  1. Gracious Father, we thank you for the cross,

  2. and we pray that that power might impact us day by day.

  3. May it not be a relic of the past,

  4. but present power to take up our cross and follow you,

  5. and we ask it for your sake.

  6. Amen.

  7. Please be seated.

  8. Just quickly, an update.

  9. I believe you've prayed already for Joshua.

  10. Fantastic.

  11. He went into surgery on Friday.

  12. Didn't go so well,

  13. so he went back into surgery again yesterday,

  14. and I just received a text from Josh.

  15. Sorry, from Josh.

  16. He's an advanced kid.

  17. From Stuart and Emma saying,

  18. Josh doing much better this morning.

  19. Surgeon happy.

  20. Praise the Lord.

  21. Please thank everyone for their prayers.

  22. So please continue to uphold them as they walk in these days,

  23. and thank God for the great news.

  24. Perfect Liberty Church used to be the fastest growing church in the world.

  25. It had its origin in Japan

  26. and has since spread to a number of different locations in the world,

  27. including Brisbane.

  28. Mostly exotic locations,

  29. except for Brisbane, I'd imagine,

  30. but mostly spread through a number of different places in the world.

  31. The headquarters in Japan is considered a paradise.

  32. At one point,

  33. it boasted in having the most complete recreation complex in all of Japan,

  34. and the landscaped delights like artificial lakes and cherry trees and waterfalls

  35. were just marvellous to comprehend.

  36. Perfect Liberty Church had a very simple theology.

  37. Everyone who is a member is a child of God

  38. who finds the way to eternal peace by freely exercising individuality,

  39. and therefore you are free to express as members of the church

  40. to express your individuality

  41. and discover eternal peace through prayer,

  42. through golf,

  43. through group sex,

  44. and frankly, whatever else you wanted to do.

  45. The crucial thing is total freedom for individual expression.

  46. You can do whatever you want,

  47. so long as it makes you happy,

  48. and it's called church.

  49. That would be on their board in their foyer.

  50. Come in here and do whatever you like.

  51. On one level,

  52. it's not hard to see why it was the fastest growing church in the world at one time.

  53. On another level,

  54. it's a bit hard to fathom why it would grow so fast.

  55. The message of this church is to do whatever you want,

  56. whenever you want,

  57. with whomever you want,

  58. so long as it makes you happy.

  59. So how's that different than anyone else in the world?

  60. One of the tenets of salvation for the Perfect Liberty Church

  61. was you had to give lots and lots of money,

  62. which is why it had money for its landscapes and recreation facilities.

  63. So why would you give up your perfect freedom there

  64. to come into this church

  65. to give lots of money in order to have perfect freedom?

  66. Makes no sense in my mind.

  67. Perfect Liberty Church would have grown pretty well in Corinth.

  68. Corinth was a city on the up.

  69. After being flattened by the Romans in 150 BC,

  70. they then decided they made a mistake,

  71. dramatic transformation,

  72. and poured lots of money into it

  73. and rebuilt it in the early part of the first century.

  74. Money came from all over the empire

  75. to rebuild and improve the infrastructure.

  76. Sorry, Corinth was a major trading centre in Greece,

  77. crucial for the Roman Empire,

  78. in fact, for the world.

  79. It was a very popular tourist destination

  80. and a great place to party.

  81. The morals of Corinth were pretty low bar.

  82. So it was a great place

  83. if you wanted to let your hair down and have a great time.

  84. The population of Corinth had exploded

  85. from all over the Roman Empire

  86. in the early days of the first century.

  87. They came to take advantage

  88. of the Corinthian cosmopolitan lifestyle.

  89. Many of those who came were former slaves

  90. who had bought their freedom

  91. and were now players in the financial services industry.

  92. And as far as we could work out from the book of Acts,

  93. Paul stayed in Corinth for a couple of years

  94. to teach and establish this new church.

  95. By the time he left,

  96. there was a church family there of around about 60 people.

  97. The church was multicultural

  98. and predominantly middle class,

  99. not unlike St. Paul's Chatswood.

  100. There were a few rich people

  101. and there were a few slaves,

  102. but most people were somewhere in the middle.

  103. The other thing that we need to understand

  104. about this church before we launch into this letter

  105. is that it had some pretty major problems.

