  1. Father God, we thank you for the chance to gather tonight.

  2. We thank you for your word.

  3. We thank you that you're a God who wants us to know you.

  4. You're a God who reveals himself to us through your word and through your people.

  5. And God, we pray that tonight you might give us a real clear and fresh vision of you

  6. so that we might live lives of adoration and action that are fitting

  7. so that we might worship in a way that reflects your glory and your majesty.

  8. Amen.

  9. I remember when I was growing up, there was a girl that I went to school with

  10. that I used to have arguments with.

  11. I went to a Christian school, but it was mainly a Christian school in name.

  12. Not many of my friends were Christians.

  13. And even of those who said they were Christian, probably even fewer,

  14. actually followed Jesus in any active way.

  15. But this girl stuck out in particular.

  16. I remember we were planning an event.

  17. A whole bunch of people in our year group were planning a party.

  18. We'd managed to find a location for this party.

  19. We sorted out entertainment, food.

  20. It was going to be great.

  21. It was exciting.

  22. We were looking forward to it.

  23. It was planned for a Friday night.

  24. And this one girl insisted that she would not come.

  25. It's not that she didn't like the people who were going.

  26. It's not that she wasn't on board with what we were going to be doing.

  27. The thing was, she went to a church, a Seventh-day Adventist church,

  28. and she believed that worshipping God was particularly important on one day of the week.

  29. From sunset on a Friday to sunset on a Saturday, basically,

  30. they did nothing that would be constituted as work or any kind of distraction from God.

  31. And I remember in all of my youthful enthusiasm and probably in a slightly unloving way,

  32. correcting her and explaining how ridiculous it was that she would do that

  33. and that she would miss out on something fun

  34. and that she would think that God would care what she did for a couple of hours on the Friday night

  35. or, you know, that she could not worship God while she was there.

  36. In hindsight, I respect her quite a bit for her discipline.

  37. But at the time, what it did was make me ask the question a little bit,

  38. not publicly because I was too proud for that,

  39. but at least privately ask the question,

  40. when am I supposed to worship?

  41. Because my experience was I do it on Sundays.

  42. I go to church on Sundays.

  43. That's when we do the Jesus stuff,

  44. usually on a Sunday afternoon because that's when it's more fun and exciting.

  45. But that was just my experience of it.

  46. And I was trying to figure out, well, she thinks it has to be on Friday night through Saturday,

  47. and I think it happens on Sunday.

  48. So who is right?

  49. A few years later, in fact, not that long ago,

  50. I was in hospital one Christmas for several weeks,

  51. and I remember wandering out the front door for some fresh air,

  52. just for a bit of a break,

  53. and a lady was sitting there.

  54. She'd been visiting someone else, and we just struck up a conversation.

  55. Over time, we worked out that we both were followers of Jesus,

  56. and we were talking about what we believed in,

  57. and it came up talking about worship,

  58. talking about when we worship.

  59. And I talked about how I was part of a church,

  60. and I was training for ministry,

  61. and, you know, I loved Sundays.

  62. It was great to go to church and have services and be with God's people.

  63. And she slightly condescendingly smiled at me

  64. and explained how real worship needed to happen at the beginning of each day.

  65. And she explained the community that she was a part of

  66. and how they got up at 6 a.m. every day to do their worship

  67. and how that was the real worship that God wanted from his people.

  68. And I, again, full of love and grace, gently corrected her

  69. and from all of my wisdom and training explained how wrong she was.

  70. But again, it left me just asking the question,

  71. why do I do it on Sundays?

  72. Why is that the immovable object in my week?

  73. Why is that the time that I gather for worship?

  74. Because there are a lot of different people

  75. who think a lot of different things

  76. about what right and true worship looks like.

  77. We're spending four weeks talking about it.

  78. So that says there's at least some confusion.

  79. And in the passage that we come to in John 4 tonight,

  80. we find a woman who we know believes in God.

