  1. 1 Corinthians 11, quick walk, two big sections.

  2. First section, verses 1 to 16.

  3. Second section, verses 17 to 34.

  4. And I wasn't even going to bother with the first section

  5. until we had our community group the other night.

  6. Thank you.

  7. That's my sign of authority.

  8. I forgot to have it on when I started this message.

  9. I want you to know that it's okay for me to be out the front.

  10. I'm operating under Steve's authority and the Archbishop's licence

  11. or something like that.

  12. We read the passage in our community group the other night.

  13. We had a great discussion and towards the end,

  14. somebody tentatively but also boldly said,

  15. when you hear this read, it's really hard

  16. for the hairs on the back of your neck not to stand on their end.

  17. And they were reflecting, I think some of the words used were

  18. that when we come to a passage like this,

  19. it sounds old-fashioned, it sounds fuddy-duddy,

  20. it sounds out of touch.

  21. And in some ways, and even in worse ways,

  22. for women, sounds like a considerable put-down.

  23. And we could go off and have a...

  24. You could talk heaps about all that

  25. without even looking at the passage.

  26. We've already found our positions,

  27. we know where we stand,

  28. and we're ready to interact with one another in our groups, aren't we?

  29. And we haven't even read the Bible any further.

  30. But what if he's dealing...

  31. I think he's dealing with problems in both places,

  32. but what we see in the first half,

  33. he says, verse 2,

  34. I praise you for remembering me in everything

  35. and for holding to the teachings

  36. just as I pass them on to you.

  37. He's been involved in tradition,

  38. the transmission of something which wasn't his,

  39. it was given to him,

  40. and he's tried to faithfully pass it on to them.

  41. And however they've handled it,

  42. he's saying, I really want to praise you for this.

  43. So the first half of chapter 11 is reasonably positive,

  44. and the second part is incredibly negative.

  45. Verse 17,

  46. In the following directives,

  47. I have no praise for you,

  48. for your meetings do more harm than good.

  49. So if we look at the first half,

  50. we're seeing they're praiseful,

  51. and we move into the second half,

  52. which we'll do in a minute,

  53. I have no praise for you.

  54. He's hot with anger

  55. for the way that the Christians in Corinth

  56. are behaving with regard to particular issues.

  57. So come back to women.

  58. We're not going to cover everything.

  59. We got a reaction in our community group the other night

  60. that sort of said,

  61. this just seems so out of touch.

  62. And yet what if,

  63. what if we looked around our group

  64. and we said, all of us have daughters.

  65. What would it take for our daughter

  66. to present shamefully out there in the community?

  67. If we were at a community gathering the football

  68. down in Westfield,

  69. if they took their tops off and walked around,

  70. would that be perceived as a shameful thing?

  71. And most of us would say,

  72. yeah, the whole of society would see that as shameful.

  73. And we added to it and said,

  74. yeah, well, even if they dressed really skimpily.

  75. And then we started to talk about,

  76. well, what about out the front of church?

  77. And we've got a woman speaking to us

  78. and her skirt's up, you know,

  79. halfway up her thighs

  80. and her cleavage is well down the middle

  81. and the guys are paying a tremendous amount of attention

  82. to everything that she's saying.

  83. There's something culturally inappropriate

  84. that gets in the way of the message.

  85. And I think there are some dynamics at play here

  86. that bear on that.

  87. And I'm saying it now

  88. because this is going to feed perhaps

  89. into some of the things

  90. that Sam might want to talk about tomorrow afternoon.

  91. What I want you to see in terms of the text,

  92. verse 4,

  93. every man who prays or prophesies

  94. with his head covered dishonours his head.

  95. So there's a presumption there

  96. that a man amongst in the church of God

  97. may be praying and prophesying,

  98. which is the forth telling of the word of God,

  99. bringing the word of God to bear.

  100. And he will present in a particular way

  101. and possibly reflects the Old Testament glory

  102. where Moses didn't have his head covered

  103. in the presence of God.

