  1. There's been a fair bit of horror news lately.

  2. I think for me the tragedy of the Malaysian Airlines flights,

  3. or both flights, but certainly the one in recent times

  4. on the Flight 17, 17th of July,

  5. missile shot it out of the sky apparently.

  6. Still working that one out.

  7. 298 people dead.

  8. A number of those are Australians.

  9. That sort of thing puts a sort of a shudder up your spine.

  10. Having flown a number of times in the past,

  11. I couldn't think of a worse way to die really

  12. than to be up there in the sky

  13. and all of a sudden for your life to be gone

  14. or knowing that your life's about to end.

  15. I actually witnessed a plane accident when I was 18.

  16. A plane crashed. A person was killed.

  17. And awful, awful experience to see that.

  18. And it's planted clearly on my mind.

  19. I'll never forget the image of it.

  20. But to be part of something like this

  21. and to see the number of people that were impacted by this,

  22. no one would have seen it coming.

  23. But imagine you could.

  24. Imagine you did, in fact.

  25. Imagine that on the 16th of July,

  26. you got some information on the afternoon on the 16th of July

  27. about what was going to happen the next day.

  28. And what if your wife or your son or your mother

  29. or your brother-in-law or your neighbour or your friend

  30. or some random person that you knew was going to be on that plane?

  31. Or, in fact, not even on that plane,

  32. but on any plane in the vicinity of Eastern Europe?

  33. You knew that someone was flying back from Europe to Australia on a plane

  34. and you got this information that something terrible was going to happen.

  35. Would you not do everything within your power

  36. to use the information that you've received

  37. to help people avoid the destruction that was about to come?

  38. It's pretty obvious.

  39. I would do everything in my power to make sure

  40. that people would avoid that destruction.

  41. And what the Bible tells us

  42. is that something is coming that's infinitely worse

  43. than Malaysian Airlines 17

  44. and every other disaster you can think of.

  45. It's eternally worse.

  46. It will impact every human being.

  47. The Bible describes it as the judgment of God.

  48. It's a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  49. It's judgment.

  50. It's decisive.

  51. It's final.

  52. It's eternal.

  53. And what that information is meant to do for us

  54. is meant to shape the course of our lives now.

  55. And the question I want us to have in the back of our minds

  56. or in fact in the forefront of our minds

  57. as we look into Revelation chapter 1 right now

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  58. is what would it look like for God

  59. to become the dominant reality of your life?

  60. What would it be like for him, ultimate reality,

  61. to be the dominant reality in your life?

  62. What would it look like for the things in the Bible,

  63. God's revelation of himself,

  64. to be more real to us

  65. than the things on television or on the internet?

  66. You see, God has revealed himself

  67. to accomplish that very purpose,

  68. that he would become the dominant reality of our life.

  69. God reveals himself

  70. so that we would know ultimate reality.

  71. I fear, however,

  72. that because of what we,

  73. even what we read just now,

  74. was written so long ago

  75. that we've been lulled to sleep

  76. by just the ordinariness of our lives.

  77. We've been lulled to sleep

  78. because one day ticks over to another day,

  79. ticks over to another day,

  80. ticks over to another day.

  81. Our senses have been dulled by the hundredth

  82. of day after day after day.

  83. And so what we need as Christians

  84. is to consistently be coming back,

  85. looking at the scriptures,

  86. reminding ourselves of God

  87. and how he sees things,

  88. how he sees reality played out,

  89. not how we see things.

  90. We need to be convinced as Christians day by day

  91. in the humdrum of life

  92. that Jesus is reigning,

  93. that he is the risen king.

  94. We need to have him speak

  95. to the situations in our church.

  96. We need to know that God is right now,

  97. he is right now in this very moment

  98. on his throne.

  99. He's in control in heaven.

  100. He is worshipped by myriads

  101. upon myriads of heavenly hosts.

  102. We need to see the way that God

  103. is going to ultimately pulverize wickedness.

  104. He will obliterate those who oppose him

  105. and he is setting up his kingdom.

  106. What we need is this book of revelation.

  107. It's exactly what we need.

  108. You see, God has given us this book of revelation

  109. so that we can see him

  110. in all his glorious mercy and justice,

  111. so that we can see that if you've got Jesus,

  112. you are so, so fundamentally blessed

  113. and so that we would live our lives

  114. in worship of him

  115. above everything else.

  116. That's what we've got here in front of us

  117. in this book.

