  1. I don't know if you've ever owned or had one of those 3D magic eye books.

  2. Tim's going to throw a picture up for me.

  3. I don't know if you remember when these first came out.

  4. Some of you won't because you were probably born afterwards.

  5. But I remember when these first came out and you get given the book

  6. and there was just this peer pressure to act like you could see the picture.

  7. And so everyone's passing around the book at school and you're looking at it going,

  8. yeah, I can see the boat.

  9. That's it over here, right?

  10. Yeah, I mean in the middle.

  11. That's where it is.

  12. That's the boat, right?

  13. And you're looking at it and everyone's going, it's simple.

  14. Just look.

  15. Look again.

  16. Just fuzzy your eyes.

  17. And I'm like, how do you fuzzy your eyes?

  18. What kind of an instruction is that?

  19. And so some people are just glancing at it going, yeah, it's no worries.

  20. But when you first look at it, it's just this mess.

  21. It's like, that's not anything, surely.

  22. It's just a mess and they're making it up to make me look stupid.

  23. You're waiting for one day.

  24. Everyone's going to turn around and go, there's no pictures.

  25. We know that you were pretending when you said you could saw the boat.

  26. It looks like a mess.

  27. And to see what's in there, you have to actually train your eyes to look past that first bit.

  28. To go beyond your first glance, you need to look properly and see what is really there.

  29. Now, this book of Revelation that we've been studying to the first century church, this letter, it's a pastoral one.

  30. The bishop reminded us last week.

  31. It's encouraging in many ways.

  32. It's challenging in many ways.

  33. But more than anything else, it's enlightening.

  34. Because this book of Revelation, what it does is it trains the hearts and eyes of Christians so that they have right perspective.

  35. It gives them the ability to see beyond their circumstance, to not be overwhelmed by what's happening today or next week or next month, and to see into eternity.

  36. This book is designed to enable them to understand more fully the significance of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  37. And tonight, we drop into chapter 12 of Revelation, which is almost like a snapshot of the whole book wrapped up in one chapter.

  38. Chapters 12, 13 and 14 kind of sit together.

  39. And they are really a summary of what Revelation is about without all the detail that comes in other bit.

  40. And even though this snapshot that we get is a little bit creative and maybe a little bit confusing, it is a snapshot of history and eternity.

  41. And it's showing us that things are not how they seem, that things are not how they look at first glance.

  42. The pain and the struggle that the churches were facing, the pain and the struggle and the suffering that we face as Christians now is real and even normal.

  43. But it's not the whole picture.

  44. When we follow Jesus.

  45. And so to give John this perspective, to give us this perspective, God gives John another vision.

  46. Have a look with me at verse 1 and 2.

  47. A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven.

  48. A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and the crown of 12 stars on her head.

  49. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.

  50. So first up, we've got this woman wearing the sun.

  51. This woman is representative of Israel, of God's people.

  52. That's what the 12 stars is about.

  53. It's pointing us back to the 12 tribes in the Old Testament.

  54. And she's in pain and she's about to give birth.

  55. And there's this sense of expectation that something is going to come out of Israel.

  56. Something is going to come out of God's people.

  57. The next bit, verse 3.

  58. So John sees this dragon, this enormous red dragon with horns and crowns and heads.

  59. And verse 9 tells us that this dragon is Satan.

  60. This is the devil.

  61. His horns and his crowns tell us that Satan wants the power and the influence and the authority of God.

  62. That's his desire.

  63. And we know in this vision that Satan is sitting, waiting, wanting to devour the child that will come out of God's people.

  64. Wanting to devour whatever it is that God's people will produce.

  65. And we see what that is in verse 5.

  66. She, the woman, gave birth to a son, a male child who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.

  67. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.

