  1. I think I don't fit the image of the person who normally stands at the front of a wedding

  2. and I think there's a novelty in that for people.

  3. And so I seem to get a lot of phone calls from people saying,

  4. can you come and do our wedding because they think that I'll be fun.

  5. I don't know that that's actually true, but there's an assumption there

  6. that until my hair is entirely grey, and it is getting there,

  7. but until it's entirely grey, they just assume that I'll be fun.

  8. But it's also one of the most challenging things I do in my job

  9. because when it comes to weddings,

  10. there are a lot of different people involved

  11. with a lot of different ideas about how things should happen.

  12. If you've ever been to a wedding rehearsal, perhaps it was your own,

  13. perhaps it was that of your child or relative,

  14. it's amazing how you can be standing there

  15. and the idea that the bride and groom have for how their big day should go

  16. is not necessarily the same as the idea that the mother of the bride

  17. has about how the day should go

  18. or the mother of the groom or the grandparent of the bride.

  19. There could be 15 different expectations of what's supposed to happen.

  20. And deep down, I know that there's certain things that I have to do

  21. to make sure they get married by the end of the day.

  22. And so I've got people at the front telling me,

  23. be fun, be relaxed.

  24. We want it to be really enjoyable.

  25. And then I've got the person in the second row telling me,

  26. it's a serious occasion.

  27. You've got to focus.

  28. Don't be so flippant about going through things.

  29. And there's all these different people telling me what to do.

  30. And so instead of being a joyful occasion,

  31. I'm so nervous about offending all these people

  32. that I end up just going into my shell

  33. and I don't really know what's going on.

  34. I'm just staring at the page,

  35. getting my words out and signing the bit of paper.

  36. Weddings are supposed to be exciting,

  37. even for me when I'm standing at the front of it.

  38. But when there's so many different expectations,

  39. you can become so scared that you're not really sure what to do.

  40. And last week, Chris opened up 1 Corinthians 8 for us

  41. and encouraged us that the freedom we have in Christ

  42. should not be used lovelessly.

  43. We shouldn't use it in a way that bears on the conscience

  44. of our brothers and sisters.

  45. But there's a risk for us when we hear a message like that.

  46. The message isn't saying this,

  47. but there's a risk that what we suddenly do

  48. is instead of feeling free,

  49. we feel trapped by the consciences of everyone around us.

  50. We were having a conversation in our community group

  51. during the week and we're saying,

  52. well, what if one person thinks I should do this

  53. and then another person thinks I should do this?

  54. And they're opposite things.

  55. How do I decide?

  56. And then you end up living your life not as somebody who's free,

  57. but as somebody who's scared and worried

  58. about always doing what everybody else wants you to do.

  59. And so thankfully, chapter 8 isn't everything

  60. that Paul says about our freedom in Jesus.

  61. And so in chapter 9, Paul wants to point to his own example

  62. of rights that are his that the Corinthians don't have

  63. so that we might understand exactly what it looks like

  64. to use our freedom the correct way.

  65. Because the question that we need to ask is,

  66. we're free.

  67. Last week, we were encouraged to give up our rights,

  68. but sometimes we actually have to stand and claim our freedom.

  69. But when do you do which?

  70. When do you give up your right to serve your brother?

  71. And when do you stand for something that is true

  72. because they need to learn this truth?

  73. That's the question before us tonight,

  74. and so that is where Paul takes us in chapter 9.

  75. Paul opens up,

  76. am I not free?

  77. Am I not an apostle?

  78. Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?

  79. Paul has special rights because of the job that he does.

  80. He's a preacher of God's words.

  81. He's the one who planted this community in Corinthians.

  82. It doesn't exist if Paul doesn't go there

  83. and teach them about Jesus.

  84. He's their spiritual father,

  85. and so he has a right to get financial support from them.

  86. That's not a weird thing.

  87. That's normal for people who plant churches

  88. or who are religious leaders in this age.

  89. And so Paul is entitled to take things from him,

  90. take things from the church, but he doesn't.

  91. But the reason he doesn't is what's important.

  92. He doesn't choose to go without their money

  93. because he's worried about what they think.

  94. He doesn't choose to go without their money

  95. because they're pressuring him

  96. that it's a bad idea to take money.

  97. In fact, there's a clue in here

  98. that some of the people thought he was a dodgy apostle

  99. because he wasn't taking money.

  100. They are of the attitude that, you know,

  101. you get what you pay for,

  102. and so if we're not paying for this guy,

  103. maybe he's not so impressive after all.

  104. But Paul is really committed to denying something

  105. that he's entitled to.

  106. Why?

  107. Not because what they want.

  108. There's a principle that's dictating

  109. how Paul uses his freedom.

  110. There's a grid that he uses to answer that question,

  111. when do I hold on to my rights

  112. and when do I deny them for the sake of my brother?

  113. Paul has a single agenda on display

  114. in these chapters here.

  115. His freedom is committed to a singular purpose,

  116. and it's there in verse 12.