  81. We know has at least some desire to follow him.

  82. She's expecting the Messiah to come,

  83. so she knows a little bit about what God is about.

  84. And so when she meets Jesus,

  85. when she discovers that he is some sort of prophet,

  86. she wants to ask him the question.

  87. I'm a Samaritan, she says,

  88. and so I think worship happens this way in this place at this time.

  89. You're a Jew, and so you think it happens this way

  90. in this place at this time.

  91. Who's right?

  92. What is proper worship supposed to look like?

  93. And listen to Jesus' response.

  94. This is really profound in chapter 4, verse 21.

  95. Woman, Jesus replied,

  96. God is spirit,

  97. and his worshippers must worship in the spirit and in truth.

  98. The answer God gives is,

  99. sorry, the answer Jesus gives is classic Jesus.

  100. He doesn't answer the direct question about which is the right mountain.

  101. He takes her to where we were last week.

  102. He says it's not about where you worship.

  103. It's not about when you worship.

  104. It's not about this mountain or that mountain.

  105. It's not about what time of day,

  106. what time of week,

  107. or even how long.

  108. It's about who you worship.

  109. The thing that dictates what true worship looks like,

  110. this is what we spent time on last week,

  111. is who it is that you're worshipping.

  112. They will tell you where it's supposed to be

  113. and what it's supposed to look like.

  114. In fact, Jesus tells us in this little few verses

  115. that even the Jews,

  116. who were God's chosen people,

  117. who had God's law,

  118. who were expecting God's Messiah,

  119. don't have the full picture of God

  120. and don't have the full picture of what worship is going to be

  121. and the better worship that God wants.

  122. Jesus says here,

  123. God is spirit.

  124. God can't be contained in one location.

  125. He can't be contained in a particular time of day.

  126. You can't program God.

  127. God doesn't answer to your run sheet.

  128. God doesn't show up when we think he should.

  129. He doesn't fit our schedule

  130. or our ritual or anything else.

  131. We don't even have the ability

  132. to draw ourself into God's presence.

  133. So even if you found the apparent right place,

  134. that doesn't mean you could just wander up and worship.

  135. God is spirit.

  136. He is present not in a time or a place,

  137. but at all times and in all places.

  138. God is bigger than any one location.

  139. He's here as we gather now.

  140. He's with you as you get in your car

  141. and drive home after this.

  142. He's going to be there while you fall asleep tonight.

  143. He's going to be there when you're eating your breakfast,

  144. when you're alone,

  145. when you're working,

  146. when you're at school.

  147. He is always there,

  148. always present

  149. and always worthy of worship.

  150. See, the problem with this woman's question

  151. and the problem sometimes for us

  152. when we ask the question of when do we worship

  153. or where do we worship

  154. or what should it look like is

  155. that we are misunderstanding the God

  156. that we are actually trying to worship.

  157. We're trying to contain him into a block of time

  158. or a type of service or a ritual

  159. and when we do that,

  160. we misunderstand two really important things

  161. about who God is.

  162. First of all,

  163. it's like we're saying he's only there sometimes.

  164. It's like we're saying God is kind of distant from us

  165. and we've got to go meet him at his house

  166. if we're going to relate to him

  167. because that's what worship is.

  168. It's relating and interacting with God

  169. and if we say we worship

  170. at a particular time or in a particular place,

  171. what we're saying is

  172. God is only in that particular time

  173. or particular place

  174. but God has made it clear that he's not distant.

  175. The whole point of Jesus is God saying

  176. I want to draw near to you.

  177. It's God showing up to say

  178. I want to relate to you.

  179. I want to be present

  180. and now by his spirit,

  181. he dwells within us.

  182. So he is always there.

  183. You don't have to go to God's house

  184. to relate to him

  185. because you are God's house.

  186. You don't have to go to a building

  187. or a time of day.

  188. God is everywhere

  189. in every moment of every day.

  190. But the second

  191. and maybe the more dangerous misunderstanding

  192. if you try and limit worship down

  193. to a specific time or place

  194. is that what you're saying is

  195. he's only worthy of those times

  196. and those places.