  106. This letter, 1 Corinthians,

  107. is Paul helping this church to get back on track.

  108. And so just imagine it there.

  109. You're squeezed together in one of the houses

  110. of one of the rich people at Corinth

  111. because they're the only ones who can fit 60 people in.

  112. And you're there to hear Paul's letter.

  113. And he says,

  114. Paul,

  115. called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus

  116. by the will of God and our brothers,

  117. to the church of God in Corinth,

  118. to those sanctified in Christ Jesus

  119. and called to be holy,

  120. together with those everywhere

  121. who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  122. their Lord and ours.

  123. Grace and peace to you from God our Father

  124. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  125. I always thank God for you

  126. because of his grace given to you in Christ Jesus.

  127. For in him you have been enriched in every way,

  128. in all your speaking and in all your knowledge

  129. because our testament of our Christ was confirmed in you.

  130. Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift

  131. as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

  132. He will keep you strong to the end

  133. so that you will be blameless

  134. on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  135. God who has called you into fellowship with his son,

  136. Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

  137. Notice that Paul starts his letter

  138. by describing his church in Corinth

  139. as to those sanctified in Christ Jesus

  140. and called to be holy,

  141. together with all those everywhere

  142. who call on the name of our Lord.

  143. And again, I always thank God for you

  144. because of his grace given to you in Christ Jesus.

  145. And again, you have been enriched in every way.

  146. And again, you do not lack any spiritual gift

  147. as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed

  148. and he will keep you strong to the end

  149. so that you will be blameless

  150. on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  151. You see, at the beginning of this letter,

  152. Paul looks back to what this church has received

  153. in Jesus Christ.

  154. And then he tells them to look forward to the goal

  155. as you eagerly await the Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

  156. And he promises them that God

  157. who has called you into fellowship with his son,

  158. our Lord Jesus Christ, is faithful.

  159. They have a beginning in Jesus

  160. and they have a future to aim for.

  161. The day when Jesus Christ is revealed.

  162. And the problem for this church in Corinth

  163. is they have forgotten what it means

  164. to live in between times.

  165. They've forgotten what it means

  166. to live out their future hope in the present.

  167. Even though they were the Christian church in Corinth,

  168. an inordinate amount of Corinth was in this church.

  169. And so Paul's writing this letter to get them back on track.

  170. And how does he do that?

  171. He does it by getting to refocus on Jesus.

  172. Twelve times in the start of this letter,

  173. we have Jesus Christ or our Lord Jesus Christ

  174. or Christ Jesus our Lord mentioned.

  175. Paul is simply telling this church

  176. to refocus on the crucified Jesus

  177. as the foundation of how they live out their life

  178. together in the present.

  179. That is fundamentally his core message

  180. through this letter.

  181. There is a beginning in Jesus

  182. and a future that they are heading to.

  183. And in between, he's calling them right now

  184. in the present to live the cross

  185. shaped life.

  186. That is what the Corinthian church needed to get

  187. because they weren't living the cross shaped life.

  188. They were operating like perfect liberty church.

  189. The first evidence of that is the divisions

  190. and the factions in the church.

  191. Listen to how Paul describes it in verses 10 to 17.

  192. I appeal to you brothers in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  193. that all of you agree with one another

  194. so that there may be no divisions among you

  195. and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

  196. My brothers, some from Chloe's household,

  197. she got dobbed in,

  198. have been informed me

  199. and informed me that there are quarrels among you.

  200. What I mean is this,

  201. one of you says I follow Paul,

  202. another says I follow Apollos,

  203. another I follow Cephas,

  204. still another I follow Christ.

  205. Is Christ divided?

  206. Was Paul crucified for you?

  207. Were you baptised in the name of Paul?

  208. I'm thankful that I did not baptise any of you

  209. except Crispus and Gaius

  210. so no one can say that you're baptised into my name.

  211. Yes, I also baptised the household of Stephanas.

  212. Beyond that, I don't remember if I baptised anyone else.

  213. For Christ did not send me to baptise,

  214. but to preach the gospel,

  215. not with words of human wisdom,

  216. lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

  217. Corinth was no different than Jatswood,

  218. no different than Sydney,

  219. no different than Australia.

