  1. Heavenly Father, we are indeed grateful that we can meet here tonight in freedom, in peace,

  2. to understand you, to explore you, to worship you, to focus our lives together around you.

  3. We thank you for that privilege and we understand that not everyone in the world, not all Christian people can do that.

  4. So please protect that opportunity in this country.

  5. Protect this church, protect all who would like to gather in the name of Christ.

  6. And Lord, tonight as we open your word and think about how it applies to our lives,

  7. please grant blessing and wisdom to the words I have to say and open our hearts to receive what you have to offer.

  8. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  9. Can you all hear me all right? Is there a big echo sound? It means I should move this somewhere.

  10. Can you hear up the back? Okay, I'm getting nods. That's good. It must just be my old age and my hearing.

  11. Thank you for the invitation to be here tonight.

  12. And it's always a privilege to come to a church where you're not regularly part of the congregation and to deliver a message.

  13. But you always do it with a little bit of fear and trepidation.

  14. Think, what have these people been through this week?

  15. I've just heard about all the amazing things that are happening at the church.

  16. Big changes and building projects.

  17. And is it a school, a junior school that's, or preschool, is it?

  18. A Chinese school?

  19. Fantastic.

  20. What a marvellous thing to be adding to your community.

  21. But of course, I come in knowing almost nothing about you.

  22. Nothing about your challenges this week.

  23. Nothing about the pressures on your life.

  24. Nothing about the sadnesses you've experienced or the joys you've had this week.

  25. We come together with a common bond that we want to know Christ.

  26. We bring all those things, all those stresses, all those joys, all those family situations,

  27. to that one goal, to know Christ.

  28. And the passage I've brought to you tonight, I think, is one that is extremely comforting,

  29. extremely liberating for those who want to know Christ.

  30. Because it's saying to us that if you know the teachings of Christ,

  31. you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.

  32. If you come to this man through this book,

  33. you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.

  34. It's an enormous claim.

  35. It's one that you'd be right to be sceptical about.

  36. One that we need to justify.

  37. One that we need to explore and see what it has to offer us today.

  38. Do you know anyone who's blind?

  39. How many people here know someone who is blind?

  40. Anyone?

  41. One, two, three people, four people do.

  42. That's quite a large percentage, actually, in any gathering.

  43. It's not the most common of problems,

  44. most common of afflictions in Australia.

  45. But around the world is a very common problem to be blind.

  46. In my Bible Society work, I've come across the names of a couple,

  47. and forgive me, I need to read them because my Chinese expression is so terrible.

  48. It's Ma Hongming and his wife, Zhao Bilian.

  49. Two Chinese people, they live in a rural village.

  50. They're in their 70s, and they've both been blind since birth.

  51. I can't imagine how hard life has been for them.

  52. How much they just haven't experienced.

  53. How much of what I take for granted is completely dark to them in their world.

  54. How difficult the just basic activities of life have been in a rural village in China,

  55. blind since birth.

  56. Well, we received a letter from them.

  57. A letter that went to the Bible Society office, I think, in Singapore.

  58. And they had received a Braille Bible that's produced at the Amity Bible Press in Nanjing.

  59. Braille Bibles are enormous things, because you know Braille,

  60. there's all the little bumps, and you run your fingers along the bumps to read when you're blind.

  61. And these are Braille Bibles that can be understood by an older Chinese couple.

  62. And the letter turned up in the office, and this is what it said.

  63. Thank you for the Bible, which we read every day.

  64. We have no worries about the future.

  65. God is with us all the time.

  66. People have asked us before if we're worried about what is to come,

  67. since we're already so old and we have no children to support us.

  68. We thank them for their concern.

  69. We told them that we simply take whatever comes our way, whenever it comes.

  70. After all, God is in control of our lives.

  71. Why should we be anxious about tomorrow?

  72. What an extraordinary thing to be able to write

  73. as you come towards, I guess, the end of their lives,

  74. having had such difficulties, such struggles,

  75. but to feel such peace, such contentment,

  76. such release from anxiety.

