  1. What matters most in life is what other people think of me.

  2. What do you think of this statement?

  3. What matters most in life is what other people think of me.

  4. Do you think this way?

  5. Maybe unintentionally sometimes?

  6. I want to have a really good reputation.

  7. I want other people to think of me highly.

  8. That's how I'll get a pay increase.

  9. That's how I'll get that promotion.

  10. That's how I'll get that girl to notice me.

  11. I'll have a great reputation.

  12. I'll make myself look better to the boss.

  13. I'll get to work really early.

  14. I'll leave late.

  15. I might try and dress up for the girl and for the boss maybe.

  16. Do you ever think this way?

  17. How about this statement?

  18. What matters most in life is what God thinks of me.

  19. This one is a bit scarier.

  20. What matters most in life is what God thinks of me.

  21. Who here could say that they are concerned about what God thinks about them all the time?

  22. Not me.

  23. I want to be able to say this.

  24. I wish this was true.

  25. But it's not.

  26. And it's scary because God sees everything.

  27. It's not like I can just do a couple of nice things.

  28. Look pretty good on the outside.

  29. Wear some fashionable clothes.

  30. And God's going to think all of a sudden that I'm a good guy.

  31. What is your reputation before God?

  32. Today we're continuing in our series in the book of Revelation.

  33. And we're looking at Jesus' letter to the city and to the church of Sardis.

  34. And Jesus knows all about this city's reputation.

  35. And he has some hard words for them.

  36. So we're going to see what Jesus says to Sardis

  37. before we see what Jesus has to say to us.

  38. So please have your Bibles open at Revelation chapter 3 verse 1.

    Revelation 3:1

  39. To the angel of the church in Sardis write,

  40. These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

  41. I know your deeds.

  42. You have a reputation of being alive.

  43. But you are dead.

  44. The church in Sardis had a reputation.

  45. They looked alive.

  46. There were outward signs of vigor and spirituality.

  47. People would have exclaimed,

  48. Oh, this church, they're so healthy.

  49. They're so vibrant.

  50. They're so alive.

  51. There's so much happening.

  52. They would have looked like paradise to some of the other churches.

  53. To the other churches in the area who were facing persecution,

  54. Sardis would have been like a holiday destination of a church.

  55. They're so vibrant.

  56. They're growing.

  57. Their preaching is so entertaining and short.

  58. Their whole church service doesn't even go for an hour.

  59. Praise Jesus.

  60. The other churches we've heard about in Revelation,

  61. Well, they're doing it tough.

  62. You can imagine them saying,

  63. I wish I was at that church in Sardis.

  64. I wish I lived in that city so I wasn't faced with the persecution,

  65. with the poverty, with the starvation and fear of death that I'm facing.

  66. Because there's something unique about this city.

  67. This church in Sardis.

  68. There is no persecution mentioned.

  69. In all of these letters to the different cities,

  70. there's persecution mentioned in all of them except here in Sardis.

  71. The church at Ephesus was struggling with evil people.

  72. In Smyrna, there was tribulation and poverty.

  73. In Pergamum, Jesus says that Satan has power over this place.

  74. And in Thyatira, we saw last week,

  75. they're faced with the sexual immorality of Jezebel.

  76. And to each of these cities, even though there's persecution,

  77. Jesus has something positive to say.

  78. But when we get to Sardis, it's a different story.

  79. Jesus has nothing positive to say about this city.

  80. Instead, Jesus says,

  81. I know your works.

  82. You have the reputation of being alive.

  83. But you are dead.

  84. You are a dead church.

  85. You have it easy.

  86. There's no persecution from outside.

  87. To all the world, you look like a healthy, vibrant church.

  88. But really, you are a husk of a church.

  89. Once alive, but now dead.

  90. This reputation that this church has,

  91. it's just all fake.

  92. It's just all lies.

  93. Because the problem is,

  94. there's a gap between their reputation and reality.

  95. Sardis has a very different reputation with God.

  96. Have a look at the second part of verse 2 with me.

  97. For I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

  98. The church is obviously busy,

  99. doing all kinds of works,

  100. probably very good works,

  101. feeding the poor,

  102. going to church every day,

  103. reading the Bible.

  104. But before God,

  105. their works were not complete.