  220. Like us, they had a celebrity culture.

  221. The big celebrities in Corinth weren't the singers,

  222. or nowadays the chefs.

  223. They weren't the movie stars,

  224. they weren't the socialists,

  225. they weren't the sports people,

  226. they were the public speakers and the orators.

  227. People flocked from everywhere

  228. to hear these speakers deliver their lectures

  229. on the latest ideas.

  230. When Paul talks here about human wisdom,

  231. he's talking about human worldview.

  232. These guys came in and just spoke about stuff.

  233. They would speak about everything and anything,

  234. politics, architecture, sex, leisure, art.

  235. The better that they presented,

  236. the more adherence they got,

  237. and the bigger the payday it was for them.

  238. People would come and hear their favourite speakers,

  239. and then they would argue their viewpoints with one another.

  240. The disciples of each one of these speakers

  241. would argue their viewpoints with each other.

  242. One of Paul's contemporaries,

  243. a Greek orator and historian of the Roman Empire,

  244. a guy named Dio Chrysostom,

  245. wrote this about Corinth.

  246. He himself was a historian and an orator.

  247. He said,

  248. When I arrived,

  249. I was escorted with much enthusiasm and respect,

  250. the recipients of my visits

  251. being grateful for my presence

  252. and begging me to address them and advise them

  253. and flocking around my door from early dawn.

  254. One could hear rival crowds around the temple

  255. shouting and reviling one another.

  256. Disciples of one fighting with the disciples of another

  257. as the writers read their stupid works.

  258. It's a little ironic that he should call other people's works stupid

  259. when one of his most famous works

  260. was a speech called,

  261. In Praise of Hair.

  262. It was against baldness.

  263. So what Dio Chrysostom describes there

  264. wasn't football hooliganism,

  265. it was philosophy hooliganism.

  266. The celebrity culture,

  267. the worldviews of Corinth

  268. fed all into the life of the church.

  269. We see it there in verses 10 to 17.

  270. If the Corinthians were a little bit underwhelmed by Paul

  271. and his speaking,

  272. they loved Apollos.

  273. Oh, we love Apollos.

  274. He could really preach that guy.

  275. And this led them to start saying things like,

  276. well, we're Apollos people.

  277. Another group over there said,

  278. well, we,

  279. Paul's our guru,

  280. we're Paul people.

  281. Another group says,

  282. no, no,

  283. we're Peter people,

  284. most likely the Jews,

  285. we're Peter people.

  286. Some who presumably thought

  287. they were all above all church leadership.

  288. No, no, no.

  289. We're Jesus people.

  290. That's the trump card on you all.

  291. Even the Jesus people faction here

  292. are meant to be read negatively

  293. because they weren't Jesus people

  294. out of submission to Christ.

  295. They were Jesus people

  296. to beat the other factions.

  297. The church hadn't actually split,

  298. but they were heading that way

  299. because they had adopted the wisdom

  300. and the worldview of Corinth

  301. and focused on personalities

  302. and outward gifts and appearances

  303. and skill and polish

  304. rather than this cross.

  305. And here I think is one of the main issues for them.

  306. They began to think of their teachers,

  307. their pastors,

  308. in terms of itinerant philosophers

  309. and celebrities.

  310. and their new faith

  311. in Jesus

  312. as the product,

  313. as a new wisdom

  314. for Corinth.

  315. The gospel message

  316. became something

  317. that they just attached

  318. to the end of their life.

  319. The Christian faith

  320. has become

  321. more than,

  322. nothing more than just

  323. simply a bunch of ideas

  324. that they have

  325. given intellectual assent to

  326. and claim to believe.

  327. And Paul's message here

  328. in this chapter,

  329. in fact,

  330. I think the rest of the book,

  331. is that

  332. the crucified Jesus

  333. isn't another piece of wisdom

  334. that you collect

  335. and you stick it on your CV.

  336. The message of the crucified Christ

  337. stands in total contrast

  338. to human wisdom

  339. and power.

  340. The cross of Christ

  341. is in fact

  342. the great reversal

  343. of all those things

  344. that you long for.