  68. The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

  69. So a child is born.

  70. He's male.

  71. He will rule.

  72. And we know that he won't just be any male child who will rule.

  73. This will be the saviour.

  74. The fact that he will rule the nations with an iron scepter, that points us back to a special kind of king.

  75. That Israel is waiting for a king in the line of David.

  76. This baby, this child is Jesus.

  77. And we're told in the vision that he is snatched up to God before Satan can devour him.

  78. He is placed on his throne and the woman flees off into the desert to be taken care of by God.

  79. And then the last bit of this vision in verse 7.

  80. So Satan pursues the child.

  81. He's waiting there to devour him.

  82. But he misses his opportunity because Jesus is snatched up to heaven and onto the throne.

  83. And instead he is cast out by the angels and hurled down to the earth.

  84. Okay, deep breath.

  85. Seems simple enough, right?

  86. So we've got God's people.

  87. Jesus is being born.

  88. Satan is against them.

  89. Satan misses his opportunity.

  90. Jesus goes onto his throne.

  91. Satan gets hurled down.

  92. You with me so far?

  93. I know there's a bit of weirdness.

  94. So we've got to understand when we read things like this in God's word that this is a prophetic vision.

  95. Which means it's not precise.

  96. We can't necessarily connect every bit of this vision to specific details in history.

  97. Even though it's obviously talking about some real things that did actually happen in history.

  98. There's kind of links and connections we can make in this vision.

  99. But we need to be careful how hard or how closely we do that.

  100. I mean, you've got a woman and a dragon or a serpent clashing.

  101. Which points us back to the Garden of Eden when you had a woman tempted by a serpent.

  102. And listen to these words when God pronounces judgment on the serpent back in Genesis 3.

  103. He says,

  104. I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers.

  105. He will crush your head and you will strike his heel.

  106. It's pointing us maybe to something that we are already warned about.

  107. The woman being taken off into the desert to be protected for the 1,200 days reminds us of God rescuing his people out of Egypt.

  108. Taking them out into the desert.

  109. The book of Exodus talks about them being carried on eagle's wings just like the woman is.

  110. And then at the same time, this vision could almost connect to the situation of the early church when they were reading this book.

  111. The dragon is the emperor Domitian who is persecuting the Christians fiercely.

  112. He's killing them left, right and centre.

  113. And they are at his whim, it seems.

  114. So there's things that we can connect through history that kind of are part of this vision.

  115. But the focus is really in a tiny little bit of detail that comes in the middle of it.

  116. The focus of this encounter between Jesus and the woman and the dragon is Jesus' life itself.

  117. That's the bit we need to hone in on.

  118. His temptation in the wilderness, his death at the hands of the Roman authorities.

  119. In this passage, Jesus' life is summarised in 21 words.

  120. Basically, he's born and then he goes to heaven and sits on the throne.

  121. Those words are shorthand for the most significant event in human and created history ever.

  122. See, what this vision is telling us is that Jesus' life itself,

  123. his life growing up, his obedience to his father,

  124. his life, his death and resurrection,

  125. Jesus' life was the battle between Satan and Jesus.

  126. It's not something in the future.

  127. It's not something that happens out there in the heavens and we can't see it.

  128. The battle took place on earth when Jesus came.

  129. His death and his resurrection were the means by which Satan gets beaten.

  130. And we see that because Satan gets hurled down.

  131. Even as the angels are the ones kicking him out of heaven,

  132. it's actually the blood of the lamb that overcame Satan.

  133. It's Jesus' life, Jesus' death and Jesus' resurrection

  134. that actually win the battle against Satan.

  135. This great and wondrous sign that John gets shown is Jesus.

  136. In all its weirdness and wonderfulness,

  137. this chapter is a gospel chapter.

  138. God is opening John's eyes to look at Jesus and Jesus' victory.

  139. God is showing John that Jesus is sitting on his throne now.

  140. And at the same time, Satan is wallowing in defeat now.

  141. And it gets really clear for us because God gives us a clear interpretation

  142. with a voice from heaven in verse 10.

  143. I heard a loud voice in heaven say,

  144. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God

  145. and the authority of his Christ for the accuser of our brothers

  146. who accuses them before our God day and night has been hurled down.

  147. They overcame him by the blood of the lamb

  148. and by the word of their testimony.

  149. They did not love their lives so much as to shrink back from death.

  150. Now salvation has come.

  151. This vision is pointing to an event that happened a few decades

  152. before the early church would have heard about in this letter.

  153. This letter is pointing to an event that happened thousands of years

  154. before we opened it up tonight.

  155. This is a past tense verse.

  156. It says salvation is here now.

  157. The kingdom is here now.

  158. Jesus sits on the throne reigning in authority now.

  159. Satan's been defeated.

  160. The death and resurrection of Jesus have won the battle.

  161. Satan has lost.

  162. Forgiveness is available.

  163. And yet, is that how it looked and felt for the early church reading this book?

  164. I mean, we know that the churches were being persecuted.

  165. When we read the letters in the first chapters,

  166. we know they were facing opposition.

  167. They were suffering.

  168. We know that people are dying daily for calling Jesus their Lord

  169. and for refusing to bow to the pressure of the Roman emperor.

  170. Does it feel like salvation has come in your life?

  171. Does it feel like Jesus sits on his throne in your situation?

  172. I mean, the tension is hinted at in verse 11.

  173. Did you catch it?

  174. They overcame him by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony.

  175. They did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

  176. Satan was overcome, but they still died.

  177. The victory was won, but they still died.

  178. Even with the victory of Jesus, even having been washed in the blood of the lamb,

  179. even being forgiven, they still died.