  118. You see, the message of revelation

  119. was essential for these very first recipients

  120. of this letter.

  121. It's written first and foremost

  122. to Christians almost 2,000 years ago

  123. is living in the Roman Empire

  124. and they're facing the biggest nightmare

  125. that you can imagine.

  126. Revelation 1 verse 9 tells us

    Revelation 1:9

  127. that John was exiled on the island of Patmos

  128. because of the word of God

  129. and the testimony of Jesus.

  130. So John, the guy who's written this,

  131. is representing Jesus

  132. and has got him into a whole heap of trouble.

  133. John's writing to the church,

  134. to the churches from exile.

  135. He's writing from the island of Patmos.

  136. Now you can go to Patmos nowadays,

  137. it's only a fairly small island,

  138. but it's got about 3,000 inhabitants

  139. and it's full of five-star resorts

  140. and luxury villas.

  141. In John's day, it was a prison island,

  142. so he's there smashing stones

  143. without sledgehammers.

  144. And he's there as an old man

  145. sentenced to work in the quarries

  146. because of the word of God

  147. and the testimony of Jesus.

  148. That is, what it's saying here

  149. is that Jesus was so real,

  150. so precious to John,

  151. that he would rather be exiled

  152. to a barren prison island

  153. than not represent Jesus.

  154. John is typical, I think,

  155. and what he's experienced here

  156. is typical of the hardship

  157. of many Christians were facing in his time.

  158. They were feeling the full force

  159. of the Roman Empire.

  160. According to the Roman writer Suetonius,

  161. the Roman emperor Domitian,

  162. who was the kingpin in the world

  163. at John's day,

  164. was both physically unimpressive

  165. and a moral catastrophe of a man.

  166. He had many affairs with married women

  167. and eventually stole someone else's wife

  168. to be his own.

  169. When his own brother Titus

  170. was hit with a serious illness,

  171. he ordered that he'd be left for dead.

  172. Another bloke,

  173. I think this guy was probably an actor

  174. or some kind of stand-up comedian

  175. or something like that,

  176. made some fairly harmless

  177. but humorous remarks about Domitian.

  178. Everyone thought it was funny,

  179. except Domitian,

  180. so he had him executed.

  181. He seduced his married niece,

  182. got her pregnant.

  183. She then died from the abortion

  184. that he forced her to have.

  185. This moral catastrophe of a man,

  186. that's just some of the things,

  187. I mean, it just goes on from there.

  188. He was sensitive about his baldness.

  189. He had a pot belly, spindly legs,

  190. and he demanded that the whole empire

  191. called him Lord God.

  192. And John is writing to a bunch of Christians

  193. who are suffering extreme hardship

  194. because they refuse to have this man

  195. say,

  196. I am your God.

  197. They refuse to allow Domitian

  198. to be the dominant reality in their life.

  199. Now, many of you would be aware

  200. that Christians in northern Iraq right now

  201. are being severely persecuted

  202. by the militant group called

  203. the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria,

  204. the ISIS group.

  205. They've issued a decree

  206. offering Christians three options,

  207. either convert to Islam,

  208. pay a special tax,

  209. or be killed.

  210. And you've probably seen it on Facebook.

  211. They've painted a symbol

  212. on the houses of Christians

  213. so that they are identified.

  214. They've painted other symbols

  215. on the houses of other religious groups

  216. they don't agree with either.

  217. And the ultimatum that was given

  218. to Christians was

  219. deadline for it was midday

  220. on the 19th of July.

  221. So choose that.

  222. That's your choice.

  223. Either convert to Islam,

  224. special tax,

  225. which is confiscation of goods in the end,

  226. or die.

  227. That's our brothers and sisters

  228. right now.

  229. That's what they're facing.

  230. And thousands upon thousands

  231. have fled and left everything.

  232. Everything.

  233. And it must be a question

  234. that's in their mind.

  235. Would you not imagine

  236. of where is Jesus right now

  237. in amongst that

  238. if he is the ruler of the world?

  239. And I can only say

  240. that what we've read tonight

  241. would be a word of comfort

  242. and perspective for them

  243. as it should be for us

  244. as it was for these Christians

  245. in the first century in Rome.

  246. The first thing

  247. that this revelation says

  248. that in spite of the terrible

  249. hardship that you're facing,

  250. you are truly blessed.

  251. Your life is one of blessing.

  252. That's the first bit of perspective

  253. they need to see.

  254. They were blessed

  255. because God has given

  256. this revelation of Jesus Christ

  257. about what will soon take place.