  345. This is how Paul puts it

  346. in verse 18,

  347. for the message of the cross

  348. is foolishness

  349. to those who are perishing,

  350. but to us who are being saved

  351. it is the power of God

  352. for it is written

  353. I will destroy

  354. the wisdom of the wise

  355. and the intelligent

  356. of the intelligent

  357. I will frustrate.

  358. Where is the wise man?

  359. Where is the scholar?

  360. Where is the philosopher

  361. of this age?

  362. Has not God

  363. made foolish

  364. the wisdom of the world?

  365. For since

  366. in the wisdom of God

  367. the world

  368. through its wisdom

  369. did not know him,

  370. God was pleased

  371. through the foolishness

  372. of what was preached

  373. to save those who believe.

  374. Jews demand

  375. miraculous signs

  376. and Greeks

  377. look for wisdom.

  378. but we preach

  379. Christ crucified

  380. a stumbling block

  381. to Jews

  382. and foolishness

  383. to Gentiles

  384. but to those

  385. whom God has called

  386. both Jews and Greeks

  387. Christ the power of God

  388. and the wisdom of God.

  389. For the foolishness

  390. of God

  391. is wiser

  392. than man's wisdom

  393. and the weakness

  394. of God

  395. is stronger

  396. than man's strength.

  397. You see,

  398. power was a big issue

  399. in the culture

  400. of Corinth.

  401. It didn't matter

  402. whether you were Roman

  403. or whether you were Greek

  404. or whether you were Jew,

  405. sort of the three main cultures

  406. that made up Corinth.

  407. Power was essential

  408. in one way or another.

  409. That is why

  410. they had forgotten

  411. the cross

  412. because Jesus

  413. on the cross

  414. looks defeated.

  415. He looks weak.

  416. It's an embarrassment

  417. in that culture.

  418. It's a stumbling block

  419. in that culture

  420. to preach

  421. a crucified Messiah.

  422. And if I asked you today,

  423. just today,

  424. to share with me now,

  425. if we had a roving mic,

  426. stand up

  427. and share with me

  428. some of the great displays

  429. of the power of God

  430. in the Bible.

  431. There is a number of things

  432. that you could turn to

  433. but who here would stand up

  434. and say the cross of Christ?

  435. That's the power of God.

  436. That's the display

  437. of God's power.

  438. God's power.

  439. What sort of philosopher

  440. in human wisdom

  441. would ever come up

  442. with God himself

  443. dying on a cross

  444. in total weakness

  445. being the great demonstration

  446. of that God's power?

  447. Jesus,

  448. through his weakness

  449. in dying on the cross,

  450. has dealt with sin

  451. and has become life

  452. and power

  453. for all of eternity.

  454. He descended to the lowest

  455. of lows

  456. in weakness

  457. and he is now given

  458. the name that is above

  459. every name.

  460. That at the name of Jesus,

  461. every knee would bow

  462. and every tongue confess

  463. that he is Lord

  464. over everything.

  465. God's power

  466. and he is now given

  467. what Paul is saying here

  468. is you can't get

  469. the cross of Christ

  470. and attach it

  471. to your human wisdom.

  472. It blows human wisdom

  473. out of the water.

  474. God has more wisdom

  475. on a bad day

  476. than all the minds

  477. of the world

  478. together on a good day.

  479. He has more power

  480. in his little toe

  481. than the might

  482. of a world superfowl.

  483. And the only answer

  484. for this church

  485. at Corinth

  486. is to

  487. abandon

  488. their human wisdom

  489. and look

  490. to the crucified Jesus.

  491. There's only one thing

  492. that can bring

  493. this church family

  494. back together

  495. and to stop

  496. it splittering.

  497. There is only one

  498. antidote

  499. to their boasting

  500. about their cleverness

  501. and about their cultures.

  502. It's the message

  503. of Jesus.

  504. Death on the cross.

  505. What they need

  506. to discover

  507. is that the message

  508. of the cross

  509. isn't simply

  510. another idea

  511. to intellectually

  512. debate over

  513. and to put in

  514. their CV.

  515. The gospel

  516. isn't another

  517. form of wisdom.

  518. The gospel

  519. means belonging

  520. to Jesus.

  521. It's not just

  522. the intellectual

  523. idea.

  524. It means

  525. you belong.

  526. That's what

  527. the gospel is.

