  1. And he says,

  2. I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot.

  3. I wish that you were cold or hot.

  4. So because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold,

  5. I'm going to vomit you out of my mouth.

  6. And I've got to tell you, when the subject of vomit comes up,

  7. I cannot get past the memory of our family going home to Weewar

  8. after holidays in Yamba.

  9. We were inland, we had to travel over the Great Dividing Range to get home

  10. and that meant five children in the car, winding roads and gentle heat.

  11. And one of our kids didn't handle warm days and winding roads very well

  12. and neither did I when I was a kid.

  13. A lot of experiences won't even tell you about me.

  14. You can ask my mum and I won't let her tell you.

  15. But Kerry was prepared for the journey ahead.

  16. She gave the child an ice cream bucket.

  17. She gave them some chewing gum to keep them occupied and away we went.

  18. And halfway up the mountain, the inevitable happened,

  19. the pale and clammy expression,

  20. the sudden noise and vomit all through the back of the car.

  21. When I was at high school, we called that a technicolour yawn.

  22. Why didn't you use the bucket?

  23. Well, they did.

  24. They took the chewing gum out of their mouth

  25. and put it in the bucket for safekeeping

  26. and vomited into the car.

  27. Policeman pulled us over a few hours later.

  28. One of the lights on the trailer wasn't on.

  29. He stuck his head through the window.

  30. He pulled his nose back and he said,

  31. go.

  32. Now, despite the humour,

  33. there is nothing funny

  34. about how the Lord Jesus describes his church at Laodicea.

  35. You make me want to vomit.

  36. You make me sick.

  37. And it's pretty hard to understand at first

  38. because Laodicea in those days was a very modern city.

  39. Deb Gould's been there, she told us, the other day.

  40. And she said that up the top of the hill

  41. and the city above Laodicea,

  42. there's another city called Hierapolis.

  43. And up there, there's hot Turkish steam baths

  44. fed by the natural spring water

  45. that comes up out of the ground.

  46. And down at the bottom of the mountain,

  47. down below Laodicea,

  48. there's a beautiful, fresh water river

  49. with the water running from the snow melt

  50. in mountains far away.

  51. Beautiful water for drinking.

  52. And the Laodiceans lived between the two,

  53. halfway up the hill.

  54. And they were very clever.

  55. And they built a series of pipes and pumps

  56. to carry the colder water up the hill

  57. to meet the hotter water that was coming down the hill.

  58. And so they gave themselves a diluted water supply,

  59. a mix of the two,

  60. lukewarm water to provide water for their town,

  61. their city.

  62. And people who were very clever,

  63. good at taking care of their comfort

  64. and looking after themselves.

  65. But in mixing that water,

  66. the Laodiceans had a reputation for water

  67. which tasted disgusting.

  68. Lots of minerals, terrible taste,

  69. terrible smell, lukewarm.

  70. Now Westfield warms their water.

  71. You go to Westfield,

  72. you want to refill your water bottle.

  73. Lukewarm water tastes disgusting,

  74. except it hasn't got the taste of minerals.

  75. So when John writes that the Lord Jesus

  76. would want to spit them out of his mouth,

  77. they knew exactly what Laodicean water tasted like

  78. and they knew exactly why he had written it like this.

  79. And he's no longer talking about water,

  80. he's changed from walking to talking about,

  81. talking,

  82. he's changed from water

  83. to talking about people

  84. who called themselves God's people in that place.

  85. And so John is writing to a proud,

  86. self-sufficient church

  87. and he gives them this really frightening serve.

  88. This is the only church of the seven

  89. that he has absolutely nothing good

  90. to commend them for.

  91. I know your works.

  92. Verse 15,

  93. you are neither cold nor hot.

  94. I wish that you were cold or hot

  95. and because you're lukewarm

  96. and neither hot nor cold,

  97. I'm going to vomit you out of my mouth.

  98. Laodicea is a proud city.

  99. They are like a few of the others in Revelation.

  100. They are a city that was absolutely destroyed

  101. by a massive earthquake in AD 60.

