  1. What comes to your mind when you think of the word authority?

  2. Do you think of authoritarian regimes, democracy, teachers, parents?

  3. See, the reality is that we believe that authority should be submitted to

  4. if it is the right kind of authority.

  5. We submit to the police.

  6. If someone breaks into our house, we call the cops,

  7. because they have the authority.

  8. We don't simply just take law into our own hands.

  9. What if I told you that you need to submit yourself to Jesus' authority?

  10. You probably ask me why.

  11. And the passage that we're going to be looking at today,

  12. Mark 11, verse 27 to 12, verse 12, answers that very question.

  13. Where does Jesus get his authority from?

  14. And why should we submit to that authority?

  15. The talk today will be broken up under three headings.

  16. First heading, Jesus' authority challenged.

  17. Heading number two, Jesus' authority rejected.

  18. And heading number three, Jesus' authority ultimately reigns.

  19. So let's start.

  20. Heading number one, Jesus' authority challenged.

  21. I used to, probably like some people or many people,

  22. I used, maybe not many, but I used to hate going to school.

  23. It was just a miserable experience.

  24. And back when I was young, going through that teenage angst,

  25. I used to be quite rebellious against my parents and teachers.

  26. And I was just constantly challenging authority after authority after authority.

  27. And in Mark 11, verse 27 to 33, we see the religious leaders,

    Mark 11:27–33

  28. they're challenging authority too.

  29. But they're not just challenging anybody's authority.

  30. They're challenging Jesus' authority.

  31. In the beginning of chapter 11, Jesus has just come into Jerusalem,

  32. the city of kings, the city of God's anointed.

  33. And the people, what they do is they line the streets,

  34. they cheer, they lay down their cloaks and their branches.

  35. Authority.

  36. And then he goes into the temple in chapter 11, verse 15 to 19.

  37. The temple symbolized God's presence,

  38. God's dwelling place.

  39. Jesus walks into the temple and he starts flipping tables.

  40. Just imagine I walked into church today and I saw your communion table

  41. and I started flipping it.

  42. Not that I probably could, but just imagine I did.

  43. You'd probably be thinking, what is going on?

  44. Who is this guy?

  45. Authority.

  46. And the religious leaders, they're jealous.

  47. Because Jesus is taking away their authority.

  48. Jesus is gaining a bigger following than them.

  49. So what they decide to do is they decide to trap Jesus

  50. by posing to him a question.

  51. Verse 28.

  52. By what authority are you doing these things?

  53. And who gave you this authority to do them?

  54. It's a trap.

  55. Because if Jesus says his authority is from God,

  56. he's going to be accused of blasphemy

  57. and that can get him killed.

  58. If Jesus says his authority is from man,

  59. then he's going against the Roman Empire

  60. and that can get him killed.

  61. It's a trap.

  62. But Jesus responds by asking them a question.

  63. Verse 30.

  64. Tell me about John the Baptist.

  65. Was he from heaven or man?

  66. Why does Jesus ask this question?

  67. It's because this question actually provides the answer

  68. to their question.

  69. Because if the religious leaders believed in John's authority,

  70. then they would have known that Jesus gets his authority from God

  71. because John the Baptist pointed to Jesus

  72. and told people Jesus is the Son of God.

  73. But if they say that Jesus,

  74. now if they say, sorry, that John's from heaven,

  75. then verse 31, Jesus would reply,

  76. then why didn't you believe him?

  77. Because they obviously didn't believe that John was from heaven.

  78. But verse 32, can they say from man?

  79. They fear the people

  80. because everyone believed John to be a prophet.

  81. And even though they don't believe that John's from God,

  82. they're not willing to admit it

  83. because they fear the people.

  84. So verse 31, what they decide to do

  85. is they decide just not to answer Jesus.

  86. Jesus' authority challenged.

  87. And friends, some of you in this room

  88. might be having questions about Christianity.

  89. How do you know that God is real?

  90. How do you know the Bible is reliable?

  91. Did Jesus really rise from the dead?

  92. How can you believe in miracles?

  93. And friends, if that's you,

  94. then I encourage you to keep asking questions

  95. and keep seeking.

