  1. When we first became parents, Natalie and I were determined to be good parents.

  2. We'd worked out in advance of having kids.

  3. But it didn't take us long to realise that we were far better parents without kids than with kids.

  4. It's just a whole lot easier, I think, to think about and actually do it.

  5. There were a few things that we decided we weren't going to bend on.

  6. Sugar intake and TV time were the two things that we, amongst other things, were going to draw a line on.

  7. We were pretty strict with both.

  8. Poor little Izzy, for some time, thought that milk arrowroot was the best biscuit in the world.

  9. That's because that's what I consistently told her, it was the best biscuit in the world,

  10. until her little fingers wrapped for the first time around a Tim Tam.

  11. And she discovered that I was lying.

  12. I remember the first time that chocolate actually touched her lips.

  13. I forget how old she was.

  14. I don't think she was, she wouldn't have been a year old, I don't think.

  15. But we were on a ferry between Townsville and Magnetic Island.

  16. We were travelling with some friends and one of the lady had a, she was eating a Magnum ice cream.

  17. Sitting, and she had Izzy on one lap, she's eating his Magnum ice cream.

  18. And without even thinking about it, she ripped off a whole chunk of the chocolate and shoved it in her mouth.

  19. And her eyes just lit up.

  20. And the world changed.

  21. It was all Technicolor and fireworks and fairies.

  22. And she just immediately, having tasted the chocolate, she just immediately grabbed the other hand and went,

  23. with the chocolate, with the ice cream and took a mouthful of it.

  24. But for me in that moment, I was like, oh, compromise.

  25. You know, and yet from that moment, how easy, it was all spoiled by that moment,

  26. so how easy it is from that moment to compromise from one thing to the next thing to the next thing.

  27. And now we go on holidays and I hear myself saying things like, it's holidays.

  28. Eat an ice cream every day if you like.

  29. How quickly it was that I bent.

  30. And that's to say nothing about TV.

  31. When your kids have been sick for a week, mum becomes a waitress and the TV's the nurse.

  32. I mean, which is what's been happening for the last 10 days.

  33. Our kids have just been, you know, one Peter Rabbit thing and Bob the Builder and all this other stuff that they watch.

  34. One thing, Saddle Club, one after another after another.

  35. And one of the things that I used to think was a real shame was I'd drive past people,

  36. I'd take them on the highway and they'd see the TVs glowing in the back of the car.

  37. And I remember thinking, oh, I'd never do that.

  38. I've now worn out three sets of those dual screen TV things in the back of my car.

  39. I'm looking for the fourth one already.

  40. Compromise, I think, is one thing when it's sugar and TV.

  41. It's another thing when it comes to sin and Jesus.

  42. After 20 years of ministry, I cannot count the number of people who I know in all sorts of various ways

  43. who have compromised with Jesus and walked away from faith in him.

  44. I actually think, for me personally, it's one of the hardest things about ministry

  45. is people making those decisions which ultimately see them walking away from Jesus.