  102. But they were different from the other cities

  103. because the other cities accepted

  104. the emperor's help to rebuild their city.

  105. Money from him,

  106. you know the disaster relief fund

  107. that rebuilt their city.

  108. Well the Laodiceans said,

  109. thanks but no thanks.

  110. We're rich,

  111. they're skilled,

  112. they're self-starters,

  113. they're initiators,

  114. they're independent people

  115. who achieve much by their own effort,

  116. self-made men and women

  117. who did not need handouts

  118. even when confronted by natural disaster.

  119. And so they would be getting

  120. award after award in Australia

  121. for their can-do attitude

  122. in facing such a disaster

  123. and incredibly difficult times.

  124. But the huge problem in this passage,

  125. and this is the crux,

  126. was their self-assessment

  127. was different from God's evaluation of them.

  128. So verse 17,

  129. you say,

  130. I'm rich,

  131. I have become wealthy,

  132. I need nothing.

  133. And you don't know

  134. that you are wretched,

  135. pitiful,

  136. poor,

  137. blind,

  138. and naked.

  139. They filled out a survey,

  140. they've given themselves

  141. nine out of ten,

  142. and God fills out his survey

  143. and he gives them two.

  144. And this church is described

  145. as incredibly needy

  146. and desperate for charity.

  147. My first four years

  148. out of Mill College,

  149. I was serving in a church

  150. in the Campbelltown Valley

  151. and it was probably

  152. one of the neediest suburbs

  153. in Sydney at the time

  154. and to some extent still is.

  155. And we were very dependent

  156. on Anglicare's support

  157. for ministry positions

  158. at church,

  159. for food,

  160. for gas and electricity bills

  161. for some of the people

  162. in the congregation,

  163. for counselling support.

  164. In that parish,

  165. people's neediness

  166. was incredibly obvious,

  167. everybody could see it,

  168. and it was something

  169. that had to be dealt with.

  170. We as a parish,

  171. we as people,

  172. we knew we were needy

  173. and we were hungry for help.

  174. But I've also been

  175. in wealthy churches

  176. where need was hidden,

  177. where people have problems

  178. in their families

  179. and their homes.

  180. Sometimes we have the wealth

  181. to hide them,

  182. they're not obvious

  183. and not easy to see.

  184. Gambling addictions,

  185. destroying family finances.

  186. Drug and alcohol abuse

  187. to cope with unsustainable lives.

  188. Uncontrolled temper,

  189. somebody loses their temper

  190. in the family

  191. and somebody else lives

  192. with dreadful fear

  193. of them going off again.

  194. Hidden addiction

  195. to pornography

  196. that many of us

  197. have grappled with

  198. where we pursue deep

  199. inner need

  200. in empty

  201. and harmful ways.

  202. We hide it,

  203. we get trapped

  204. in secrets,

  205. and we all

  206. have very deep

  207. need and brokenness

  208. and even for myself

  209. I go back a few years

  210. I needed two years

  211. of fairly significant

  212. support in counselling

  213. for some of the things

  214. that were going on

  215. in my life.

  216. We are broken

  217. and we are needy.

  218. Now privately

  219. we know that we're

  220. in desperate trouble

  221. but publicly

  222. we're too scared

  223. to admit it.

  224. and so we fake it.

  225. Surely those things

  226. couldn't be a problem

  227. amongst the people of God.

  228. We don't feel like

  229. we can reveal those things

  230. when we come into a group

  231. of people like this.

  232. We put on a face,

  233. we don't cry out

  234. needy for help.

  235. We try to present

  236. as though we're holding it

  237. together in a self-sufficient way.

  238. And Jesus speaks

  239. to his church

  240. and he says,

  241. you say

  242. I'm rich.

  243. I've become wealthy.

  244. I need nothing.

  245. But you don't know

  246. that you are

  247. wretched,

  248. pitiful,

  249. poor,

  250. blind,

  251. and naked.