  104. But it may be wider than that

  105. in terms of Corinthian culture.

  106. And then verse 5, look really carefully.

  107. Every woman who prays or prophesies

  108. with her head uncovered dishonours her head.

  109. Now what have they both got in common?

  110. In both contexts,

  111. a man or a woman

  112. is praying

  113. or is prophesying

  114. in public.

  115. They're doing the same thing

  116. but they're presenting differently

  117. in the cultural context.

  118. And what if,

  119. and I think I've read this

  120. but I won't go to the cross on it

  121. because I might get contradicted,

  122. but what if in Corinth

  123. to be a woman

  124. out the front of the congregation

  125. with your head shaven

  126. said something about

  127. your social standing,

  128. maybe even your connection

  129. with prostitution

  130. or it said something

  131. about you as a woman

  132. in that setting,

  133. might that not get in the way

  134. of the prayer being prayed

  135. or the word of God

  136. being brought to bear

  137. in terms of prophecy?

  138. Now I don't think

  139. I want to go

  140. a lot further

  141. than that.

  142. There's obviously

  143. bucket loads

  144. that could be said

  145. and here's your opportunity

  146. to write your own questions

  147. down right now

  148. on your sheet

  149. and they can be brought

  150. back to panel

  151. tomorrow afternoon.

  152. That's the way we can deal

  153. with some of this stuff

  154. in this context.

  155. It's fantastic.

  156. But coming to the second half,

  157. verse 17,

  158. in the following directives

  159. I have no praise for you.

  160. Your meetings do more harm

  161. than good.

  162. So there's a big point

  163. that he's working

  164. from round about

  165. verse 17 to verse 22.

  166. He said,

  167. you come together

  168. in verse 20,

  169. when you come together

  170. it's not the Lord's supper

  171. you eat.

  172. For as you eat

  173. each of you

  174. goes ahead

  175. without waiting

  176. for anyone else.

  177. Would you mind

  178. paying attention to me?

  179. Like I can see

  180. everybody's eyes

  181. gone over there

  182. but I'd really like

  183. your eyes back here,

  184. okay?

  185. And in verse 21

  186. he literally says,

  187. you're not eating

  188. the Lord's supper,

  189. you're eating to self.

  190. You're doing

  191. your own stuff.

  192. And we know

  193. from what Steve's

  194. spoken about

  195. in the last talk

  196. that he's been

  197. talking to us

  198. about being a body

  199. and so when we talk

  200. about body

  201. in Christian life

  202. we're talking about

  203. the corporate life

  204. of the people of God.

  205. We are a body.

  206. We're a body

  207. gathered today

  208. and boy

  209. it's an exciting body

  210. to see gathered today

  211. and to be gathered

  212. in this way

  213. and that people

  214. have given time

  215. this morning

  216. to worship in this way.

  217. Just awesome.

  218. But he's saying

  219. to the Corinthians

  220. there's something

  221. about this gathering

  222. that's going on

  223. with you

  224. which is just out of

  225. what are you guys doing?

  226. We're just having

  227. lunch.

  228. We're having lunch.

  229. I did say bring lunch

  230. and I said

  231. there's some really nice wine

  232. on the table

  233. there's some fantastic chocolates

  234. and there's more stuff coming.

  235. Well it's going to be great

  236. to be able to share that

  237. in a minute

  238. and

  239. This is ours.

  240. This is ours.

  241. Ours.

  242. Well I don't care about

  243. the leaf and the carrot

  244. you can have that.

  245. It's no ordinary salad.

  246. It's no ordinary salad.

  247. So what else is in the box?

  248. The very best chicken.

  249. Okay.

  250. It's distracting

  251. isn't it?

  252. What was the word?

  253. He says

  254. verse 22

  255. or verse 21

  256. for as

  257. as you eat

  258. each of you

  259. goes ahead

  260. without

  261. waiting for anyone else

  262. and

  263. one remains hungry

  264. and another

  265. gets drunk

  266. Don't you have

  267. homes to eat

  268. and drink in

  269. or do you despise

  270. the church of God

  271. and humiliate

  272. those who have nothing

  273. and what shall I say

  274. to you?