  117. Second half.

  118. But we do not use this right.

  119. On the contrary, we put up with anything

  120. rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

  121. We put up with anything

  122. rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

  123. Notice that that word there, hinder,

  124. it's not obstacle, it's not barrier,

  125. it's the really general word

  126. that includes anything

  127. that might even slow down

  128. the progress of the gospel.

  129. If there's something that Paul could do

  130. and still eventually it would work out for good,

  131. but it's the long way around,

  132. he doesn't want to do that.

  133. He's so committed to being effective

  134. with the gospel,

  135. to being efficient with the gospel,

  136. to reaching as many people as possible

  137. with the gospel,

  138. that he will put up with anything

  139. rather than be a hindrance

  140. in any way, shape or form.

  141. We know that there's no issue

  142. with Paul taking money.

  143. As a gospel worker.

  144. Here he says,

  145. it's my entitlement.

  146. The other apostles are doing it.

  147. He says that Peter is doing it.

  148. It's a normal thing.

  149. In fact, in the letter to Philippians,

  150. which Paul writes to another church

  151. he's planted,

  152. he spends a bunch of time

  153. commending them

  154. for how generous they've been

  155. and how great it is

  156. and how encouraged he is

  157. that they're giving money.

  158. Money is not the problem.

  159. It's not an issue of right or wrong

  160. here when it comes to rights.

  161. The issue is,

  162. it's going to be a hindrance

  163. for the gospel.

  164. Paul would rather get a second job

  165. and work nights

  166. to make sure

  167. that money doesn't complicate

  168. the relationship he has

  169. with the Corinthians.

  170. He would rather work harder

  171. than maybe he has to

  172. to ensure that no one

  173. that he's preaching to

  174. feels like they have

  175. some sense of ownership.

  176. For the Corinthians,

  177. if they were giving money to Paul,

  178. it would have been like

  179. Paul was their employee.

  180. And so there might have been

  181. the temptation for them

  182. to try and tell him

  183. what he should be saying.

  184. There might have been

  185. the temptation for Paul

  186. to not to say the hard words

  187. when he needed to say it.

  188. And so to make sure

  189. that the gospel gets heard,

  190. no strings attached,

  191. he's willing to take

  192. an extra job

  193. on top of caring

  194. for this group of people

  195. and being a missionary

  196. and doing all these other things

  197. because he wants the gospel

  198. to be free of charge.

  199. So last week,

  200. our freedom is not to be misused.

  201. Last week,

  202. we need to be careful

  203. that we don't cause others to sin

  204. with the freedom

  205. that we have in Jesus.

  206. But this week,

  207. Paul is showing us

  208. that our freedom has a direction.

  209. It has an offensive.

  210. It has a purpose

  211. that we can be committed to.

  212. It's in the positive.

  213. And in verse 19,

  214. he makes it explicit.

  215. Though I am free

  216. and belong to no man,

  217. I make myself a slave to everyone

  218. to win as many as possible.

  219. This is the consuming desire for Paul.

  220. This is what it means

  221. to live for the gospel

  222. as the priority.

  223. He wants to see people

  224. come to know Jesus.

  225. And not just a few,

  226. he wants as many as possible

  227. to know the hope that he has.

  228. This trumps every other thing

  229. that matters in his life.

  230. Every other desire that he has,

  231. this comes first.

  232. Paul told us in chapter 7

  233. that marriage is good,

  234. that a wife is good,

  235. and yet he chooses not to have one

  236. because he believes

  237. that he can be more effective

  238. for the gospel without one.

  239. Chooses to give up something good

  240. that he affirms

  241. because without a wife,

  242. he believes that he can be more effective

  243. to see more people saved.

  244. His agenda is this above all else,

  245. to win as many as possible.

  246. The freedom that we have in Jesus

  247. has a purpose.

  248. It's not a blank check

  249. for you to do whatever you want

  250. in your life.

  251. It is a gift from God

  252. that is directed.

  253. And so I wonder,

  254. when you got up this morning

  255. and you were getting dressed,

  256. did you ask yourself the question,

  257. will these clothes

  258. help me win people to Jesus?

  259. When you were trying to decide

  260. what job you might get,

  261. maybe when you're choosing

  262. uni courses or school subjects,

  263. did you ask the question,

  264. will this help me win people to Jesus?

  265. When you were deciding

  266. who you would date,

  267. who you would marry,

  268. whether or not you would date,

  269. whether or not you would get married,

  270. did you ask the question,

  271. will this help me win people to Jesus?

  272. Now, it might sound like

  273. I'm being dramatic or excessive.

  274. Surely my clothes aren't that important.

  275. But you've got to understand,

  276. this is the only question.

  277. This is the first question.

  278. The only earthly structure

  279. that will last for eternity

  280. is the church.

  281. The only thing that will last

  282. beyond this life

  283. is the community of God's people.

  284. It's Christ's bride.

  285. And so it is infinitely more valuable

  286. than will I look good in these clothes?

  287. It is infinitely more valuable

  288. than will I be happy

  289. with this girlfriend,

  290. boyfriend, husband, wife.

  291. It is infinitely more valuable

  292. than will this job pay me enough

  293. or satisfy me?