  46. Some of those people were more committed than me.

  47. They were better taught.

  48. They were further down the track, being Christians a lot longer.

  49. People who were fervent for Christ.

  50. Some were kids in youth groups.

  51. Some were youth group leaders.

  52. Some were students with me at Moore College.

  53. Some of them were high-profile pastors and preachers.

  54. It's very sad when it happens.

  55. I remember specifically where I was when one of my best friends phoned me up

  56. and in the course of the conversation said to me,

  57. Steve, I'm just not convinced it's true anymore.

  58. I remember pleading with another young lady

  59. not to marry a certain non-Christian guy

  60. they married and she is now finished with Jesus

  61. none of these people

  62. all circumstances are different

  63. but one of the things which is interesting

  64. is that none of them sought counsel earlier

  65. in making their decisions

  66. none of them shared their conflicts and their struggles of their hearts

  67. now let me say

  68. Jesus might not be finished with them

  69. but for the moment

  70. they are finished with Jesus

  71. and as Jesus addresses this church at Pergamon

  72. the believers there seem to be flirting with false teaching

  73. they are not openly embracing immorality

  74. and idolatry

  75. but what they haven't done

  76. is they haven't closed the door on it

  77. they are leaving the door open to it

  78. Jesus begins with a strong commendation of this church at Pergamon

  79. and this commendation is made even stronger

  80. because Jesus knows that they are living in a fairly bad neighbourhood

  81. verse 13

  82. I know where you live

  83. where Satan has his throne

  84. that's Pergamon

  85. now so if Ephesus

  86. we have looked at Ephesus and Smyrna so far

  87. so if Ephesus is the sort of like business

  88. you know

  89. place of

  90. of Asia Minor

  91. sort of like your Sydney of Asia Minor

  92. Smyrna was more like the Melbourne

  93. cultural trendy kind of place

  94. of Asia Minor

  95. Pergamon was its Canberra

  96. poor Pergamon

  97. okay

  98. so you've got the picture right

  99. okay

  100. it was the seat of government

  101. in Asia Minor

  102. and as such

  103. it was the first place

  104. to have a temple

  105. which was authorised

  106. as a place of worship

  107. for the emperor

  108. and so Pergamon

  109. was the most important city

  110. in Asia Minor

  111. as far as the Roman imperial cult

  112. was concerned

  113. so Roman pagan idolatry

  114. quickly gained acceptance

  115. it amalgamated with a bunch of other

  116. religious practices of Pergamon

  117. so there was a nice

  118. official

  119. approved

  120. blend

  121. of

  122. religious practices

  123. and ideas

  124. and thoughts

  125. that's

  126. where Pergamon was

  127. that's the neighbourhood

  128. but in spite of the bad influence

  129. of the neighbourhood

  130. Jesus says in verse 13

  131. yet you remain true to my name

  132. you did not renounce your faith in me

  133. even in the days of Antipas

  134. my faithful witness

  135. who was put to death

  136. in your city

  137. where Satan lives

  138. so in spite of their

  139. proximity

  140. to Satan's throne

  141. they remain true

  142. to the name of Jesus

  143. that means what

  144. they were actually living

  145. for the glory

  146. of Jesus

  147. we can see here

  148. that Jesus name

  149. his glory

  150. matters a lot

  151. to him

  152. by the way that he mentions it

  153. to these churches

  154. not just this one

  155. to the other churches

  156. so in chapter 2 verse 3

  157. you have persevered

  158. and have endured hardship

  159. for my name

  160. verse 13

  161. you remain true

  162. to my name

  163. verse 8

  164. of chapter 3

  165. you have kept my word

  166. and have not denied my name

  167. verse 12

  168. of chapter 3

  169. I will write on him

  170. the name of my God

  171. and my own new name

  172. Jesus cares

  173. about his name

  174. that is

  175. he cares about

  176. his reputation

  177. I remember

  178. going to a restaurant

  179. with a member

  180. of my extended family

  181. when I was a teenager

  182. and as we

  183. sat down

  184. we had this sort of

  185. big table booked

  186. and we sat down

  187. and my grandfather

  188. the patriarch

  189. of the family

  190. said to us all

  191. at the table

  192. now

  193. listen up

  194. I'm well known

  195. in this place

  196. now the implication

  197. was that we had

  198. to behave ourselves

  199. and not do anything

  200. that would actually

  201. embarrass him

  202. in any way

  203. which as a teenager

  204. you're kind of tempted to

  205. once he says it

  206. and he was concerned

  207. for his reputation

  208. we took it

  209. as a bit of a joke

  210. and as him

  211. big noting himself

  212. which is what he tended