  258. They're blessed

  259. because they can see

  260. ultimate reality.

  261. They can see

  262. what truly is.

  263. They were blessed

  264. because God was giving them

  265. perspective and clarity

  266. not just on their present

  267. but in their future as well.

  268. They were also blessed

  269. because of what Jesus

  270. has done for them.

  271. See verse 5.

  272. He says,

  273. To him who loves us.

  274. What a great word to say

  275. in these very first verses.

  276. Jesus loves them.

  277. This is in the present tense.

  278. It's not that just

  279. he loved them in the past

  280. but he loves them right now.

  281. Right now.

  282. And Jesus' love for his people

  283. led Jesus ultimately

  284. to lay down his life for them.

  285. They are blessed

  286. because in laying down

  287. his life for them,

  288. verse 5,

  289. he has freed them

  290. from our sins

  291. by his blood.

  292. You see,

  293. those who sin,

  294. according to the Bible,

  295. deserve to die.

  296. And death

  297. is separation from God.

  298. And Jesus' death

  299. cancels our obligation

  300. to pay the penalty

  301. for our sins to God

  302. so that we might in fact

  303. be reconciled to God

  304. and live forever.

  305. And when you've got that,

  306. you've got everything.

  307. The blood of Jesus

  308. frees people

  309. from enslaving sin,

  310. lust and greed

  311. and pride and anger

  312. and everything else.

  313. The blood of Jesus

  314. breaks the power

  315. of cancelled sin.

  316. We are blessed

  317. because of what we have

  318. in Jesus

  319. regardless of the circumstances.

  320. Verse 6 says,

  321. He has made us

  322. a kingdom and priest

  323. to his God and Father.

  324. That is,

  325. we belong to Jesus,

  326. we are his people

  327. and our allegiance is to him.

  328. We are blessed

  329. because the kingdom

  330. of Jesus

  331. cannot be overcome.

  332. This blessing of love

  333. and forgiveness of sins

  334. that comes from Jesus

  335. is a secure blessing.

  336. No one can take it from you.

  337. Notice who gives it to us.

  338. Verse 4,

  339. From him who was

  340. and who is to come.

  341. Verse 5,

  342. From Jesus Christ,

  343. the firstborn from the dead

  344. and the ruler of the kings

  345. of the earth.

  346. Verse 6,

  347. The one to whom power

  348. and glory belong forever.

  349. Verse 8,

  350. The one who is

  351. and who was

  352. and who is to come.

  353. the almighty.

  354. How good

  355. must John's experience

  356. of Christ be

  357. for him to declare

  358. this blessing.

  359. You know,

  360. don't let this point

  361. miss you.

  362. John is sitting

  363. in a prison cell

  364. as an old man

  365. breaking stones

  366. for a living

  367. and he says,

  368. Man,

  369. how great it is

  370. to be in Christ.

  371. In spite of the way

  372. that Christianity

  373. will not advance

  374. you in the Roman Empire,

  375. in spite of the fact

  376. that knowing Jesus

  377. could cost you

  378. your possessions,

  379. land you in prison

  380. or cost you your life,

  381. you're blessed

  382. if you know Jesus.

  383. John must think

  384. it is better

  385. to stand right before God

  386. by faith in Christ,

  387. forgiven and free

  388. of all of your sin

  389. than it is

  390. to have all of the

  391. Roman Empire

  392. bow to you.

  393. John must think

  394. that there is life

  395. after this life

  396. in which the rewards

  397. for those

  398. who belong to Jesus

  399. will be superior

  400. to all the pleasures

  401. of sin

  402. in this present world.

  403. This must have been

  404. an enormous comfort

  405. to John

  406. sitting in the island

  407. of Patmos.

  408. But it's also

  409. a comfort

  410. for the Christians

  411. in the Roman Empire.

  412. and ultimately

  413. for us as well.

  414. The voice that he heard

  415. in verse 10

  416. says in verse 11,

  417. write on a scroll

  418. what you see

  419. and send it

  420. to the seven churches.

  421. And so this vision

  422. John is about to get

  423. in the next number

  424. of chapters

  425. is meant not just

  426. for him

  427. sitting in the island

  428. of Patmos

  429. but for us too.

  430. The point of writing

  431. it down

  432. is to transmit

  433. to us

  434. the same kind

  435. experience

  436. that John

  437. has in seeing

  438. Christ.

  439. John

  440. God has

  441. graciously

  442. given John

  443. this vision

  444. of the supremacy

  445. of Christ

  446. and all of history

  447. being in his hands.

