  1. I know a man who was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for a double murder.

  2. He murdered a mother and her baby.

  3. This was a number of years ago.

  4. At one point, this man was placed in the same section of Long Bay Jail

  5. as the guys who were involved, who were convicted for murder in the Milpere Bicy Bicy massacre

  6. back in Father's Day in 1984, I think it was.

  7. I'm a bit vague. I was pretty young at the time.

  8. And in that massacre, I think six bikies were killed,

  9. but they gunned down a 14-year-old girl in the crossfire, an innocent girl.

  10. And so one day in Long Bay Jail, these bikies grabbed hold of this bloke that I know,

  11. beat him up really badly, poured boiling water all over him and put him in intensive care.

  12. And the reason they did that was because they considered him to be such a lowlife for having killed a baby.

  13. Now, I find it remarkable.

  14. It's a remarkable trait of the pride-driven human heart

  15. that no matter where we are, no matter what we're guilty of,

  16. we can always find someone who makes us feel morally superior.

  17. Even in a supermax prison, surrounded by the worst of the worst,

  18. you will always find someone who makes you feel better.

  19. There will always be someone who will make our sinfulness and our lack of righteousness

  20. look positively praiseworthy in our eyes.

  21. Much like the Pharisee in the parable that was read out to us in Luke 18,

  22. where he says,

  23. God, I thank you that I'm not like other men.

  24. And especially that tax collector over there.

  25. What a scumbag.

  26. Jesus directed this parable, he says right at the beginning in verse 9,

  27. to those who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else.

  28. And the parable has a really tough ending.

  29. And the tough ending of this parable tells me that our core value of humble authenticity

  30. that we're looking at tonight is a matter of life and death.

  31. This is how Jesus puts it.

  32. I tell you that this man, the tax collector, rather than the other,

  33. went home justified before God,

  34. for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.

  35. That is, God will humble them.

  36. God will, in effect, crush them.

  37. And he who humbles himself will be exalted.

  38. God will lift up the humbled.

  39. So this issue of self-righteousness and humility is so crucial

  40. because it is ultimately about life and death and eternal life and death.

  41. And there is a stark contrast between the Pharisee and the tax collector

  42. and how they arrive at their self-evaluations.

  43. The Pharisee assesses his righteousness by looking at someone that he considers a scumbag.

  44. His tax collector.

  45. The tax collector, humbled by his own sense of sin,

  46. calls out to God.

  47. He doesn't even look up to heaven.

  48. He doesn't even look at God.

  49. He is so crushed by his sin and he calls out to God.

  50. John Calvin, bloke from years ago, said,

  51. It is certain that man never achieves a clear knowledge of himself

  52. unless he has first looked upon God's face

  53. and then descends from contemplating him to scrutinizing himself.

  54. For we always seem to ourselves righteous and upright and wise and holy.

  55. This pride is innate in all of us.

  56. Unless, by clear proofs, we can stand convinced of our own unrighteousness,

  57. foulness, folly and impurity.

  58. And so that's what we're going to do tonight.

  59. Take a leaf out of Calvin's book

  60. and we are going to begin with contemplating God first

  61. and having contemplated the majesty and holiness of God,

  62. we'll get an assessment of ourselves as human beings.

  63. So let's have a look.

  64. Isaiah invites us to share his vision of God in Isaiah 6, verses 1 to 4,

    Isaiah 6:1–4

  65. if you come with me on that one.

  66. Isaiah 6, 1 to 4.

  67. And this is obviously just one glimpse of God,

  68. but I think it'll be enough for us at least to start for tonight.

  69. And then you can continue on from here,

  70. studying the attributes of God.

  71. One thing that I want to encourage you to do.

  72. Attributes of God and study your own human heart.

  73. Know your heart and know God.

  74. At least seven glimpses of God here in these first four verses.

  75. Firstly, in verse 1, it says we see that God is alive.

  76. King Uzziah is dead, but God lives.

  77. Psalm 90, verse 2 says,

    Psalms 90:2

  78. That's two sermons ago I said that.

  79. God is ultimate reality because he existed before anything was made.

  80. God was the living God when this universe banged into existence.

  81. And that's not a sneaky reference to the Big Bang there.

  82. He was the living God in 1966 when Time magazine put on their front cover,

  83. God is dead.

  84. And he will be alive, living 10 trillion ages from now

  85. when all the puny human pot shots at his existence have dropped into oblivion

  86. like a pebble into the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

  87. Over 54 million people die each year.

  88. But not God.

  89. In a brief 120 years,

  90. this planet will be populated with at least 10 billion brand new people.

  91. And the 7.238 something or other billion of us right now

  92. will all be gone

  93. off the face of the earth

  94. just like King Uzziah.