  180. Many of them violently.

  181. And yet, we get this verse.

  182. We get this voice from heaven that says,

  183. they were victorious in their deaths.

  184. The kingdom of God,

  185. the salvation that is talked about in this verse,

  186. is not what we sometimes think it should be.

  187. It's better.

  188. A couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to go on holidays,

  189. just for a few days, to visit my sister in Dubbo.

  190. It was a trip with a particular milestone that made me a very proud dad.

  191. We mapped out when you've got to do five hours driving with a two and a half year old.

  192. You really have to pick when you're going to stop,

  193. how you're going to do it, when he's going to sleep,

  194. what's an appropriate amount of drugs to put it.

  195. No, I'm just joking.

  196. Just how are you going to get from A to B without losing your mind and smacking your child inappropriately.

  197. And this, for us, involved McDonald's,

  198. because McDonald's has good food for me, it has good play equipment for him.

  199. And the milestone was that our first pit stop,

  200. my son came out with the word Maccas.

  201. And basically, that is all he says when we're driving in the car now.

  202. He's just looking for the next Maccas that he can stop at.

  203. And I'm very proud because those of you who know me will know that McDonald's is a passion of mine.

  204. But the funny thing is, we went to McDonald's multiple times and he didn't eat food once.

  205. He's not interested.

  206. I tried to give him hash brown.

  207. He's like, no, just give me my mushy Wheat Bix or whatever.

  208. And so he thinks Maccas is just about Playland.

  209. And look, Playland is great.

  210. But because he has this limited understanding,

  211. he doesn't realise the goodness that he's on offer behind the counter at McDonald's,

  212. he's sold himself short and settled for less.

  213. And look, we have this limited understanding when it comes to the glorious future that God is preparing for us.

  214. And we need to be careful that when we dream about the kingdom of God,

  215. when we hope for our future,

  216. when we imagine what he will do and what good he will bring in our life,

  217. that we don't pull the kingdom back in and make it small and less impressive than it actually is.

  218. The kingdom of God is victorious.

  219. But we mustn't let our understanding of what that looks like be limited by our own sinful imagination.

  220. This verse, verse 10, that salvation has come, that the kingdom has come,

  221. was true for those Christians suffering 2,000 years ago.

  222. And it's true for Christians around the world today facing persecution in Iraq and Syria.

  223. And it's true for Christians today in Chatswood.

  224. Facing temptation and depression and failing in their battle with sin.

  225. We are both citizens of heaven and residents of earth.

  226. Our names are immovably etched into the book of life.

  227. God is preparing a place for us in glory.

  228. And yet right now we live in a fallen and limited and pain-filled world.

  229. This is the reality of the kingdom now.

  230. It's there in verse 12.

  231. Therefore, because salvation has come, because the kingdom has come,

  232. because Christ sits on the throne,

  233. therefore rejoice you heavens and you who dwell in them.

  234. That's us.

  235. But woe to the earth and the sea,

  236. because the devil has gone down to you.

  237. He is filled with fury because he knows that his time is short.

  238. Woe to you who live on the earth.

  239. That's us.

  240. When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth,

  241. he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

  242. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle

  243. so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert,

  244. where she would be taken care of for a time, times, and half a time,

  245. out of the serpent's reach.

  246. The woman is rescued, but there is an ominous warning in verse 17.

  247. Then the dragon was enraged at the woman

  248. and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring,

  249. those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

  250. That's us.

  251. Because we live in both heaven and earth,

  252. because we are citizens of heaven,

  253. because we are guaranteed our place,

  254. because we belong to that kingdom that is not of this world,

  255. we experience both the joy that is declared for heaven

  256. and the woe that is declared for earth.

  257. Sadness and depression are not alternatives to joy in the Christian life.

  258. We will experience both.

  259. I mean, did you catch it there?

  260. In verse 17, we are at war in our day-to-day life.

  261. Satan is our enemy.

  262. He is a wounded enemy,

  263. but he will do anything to share the pain that he experiences with us.

  264. There was a football game yesterday.

  265. I've been very restrained.

  266. We're 15 minutes in and I haven't mentioned it yet.

  267. There was a football game yesterday

  268. and there are some notable absences from church tonight.

  269. But there was a football game yesterday

  270. between the Sydney Swans and the Hawthorne Hawks.

  271. You all know that I support a couple of teams

  272. and whoever's playing the Swans.