  213. to do

  214. but all these years later

  215. I mean we took a number

  216. of years later

  217. like 30 odd years later

  218. now

  219. it's still a joke

  220. in the family

  221. so

  222. as my brothers

  223. and my parents

  224. and the extended families

  225. went out to a restaurant

  226. last year sometime

  227. as we walked in the restaurant

  228. dad turned around

  229. and said

  230. now boys

  231. don't forget

  232. I'm well known

  233. in this place

  234. so behave yourselves

  235. and I think he'd had

  236. a coffee there

  237. once before

  238. or something like that

  239. and dad was up here

  240. visiting recently

  241. and he came to church

  242. with me on Sunday morning

  243. and I said to him

  244. now dad remember

  245. I'm well known

  246. in this place

  247. behave yourself

  248. now I suspect

  249. that most parents

  250. know that feeling

  251. that in some ways

  252. my kids

  253. are a reflection

  254. on me

  255. in some ways

  256. and here we see

  257. Jesus is saying

  258. I care about my name

  259. I care about my reputation

  260. and this church

  261. at Pergamum

  262. had held fast

  263. to the name of Jesus

  264. and by doing that

  265. by holding fast

  266. to the name of Jesus

  267. even to the point of death

  268. as in the case

  269. of Antipas

  270. they were declaring

  271. to the city of Pergamum

  272. that Jesus

  273. is better than life

  274. it's what we looked at

  275. last week

  276. they held up well

  277. in this satanic

  278. stronghold

  279. in which they lived

  280. but their faithfulness

  281. to Jesus name

  282. was under threat

  283. see it there

  284. in verse 14

  285. nevertheless

  286. I have a few things

  287. against you

  288. you have put up

  289. you have people there

  290. who hold to the teaching

  291. of Balaam

  292. who taught Balak

  293. to entice the Israelites

  294. to sin

  295. by eating food

  296. sacrificed to idols

  297. and by committing

  298. sexual immorality

  299. likewise

  300. you also have

  301. those who hold

  302. to the teaching

  303. of the Nicolaitans

  304. now this is a bit

  305. of a tricky bit

  306. but this point here

  307. is the heart

  308. of the issue

  309. for this church

  310. at Pergamum

  311. in the Old Testament

  312. there's this strange

  313. prophet

  314. named Balaam

  315. and there's another man

  316. with a similar

  317. sounding name

  318. called Balak

  319. now Balaam

  320. was a prophet

  321. for hire

  322. and Balak

  323. was the king

  324. of Moab

  325. and in Numbers

  326. 22 to 24

  327. we read

  328. that Balak

  329. offered Balaam

  330. money

  331. to prophesy

  332. a curse

  333. upon God's people

  334. Israel

  335. you see

  336. Balak was worried

  337. because he had seen

  338. how numerous

  339. the people of Israel

  340. were

  341. they'd come out

  342. of Egypt

  343. and they were just

  344. growing in prominence

  345. and everywhere they went

  346. they just succeeded

  347. and he was kind of worried

  348. they're going to move

  349. into Moab

  350. they're going to destroy

  351. his kingdom

  352. depose him as a king

  353. and take over the place

  354. and so he pays

  355. Balaam

  356. to curse God's people

  357. to send them off

  358. but every time

  359. Balaam tried to

  360. prophesy

  361. against God's people

  362. blessing came out

  363. rather than cursing

  364. it's fairly comical

  365. actually

  366. he'd stand up

  367. and go

  368. okay okay

  369. I'll do it this time

  370. and speak

  371. and blessing comes out

  372. rather than curses

  373. and Balaam

  374. desperately wanted

  375. to get paid

  376. he was a

  377. prophet for hire

  378. and Balak's

  379. pulling his hair out

  380. because he wants

  381. these people cursed

  382. he couldn't get God

  383. to curse his people

  384. and so he came up

  385. with another plan

  386. it's there in

  387. chapter 25

  388. verses 1 to 3

  389. the men began

  390. to indulge

  391. in sexual immorality

  392. with Moabite women

  393. who invited them

  394. to the sacrifices

  395. to their gods

  396. the people ate

  397. and they bowed down

  398. before these gods

  399. and so Israel

  400. joined in worshipping

  401. the Baal of Peor

  402. and the Lord's

  403. anger burned

  404. against them

  405. see what happened

  406. the Israelite men

  407. were seduced

  408. into idolatrous worship

  409. which back in those days

  410. was nothing short

  411. of mass orgies

  412. and if you flick

  413. over to

  414. Numbers 31

    Numbers 31:15–16

  415. verses 15

  416. to 16

  417. it mentions

  418. these Moabite women

  419. again

  420. it says

  421. these were the ones

  422. who followed

  423. Balaam's advice

  424. and were the means

  425. of turning

  426. the Israelites

  427. away

