingdom of heaven.

  427. We don't get ourselves there.

  428. God brings us into his family

  429. and into his kingdom

  430. and we are there

  431. because of his incredibly gracious

  432. kindness and love.

  433. Jesus quotes Isaiah 6

  434. from the Old Testament

  435. and Isaiah is being commissioned by God

  436. to tell people about God

  437. and his coming judgment.

  438. And it's a really interesting passage

  439. because God knows most people

  440. will not respond to the prophet's message.

  441. He knows in advance

  442. that most will come to judgment

  443. and nevertheless

  444. he sends his prophet out

  445. in a very unpopular role

  446. to a group of people

  447. who mostly won't listen.

  448. The word of God will be veiled to them.

  449. They may be ever seeing

  450. but never perceiving

  451. and ever hearing

  452. but never understanding

  453. otherwise they might turn

  454. and be forgiven.

  455. They see,

  456. they hear,

  457. they don't understand.

  458. So you can be sitting

  459. in church tonight

  460. and see and hear

  461. and not understand.

  462. But the point is

  463. if they listen properly

  464. to the word of God

  465. they might turn around

  466. and repent

  467. and be saved.

  468. So in the parable of the sower

  469. the very first word

  470. in this parable

  471. is probably the most important.

  472. Listen.

  473. It's Jesus speaking.

  474. Listen.

  475. It's very emphatic.

  476. Listen.

  477. He's saying hear this right.

  478. Jesus is not mincing word.

  479. He is saying

  480. it is imperative to listen.

  481. You've got to hear

  482. and understand

  483. what I am about to say.

  484. Now the disciples

  485. do not understand it all

  486. and Jesus needs

  487. to explain it to them.

  488. So Jesus takes

  489. his disciples aside

  490. and gives them

  491. a ball by ball

  492. description

  493. of what this parable means.

  494. He unpacks it

  495. for his followers

  496. who want to understand.

  497. So verse 14

  498. the farmer

  499. sows the word.

  500. The seed

  501. is the word of God.

  502. And so

  503. in a story

  504. which begins

  505. with this really

  506. urgent appeal

  507. to listen

  508. Jesus now explains

  509. that they must

  510. listen to him.

  511. He is the word of God.

  512. And once you've been

  513. shown the secret

  514. it's like

  515. aha now I see

  516. I understand

  517. what this parable

  518. is about.

  519. And the story

  520. is about

  521. four different ways

  522. that people

  523. listen to Jesus.

  524. It describes

  525. how his word

  526. impacts us.

  527. And so

  528. this is a parable

  529. this is a story

  530. which is about

  531. us.

  532. The parable

  533. explains

  534. where every

  535. person

  536. sitting here

  537. in church

  538. tonight

  539. it explains

  540. where we sit

  541. with regard

  542. to Jesus.

  543. No exception

  544. I'm in this

  545. parable

  546. and you're

  547. in this

  548. parable.

  549. The seed

  550. is good

  551. Jesus

  552. is good

  553. his word

  554. is good

  555. it's powerful

  556. in its own

  557. right.

  558. John tells

  559. us that

  560. the word

  561. became flesh

  562. and camped

  563. amongst us.

  564. The writer

  565. of Hebrews

  566. says the

  567. word of God

  568. is living

  569. and active

  570. stronger than

  571. any double

  572. edged sword

  573. it penetrates

  574. even to

  575. dividing soul

  576. and spirit

  577. joints and

  578. marrow

  579. it judges

  580. the thoughts

  581. and attitudes

  582. of the heart.

  583. And so

  584. Jesus says

  585. to us

  586. we've got to

  587. listen to him

  588. and he's

  589. really saying

  590. to us

  591. we must pay

  592. very careful

  593. attention to him

  594. and what he

  595. has to say.

  596. And he's

  597. saying that

  598. how we

  599. respond to

  600. him is

  601. how God

  602. will determine

  603. how fruitful

  604. your life

  605. is from

  606. God's

  607. point of

  608. view.