  106. They were just going through the motions.

  107. Their works are not the result of obedience and repentance.

  108. From the outside,

  109. they looked like they were doing what churches do,

  110. following God.

  111. But to God,

  112. they were fake.

  113. Just going through the motions.

  114. Jesus says in verse 4,

  115. that there are still a few

  116. who hadn't let death overtake them.

  117. There are still a few who were following Jesus.

  118. And they're described as not having soiled their clothes.

  119. It's a really graphic image.

  120. You know,

  121. I've got two little children.

  122. I can tell you what soiled clothes look like.

  123. It's very graphic.

  124. These people have not let defilement come in.

  125. The implication for the rest of the church is,

  126. defilement sin has crept in.

  127. They have soiled their clothes with it.

  128. And it's made a mess of their lives.

  129. The sin of the other cities was obvious.

  130. They were worshipping other gods.

  131. They were sexually immoral.

  132. But here,

  133. the sin of Sardis was more subtle.

  134. It was hidden.

  135. And the problem is that the church had gotten lazy.

  136. They'd been convinced that their busyness

  137. was a sign that they were healthy.

  138. They had a reputation that they were alive.

  139. And they were convinced by their own reputation.

  140. It seems that they hadn't checked their heart before God.

  141. They hadn't asked the question,

  142. are we just turning up to church on Sunday?

  143. Or are we being passionate about Jesus,

  144. wanting to do His will,

  145. and to love and serve Him?

  146. Or are we just going through the motions?

  147. We would probably call these people nominal Christians.

  148. People who just turn up on Sunday.

  149. Maybe they give money.

  150. Maybe they go along to Bible study.

  151. Maybe they even get involved in things like

  152. supper and going out afterwards.

  153. Maybe they read the Bible.

  154. Maybe they help out when they need it.

  155. They know the right words to say.

  156. They know what it looks like to be a Christian.

  157. They look right.

  158. They sound right.

  159. They smell right.

  160. But they don't live out that obedience to Jesus.

  161. There's a gap between the head and the heart.

  162. It's a thing that happens on Sundays

  163. and they don't love Jesus.

  164. There is no heart connection.

  165. This behavior,

  166. it's really hypocrisy.

  167. Saying one thing and doing another.

  168. The church in Sardis,

  169. they thought,

  170. look, I'm going through the motions.

  171. I'm doing these things

  172. and therefore God must live.

  173. If I tick these boxes,

  174. I'm all right with God.

  175. This church had forgotten what they had heard.

  176. They had turned away and forgotten about Jesus.

  177. These are hard words to hear.

  178. Everything you've been doing as a church has been a waste.

  179. You think you've been loving God,

  180. but you as a church are dead.

  181. This is damning.

  182. And it's probably the hardest words

  183. that Jesus has to say to any of these cities.

  184. But Jesus doesn't leave them there in this position.

  185. He gives them some words.

  186. He gives them some things to wake up.

  187. And the first of them,

  188. have a look in verse 2 again.

  189. He says,

  190. wake up.

  191. Or more literally,

  192. it's watch out.

  193. Watch out.

  194. Now, if you came from Sardis,

  195. these words,

  196. watch out,

  197. would have a very special meaning for you.

  198. Let me just give you a brief picture

  199. of Sardis' history.

  200. The city of Sardis

  201. actually had a wonderful reputation.

  202. At one point,

  203. they were one of the most powerful cities.

  204. The city,

  205. the majority of the city,

  206. was located on top of a mountain,

  207. Mount Tmolus.

  208. And it had these massive walls.

  209. Walls that were over 1,500 feet high.

  210. If you don't know the measurement feet,

  211. that means it's really big walls.

  212. And this city,

  213. they just had the reputation

  214. that you don't mess with Sardis.

  215. You can't get through these walls.

  216. So armies didn't come against them

  217. because they had this reputation

  218. of being totally impenetrable.

  219. But twice in its history,

  220. first by Cyrus in the 6th century

  221. and then by Antiochus the Great

  222. in the 3rd century,

  223. they overtook this city.

  224. Not by sending a massive army

  225. against these walls,

  226. but by sending a few men

  227. to climb up over the wall

  228. when no one was looking

  229. to open the gates

  230. to let the army in.

  231. The failure of the city of Sardis

  232. was that they didn't watch out.