  197. Remember, worship is really about

  198. the one who's being worshipped

  199. and if it's only about

  200. an hour or two in the week

  201. or 15 minutes at the start of a day,

  202. if that's enough for God,

  203. what does that say

  204. about the majesty

  205. and glory

  206. and power

  207. of the God

  208. that you worship?

  209. He doesn't seem

  210. very impressive

  211. if he just needs

  212. an hour in your week

  213. and the rest is up to you.

  214. Worship is a response

  215. to God

  216. who has revealed himself

  217. in Jesus.

  218. He's revealed himself

  219. as all-sufficient,

  220. all-satisfying,

  221. all-powerful,

  222. creator and sustainer,

  223. and he's worthy

  224. of more

  225. than we could possibly

  226. give him.

  227. So to think that worship

  228. would in any way

  229. be less

  230. than every minute

  231. of every day

  232. in every task

  233. that we do

  234. is to misunderstand

  235. the God

  236. who we come to worship.

  237. He is worthy

  238. of unceasing,

  239. exuberant,

  240. extravagant,

  241. enthusiastic worship

  242. all the time.

  243. I don't know

  244. if any of you

  245. have had the misfortune

  246. of being in a long-distance

  247. relationship.

  248. I understand

  249. it's essential

  250. for some people

  251. but reality is

  252. it's not the best-case scenario

  253. if you're going to

  254. have a relationship.

  255. You know,

  256. you see them

  257. once every so often

  258. and there's so much

  259. pressure in that time

  260. when you actually

  261. get to see them.

  262. For three weeks

  263. the best you've had

  264. is phone calls

  265. or if you're a little bit older

  266. letter writing

  267. or emails

  268. or whatever it is

  269. and so you finally

  270. get to see them

  271. for that few hours

  272. or that weekend

  273. and your whole relationship

  274. has to exist

  275. in that couple of hours.

  276. All the affection,

  277. all the joy,

  278. all the care,

  279. everything that you

  280. were trying to get

  281. out of that relationship

  282. has to be given to you

  283. in that small window

  284. and what happens is

  285. you get disappointed

  286. because you can't squeeze

  287. three weeks of love

  288. and care and affection

  289. into a couple of hours.

  290. That's not how it works.

  291. When we restrict worship

  292. to an hour a week

  293. or a part of our day

  294. or a particular location

  295. we treat God

  296. like we're in

  297. a long distance relationship.

  298. We treat him

  299. like he's not around

  300. the rest of the time

  301. and we wonder why

  302. we're not as satisfied.

  303. We wonder why

  304. we're not as in awe.

  305. We're not as in love.

  306. And it's because

  307. what we've done

  308. is we make this

  309. Sunday gathering

  310. our worship

  311. and we expect it

  312. to be enough

  313. to give us all the joy

  314. and all the strength

  315. and all the encouragement

  316. and all the satisfaction

  317. that God promises.

  318. That's not the point

  319. of this gathering

  320. because God is always there.

  321. God is always good.

  322. God is always worthy

  323. and he doesn't want

  324. a long distance

  325. relationship with you.

  326. He wants to be present

  327. in your life

  328. all the time

  329. and he is present

  330. in your life

  331. all the time.

  332. Last week I mentioned

  333. that church can often feel

  334. like a shot in the arm

  335. to get you through the week.

  336. It can encourage you.

  337. It can strengthen you.

  338. It can keep you going.

  339. Sometimes you can map out

  340. your emotion through the week

  341. from church to church.

  342. But it's not the whole truth.

  343. See, the quality

  344. of our experience

  345. as we gather

  346. to worship God here

  347. needs to be

  348. and is

  349. the overflow

  350. of the worship

  351. and the relationship

  352. that we have with God

  353. the rest of the time.

  354. You can't just

  355. turn it on here

  356. and expect it to be

  357. intimate

  358. and on fire

  359. and enthusiastic

  360. and joyful

  361. and a blessing

  362. if you just ignore God

  363. or treat him

  364. like he's not there

  365. the rest of the time.