  428. from the Lord

  429. in what happened

  430. at Peor

  431. so that a plague

  432. struck

  433. the Lord's people

  434. this whole plan

  435. was Balaam's idea

  436. and the plan

  437. worked a treat

  438. he could not

  439. get

  440. God

  441. to abandon

  442. his people

  443. so what he did

  444. was he came up

  445. with a scheme

  446. where God's people

  447. abandoned God

  448. and so God

  449. cursed his people

  450. for their

  451. compromise

  452. and their rebellion

  453. it seems here

  454. are similar things

  455. happening at Pergamon

  456. the people at Pergamon

  457. are offered

  458. one of two choices

  459. persecution

  460. like Antipas

  461. who will

  462. who remains

  463. steadfast

  464. in the name

  465. of Jesus

  466. or

  467. seduction

  468. a giving away

  469. a giving up

  470. this church

  471. had stood firm

  472. in the time

  473. at Antipas

  474. but now

  475. there's a threat

  476. of compromise

  477. not all of them

  478. there's a group

  479. there

  480. who are

  481. threatening

  482. to compromise

  483. they're being

  484. seduced

  485. by the city

  486. and

  487. by its culture

  488. and Jesus

  489. now says

  490. this church

  491. at Pergamon

  492. you've got

  493. some people

  494. in your midst

  495. the Nicolaitans

  496. who are teaching

  497. the same sort of thing

  498. that Balaam taught

  499. they're trying

  500. to encourage

  501. Christians

  502. to compromise

  503. don't take it

  504. so seriously

  505. it doesn't matter

  506. that much

  507. these Nicolaitans

  508. were at Ephesus

  509. and it's quite

  510. possible

  511. that they're

  512. at Thyatira

  513. the church

  514. for next week

  515. their leader

  516. is possibly

  517. the woman

  518. that John

  519. calls

  520. Jezebel

  521. in chapter 2

  522. verse 20

  523. who calls

  524. herself

  525. a prophetess

  526. but we see

  527. in chapter 2

  528. verse 6

  529. that Jesus

  530. was pleased

  531. with the

  532. Ephesians

  533. because they

  534. rejected the

  535. Nicolaitans

  536. it says

  537. but you had

  538. this in your

  539. favour

  540. you hate

  541. the practices

  542. of the

  543. Nicolaitans

  544. which I

  545. also

  546. hate

  547. but Pergamon

  548. they left

  549. the door

  550. open to

  551. it

  552. and what

  553. was almost

  554. certainly

  555. taught

  556. was syncretism

  557. a combination

  558. of religions

  559. a combining

  560. a coming

  561. together

  562. a tolerance

  563. of ideas

  564. that led

  565. to a tolerance

  566. of all sorts

  567. of different

  568. expressions

  569. and lifestyles

  570. it was a

  571. drawing together

  572. ultimately

  573. it was a

  574. lessening

  575. of sin

  576. what the

  577. Bible

  578. calls

  579. sin

  580. and a

  581. minimisation

  582. of the

  583. importance

  584. of Jesus

  585. in a word

  586. what these

  587. people were

  588. doing

  589. was compromising

  590. the Roman

  591. imperial cult

  592. included

  593. worship

  594. of the

  595. emperor

  596. and of

  597. the gods

  598. that would

  599. be

  600. inescapably

  601. idolatrous

  602. nothing short

  603. of just

  604. pure

  605. idolatry

  606. and there

  607. is no

  608. shortage

  609. of evidence

  610. that as

  611. they participate

  612. in their

  613. idolatry

  614. everything

  615. just descended

  616. into

  617. drunkard

  618. orgies

  619. and the

  620. teaching

  621. of the

  622. Nicolaitans

  623. probably

  624. validated

  625. a certain

  626. level of

  627. participation

  628. in this

  629. kind of

  630. civic

  631. life

  632. the

  633. celebrations

  634. of the

  635. city

  636. of

  637. Pergamum

  638. which

  639. would

  640. have

  641. been

  642. idolatrous

  643. and

  644. immoral

  645. it was

  646. causing

  647. the

  648. teaching

  649. was

  650. opening

  651. the

  652. door

  653. for

  654. God's

  655. people

  656. to

  657. compromise

  658. the

  659. 1924

  660. summer

  661. Olympics

  662. were hosted

  663. by the

  664. city

  665. of Paris

  666. Eric

  667. Little

  668. was a

  669. devout

  670. Christian

  671. who refused

  672. to run

  673. his heat

  674. in the

  675. 100 metre

  676. race

  677. because it

  678. was held

  679. on a

  680. Sunday

  681. it was

  682. his best

  683. event

  684. the schedule

  685. had been

  686. published

  687. several months

  688. in advance

  689. his decision

  690. was made

  691. several months

  692. in advance

  693. that he

  694. would not

  695. compromise

  696. his conscience

  697. and his

  698. principles

  699. and run

  700. on a

  701. Sunday

  702. and he

  703. came under

  704. enormous amount

  705. of pressure

  706. he's running

  707. for his

  708. country