  233. They didn't have people watching the walls

  234. for that subtle hidden attack

  235. from their enemy.

  236. They thought they were invincible.

  237. They believed their own reputation.

  238. So when Jesus says to the church in Sardis,

  239. watch out,

  240. it's a reminder

  241. of what had happened to this city.

  242. Watch out for sin

  243. that has crept into your lives,

  244. which has climbed over the walls

  245. of your defences

  246. when you weren't looking

  247. and has rotted you out

  248. like a worm

  249. in a piece of fruit.

  250. Don't be lazy.

  251. Watch out.

  252. Don't think all is well.

  253. Don't think your Christian faith

  254. won't be tested.

  255. So Sardis needs to watch out

  256. because they've become complacent.

  257. The second thing that Jesus says

  258. is to strengthen what remains,

  259. again in verse 2.

  260. Strengthen what remains.

  261. There are still some

  262. in the city

  263. and in the church of Sardis

  264. who are following Jesus.

  265. And the command is that

  266. they are to strengthen

  267. what remains.

  268. Exhort the others in the church

  269. to watchfulness.

  270. A strong church

  271. will care for each brother and sister.

  272. If you're a committed Christian,

  273. you can't just worry about yourself.

  274. That's the Western individualistic lie

  275. that we live in.

  276. But you're to encourage,

  277. to rebuke,

  278. to love your brothers and sisters.

  279. When you see your brother or sister sinning,

  280. tell them to stop.

  281. Make sure that the church

  282. doesn't get infested

  283. with hollowed out Christians.

  284. People who come along to church

  285. and confess his name

  286. with their mouths,

  287. but throughout the week

  288. they just worship themselves.

  289. Worshiping other gods

  290. or worshiping themselves

  291. with their time and money.

  292. The Christians

  293. in the city of Sardis

  294. should have been

  295. watching out for themselves

  296. and for their brothers and sisters

  297. to encourage

  298. what remained.

  299. And the third imperative

  300. that Jesus gives

  301. to fix this church,

  302. he says it in verse 3,

  303. Remember.

  304. Remember what you have received

  305. and heard.

  306. Remember the gospel.

  307. That's what they had heard.

  308. The good news

  309. that Jesus died and rose.

  310. And what did they receive?

  311. Well, they'd receive forgiveness,

  312. new life,

  313. the promise of resurrection

  314. with Jesus

  315. and the presence

  316. of the Holy Spirit

  317. dwelling within.

  318. Don't forget this.

  319. Coe, where are you?

  320. Brother, for you today,

  321. don't forget today.

  322. Don't forget today's date.

  323. It's the 31st of August, 2014.

  324. Have that tattooed

  325. on the back of your hand,

  326. maybe the back of your eyelid.

  327. So when you close your eyes,

  328. you're reminded of today.

  329. Because today is the day

  330. you have heard the gospel.

  331. Today is the day

  332. where you stood right here

  333. and were baptized

  334. and you said,

  335. I'm going to follow Jesus.

  336. Today is the day

  337. that I am going to turn away

  338. from my sin

  339. and I'm going to turn to Jesus

  340. and follow Him.

  341. In years to come,

  342. when it gets difficult,

  343. following Jesus is hard.

  344. Remember the gospel

  345. you have heard today.

  346. For those of us

  347. who have been Christians

  348. for a while,

  349. remember that time

  350. when you first

  351. took ownership of God.

  352. Whether it was

  353. five years ago,

  354. 10, 20, 50,

  355. I don't care what it is.

  356. Remember when you first

  357. heard the gospel.

  358. This shouldn't make us

  359. feel guilty,

  360. but it's a reminder

  361. of what God

  362. has been doing

  363. in us,

  364. for us.

  365. And could it be

  366. that for this church

  367. and for us

  368. that they should remember

  369. the passion

  370. and faithfulness

  371. which they had

  372. initially accepted

  373. the gospel?

  374. When they were first

  375. on fire for Jesus,

  376. when they gave away

  377. their possessions

  378. when it hurt,

  379. when they loved Jesus

  380. even in the face

  381. of opposition,

  382. the way that they lived

  383. until sin

  384. crept over their walls

  385. and hollowed them out

  386. from the inside.

  387. Instead,

  388. turn away from the world,

  389. live a life transformed

  390. by Jesus,

  391. not one

  392. worshipping idols.