  294. More important is,

  295. will this help me win

  296. as many as possible?

  297. That is the purpose

  298. for which Christ has died and risen.

  299. It is the purpose

  300. for the freedom that we have.

  301. Paul's agenda,

  302. personally,

  303. and his desire

  304. for the church in Corinth,

  305. and our desire here at St. Paul's

  306. is that we would be driven

  307. to live out

  308. our freedom like this.

  309. That we would be marked

  310. as people who care

  311. more than anything else,

  312. that at the end of our lives

  313. we will have been poured out

  314. and won

  315. as many

  316. as possible.

  317. This section,

  318. chapters 8 and 9 and 10,

  319. culminate in chapter 11,

  320. verse 1.

  321. If you've got your Bible open,

  322. have a quick look.

  323. It says this.

  324. Paul finishes this big rant

  325. about the freedom

  326. that he has in Jesus

  327. when he says,

  328. follow my example

  329. as I follow the example

  330. of Christ.

  331. Paul is leading the charge

  332. for the Corinthians.

  333. He's saying,

  334. if you're not sure

  335. what this looks like,

  336. have a look at my life.

  337. Look at what I do.

  338. But more than that,

  339. this is what Jesus did

  340. with his life.

  341. It's what Rob was praying

  342. just a second ago.

  343. Jesus was entitled

  344. to so much more

  345. than what he experienced

  346. in his earthly life.

  347. But he made choices

  348. to suffer

  349. and to sacrifice

  350. because his agenda

  351. was to give his life

  352. so that some people

  353. would be saved.

  354. He spent time

  355. with the people

  356. that were controversial,

  357. with the people

  358. that we might have found

  359. it difficult to love

  360. because his agenda was

  361. to save as many

  362. as possible.

  363. It's his example

  364. that we're called

  365. to follow.

  366. We have been freed

  367. to live like Jesus.

  368. Paul is unpacking

  369. in this chapter

  370. what it looks like

  371. to embrace our freedom

  372. and to use it

  373. the way that God

  374. designed for us.

  375. So that's the answer

  376. to the question

  377. we had at the beginning.

  378. When do I deny my rights

  379. for the sake of my brother

  380. or sister

  381. and when do I stand

  382. on my rights

  383. because truth matters?

  384. Well, you ask

  385. which one will be

  386. more beneficial

  387. for the gospel?

  388. Which one will help me more

  389. to win people to Jesus?

  390. There will be times

  391. when denying your rights

  392. will be more beneficial

  393. for your brother or sister

  394. to hear the gospel.

  395. There will be times

  396. when it is good and right

  397. for you to sacrifice

  398. so that others

  399. will come to know Jesus

  400. but there will also be times

  401. where you need to stand up

  402. and say I am free

  403. to do this in Jesus

  404. so that the people around you

  405. can come to understand

  406. what it means

  407. that Jesus has died

  408. and washed you

  409. and made you clean

  410. and that nothing can undo

  411. what he's done on the cross.

  412. And the question

  413. you've got to be asking is

  414. which of these

  415. will help me win people

  416. to Jesus?

  417. Whether you're getting dressed,

  418. picking a job,

  419. picking a suburb

  420. to live in,

  421. whatever it is,

  422. Jesus is the thing

  423. that matters.

  424. Our freedom is ours

  425. but for the goal

  426. that others would know

  427. that freedom as well.

  428. That's God's agenda.

  429. He has called you

  430. and loved you

  431. and adopted you

  432. and accepted you

  433. and forgiven you

  434. so that others

  435. might be called

  436. and loved

  437. and adopted

  438. and forgiven.

  439. Jesus on the cross

  440. is the ultimate example

  441. of this.

  442. He is God.

  443. He has every right

  444. and every authority

  445. to take himself down

  446. from the cross.

  447. He has every right

  448. and every authority

  449. to command angels

  450. to come and lay waste

  451. to the soldiers

  452. that are in front of him

  453. but he chooses

  454. to stay there

  455. because that's necessary

  456. for any to be saved.

  457. He sacrifices his own

  458. because his goal,

  459. his purpose

  460. shapes his action.

  461. For us as a church

  462. our goal is

  463. that we would save

  464. as many as possible.

  465. Our goal as individuals

  466. needs to be

  467. that we will save

  468. as many as possible

  469. and so the question

  470. we need to wrestle with

  471. is,

  472. is that goal

  473. shaping who we are?

  474. Is that goal shaping

  475. how we spend our time

  476. and our energy?

  477. This is what our vision

  478. statement is about.

  479. Here at St Paul's

  480. we want to share

  481. God's heart

  482. to see lost people

  483. come to know him,

  484. to see dead people

  485. come to life.

  486. We want to know Jesus

  487. and treasure Jesus

  488. and represent Jesus

  489. in such a way

  490. that God gets glory

  491. and people find joy

  492. as they find freedom

  493. and then they get

  494. to know Jesus

  495. and treasure Jesus

  496. and represent Jesus

  497. so that others

  498. will come to find joy

  499. in him as well.