  273. Now, I could have gotten up to gloat tonight.

  274. I could have intentionally, you know,

  275. modelled my wardrobe on brown and gold.

  276. Would have been tough.

  277. But I could have intentionally dressed that way.

  278. And you can imagine the pain that that would have caused for certain people.

  279. Like I said, the Smiths particularly may have had to take a week off to recover afterwards

  280. because of the damage to the relationship.

  281. Waving that pain back in their face

  282. would have been just exacerbating what they were already feeling.

  283. And what we need to understand is that

  284. Satan is a defeated enemy.

  285. And every time he sees somebody who bears the name of Jesus,

  286. it's like we wave the jersey in front of his face to remind him that he lost.

  287. He is antagonised by people who love Jesus in their day-to-day life.

  288. He is enraged every time you make a decision to treasure Jesus

  289. above the things in the world.

  290. He desperately wants to cover up that light of salvation that dwells in us.

  291. He wants to damage our lives with pain and sin and temptation,

  292. so much so that our love for Jesus will be diluted

  293. or maybe even extinguished.

  294. The war with Satan will not go forever.

  295. Satan is defeated and the times, time and half a time,

  296. the 1260 days, that's three and a half,

  297. which in Revelation speak means a limited time.

  298. Satan has not been sent down here with just open slather.

  299. He knows that his time is short.

  300. But until Jesus returns, we are at war.

  301. And war is not easy.

  302. If nothing else, reading this should make us ready

  303. for what we will face in life.

  304. If you're a follower of Jesus,

  305. you must expect that life will throw things at you

  306. that make it hard to treasure Jesus,

  307. that make it hard to put him first.

  308. One of our core values as a church is humble authenticity.

  309. It's about being real and being honest with each other.

  310. It's about not putting on pretense.

  311. This passage has just reminded us,

  312. maybe told us,

  313. that every one of us who loves Jesus is at war with Satan.

  314. It's told us that Satan is powerful and clever

  315. and so we should assume that at any given point,

  316. some of us in this room will not be feeling

  317. all clappy and cheerful about following Jesus.

  318. We should assume that in this room,

  319. sometimes all of us will not be particularly excited

  320. about following Jesus

  321. because Satan is pressing on pressure points in our lives.

  322. We might be struggling with doubt,

  323. maybe even anger towards God,

  324. maybe a sense of failure

  325. as we continue to fall into sin.

  326. Humble authenticity is being honest

  327. about the fact that that's how we're feeling.

  328. It means we don't have to turn up to church

  329. and put on a show and say everything's great

  330. and yeah, I had a fantastic quiet time this week.

  331. It's okay to say I really struggled

  332. to open my Bible this week

  333. because the reality is

  334. that will be all of us at some point

  335. and all we do when we put on a show

  336. and say everything's fine

  337. is we project that expectation

  338. and that pressure onto other people

  339. and suddenly this isn't a safe place

  340. to just be how I'm going anymore.

  341. It's the place where everything

  342. has to be fine all the time.

  343. I've got to be honest with you,

  344. for me personally,

  345. I'm feeling weary as a Christian.

  346. I'm finding it difficult

  347. to open the Bible

  348. and be refreshed at the moment.

  349. I'm trying,

  350. sometimes more than others,

  351. but I'm feeling weary.

  352. My Sundays are fairly epic.

  353. I get to three,

  354. three and a half services

  355. and I have to pray sometimes

  356. to ask God,

  357. don't make me switch off in this.

  358. Don't let me be cynical in this

  359. because when I'm tired,

  360. that's where I go.

  361. When I'm tired,

  362. I start looking down at other people.

  363. I start judging other people.

  364. I start thinking

  365. they're not really as holy

  366. as they're pretending to be right now.

  367. Now,

  368. Satan is powerful

  369. and he's clever

  370. and he will press your life

  371. in whatever way he knows

  372. you are vulnerable.

  373. It might not be pride.

  374. It's right for us

  375. to recognise

  376. that Satan is behind

  377. the persecution

  378. that our brothers

  379. and sisters face

  380. in Iraq and Syria

  381. when there is a gun

  382. pointed at them

  383. saying follow Jesus

  384. or give up on Jesus

  385. or die.

  386. But we need to also recognise

  387. that Satan has more weapons

  388. than just guns.

  389. Satan's goal

  390. isn't to kill you.

  391. It's to make you

  392. stop loving Jesus.

  393. It's to make you doubt

  394. that God loves you

  395. and he doesn't necessarily

  396. need a gun to do it.

  397. He can drag you down

  398. with temptation

  399. by maybe giving you

  400. the opportunity

  401. to get something

  402. that you really desire

  403. that you know God

  404. doesn't want for you.