  448. And he writes it down

  449. so that we might

  450. see it too

  451. and so that we

  452. would be comforted

  453. as well.

  454. He appears

  455. to John

  456. and says

  457. write in a book

  458. what you see

  459. and send it

  460. to the seven churches.

  461. John gets the vision

  462. we get the book

  463. about the vision.

  464. That is

  465. God wants to come

  466. to us as well

  467. through his word.

  468. He wants us

  469. to seek him

  470. in his word

  471. and know him

  472. by his word

  473. and gaze upon him

  474. steadily through

  475. his word

  476. so that we

  477. would know

  478. how blessed

  479. we are.

  480. This is a revelation

  481. for imprisoned

  482. John

  483. for persecuted

  484. Christians in the

  485. Roman Empire

  486. and for our

  487. brothers and

  488. sisters right now

  489. in northern Iraq

  490. and for us

  491. sitting right here

  492. with our

  493. senses dulled.

  494. for us

  495. sitting right here

  496. who are suffering

  497. for those who

  498. are tired

  499. and weary

  500. and running

  501. out of steam

  502. and confused

  503. and disheartened

  504. and disenfranchised

  505. and insecure

  506. despite the

  507. circumstances

  508. you need to know

  509. how blessed you are

  510. if you are in

  511. Christ

  512. knowing how

  513. blessed you are

  514. we are called

  515. here

  516. to treasure

  517. Jesus

  518. to make him

  519. the dominant

  520. reality in our

  521. life.

  522. Let's have a look

  523. at what John

  524. saw in verse 12.

  525. John turns

  526. to see the voice

  527. that was like a

  528. trumpet in verse 10

  529. and what he saw

  530. was seven golden

  531. lampstands and

  532. Christ in the

  533. midst of them.

  534. Notice down to

  535. verse 20

  536. at the end of

  537. the chapter

  538. for an interpretation

  539. of what the

  540. lampstands are.

  541. It says the

  542. mystery of the

  543. seven stars

  544. that you saw

  545. in my right hand

  546. of the seven

  547. golden lampstands

  548. is this

  549. the seven stars

  550. are the angels

  551. of the seven

  552. churches

  553. and the

  554. seven lampstands

  555. are the seven

  556. churches.

  557. So the vision

  558. of Jesus

  559. that John

  560. gets is

  561. Jesus

  562. among his

  563. churches

  564. among his

  565. people.

  566. Christ is

  567. standing

  568. amongst his

  569. churches.

  570. He's not

  571. merely over

  572. the churches.

  573. He's not

  574. distant from

  575. the churches.

  576. He's in the

  577. middle of the

  578. churches.

  579. And John

  580. saw according

  581. to verse 13

  582. one like a

  583. son of man.

  584. In Daniel

    Daniel 7:13

  585. chapter 7

  586. verses 13

  587. and 14

  588. the term

  589. son of man

  590. or one

  591. like the

  592. son of man

  593. refers to

  594. a great

  595. ruler.

  596. This is what

  597. it says in

  598. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  599. 7.

  600. In my vision

  601. at night

  602. I looked

  603. and there

  604. before me

  605. was one

  606. like a

  607. son of man

  608. coming with

  609. the clouds

  610. of heaven.

  611. He approached

  612. the ancient

  613. of days

  614. and was led

  615. into his

  616. presence.

  617. He was

  618. given

  619. authority,

  620. glory and

  621. sovereign power.

  622. All peoples,

  623. nations and

  624. men of every

  625. language worshipped

  626. him.

  627. His dominion

  628. is an

  629. everlasting

  630. dominion that

  631. will not

  632. pass away and

  633. his kingdom

  634. is one that

  635. will never be

  636. destroyed.

  637. And so what

  638. John saw

  639. when he saw

  640. this one like a

  641. son of man

  642. standing in the

  643. middle of the

  644. lampstands,

  645. he means that

  646. he saw someone

  647. who stands

  648. over the top

  649. of his kingdom

  650. with all

  651. dominion,

  652. glory and

  653. kingdom power.

  654. It will be

  655. an eternal

  656. kingdom.

  657. kingdom,

  658. someone with

  659. authority over

  660. all nations,

  661. all peoples,

  662. who would

  663. rule forever

  664. and ever

  665. and ever

  666. and nothing

  667. can touch

  668. his kingdom.