  612. success

  613. and

  614. fruitfulness

  615. in a

  616. very

  617. different

  618. way

  619. than

  620. the

  621. world.

  622. He's

  623. not

  624. looking

  625. for

  626. long

  627. and

  628. impressive

  629. CVs

  630. and

  631. PhDs

  632. and big

  633. bank

  634. balances

  635. and property

  636. portfolios

  637. and

  638. legacies.

  639. God

  640. might

  641. allow us

  642. to have

  643. some of

  644. those things

  645. as we

  646. age and

  647. mature

  648. or whatever

  649. it is

  650. but

  651. fruitfulness

  652. will be

  653. seen

  654. in a

  655. life

  656. which is

  657. rich

  658. in walking

  659. with Jesus

  660. and trusting

  661. him.

  662. A life

  663. of faith

  664. a life

  665. where he

  666. impacts

  667. who we

  668. are

  669. and

  670. everything

  671. we

  672. do.

  673. People

  674. who are

  675. impacted

  676. by Jesus

  677. Christ

  678. to our

  679. core.

  680. So what

  681. are the

  682. four responses

  683. to the

  684. spoken

  685. word of

  686. God?

  687. Verse

  688. 15

  689. some

  690. people

  691. are like

  692. seed

  693. along

  694. the

  695. path

  696. where

  697. the

  698. word

  699. is

  700. sown

  701. and

  702. as

  703. soon

  704. as

  705. they

  706. hear

  707. it

  708. Satan

  709. comes

  710. and

  711. takes

  712. away

  713. the

  714. word

  715. that

  716. was

  717. sown

  718. in

  719. them.

  720. He's

  721. really

  722. saying

  723. to us

  724. that

  725. some

  726. people

  727. are

  728. hard

  729. paths

  730. with

  731. hard

  732. hearts.

  733. They

  734. hear

  735. the

  736. word.

  737. There's

  738. no

  739. response.

  740. There's

  741. no

  742. interest.

  743. It's

  744. like a

  745. male in

  746. our

  747. family.

  748. You

  749. know,

  750. me or

  751. my son

  752. or one

  753. of us

  754. sitting in

  755. the lounge

  756. room with

  757. the remote

  758. control in

  759. our hand

  760. and Kerry's

  761. calling us

  762. to dinner

  763. and the

  764. word goes

  765. out and

  766. nothing

  767. happens in

  768. response.

  769. It's

  770. ignored.

  771. And it's

  772. saying to

  773. us that

  774. people like

  775. that have

  776. no reason

  777. to even

  778. think that

  779. there's a

  780. God that

  781. they need

  782. to respond

  783. to.

  784. There

  785. can be

  786. people

  787. talking

  788. around

  789. them all

  790. the time

  791. about

  792. God and

  793. who he

  794. is and

  795. what they

  796. believe about

  797. him but

  798. they don't

  799. even notice

  800. because they

  801. are not

  802. even prepared

  803. to go to

  804. first base.

  805. And

  806. Jesus

  807. describes them

  808. as the

  809. ones from

  810. whom Satan

  811. comes and

  812. snatches it

  813. away and

  814. God's

  815. judgment day

  816. will come and

  817. they will be

  818. like,

  819. oh did you

  820. say something?

  821. Why didn't

  822. you warn

  823. me?

  824. In

  825. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  826. chapter 4

  827. it says

  828. the God

  829. of this

  830. age has

  831. blinded the

  832. minds of

  833. unbelievers

  834. so that

  835. they cannot

  836. see the

  837. light of

  838. the gospel

  839. of the

  840. glory of

  841. Christ who

  842. is the

  843. image of

  844. God.

  845. They are

  846. deaf and

  847. blind to

  848. God's

  849. saving

  850. truth.