  405. He can distract you

  406. from treasuring Jesus

  407. with the lure of comfort

  408. by giving you something

  409. that's not bad in itself

  410. but that will be

  411. a distraction.

  412. He might attack you

  413. with envy.

  414. He might give things

  415. that you want

  416. to the people around you

  417. just so that you start

  418. wondering whether or not

  419. God loves you.

  420. God loves you.

  421. God loves you.

  422. God loves you.

  423. God loves you.

  424. God loves you.

  425. God loves you.

  426. God loves you.

  427. This is why

  428. knowing our hope

  429. is so important.

  430. This is why

  431. perspective matters.

  432. This is why

  433. we need to train

  434. our eyes

  435. to not just see

  436. what's right in front

  437. of us today

  438. and tomorrow

  439. and next week

  440. and next year

  441. and for the next 50 years.

  442. God's kingdom

  443. is not

  444. about

  445. this life.

  446. and if you think

  447. it is

  448. if your hope

  449. is for a good life

  450. as a Christian

  451. then you'll probably

  452. be disappointed.

  453. If your hope

  454. in dark times

  455. is that

  456. it's going to get

  457. better soon

  458. and by soon

  459. you mean in a week

  460. or a month

  461. or a year

  462. that's not the hope

  463. of the kingdom of God.

  464. It's an understandable hope

  465. it's not a wrong

  466. thing to desire

  467. but it's not the hope

  468. of the kingdom of God.

  469. It's not the hope

  470. of scripture

  471. it's not the victory

  472. that is won

  473. in Jesus' death

  474. and resurrection.

  475. For many of the Christians

  476. reading this letter

  477. in the first century

  478. reading about

  479. the victory of Christ

  480. they would either

  481. lose loved ones

  482. or die themselves

  483. under persecution.

  484. For many of them

  485. life didn't get better.

  486. They suffered every day

  487. until their life

  488. was taken from them.

  489. But ultimately

  490. it did get better

  491. because for them

  492. death was not the end

  493. it was the transition

  494. into the better place

  495. that God had prepared

  496. for them.

  497. It was the transition

  498. into the fuller

  499. version of God's kingdom

  500. free from Satan's

  501. opposition.

  502. If our hope

  503. in this life

  504. if our hope

  505. as Christians

  506. is just about

  507. being a bit more

  508. comfortable

  509. a bit less sick

  510. a bit less poor

  511. then we make

  512. Satan's job

  513. really easy.

  514. God never

  515. promises

  516. comfort

  517. never.

  518. It is nowhere

  519. in scripture

  520. he never promises

  521. comfort in this life

  522. and yet somehow

  523. it just has

  524. crept in

  525. and become part

  526. of our subconscious

  527. expectation

  528. of what it means

  529. to follow Jesus.

  530. we're happy

  531. to concede

  532. we will suffer

  533. as Christians

  534. but what we mean

  535. by that is

  536. most of our life

  537. will be okay

  538. and there'll be

  539. the odd struggle

  540. to teach me

  541. something.

  542. and so when

  543. that struggle

  544. stretches out

  545. for a year

  546. or for five

  547. years

  548. or for 50

  549. years

  550. we don't know

  551. what to do

  552. with it

  553. because we

  554. have convinced

  555. ourselves

  556. that the kingdom

  557. of God

  558. is about

  559. having a happy

  560. retirement.

  561. last week

  562. we prayed

  563. for our

  564. sister Janine

  565. and her

  566. family

  567. as she

  568. began a round

  569. of intensive

  570. cancer treatment

  571. and we

  572. continue to

  573. pray for her

  574. and we

  575. cry out

  576. that God

  577. would intervene

  578. and that he

  579. would heal

  580. her

  581. and that he

  582. would restore

  583. her

  584. but what

  585. we have

  586. to grasp

  587. is that

  588. even if

  589. she dies

  590. even if

  591. God calls

  592. her home

  593. because she

  594. knows Jesus

  595. she still

  596. wins.

  597. That's the

  598. hope of the

  599. kingdom.

  600. The victory

  601. of God

  602. might not

  603. look like

  604. victory to

  605. us

  606. but that

  607. just means

  608. we need

  609. victory

  610. redefined.

  611. We are

  612. so focused

  613. on the

  614. here and

  615. now

  616. and God

  617. has a

  618. bigger vision

  619. for us.

  620. He has a

  621. bigger hope

  622. than just

  623. your 60,

  624. 70,

  625. 80,

  626. 90 or

  627. 100 years

  628. on this

  629. earth.

  630. The hope

  631. that he

  632. has for

  633. you is

  634. eternal.