  77. And it's come from the Word of God.

  78. It's come from knowing the teachings of Jesus.

  79. I can hear echoes of all sorts of Bible passages

  80. that they would have read down the years,

  81. from Matthew 6 or Luke 12 or Philippians 4, 6,

  82. cast your cares, your anxieties on God,

  83. who alone knows what tomorrow will bring.

  84. Now, all of these echoes of Scripture

  85. that must be in their ears as they think about it.

  86. And our passage tonight also comes to mind

  87. because here's a couple who know the truth

  88. and the truth has set them free.

  89. They know the truth about life.

  90. They know what really matters.

  91. And knowing that truth has set them free.

  92. Now, of course, it hasn't set them free

  93. from their daily struggles,

  94. from making a cup of tea when you're blind

  95. or from working out where the money's going to come from

  96. or who is going to care for me when I'm old.

  97. They've still got the daily struggles,

  98. more struggles than we can possibly imagine.

  99. But at a deeper level or a higher level,

  100. at a more profound level,

  101. they don't have a worry in the world.

  102. The truth has set them free.

  103. Well, friends, from this passage

  104. that was really well read for us tonight,

  105. thank you very much,

  106. I want to leave you with just four thoughts

  107. around what it means to be set free

  108. in the truth about Christ.

  109. Four thoughts about what it means

  110. to be radically free.

  111. Not free from every anxiety,

  112. not free from worrying about what Christmas presents

  113. you've got to buy for your uncle

  114. or not worried about your job,

  115. released from worrying about your job next year

  116. or your marriage or whatever it is,

  117. but radical freedom.

  118. The kind of freedom you get

  119. when you've profoundly grasped

  120. what really matters in this world,

  121. when you've really got the truth.

  122. The first point is that

  123. when you come to know the truth through Jesus,

  124. you enter into a relationship

  125. with him and his father.

  126. And it's described in the Bible

  127. as a disciple relationship.

  128. When you know the truth,

  129. you enter into a relationship

  130. with Jesus and his father in heaven.

  131. Very few religions actually offer you

  132. a relationship with God.

  133. Most religions are about law keeping,

  134. about appeasing the anger of the deity

  135. or about keeping your place in life.

  136. Maybe adding some wisdom,

  137. understanding the world a bit better.

  138. But very few religions offer you this,

  139. the idea that you would know God

  140. and be known by God.

  141. If you hold my teaching,

  142. says Jesus in verse 31,

  143. you're really my disciples,

  144. my followers,

  145. those who are known to me,

  146. those who are close to me.

  147. In a society like Australia,

  148. Christianity has been preached

  149. for a very long time.

  150. After all, the Bible Society came here in 1817.

  151. Bibles were available to the early convicts,

  152. to the early settlers.

  153. The message of Christianity has been preached

  154. and many people turned up in the churches

  155. and would hear that message.

  156. But so many left it at that.

  157. So many didn't take that extra step

  158. that brings you into relationship with God,

  159. to become a disciple of Jesus,

  160. someone known to Jesus

  161. and known by Jesus.

  162. Deeply understood,

  163. deeply known

  164. in a deep relationship with God.

  165. That is what Christianity offers.

  166. That's the kind of understanding of yourself

  167. that can set you free.

  168. Uniquely among religions,

  169. this is offered even to sinners,

  170. even to those who fall short of God's standards.

  171. that the truth will set you free

  172. to be in relationship with God.

  173. So firstly,

  174. if you know the truth,

  175. it sets you free

  176. to be in a real relationship

  177. with Jesus and his Father.

  178. Secondly,

  179. Jesus' teaching brings truth

  180. into a world of spin

  181. and lies.

  182. Jesus' teaching brings truth

  183. into this world

  184. that is full of spin

  185. and lies.

  186. We've never had a time

  187. where you have more access

  188. to more information

  189. about more things

  190. than today.

  191. The average person

  192. has access on their phone

  193. to more information

  194. than all the professors

  195. of the world had

  196. in the 19th century.