  252. And the incredible

  253. gospel truth

  254. here is that

  255. Jesus does not

  256. condemn them

  257. for being wretched,

  258. pitiful,

  259. poor,

  260. blind and naked.

  261. He's merely

  262. pointing it out.

  263. This is a universal

  264. condition.

  265. The gospel's

  266. starting point

  267. is that all people

  268. are fallen.

  269. All people have sinned

  270. and fall short

  271. of the glory of God.

  272. Romans 3.23

  273. The same gospel

  274. is wonderfully

  275. expressed in Ephesians 2.

  276. As for you,

  277. talking to us,

  278. you were dead

  279. in your transgressions

  280. and sins

  281. in which you used

  282. to walk.

  283. And then further down,

  284. because of his

  285. great love for us,

  286. God who is rich

  287. in mercy

  288. made us alive

  289. in Christ

  290. even when we were

  291. dead in our

  292. trespasses

  293. and sin.

  294. I think some

  295. of the saddest

  296. and most difficult

  297. people I meet

  298. in ministry

  299. are self-made

  300. men and women,

  301. often rich,

  302. people that perhaps

  303. we put up on

  304. pedestals because

  305. of their wealth.

  306. I think of a man

  307. I loved and respected,

  308. a man who was

  309. kind to me,

  310. who was more moral

  311. than some of the

  312. Christians that he

  313. dealt with in business

  314. and some of the

  315. moral issues that

  316. were even going on

  317. in our church family.

  318. He was rich.

  319. It was a principle

  320. of his never

  321. to borrow money.

  322. He paid in cash

  323. and he was a man

  324. who bought some

  325. really big stuff.

  326. He was the biggest

  327. giver to a new

  328. church building

  329. in the parish

  330. that I was in.

  331. And he died

  332. earlier this year

  333. as far as I know

  334. he died without

  335. Christ.

  336. But brothers and

  337. sisters,

  338. he had a way

  339. of life

  340. that we would

  341. sell ourselves

  342. for.

  343. Outwardly,

  344. really connected

  345. to church

  346. but he didn't

  347. know Jesus

  348. and he built

  349. walls around

  350. himself that

  351. stopped anyone

  352. really knowing

  353. him and getting

  354. near what was

  355. deep inside.

  356. I loved him.

  357. Jesus loved him

  358. even more

  359. but my friend

  360. did not know

  361. Jesus.

  362. See,

  363. we fear being

  364. laid bare.

  365. We fear rejection.

  366. If other people

  367. really knew what

  368. was going on

  369. inside us,

  370. do they really

  371. know how anxious

  372. I am about

  373. these exams

  374. coming up?

  375. Do they know

  376. how difficult

  377. it is for me

  378. not to have

  379. the boyfriend

  380. or the girlfriend

  381. that I've really

  382. been hoping for

  383. or the struggle

  384. which is going

  385. on in my family?

  386. And we hide

  387. although some

  388. of us have

  389. places that

  390. we can share.

  391. The Bible

  392. is consistently

  393. scathing of

  394. our efforts

  395. to present

  396. ourselves as

  397. something to

  398. God,

  399. faking it

  400. with him.

  401. Isaiah

    Isaiah 64:6

  402. chapter 64

  403. verse 6

  404. says,

  405. all of us

  406. have become

  407. like one

  408. who is

  409. unclean

  410. and all

  411. our righteous

  412. acts are

  413. like filthy

  414. rags.

  415. God wants

  416. our hearts

  417. and throughout

  418. the Bible

  419. he calls us

  420. to humble

  421. ourselves

  422. before him.

  423. So in Isaiah

  424. 66 it says

  425. this is the

  426. one I esteem

  427. he who is

  428. humble and

  429. contrite in

  430. spirit and

  431. trembles at

  432. my word.