  366. You can't turn on

  367. a relationship

  368. and then turn it off.

  369. That's why long distance

  370. relationships are difficult.

  371. Coming to church

  372. and gathering

  373. as God's people

  374. can be a shot

  375. in the arm

  376. but really

  377. it needs to be

  378. an overflow

  379. of a whole life

  380. where you're already

  381. living dependent

  382. on Jesus

  383. where you're already

  384. getting to know him

  385. in his word

  386. where you're already

  387. trusting in the forgiveness

  388. that he offers you

  389. where you're already

  390. confessing your sin

  391. and asking him

  392. to change your heart.

  393. If you're just

  394. doing it once a week

  395. you're putting a pressure

  396. on this hour

  397. this hour and 10 minutes

  398. this hour and 15 minutes

  399. that it can't hold

  400. and at best

  401. your relationship

  402. will be difficult

  403. at worst

  404. it won't work.

  405. Romans 12

  406. says to us

  407. therefore I urge you

  408. brothers and sisters

  409. in view of God's mercy

  410. to offer your bodies

  411. as a living sacrifice

  412. holy and pleasing to God

  413. this is your true

  414. and proper worship

  415. in light of who God

  416. has shown himself

  417. to be

  418. in giving his son

  419. so that we might know him

  420. a living sacrifice

  421. is what true worship

  422. looks like.

  423. Now

  424. by definition

  425. sacrifice

  426. is complete.

  427. You can't sacrifice

  428. some of yourself

  429. all the time

  430. or all of yourself

  431. some of the time

  432. sacrifice

  433. is all of yourself

  434. all of the time.

  435. The only

  436. right response

  437. the only satisfactory

  438. response

  439. to what God

  440. has done for us

  441. in Jesus

  442. is a life lived

  443. in faith

  444. every day

  445. not for an hour a week.

  446. It's a life lived

  447. in obedience

  448. and affection

  449. and commitment

  450. every day

  451. not just

  452. for an hour

  453. or a day

  454. or a morning

  455. or whatever it is

  456. you can't

  457. sacrifice

  458. some.

  459. The life

  460. that is lived

  461. in faith

  462. the life

  463. that is a living

  464. sacrifice

  465. is completely

  466. devoted to God

  467. in any

  468. and every

  469. circumstance

  470. and the key

  471. in that Romans 12

  472. verse is

  473. it's in response

  474. to what God

  475. has done for us

  476. in Jesus.

  477. Therefore

  478. in view

  479. of God's mercy

  480. because he has

  481. called you

  482. into a relationship

  483. with himself

  484. he invites you

  485. to trust him

  486. and lean on him

  487. and be satisfied

  488. in him

  489. in every minute

  490. of every day.

  491. God is spirit

  492. and so the appropriate

  493. worship of him

  494. the worship he desires

  495. is worship

  496. that's in spirit

  497. and in truth.

  498. It's the gospel

  499. shaped worship

  500. that we talked

  501. about last week

  502. worship where we

  503. are inadequate

  504. within ourselves

  505. but confident

  506. because of what

  507. God has done

  508. in Jesus.

  509. The way that

  510. the Trinity works

  511. in our relationship

  512. with God

  513. is we want

  514. a relationship

  515. with God

  516. the Father.

  517. Jesus does

  518. what needs

  519. to be done

  520. to make that

  521. possible

  522. and the Spirit

  523. connects us.

  524. So we call

  525. God our Father

  526. through the Son

  527. and by the Spirit.

  528. Stick with me.

  529. So what we mean

  530. when we pray

  531. we pray to the Father

  532. in the power

  533. of what Jesus

  534. has done

  535. by the Spirit.

  536. What that means

  537. for our worship

  538. is we worship

  539. in what Jesus

  540. has done.

  541. This is last week.

  542. Jesus is our worship.

  543. He's the perfectly

  544. obedient one.