  851. The

  852. second

  853. group of

  854. verse 16

  855. others like

  856. seeds sown on

  857. rocky places

  858. hear the

  859. word and at

  860. once receive

  861. it with

  862. joy but

  863. since they

  864. have no

  865. root they

  866. only last a

  867. short time and

  868. when trouble

  869. or persecution

  870. comes because

  871. of the word

  872. they quickly

  873. fall away.

  874. These are

  875. people they

  876. make a great

  877. beginning but

  878. they don't go

  879. anywhere.

  880. They come to

  881. church, they

  882. come to youth

  883. group, they

  884. get involved in

  885. a group or

  886. a small group

  887. or a bible

  888. study, something

  889. like that and

  890. they say oh

  891. how fantastic

  892. everything is and

  893. they are even

  894. joyful about

  895. what they have

  896. begun to

  897. experience.

  898. they seem

  899. like they

  900. want to get

  901. involved and

  902. then they're

  903. just gone.

  904. And it's

  905. almost as

  906. though they

  907. were never

  908. here.

  909. It worked

  910. for a

  911. while, it

  912. was a

  913. great

  914. experience for

  915. a time and

  916. then they

  917. just moved

  918. on.

  919. People

  920. encounter

  921. Jesus, they

  922. hear his

  923. word, they

  924. become convinced

  925. of the truth

  926. of it, they

  927. want to

  928. respond and

  929. then the

  930. implications

  931. start to

  932. weigh really

  933. heavily.

  934. it might

  935. make a

  936. difference to

  937. my living

  938. arrangements or

  939. my relationships.

  940. They can

  941. see that it

  942. might impact

  943. Sunday or

  944. discretionary

  945. time it

  946. has.

  947. In some

  948. places they

  949. might think

  950. it's going to

  951. lead me into

  952. persecution, I'm

  953. going to be in

  954. strife at work,

  955. I'm going to

  956. lose opportunity

  957. for advancement.

  958. And what they

  959. start to see is

  960. that God is

  961. getting in the

  962. way of the

  963. life that they

  964. have mapped out

  965. for themselves

  966. and they just

  967. fizzle.

  968. They are not

  969. prepared to

  970. bear the

  971. cost.

  972. But the

  973. third group of

  974. hearers are the

  975. most disturbing

  976. from a local

  977. church point of

  978. view and I

  979. guess for us

  980. tonight.

  981. It says in

  982. verse 18,

  983. still others

  984. like seeds

  985. sown among

  986. thorns hear

  987. the word but

  988. the worries of

  989. this life, the

  990. deceitfulness of

  991. wealth and the

  992. desires for other

  993. things come in

  994. and choke the

  995. word making it

  996. unfruitful.

  997. And this is the

  998. really sad one

  999. because if you

  1000. could just strip

  1001. away the weeds

  1002. and strip away

  1003. the thorn plants,

  1004. these plants look

  1005. pretty good.

  1006. I said this

  1007. morning they

  1008. look really good

  1009. and they're quite

  1010. magnificent but I

  1011. actually think I'm

  1012. probably wrong.

  1013. They look pretty

  1014. green and they

  1015. look okay but

  1016. they're not as

  1017. good as what

  1018. they could be.

  1019. They're lush,

  1020. they're well

  1021. cultivated, they're

  1022. fed, they're very

  1023. fine botanical

  1024. specimens.

  1025. And whether it's

  1026. an individual or

  1027. whether it's a

  1028. whole church,

  1029. these people can

  1030. look pretty good.

  1031. This church can

  1032. look pretty good if

  1033. it's full of

  1034. people like this.

  1035. But they're

  1036. massively flawed.

  1037. They don't

  1038. reproduce.

  1039. There is no

  1040. fruit.

  1041. These people

  1042. grew, they

  1043. choked, they

  1044. don't come to

  1045. fruitful maturity

  1046. because they're

  1047. choked out by

  1048. weeds and

  1049. thorns.

  1050. Get this, they

  1051. understood the

  1052. word of Jesus,

  1053. it began to

  1054. change them,

  1055. other things

  1056. took over,

  1057. look at what

  1058. they got

  1059. choked by,

  1060. they got

  1061. choked by

  1062. worries of

  1063. life, deceitfulness

  1064. of wealth,

  1065. desire for

  1066. other things.