    Isaiah 3 chapter mention

  528. Chapter 3

  529. says,

  530. And you are

  531. of Christ

  532. and Christ

  533. is of God.

  534. Chapter 6

  535. says,

  536. You were bought

  537. at a price,

  538. therefore honour

  539. God with your body.

  540. You no longer

  541. live for yourself.

  542. You belong to Jesus.

  543. The only answer

  544. to all the

  545. Corinthian problems

  546. and our problems,

  547. the problems of

  548. individualism

  549. and personal preference

  550. is to live

  551. a cross-centred

  552. life together.

  553. And what does that

  554. mean?

  555. It actually means

  556. to make Jesus

  557. and his death

  558. the main thing

  559. in our lives,

  560. both individually

  561. and corporately.

  562. make Jesus

  563. and his death

  564. the most important

  565. thing in your life,

  566. the thing that

  567. you're passionate about,

  568. the thing that

  569. shapes your behaviour

  570. and your thinking

  571. and your decision-making

  572. and your choices.

  573. This really is

  574. the central message

  575. of this letter.

  576. We are to be

  577. people of one

  578. thing,

  579. people of the cross,

  580. living cross-centred,

  581. cross-shaped,

  582. cross-defined

  583. lives.

  584. The overarching

  585. challenge of this

  586. letter is to live

  587. all day,

  588. every day,

  589. together in a way

  590. that is controlled

  591. by God's wisdom

  592. and he has shown

  593. it on the cross.

  594. And that means

  595. taking up our cross

  596. and dying to self.

  597. I was at a birthday

  598. party yesterday

  599. and one of the

  600. questions during

  601. a party game

  602. was something

  603. like,

  604. use one word

  605. to describe

  606. the birthday girl.

  607. I was thinking

  608. about various

  609. people

  610. yesterday

  611. as I was writing

  612. some of this

  613. and I was thinking,

  614. can I come up

  615. with one word

  616. to describe

  617. what they are

  618. passionate about?

  619. You know,

  620. you look at the person,

  621. you just,

  622. you know,

  623. hold random,

  624. look at the person

  625. and go,

  626. yeah,

  627. golf.

  628. You know,

  629. surfing,

  630. retirement,

  631. children,

  632. job,

  633. career,

  634. flowers,

  635. caravan,

  636. gardening,

  637. ballroom dancing,

  638. single malt scotch,

  639. fishing,

  640. travel,

  641. holding cars,

  642. Sydney swans.

  643. I mean,

  644. it just quickly

  645. came to my mind,

  646. just think a whole

  647. random,

  648. one thing to

  649. identify them.

  650. Now,

  651. don't get me wrong,

  652. there's nothing evil

  653. about any of those

  654. things,

  655. with the possible

  656. exception of

  657. Sydney swans.

  658. What I'm saying

  659. is,

  660. they cannot be

  661. the main thing

  662. in our lives.

  663. it is just

  664. foolishness.

  665. The wise thing

  666. to do,

  667. the only wise

  668. thing to do

  669. is to make

  670. Jesus and

  671. his cross

  672. the controlling

  673. centre of

  674. our lives.

  675. And I suspect

  676. that if I did

  677. a similar sort

  678. of thing today

  679. in a survey

  680. and just whipped

  681. around all

  682. of St.

  683. Paul's and said,

  684. what's the main

  685. thing about St.

  686. Paul's?

  687. There is a number

  688. of things that we

  689. could identify with

  690. and say,

  691. this ought to be

  692. our main thing.

  693. And what this

  694. passage says,

  695. no, no, no.

  696. If it's not

  697. Jesus crucified,

  698. it's not the

  699. main thing.

  700. And so Paul

  701. does something

  702. really unusual

  703. as he finishes

  704. this chapter.

  705. See what he

  706. says there in

  707. verses 26 and

  708. 27?

  709. Brothers,

  710. think of what

  711. you were when

  712. you were called.

  713. None of you

  714. were wise by

  715. human standards.

  716. Not many of

  717. you were

  718. influential.

  719. Not many of

  720. you were of

  721. noble birth.

  722. But God

  723. chose the foolish

  724. things of the

  725. world to shame

  726. the wise,

  727. God chose

  728. the weak

  729. things of

  730. the world

  731. to shame

  732. the strong.