  96. But friends, don't be like the religious leaders

  97. who pose questions,

  98. but they're not really concerned about answers.

  99. All they're trying to do

  100. is stir up trouble,

  101. trap,

  102. mock,

  103. ridicule.

  104. Friends, I encourage you

  105. that if you're not a follower of Jesus today,

  106. to ask questions

  107. and earnestly seek the truth.

  108. Because just maybe God will reveal it to you.

  109. Jesus' authority challenged.

  110. Point number two,

  111. Jesus' authority rejected.

  112. Mark 12, verse 1 to 8.

    Mark 12:1–8

  113. Last year in December,

  114. my wife and I,

  115. we went to Greece

  116. for a short holiday.

  117. And we arrived at this place

  118. called Monastriki Square.

  119. And we saw this little group of protesters,

  120. these anarchists.

  121. For those of you who don't know,

  122. an anarchist is basically someone

  123. that doesn't believe in the government,

  124. they don't believe in a higher authority.

  125. And it just totally confused me.

  126. Because I had no idea.

  127. It just didn't make sense.

  128. How can you run a country without a government?

  129. It just didn't make sense.

  130. But what was clear, though,

  131. was that they were rejecting authorities.

  132. And Jesus now,

  133. he goes on to use this parable,

  134. this story,

  135. to show the religious leaders

  136. that they too

  137. are rejecting his authority.

  138. And through this parable

  139. in Mark 12, verse 1 to 8,

    Mark 12:1–8

  140. Jesus also will answer

  141. their question about where it is

  142. that he gets his authority from.

  143. To summarize the parable briefly,

  144. there's a man

  145. who owns a vineyard.

  146. He decides to go away.

  147. He leases the land to some tenants.

  148. The time comes for harvesting.

  149. He sends his servants.

  150. And the tenants,

  151. for some crazy reason,

  152. decide to start beating on the servants.

  153. And notice the patience in the master,

  154. sending servant after servant after servant.

  155. And also notice the escalation of violence.

  156. Verse 2,

  157. they beat the servant and sent him away.

  158. Verse 4,

  159. they struck him on the head

  160. and treated him shamefully.

  161. Verse 5,

  162. then they killed another.

  163. Verse 6,

  164. keep beating and killing.

  165. All of these servants

  166. coming with the master's authority

  167. until eventually.

  168. verse 6,

  169. he still had one other,

  170. our beloved son.

  171. Finally,

  172. he sent him to them,

  173. saying,

  174. they will respect my son.

  175. After all that's happened,

  176. who in their right mind

  177. would send their son?

  178. Australia's current foreign minister

  179. is Julie Bishop.

  180. And America's current secretary of state,

  181. US, sorry,

  182. United States of America,

  183. is John Kerry.

  184. And when they're sent overseas,

  185. they're not just representing themselves.

  186. They're representing the prime minister

  187. or the president.

  188. And when they go,

  189. they go with the prime minister

  190. or the president's authority.

  191. And that's how it is

  192. when the father sends his son.

  193. The son represents

  194. the father's authority.

  195. The son is like the father going.

  196. So verse 6,

  197. when the father says,

  198. they will respect my son,

  199. it's because it's like

  200. the father going himself.

  201. The son is the heir.

  202. But what the tenants decide to do

  203. is they decide

  204. to end up

  205. killing him.

  206. They want to take the inheritance

  207. for themselves.

  208. And friends,

  209. here is the answer

  210. to the religious leader's question.

  211. In Isaiah chapter 5

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  212. in the Old Testament,

  213. the vineyard

  214. is a way of God

  215. speaking about

  216. his chosen people.

  217. The master in the story

  218. is God.

  219. The servants in the story

  220. are the prophets

  221. that God sends

  222. to his people,

  223. calling them to repent

  224. and turn to him.

  225. The tenants in the story

  226. are the religious leaders

  227. who constantly,

  228. one after another,

  229. reject the vineyard.

  230. No, sorry,

  231. reject the master.