  1067. And they

  1068. didn't suddenly

  1069. get choked,

  1070. weeds and

  1071. thorns grew

  1072. amongst the

  1073. good plants.

  1074. In another

  1075. place Jesus

  1076. told a different

  1077. parable where

  1078. an enemy of

  1079. the farmer

  1080. came along and

  1081. he sowed weeds

  1082. into a good

  1083. crop, he

  1084. intentionally

  1085. tried to

  1086. ruin it.

  1087. I don't

  1088. think most

  1089. of us

  1090. intentionally

  1091. try to

  1092. ruin our

  1093. response to

  1094. Jesus'

  1095. command to

  1096. listen.

  1097. We just

  1098. try to

  1099. listen to

  1100. too many

  1101. different

  1102. voices at

  1103. the same

  1104. time.

  1105. We want

  1106. to prosper

  1107. in our

  1108. work, that's

  1109. a good

  1110. thing, we'd

  1111. like to be

  1112. successful in

  1113. business, that's

  1114. a good thing,

  1115. we want our

  1116. kids to

  1117. achieve at

  1118. school, that's

  1119. a good thing,

  1120. but it

  1121. becomes a

  1122. two masters

  1123. sort of thing

  1124. because, and

  1125. Jesus says to

  1126. us things like

  1127. no one can

  1128. serve two

  1129. masters, he'll

  1130. love one and

  1131. hate the other

  1132. or vice versa.

  1133. And so we

  1134. tell kids, some

  1135. of us as

  1136. parents have

  1137. told our kids

  1138. things like,

  1139. well you've

  1140. got to listen

  1141. to that voice

  1142. at school

  1143. because school

  1144. is what's

  1145. going to open

  1146. up opportunity

  1147. into the

  1148. future and

  1149. that will

  1150. unlock the

  1151. keys to

  1152. career and

  1153. therefore income

  1154. and wealth

  1155. and wellbeing.

  1156. And if you

  1157. do the thing

  1158. properly at

  1159. school through

  1160. the week, then

  1161. I just might

  1162. let you go to

  1163. youth group on

  1164. Friday night.

  1165. I have a

  1166. wealthy friend

  1167. really interested

  1168. in Jesus as

  1169. a young adult.

  1170. His dad always

  1171. had great

  1172. ambition for

  1173. him.

  1174. He lived to

  1175. please his

  1176. earthly father

  1177. and himself.

  1178. He went

  1179. after money,

  1180. he got it,

  1181. he's felt its

  1182. power and he's

  1183. used its power

  1184. to intimidate

  1185. other people.

  1186. He went

  1187. after sex,

  1188. he got it,

  1189. had choked

  1190. his relationship

  1191. with the Lord

  1192. Jesus and

  1193. he has been

  1194. fruitless in

  1195. terms of

  1196. God's kingdom

  1197. and its

  1198. values ever

  1199. since.

  1200. Churches can

  1201. be full of

  1202. people who

  1203. have choked,

  1204. churches are

  1205. full of people

  1206. who profess

  1207. faith in

  1208. Christ and

  1209. bear very

  1210. little fruit

  1211. for it.

  1212. I had quite a

  1213. wonderful

  1214. conversation after

  1215. church this

  1216. morning, a

  1217. man came to

  1218. me and he

  1219. said, don't

  1220. just tell people

  1221. the negatives,

  1222. tell people the

  1223. positives about

  1224. this, he

  1225. said, I was

  1226. a man who

  1227. had choked.

  1228. He came from

  1229. a church up

  1230. the north shore

  1231. of Sydney, he

  1232. said, I was

  1233. wealthy, I was

  1234. successful in my

  1235. business, I was

  1236. starting to think

  1237. about the Audi

  1238. that I deserved

  1239. to drive.