  733. He basically

  734. says there,

  735. hey guys,

  736. just for a

  737. moment,

  738. look up.

  739. Look up.

  740. He said,

  741. heads up,

  742. just look

  743. around the

  744. room.

  745. Look at the

  746. people sitting

  747. in front of

  748. you and

  749. beside you.

  750. Look at

  751. each other.

  752. Aren't you

  753. a strange

  754. lot?

  755. What a

  756. weird collection

  757. of people.

  758. people.

  759. He basically

  760. says only

  761. the cross

  762. of Christ

  763. can explain

  764. that.

  765. Conventional

  766. human wisdom

  767. can't explain

  768. it.

  769. You're not

  770. here because

  771. you were wise

  772. and powerful

  773. and you

  774. wanted to

  775. join a group

  776. of wise

  777. and powerful

  778. people.

  779. If God

  780. worked

  781. according to

  782. conventional

  783. wisdom,

  784. if God

  785. had handpicked

  786. his church

  787. on the

  788. basis of

  789. human

  790. qualification,

  791. let's face

  792. it,

  793. I for one

  794. wouldn't

  795. get a gig.

  796. It dawned

  797. on me this

  798. week in

  799. preparation,

  800. I didn't

  801. include it,

  802. it dawned on

  803. me this

  804. week,

  805. I'm not

  806. number one

  807. in the

  808. world at

  809. anything.

  810. At

  811. anything.

  812. In fact,

  813. I'm pretty

  814. sure I'm

  815. not number

  816. one in

  817. chats

  818. would at

  819. anything.

  820. I'm

  821. pretty

  822. average.

  823. That's

  824. partly

  825. depressing,

  826. but it's

  827. the wisdom

  828. of God.

  829. The cross

  830. is the very

  831. expression of

  832. how God

  833. works.

  834. He works

  835. to bring

  836. people like

  837. us,

  838. relatively

  839. unimpressive

  840. people from

  841. all different

  842. backgrounds

  843. together,

  844. and he

  845. empowers

  846. us to

  847. do what

  848. we cannot

  849. do on

  850. our own,

  851. and that

  852. is to

  853. die to

  854. ourself

  855. and pursue

  856. unity in

  857. Jesus.

  858. That is

  859. the wisdom

  860. that the

  861. United Nations

  862. hasn't got

  863. and the

  864. power that

  865. they don't

  866. have.

  867. If we

  868. make Jesus

  869. our main

  870. thing,

  871. then God

  872. gives us

  873. the power

  874. to do

  875. something

  876. incredible,

  877. the power

  878. to stop

  879. boasting

  880. about

  881. ourselves

  882. and our

  883. personal

  884. preferences

  885. and our

  886. cultures.

  887. See what

  888. it says

  889. in verse

  890. 28,

  891. he chose

  892. the lowly

  893. things of

  894. the world

  895. and the

  896. despising

  897. the things

  898. that are

  899. not to

  900. nullify

  901. the things

  902. that are

  903. so that

  904. no one

  905. may boast

  906. before him.

  907. You see,

  908. when we

  909. look to

  910. Jesus,

  911. when we

  912. look at

  913. Jesus on

  914. the cross,

  915. we won't

  916. look to

  917. ourselves.

  918. We won't

  919. waste our

  920. breath trying

  921. to convince

  922. ourselves or

  923. anyone else

  924. that we

  925. are fantastic.

  926. Oh, but

  927. friends, how

  928. prone we are

  929. to do that.

  930. How skilled

  931. we are at

  932. it.

  933. I think it

  934. would be both

  935. entertaining and

  936. quite revealing

  937. if each of us

  938. had a flashing

  939. beacon on

  940. our heads

  941. and that

  942. beacon was

  943. wired to

  944. our hearts

  945. and it

  946. went off

  947. every time

  948. we started

  949. to talk

  950. about ourselves

  951. and to

  952. think ourselves

  953. up.

  954. Every time

  955. we thought

  956. high thoughts

  957. of ourselves,

  958. every time

  959. we took

  960. credit for

  961. other people's

  962. ideas,

  963. every subtle

  964. little reference

  965. to how

  966. spiritual we

  967. are or how

  968. good parents

  969. we are or

  970. how well

  971. things are

  972. going at

  973. work and

  974. how smart

  975. at all,

  976. or even

  977. if it's

  978. just simply,

  979. my, my,

  980. I would

  981. not do

  982. that.