  393. Instead,

  394. again,

  395. the next thing Jesus says

  396. is to obey the gospel,

  397. obey it

  398. and repent.

  399. Jesus calls on

  400. this dead church

  401. to turn away

  402. from their life of sin,

  403. their false worship,

  404. their routine of church

  405. which is not really church.

  406. Renew their worship

  407. of Jesus.

  408. I think this is

  409. one of the hardest parts

  410. of being a Christian,

  411. consistently considering

  412. your heart

  413. and your actions

  414. before God

  415. through His Spirit.

  416. our desires

  417. quickly and easily

  418. get defiled

  419. by sin

  420. which creeps

  421. into our lives

  422. like an attack

  423. over the wall

  424. of Sardis.

  425. We're bombarded

  426. by sexualized images

  427. in media,

  428. on billboards

  429. and so that step

  430. to looking at pornography

  431. is so much smaller

  432. and easier.

  433. we get into

  434. dangerous patterns

  435. where sin

  436. creeps in

  437. and we don't

  438. consider God.

  439. Our heart

  440. and our desires

  441. get perverted

  442. and it happens

  443. subtly.

  444. Let me share

  445. something that

  446. happened to me

  447. earlier in the year.

  448. I don't mind

  449. a drink of alcohol

  450. occasionally

  451. as long as you're

  452. over 18.

  453. You know,

  454. a glass of wine

  455. or a beer

  456. on occasions.

  457. I don't think

  458. there's necessarily

  459. anything wrong

  460. with these things

  461. but I suppose

  462. it depends

  463. on the person.

  464. But what happened

  465. for me

  466. was a difficult

  467. thing.

  468. I'm sure

  469. many of you,

  470. well not many of you,

  471. I'm sure some of you

  472. have had real struggles

  473. in the big scheme

  474. of things.

  475. Mine is quite small

  476. but what happened

  477. for me is that

  478. Alyssa has been

  479. studying the diploma

  480. in Bible and ministry

  481. through,

  482. well college,

  483. on a Wednesday night

  484. and so Alyssa

  485. would go out

  486. on a Wednesday night,

  487. I would put Isaac

  488. to bed and I would

  489. have these glorious

  490. two hours where I

  491. could watch whatever

  492. I want on TV.

  493. I could relax,

  494. I didn't have to

  495. watch MasterChef or

  496. whatever Alyssa

  497. usually watches.

  498. And so I would

  499. relax and I'd have

  500. a drink.

  501. It could be a glass

  502. of wine,

  503. a beer and

  504. you know,

  505. maybe just one

  506. or two.

  507. It wasn't that

  508. many a week.

  509. You know,

  510. I might have one

  511. on a night.

  512. I wasn't getting

  513. drunk.

  514. I didn't become

  515. an alcoholic.

  516. But what happened

  517. was I began to

  518. tie relaxing

  519. with having a

  520. drink.

  521. And so when I

  522. wanted to relax

  523. on the weekend,

  524. well I'd have a

  525. drink.

  526. And I noticed

  527. all of a sudden

  528. that I was heading

  529. down a dangerous

  530. path.

  531. I noticed

  532. that if I

  533. continued in

  534. the pattern

  535. I was setting,

  536. it would get

  537. dangerous for me.

  538. So I took

  539. a month off

  540. alcohol.

  541. I just wanted

  542. to kill

  543. this relationship

  544. I had with

  545. relaxation.

  546. I didn't

  547. become an

  548. alcoholic and

  549. I'm not

  550. necessarily saying

  551. there's anything

  552. wrong with it.

  553. But for me,

  554. at this point,

  555. I noticed it

  556. was becoming

  557. a dangerous

  558. habit.

  559. Because our

  560. desires quickly

  561. and easily get

  562. defiled by sin.

  563. It creeps into

  564. our lives like

  565. an attack over

  566. the wall when

  567. we're not

  568. watching.

  569. We need to

  570. continually obey

  571. God, to

  572. repent, to

  573. turn away from

  574. our sin.

  575. For those who

  576. do repent,

  577. Jesus calls them

  578. conquerors.

  579. Have a look at

  580. verse 5 with

  581. me.

  582. The one who

  583. conquers will

  584. be clothed

  585. thus in

  586. white garments

  587. and I will

  588. never blot his

  589. name out of

  590. the book of

  591. life.