  709. so

  710. enormous

  711. amount

  712. of pressure

  713. for him

  714. to

  715. it doesn't

  716. matter

  717. that much

  718. compromise

  719. just a bit

  720. I mean

  721. the Olympics

  722. only come

  723. around once

  724. in four

  725. years

  726. go to

  727. church

  728. next

  729. Sunday

  730. his decision

  731. was final

  732. he trained

  733. instead

  734. for what

  735. is now

  736. the 400

  737. metre

  738. race

  739. it wasn't

  740. his best

  741. race

  742. in fact

  743. far from

  744. it

  745. he was

  746. fairly

  747. mediocre

  748. at it

  749. and when

  750. the day

  751. of the

  752. Olympic

  753. 400 metre

  754. race

  755. came

  756. Liddell

  757. went to

  758. the starting

  759. blocks

  760. and as

  761. he went

  762. there

  763. one of

  764. the

  765. American

  766. Olympic

  767. team

  768. masseurs

  769. came to

  770. him

  771. and gave

  772. him

  773. a piece

  774. of paper

  775. and on

  776. that piece

  777. of paper

  778. was written

  779. 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 2:30

  780. 2

  781. verse 30

  782. those who

  783. honour me

  784. I will

  785. honour

  786. and that

  787. inspired him

  788. to run

  789. and to

  790. run

  791. hard

  792. you see

  793. he was

  794. prepared to

  795. give away

  796. a certain

  797. Olympic medal

  798. he was

  799. the favourite

  800. for the

  801. 100 metre

  802. gold medal

  803. he was

  804. prepared to

  805. give up

  806. an Olympic

  807. medal

  808. but he was

  809. not prepared

  810. to give up

  811. on his

  812. conscience

  813. he was

  814. not prepared

  815. to compromise

  816. and to sell

  817. out on

  818. Jesus

  819. and for him

  820. that was a

  821. drawing of

  822. the line

  823. as it

  824. turns out

  825. he ran

  826. hard

  827. and he

  828. won

  829. the

  830. gold

  831. medal

  832. for the

  833. 400

  834. those who

  835. honour

  836. me

  837. I will

  838. honour

  839. and Jesus

  840. says to this

  841. church at

  842. Pergamum

  843. I know

  844. where you

  845. live

  846. I know

  847. you're in

  848. Satan's

  849. domain

  850. I know

  851. where you

  852. live

  853. I know

  854. where I've

  855. put you

  856. the same

  857. evil one

  858. here at

  859. Pergamum

  860. is the

  861. ruler of

  862. the kingdom

  863. of the

  864. air

  865. he tried

  866. to tempt

  867. Jesus

  868. into

  869. compromising

  870. in Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  871. chapter 4

  872. he used

  873. Peter to

  874. try and

  875. dissuade

  876. Jesus

  877. from going

  878. to the

  879. cross

  880. and Jesus

  881. turns to

  882. his best

  883. mate

  884. and calls

  885. him by

  886. his worst

  887. enemy

  888. and says

  889. get behind

  890. me

  891. Satan

  892. this evil

  893. one

  894. masquerades

  895. as an

  896. angel of

  897. light

  898. forget all

  899. images of

  900. horns and

  901. tails and

  902. fire and

  903. all sorts of

  904. stuff like

  905. that

  906. he is

  907. a fast

  908. talking

  909. clean cut

  910. charming

  911. logical

  912. morally

  913. bankrupt

  914. con man

  915. he is

  916. the ruler

  917. of the

  918. kingdom

  919. of the

  920. air

  921. and he's

  922. at work

  923. in the

  924. world

  925. now

  926. and his

  927. desire

  928. if he

  929. cannot

  930. destroy

  931. you

  932. front up

  933. his

  934. desire

  935. will be

  936. to seduce

  937. you

  938. until you

  939. compromise

  940. until you

  941. compromise

  942. until you

  943. compromise

  944. and Jesus

  945. knows

  946. where you

  947. live

  948. he knows

  949. the pressure

  950. that you

  951. are under

  952. when you

  953. are confessing

  954. him at

  955. work

  956. he knows

  957. the pressure

  958. on the

  959. sporting field

  960. or university

  961. at home

  962. he knows

  963. it can mean

  964. loss and it

  965. can mean

  966. hardship and it

  967. can mean

  968. laughter and it

  969. can mean

  970. rejection

  971. exclusion

  972. he knows

  973. the pressure

  974. to sleep

  975. in on

  976. Sunday

  977. instead

  978. I'm

  979. deeply

  980. encouraged

  981. by

  982. friends

  983. of mine

  984. who made

  985. a decision

  986. early in

  987. their marriage

  988. and even

  989. when they

  990. had kids

  991. is that

  992. we'll be

  993. at church

  994. every Sunday

  995. we are

  996. physically

  997. able to

  998. be

  999. regardless

  1000. and I

  1001. said

  1002. why did

  1003. you make

  1004. that call

  1005. they said

  1006. we do

  1007. not trust

  1008. ourselves

  1009. we open

  1010. the door

  1011. just a

  1012. moment

  1013. particularly

  1014. for our

  1015. kids