  95. But not God.

  96. He always has been and he always will be alive.

  97. Secondly, we see that God is authority.

  98. Verse 2.

  99. Saw the Lord seated on a throne.

  100. God sits on his throne.

  101. And that is the picture that you see consistently throughout the Bible.

  102. God sits on his throne.

  103. He rules.

  104. All is at peace and calm in his heavenly kingdom.

  105. You get no picture of God in the Bible at all, anywhere,

  106. of God needing to cut the grass, pull the weeds out, load a truck,

  107. or direct traffic, or anything like that.

  108. He sits and he rules.

  109. The throne is his right to rule the universe that he has created.

  110. He has authority over our lives, whether we like it or not.

  111. And after him there is nowhere else to appeal.

  112. There is nothing beyond him.

  113. Thirdly, we see that God is all-powerful.

  114. The throne of his authority is not one among many thrones.

  115. It says,

  116. I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted.

  117. That throne is,

  118. God's throne is high and exalted,

  119. is that it signifies his superior power over every other throne,

  120. every other authority.

  121. No opposing authority can nullify God's decrees.

  122. He always fulfills and accomplishes what he purposes.

  123. Nothing can get in his way.

  124. As God says a little later in Isaiah 46, verse 10,

    Isaiah 46:10

  125. I make known the end from the beginning,

  126. from ancient times,

  127. what is still to come,

  128. I say my purpose will stand,

  129. and I will do all that I please.

  130. And so to be gripped by the all-powerful sovereign God

  131. is either marvellous,

  132. because you know he's on your side,

  133. or it is terrifying,

  134. because you know that he is against you.

  135. I want to say indifference to the sovereignty of God,

  136. and he's all-encompassing power,

  137. means that you just haven't seen him.

  138. You can't be indifferent to the sovereignty of God,

  139. and he's all-encompassing power,

  140. just means you haven't seen him.

  141. You haven't seen it for what it is.

  142. Let me tell you friends,

  143. if you're a person who trusts in the Lord Jesus,

  144. in this world of chaos and instability and sin,

  145. the sovereign authority of the living God

  146. is a refuge full of joy.

  147. It is a refuge full of joy.

  148. It gets you out of bed in the morning.

  149. For me, the sovereignty of God is a matter of survival,

  150. day by day.

  151. Fourthly, we see that God is magnificent.

  152. I saw the Lord seated on a throne,

  153. high and exalted,

  154. and the train of his robe filled the temple.

  155. Most of you,

  156. a number of you,

  157. weren't even alive when this happened.

  158. 1981,

  159. Diana, Princess of Wales,

  160. married Charles,

  161. and the wedding day was televised,

  162. it was live.

  163. I was a young kid at this point,

  164. like I was 11 or something like that.

  165. And what happened was,

  166. we had sort of like a wedding party.

  167. So,

  168. that is not I did.

  169. A bunch of families got together,

  170. watched it all on this little TV.

  171. They weren't flat screens back in those days.

  172. This little TV,

  173. we're all watching this stuff,

  174. all the weddings happening.

  175. And I can remember it vividly

  176. in this person's lounge room.

  177. It's the middle of the night.

  178. And,

  179. what are we doing here?

  180. At a wedding,

  181. for goodness sake.

  182. But the big moment was,

  183. when Diana copped out of the carriage,

  184. and started to walk up the steps of,

  185. of St Paul's Cathedral in London.

  186. And as she got out of the carriage,

  187. the train of her dress,

  188. just kept coming,

  189. and kept coming,

  190. and kept coming,

  191. and kept coming.

  192. It was eight metres long.

  193. And I didn't care,

  194. but all the women in the room went,

  195. oh,

  196. wow,

  197. look at that.

  198. And,

  199. really?

  200. That was my response,

  201. as an 11 year old boy,

  202. and frankly,

  203. it still would be now.

  204. But,

  205. what would it mean,

  206. if the train of her dress,

  207. not just filled the steps,

  208. as a ball's cathedral,

  209. but all inside cathedral,

  210. all the pews,

  211. and the,

  212. the choir loft,

  213. and the pulpit,

  214. and the,

  215. the balconies,

  216. and the whole lot,

  217. it was all made out of one piece of material.

  218. I think the oohs,

  219. and the ahs,

  220. and the wows,

  221. would be even more,

  222. magnificent,

  223. because that's the picture,

  224. of the train,

  225. of the robe,

  226. of God's,

  227. fills,

  228. all of the heavenly realms.

  229. It,

  230. it,

  231. it,

  232. the picture here,

  233. is that God is incomparable,

  234. in his splendor.