  433. And you come

  434. into the pages

  435. of the Bible

  436. and you see

  437. that the way

  438. of the cross

  439. is a journey

  440. from independence

  441. and self-sufficiency

  442. to dependence

  443. and complete

  444. reliance on

  445. Christ.

  446. Jesus speaks

  447. to this proud

  448. church with

  449. an incredible

  450. invitation.

  451. He says in

  452. verse 18

  453. I advise you

  454. to buy

  455. from me

  456. gold refined

  457. in the fire

  458. so that you

  459. might be

  460. rich

  461. and white

  462. clothes so

  463. that you

  464. may be

  465. dressed

  466. and your

  467. shameful

  468. nakedness

  469. not be

  470. exposed

  471. and ointment

  472. to spread

  473. on your

  474. eyes so

  475. that you

  476. may see

  477. this is a

  478. rich trading

  479. city

  480. and these

  481. people are

  482. the Chinese

  483. of Chatswood

  484. and I'm

  485. not using

  486. it in a

  487. derogatory

  488. way they

  489. know about

  490. money they

  491. know how

  492. to do a

  493. good deal

  494. and they

  495. have gold

  496. supplies and

  497. they're famous

  498. for their

  499. black woolen

  500. rugs

  501. they're sold

  502. all around

  503. the world

  504. and their

  505. ear and

  506. their eye

  507. treatments

  508. everybody knows

  509. about them

  510. and Jesus

  511. offers them

  512. something that

  513. they already

  514. feel self

  515. sufficient in

  516. what do you

  517. do when

  518. somebody offers

  519. you something

  520. which you

  521. already think

  522. you have

  523. enough of

  524. you don't

  525. want anymore

  526. you say

  527. something like

  528. what do I need

  529. that for

  530. I've already

  531. got it

  532. and it's

  533. almost an

  534. expression of

  535. pride of

  536. self sufficiency

  537. of saying I'm

  538. okay thanks

  539. I don't need

  540. it

  541. and Jesus

  542. looks deeper

  543. than they are

  544. capable of

  545. looking he

  546. knows their

  547. need and he

  548. says he says

  549. to them he

  550. says that you

  551. are wretched you

  552. are pitiful you

  553. are poor you

  554. are blind you

  555. are naked

  556. come to me and

  557. receive real

  558. wealth true

  559. cleansing removal

  560. of shame he can

  561. help them to see

  562. what they are

  563. completely blind

  564. to

  565. it's the

  566. gospel

  567. it's the

  568. cleansing power

  569. of the cross

  570. it's the work

  571. of the Holy

  572. Spirit which

  573. takes the

  574. eye scales

  575. away and

  576. helps us to

  577. see

  578. can you see

  579. the dynamic

  580. Jesus has

  581. absolutely nothing

  582. good to say

  583. about this

  584. church and

  585. yet he stands

  586. there and he

  587. offers them the

  588. most magnificent

  589. and generous

  590. invitation

  591. verse 8

  592. 19 as

  593. many as I

  594. love I

  595. rebuke and

  596. discipline so

  597. be committed

  598. and repent

  599. listen I

  600. stand at the

  601. door and

  602. knock if

  603. anyone hears

  604. my voice and

  605. opens the door I

  606. will come into

  607. him and have

  608. dinner with him

  609. and he with

  610. me

  611. Jesus is

  612. speaking to a

  613. church he's

  614. speaking to church

  615. people you and

  616. me people who

  617. call themselves

  618. Christians who

  619. hang around

  620. churches who are

  621. proud of their

  622. standing in the

  623. church community

  624. speaks as a

  625. father to a

  626. wayward son or

  627. daughter that he

  628. is still in

  629. relationship with he

  630. has not given up on

  631. relationship yet

  632. those I love I

  633. rebuke and I

  634. discipline wake up

  635. he speaks a word to

  636. insiders not to

  637. outsiders and he

  638. says let me in

  639. last week when I

  640. preached on the

  641. letter to the

  642. church in

  643. Philadelphia Jesus

  644. was portrayed as

  645. the faithful steward

  646. of God's house he

  647. has the swipe card to

  648. every room in heaven

  649. and he opens and he

  650. closes doors of