  635. The 3D

  636. images that

  637. I was talking

  638. about before

  639. are blurry

  640. at best.

  641. Even when

  642. you train

  643. your eyes

  644. to see

  645. whatever

  646. sailboat

  647. is supposed

  648. to be in

  649. the picture

  650. it's still

  651. hidden in

  652. a mess

  653. of colour

  654. or pattern

  655. and it's

  656. blurry

  657. at best.

  658. Now that

  659. you've

  660. trained

  661. your eyes

  662. there's

  663. just a

  664. picture

  665. in that

  666. blurriness.

  667. There's

  668. a little

  669. bit of

  670. clarity

  671. but there's

  672. still

  673. mess.

  674. The

  675. kingdom

  676. of God

  677. is real

  678. and has

  679. begun

  680. but in

  681. this life

  682. we see

  683. it through

  684. a mess.

  685. We see

  686. it amidst

  687. suffering

  688. being followers

  689. of Jesus

  690. and being

  691. forgiven

  692. being part

  693. of God's

  694. kingdom

  695. now brings

  696. clarity

  697. and hope

  698. in the

  699. mess

  700. but it

  701. doesn't

  702. remove

  703. the mess

  704. altogether.

  705. It will

  706. when Jesus

  707. comes back

  708. but right

  709. now the

  710. hope of the

  711. kingdom is

  712. not the

  713. removal of

  714. mess but

  715. it's

  716. clarity

  717. in the

  718. mess.

  719. victory.

  720. The

  721. centerpiece

  722. of God's

  723. victory

  724. the

  725. centerpiece

  726. of God's

  727. saving

  728. work in

  729. history

  730. is the

  731. cross.

  732. It's the

  733. humiliation

  734. and mockery

  735. of Jesus

  736. as he is

  737. murdered as

  738. an innocent

  739. man and

  740. through that

  741. event he

  742. is crowned

  743. the Lord

  744. of all.

  745. Victory in

  746. the kingdom

  747. of God is

  748. very different

  749. to the way

  750. the world

  751. around us

  752. defines

  753. victory.

  754. What God

  755. has for us

  756. is good

  757. and is

  758. better but

  759. we must

  760. understand that

  761. to a lot of

  762. people it

  763. won't look

  764. good and

  765. it won't

  766. look better.

  767. It will

  768. involve pain

  769. and suffering

  770. and possibly

  771. even death.

  772. We need to

  773. take this

  774. idea of

  775. comfort in

  776. the Christian

  777. life and

  778. throw it

  779. away.

  780. We need

  781. to get

  782. rid of it

  783. because it

  784. is damaging

  785. our ability

  786. to see

  787. our eternal

  788. hope.

  789. Because we're

  790. so focused

  791. on what's

  792. here we're

  793. missing what

  794. is further

  795. out.

  796. We're missing

  797. what is more

  798. exciting.

  799. We're missing

  800. what is hiding

  801. in the mess.

  802. So long as

  803. we allow

  804. comfort to

  805. shape our

  806. hope then

  807. we'll be

  808. setting ourselves

  809. up for

  810. pain.

  811. Because God

  812. just doesn't

  813. promise you

  814. comfort in

  815. this life.

  816. He does

  817. promise comfort

  818. beyond your

  819. wildest imagination

  820. but he promises

  821. it when he

  822. returns.

  823. And if you

  824. are expecting

  825. him to

  826. give you

  827. comfort now

  828. you will

  829. be disappointed.

  830. Now don't

  831. mishear me.

  832. There's nothing

  833. wrong with

  834. comfort in

  835. itself.

  836. There's nothing

  837. wrong with the

  838. fact that you

  839. live in a

  840. house and that

  841. you can feed

  842. yourself and

  843. those sort of

  844. things but you

  845. must understand

  846. it's less than

  847. what God wants

  848. for you.

  849. So if that is

  850. your ambition

  851. if that is your

  852. hope in dark

  853. times that you

  854. can get back to

  855. that sort of

  856. life it's not

  857. the kingdom.

  858. And it's a

  859. distraction from

  860. what God is

  861. doing.

  862. The Christian

  863. life now, the

  864. kingdom of God

  865. now is both

  866. joy and woe.

  867. It's not one or

  868. the other.

  869. We're at war with

  870. Satan and yet

  871. Christ is on the

  872. throne.

  873. It's done, he's

  874. won the victory,

  875. eternity is sure

  876. and we have heaven

  877. to look forward to.

  878. But the key to

  879. having joy and

  880. woe rather than

  881. just woe is

  882. perspective.