  235. The fullness of God's splendor,

  236. shows itself,

  237. in thousands,

  238. and millions of ways,

  239. in what he has made,

  240. from the heights of the galaxies,

  241. and,

  242. you know,

  243. like,

  244. you go out there,

  245. in the middle of the darkness,

  246. I know you can't do it in Chatswood,

  247. but you go out there,

  248. in the middle of the darkness,

  249. and you just see the galaxies,

  250. and you just read the passages,

  251. where God says,

  252. I just placed that one there,

  253. and that one there,

  254. and that one there,

  255. and spoke them into existence,

  256. from the heights of the galaxies,

  257. to the depths of the ocean,

  258. right down in the darkest deeps,

  259. of the ocean,

  260. where there are strange little fish,

  261. that have their own headlights,

  262. and some of them have got these dangly lights,

  263. on the front of them,

  264. and some are attached to their chins,

  265. and some are at the bottom of their eyes,

  266. and the noses glow,

  267. and you can't even get your rod there,

  268. and you go,

  269. what are they there for?

  270. I don't know,

  271. except,

  272. it's a display of the splendor,

  273. of God.

  274. You see,

  275. God is lavish in his splendor,

  276. and his creative fullness,

  277. spills over,

  278. spills over in excessive beauty,

  279. and if that's the way the world is,

  280. in all its,

  281. intricate detail,

  282. and beauty,

  283. and majesty,

  284. how much more spectacular,

  285. is the God who,

  286. thought it all up,

  287. and brought it all into existence?

  288. Fifthly,

  289. God is revered,

  290. above him,

  291. were seraphs,

  292. each with six wings,

  293. with two wings,

  294. they cover their faces,

  295. with two they cover their feet,

  296. and with two,

  297. they were flying.

  298. For whatever is going on here,

  299. these six strange winged creatures,

  300. with feats,

  301. and eyes,

  302. and intelligence,

  303. they never appear in the Bible again,

  304. at least,

  305. not under the name of seraphim.

  306. One thing is for sure,

  307. given the grandeur,

  308. of the,

  309. the scene,

  310. that we get a glimpse here,

  311. of the heavenly realms,

  312. and the power,

  313. of these angelic hosts,

  314. it's best for us,

  315. not to picture,

  316. chubby little babies,

  317. with wings,

  318. flushing around the ears of God.

  319. That's not the picture here.

  320. These are awesome beings.

  321. Verse four says,

  322. that when one of these dudes here,

  323. speak,

  324. the,

  325. the foundations of the temple,

  326. the foundations of heaven,

  327. shake.

  328. So there's no puny,

  329. silly little creatures in heaven,

  330. only magnificent one.

  331. And even they,

  332. these magnificent beings,

  333. as great and as good as they are,

  334. as untainted by human sin,

  335. as they are,

  336. even they,

  337. revere their maker,

  338. with great humility.

  339. Two wings cover their face,

  340. they won't even look upon the Lord,

  341. nor do they even feel worthy,

  342. to have their feet uncovered in his presence,

  343. two are covering their feet.

  344. How much more,

  345. would we shudder and quake in his presence?

  346. We,

  347. who could not even bear to endure,

  348. the presence of one of these seraphs.

  349. They,

  350. they,

  351. they would freak us out.

  352. Six,

  353. God is holy,

  354. verse three,

  355. and they were calling to one another.

  356. This,

  357. this is the seraphs,

  358. the ones who speak,

  359. and the whole foundation shudder.

  360. Holy,

  361. holy,

  362. holy,

  363. holy,

  364. is the Lord almighty.

  365. The possibility of language,

  366. carries the meaning of God,

  367. and eventually,

  368. you get to a point,

  369. where it just runs out.

  370. I mean,

  371. what's left there to say?

  372. And the word holy,

  373. carries us to the brink.

  374. This is,

  375. this is kind of as far as we go.

  376. And from there,

  377. the experience of God,

  378. is,

  379. is beyond words for us.

  380. And the reason I say that,

  381. is every effort that you have,

  382. in terms of trying to define,

  383. what the holiness of God means,

  384. it just keeps coming back around to say,

  385. God is holy,

  386. means,

  387. God is God.

  388. That's basically it.

  389. God is one of a kind,

  390. in a class by himself.

  391. In that sense,

  392. he is utterly holy,

  393. but then you have just said nothing more,

  394. than he's God.

  395. God is absolute reality,

  396. beyond which there is only more of God.

  397. There's nothing beyond God.

  398. There's nothing else that he answers to.

  399. There's nothing else that he is separated from,

  400. to make him distinct in his being.

  401. He is incomparable.

  402. His holiness determines all that he is,

  403. and all that he does,

  404. and it's not determined by any person,

  405. or anything.

  406. The arrogance of human beings,

  407. to think that we can determine,

  408. what God is like.

  409. His holiness is what he is as God,

  410. which no one else will be.

  411. His holiness determines,

  412. what it means is that,

  413. he's not me,

  414. and he's not you.