  651. opportunity to ministry

  652. and ultimately to

  653. heaven itself if he

  654. opens it you can't

  655. close and if he

  656. closes it you can't

  657. open it awesome

  658. power but the door

  659. here in Laodicea is

  660. different this door is

  661. a door that we have

  662. the ability to open

  663. and that we are

  664. ultimately held

  665. responsible for if we

  666. don't open it and

  667. Jesus says to us to

  668. his church be

  669. committed and repent

  670. it's a call to

  671. commitment to stand

  672. in Christ to move

  673. from lukewarm fence

  674. sitting and

  675. half-heartedness to a

  676. life which is devoted

  677. to Christ to repentance

  678. to a turning back to

  679. what we already know

  680. a turning back to the

  681. gospel giving up the

  682. faking it and allowing

  683. Jesus to do his

  684. cleansing work in us

  685. it's a call to humble

  686. dependence and

  687. repentance and it's a

  688. completely undeserved

  689. invitation into a

  690. renewed and refreshed

  691. relationship with Jesus

  692. I will come into him

  693. or her and I will have

  694. dinner with him or her

  695. and they with me

  696. it's the intimacy of

  697. knowing Jesus the

  698. closeness of having a

  699. meal together

  700. real relationship with

  701. him

  702. being able to pour

  703. your heart out to him

  704. and knowing him

  705. personally and knowing

  706. that he cares for you

  707. it's not about doing

  708. and performing

  709. it's about abiding

  710. and resting

  711. and refreshing

  712. in joyful obedience

  713. of our saviour

  714. Jesus Christ

  715. I thank God for the

  716. man who taught me

  717. when I was first a

  718. believer to relate to

  719. God in a real and

  720. intimate way every day

  721. in coming to his word

  722. and speaking with him

  723. in prayer and also

  724. sharing the faith with

  725. my friends

  726. and I grew

  727. and I was refreshed in

  728. my relationship with

  729. Jesus and I felt alive

  730. and I felt dependent on

  731. him and it was just a

  732. deep thrill being his

  733. person

  734. and after a few years

  735. and some of them in

  736. theological college and

  737. it's not college's fault

  738. but it became a chore

  739. and a task

  740. and a duty

  741. and more about getting

  742. over my guilt

  743. than enjoying Jesus

  744. and I was very

  745. half-hearted

  746. and lukewarm

  747. in coming to the

  748. scriptures

  749. and I used the

  750. language of commitment

  751. but was trading on the

  752. past not on the

  753. present

  754. and it's a really

  755. lonely place to be

  756. and Jesus invites us

  757. into something which

  758. is rich and

  759. intimate and

  760. relational with him

  761. and so I thank God

  762. for the woman and

  763. not Kerry another

  764. woman I thank God

  765. for Kerry let me tell

  766. you but this other

  767. woman who 25 years

  768. later helped me back

  769. into joyous times with

  770. Jesus in his word

  771. and in prayer and in

  772. understanding that I

  773. was his son and who

  774. helped me to

  775. experiencing the

  776. intimacy and the

  777. grace and the

  778. exceeding joy of

  779. dining with him and

  780. living for him

  781. of being able to

  782. come safely into his

  783. presence despite being

  784. a person who was

  785. wretched

  786. pitiful

  787. poor

  788. blind

  789. and naked

  790. it's the greatest

  791. thing in life to

  792. know that we are

  793. loved by Jesus

  794. it's an enormous

  795. privilege to treasure

  796. him together

  797. there's incredible

  798. encouragement from

  799. coming together as

  800. the people of God who

  801. just love him

  802. and Jesus stands here

  803. with this church that he

  804. has nothing to commend

  805. to or to commend them

  806. for and he offers them

  807. extraordinary grace and

  808. mercy and kindness

  809. I think it's

  810. incredibly similar to

  811. the sort of teaching

  812. which is going on in

  813. Luke's gospel from

  814. round about Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  815. chapter 18