  669. The one who

  670. stands among

  671. the churches

  672. is the one

  673. who received

  674. from the

  675. ancient of

  676. days,

  677. God himself

  678. dominion and

  679. glory and

  680. kingdom,

  681. rule and

  682. power and

  683. authority in

  684. heaven and

  685. on earth.

  686. That pretty

  687. much matches

  688. this figure

  689. that John

  690. saw in

  691. verse 13.

  692. The son of

  693. man was

  694. dressed in

  695. a robe

  696. reaching down

  697. to his feet

  698. with a gold

  699. sash around

  700. his chest.

  701. The robe

  702. here is similar

  703. to the picture

  704. of the Old

  705. Testament robe

  706. where the

  707. priest wore.

  708. The gold

  709. sash around

  710. his chest

  711. shows two

  712. things.

  713. It's up here

  714. around his

  715. chest,

  716. it's not

  717. around his

  718. waist and

  719. it's gold.

  720. The fact

  721. that it's

  722. gold shows

  723. that his

  724. priesthood is

  725. a highly

  726. valued priesthood

  727. and it is a

  728. great priesthood.

  729. Jesus is not

  730. only the son

  731. of man from

  732. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  733. 7 who

  734. receives

  735. everlasting

  736. dominion over

  737. all nations

  738. and people,

  739. he is also

  740. the final

  741. high priest

  742. who brings

  743. all the

  744. priestly work

  745. of the

  746. temple to

  747. the end.

  748. There's no

  749. more need

  750. to sacrifice

  751. any animals

  752. to get right

  753. with God.

  754. Verse 5

  755. says that

  756. Christ freed

  757. us from

  758. our sins

  759. by his

  760. blood.

  761. You see

  762. this priest

  763. is so

  764. great that

  765. he gave

  766. his own

  767. blood once

  768. and for

  769. all.

  770. For the

  771. sin of

  772. all

  773. humanity

  774. so that

  775. we might

  776. be reconciled

  777. to God.

  778. He stands

  779. among the

  780. lampstands,

  781. he stands

  782. here by

  783. us today

  784. as one

  785. with authority

  786. and everlasting

  787. dominion,

  788. the one

  789. with final

  790. decisive

  791. forgiveness

  792. for our

  793. sins.

  794. Then John

  795. sees in

  796. verse 14

  797. that his

  798. head and

  799. his hair

  800. were white

  801. like wool

  802. as white

  803. as snow.

  804. And this

  805. is remarkable

  806. because Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  807. chapter 7,

  808. you know,

  809. when John

  810. gets his

  811. picture of the

  812. one like a

  813. son of man

  814. in verses

  815. 13 and

  816. 14,

  817. a few

  818. verses

  819. further,

  820. earlier than

  821. that,

  822. God the

  823. father is

  824. described in

  825. verse 9,

  826. as I looked,

  827. thrones were

  828. set in place

  829. and the

  830. ancient of

  831. days took

  832. his seat.

  833. His clothing

  834. was as

  835. white as

  836. snow and

  837. the hair of

  838. his head

  839. was white

  840. like wool.

  841. people.

  842. In other

  843. words,

  844. John is

  845. describing the

  846. son of

  847. man in

  848. terms used

  849. by God

  850. himself.

  851. And so

  852. you put

  853. this picture

  854. together with

  855. the next

  856. thing that

  857. John sees

  858. in verse

  859. 14,

  860. that his

  861. eyes were

  862. like blazing

  863. fire.

  864. You see,

  865. the eyes of

  866. this son of

  867. man were

  868. not the

  869. clouded eye

  870. of fading

  871. glory.

  872. These

  873. eyes have

  874. eyes of

  875. sharpest

  876. clarity and

  877. purity.

  878. they miss

  879. nothing that

  880. happens in

  881. the universe

  882. and they

  883. are exploding

  884. with energy.

  885. You see,

  886. we all know

  887. the drooping

  888. eye that's

  889. about to go

  890. to sleep.

  891. You know,

  892. you're trying

  893. to stay

  894. awake to

  895. finally get

  896. the end of

  897. the movie

  898. and the

  899. plot line.

  900. Or the

  901. resentful eye.

  902. Or the

  903. grumpy eye.

  904. Or the

  905. half-shut eye

  906. with a scowl

  907. and a bad

  908. mood.

  909. We know

  910. the eye that

  911. is alive with

  912. wonder and

  913. excitement.

  914. hope and

  915. expectancy and

  916. energy.