  415. He is other than us.

  416. Then the seventh and final thing about God,

  417. God is glorious.

  418. Verse 3,

  419. Holy,

  420. holy,

  421. holy is the Lord God Almighty.

  422. The whole earth,

  423. is full of his glory.

  424. And the best way to understand that,

  425. in this context,

  426. is probably to say,

  427. the glory of God,

  428. is the display,

  429. or the exhibition,

  430. of his holiness.

  431. God's holiness,

  432. is the incomparable perfection,

  433. of his divine nature,

  434. and his glory,

  435. is when,

  436. that divine nature,

  437. is made public to us,

  438. so that we can see it.

  439. God is glorious,

  440. means,

  441. that his being,

  442. has gone public,

  443. so that we can understand,

  444. what he's like.

  445. In Leviticus 10 verse 3,

    Leviticus 10:3

  446. God says,

  447. Among those who approach me,

  448. I will show myself holy,

  449. in the sight of all people,

  450. I will be honoured,

  451. or a better translation,

  452. in the sight of all people,

  453. I will be glorified.

  454. When God,

  455. shows himself to be holy,

  456. what we see,

  457. is glory.

  458. And what we are meant to do,

  459. when we see glory,

  460. is worship.

  461. That's our response.

  462. And so when the seraphim say,

  463. the whole earth is full of his glory,

  464. what they're saying is,

  465. the whole earth,

  466. displays him.

  467. We're meant to make the connection.

  468. And the seraphim can say that,

  469. it's because from the heights of heaven,

  470. where they are in the throne room of God,

  471. they get to glimpse,

  472. all that God's made here,

  473. and they go,

  474. oh,

  475. oh,

  476. yeah,

  477. I get that.

  478. I get the connection.

  479. I can see how this God,

  480. has made that.

  481. And this is a reflection of this God.

  482. They see that.

  483. The whole created order reflects something of the beauty,

  484. and the character,

  485. and the worth,

  486. and the splendor,

  487. and the holiness of God.

  488. And so friends,

  489. that is the necessary first step,

  490. towards a life of humility.

  491. It is seeing something of God,

  492. something of his glory.

  493. And can I say,

  494. it is a continual process of seeing his glory.

  495. And as I said in the first sermon on this series,

  496. in Christ-centered Bible saturation,

  497. the ability to see God,

  498. is the gracious work of God in our lives.

  499. And without his help,

  500. we are blind to the facts about God.

  501. No,

  502. that's not what I said.

  503. What did I say?

  504. Two Sundays ago.

  505. We're not blind to the facts about Christ.

  506. We're blind to the glory.

  507. We can't see glory.

  508. We can't,

  509. therefore,

  510. we cannot see God.

  511. Because glory is what he's revealed.

  512. Without his help,

  513. we are blind to his glory.

  514. We can't even see God by our own strength,

  515. and that is humbling.

  516. But know this,

  517. when God graciously allows us to see him,

  518. when he reveals his glory to us,

  519. we actually,

  520. correspondingly,

  521. at the same time,

  522. we see our sin,

  523. our lack of glory.

  524. Isaiah 6,

  525. 5,

  526. Woe to me,

  527. I cried,

  528. I am ruined.

  529. For I am a man of unclean lips,

  530. and I live among a people of unclean lips,

  531. and my eyes have seen the King,

  532. the Lord Almighty.

  533. So to quote John Calvin again,

  534. Isaiah sees in this moment

  535. his unrighteousness,

  536. foulness,

  537. folly,

  538. and impurity.

  539. Impurity.

  540. And it's the same experience that Peter had

  541. when he'd been out fishing all night.

  542. Remember the occasion,

  543. he's fishing out all night,

  544. doesn't catch anything,

  545. so he kind of is about as good of a fisherman

  546. as what I am.

  547. And then Jesus comes along

  548. and says to him,

  549. cast your net on the other side of the boat.

  550. And he's like,

  551. really?

  552. And so he does,

  553. and he gets this huge haul of fish,

  554. tries to bring it on the boat,

  555. huge haul of fish.

  556. And what happens in that moment?

  557. Peter goes,

  558. my goodness,

  559. look at all these fish.

  560. Retirement plan.

  561. This is fantastic.

  562. No, he doesn't.

  563. This is how Luke records his response.

  564. When Simon Peter saw this,

  565. he fell at Jesus' knees and said,

  566. go away from me, Lord.

  567. I am a sinful man.

  568. You see,

  569. Peter had been walking with Jesus

  570. and talking with him

  571. and eating food with him for some time,

  572. and then in this moment,

  573. God allows him to see glory.

  574. And the immediate response is,

  575. I'm a sinful man.

  576. God allowed Peter to see his glory

  577. in the face of Christ in that moment.