  1240. He said, I'd

  1241. walk down the

  1242. street and look

  1243. in the real

  1244. estate agent's

  1245. windows at the

  1246. next house that

  1247. I might move

  1248. to.

  1249. I had a

  1250. Christian heart,

  1251. my Christian

  1252. heart I wanted

  1253. to be a

  1254. Christian

  1255. philanthropist,

  1256. you know,

  1257. that means

  1258. somebody who

  1259. gives away

  1260. lots of money.

  1261. And he

  1262. said, my

  1263. plan was to

  1264. make the

  1265. first two or

  1266. three million

  1267. for myself to

  1268. set myself up

  1269. and then

  1270. everything else

  1271. that came in

  1272. later I'd just

  1273. give to the

  1274. Lord.

  1275. And he

  1276. said, I

  1277. had no

  1278. joy in

  1279. the thorns,

  1280. no joy.

  1281. And he

  1282. said, God

  1283. brought me to

  1284. a point where

  1285. I had to

  1286. acknowledge that

  1287. I was living

  1288. for me and

  1289. not for him

  1290. and I had to

  1291. relinquish some

  1292. of my dreams

  1293. and ambitions.

  1294. And he

  1295. said, guess

  1296. what I got?

  1297. joy.

  1298. I got joy

  1299. and my life

  1300. started to

  1301. become fruitful

  1302. for the Lord

  1303. Jesus.

  1304. And he told me

  1305. this morning that

  1306. he now works as

  1307. a lay minister in

  1308. his church, not

  1309. that everybody's

  1310. got to do

  1311. that.

  1312. But he said,

  1313. to say to

  1314. people, if I

  1315. preach this again,

  1316. to say that

  1317. when we give up,

  1318. we give up our

  1319. idols because God

  1320. gives us something

  1321. much better.

  1322. That's the

  1323. motivator.

  1324. God gives us

  1325. joy when we

  1326. submit to him

  1327. and yield to

  1328. him in terms

  1329. of his

  1330. purposes.

  1331. I went to a

  1332. conference the

  1333. other day and

  1334. the speaker said

  1335. that we have

  1336. churches full of

  1337. consumers.

  1338. And I don't

  1339. think I'm talking

  1340. to you like that

  1341. tonight, but I'm

  1342. using it as an

  1343. example.

  1344. He said,

  1345. sometimes in

  1346. churches people

  1347. are like Russian

  1348. ice skating

  1349. judges.

  1350. They hold up

  1351. scorecards.

  1352. So let's

  1353. give Nick and

  1354. the Musos an

  1355. eight for the

  1356. music tonight.

  1357. But if it

  1358. drops below

  1359. five or six,

  1360. we're out of

  1361. here.

  1362. We're going to

  1363. another church.

  1364. Maybe the

  1365. preaching's a

  1366. 7.5, but we

  1367. really expect

  1368. nine in this

  1369. church.

  1370. Our preaching's

  1371. good preaching.

  1372. And the

  1373. speaker was

  1374. urging us to

  1375. listen to the

  1376. voice of the

  1377. Lord Jesus and

  1378. to act on what

  1379. he said to

  1380. us and to

  1381. move us into

  1382. mission mode and

  1383. to bear fruit.

  1384. The last word

  1385. that the Lord

  1386. Jesus spoke to

  1387. his disciples

  1388. before he went

  1389. back into

  1390. heaven, he

  1391. said, all

  1392. authority in

  1393. heaven on

  1394. earth has been

  1395. given to me.

  1396. Go into all

  1397. the world and

  1398. make disciples,

  1399. baptising them

  1400. in the name of

  1401. the Father and

  1402. the Son and

  1403. of the Holy

  1404. Spirit, and I

  1405. am with you

  1406. always to the

  1407. very end of

  1408. the age.

  1409. Now the man

  1410. speaking to us

  1411. the other day

  1412. was not a

  1413. young man or

  1414. a hot gun or

  1415. anything like

  1416. that.