  545. He's the one

  546. who trusts

  547. and honors

  548. His Father

  549. at all times

  550. and so our worship

  551. is in the Son

  552. and by the Spirit.

  553. What that means

  554. is because the Spirit

  555. is present in your life

  556. always,

  557. because the New Testament

  558. says that when you

  559. trust Jesus

  560. God places His Spirit

  561. in you,

  562. God is always there

  563. and always worthy

  564. of worship

  565. and by His Spirit

  566. you are always

  567. empowered to worship.

  568. worship.

  569. You always have

  570. what you need

  571. to worship.

  572. You don't need

  573. a building,

  574. you don't need

  575. a particular song,

  576. you don't need

  577. a particular group

  578. of people.

  579. All you need

  580. is the Spirit

  581. of God

  582. and what Jesus

  583. has done for you

  584. and you have

  585. those things

  586. in every minute

  587. of every day.

  588. In 1 Corinthians 10

  589. Paul says,

  590. this is his summary

  591. statement,

  592. whether you eat

  593. or drink,

  594. whatever you do,

  595. do it all

  596. for the glory

  597. of God.

  598. It's not about

  599. tasks,

  600. it's not about

  601. routines,

  602. it's not about

  603. some bits being

  604. holy and other

  605. bits being normal,

  606. whatever you do.

  607. It's all for

  608. the glory of God,

  609. it's all an opportunity

  610. to worship God,

  611. it's all an opportunity

  612. to depend on Him

  613. and trust what He

  614. has done for you.

  615. The answer to the

  616. when and where

  617. question for worship

  618. is all the time

  619. and everywhere.

  620. There is no distinction.

  621. But,

  622. that does mean

  623. that we have to ask

  624. perhaps the more

  625. difficult question,

  626. why do we do

  627. this then?

  628. If we can worship

  629. God whenever,

  630. wherever,

  631. without any of this,

  632. why do we bother

  633. gathering together?

  634. What's the point

  635. of us taking an hour

  636. or an hour and 15

  637. on a bad week

  638. or a good week

  639. depending on how

  640. you take it?

  641. What's the point

  642. of us doing that

  643. each Sunday

  644. if we can just do it

  645. all the time

  646. and everywhere?

  647. If I can worship

  648. God in the car

  649. on the way home,

  650. it's probably much

  651. quicker for me

  652. to just sit in my car

  653. in the driveway.

  654. Why gather

  655. for corporate worship?

  656. Well,

  657. as a starting point,

  658. God commands us to.

  659. Hebrews 10

  660. is going to be

  661. on the screen.

  662. Therefore,

  663. brothers and sisters,

  664. since we have

  665. confidence to enter

  666. the most holy place

  667. by the blood of Jesus,

  668. by a new and living way

  669. opened for us

  670. through the curtain

  671. that is his body,

  672. and since we have

  673. a great priest

  674. over the house of God,

  675. let us draw near to God

  676. with a sincere heart

  677. and with the full assurance

  678. that faith brings,

  679. having our hearts sprinkled

  680. to cleanse us

  681. from a guilty conscience

  682. and having our bodies

  683. washed with pure water.

  684. Let us hold unswervingly

  685. to the hope we profess

  686. for he who promised

  687. is faithful.

  688. So, so far,

  689. the writer is saying,

  690. because of what God

  691. has done in Jesus,

  692. let us draw near to God.

  693. Let us worship him.

  694. We have access to him

  695. because of God.

  696. But then listen to what he says

  697. in the same breath,

  698. in the same thought.

  699. Verse 24,

  700. let us consider

  701. how we may spur one another

  702. on toward love

  703. and good deeds,

  704. not giving up meeting together

  705. as some are in the habit

  706. of doing,

  707. but encouraging one another

  708. and all the more

  709. as you see the day approaching.