  1016. just open

  1017. the door

  1018. for a

  1019. moment

  1020. and make

  1021. one excuse

  1022. we open

  1023. up the

  1024. floodgates

  1025. to make

  1026. all kinds

  1027. of excuses

  1028. Christians

  1029. in the

  1030. end

  1031. are people

  1032. who do

  1033. say no

  1034. there are

  1035. things that

  1036. we won't

  1037. believe

  1038. and there

  1039. are things

  1040. that we

  1041. won't do

  1042. and especially

  1043. we say no

  1044. if it means

  1045. saying no

  1046. to Jesus

  1047. and frankly

  1048. that is

  1049. hard

  1050. in our

  1051. culture

  1052. it is so

  1053. ironic

  1054. how a

  1055. soft

  1056. centered

  1057. tolerant

  1058. progressive

  1059. open and

  1060. permissive

  1061. society

  1062. can be

  1063. curiously

  1064. hard

  1065. on those

  1066. who refuse

  1067. to go

  1068. along

  1069. with them

  1070. they can

  1071. be curiously

  1072. hard and

  1073. intolerant

  1074. of those

  1075. who say

  1076. no

  1077. who won't

  1078. join

  1079. with them

  1080. and Jesus

  1081. says I

  1082. know where

  1083. I have

  1084. placed you

  1085. I

  1086. understand

  1087. but take

  1088. note

  1089. Jesus takes

  1090. compromise

  1091. very seriously

  1092. verse 16

  1093. he calls his

  1094. church to

  1095. repent

  1096. he calls

  1097. them to

  1098. turn their

  1099. back

  1100. on compromise

  1101. otherwise

  1102. he says

  1103. I will

  1104. come

  1105. to you

  1106. and will

  1107. fight

  1108. against them

  1109. with the

  1110. sword of

  1111. my mouth

  1112. the option

  1113. is either

  1114. be judged

  1115. by the

  1116. world

  1117. or be

  1118. judged

  1119. by Jesus

  1120. there is

  1121. no possibility

  1122. of laying

  1123. low

  1124. keeping your

  1125. head down

  1126. ducking

  1127. for cover

  1128. hoping the

  1129. trouble sort

  1130. of passes

  1131. God has

  1132. just as God

  1133. struck down

  1134. those who

  1135. compromised

  1136. in numbers

  1137. 25

  1138. those who

  1139. sin

  1140. so Jesus

  1141. threatens to

  1142. come and

  1143. fight against

  1144. those holding

  1145. to the

  1146. teaching

  1147. the

  1148. Nicolaitans

  1149. he will

  1150. fight

  1151. against

  1152. them

  1153. with the

  1154. sword

  1155. of his

  1156. mouth

  1157. is what

  1158. it says

  1159. which is

  1160. what is

  1161. announced

  1162. there at

  1163. the beginning

  1164. of this

  1165. section

  1166. in verse

  1167. 12

  1168. these are

  1169. the words

  1170. of him

  1171. who has

  1172. the sharp

  1173. double-edged

  1174. sword

  1175. we read

  1176. in chapter

  1177. 19

  1178. verse 15

  1179. that when

  1180. Jesus returns

  1181. in glory

  1182. from his

  1183. mouth

  1184. it says

  1185. comes a

  1186. sharp sword

  1187. which to

  1188. strike down

  1189. the

  1190. nations

  1191. rather than

  1192. I think

  1193. imagining

  1194. that Jesus

  1195. has this

  1196. sort of

  1197. sword

  1198. shaped

  1199. tongue

  1200. we should

  1201. see here

  1202. that what

  1203. he means

  1204. is that

  1205. Jesus

  1206. in the end

  1207. will speak

  1208. decisive words

  1209. of judgment

  1210. his words

  1211. will be

  1212. final

  1213. his judgment

  1214. is final

  1215. and in

  1216. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1217. chapter 6

  1218. where Paul

  1219. is encouraging

  1220. Christians to

  1221. stand firm

  1222. stay strong

  1223. with Jesus

  1224. and to stay

  1225. strong with

  1226. Jesus against

  1227. all the attacks

  1228. of the evil

  1229. one

  1230. he encourages

  1231. Christians to

  1232. take on the

  1233. armor of

  1234. God

  1235. and in

  1236. verse 17

  1237. of Ephesians

  1238. 6

  1239. it says

  1240. the sword

  1241. of the

  1242. spirit

  1243. is the

  1244. word of

  1245. God

  1246. and in

  1247. Hebrews

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1248. chapter 4

  1249. the word

  1250. of God

  1251. is a

  1252. living

  1253. and active

  1254. sharper

  1255. than any

  1256. double-edged

  1257. sword

  1258. it judges

  1259. the thoughts

  1260. and the

  1261. attitudes

  1262. of the

  1263. heart

  1264. ultimately

  1265. everything

  1266. will be

  1267. judged

  1268. according

  1269. to its

  1270. alignment

  1271. with

  1272. the

  1273. word

  1274. of

  1275. God

  1276. with

  1277. Jesus

  1278. word

  1279. and so

  1280. we're

  1281. called

  1282. here to

  1283. listen to

  1284. the

  1285. word

  1286. of

  1287. God

  1288. and

  1289. judge

  1290. everything

  1291. in

  1292. accordance

  1293. with

  1294. it

  1295. because

  1296. ultimately

  1297. everything

  1298. will be

  1299. judged

  1300. by

  1301. it