  275. Certainly I shall not

  276. shall I praise you

  277. for this?

  278. Certainly not.

  279. And then he goes

  280. into those words

  281. that we know

  282. really well

  283. from the communion service

  284. he goes to a different body

  285. he moves from the body

  286. of Christ

  287. in terms of his people

  288. to the body

  289. of Christ himself

  290. and he says

  291. for I received

  292. from the Lord

  293. what I also passed

  294. on to you

  295. the Lord Jesus

  296. on the night

  297. he was betrayed

  298. took bread

  299. Passover meal

  300. remembrance

  301. to the time in Egypt

  302. the deliverance

  303. from the great salvation

  304. event of the Old Testament

  305. and he took bread

  306. and when he had given

  307. thanks he broke it

  308. and said

  309. this is my body

  310. which is for you

  311. do this in remembrance

  312. of me

  313. and in the same way

  314. after supper

  315. he took the cup

  316. saying this cup

  317. is the new covenant

  318. in my blood

  319. do this whenever you

  320. drink it in remembrance

  321. of me

  322. for whenever you eat

  323. this bread

  324. and drink this cup

  325. you proclaim the Lord's

  326. death until he comes

  327. so he's directing

  328. the attention

  329. of the body

  330. of Christ

  331. to the body

  332. of Christ

  333. and he's doing

  334. what has happened

  335. right throughout

  336. our message series

  337. in Corinthians

  338. he is

  339. taking us back

  340. to the way

  341. of the cross

  342. and he is reminding

  343. the people of God

  344. that we are

  345. who we are

  346. through the sacrificial

  347. self-serving

  348. act of our saviour

  349. God the Lord Jesus

  350. Christ who has

  351. made us one

  352. with him

  353. so this is not

  354. about which

  355. tradition do we

  356. go with

  357. and have all

  358. the church

  359. arguments of

  360. history that we

  361. could conduct

  362. or the method

  363. or whether we

  364. got an individual

  365. cup or a wafer

  366. or a piece of

  367. bread

  368. that's a load

  369. of nonsense

  370. it's a sideshow

  371. but what is

  372. the centre of

  373. this show is

  374. that there's a

  375. body of believers

  376. in Corinth

  377. who are humiliating

  378. one another

  379. by the way

  380. that they interact

  381. with each other

  382. they're calling

  383. it the Lord's

  384. supper

  385. and they have

  386. gone so far

  387. away from the

  388. truth that it

  389. is an offensive

  390. thing that they

  391. do in the light

  392. of what God

  393. has done for

  394. them

  395. and so you

  396. come into the

  397. last part of

  398. the passage

  399. where there's a

  400. warning there

  401. it says whoever

  402. eats the bread

  403. or drinks the

  404. cup of the

  405. Lord in

  406. unworthy

  407. manner

  408. we're not

  409. talking about

  410. little cups

  411. of grape juice

  412. and wafers

  413. we're talking

  414. about the

  415. behaviour of

  416. the body

  417. of Christ

  418. so whoever

  419. behaves as

  420. we gather

  421. in this

  422. corporate meal

  423. so whoever

  424. eats the

  425. bread or

  426. drinks the

  427. cup of

  428. the Lord

  429. in unworthy

  430. manner will

  431. be guilty

  432. of sinning

  433. against the

  434. body and

  435. blood of

  436. the Lord

  437. and a

  438. man ought

  439. to examine

  440. himself

  441. he ought

  442. to examine

  443. himself

  444. so should

  445. the woman

  446. before he

  447. eats of

  448. the bread

  449. and chokes

  450. on the

  451. cup

  452. or drinks

  453. from the

  454. cup

  455. because

  456. anybody

  457. who

  458. eats

  459. and

  460. drinks

  461. without

  462. recognising

  463. the