  578. And when that happens,

  579. your own lack of glory,

  580. your own sinfulness is what's exposed.

  581. And Peter's experience

  582. is the same as Isaiah's experience

  583. because both of them got the same glimpse

  584. of the same God.

  585. John 12, 41 says,

  586. Isaiah said this

  587. because he saw Jesus' glory

  588. and spoke about him.

  589. That's a reference to Isaiah,

    Isaiah 6:1–4

  590. chapter 6, verses 1 to 4.

  591. When God allows us to see his glory,

  592. we also see how far short

  593. we have fallen of that glory.

  594. Romans 3, 23,

  595. for all have sinned

  596. and fallen short of the glory of God.

  597. The Bible diagnoses sin

  598. as a universal deformity of human nature

  599. which is found at every point

  600. in every person.

  601. The phrase that gets brandished around

  602. is total depravity.

  603. And it's commonly used

  604. to make explicit

  605. the implication of sin in our lives.

  606. It means that there is a corruption

  607. of our moral and spiritual nature

  608. which is total.

  609. Not in the sense

  610. that we are all as bad

  611. as we could be

  612. because none of us,

  613. none of us

  614. are as bad

  615. as we could possibly be.

  616. Not one of us.

  617. God graciously

  618. restrains

  619. our wickedness.

  620. If he did not,

  621. no two of us

  622. could be left

  623. in the same room

  624. at the same time.

  625. We would destroy each other.

  626. That's kind of a glimpse

  627. of hell

  628. when God takes his hands away.

  629. The only reason

  630. you are sitting here today

  631. or I'm standing here today

  632. and not in a prison cell

  633. is the gracious hand of God.

  634. My friends,

  635. that is humbling.

  636. Total depravity means

  637. that no part of us

  638. is untouched by sin.

  639. There is no action of ours

  640. that is good

  641. as it could possibly be.

  642. Even the good things we do

  643. are tainted by sin.

  644. I mentioned this morning

  645. at church this morning

  646. that a month or two ago,

  647. I can't remember exactly

  648. what it was,

  649. there was an elderly lady,

  650. she was up reading the Bible

  651. and then stepping down

  652. off the stage,

  653. I was up to preach

  654. and I grabbed,

  655. I put my hand out,

  656. she grabbed my hand

  657. and I helped her down the stairs,

  658. you know,

  659. help an old lady thing,

  660. you know,

  661. one good deed sort of stuff.

  662. And in that moment,

  663. when I saw her coming down

  664. and realizing that she needed to help,

  665. it was no problem for me

  666. to stick my hand out

  667. and help her.

  668. And once she was down safely,

  669. she walked off

  670. and I started to ascend the stairs

  671. and before I even got

  672. to the lectern,

  673. the thought in my mind was,

  674. I wonder how many people

  675. saw me do that.

  676. Just like that,

  677. just happened like that.

  678. Everything that we do

  679. is tainted by sin.

  680. You know,

  681. I don't just need

  682. the blood of Christ

  683. to cover the wrong things I do,

  684. I need the blood of Christ

  685. to cover even the good things I do

  686. because there's no such thing

  687. as a perfect performance.

  688. I don't ever get anything

  689. perfectly right.

  690. Nothing in us or about us

  691. ever will match

  692. God's perfect standards.

  693. Everything is tainted by sin.

  694. And like Isaiah,

  695. we are ruined

  696. unless something is done for us.

  697. And there is only one solution.

  698. Isaiah 6.6

  699. says that one of the seraphs

  700. flew to Isaiah

  701. with a live coal

  702. and touched his unclean lips.

  703. See,

  704. this has touched your lips,

  705. your guilt is taken away

  706. and your sin is atoned for.

  707. The seraph came from God

  708. to Isaiah

  709. to deal with Isaiah's sinfulness.

  710. God atoning for our sin

  711. is our only hope.

  712. The seraph and the live coal

  713. coming to Isaiah

  714. is simply a forerunner

  715. to God himself

  716. coming to us

  717. in the person of Jesus Christ

  718. to deal with our sin.

  719. 1 John 4.10

  720. This is love.

  721. Not that we love God

  722. but that he loved us

  723. and sent his son

  724. as an atoning sacrifice

  725. for our sins.

  726. 1 John 2.1-2

  727. makes it explicit.

  728. Jesus Christ,

  729. the righteous one,

  730. the only one who's not sinned,

  731. he is the atoning sacrifice

  732. for our sins

  733. and not only for ours

  734. but also for the sins

  735. of the whole world.

  736. We are only saved

  737. from our sin

  738. by the action of God.

  739. It is all of God

  740. from first to last.

  741. And so Christianity

  742. is not about good people

  743. getting better.

  744. It's not about good people

  745. getting better.

  746. If anything,

  747. it is good news

  748. for bad people

  749. coping with their failure

  750. to do anything good.