  197. More access to information

  198. and power

  199. than those who landed

  200. on the moon had

  201. in their computer systems.

  202. You have profound access

  203. to knowledge.

  204. The libraries of the world

  205. are open to you.

  206. Whereas in the past,

  207. to read a book,

  208. you had to go to a library,

  209. look for that book,

  210. take it out,

  211. or even worse,

  212. go to a bookshop,

  213. buy that book,

  214. take it out.

  215. You've got your online stores now.

  216. You can download them

  217. in moments.

  218. You've got access

  219. to the literature

  220. of the world

  221. that couldn't have been imagined

  222. just decades ago.

  223. And yet,

  224. how do you sort out

  225. the truth from the lies?

  226. How are you going to work out

  227. which books matter?

  228. How are you going to work out

  229. what teaching matters?

  230. Even the religious sphere alone,

  231. there's plenty of religious chatter,

  232. plenty of options

  233. available to you.

  234. I had the joy

  235. of going to an opening

  236. of an art exhibition yesterday

  237. called the Blake Religious Prize.

  238. And this is a long-standing

  239. religious art prize

  240. in Australia.

  241. It's a wonderful exhibition.

  242. It has on display

  243. all sorts of artworks

  244. dealing with the religious matters

  245. of our world.

  246. And it's extraordinarily diverse.

  247. You've got perspectives

  248. from every religion.

  249. You've got Christians,

  250. you've got Jews,

  251. you've got Hindus,

  252. you've got anti-religious material

  253. talking about religion.

  254. There's all sorts

  255. of religious chatter

  256. going on,

  257. all sorts of experiences

  258. to be had,

  259. all sorts of options

  260. being made available to you.

  261. But Jesus doesn't offer

  262. an option.

  263. He claims to have the truth.

  264. He doesn't offer

  265. one way forward.

  266. He claims to be

  267. the way forward.

  268. He doesn't offer

  269. a religious experience.

  270. he offers

  271. a relationship

  272. with the true

  273. and living God.

  274. And so when he says

  275. in verse 29,

  276. the one who sent me

  277. is with me.

  278. He has not left me alone

  279. for I always do

  280. what pleases him.

  281. He's talking about

  282. a special relationship

  283. with the living God.

  284. He's talking about

  285. the father

  286. who has sent him,

  287. who has not left him alone,

  288. whom he always pleases.

  289. He's talking about

  290. his closeness

  291. to God himself.

  292. He's making a profound

  293. and unique claim

  294. to reveal God to us

  295. because of

  296. how intimately

  297. he knows God.

  298. in a world

  299. of spin and lies,

  300. Jesus doesn't

  301. offer us an option,

  302. but he holds

  303. out to us

  304. the truth.

  305. In a confusing world,

  306. that's very welcome.

  307. Thirdly,

  308. from this passage,

  309. knowing the truth

  310. about Jesus

  311. releases you

  312. from false religion.

  313. You may be

  314. someone who

  315. wants to serve God,

  316. who attends

  317. something like

  318. a prize exhibition,

  319. yearning to find

  320. religious experience

  321. and understanding,

  322. yearning to know

  323. what is true,

  324. deeply searching.

  325. Well,

  326. Jesus,

  327. through his teaching,

  328. promises to release

  329. you from false religion.

  330. And this is what

  331. was so difficult

  332. for the Jewish

  333. teachers of the day.

  334. In the passage

  335. that we've read,

  336. you see some of

  337. the confusion

  338. and difficulty

  339. that the Jews

  340. had with understanding

  341. who Jesus was.

  342. back in verse 21,

  343. Jesus says,

  344. I'm going to go away.

  345. You'll look for me.

  346. You'll die in your sin

  347. because where I go,

  348. you can't come.

  349. And they say,

  350. what is he talking

  351. about here?

  352. Is he about to

  353. commit suicide

  354. and leave us

  355. that way?

  356. What does he mean

  357. we can't follow him?

  358. There's confusion

  359. among the Jewish

  360. leaders about

  361. who he is.