  917. Jesus' eyes

  918. here are

  919. described as

  920. flaming fire.

  921. What we

  922. see then is

  923. hair as

  924. white as

  925. snow and

  926. eyes like

  927. fire.

  928. You've

  929. got to

  930. know today

  931. 2,000 years

  932. after John

  933. saw this

  934. vision that

  935. Jesus is

  936. not tired,

  937. he's not

  938. burnt out,

  939. he's not

  940. fatigued.

  941. His eyes

  942. are aflame

  943. with a

  944. flashing fire

  945. of inexhaustible

  946. energy and

  947. hope.

  948. He sees

  949. everything that

  950. has been

  951. and everything

  952. that will

  953. be.

  954. Nothing

  955. takes him

  956. by surprise

  957. that when

  958. Jesus thinks

  959. about his

  960. plans for

  961. you and

  962. for

  963. Paul's and

  964. for Australia

  965. and for

  966. Christians in

  967. northern Iraq

  968. and the

  969. nations of

  970. the world,

  971. beyond this

  972. day, he is

  973. not hesitant,

  974. he is not

  975. tired, he

  976. is not

  977. bored.

  978. his eyes

  979. are aflame

  980. of fire

  981. with utter

  982. exhilaration

  983. and passion

  984. and enthusiasm

  985. for the

  986. work that

  987. he intends

  988. to do.

  989. His

  990. enthusiasm

  991. for his

  992. mission

  993. is as

  994. bright today

  995. as it was

  996. 2,000 years

  997. ago when

  998. John saw

  999. this.

  1000. Notice

  1001. also the

  1002. bronze feet

  1003. in verse

  1004. 15,

  1005. they are the

  1006. feet of a

  1007. glorious and

  1008. mighty conqueror

  1009. and again in

  1010. verse 15 is

  1011. the voice of

  1012. the sound of

  1013. many waters.

  1014. It's just a

  1015. picture of

  1016. raw power,

  1017. the thunder of

  1018. the voice of

  1019. authority and

  1020. then there is

  1021. this right hand

  1022. with the seven

  1023. stars and a

  1024. sharp sword

  1025. coming out of

  1026. his mouth and

  1027. his face,

  1028. shining with

  1029. the sun in

  1030. all its

  1031. brilliance.

  1032. What do you

  1033. do when you're

  1034. confronted with

  1035. such power and

  1036. majesty and

  1037. splendor and

  1038. just sheer

  1039. awe?

  1040. verse 16,

  1041. verse 17,

  1042. when I saw

  1043. him I fell

  1044. at his feet

  1045. as though

  1046. dead.

  1047. I fell at

  1048. his feet

  1049. as though

  1050. dead.

  1051. This is the

  1052. resurrected,

  1053. glorified Christ

  1054. and the person

  1055. who's writing

  1056. this, the

  1057. person who fell

  1058. at his feet

  1059. as though

  1060. dead is

  1061. John.

  1062. John.

  1063. Just a

  1064. matter of

  1065. decades

  1066. earlier,

  1067. John was

  1068. Jesus'

  1069. best mate.

  1070. John was

  1071. the guy

  1072. when the

  1073. moment of

  1074. quietness was

  1075. there, Jesus

  1076. would gather

  1077. John with

  1078. him.

  1079. John was

  1080. the one who

  1081. leaned on

  1082. Jesus and

  1083. had a nap.

  1084. Sam doesn't

  1085. do that for

  1086. me.

  1087. Not even

  1088. on a long

  1089. flight.

  1090. That's how

  1091. close John

  1092. and Jesus

  1093. were and

  1094. John sees

  1095. Jesus here

  1096. and he

  1097. falls down

  1098. as though

  1099. dead.

  1100. I am not

  1101. worthy to

  1102. be in your

  1103. presence.

  1104. This Jesus

  1105. is not to

  1106. be trifled

  1107. with.

  1108. He's not

  1109. to be

  1110. treated

  1111. with

  1112. disdain.

  1113. Domitian

  1114. might be

  1115. the emperor

  1116. of the

  1117. Roman Empire

  1118. but he's

  1119. a librarian

  1120. compared to

  1121. Jesus.

  1122. And to

  1123. John's

  1124. immense

  1125. relief,

  1126. his once

  1127. best mate

  1128. leans over

  1129. to him.

  1130. The judge,

  1131. the king,

  1132. the majestic

  1133. eternal ruler

  1134. places his

  1135. hand on his

  1136. right shoulders

  1137. and speaks

  1138. words of

  1139. comfort to

  1140. him,

  1141. do not

  1142. be afraid.