  983. And the

  984. beacon would

  985. go

  986. zzzz.

  987. It would

  988. be particularly

  989. entertaining so

  990. long as I

  991. could take

  992. mine off and

  993. watch everyone

  994. else's go

  995. off.

  996. And more

  997. importantly the

  998. red beacon

  999. would go

  1000. off.

  1001. More

  1002. importantly it

  1003. would be so

  1004. revealing because

  1005. it would be

  1006. a reminder to

  1007. us every time

  1008. we took our

  1009. eyes off the

  1010. cross.

  1011. That's what's

  1012. happening when

  1013. the beacon

  1014. goes off.

  1015. We're taking

  1016. our eyes off

  1017. the cross and

  1018. we're putting

  1019. it fair and

  1020. square on

  1021. ourselves.

  1022. You see,

  1023. when we focus

  1024. on the cross,

  1025. we simply

  1026. can't talk

  1027. ourselves up.

  1028. We can't

  1029. boast about

  1030. ourselves,

  1031. but we will

  1032. start raving

  1033. about Jesus.

  1034. We also

  1035. won't make

  1036. our personal

  1037. preferences and

  1038. our culture

  1039. the main

  1040. thing.

  1041. The very

  1042. things which

  1043. every day

  1044. threaten to

  1045. divide us.

  1046. You see,

  1047. it wasn't

  1048. Paul,

  1049. it wasn't

  1050. Apollos,

  1051. it wasn't

  1052. Cephas,

  1053. it wasn't

  1054. Steve

  1055. Jeffrey,

  1056. it wasn't

  1057. Chris Jones,

  1058. it wasn't

  1059. Brian Tung,

  1060. it wasn't

  1061. Fay Lowe or

  1062. anyone else

  1063. who died

  1064. for you.

  1065. It wasn't

  1066. anyone else

  1067. who brought

  1068. you in to

  1069. the family

  1070. of God.

  1071. It was

  1072. Jesus.

  1073. He is the

  1074. one who

  1075. brings us

  1076. into his

  1077. family and

  1078. he is the

  1079. one we are

  1080. to follow.

  1081. He is the

  1082. one we

  1083. serve,

  1084. he is the

  1085. one we

  1086. boast about.

  1087. Right at the

  1088. end of the

  1089. chapter,

  1090. verse 30,

  1091. Paul says

  1092. this,

  1093. just a

  1094. reminder of

  1095. the significance

  1096. of Jesus.

  1097. He says,

  1098. because of

  1099. him that you

  1100. are in

  1101. Christ Jesus

  1102. who has

  1103. become for

  1104. us wisdom

  1105. from God,

  1106. that is,

  1107. our righteousness,

  1108. our holiness

  1109. and redemption.

  1110. Paul uses

  1111. three very

  1112. different words

  1113. here to

  1114. describe what

  1115. Christ has

  1116. done for us

  1117. and the

  1118. motivation for

  1119. us to keep

  1120. looking to

  1121. him and to

  1122. live the

  1123. cross-shaped

  1124. life.

  1125. The first

  1126. word here is

  1127. from the

  1128. law courts,

  1129. it's righteousness,

  1130. it's a legal

  1131. term.

  1132. Jesus has

  1133. made it

  1134. possible for

  1135. us to be

  1136. given a

  1137. perfect record,

  1138. not just a

  1139. clean record,

  1140. a flawless

  1141. record.

  1142. One where

  1143. we've done

  1144. absolutely

  1145. everything right.

  1146. The second

  1147. word is from

  1148. the temple,

  1149. it's holiness,

  1150. it's Jesus

  1151. who has

  1152. cleaned us

  1153. up and

  1154. made it

  1155. possible for

  1156. us to

  1157. come into

  1158. the very

  1159. presence of

  1160. God.

  1161. And the

  1162. third word

  1163. is from

  1164. the slave

  1165. market,

  1166. it's

  1167. redemption.