  362. And a deep

  363. contrast,

  364. I think,

  365. between Jesus

  366. himself

  367. and these Pharisees.

  368. Whereas they have

  369. endeavoured

  370. to serve God,

  371. endeavoured

  372. to keep the law,

  373. endeavoured to

  374. every jot and tittle

  375. of the law,

  376. as they say,

  377. every particular

  378. commandment

  379. in precision

  380. will be kept

  381. by us

  382. to please God.

  383. Jesus says,

  384. to them,

  385. you'll die

  386. in your sin.

  387. Extremely offensive

  388. thing to say.

  389. Imagine if that's

  390. what your church

  391. leaders are saying.

  392. This is the way

  393. to go.

  394. And someone comes

  395. along and says,

  396. no,

  397. you'll die in your sin.

  398. You've got it

  399. all wrong.

  400. You've got it

  401. wrong.

  402. You are from below,

  403. he says in verse 23.

  404. I'm from above.

  405. You're of this world,

  406. but I'm not of this

  407. world.

  408. I told you,

  409. you would die

  410. in your sins.

  411. If you do not

  412. believe me,

  413. if you do not

  414. believe that I am

  415. he,

  416. you will indeed

  417. die in your sins.

  418. And with that

  419. comment,

  420. Jesus changes

  421. the game

  422. about religion.

  423. The Pharisees

  424. are thinking,

  425. if I obey the law,

  426. I will please God.

  427. Jesus comes and

  428. says,

  429. if you only do

  430. that,

  431. you will die

  432. in your sins.

  433. If you believe

  434. me

  435. and follow

  436. me,

  437. the truth

  438. will set you

  439. free.

  440. This profound

  441. contrast is set up

  442. between Jesus

  443. and religion.

  444. the Pharisees

  445. struggle with

  446. this.

  447. You can

  448. understand them

  449. struggling with

  450. this.

  451. This is a very

  452. difficult concept

  453. to grasp,

  454. but Jesus

  455. keeps showing

  456. them a true

  457. understanding of

  458. what God's law

  459. is all about.

  460. A true

  461. understanding of

  462. God's law

  463. leads you to

  464. commitment to

  465. God himself,

  466. changed hearts,

  467. not just

  468. changed behaviour

  469. and obedience

  470. to the law.

  471. He presents

  472. a very

  473. profound

  474. teaching here

  475. to the

  476. Pharisees.

  477. In verse

  478. 21-22,

  479. as we've

  480. said,

  481. he claims

  482. to be able

  483. to judge.

  484. Sorry,

  485. verse 26,

  486. he claims

  487. to be able

  488. to judge.

  489. I have much

  490. to say in

  491. judgment of

  492. you,

  493. you religious

  494. leaders,

  495. but he who

  496. sent me is

  497. trustworthy and

  498. what I've

  499. heard from

  500. him,

  501. I tell the

  502. world.

  503. Jesus takes

  504. a position

  505. of God

  506. as judge.

  507. What a

  508. thing to

  509. wrestle with

  510. as a

  511. religious

  512. leader.

  513. He claims

  514. to be

  515. super close

  516. to the

  517. father,

  518. so close

  519. that they

  520. can't

  521. understand

  522. it.

  523. He's

  524. claiming

  525. that they

  526. are one.

  527. The one

  528. who sent

  529. me is

  530. with me.

  531. He has

  532. not left

  533. me alone.

  534. What a

  535. difficult

  536. thing for

  537. a monotheistic

  538. religion to

  539. grapple with.

  540. The Jews

  541. have taught

  542. that there

  543. is only one

  544. God,

  545. but here

  546. is this

  547. figure

  548. suggesting

  549. that he

  550. and the

  551. father are

  552. one.

  553. Surely

  554. that's

  555. blasphemy,

  556. surely

  557. that's

  558. sacrilege,

  559. or it's

  560. the truth.

  561. This

  562. truth will

  563. set you

  564. free.

  565. But so

  566. hard to

  567. take.