  1302. means

  1303. you judge

  1304. all

  1305. teaching

  1306. all

  1307. instruction

  1308. by

  1309. the

  1310. word

  1311. of

  1312. God

  1313. not

  1314. by the

  1315. word

  1316. of

  1317. Pergamum

  1318. not

  1319. what the

  1320. culture

  1321. is saying

  1322. what does

  1323. the word

  1324. of

  1325. God

  1326. say

  1327. that

  1328. is my

  1329. guide

  1330. that

  1331. is my

  1332. rule

  1333. that's

  1334. what

  1335. I

  1336. obey

  1337. let me

  1338. say that

  1339. every

  1340. person

  1341. that I

  1342. have seen

  1343. compromise

  1344. with sin

  1345. and eventually

  1346. walk away

  1347. from Jesus

  1348. has cut

  1349. themselves off

  1350. from listening

  1351. to the

  1352. word of

  1353. God

  1354. they only

  1355. listen to

  1356. teaching

  1357. that affirms

  1358. their view

  1359. they pull

  1360. back from

  1361. Bible reading

  1362. and from

  1363. Bible study

  1364. and from

  1365. other Christians

  1366. particularly

  1367. who challenge

  1368. them

  1369. they surround

  1370. themselves

  1371. with

  1372. people

  1373. who will

  1374. not

  1375. bring

  1376. the

  1377. scriptures

  1378. to bear

  1379. on their

  1380. lives

  1381. they pull

  1382. away

  1383. from

  1384. church

  1385. they reject

  1386. the word

  1387. of God

1388. now there is a promise here to those who overcome

1389. it's for those who repent and turn away from compromise

  1390. in verse 16

1391. he will come and fight with those who compromise and tarnish the name of Jesus

1392. but in verse 17 he will come and give manna and a white stone with a new name

1393. written on it known only to him who receives it

1394. now it's sort of difficult to know exactly what that means or both those things mean except to say it's it means good it's good stuff manna is that strange bread in that God gave to the people of Israel as they went in the wilderness he miraculously fed them day in day out and Jesus had in that that picture of God's miraculous provision of his people in the old testament when he said I am the bread of life

1395. all who come to me will never grow hungry

1396. and Jesus also said that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God

1397. and the word that brings judgment here is also the word that brings life forever

1398. and Jesus promises to be our feed to feed us for all of eternity to give us nourishing life and sustenance for all of eternity

1399. now the white stone with a name written on it is a little bit more confusing

1400. it was what they used to do to get access into the stadium

1401. we call it ticker tech nowadays

1402. they called it white stoner tech

1403. what they used to do is you get a white stone get your name on it that gave you entry into the stadium

1404. and what Jesus promised here is basically

1405. those who remain faithful to Jesus name will each be given a white stone by Jesus

1406. with a new name written on it

1407. and it will guarantee you access into his presence forever

  1408. that's the promise

1409. because God honours those who honour him

1410. one final challenge from this letter

1411. what is interesting in this text is it flows from plural to singular

1412. singular to plural all the way through

  1413. and

1414. only some of the people in this church

  1415. at Pergamum

1416. hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans

1417. but the letter comes to the whole church

  1418. the whole church

1419. and Jesus says I will come to you and deal with them

1420. and it points to the way that as members of the church

1421. we are both individually responsible for ourselves

1422. and corporate responsibility for other members of the body

1423. the whole church is being judged guilty

1424. because they aren't doing anything to discipline

1425. those who are holding to the teaching of Nicolaitans

1426. which threatens to unravel the whole thing

1427. they are failing to rebuke their brothers and sisters

1428. and repentance here is to take the form of the church

1429. pursuing a process of discipline

1430. with those who are holding to the teaching of the Nicolaitans

1431. and this process of discipline

1432. is motivated by a desire to keep Jesus

1433. from coming and fighting against them

1434. to keep Jesus from coming and judging them

1435. here the minority are compromising

1436. and the majority aren't doing anything about it

1437. and the call to this church at Pergamum

  1438. is dare to discipline

  1439. because compromise kills

1440. and so it's not just good enough for me

1441. and it's not just good enough for you

1442. to hold to the Bible's truth

1443. we must watch out for each other's lives

1444. you must watch out for me

1445. and I must watch out for you

1446. you must watch out for each other

  1447. do you love Jesus?

1448. do you love the honour of his name

1449. and your brothers and sisters

1450. enough to speak the truth to them?