  592. I will confess

  593. his name before

  594. my father and

  595. before his

  596. angels.

  597. Clothed in

  598. white,

  599. purified,

  600. there is no

  601. more sin

  602. attached to

  603. them.

  604. Written in

  605. the book of

  606. life.

  607. I'm not sure

  608. if there is a

  609. literal book

  610. that God

  611. writes in.

  612. I don't think

  613. it really

  614. matters.

  615. but what is

  616. important here

  617. is the

  618. assurance that

  619. Jesus gives.

  620. It is

  621. worthwhile

  622. turning aside

  623. from the

  624. world and

  625. following Jesus

  626. because we

  627. can have

  628. assurance that

  629. we will have

  630. new life with

  631. him.

  632. Jesus will

  633. tell his

  634. father about

  635. us.

  636. We will have

  637. the absolute

  638. best reputation.

  639. We will be

  640. given white

  641. garments we

  642. don't deserve,

  643. a reputation

  644. we don't

  645. deserve,

  646. because it

  647. will be

  648. Christ's

  649. reputation.

  650. And that

  651. is the

  652. one which

  653. God will

  654. see.

  655. So there

  656. is some

  657. hope for

  658. this church

  659. of Sardis.

  660. While they

  661. are dead,

  662. if they

  663. repent and

  664. turn back

  665. to Jesus,

  666. there is

  667. hope.

  668. But if

  669. they don't,

  670. there is

  671. judgment

  672. coming for

  673. them.

  674. Have a look

  675. again at

  676. verse 3

  677. with me.

  678. Jesus

  679. says he

  680. will come

  681. to

  682. Sardis

  683. in

  684. judgment,

  685. just like

  686. the

  687. judgment

  688. and the

  689. attacks that

  690. came against

  691. the city

  692. of Sardis.

  693. They came

  694. unexpectedly,

  695. secretly in

  696. the night,

  697. scaling over

  698. the wall,

  699. and Jesus

  700. says he

  701. will come

  702. unexpectedly.

  703. If they

  704. don't repent

  705. and turn

  706. back to

  707. him,

  708. he will

  709. come in

  710. judgment.

  711. So the

  712. question I

  713. asked at

  714. the start,

  715. let me ask

  716. that question

  717. again,

  718. what is

  719. your reputation

  720. before God?

  721. If Jesus

  722. was writing

  723. a letter to

  724. this city

  725. and to

  726. this church

  727. and to

  728. you

  729. specifically,

  730. what would

  731. he say?

  732. would he

  733. say,

  734. I know

  735. your deeds.

  736. You look

  737. alive,

  738. but you

  739. are dead.

  740. I have

  741. found you

  742. wanting in

  743. the sight

  744. of God.

  745. You are

  746. just going

  747. through the

  748. motions.

  749. You are

  750. going to

  751. church when

  752. you feel

  753. like it.

  754. You

  755. consider

  756. once a

  757. month

  758. regular.

  759. How can

  760. you hear

  761. my words

  762. and follow

  763. me if

  764. you're not

  765. being encouraged

  766. with your

  767. brothers and

  768. sisters to

  769. do that?

  770. How can

  771. you help

  772. love and

  773. build others

  774. up in the

  775. church if

  776. you're not

  777. even there?

  778. Would

  779. Jesus say,

  780. I love

  781. you and

  782. I want

  783. you to

  784. know what

  785. I do

  786. for you and

  787. what I

  788. will do

  789. for you.

  790. I want

  791. you to

  792. know how

  793. much pain

  794. I went

  795. through on

  796. the cross.

  797. But you

  798. do not

  799. remember what

  800. you have

  801. heard.

  802. You have

  803. blocked the

  804. gospel from

  805. going to

  806. your ears

  807. because you

  808. have heard

  809. it all

  810. before and

  811. you think

  812. you know

  813. it.

  814. Would

  815. Jesus say

  816. you have

  817. become a

  818. hollowed out

  819. husk of

  820. a Christian?

  821. See the

  822. problem is

  823. we're prideful.

  824. We sin and

  825. say that

  826. everything is

  827. okay.

  828. Have you

  829. heard of the

  830. miracle of

  831. the car park,

  832. the church

  833. car park?