  1168. it's

  1169. Jesus who

  1170. has broken

  1171. the chains,

  1172. broken the

  1173. chains of

  1174. slavery,

  1175. slavery to

  1176. sin and

  1177. selfishness and

  1178. individualism and

  1179. the judgment of

  1180. God.

  1181. Jesus has

  1182. broken the

  1183. chains of

  1184. bondage and

  1185. brought us

  1186. home to a

  1187. master who

  1188. makes us part

  1189. of his

  1190. family.

  1191. This is what

  1192. Jesus has done

  1193. for us,

  1194. this is what

  1195. the cross

  1196. achieves for

  1197. us,

  1198. and what

  1199. should we

  1200. do?

  1201. we're

  1202. enslaved to

  1203. boasting about

  1204. Jesus.

  1205. Verse 30,

  1206. therefore as

  1207. it is written,

  1208. it's written in

  1209. Jeremiah,

  1210. let him who

  1211. boasts,

  1212. boast in the

  1213. Lord.

  1214. And so

  1215. friends,

  1216. we're not the

  1217. perfect liberty

  1218. church,

  1219. doing whatever

  1220. we want to

  1221. do that makes

  1222. us happy,

  1223. but we have

  1224. perfect liberty

  1225. in Jesus,

  1226. a perfect

  1227. liberty that

  1228. serves Christ

  1229. and serves

  1230. each other.

  1231. We have

  1232. been set

  1233. free and

  1234. empowered to

  1235. do what we

  1236. cannot do,

  1237. that is to

  1238. serve Christ

  1239. and to serve

  1240. each other.

  1241. And 1

  1242. Corinthians calls

  1243. this church to

  1244. do what Jesus

  1245. called his

  1246. disciples to do

  1247. when he says

  1248. to them in Luke

    Luke 9:23

  1249. chapter 9,

  1250. verse 23,

  1251. if anyone would

  1252. come after me,

  1253. let him deny

  1254. himself, take

  1255. up his cross

  1256. daily and follow

  1257. me.

  1258. That's what

  1259. Paul's calling

  1260. the church of

  1261. Corinth to do.

  1262. You see,

  1263. Christ died to

  1264. save us from

  1265. hell, not to

  1266. save us from

  1267. the cross.

  1268. He died so

  1269. that we could

  1270. be glorified,

  1271. but not to

  1272. keep us from

  1273. being crucified.

  1274. crucified.

  1275. The cross of

  1276. Christ is not

  1277. merely a

  1278. past place

  1279. of substitution.

  1280. It is also

  1281. a present place

  1282. of daily

  1283. execution for

  1284. the Christian

  1285. to die

  1286. to self.

  1287. And so,

  1288. 930

  1289. congregation,

  1290. it is only

  1291. by looking to

  1292. the crucified

  1293. Jesus and

  1294. taking up your

  1295. cross will

  1296. you in a

  1297. couple of

  1298. weeks walk

  1299. willingly down

  1300. to Chatswood

  1301. Club in order

  1302. to do church

  1303. without grumbling.

  1304. It's only the

  1305. cross of Christ

  1306. that will allow you

  1307. to do that,

1308. to do it for the

  1309. sake of others.

  1310. When Christ

  1311. died on the

  1312. cross for

  1313. sinners,

  1314. he not only

  1315. stood in my

  1316. place doing

  1317. what I could

  1318. never do,

  1319. that is,

  1320. forgiving my

  1321. own sin,

  1322. but he also

  1323. showed me

  1324. what I must

  1325. do if I

  1326. would save

  1327. my life,

  1328. namely to

  1329. take up my

  1330. own cross

  1331. and to join

  1332. him on the

  1333. Calvary Road

  1334. and die

  1335. to self.

  1336. And so I

  1337. beg of you

  1338. today,

  1339. don't treat

  1340. the cross

  1341. as a historic

  1342. relic.

  1343. it is the

  1344. very power

  1345. of God

  1346. to change

  1347. everything in

  1348. your life

  1349. and especially

  1350. the power to

  1351. change our

  1352. inclination to

  1353. make much of

  1354. ourselves.

  1355. If you would

  1356. be his

  1357. disciple,

  1358. if you would

  1359. save your

  1360. life and not

  1361. lose it,

  1362. take up your

  1363. cross and

  1364. treasure Jesus

  1365. together.

  1366. Amen.