1451. to nip it in the bud early

1452. when things start to arise

1453. and say my brother, my sister

1454. you are in a dangerous place right now

1455. so much is at stake for you

1456. now I suspect there are those amongst us

1457. who have never done that

  1458. and may have been

1459. potentially been Christians for years

  1460. never in love

1461. pulled up another Christian brother and sister

  1462. and actually raised

  1463. privately with them

  1464. raised an issue

  1465. of wrong understanding

  1466. wrong thinking

  1467. or wrong living

  1468. maybe we're being fed

1469. by our culture too much

  1470. we go

  1471. all that stuff's private

  1472. you know

1473. you can't tell me how to live

  1474. it's my own business

1475. I think the Bible calls us to it

  1476. maybe we think

1477. it's the pastor's job to do it

1478. it's my job to do it

  1479. it's interesting

1480. when I first came here

  1481. I had two

  1482. people separately

  1483. pull me aside

  1484. and ask me

1485. what I was going to do

1486. with so and so over there

  1487. another person

1488. and I asked both of them

1489. who had known the person

  1490. for decades

1491. what have you done so far?

  1492. nothing

  1493. nothing's been done

1494. and I've been here for months

1495. and you expect me to

  1496. if something was done

  1497. decades ago

1498. we might not have the same issue

  1499. we've got right now

1500. let me say that I am

  1501. incredibly grateful

  1502. to the people

  1503. in my life

  1504. who have spoken

1505. who have had the courage

1506. to speak words of truth

  1507. to me

  1508. someone in love

  1509. pulled me aside

  1510. for my questionable

  1511. humour

  1512. in fact right now

  1513. I'd say it's not

  1514. questionable at all

  1515. they were right

  1516. I was wrong

1517. I'm glad they said it

  1518. someone in love

  1519. pulled me up

1520. this is just a few examples

  1521. keep going really

  1522. pulled me up for

  1523. demeaning a young person

  1524. once

  1525. putting them down

  1526. inappropriately

  1527. with my humour

  1528. and they were right

  1529. I had a potential

  1530. to crush someone

  1531. who I ought not

1532. have been doing that to

  1533. someone asked me

  1534. once

  1535. whether I

  1536. whether I thought

  1537. I was spending

  1538. too much time

  1539. with a person

  1540. of the opposite sex

  1541. particular person

  1542. they thought I was

  1543. I'm really glad

1544. that they spoke to me

  1545. I'm grateful

  1546. because frankly

  1547. my heart will do

1548. all sorts of back flips

  1549. and gymnastic contortions

  1550. to justify itself

1551. it will just do that

1552. I need to add here

1553. I don't want to be spoken to

1554. by people who are angry

  1555. people who have got

  1556. agendas to drive

  1557. people who are whingers

  1558. I don't need people

  1559. to rebuke me

  1560. who really enjoy rebuking

1561. I want people to come to me

  1562. with tears

  1563. with their heart

  1564. being ripped out

  1565. in love for me

  1566. love for Christ

1567. and the glory of his name

  1568. but I need them

  1569. to do it anyway

1570. I need them to do that

  1571. for the promise

  1572. for those who overcome

  1573. is so important

  1574. that we need

  1575. a church culture

  1576. where we allow others

  1577. to open the Bible

  1578. and speak to us

  1579. and where we will

  1580. actually speak to them

  1581. as well

1582. where we have the courage

  1583. to speak to others

  1584. because frankly

  1585. I want to be

  1586. an overcomer

1587. I want to get that

  1588. white stone

  1589. whatever it is

  1590. I just know it's good

  1591. our core values

  1592. of humble authenticity

  1593. and treasuring Jesus

  1594. reflects

  1595. the sort of culture

  1596. we need

  1597. at St Paul's

  1598. a culture

  1599. where we

  1600. communicate

  1601. with honesty

  1602. authenticity

  1603. transparency

  1604. with vulnerability

  1605. of our imperfections

  1606. a culture

  1607. where we will

  1608. covenant together

  1609. make a commitment

  1610. together

  1611. to watch over

  1612. each other's lives

  1613. with vigilance

  1614. and accountability

  1615. we need

  1616. to help each other

  1617. to become

  1618. overcomers

  1619. and sometimes

  1620. helping each other

  1621. become overcomers

  1622. means

  1623. a difficult conversation

  1624. may we have the

  1625. humility

  1626. to own it

  1627. and accept it

  1628. and hear it

  1629. my brothers and

  1630. sisters

  1631. do you have

  1632. ears

  1633. to hear what

  1634. the spirit

  1635. says

  1636. to this church

  1637. St Paul's

  1638. Amen