  500. Our goal as a church,

  501. our goal as Christians

  502. must dictate

  503. what we do

  504. and how we live

  505. and so I want to suggest

  506. two ways

  507. that we need to

  508. particularly work on

  509. for us as a church

  510. and I have to say

  511. for me personally

  512. and so maybe for you as well.

  513. Have a look at verse 19

  514. with me.

  515. Though I am free

  516. and belong to no man,

  517. I make myself a slave

  518. to everyone

  519. to win as many as possible.

  520. To the Jews

  521. I became like a Jew

  522. to win the Jews.

  523. To those under the law

  524. I became like one

  525. under the law

  526. though I myself

  527. am not under the law

  528. so as to win those

  529. under the law.

  530. To those not having the law

  531. I became like one

  532. not having the law

  533. though I am not free

  534. from God's law

  535. but I am under Christ's law

  536. so as to win those

  537. not having the law.

  538. To the weak

  539. I became weak

  540. to win the weak.

  541. I have become all things

  542. to all men

  543. so that by all possible means

  544. I might save some.

  545. There's the agenda again.

  546. By all possible means

  547. I might save some.

  548. And how does he do it?

  549. By becoming all things

  550. to all men.

  551. Two things that are going

  552. to help us begin

  553. to even comprehend

  554. what that might look like.

  555. The first thing is

  556. we need our identity

  557. redefined.

  558. I don't know if you noticed

  559. there in verse 20

  560. Paul says to the Jews

  561. I became like a Jew

  562. to win the Jews.

  563. Paul is a Jew.

  564. Paul is a Pharisee.

  565. Paul is the poster boy

  566. for being Jewish.

  567. If they wanted to advertise

  568. to recruit Jews

  569. Paul would be on the poster.

  570. He ticks every box for them.

  571. He's born in the right month.

  572. He's circumcised

  573. on the right day.

  574. He raves about this stuff

  575. in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  576. But for him

  577. now that he knows Jesus

  578. his identity

  579. is so radically different

  580. that his Jewish heritage

  581. is second at best.

  582. First and more importantly

  583. he considers himself

  584. a Christian.

  585. He considers himself

  586. forgiven.

  587. He considers himself

  588. somebody who is defined

  589. by the one

  590. who died on the cross

  591. for him.

  592. See until we know

  593. who we are

  594. we won't be sure

  595. which bits

  596. we're supposed to hold on to

  597. and which bits

  598. we let go of.

  599. If we want to be able

  600. to be flexible

  601. if we want to be able

  602. to serve the community

  603. around us

  604. then the first part

  605. is we need to soak

  606. under God's word

  607. and hear the gospel

  608. over and over

  609. and understand

  610. that we are forgiven

  611. completely and irreversibly

  612. that everything

  613. that we brought

  614. to the cross

  615. has been left

  616. at the cross

  617. and dealt with

  618. and paid for

  619. that there's nothing

  620. that we can actually add

  621. that will become

  622. an extra barrier.

  623. We are no longer

  624. identified as Chinese

  625. or Filipino

  626. or Malaysian

  627. or Australian

  628. or English

  629. or whatever we might be.

  630. We are no longer

  631. defined by the job

  632. that we have.

  633. We are no longer

  634. defined by the paycheck

  635. that we earn

  636. by the suburb

  637. that we live in

  638. by the marks

  639. we get in our exams

  640. by the language

  641. that we speak.

  642. That all comes

  643. second and third

  644. and fifth

  645. and thirtieth

  646. and whatever else.

  647. First and foremost

  648. Jesus has died

  649. for us.

  650. We are Christians.

  651. If you are following

  652. Jesus the thing

  653. that defines you

  654. is him.

  655. He is the centre

  656. of who you are.

  657. He is the thing

  658. that defines

  659. your status

  660. your position

  661. and so you need

  662. to be okay

  663. to let go

  664. of some of the things

  665. that used to define you

  666. whether that be

  667. your ethnic background

  668. whether that be

  669. your status

  670. in the community

  671. because of the job

  672. that you hold

  673. or the title

  674. that you have

  675. you need to be willing

  676. to let go of that

  677. because the centre

  678. the thing that matters

  679. is the gospel

  680. is Jesus.

  681. We live in Chatswood.

  682. I am not Chinese.

  683. I could not be

  684. less Chinese

  685. but our suburb

  686. is full of Chinese people

  687. who don't know Jesus

  688. and so I need to let go

  689. of the fact

  690. that I'm Aussie

  691. and Bogan.

  692. I need to let go

  693. of the fact

  694. that my only food choice

  695. when I walk

  696. into Westfield

  697. is McDonald's

  698. and I need to be

  699. comfortable

  700. to stretch myself

  701. culturally

  702. because I'm not

  703. Australian first

  704. I'm Christian first

  705. and being Christian

  706. and being free

  707. in Christ

  708. means I'm defined

  709. by a need

  710. and a burning desire

  711. to see people

  712. one to Christ

  713. and I'm not going

  714. to be able to do that

  715. if I'm not willing

  716. to go where they are

  717. if I'm not willing

  718. to spend time

  719. doing the things

  720. that they want to do.