  710. So, in the same breath

  711. as encouraging you

  712. to hold on to the hope

  713. that you have in Jesus,

  714. in the same breath

  715. as saying hold on

  716. to your heavenly desire

  717. and ambition

  718. and anticipation,

  719. he says don't give up

  720. meeting together

  721. as some are in the habit

  722. of doing.

  723. If you hear the message

  724. of scripture

  725. that worship is everything,

  726. that worship is full time,

  727. that it's all of life

  728. as a reason not to gather

  729. for worship like this,

  730. then you've misunderstood

  731. what we do

  732. when we get together.

  733. You've misunderstood

  734. that there is something

  735. unique and special.

  736. The church exists

  737. to build one another up

  738. and to glorify God,

  739. to mature one another

  740. and the church is,

  741. by definition,

  742. a gathering.

  743. Ultimately,

  744. we are gathered

  745. to the Father in heaven

  746. through what Jesus has done

  747. and it's a heavenly gathering,

  748. but it gets expressed

  749. when we do this.

  750. This is a glimpse

  751. of what God has achieved

  752. in eternity.

  753. One day we will see it

  754. in its full magnitude

  755. with those who have trusted Jesus

  756. from every tribe,

  757. nation and tongue

  758. and generation,

  759. but this is the church

  760. because the church gathers.

  761. And so a Christian

  762. who by choice

  763. cuts themselves off

  764. from the gathering

  765. of God's people,

  766. cuts themselves off

  767. from the source

  768. of growth and maturity.

  769. A Christian who chooses

  770. not to gather

  771. because they think

  772. I can worship by myself,

  773. misses out on what God

  774. has given them

  775. to grow them

  776. and mature them

  777. and is ultimately

  778. a malnourished Christian.

  779. Our future eternal existence

  780. is a gathering.

  781. It probably won't look

  782. a whole lot like this.

  783. There might be little bits

  784. that are familiar,

  785. but it will be with God

  786. together.

  787. If you've got a picture

  788. of heaven

  789. that is just you and God

  790. hanging out one on one,

  791. I want you to know

  792. that God has something

  793. better in store for you

  794. than that.

  795. God is going to bless you

  796. by surrounding you

  797. with a multitude

  798. of other people

  799. who he has loved

  800. and purchased

  801. by the blood of Jesus.

  802. And he's going to use them

  803. for all eternity

  804. to reveal himself to you.

  805. We gather

  806. because God commands us to,

  807. because it feeds us.

  808. We gather

  809. because that's what

  810. forgiven people do,

  811. because it spurs us on.

  812. But one last one

  813. that I think

  814. is really important.

  815. We gather

  816. because when we do,

  817. we get to experience

  818. God's presence

  819. in a unique way.

  820. When we gather

  821. as God's people

  822. around his word,

  823. we get to experience

  824. God's presence

  825. in a unique way.

  826. Now, we need to be careful

  827. how we articulate this,

  828. because we've already said

  829. that God is everywhere,

  830. that God is present

  831. all the time,

  832. in every minute

  833. of every day.

  834. And so,

  835. we can't say

  836. that he's more present,

  837. because that wouldn't

  838. make sense.

  839. But there is

  840. something unique

  841. in the New Testament

  842. about what happens

  843. when God's people

  844. get together.

  845. Let's look at a few passages

  846. on the screen quickly.

  847. Matthew 18, verse 20,

    Matthew 18:20

  848. where two or three

  849. gather in my name,

  850. there am I with them.

  851. This is a passage

  852. about prayer,

  853. where people are agreeing

  854. in something,

  855. and Jesus says,

  856. when that happens,

  857. there am I with them.

  858. When they gather

  859. in my name

  860. for my purposes,

  861. there am I with them.

  862. 1 Corinthians 5, verse 4,

    1 Corinthians 5:4

  863. when you are assembled

  864. and I am with you

  865. in spirit,

  866. and the power

  867. of our Lord Jesus

  868. is present.

  869. This passage

  870. is talking about

  871. dealing with sexual immorality

  872. amongst the body

  873. of believers.