  1417. He was 70

  1418. years old,

  1419. and he

  1420. said to us

  1421. very plainly

  1422. that he is,

  1423. and I quote,

  1424. this is his

  1425. quote,

  1426. damned angry

  1427. with people

  1428. and churches

  1429. that do not

  1430. give a damn

  1431. about people

  1432. who are

  1433. currently damned

  1434. by God.

  1435. He said that

  1436. with some

  1437. feeling.

  1438. The last place

  1439. the word is

  1440. planted is in

  1441. good soil.

  1442. Verse 20,

  1443. others like

  1444. seed sown on

  1445. good soil hear

  1446. the word,

  1447. accept it,

  1448. and produce a

  1449. crop 30,

  1450. 60, or even

  1451. 100 times what

  1452. was sown.

  1453. Jesus is

  1454. fruitful in the

  1455. lives of people

  1456. who don't just

  1457. hear his word,

  1458. but also take it

  1459. to heart and

  1460. accept it.

  1461. And I think

  1462. when I think

  1463. about fruitfulness,

  1464. I'm thinking

  1465. broad acceptance,

  1466. broad change,

  1467. broad fruitfulness,

  1468. lives which

  1469. overflow with

  1470. the fruit of

  1471. God's spirit,

  1472. love, joy,

  1473. peace, patience,

  1474. kindness,

  1475. gentleness,

  1476. self-control,

  1477. lives which

  1478. have mission-hearted

  1479. care and concern

  1480. for people that

  1481. we know who

  1482. don't know the

  1483. Lord Jesus.

  1484. People who are

  1485. unashamed to

  1486. go to school or

1487. to go to uni or

1488. to go to work and

  1489. say, yes, I

  1490. believe in Jesus

  1491. Christ as Lord.

  1492. Not necessarily

  1493. like that, but

  1494. however is

  1495. appropriate in a

  1496. place that you

  1497. find yourself.

  1498. Churches full of

  1499. people who are

  1500. impacting others

  1501. with the very

  1502. good word of

  1503. the very good

  1504. Lord Jesus

  1505. Christ.

  1506. I'm not sure

  1507. how you judge

  1508. yourself tonight,

  1509. where you fit in

  1510. this spectrum of

  1511. responses to

  1512. Jesus' word,

1513. and I want you to

  1514. judge yourself,

  1515. I don't want you

  1516. to judge others,

  1517. because in telling

  1518. this story,

  1519. Jesus makes it

  1520. very clear that

  1521. there is only one

  1522. response that he's

  1523. looking for,

  1524. and it's the

  1525. response which

  1526. bears lots of

  1527. fruit joyfully.

  1528. And he says,

  1529. listen intently

  1530. to him.

  1531. And I think I

  1532. want to say to

  1533. you tonight that

  1534. if you haven't

  1535. been listening or

  1536. you haven't known

  1537. how to listen,

  1538. you can change.

  1539. You can move from

  1540. a wrong response to

  1541. the right one very

  1542. simply, really.

  1543. Haven't been

  1544. listening at all,

  1545. been excited, but

  1546. that was a long

  1547. time ago.

  1548. Got stale in

  1549. church with too

  1550. many competing

  1551. voices, too

  1552. many masters.

  1553. Jesus invites us

  1554. to begin again

  1555. today to listen

  1556. very intently to

  1557. his voice, to

  1558. seek after his

  1559. kingdom, to

  1560. pursue his

  1561. righteousness, to

  1562. become very

  1563. fruitful in God's

  1564. hands in a way

  1565. which will bring

  1566. him much glory

  1567. and bring you

  1568. much joy.

  1569. If that's

  1570. something that

  1571. you would like to

  1572. begin afresh today,

  1573. tonight, then I'm

  1574. saying to you I'm

  1575. going to stay down

  1576. here with one or

  1577. two others at the

  1578. end of the service

1579. and I would love to

  1580. pray with you in

  1581. making that sort of

  1582. commitment and

  1583. beginning again with

  1584. the Lord Jesus.

  1585. Amen.