  751. Winston Churchill.

  752. He was the master

  753. of the clever put-down.

  754. He once described

  755. a political opponent

  756. as a modest little man

  757. who had a great deal

  758. to be modest about.

  759. But the Bible

  760. consistently leads me

  761. to believe

  762. that I've got a great deal

  763. to be modest about.

  764. I've got every reason

  765. to be humble.

  766. I'm finite,

  767. I'm weak,

  768. I'm limited,

  769. I'm sinful,

  770. I'm inept,

  771. I'm flawed,

  772. I have a beginning,

  773. I will have an end.

  774. And yet,

  775. the deceitfulness

  776. of sin

  777. means that I am not

  778. immune from the

  779. logic-defying effects

  780. of pride.

  781. When I first heard

  782. about that incident,

  783. about,

  784. a number of years ago,

  785. that incident about

  786. those guys

  787. in Long Bay Jail

  788. and what they did,

  789. I was amazed

  790. how self-righteous

  791. they were.

  792. What right do murderers

  793. have to judge

  794. another murderer?

  795. What makes them think

  796. they're any better?

  797. You know,

  798. those guys,

  799. I mean,

  800. my goodness,

  801. filth,

  802. scumbag of the earth,

  803. you gunned down

  804. an innocent

  805. 14-year-old girl,

  806. who gives you

  807. the right to say

  808. this guy,

  809. because he killed a baby,

  810. is worse than we are?

  811. And yet,

  812. when I say that,

  813. I actually elevate

  814. myself over them

  815. as if they're worse

  816. than I am.

  817. How easy it is

  818. to put ourselves

  819. into this parable

  820. of the Pharisee

  821. and the tax collector

  822. and know

  823. and know

  824. and know

  825. that I must be

  826. the tax collector

  827. in order to be

  828. right with God

  829. and read this

  830. parable

  831. and go,

  832. God,

  833. I thank you

  834. that I am not

  835. like that

  836. self-righteous Pharisee.

  837. The irony

  838. of sneering

  839. at the one

  840. who sneers.

  841. is so entangled

  842. in our hearts.

  843. It's so easy

  844. for us

  845. to move

  846. from dependency

  847. in Jesus

  848. back into

  849. self-dependency.

  850. The key

  851. to living

  852. the Christian life

  853. is to never

  854. get up

  855. from the foot

  856. of the cross.

  857. You came

  858. to Jesus

  859. as an open

  860. handed

  861. beggar

  862. and nothing

  863. ever changes.

  864. Nothing

  865. ever changes.

  866. When I see

  867. beggars in the street

  868. I used to think

  869. get a job.

  870. now I think

  871. that's me.

  872. I might be

  873. wearing different

  874. clothes

  875. and I might be

  876. showered

  877. but that's me.

  878. You came

  879. as an open

  880. handed beggar

  881. and nothing

  882. ever changes.

  883. I rediscovered

  884. this a fair bit

  885. recently

  886. in the last

  887. number of years

  888. in the life

  889. of Charles

  890. Simeon.

  891. he was a

  892. Christian minister

  893. suffered greatly

  894. and after

  895. you've been

  896. a Christian

  897. for 40 years

  898. he wrote

  899. this

  900. there are

  901. two objects

  902. that I've

  903. ever desired

  904. for these

  905. 40 years

  906. to behold.

  907. The one

  908. is my own

  909. vileness

  910. he means

  911. his own

  912. sinfulness

  913. and the

  914. other

  915. is the

  916. glory of

  917. God

  918. in the

  919. face

  920. of Christ

  921. and I've

  922. always

  923. thought

  924. that they

  925. should be

  926. viewed

  927. together.

  928. You want

  929. to get a

  930. bigger

  931. bigger

  932. bigger

  933. picture

  934. of

  935. God

  936. and his

  937. glory

  938. what will

  939. happen is

  940. you'll

  941. discover

  942. your own

  943. lack

  944. of

  945. glory

  946. and to

  947. mine

  948. the

  949. depths

  950. of

  951. your

  952. own

  953. lack

  954. of

  955. glory

  956. and

  957. your

  958. own

  959. sinfulness

  960. you need

  961. to cling to the

  962. cross

  963. you go

  964. together.

  965. He actually

  966. labored to know

  967. his true

  968. sinfulness.

  969. heart

  970. heart

  971. He wrote

  972. the tender

  973. heart

  974. the broken

  975. and contrite

  976. spirit

  977. are to

  978. me

  979. far above

  980. all these

  981. joys that I

  982. could ever

  983. hope for

  984. in this

  985. veil of

  986. tears.

  987. I long

  988. to be

  989. in my

  990. proper

  991. place

  992. my

  993. hand

  994. on my

  995. mouth

  996. and my

  997. mouth

  998. in the

  999. dust.