  874. It's a totally different

  875. passage to the Matthew one,

  876. but again,

  877. when they're assembled,

  878. the power

  879. of the Lord Jesus

  880. is present.

  881. Now, in both

  882. of those verses,

  883. surely it's redundant

  884. to say that Jesus

  885. is present

  886. when we've already

  887. heard it over and over

  888. throughout the New Testament

  889. that when we put

  890. our trust in Jesus,

  891. his spirit dwells in us

  892. and is therefore present.

  893. Why mention it again

  894. unless there is

  895. something unique

  896. about the presence

  897. that is being talked

  898. about in these passages?

  899. Many times

  900. when we open

  901. the New Testament

  902. and we hear that

  903. the spirit dwells in you,

  904. what it means is

  905. the spirit dwells

  906. in you's collective.

  907. It's not to take away

  908. from the fact

  909. that the New Testament

  910. says that the spirit

  911. dwells in you individually

  912. when you put your trust

  913. in Jesus,

  914. but over and over

  915. the New Testament

  916. says that there is

  917. something unique

  918. about the communal

  919. presence of God.

  920. For the past,

  921. I can't even think

  922. how many years

  923. I've been playing AFL

  924. as part of a team.

  925. I've played in a few

  926. different teams

  927. and with varied degrees

  928. of success,

  929. but each year

  930. from the point

  931. where I sign up

  932. on my form

  933. and I hand over

  934. my money

  935. and I pay my registration

  936. and I get my uniform,

  937. that's when I'm part

  938. of the team.

  939. I become a member

  940. of the team

  941. at that point.

  942. But the time

  943. when I'm most aware

  944. of my role

  945. or my status

  946. as a team member

  947. is when I have

  948. my uniform on

  949. and I'm gathered

  950. with the other members

  951. of my team

  952. in preparation

  953. for playing a game.

  954. It's not that I'm

  955. less a team member

  956. when I'm at home

  957. or at work

  958. or watching TV

  959. or trying to recover

  960. from the pain

  961. that football causes.

  962. My status

  963. doesn't change

  964. but when I gather

  965. with those people

  966. my awareness

  967. of my status

  968. as a team member

  969. is heightened.

  970. In the same way

  971. I am in Christ

  972. when I ask

  973. for forgiveness

  974. and I trust Jesus.

  975. When I become

  976. a Christian

  977. Jesus places

  978. his spirit

  979. in me.

  980. But when I gather

  981. with God's people

  982. my awareness

  983. of Jesus

  984. my affection

  985. for Jesus

  986. my desire

  987. for his purpose

  988. and his kingdom

  989. is heightened

  990. because I'm surrounded

  991. by a group

  992. of people

  993. that share

  994. that same experience

  995. and that same status.

  996. Because remember

  997. worship is

  998. relational.

  999. Worship is about

  1000. relating to

  1001. and loving

  1002. and adoring

  1003. our Heavenly Father

  1004. and when we gather

  1005. with God's people

1006. we get to see God

1007. through what he is doing

1008. in the people around us.

1009. We get to see God

  1010. fresh.

1011. We get a clearer vision

  1012. a fresh revelation

  1013. of him

  1014. when we see

  1015. a brother or sister

  1016. satisfied

  1017. and joyful

  1018. in God.

1019. We get to see God

  1020. more clearly

1021. when we see a brother

  1022. or sister

  1023. persevering

  1024. in difficulty.

1025. We get to see God

  1026. as they sing

  1027. and celebrate

  1028. God's goodness.

  1029. Corporate worship

  1030. is a chance

  1031. for you

  1032. to encounter

  1033. God

  1034. fresh.

  1035. Our time

  1036. together

  1037. tonight

  1038. is a chance

  1039. for you

  1040. to encounter

  1041. God

  1042. fresh.

  1043. I wonder

  1044. if you arrive

  1045. tonight

  1046. expecting God

  1047. to reveal himself

  1048. expecting him

  1049. to be present

  1050. because he's here

  1051. in a unique way

  1052. because we are here

  1053. under his name

  1054. and around his word.