  816. you know the rich

  817. young man who comes

  818. up to Jesus and he

  819. says to Jesus what's

  820. the what's the good

  821. thing what's the one

  822. good thing that I must

  823. do to inherit eternal

  824. life

  825. and he says Jesus

  826. says we know the

  827. commandments he said

  828. I've kept all the

  829. relational commandments

  830. look I've never

  831. committed adultery I've

  832. never murdered anybody

  833. I've never lied I don't

  834. steal and I really

  835. honour my mum and dad

  836. and the whole community

  837. listening on they would

  838. have looked at the

  839. bloke they would have

  840. known his history and

  841. they would have said

  842. yeah he is like that

  843. that's the sort of bloke

  844. he is but Jesus drew

  845. out his heart and he

  846. said you still lack

  847. just one thing sell

  848. everything you have

  849. and give to the poor

  850. and you will have

  851. treasure in heaven and

  852. then come and follow

  853. me and he walked

  854. away from Jesus very

  855. sad because he had

  856. great wealth he would

  857. not let go of one

  858. treasure to lay hold

  859. of a better treasure

  860. the Laodiceans are

  861. being called to let go

  862. of something which was

  863. a treasure to them but

  864. which made the Lord

  865. Jesus want to vomit

  866. and in his great grace

  867. he wasn't just calling

  868. them to leave something

  869. precious or what was

  870. precious to them he

  871. was calling them to

  872. something precious

  873. something far more

  874. precious he wanted

  875. them to have something

  876. so much better he

  877. wanted these wealthy

  878. self-satisfied people

  879. to have him as their

  880. greatest treasure to

  881. repent to see that

  882. they needed to let go

  883. of the false treasure

  884. and lay hold of him

  885. and Jesus was very sad

  886. when that man walked

  887. away from him a great

  888. gift was being offered

  889. and he didn't take it

  890. because he thought he

  891. had something better

  892. no thanks I don't need

  893. it really is what he's

  894. saying even though he

  895. didn't say it like that

  896. and Jesus said how hard

  897. it is for a rich person

  898. to enter the kingdom of

  899. heaven it is easier for a

  900. camel to go through the

  901. eye of a needle than for a

  902. rich person to get into

  903. heaven and the people who

  904. were listening and the

  905. people were looking on

  906. they were astonished at

  907. what Jesus said they were

  908. shocked and the disciples

  909. who can be saved

  910. and the question gets an

  911. astonishing answer with

  912. the encounter with the

  913. chief tax collector

  914. Zacchaeus in Luke chapter

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  915. 19 wealthy greedy rip off