  232. All they end up doing

  233. is killing God's prophets.

  234. And the son,

  235. here is the answer,

  236. the son

  237. is Jesus

  238. and he comes

  239. with the father's authority,

  240. with God's authority.

  241. Where does Jesus

  242. get his authority from?

  243. He gets it

  244. from God.

  245. But the religious leaders,

  246. not only did I reject

  247. the son,

  248. not only did I reject

  249. Jesus' authority,

  250. but they eventually

  251. killed Jesus too.

  252. You see,

  253. Jesus knows

  254. that he's going to die.

  255. He's already prophesied it

  256. in Mark

  257. a couple of times.

  258. Jesus knows

  259. that he's heading

  260. to the cross.

  261. Point number two,

  262. Jesus' authority

  263. rejected.

  264. And friends,

  265. in what ways

  266. can you and I

  267. reject Jesus' authority?

  268. I think that there

  269. are primarily two ways.

  270. The first way

  271. is to actively

  272. reject Jesus,

  273. make a stand

  274. against Jesus,

  275. make yourself known

  276. as a prominent atheist,

  277. hating on those

  278. who love Jesus.

  279. But I suspect

  280. that for most of us

  281. in this room,

  282. the temptation

  283. is not to actively

  284. make a stand

  285. against Jesus,

  286. to actively

  287. reject his authority,

  288. but rather

  289. passively

  290. reject Jesus' authority.

  291. And with passive

  292. rejection,

  293. you don't reject

  294. Jesus

  295. with your words,

  296. but with your life.

  297. For you,

  298. outwardly,

  299. you might

  300. profess

  301. Christ,

  302. but inwardly,

  303. Christianity

  304. is a social club.

  305. It's a gathering.

  306. It's all about

  307. being a good,

  308. moral person.

  309. Jesus,

  310. yeah,

  311. he's a nice guy,

  312. but to change

  313. your whole life,

  314. your whole worldview

  315. for him,

  316. that's another matter.

  317. And friends,

  318. both of these methods

  319. of rejection

  320. is what the Bible

  321. calls sin,

  322. rebellion

  323. against God.

  324. Jesus' authority

  325. rejected.

  326. point number three,

  327. Jesus' authority

  328. reigns.

  329. Mark chapter 12,

    Mark 12:9–12

  330. verse 9 to 12.

  331. Anna and I,

  332. we got married

  333. roughly

  334. one and a half

  335. years ago.

  336. And for Anna's

  337. wedding present,

  338. I decided to buy her,

  339. it was a new friend

  340. back then,

  341. but I decided to buy her

  342. a Samsung Galaxy S3.

  343. I know it's old,

  344. I know the S5's coming out,

  345. but back then,

  346. it was the best thing ever.

  347. And one day,

  348. we were at this restaurant

  349. eating,

  350. and Anna decides

  351. to put her phone

  352. on the table.

  353. And by the end

  354. of the night,

  355. we had no idea

  356. where it was going.

  357. And I was just so sad,

  358. not because she lost it,

  359. but because we didn't know

  360. what happened to it.

  361. We suspect strongly

  362. that it was stolen,

  363. that she might have

  364. just dropped it.

  365. But if someone

  366. did steal it,

  367. let's just assume

  368. someone did steal it,

  369. it's right to expect

  370. justice, right?

  371. It's right to expect

  372. that the phone

  373. will be returned

  374. and that justice

  375. will be met,

  376. if it was stolen.

  377. And you see,

  378. if justice is deserved

  379. for something as small

  380. as losing a phone,

  381. or someone stealing

  382. a phone, sorry,

  383. then how much more

  384. is justice demanded

  385. for the crime

  386. against the father

  387. in the story,

  388. where people killed

  389. his son?

  390. So friends,

  391. how will the master respond?

  392. How will God respond?

  393. Verse 9,

  394. He will come

  395. and destroy the tenants

  396. and give the vineyard

  397. to others.

  398. Friends,

  399. God's judgment

  400. is just.

  401. God's judgment

  402. is final.

  403. For those who reject

  404. Jesus' authority,

  405. God will bring about

  406. judgment on them.