  1143. See,

  1144. this is a

  1145. word of

  1146. comfort for

  1147. Christians

  1148. struggling in

  1149. this world.

  1150. Do not

  1151. be afraid.

  1152. This is

  1153. astounding

  1154. words of

  1155. comfort for

  1156. a prisoner

  1157. of the

  1158. Lord

  1159. Jesus.

  1160. This

  1161. Jesus

  1162. stands with

  1163. his people

  1164. suffering

  1165. terribly in

  1166. Iraq right

  1167. now and

  1168. from this

  1169. word you

  1170. can say

  1171. do not

  1172. be afraid.

  1173. Someone

  1174. greater than

  1175. ISIS is

  1176. here.

  1177. The

  1178. encouragement

  1179. here is

  1180. that despite

  1181. how it

  1182. looks,

  1183. Jesus is

  1184. with his

  1185. church,

  1186. he's in

  1187. Iraq,

  1188. he's right

  1189. here with

  1190. us right

  1191. now as

  1192. the son

  1193. of man,

  1194. the one

  1195. with power

  1196. over all

  1197. that is,

  1198. seen and

  1199. unseen,

  1200. the one

  1201. with everlasting

  1202. dominion and

  1203. glory.

  1204. He is the

  1205. great high

  1206. priest and

  1207. he has put

  1208. away your

  1209. sins once

  1210. and for

  1211. all.

  1212. He is the

  1213. great and

  1214. wise ancient

  1215. of days and

  1216. yet his

  1217. eyes are

  1218. aflamed with

  1219. the fire of

  1220. youth and

  1221. energy and

  1222. hope and

  1223. exhilaration for

  1224. his unstoppable

  1225. plans for you

  1226. and for his

  1227. church and for

  1228. his world and

  1229. for his

  1230. universe.

  1231. gaze upon

  1232. Jesus and

  1233. let his

  1234. royal power

  1235. and his

  1236. priestly

  1237. forgiveness and

  1238. his fiery

  1239. hope fill

  1240. you with

  1241. confidence

  1242. afresh that

  1243. treasuring this

  1244. Jesus and

  1245. making him

  1246. the dominant

  1247. reality in

  1248. your life

  1249. is not a

  1250. vanity.

  1251. vanity.

  1252. It is never

  1253. a vanity to

  1254. throw your

  1255. lot or

  1256. everything behind

  1257. this Jesus and

  1258. with this

  1259. Jesus.

  1260. You see the

  1261. most significant

  1262. feature of this

  1263. passage is the

  1264. overwhelming glory

  1265. of Jesus.

  1266. He is risen,

  1267. he is indestructible,

  1268. he is unconquerable,

  1269. he is Lord and

  1270. as such he

  1271. summons forth

  1272. obedience and

  1273. allegiance and

  1274. worship from his

  1275. blessed people.

  1276. Jesus is to be

  1277. worshipped, he is

  1278. to be obeyed

  1279. because of his

  1280. surpassing worth

  1281. and power.

  1282. And John intends

  1283. this book of

  1284. Revelation to

  1285. produce a radical

  1286. change in

  1287. perspective for

  1288. us, for

  1289. everyone.

  1290. Is your gaze

  1291. consistently upon

  1292. Jesus?

  1293. Do you preach

  1294. this gospel to

  1295. yourself every

  1296. day and remind

  1297. you that you

  1298. are so blessed

  1299. regardless of

  1300. the circumstances

  1301. in your life?

  1302. That you are so

  1303. blessed because of

  1304. Jesus.

  1305. Are you

  1306. announcing to

  1307. everyone who

  1308. will listen how

  1309. blessed it is to

  1310. know Jesus?

  1311. Are you calling

  1312. people to taste

  1313. and see that this

  1314. Lord is good?

  1315. Do people see it

  1316. in your life,

  1317. in your values,

  1318. in your priorities,

  1319. in your attitude,

  1320. and your

  1321. perspective,

  1322. that Jesus is

  1323. the dominant

  1324. reality of your

  1325. life?

  1326. Let me read to

  1327. you something that

  1328. was written.

  1329. So, John gets

  1330. this revelation,

  1331. sends it to the

  1332. churches in Rome.

  1333. Let me read

  1334. you, to you,

  1335. how the

  1336. Christians in

  1337. Rome responded

  1338. to this

  1339. revelation.