  883. The key is

  884. training our eyes

  885. to look past the

  886. fuzziness of our

  887. situation and our

  888. circumstance and to

  889. see what is

  890. eternally true.

  891. To see more than

  892. what first appears.

  893. The whole book of

  894. Revelation is about

  895. perspective.

  896. We talked about

  897. this when we're

  898. looking at

  899. Revelation 1.

  900. It's like God

  901. tears the curtains

  902. of time back so

  903. that John can see

  904. into eternity.

  905. He can see that

  906. God is still winning,

  907. that he is still

  908. in control and

  909. this book is

  910. designed to lift

  911. struggling Christians,

  912. those struggling

  913. with opposition and

  914. those struggling

  915. with apathy and

  916. laziness, to lift

  917. struggling Christians

  918. above their

  919. circumstance so

  920. that they can see

  921. a glorious and

  922. better hope.

  923. So that they can

  924. see the victory

  925. of the cross

  926. already achieved

  927. and so that they

  928. can begin to run

  929. with excitement

  930. to the future

  931. heaven that awaits

  932. them.

  933. It will still hurt

  934. to follow Jesus.

  935. There will still be

  936. sorrow but when

  937. our eyes are fixed

  938. on heaven,

  939. fixed on eternity,

  940. we can endure any

  941. suffering with joy.

  942. It doesn't mean we

  943. won't cry, it

  944. doesn't mean it

  945. won't be painful

  946. but in our pain,

  947. in our woe,

  948. there will be joy.

  949. I read a devotional

  950. book called Taste

  951. and See a couple

  952. of years ago,

  953. it's just a daily

  954. little bit and one

  955. thing that stuck with

  956. me and has really

  957. haunted me ever

  958. since was the story

  959. of a family of

  960. missionaries.

  961. I can't remember

  962. exactly what

  963. country they're

  964. from and that

  965. family was basically

  966. rounded up and

  967. forced to dig their

  968. own grave before

  969. they were going to

  970. be executed for

  971. doing Christian

  972. ministry in this

  973. country.

  974. It was a father

  975. and a mother and

  976. three children.

  977. So they dug their

  978. own grave with the

  979. soldiers standing

  980. around, guns ready.

  981. Just before they're

  982. about to be killed,

  983. the dad asked if

  984. they could kneel and

  985. pray first before

  986. they were shot and

  987. the soldiers allowed

  988. them to kneel down

  989. and pray and as

  990. they began to pray,

  991. the eldest son ran.

  992. He jumped up and

  993. just bolted off into

  994. the bush and the

  995. soldiers got very

  996. aggressive and were

  997. ready to go after

  998. him and the dad

  999. asked them not to

  1000. chase the son.

  1001. He said,

  1002. please allow me to

  1003. call him back.

  1004. And the dad said

  1005. to his son,

  1006. please come back.

  1007. It is better for

  1008. us to enter,

  1009. eternity together

  1010. today than for

  1011. you to live with

  1012. a regret of

  1013. fleeing from

  1014. faithfulness.

  1015. The question I

  1016. find myself asking

  1017. when I hear a

  1018. story like that is

  1019. how did he do

  1020. that?

1021. If I was in the

  1022. situation with my

  1023. son, would I call

1024. him back or would I

  1025. cheer and try and

  1026. slow down the

  1027. soldiers so that he

  1028. could get away?

  1029. How did he do

  1030. that?

  1031. And the answer is

  1032. perspective.

  1033. The answer is he

  1034. had trained his

  1035. eyes and his heart

  1036. to see more than

1037. what was in front of

  1038. him.

  1039. He wasn't consumed

  1040. by the soldiers and

  1041. the guns and the

  1042. grave and the death

  1043. that he knew was

  1044. coming.

  1045. He had trained his

1046. eyes and his heart to

  1047. see the cross first

  1048. and the victory

1049. that was won on the

  1050. cross and the

  1051. sure hope he had

  1052. for heaven.

1053. And so even in the

  1054. pain of anticipating

  1055. the death of his

  1056. children and his

  1057. wife, there was the

  1058. joy of knowing that

  1059. soon they would all

  1060. enjoy perfect eternity

  1061. with God.

  1062. the key to not

  1063. loving our lives

  1064. too much, to not

  1065. loving the things in

  1066. our lives too much,

  1067. is training our

  1068. eyes on the two

  1069. key moments in

  1070. eternity.

  1071. The two key moments

  1072. that stand either side

  1073. of us.

  1074. The first is the

  1075. victory of the cross,

  1076. the complete and

  1077. irreversible victory of

  1078. the cross which

  1079. enables you to be

  1080. forgiven and loved

  1081. and adopted and

  1082. which enabled Jesus

  1083. to ascend to his

  1084. throne where he

  1085. reigns forever.