  834. This is the

  835. miracle where

  836. as a family

  837. you're in the

  838. car on the

  839. way to church

  840. and you're

  841. having a

  842. massive argument.

  843. It could be

  844. about anything.

  845. The colour

  846. of the

  847. sheets,

  848. whatever it

  849. is.

  850. You're

  851. having this

  852. massive

  853. argument.

  854. As soon as

  855. you get to

  856. church,

  857. you're putting

  858. your happy

  859. faces.

  860. Everything's

  861. fine.

  862. We're

  863. Christians.

  864. We're

  865. wonderful

  866. people.

  867. We're

  868. always fine.

  869. You go

  870. to church,

  871. you pretend

  872. everything is

  873. fine and

  874. normal in

  875. your house,

  876. you get

  877. back in

  878. the car and

  879. as soon as

  880. you're out on

  881. the street,

  882. that argument

  883. starts again.

  884. It's just

  885. pride.

  886. It's the

  887. sin of

  888. Sardis.

  889. We think

  890. we've got

  891. everything

  892. together.

  893. We think

  894. that

  895. everything's

  896. fine.

  897. We don't

  898. want to be

  899. honest and

  900. reveal our

  901. sin to

  902. other people.

  903. That would

  904. just be too

  905. humiliating.

  906. We think

  907. we're alive,

  908. but really

  909. we're in

  910. trouble of

  911. being dead

  912. because we

  913. won't confront

  914. our own

  915. sin.

  916. Repent

  917. of your

  918. sin.

  919. You don't

  920. have to

  921. pretend

  922. everything is

  923. alright,

  924. especially when

  925. you come to

  926. church.

  927. If you can't

  928. be honest

  929. with the

  930. people at

  931. church who

  932. go through

  933. the same

  934. thing and

  935. love you,

  936. how are

  937. you going

  938. to do

  939. it in

  940. the rest

  941. of the

  942. world?

  943. If you

  944. want to

  945. confess,

  946. you can

  947. come up

  948. the front

  949. after church

  950. and pray

  951. with us.

  952. Because

  953. Jesus doesn't

  954. want a

  955. church who

  956. appears healthy

  957. on the

  958. outside,

  959. but he

  960. wants honest

  961. people who

  962. through his

  963. love and

  964. grace consider

  965. their actions,

  966. consider their

  967. hearts and

  968. repent.

  969. sin.

  970. They turn

  971. away from

  972. their sin.

  973. They don't

  974. just look

  975. healthy on

  976. the outside

  977. but are

  978. fakes,

  979. but are

  980. honest before

  981. God.

  982. Let me be

  983. completely honest

  984. with you.

  985. Removing

  986. sin and

  987. turning to

  988. God, it's

  989. hard.

  990. It hurts.

  991. It hurts to

  992. cut sin out

  993. of our lives.

  994. Let me tell

  995. you another

  996. story from my

  997. life a little

  998. bit more

  999. recently.

  1000. I'm sorry if

  1001. this feels like

  1002. I'm confessing

  1003. all my sin to

  1004. you and I

  1005. just have

  1006. this urge

  1007. to tell you.

  1008. I hope you

  1009. can take

  1010. something from

  1011. the pain I've

  1012. gone through

  1013. and not go

  1014. through that

  1015. same pain

  1016. yourself.

  1017. Our household

  1018. is a smacking

  1019. household.

  1020. That's for

  1021. Isaac, our

  1022. two and a

  1023. half year old,

  1024. not for

  1025. Tamara, the

  1026. four week

  1027. old.

  1028. She's perfect,

  1029. she can't do

  1030. anything wrong,

  1031. so I'm sure

  1032. that will

  1033. change.

  1034. I'm not sure

  1035. what you think

  1036. of this.

  1037. If it's really

  1038. an issue for

  1039. you, we can

  1040. talk about it

  1041. later.

  1042. But we

  1043. think with

  1044. Isaac that

  1045. it helps

  1046. him to

  1047. understand the

  1048. seriousness of

  1049. some of the

  1050. things he does.

  1051. So if he's

  1052. trying to put

  1053. his fingers

  1054. into a fan,

  1055. we say,

  1056. Isaac, don't

  1057. do that.

  1058. If he tries

  1059. it again, we

  1060. say, Isaac,

  1061. don't do that.