  1340. This is one

  1341. writer reflecting

  1342. on the

  1343. Christians at

  1344. this time of

  1345. enormous

  1346. persecution.

  1347. They loved

  1348. everyone, but

  1349. by everyone

  1350. they are

  1351. persecuted.

  1352. They are

  1353. unknown, yet

  1354. they are

  1355. condemned.

  1356. They are put

  1357. to death, and

  1358. yet they are

  1359. brought to

  1360. life.

  1361. They are

  1362. poor, and

  1363. yet they make

  1364. so many rich.

  1365. They are in

  1366. need of

  1367. everything, and

  1368. yet they are

  1369. bound in

  1370. everything.

  1371. They are

  1372. dishonored, and

  1373. yet they are

  1374. glorified in

  1375. their dishonor.

  1376. They are

  1377. slandered, and

  1378. yet they are

  1379. vindicated.

  1380. They are

  1381. cursed, and

  1382. yet they

  1383. bless.

  1384. They are

  1385. insulted, yet

  1386. they offer

  1387. respect.

  1388. And when

  1389. they do

  1390. good, they

  1391. are punished

  1392. as evildoers.

  1393. And when

  1394. they are

  1395. punished, they

  1396. rejoice as

  1397. though they

  1398. are brought

  1399. to life.

  1400. And so

  1401. Christians were

  1402. punished daily.

  1403. And so

  1404. Christians, when

  1405. punished, daily

  1406. increase more

  1407. and more.

  1408. don't miss

  1409. what that

  1410. quotation

  1411. communicates.

  1412. These

  1413. Christians live

  1414. in a way that

  1415. says that

  1416. knowing and

  1417. treasuring Jesus

  1418. is better than

  1419. everything.

  1420. It's better

  1421. than freedom

  1422. from persecution.

  1423. Knowing and

  1424. treasuring Jesus

  1425. is better than

  1426. avoiding martyrdom

  1427. by denying

  1428. him.

  1429. Knowing and

  1430. treasuring Jesus

  1431. is better than

  1432. money and

  1433. status.

  1434. Knowing and

  1435. treasuring Jesus

  1436. is better than

  1437. fame.

  1438. Knowing and

  1439. treasuring Jesus

  1440. is better than

  1441. doing evil to

  1442. avoid persecution

  1443. from criminal

  1444. governments.

  1445. You see, when

  1446. Christians joyfully

  1447. embrace Jesus

  1448. as the dominant

  1449. reality of their

  1450. lives, through

  1451. difficult times

  1452. especially, it

  1453. causes their

  1454. numbers to

  1455. increase.

  1456. When Christians

  1457. treasure Jesus

  1458. by joyfully

  1459. showing by their

  1460. lives that

  1461. knowing God

  1462. is so

  1463. immensely good,

  1464. others want to

  1465. know such a

  1466. God.

  1467. Is Jesus

  1468. the dominant

  1469. reality in

  1470. your life?

  1471. And do

  1472. others see it?

  1473. Let's pray.

  1474. Father God,

  1475. we pray that

  1476. you would help

  1477. us to see

  1478. Jesus.

  1479. Give us a

  1480. glimpse of

  1481. his majesty,

  1482. of his worth.

  1483. earth, we

  1484. ask that we

  1485. would be a

  1486. church that

  1487. lives out what

  1488. we say that we

  1489. exist for, to

  1490. know, to

  1491. treasure, to

  1492. represent Jesus.

  1493. Help us with

  1494. pray.

  1495. Give us such a

  1496. glimpse of your

  1497. glory and your

  1498. purposes that he

  1499. might become the

  1500. dominant reality of

  1501. our lives.

  1502. grace.

  1503. We pray for our

  1504. brothers and

  1505. sisters in Iraq,

  1506. right now and

  1507. in many other

  1508. places in the

  1509. world, where

  1510. they are not

  1511. dulled to the

  1512. senses of what

  1513. the cost is in

  1514. following you.

  1515. Father, we pray

  1516. that you would

  1517. pour out your

  1518. spirit upon them

  1519. so that they

  1520. might see Jesus

  1521. in all his

  1522. splendor, that

  1523. they might feel

  1524. his hand upon

  1525. them.

  1526. they might hear

  1527. the words from

  1528. your word by

  1529. your spirit to

  1530. their hearts,

  1531. their minds.

  1532. Do not be

  1533. afraid.

  1534. We ask it for

  1535. your glory.

  1536. Amen.