  407. Jesus goes on.

  408. Verse 10,

  409. Have you not read

  410. this scripture?

  411. Of course they have,

  412. but they don't get it.

  413. So Jesus goes on.

  414. He quotes from

  415. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:22–23

  416. verse 22 to 23.

  417. The stone that the builders

  418. rejected

  419. has become the cornerstone.

  420. This was the Lord's doing,

  421. and it is marvelous

  422. in our eyes.

  423. Psalm 118

  424. is a psalm

  425. about God's deliverance.

  426. In Psalm 118,

  427. God's chosen king

  428. is surrounded

  429. on all sides

  430. by his enemies,

  431. but God

  432. in his power

  433. delivers

  434. his king.

  435. And back in ancient times,

  436. the cornerstone

  437. was the foundation stone.

  438. It was the stone

  439. you laid first,

  440. and every single

  441. other stone

  442. was built

  443. on top

  444. and around it.

  445. And you see,

  446. even though

  447. God's chosen king

  448. is rejected,

  449. the ruler

  450. ends up

  451. becoming

  452. the cornerstone,

  453. the most central

  454. stone

  455. in God's kingdom.

  456. And Jesus,

  457. he quotes

  458. Psalm 118

  459. and uses it

  460. in Mark

    Mark 12:10–11

  461. chapter 12,

  462. verse 10

  463. to 11

  464. to refer

  465. to himself.

  466. Jesus knows

  467. that his authority

  468. is being challenged.

  469. Jesus knows

  470. that his authority

  471. is being rejected.

  472. But Jesus

  473. also knows

  474. that his authority

  475. will ultimately

  476. reign.

  477. Jesus has already

  478. foretold

  479. his resurrection.

  480. After he is

  481. murdered,

  482. he will be

  483. raised to life

  484. again

  485. after three days.

  486. And this stone

  487. that the builders

  488. have rejected

  489. will be

  490. the cornerstone

  491. on which

  492. people like

  493. you and I,

  494. people find

  495. salvation

  496. and forgiveness.

  497. There's a saying

  498. that goes

  499. that power

  500. tends to corrupt

  501. and absolute

  502. power corrupts

  503. absolutely.

  504. Give someone

  505. complete power

  506. and eventually

  507. they'll abuse it.

  508. And I guess

  509. you see it

  510. in history,

  511. don't you?

  512. You see it

  513. in Hitler,

  514. Stalin,

  515. Pol Pot.

  516. But it's

  517. not always

  518. true.

  519. At least

  520. for one,

  521. it is not

  522. true.

  523. Because it's

  524. not true

  525. in Jesus.

  526. Jesus

  527. has

  528. absolute

  529. authority.

  530. But Jesus

  531. uses his

  532. authority

  533. for good.

  534. God,

  535. he lets

  536. his authority

  537. be rejected

  538. by humanity

  539. to the point

  540. of death

  541. on a cross,

  542. taking on

  543. the punishment

  544. of sin

  545. on himself,

  546. the wrath

  547. of God,

  548. so that our

  549. sins would be

  550. forgiven,

  551. so that we

  552. wouldn't be

  553. rejected

  554. by God,

  555. the one

  556. who has

  557. true authority.

  558. Jesus uses

  559. his absolute

  560. authority

  561. to love

  562. and save

  563. the lost.

  564. Wouldn't

  565. you want

  566. to submit

  567. to that

  568. kind of

  569. authority?

  570. Friends,

  571. I just

  572. want you

  573. to ask

  574. yourself,

  575. whose

  576. authority

  577. in life

  578. are you

  579. submitting

  580. to?

  581. Who is

  582. it that

  583. defines

  584. and dictates

  585. how you

  586. live?

  587. Is it

  588. your

  589. friends,

  590. parents,

  591. peers?

  592. Are you

  593. constantly

  594. changing

  595. who you

  596. are in

  597. order to

  598. please

  599. others?

  600. And I'm

  601. sure that

  602. in a room

  603. this big

  604. there are

  605. people

  606. that are

  607. constantly

  608. submitting

  609. to others

  610. and letting

  611. them be

  612. defined

  613. because that

  614. was me.