  721. I was reading this week

  722. about Hudson Taylor

  723. who founded the China

  724. Inland Mission

  725. he was a missionary

  726. and when he was there

  727. he'd spent time

  728. reasonably ineffectively

  729. trying to share the gospel

  730. and he decided

  731. that a helpful step

  732. would be for him

  733. to grow his hair long

  734. and put it in a braid

  735. to wear the Chinese clothes

  736. that the men around him

  737. were wearing

  738. and to start eating

  739. Chinese food.

  740. When he did that

  741. the other missionaries

  742. around him

  743. made fun of him

  744. they basically thought

  745. he'd lost the plot

  746. he'd let go

  747. of the gospel

  748. he'd become too much

  749. like these people

  750. who are devil worshippers

  751. and he was going

  752. to go to hell as well

  753. but he knew

  754. what mattered

  755. he knew that the Bible

  756. didn't tell him

  757. what clothes to wear

  758. or what haircut to have

  759. or what food to eat

  760. the Bible told him

  761. that Jesus had died

  762. for him

  763. that he was free

  764. in Christ

  765. that obeying

  766. Jesus was what

  767. what mattered

  768. and so he could gladly

  769. and willingly

  770. and joyfully

  771. sacrifice everything

  772. that he'd known

  773. culturally up to that

  774. point in his life

  775. and adapt

  776. so that others

  777. might come to know

  778. Jesus

  779. we need to know

  780. what our identity is

  781. so that we have security

  782. as we stretch ourselves

  783. into places

  784. where we might be

  785. uncomfortable

  786. because the second thing

  787. we need to do

  788. if we're going to be

  789. all things to all men

  790. is we need to be

  791. culturally flexible

  792. one of the real strengths

  793. that we have as a church

  794. here is we're an

  795. Anglican church

  796. whether you know

  797. what that means or not

  798. is kind of irrelevant

  799. the good news is

  800. we've got a bunch of stuff

  801. which makes us

  802. really committed

  803. to the gospel of Jesus

  804. but the danger for us

  805. is because all those

  806. things are there for us

  807. and they've kind of

  808. done a lot of the hard work

  809. over the years of history

  810. to make sure we're

  811. committed to God's word

  812. it's easy for us

  813. to add our own hoops

  814. for people to jump through

  815. when they come to church

  816. it's easy for us

  817. to say when somebody

  818. comes to Chatswood

  819. walks into church

  820. off the street

  821. decides they want

  822. to follow Jesus

  823. it's great to have you

  824. let us now show you

  825. the rest of the things

  826. that you need to do

  827. to fit in with us

  828. let us tell you

  829. what clothes to wear

  830. let us tell you

  831. what music to listen to

  832. let us tell you

  833. what appropriate English is

  834. let us tell you

  835. how to sharpen your vocab

  836. so that you can belong

  837. with us here

  838. on the North Shore

  839. it's really easy

  840. for us to make people

  841. have to be like us

  842. have to do things

  843. the way that we do them

  844. even if they're not

  845. gospel issues

  846. we were talking about

  847. on Friday night at youth

  848. I wonder how comfortable

  849. we would be

  850. if somebody started

  851. attending our church

  852. who wasn't big

  853. on personal hygiene

  854. and smelled a bit

  855. would walk in

  856. with bare foot

  857. every week

  858. had a massive mohawk

  859. was covered in tattoos

  860. and liked to smoke

  861. would you be comfortable

  862. with them coming

  863. and sitting next to you

  864. they love Jesus

  865. they're really excited

  866. to be a part of his people

  867. is it okay for you

  868. if they sit next to you

  869. every week

  870. or would you start

  871. letting them know

  872. how they can adjust

  873. their culture

  874. to actually fit in

  875. to actually be a part

  876. of God's church

  877. the Bible doesn't tell them

  878. they have to wear

  879. certain clothes

  880. doesn't tell them

  881. how regularly

  882. they have to bathe

  883. doesn't tell them

  884. whether or not

  885. to smoke cigarettes

  886. yet we add these hoops

  887. for people to jump through

  888. we take secondary things

  889. that are our culture

  890. and we make that

  891. what it means

  892. to be a Christian

  893. we live in a place

  894. that is hugely

  895. culturally diverse

  896. there are all sorts

  897. of people here

  898. who don't get

  899. how we work

  900. and so if we make

  901. our church family

  902. if you in your life

  903. expect people

  904. to be like you

  905. then you're putting up

  906. barriers

  907. to winning people

  908. you're putting up

  909. obstacles for people

  910. coming to Jesus

  911. one of the joys

  912. of being part

  913. of our church

  914. is that we are

  915. a diverse group