  464. body

  465. of

  466. the

  467. Lord

  468. eats

  469. and

  470. drinks

  471. judgment

  472. on

  473. himself

  474. and that

  475. is why

  476. many among

  477. you are

  478. weak and

  479. sick and

  480. a number

  481. of you

  482. fallen asleep

  483. but there's

  484. been a

  485. breakdown

  486. in corporate

  487. body

  488. life amongst

  489. these people

  490. and it's

  491. expressed

  492. very

  493. practically

  494. in the

  495. way they're

  496. conducting

  497. themselves

  498. when they

  499. come

  500. together

  501. in this

  502. meal which

  503. they call

  504. worship

  505. and God's

  506. judgment has

  507. been upon

  508. them but

  509. he's encouraging

  510. them to come

  511. under God's

  512. discipline rather

  513. than on his

  514. judgment and

  515. so respond to

  516. his words so

  517. respond now as

  518. sons and

  519. daughters of

  520. God and

  521. repent

  522. go back to

  523. your seats

  524. anyway

  525. you did a

  526. great job

  527. can we give

  528. them a hand

  529. so is this

  530. for our

  531. community

  532. group now

  533. or

  534. love

  535. doesn't

  536. work does

  537. it

  538. but then

  539. so it's

  540. very practical

  541. in the end

  542. verse 33

  543. my brothers

  544. when you

  545. come together

  546. to eat

  547. wait for

  548. each other

  549. it's almost

  550. a courtesy

  551. isn't it

  552. it's as

  553. simple as

  554. a courtesy

  555. and it's

  556. the other

  557. person

  558. centered

  559. love

  560. I'm not

  561. just going

  562. to fill

  563. my guts

  564. while you

  565. all stay

  566. hungry

  567. and there's

  568. probably

  569. something

  570. even bigger

  571. going on

  572. which is

  573. it's almost

  574. a display

  575. of wealth

  576. I've got

  577. my sandwich

  578. for today

  579. but these

  580. guys have

  581. got

  582. luxury

  583. and so I

  584. display my

  585. wealth

  586. and as I

  587. display my

  588. wealth

  589. and who I

  590. am in terms

  591. of the people

  592. of God

  593. as we meet

  594. in this

  595. place

  596. I exalt

  597. myself

  598. and by

  599. implication

  600. I humiliate

  601. other people

  602. around me

  603. and God

  604. calls us

  605. to a different

  606. standard of

  607. behaviour

  608. in the light

  609. of the cross

  610. and the way

  611. of the cross

  612. and what the

  613. Lord Jesus

  614. has done

  615. for us

  616. so if you're

  617. really hungry

  618. when you're

  619. coming for

  620. lunch

  621. well he's

  622. telling you

  623. to go and

  624. have a bit

  625. of Maccas

  626. before you

  627. turn up

  628. so you

  629. don't have

  630. to pig

  631. out and

  632. take yourself

  633. ahead of

  634. everyone else

  635. he doesn't

  636. say if you're

  637. hungry

  638. if anyone's

  639. hungry

  640. you've got

  641. to give

  642. him more

  643. it says

  644. if you're

  645. coming to

  646. this meal

  647. gathered as

  648. the people

  649. of God

  650. satisfy your

  651. hunger out

  652. there and

  653. then come

  654. and eat

  655. in moderation

  656. with everybody

  657. else

  658. be sensitive

  659. to the

  660. brothers and

  661. sisters that

  662. you have

  663. in Christ

  664. so that it

  665. will not

  666. result in

  667. judgement

  668. and when

  669. I come

  670. I'll give

  671. further

  672. direction

  673. so complete

  674. sense of

  675. 1 Corinthians

  676. 11

  677. absolutely

  678. not

  679. but there's

  680. a few

  681. things going

  682. on there

  683. which are

  684. good for

  685. us to

  686. heed

  687. what

  688. is

  689. what

  690. is

  691. coming

  692. soon

  693. to