  1086. And that first

  1087. point points toward

  1088. and guarantees the

  1089. second point.

1090. We live here in the

  1091. middle.

  1092. You've got the cross

  1093. and the second point

  1094. is Jesus coming back.

  1095. It's the guarantee

1096. that the king on the

  1097. throne will come and

  1098. gather up his

  1099. subjects.

  1100. He will bring the

  1101. comfort and the

  1102. joy and the

  1103. satisfaction.

  1104. He will remove the

  1105. pain and the

  1106. suffering and the

  1107. sickness and the

  1108. death.

1109. He will fill us with

  1110. pleasure beyond our

  1111. wildest imagination

  1112. as we spend

  1113. eternity in the

  1114. presence of the

  1115. good and loving

  1116. and gracious

  1117. God.

  1118. The key is to

  1119. train your eyes to

  1120. see past today,

  1121. to see past this

  1122. week, this year,

  1123. to see the cross

  1124. and heaven.

  1125. those two things

  1126. bring joy into the

  1127. war that is raging.

  1128. John saw a great

  1129. and wondrous sign in

  1130. heaven.

  1131. He saw war and

  1132. pain and suffering

  1133. in this life,

  1134. but he saw his

  1135. risen Savior Jesus

  1136. on the throne and

1137. he saw hope for the

  1138. day when it would

  1139. all be made right.

1140. As you look at the

  1141. mess in your own

  1142. life now, as you

  1143. look at the world

  1144. around us, train

  1145. your eyes to see

  1146. the hope and

  1147. victory of Jesus.

  1148. Train your heart to

  1149. see Jesus because

1150. in him and in his

  1151. kingdom there is joy

  1152. even in woe.

  1153. There is peace even

  1154. in uncertainty and

  1155. there is hope even

  1156. in death.

  1157. Train your eyes,

  1158. train your heart

  1159. and fix them on

  1160. Jesus.

  1161. Let's pray.

  1162. Father God, we

  1163. want to confess

  1164. that we are so

  1165. quick to desire

  1166. and settle for

  1167. less than you have

  1168. designed for us.

  1169. We want to

  1170. acknowledge that we

  1171. get overwhelmed by

  1172. our situation and

  1173. our circumstance.

  1174. Father, there are

1175. many of us in this

  1176. room who right now

  1177. are dealing with

  1178. pain and doubt

  1179. and frustration

  1180. when it comes to

  1181. our lives following

  1182. you.

  1183. God, please lift

  1184. our eyes, train

  1185. our eyes, train

  1186. our hearts to

  1187. focus on the

  1188. cross, to focus

  1189. on the victory

  1190. that you won in

  1191. Jesus.

  1192. Open our eyes to

  1193. see the hope that

  1194. awaits us, to

  1195. look forward with

  1196. anticipation, to

  1197. not love our lives

  1198. or things in our

  1199. lives because we

  1200. know that there

  1201. is something

  1202. better that you

  1203. have prepared for

  1204. us.

  1205. Give us the joy

  1206. and the peace and

  1207. the hope that you

  1208. promised that is

  1209. bigger than any

  1210. circumstance in our

  1211. life.

  1212. Give us the

  1213. humility and the

  1214. honesty to admit

  1215. when we're

  1216. struggling.

  1217. Give us the

  1218. love for one

  1219. another to

  1220. rejoice as we

  1221. overcome, as we

  1222. find joy.

  1223. Give us the love

  1224. for one another

  1225. that we might

  1226. struggle together,

  1227. that we might

  1228. bear with one

  1229. another.

  1230. Father God,

  1231. please imprint

  1232. Jesus on our

  1233. hearts and minds

  1234. so that we may

  1235. love you more

  1236. than anything

  1237. else, so that

  1238. we may live

  1239. wanting more

  1240. than anything

  1241. else to get

  1242. to that future

  1243. kingdom that

  1244. awaits us.

  1245. And we pray,

  1246. please come

  1247. soon.

  1248. Amen.

  1249. Amen.

  1250. Let's continue in

  1251. prayer.

  1252. Almighty God

  1253. and merciful

  1254. Father, we

  1255. give you humble

  1256. and heartfelt

  1257. thanks for all

  1258. your goodness and

  1259. loving kindness to

  1260. us and to all

  1261. people.

  1262. We bless you for

  1263. our creation and

  1264. preservation and

  1265. all the blessings of

  1266. this life, but

  1267. above all for your

  1268. immeasurable love in

  1269. the redemption of