  916. of people

  917. but I wonder

  918. if sometimes

  919. you find yourself

  920. sitting here

  921. wishing that some

  922. of those diverse

  923. people were a bit

  924. more like you

  925. were more into

  926. doing church

  927. the way you like it

  928. liked the same music

  929. that you do

  930. I had to confess

  931. to our morning

  932. congregation

  933. this morning

  934. that I have been

  935. doing this

  936. in conversations

  937. with people

  938. in our church

  939. that we've had

  940. arguments about

  941. how we do

  942. our gatherings

  943. and when I say

  944. arguments

  945. I mean loving

  946. rigorous discussions

  947. there's been a few

  948. of those

  949. over the last few

  950. years

  951. with godly

  952. brothers and

  953. sisters

  954. but reality is

  955. there's been

  956. points where

  957. I have called

  958. my preference

  959. the preference

  960. I have called

  961. my cultural idea

  962. of what's good

  963. when we gather

  964. the biblical idea

  965. of what's good

  966. when we gather

  967. and I wonder

  968. if you ever

  969. do the same

  970. if you think

  971. certain songs

  972. are more glorifying

  973. to god

  974. if you think

  975. a certain type

  976. of church

  977. is more glorifying

  978. to god

  979. we need to be

  980. culturally flexible

  981. because we know

  982. who we are

  983. in Jesus

  984. and so long

  985. as we get

  986. reminded as a

  987. gathered community

  988. that it's him

  989. alone

  990. who has died

  991. and risen

  992. as long as we

  993. get reminded

  994. that it's his

  995. glory that we

  996. live for

  997. then maybe we

  998. need to let go

  999. of some of the

  1000. other things

  1001. that make us

  1002. feel comfortable

  1003. here at church

  1004. maybe we need

  1005. to be okay

  1006. if the chairs

  1007. are in a circle

  1008. next week

  1009. when we get

  1010. here

  1011. and not spend

  1012. the first hour

  1013. distracted by the

  1014. fact that it's

  1015. not how we

  1016. normally do it

  1017. now there is

  1018. a warning for

  1019. us here

  1020. because we're

  1021. not supposed to

  1022. be flexible to

  1023. the point where

  1024. there's a sin

  1025. involved

  1026. Paul says

  1027. to the Jews

  1028. I became like

  1029. a Jew

  1030. he doesn't say

  1031. to the adulterer

  1032. I became like

  1033. an adulterer

  1034. there are certain

  1035. things that are

  1036. cultural issues

  1037. that can be

  1038. given into

  1039. and then of

  1040. course there are

  1041. certain things

  1042. which are sin

  1043. and out of

  1044. love for Jesus

  1045. we never bend

  1046. on

  1047. that's why

  1048. it's important

  1049. to know

  1050. our identity

  1051. to remember

  1052. that when

  1053. Christ forgave

  1054. us and gave

  1055. us freedom

  1056. he gave us

  1057. a whole new

  1058. life

  1059. he gave us

  1060. a new

  1061. start

  1062. he gave us

  1063. a new

  1064. path

  1065. this is

  1066. the only

  1067. basis

  1068. on which

  1069. you should

  1070. assess

  1071. your life

  1072. personally

  1073. and our

  1074. life

  1075. corporately

  1076. I promise

  1077. you

  1078. that at

  1079. some point

  1080. in the future

  1081. we as a

  1082. church family

  1083. will do

  1084. something that

  1085. will make

  1086. you uncomfortable

  1087. I'm not

  1088. promising that

  1089. as my

  1090. desire

  1091. but in

  1092. this room

  1093. we don't

  1094. all like

  1095. exactly the

  1096. same stuff

  1097. but if

  1098. you're willing

  1099. to ask

  1100. the question

  1101. is this

  1102. good for

  1103. the gospel

  1104. and if

  1105. so I'm

  1106. going to

  1107. suffer

  1108. joyfully

  1109. so that we

  1110. might win

  1111. some

  1112. then we

  1113. will see

  1114. God work

  1115. fantastically

  1116. through us

  1117. if we

  1118. were willing

  1119. to say

  1120. my first

  1121. priority

  1122. when I

  1123. gather

  1124. is not

  1125. comfort

  1126. but the

  1127. gospel

  1128. going out

  1129. and people

  1130. being saved

  1131. this will

  1132. be a

  1133. welcoming

  1134. place for

  1135. anyone to

  1136. walk into

  1137. regardless of

  1138. where they're

  1139. from what

  1140. their background

  1141. is if they've

  1142. ever been to

  1143. church before

  1144. because we

  1145. will be

  1146. pursuing more

  1147. than anything

  1148. else that

  1149. the gospel

  1150. stays the

  1151. main thing

  1152. we'll be

  1153. letting go of

  1154. our preferences

  1155. and we'll be

  1156. welcoming people

  1157. like Jesus

  1158. does exactly

  1159. how they

  1160. are so

  1161. that they

  1162. can be

  1163. forgiven and

  1164. transformed and

  1165. know the

  1166. freedom that

  1167. we know

  1168. we need to

  1169. be consumed

  1170. by God's