  916. merchant trader he's all

  917. those things a great story

  918. for a current affair you

  919. know do one of those

  920. ambush interviews with

  921. Zacchaeus coming out the

  922. corner in Jericho up the

  923. tree gotcha Zacchaeus as he

  924. gets out of his filthy

  925. looking Mercedes Benz or

  926. whatever it is to climb the

  927. tree what's it like to

  928. live the high life on

  929. what you've stolen from

  930. other people in Jericho you

  931. dog

  932. that's how you do it

  933. isn't it

  934. he's a true Laodicean

  935. wretched

  936. pitiful

  937. poor

  938. blind

  939. and naked

  940. and he encounters Jesus

  941. and he is transformed

  942. isn't that incredible

  943. Lord I give back half of my

  944. possessions to the poor

  945. and if I've ripped off

  946. anybody in the year I have

  947. I will pay back four times

  948. what I've stolen from them

  949. so he does he exchanges one

  950. treasure for another he is

  951. received and accepted and

  952. loved by Jesus shame is

  953. removed his eyes are open

  954. he's loved by Jesus who

  955. declares the impossible

  956. Jesus says today salvation

  957. has come to this house this

  958. guy gets it

  959. church in Laodicea is called to

  960. exchange one treasure for

  961. another they're called to

  962. overcome

  963. you see the starting point

  964. the starting point for all of

  965. us here is one of our value

  966. statement humble authenticity

  967. seeing ourselves as Christ sees us

  968. and the way that Christ sees us

  969. is all we've begun at this point

  970. wretched

  971. pitiful

  972. poor

  973. blind

  974. naked

  975. incredibly needy

  976. somebody asked me a question

  977. the other day about how I would

  978. cope as a minister if I was

  979. leading a church with a number of

  980. attenders who live

  981. an openly gay lifestyle

  982. and it threw me for a bit

  983. and I spent quite a bit of time

  984. reflecting on the question I'm

  985. going to continue to do so

  986. but part of the answers in this

  987. passage

  988. to see myself as Jesus assesses me

  989. to see me before I see them to

  990. see me as wretched pitiful poor

  991. blind

  992. naked

  993. very needy of the grace of

  994. Christ

  995. starting point for us all

  996. because it puts us in a place

  997. where we won't be too quick to

  998. exalt ourselves over others and it

  999. reminds us of the grace that we

  1000. all need

  1001. that's not a complete answer to

1002. that question but it is a

  1003. starting point

1004. and I think going with that I

1005. hope that our church and I think

1006. that our church is a safe place

1007. for people from all sorts of

  1008. places and struggles

1009. to consider the claims of the

  1010. Lord Jesus Christ

1011. a church where we understand that

1012. we are all a work in progress

  1013. that we haven't arrived

1014. and that we're at the mercy of the

1015. Lord Jesus Christ and he is the

1016. one who has lifted us up from

  1017. where we were

1018. where the Lord Jesus looked on us

1019. and saw us as wretched pitiful

  1020. poor blind

  1021. naked

  1022. deeply broken before him

1023. I've only got to go to the

1024. Sermon on the Mount to expose my

  1025. heart

1026. and reveal me to be

1027. I read the Sermon on the Mount

1028. and I see straight away that I'm

  1029. in God's eyes a thief

  1030. a murderer

  1031. an adulterer

  1032. an immoral man

  1033. and I don't glory in that

1034. but it drives us to be like the

1035. tax collector in the temple in

1036. Luke 18 whose starting point in

  1037. relationship with Christ

1038. is to beat his breast and to cry

1039. out Lord have mercy on me the

  1040. sinner

1041. Revelation 3 finishes with the

1042. words of Jesus to this church

1043. to the one who overcomes

  1044. verse 21

1045. to the one who overcomes I will

1046. give the right to sit with me on

  1047. my throne

1048. just as I also won the victory

1049. and sat down with the father on

  1050. his throne

1051. now it's pretty clear through this

1052. passage that the the overcomer is

1053. not the self-made man or woman

1054. they are the person who takes up

  1055. Jesus invitation

1056. and buys from him gold refined in

1057. the fire so that they may be rich

1058. and white clothes so that they may

1059. be dressed and their shameful

  1060. nakedness hidden

1061. and ointment to spread on their

1062. eyes that they might see

1063. so the overcomer that we are

1064. called to be is the one who turns

1065. to Jesus who comes to Jesus who

1066. receives from Jesus who depends on

  1067. Jesus

1068. and we can do that because he is the

1069. great overcomer he is the one who

  1070. has overcome for us

  1071. and he says

1072. I also won the victory and sat down

1073. with my father on his throne

  1074. he overcame

  1075. God in the flesh

1076. allowed his creation to reject him in

1077. the most wicked and final way that

1078. they could at the cross

1079. he overcame he is the resurrected

1080. Christ the first to overcome sin and

  1081. death

1082. he overcame right now he sits with

1083. his father on the throne of heaven

  1084. ruling over the universe

1085. we overcome when we give way to him

1086. when we see ourselves as God sees us

1087. as wretched as pitiful as poor as blind

  1088. and as naked

1089. we overcome when we turn from

  1090. self-sufficiency to independence

1091. to turn from self-sufficient independence

1092. and we overcome when we humbly receive

1093. the grace that God wants to shower

  1094. us with

1095. we overcome when we treasure Jesus