  1000. I feel

  1001. that this

  1002. is safe

  1003. ground

  1004. here I

  1005. cannot

  1006. err

  1007. for I'm

  1008. sure that

  1009. whatever

  1010. God may

  1011. despise

  1012. he will

  1013. not

  1014. despise

  1015. the

  1016. broken

  1017. and

  1018. contrite

  1019. heart.

  1020. To

  1021. paraphrase

  1022. him a

  1023. little

  1024. bit

  1025. I

  1026. think

  1027. what

  1028. he's

  1029. saying

  1030. is that

  1031. the

  1032. safest

  1033. place

  1034. in the

  1035. world

  1036. is at

  1037. the

  1038. foot

  1039. of

  1040. the

  1041. cross

  1042. of

  1043. Christ

  1044. with

  1045. your

  1046. face

  1047. in

  1048. the

  1049. dust

  1050. in

  1051. humble

  1052. submission

  1053. in

  1054. total

  1055. dependency

  1056. upon

  1057. him.

  1058. Clinging

  1059. to his

  1060. righteousness

  1061. not

  1062. yours.

  1063. And

  1064. I

  1065. think

  1066. that

  1067. he

  1068. also

  1069. gets

  1070. that

  1071. from

  1072. Isaiah

  1073. 66

  1074. 2

  1075. that

  1076. tells

  1077. us

  1078. what

  1079. actually

  1080. draws

  1081. the

  1082. approval

  1083. of

  1084. God.

  1085. Not

  1086. our

  1087. ministry

  1088. budgets

  1089. not

  1090. our

  1091. building

  1092. program

  1093. not

  1094. how many

  1095. people

  1096. are

  1097. sitting

  1098. here

  1099. in

  1100. church

  1101. not

  1102. what

  1103. sort

  1104. of

  1105. good

  1106. deeds

  1107. you

  1108. do

  1109. or

  1110. what

  1111. money

  1112. you

  1113. give

  1114. in

  1115. church

  1116. this

  1117. is

  1118. what

  1119. gets

  1120. God's

  1121. attention.

  1122. He

  1123. who

  1124. is

  1125. humble

  1126. and

  1127. contrite

  1128. in

  1129. spirit

  1130. and

  1131. trembles

  1132. at

  1133. my

  1134. word.

  1135. I

  1136. am

  1137. thoroughly

  1138. convinced

  1139. that

  1140. there

  1141. can

  1142. be

  1143. no

  1144. effective

  1145. life

  1146. Christian

  1147. growth

  1148. or

  1149. ministry

  1150. or

  1151. mission

  1152. without

  1153. the

  1154. cultivation

  1155. of

  1156. humiliation

  1157. in the

  1158. heart

  1159. and the

  1160. weakening

  1161. of pride

  1162. in the

  1163. life.

  1164. Living

  1165. living

  1166. out

  1167. humbly

  1168. in

  1169. authentic

  1170. way

  1171. will

  1172. look

  1173. sort

  1174. of

  1175. like

  1176. this.

  1177. When

  1178. you're

  1179. confronted

  1180. with

  1181. the sin

  1182. and the

  1183. failure

  1184. of

  1185. another

  1186. person

  1187. you'll

  1188. be

  1189. more

  1190. aware

  1191. the

  1192. humble

  1193. person

  1194. will

  1195. be

  1196. more

  1197. aware

  1198. of

  1199. their

  1200. own

  1201. sin

  1202. and

  1203. their

  1204. own

  1205. failure

  1206. towards

  1207. God

  1208. than

  1209. another

  1210. person's

  1211. sin and

  1212. failure

  1213. towards

  1214. them.

  1215. That's

  1216. humility.

  1217. you'll

  1218. be more

  1219. aware of

  1220. your

  1221. own

  1222. failure

  1223. than

  1224. another

  1225. person's

  1226. failure.

  1227. Therefore

  1228. you'll

  1229. be less

  1230. judgmental

  1231. and less

  1232. critical.

  1233. You'll

  1234. also

  1235. mean that

  1236. you won't

  1237. try and

  1238. smooth over

  1239. your sin

  1240. to excuse

  1241. it, make

  1242. it less

  1243. than what

  1244. it is.

  1245. You'll

  1246. be real

  1247. about it.

  1248. I'll be

  1249. frank with

  1250. you.

  1251. I'm

  1252. standing

  1253. here looking

  1254. at all

  1255. you right

  1256. tonight and

  1257. I think

  1258. you're a

  1259. bunch of

  1260. rotten

  1261. sinners.

  1262. That is

  1263. my

  1264. assumption.