  1171. desire we

  1172. need to let

  1173. go of our

  1174. commitment to

  1175. comfort and

  1176. we need to be

  1177. willing to

  1178. sacrifice our

  1179. rights no

  1180. matter how

  1181. much it

  1182. hurts so

  1183. that others

  1184. may come to

  1185. know Jesus

  1186. Paul gets

  1187. really really

  1188. visual here in

  1189. these last few

  1190. verses in

  1191. verse 24 he

  1192. says do you

  1193. not know that

  1194. in a race all

  1195. the runners run

  1196. but only one

  1197. gets the prize

  1198. everyone who

  1199. competes in the

  1200. games goes into

  1201. strict training

  1202. they do it to

  1203. get a crown that

  1204. will not last

1205. but we do it to

  1206. get a crown that

  1207. will last forever

  1208. therefore I do

  1209. not run like a

  1210. man running

  1211. aimlessly I do

  1212. not fight like a

  1213. man beating the

  1214. air no I beat

  1215. my body and I

  1216. make it my slave

  1217. so that after I

  1218. have preached to

  1219. others I myself

  1220. will not be

  1221. disqualified for the

  1222. prize this will

  1223. not happen

  1224. accidentally if

  1225. you're not

  1226. consciously thinking

  1227. how can I be

  1228. flexible for the

  1229. sake of others

  1230. if you're not

  1231. actively thinking

  1232. how can I be

  1233. more conscious

  1234. of the cultures

  1235. that surround me

  1236. where I live

  1237. where I work

  1238. then you won't

  1239. be you default

  1240. to what is

  1241. comfortable you'll

  1242. default to people

  1243. who are like you

  1244. and you'll miss

  1245. out on an

  1246. opportunity to

  1247. share the gospel

  1248. with a whole bunch

  1249. of people who

  1250. don't know life

  1251. and don't know

  1252. hope

  1253. are you willing

  1254. to beat your

  1255. body and make

  1256. it your slave

  1257. for the sake of

  1258. the gospel

  1259. are you willing

  1260. to give up some

  1261. really familiar

  1262. habit so that

  1263. someone can meet

  1264. Jesus

  1265. are you willing

  1266. to give up

  1267. dressing a certain

  1268. way

  1269. are you willing

  1270. to give up

  1271. hanging out at a

  1272. certain place

  1273. are you willing

  1274. to give up a

  1275. kind of music

  1276. that you like

  1277. if that's going

  1278. to give you

  1279. access to some

  1280. more people

  1281. who don't know

  1282. Jesus

  1283. are you willing

  1284. to try some

  1285. food that

  1286. disgusts you

  1287. right now

  1288. are you willing

  1289. to go to some

  1290. shops that you've

  1291. never been

  1292. interested in going

  1293. to before

  1294. in order that

  1295. people may come

  1296. to meet Jesus

  1297. this will require

  1298. honest reflection

  1299. for us

  1300. none of us

  1301. came in here

  1302. tonight thinking

  1303. that we were

  1304. culturally narrow

  1305. none of us

  1306. came in here

  1307. thinking that we

  1308. were not open

  1309. to the people

  1310. around us

  1311. but the challenge

  1312. is there for all

  1313. of us there

  1314. could be more

  1315. and so I wonder

  1316. will you reflect

  1317. honestly on

  1318. where can I

  1319. remove some

  1320. barriers to the

  1321. gospel

  1322. where can I

  1323. fix my eyes

  1324. on the prize

  1325. so that more

  1326. will be won

  1327. to Christ

  1328. the question

  1329. is simple

  1330. it's not is this

  1331. right or wrong

  1332. that's an easy

  1333. question to dodge

  1334. the question

  1335. is does this

  1336. help the gospel

  1337. or does this

  1338. hinder the gospel

  1339. they're the only

  1340. two categories

  1341. there is no

  1342. neutral

  1343. if it doesn't

  1344. help

  1345. then by definition

  1346. it hinders

  1347. because you're

  1348. wasting energy

  1349. on something

  1350. that's not

  1351. helping

  1352. the question

  1353. is not right

  1354. or wrong

  1355. the question

  1356. is does this

  1357. help the gospel

  1358. or does this

  1359. hinder the gospel

  1360. the great

  1361. encouragement

  1362. of this passage

  1363. is that as

  1364. Paul slaps

  1365. us in the

  1366. face and

  1367. says come

  1368. on try

  1369. harder and

  1370. beat yourself

  1371. beat your body

  1372. into being a

  1373. slave run

  1374. at the prize

  1375. there is this

  1376. huge encouragement

  1377. in verse 23

  1378. Paul says I

  1379. do all this

  1380. for the sake

  1381. of the gospel

  1382. that I may

  1383. share in its

  1384. blessings

  1385. did you get

  1386. that

  1387. Paul sacrifices

  1388. Paul preaches

  1389. Paul travels

  1390. Paul tries as

  1391. hard as he can

  1392. to fit into

  1393. whatever culture

  1394. he is among

  1395. not so that

  1396. they share in

  1397. the benefits

  1398. he wants that

  1399. to happen

  1400. but he says

  1401. here that he

  1402. does all of