  1062. That will hurt

  1063. you.

  1064. You'll lose a

  1065. finger.

  1066. There'll be blood

  1067. everywhere.

  1068. If you do it

  1069. again, we're

  1070. going to smack

  1071. you.

  1072. If he does it

  1073. again, we smack

  1074. him.

  1075. It had been

  1076. working well,

  1077. but until

  1078. recently, when

  1079. parenting Isaac,

  1080. I had let

  1081. sin creep in.

  1082. Sin had

  1083. climbed in

  1084. over the

  1085. walls and

  1086. attacked the

  1087. way I

  1088. disciplined him.

  1089. Instead of

  1090. smacking Isaac

  1091. out of love,

  1092. I began to

  1093. do it out of

  1094. frustration and

  1095. anger.

  1096. Things had

  1097. gotten more

  1098. difficult just

  1099. before we had

  1100. Tamara.

  1101. That's not an

  1102. excuse.

  1103. It's just

  1104. things had

  1105. tried my

  1106. patience

  1107. continually and

  1108. I was not

  1109. up to it.

  1110. Isaac was

  1111. still often

  1112. warned and

  1113. he still often

  1114. needed to be

  1115. smacked, but

  1116. I began to

  1117. let my

  1118. frustration and

  1119. anger show

  1120. when I

  1121. disciplined

  1122. him.

  1123. I was

  1124. confronted with

  1125. my sin before

  1126. God and I

  1127. thought, how

  1128. can I deal

  1129. with my

  1130. little son?

  1131. How can I

  1132. deal with him

  1133. in anger when

  1134. my God, my

  1135. father in

  1136. heaven who

  1137. loves me, sent

  1138. his son to

  1139. die for me?

  1140. How can I do

  1141. that to this

  1142. little boy?

  1143. So I decided I

  1144. couldn't do it

  1145. anymore.

  1146. I'm taking a

  1147. time off

  1148. smacking.

  1149. It's much

  1150. more labor

  1151. intensive.

  1152. I told

  1153. Alyssa this.

  1154. She had no

  1155. idea what had

  1156. been going on

  1157. inside me.

  1158. My sin was

  1159. hidden even

  1160. from my wife,

  1161. but not from

  1162. my God.

  1163. let's not

  1164. be a church

  1165. who pretends

  1166. everything is

  1167. fine, resting

  1168. on our

  1169. reputation that

  1170. we have.

  1171. Yeah, we're a

  1172. church that's

  1173. alive.

  1174. Let's not

  1175. rest on that.

  1176. Let's consider

  1177. our hearts and

  1178. do the painful

  1179. work through

  1180. God's grace and

  1181. through his

  1182. spirit of

  1183. cutting sin

  1184. out.

  1185. Watch out

  1186. for sin

  1187. creeping into

  1188. your life.

  1189. watch out

  1190. for your

  1191. brother and

  1192. sister.

  1193. If you

  1194. can't see

  1195. any sin in

  1196. your brother

  1197. or sister's

  1198. life, ask

  1199. them what

  1200. they're struggling

  1201. with.

  1202. What kind

  1203. of reputation

  1204. will you have

  1205. before God?

  1206. Will Jesus

  1207. say, you have

  1208. just gone

  1209. through the

  1210. motions, you

  1211. have not

  1212. loved me?

  1213. Will he say

  1214. that we are a

  1215. dead church?

  1216. Or will he say,

  1217. well done,

  1218. good and

  1219. faithful servants?

  1220. God's grace.

  1221. Let's pray that

  1222. we would allow

  1223. God's grace to

  1224. continue to work

  1225. in us so that

  1226. we can be more

  1227. like him each

  1228. day.

  1229. Let's pray.

  1230. Heavenly

  1231. Father, we

  1232. thank you for

  1233. your word.

  1234. We thank you

  1235. for the

  1236. warning to

  1237. Sardis and

  1238. the warning

  1239. to us.

  1240. Help us not

  1241. be complacent in

  1242. our sin.

  1243. Help us

  1244. consider our

  1245. hearts.

  1246. love you

  1247. and turn

  1248. aside from

  1249. everything that

  1250. gets in the

  1251. way.

  1252. Through your

  1253. son's name we

  1254. pray.

  1255. Amen.

  1256. Amen.