  615. Throughout

  616. high school

  617. constantly

  618. fearing

  619. living for

  620. the opinions

  621. of others,

  622. constantly

  623. letting

  624. my life

  625. be defined

  626. by what

  627. other people

  628. thought of

  629. me,

  630. constantly

  631. submitting

  632. to these

  633. people's

  634. authority.

  635. Friends,

  636. whose authority

  637. in life

  638. are you

  639. submitting

  640. to?

  641. A couple

  642. of months

  643. ago,

  644. I'll confess

  645. now,

  646. oh yeah,

  647. this is being

  648. recorded,

  649. no,

  650. it's okay,

  651. I'll confess

  652. that a couple

  653. of months

  654. ago I got

  655. a parking

  656. ticket.

  657. Yes,

  658. I'm so bad,

  659. I got a parking

  660. ticket.

  661. And back

  662. then I was

  663. thinking,

  664. how could

  665. they book

  666. me?

  667. I was only

  668. parked there

  669. for three

  670. minutes and

  671. it was for

  672. a good cause

  673. as well.

  674. Anna needed

  675. to buy

  676. some medication

  677. so I parked

  678. in the no

  679. parking spot

  680. for three

  681. minutes,

  682. she went

  683. out,

  684. she came

  685. back,

  686. I got

  687. home,

  688. I didn't

  689. even know

  690. that I

  691. got booked

  692. until a

  693. letter got

  694. sent to

  695. me and

  696. it told

  697. me that

  698. I was

  699. fined.

  700. And at

  701. that point

  702. I had

  703. to decide

  704. whether I

  705. would pay

  706. this fine

  707. or not,

  708. whether I

  709. would challenge

  710. it or not,

  711. whether I

  712. would submit

  713. to this

  714. authority or

  715. not.

  716. And friends,

  717. there are many

  718. times in

  719. life when

  720. you have to

  721. come to a

  722. decision regarding

  723. whether you

  724. submit to

  725. authority or

  726. not.

  727. will have,

  728. can have,

  729. sorry,

  730. serious

  731. repercussions.

  732. And tonight

  733. you have to

  734. ask yourself,

  735. will you

  736. submit to

  737. Jesus'

  738. authority?

  739. Why don't

  740. you submit to

  741. Jesus'

  742. authority?

  743. Submit

  744. yourself to

  745. Jesus,

  746. the one who

  747. uses his

  748. authority to

  749. demonstrate his

  750. limitless love

  751. for you on

  752. the cross.

  753. Why reject

  754. that authority?

  755. Why live with

  756. the consequences

  757. of eternal

  758. judgment and

  759. condemnation?

  760. Friends,

  761. although all

  762. of us have

  763. rejected Jesus'

  764. authority,

  765. Jesus gives

  766. us the chance

  767. to repent.

  768. Through Jesus'

  769. resurrection,

  770. he demonstrates

  771. his power over

  772. death and his

  773. ability to

  774. forgive sins.

  775. Through trusting

  776. in Jesus,

  777. submitting to

  778. his authority,

  779. true forgiveness

  780. can be found,

  781. a right

  782. relationship with

  783. God.

  784. Jesus'

  785. authority was

  786. challenged,

  787. rejected,

  788. but ultimately

  789. it rains.

  790. Will you

  791. submit yourself

  792. to Jesus'

  793. authority?

  794. Let me

  795. pray.

  796. Father,

  797. we thank you

  798. that you

  799. are not

  800. like rulers

  801. of men

  802. who use

  803. their authority

  804. for personal

  805. gain.

  806. Instead,

  807. Jesus is the

  808. one with true

  809. authority and

  810. you use your

  811. authority for

  812. our good.

  813. We thank you

  814. that Jesus'

  815. authority is

  816. used for our

  817. love and for

  818. our good,

  819. and we pray

  820. that we will

  821. submit to

  822. Jesus'

  823. authority.

  824. And in

  825. Jesus'

  826. name we pray.

  827. Amen.