  568. Jesus

  569. teaching,

  570. when

  571. grappled

  572. with,

  573. releases

  574. you from

  575. false

  576. religion.

  577. It

  578. releases

  579. you from

  580. that idea

  581. that you've

  582. got to try

  583. hard enough

  584. to please

  585. God.

  586. It

  587. releases

  588. you into

  589. the

  590. relationship

  591. you can

  592. have even

  593. as a

  594. sinner with

  595. the living

  596. God through

  597. Jesus Christ.

  598. And

  599. fourthly,

  600. and finally,

  601. Jesus'

  602. teaching here

  603. in fact

  604. sets you

  605. free from

  606. sin and

  607. from judgment.

  608. It sets you

  609. free from

  610. sin and

  611. judgment.

  612. It's

  613. spiritually

  614. powerful.

  615. at the

  616. art

  617. exhibition

  618. I saw

  619. an amazing

  620. range of

  621. religious

  622. teaching

  623. being depicted

  624. in either

  625. video

  626. installations

  627. or

  628. paintings

  629. or

  630. sculptures.

  631. If you're

  632. into art,

  633. I'd recommend

  634. going over

  635. to the

  636. University of

  637. New South

  638. Wales College

  639. of Fine

  640. Arts and

  641. seeing the

  642. Blake

  643. Religious

  644. Prize

  645. exhibition.

  646. It's a

  647. wonderful

  648. insight into

  649. thinking about

  650. religion in

  651. contemporary

  652. Australia.

  653. But the

  654. teaching,

  655. the teaching

  656. on offer,

  657. there's a

  658. profound

  659. difference

  660. between what

  661. Jesus has

  662. to offer

  663. and what

  664. the religions

  665. of the

  666. world have

  667. to offer.

  668. Jesus

  669. claims not

  670. just to set

  671. us free from

  672. false

  673. understandings of

  674. the world,

  675. to make us

  676. wiser,

  677. to wise us

  678. up to

  679. reality.

  680. He claims

  681. to set us

  682. free from

  683. our deepest

  684. problem,

  685. from sin,

  686. from our

  687. corruption at

  688. heart.

  689. What a

  690. claim.

  691. And it's a

  692. radical

  693. exclusive

  694. claim.

  695. It's this

  696. radical

  697. exclusive

  698. claim that

  699. drives

  700. missionary

  701. work around

  702. the world.

  703. If you

  704. think you've

  705. found the

  706. core to

  707. relieving

  708. humans of

  709. their burden

  710. of sin,

  711. well, you

  712. want the

  713. world to

  714. know.

  715. You want

  716. that to be

  717. spread far

  718. and wide.

  719. You want

  720. that message

  721. to ring

  722. out here

  723. in Australia

  724. and abroad.

  725. It's because

  726. Jesus'

  727. teaching is

  728. so much

  729. more than

  730. just wise

  731. words that

  732. missionary

  733. movements like

  734. the Bible

  735. Society begin.

  736. Because we

  737. know that

  738. when people

  739. know this

  740. man, this

  741. Jesus, that

  742. truth will

  743. set them

  744. free in

  745. profoundly

  746. spiritual and

  747. deeply

  748. relational

  749. ways.

  750. Jesus isn't

  751. just a good

  752. option.

  753. He's the

  754. one through

  755. whom truth

  756. and freedom

  757. and purpose

  758. can be

  759. found.

  760. And thank

  761. God, even

  762. in his

  763. time, many

  764. came to

  765. see this

  766. immediately.

  767. Verse 30,

  768. even as he

  769. spoke, many

  770. believed in

  771. him.

  772. I think the

  773. message of

  774. forgiveness in

  775. Jesus is

  776. so liberating.

  777. It's such

  778. good news,

  779. it's hardly

  780. surprising that

  781. people often

  782. get it on the

  783. spot.

  784. That's what I've

  785. been waiting

  786. for.

  787. I've been

  788. searching the

  789. world to

  790. find the

  791. answer, to

  792. find the

  793. truth, to

  794. find the

  795. way, to

  796. find some

  797. teaching that

  798. would make

  799. a difference.