  1265. My

  1266. assumption

  1267. with every

  1268. single

  1269. person sitting

  1270. here right

  1271. now is

  1272. that you

  1273. all have

  1274. skeletons in

  1275. the closet

  1276. that you

  1277. would be

  1278. absolutely

  1279. mortified if

  1280. we jammed

  1281. them up there

  1282. on the

  1283. screen right

  1284. now.

  1285. The reason

  1286. I know it's

  1287. true is

  1288. because that's

  1289. me as well.

  1290. I work on

  1291. the assumption

  1292. that you're

  1293. all human

  1294. and you've

  1295. all fallen

  1296. short of the

  1297. glory of

  1298. God.

  1299. reality

  1300. and I

  1301. believe

  1302. that

  1303. reality

  1304. ought to

  1305. be evident

  1306. more and

  1307. more in

  1308. the church.

  1309. When we

  1310. present that

  1311. we've got it

  1312. all together

  1313. and we

  1314. present that

  1315. to the

  1316. world,

  1317. it is

  1318. anti-gospel.

  1319. Let me

  1320. give you an

  1321. example of

  1322. authenticity.

  1323. One episode

  1324. of the TV

  1325. show The

  1326. Simpsons,

  1327. Homer Simpson

  1328. is being

  1329. interviewed

  1330. for a job

  1331. at the

  1332. nuclear power

  1333. plant,

  1334. Springfield

  1335. nuclear power

  1336. plant.

  1337. There's two

  1338. jobs,

  1339. three blokes

  1340. going for

  1341. an interview.

  1342. The three

  1343. of them

  1344. were asked

  1345. the question,

  1346. what would

  1347. each of you

  1348. say is

  1349. your worst

  1350. quality?

  1351. The first

  1352. guy says,

  1353. well,

  1354. I'm a

  1355. workaholic.

  1356. The second

  1357. guy says,

  1358. he responds

  1359. in a similar

  1360. kind of

  1361. self-righteous,

  1362. not really a

  1363. weakness,

  1364. more like a

  1365. strength kind

  1366. of way.

  1367. He says,

  1368. I push

  1369. myself too

  1370. hard.

  1371. Homer Simpson

  1372. on the other

  1373. hand answers,

  1374. well,

  1375. it takes me a

  1376. long time to

  1377. learn anything.

  1378. I'm kind of a

  1379. goof off and

  1380. things start to

  1381. disappear from

  1382. the workplace.

  1383. And he

  1384. starts going on

  1385. and the

  1386. interviewer,

  1387. that's enough,

  1388. that's enough.

  1389. Somehow he got

  1390. the job.

  1391. Now,

  1392. I want to say

  1393. to you,

  1394. I don't

  1395. recommend it

  1396. as an

  1397. interview

  1398. technique.

  1399. But the

  1400. honesty is

  1401. refreshing.

  1402. His

  1403. authenticity

  1404. is appealing

  1405. especially

  1406. against the

  1407. self-righteous

  1408. false humility

  1409. of the other

  1410. two.

  1411. Because that's

  1412. what false

  1413. humility is.

  1414. It's actually

  1415. pride in

  1416. disguise.

  1417. Designed to

  1418. extract

  1419. praise.

  1420. My friends,

  1421. we start the

  1422. Christian life as

  1423. beggars at the

  1424. foot of the

  1425. cross and we

  1426. finish the

  1427. Christian life as

  1428. beggars at the

  1429. foot of the

  1430. cross.

  1431. As we sing,

  1432. nothing in my

  1433. hand I bring,

  1434. only to the

  1435. cross I cling.

  1436. It never

  1437. changes.

  1438. We must

  1439. labor to lay

  1440. aside any

  1441. remnant of

  1442. self-righteousness

  1443. that lurks in

  1444. our hearts and it

  1445. lurks there in

  1446. every dark

  1447. corner.

  1448. At the cross is

  1449. where we must

  1450. begin and end

  1451. if we have

  1452. experienced the

  1453. daily joy of

  1454. living by God's

  1455. transforming grace.

  1456. grace.

  1457. We need the

  1458. spirit of God

  1459. to help us to

  1460. see our total

  1461. spiritual bankruptcy

  1462. and also to

  1463. drink deeply

  1464. from God's

  1465. infinite grace

  1466. to us in the

  1467. Lord Jesus.

  1468. May we experience

  1469. both deep

  1470. humiliation for

  1471. our sin and

  1472. deep joy in

  1473. Christ at the

  1474. same time.

  1475. And then in

  1476. deep awareness

  1477. of what we have

  1478. received,

  1479. looking only to

  1480. Jesus and

  1481. only having

  1482. our comparison

  1483. with him,

  1484. may we extend

  1485. that same

  1486. spirit of

  1487. grace to

  1488. others as we

  1489. authentically live

  1490. out who we

  1491. are, beggars,

  1492. in daily need

  1493. of grace.

  1494. Amen.