  1403. this that I

  1404. may share in

  1405. its blessings

  1406. see for Paul

  1407. sharing the

  1408. gospel and

  1409. experiencing the

  1410. gospel are one

  1411. thing it's not

  1412. that we become

  1413. a Christian and

  1414. are forgiven and

  1415. then a task

  1416. we're given is

  1417. evangelism for

  1418. Paul to hear the

  1419. gospel is to

  1420. share the gospel

  1421. there is no

  1422. separation for

  1423. him he says

  1424. it again in

  1425. verse 27

  1426. I beat my

  1427. body I make

  1428. it my slave so

  1429. after I have

  1430. preached to

  1431. others I

  1432. myself will not

  1433. be disqualified

  1434. for the prize

  1435. for him the

  1436. evidence of

  1437. genuinely knowing

  1438. the freedom that

  1439. is in Christ

  1440. is having your

  1441. priorities so

  1442. shaped that what

  1443. you care about

  1444. more than anything

  1445. else is winning

  1446. as many as

  1447. possible there's

  1448. no separation

  1449. for him and so

  1450. he finds great

  1451. joy in the

  1452. sacrifices that he

  1453. makes

  1454. in the sacrifice

  1455. of financial gain

  1456. in the sacrifice

  1457. of having a wife

  1458. to travel with

  1459. him he finds

  1460. joy because in

  1461. making those

  1462. choices he grabs

  1463. hold of Jesus

  1464. even tighter

  1465. the things that

  1466. could have

  1467. defined him he

  1468. lets go and

  1469. embraces all of

  1470. Jesus with

  1471. everything that he

  1472. has

  1473. the great

  1474. blessing of

  1475. being a follower

  1476. of Jesus is

  1477. that as he

  1478. calls us to

  1479. sacrifice as he

  1480. calls us to

  1481. take up our

  1482. cross as he

  1483. calls us to

  1484. live life in

  1485. the footsteps

  1486. of Jesus

  1487. every cost that

  1488. we pay is

  1489. far surpassed in

  1490. the blessing of

  1491. knowing Jesus as

  1492. our Lord

  1493. everything that we

  1494. give up is far

  1495. surpassed in the

  1496. gain of having

  1497. the prize that

  1498. waits for us at

  1499. the end

  1500. denying your

  1501. rights is the

  1502. gospel

  1503. gospel

  1504. that's who

  1505. Jesus was

  1506. that's who

  1507. Paul was

  1508. and until we

  1509. are willing to

  1510. let go of what

  1511. is rightfully

  1512. ours and take

  1513. hold of this

  1514. mission then

  1515. we're following

  1516. something other

  1517. than the gospel

  1518. of Jesus

  1519. because this is

  1520. who he is

  1521. this is what

  1522. he's called us

  1523. to

  1524. in Christ you

  1525. are free

  1526. you are

  1527. forgiven

  1528. but you are

  1529. free for a

  1530. purpose

  1531. you are free

  1532. that others

  1533. may come to

  1534. know that

  1535. same freedom

  1536. and so let me

  1537. finish with the

  1538. call of verse

  1539. 19

  1540. though I am

  1541. free and belong

  1542. to no man

  1543. I make myself

  1544. a slave to

  1545. everyone

  1546. to win as

  1547. many as

  1548. possible

  1549. that is God's

  1550. design for your

  1551. life

  1552. that is God's

  1553. desire for us

  1554. as a church

  1555. that as many

  1556. as possible

  1557. would come to

  1558. know him

  1559. because of the

  1560. way that we

  1561. live

  1562. let's pray

  1563. father God

  1564. we want to

  1565. confess that

  1566. there are many

  1567. things in our

  1568. life that are

  1569. there because

  1570. they're comfortable

  1571. they're there

  1572. because we

  1573. haven't even

  1574. asked the

  1575. question how

  1576. does this

  1577. impact on

  1578. our gospel

  1579. effectiveness

  1580. we want to

  1581. thank you that

  1582. Jesus has

  1583. died and

  1584. Jesus is

  1585. alive and

  1586. our freedom

  1587. has been

  1588. bought at

  1589. the highest

  1590. price

  1591. God help

  1592. us not to

  1593. take it for

  1594. granted

  1595. help us not

  1596. to get

  1597. distracted into

  1598. thinking that

  1599. forgiveness was

  1600. the end game

  1601. give us eyes to

  1602. see the path that

  1603. you are marking

  1604. out in front of

  1605. us

  1606. give us hearts so

  1607. consumed with

  1608. love for you

  1609. and desire to

  1610. see people saved

  1611. that we will

  1612. joyfully do

  1613. whatever it

  1614. takes

  1615. give us eyes to

  1616. see the

  1617. cultures around

  1618. us

  1619. give us love

  1620. for them that

  1621. we might adapt

  1622. and be flexible

  1623. that we might

  1624. remove all

  1625. human barriers

  1626. from people

  1627. hearing your

  1628. message

  1629. God give us

  1630. words to say

  1631. and use us

  1632. to call people

  1633. into your

  1634. kingdom

  1635. into your

  1636. freedom

  1637. into this

  1638. hope

  1639. Father thank

  1640. you for

  1641. Jesus

  1642. our saviour

  1643. and our

  1644. king

  1645. Amen