  800. And now

  801. I've heard

  802. it.

  803. Now I've

  804. heard it in

  805. Jesus, the

  806. revelation of

  807. God, the

  808. one who is

  809. at one with

  810. the living

  811. God, the

  812. Father, the

  813. one whose

  814. death can

  815. set me free

  816. from my

  817. sin, the

  818. one who can

  819. remove judgment

  820. from me.

  821. Well, that's

  822. something, why

  823. am I waiting?

  824. That's something

  825. I want.

  826. And I want

  827. it right now.

  828. And many on

  829. that day

  830. believed in

  831. him.

  832. And then in

  833. verse 31,

  834. Jesus said to

  835. them, to the

  836. Jews who had

  837. believed him,

  838. Jesus said to

  839. them, if you

  840. hold my

  841. teaching, you

  842. really are my

  843. disciples.

  844. Come to

  845. Jesus and

  846. accept the

  847. freedom and

  848. forgiveness he

  849. has to offer,

  850. and you are

  851. now in

  852. relationship with

  853. me.

  854. You're a

  855. follower of

  856. me, says

  857. Jesus.

  858. You're a

  859. disciple.

  860. Then you

  861. will know

  862. the truth.

  863. You'll

  864. have all

  865. the spin

  866. and all

  867. the lies

  868. pushed aside.

  869. You will

  870. know what

  871. really matters

  872. in this

  873. life.

  874. You'll

  875. understand God

  876. and yourself

  877. and the

  878. world that

  879. you live

  880. in.

  881. You'll

  882. know, even

  883. if you're

  884. blind and

  885. lost from

  886. the light in

  887. a village in

  888. remote China,

  889. it won't

  890. matter because

  891. you'll know

  892. the truth from

  893. the lies.

  894. It will set

  895. you free.

  896. And you'll

  897. be set free

  898. from the

  899. struggles you've

  900. had to

  901. please God,

  902. the attempts,

  903. the failures,

  904. the worry about

  905. the law, the

  906. worry about am

  907. I good enough?

  908. In Jesus, you're

  909. found to be good

  910. enough.

  911. He sets you

  912. free.

  913. And that sin

  914. and that

  915. judgment, that

  916. spiritual

  917. condemnation that

  918. so many of us

  919. feel and know is

  920. what we deserve,

  921. passes away as we

  922. come into a

  923. relationship with

  924. the living God

  925. through Jesus

  926. Christ.

  927. Friends, this

  928. Christmas, the

  929. message of Jesus

  930. coming into the

  931. world will be

  932. preached all over

  933. the country.

  934. How much we

  935. long for people

  936. to not just

  937. hear it, not

  938. just understand

  939. the story, but

  940. for it to enter

  941. our hearts so

  942. that we can all

  943. experience that

  944. freedom that

  945. comes from

  946. knowing Jesus,

  947. the true and

  948. living God,

  949. in human form.

  950. Let's pray.

  951. Heavenly Father,

  952. it's miraculous,

  953. it's miraculous

  954. that we can

  955. know you.

  956. Heavenly Father,

  957. it is stunning

  958. that you would

  959. come into the

  960. world in human

  961. form through

  962. Christ, that we

  963. might be able to

  964. grasp you in a

  965. way that we can

  966. understand.

  967. Father, it is

  968. mind-blowing that

  969. you have preserved

  970. this truth for us

  971. in the scriptures,

  972. that we have

  973. access to it here

  974. in Sydney,

  975. Australia, in the

  976. 21st century, in

  977. our language, in a

  978. format we can

  979. understand.

  980. Lord, may we not

  981. take this for

  982. granted.

  983. May we saturate

  984. ourselves in your

  985. word.

  986. word.

  987. And by doing so,

  988. may we more

  989. deeply understand

  990. your truth and

  991. experience that

  992. freedom that it

  993. gives.

  994. In Jesus' name we

  995. pray.

  996. Amen.

  997. I'll see you next time.