  1055. He wants

  1056. to show himself

  1057. to us

  1058. tonight

  1059. so that we might

  1060. be more satisfied

  1061. in him

  1062. so that we might

  1063. be strengthened

  1064. to keep obeying him

  1065. so that we might

  1066. love him

  1067. as he deserves

  1068. so that we might

  1069. trust him

  1070. more fully.

  1071. Did you come here

  1072. to encounter

  1073. the living

  1074. saviour Jesus

  1075. or did you come

  1076. for a sermon

  1077. that wouldn't go

  1078. too long

  1079. and might be

  1080. interesting

  1081. or did you

  1082. come for the music

  1083. or did you

  1084. come for the

  1085. dinner afterwards

  1086. which we're not

  1087. providing

  1088. just to clarify

  1089. what were you

  1090. expecting

  1091. when you came

  1092. God reveals

  1093. himself

  1094. in his

  1095. gathered people

  1096. for our sake

  1097. and for those

  1098. who don't know

  1099. Jesus yet

  1100. 1 Corinthians 14

  1101. is a passage

  1102. that's correcting

  1103. a church

  1104. for some mistakes

  1105. that they're making

  1106. in their gathering

  1107. but it talks

  1108. about an unbeliever

  1109. that wanders

  1110. into the church

  1111. meeting

  1112. and sees the church

  1113. being the church

  1114. doing their thing

  1115. singing

  1116. praising

  1117. giving

  1118. all those things

  1119. and they fall

  1120. down on their knees

  1121. and respond

  1122. with surely

  1123. God is among you

  1124. that's the response

  1125. of an unbeliever

  1126. who comes in

  1127. and sees the gathered

  1128. people of God

  1129. together

  1130. the presence

  1131. of God

  1132. among his people

  1133. is a gift

  1134. to us

  1135. it's a gift

  1136. and an opportunity

  1137. for us to see

  1138. and be fed

  1139. and encouraged

  1140. and have a fuller

  1141. revelation

  1142. of who God is

  1143. every time

  1144. we gather like this

  1145. is a chance

  1146. for somebody

  1147. who doesn't know

  1148. Jesus

  1149. to walk into

  1150. the room

  1151. and encounter

  1152. God

  1153. sometimes we

  1154. try and encourage

  1155. you to bring

  1156. your unsaved

  1157. friends

  1158. those who don't

  1159. know Jesus

  1160. along to church

  1161. sometimes we have

  1162. special evangelistic

  1163. Sundays

1164. to help you do it

  1165. we don't need

  1166. special evangelistic

  1167. Sundays

  1168. the people of God

  1169. together

  1170. equals the presence

  1171. of God

  1172. so every time

  1173. we gather

  1174. is a good time

  1175. to bring along

  1176. someone who doesn't

  1177. know Jesus

  1178. because they can

  1179. encounter

  1180. God's love

  1181. and grace

  1182. in our relationships

  1183. in the way

  1184. that we serve

  1185. one another

  1186. in the way

  1187. that we deal

  1188. with suffering

  1189. and difficulty

  1190. in the joy

  1191. and satisfaction

  1192. and contentment

  1193. that we know

  1194. in spite of our

  1195. circumstances

  1196. corporate worship

  1197. is fed by the

  1198. worship we do

1199. in the rest of our

  1200. week

  1201. but likewise

  1202. when we gather

  1203. and encounter

  1204. God together

  1205. it feeds the

  1206. worship that we do

1207. in the rest of the

  1208. week

  1209. loving God

  1210. and obeying God

  1211. and encountering God

  1212. and reflecting on God

  1213. and responding to God

  1214. together

  1215. helps us to keep

1216. doing that in the rest

  1217. of the week

  1218. it feeds both ways

1219. and so I want to ask you

  1220. is that where our

  1221. Sunday gathering sits

  1222. in your priorities

  1223. for the week

1224. is this 5pm time slot

  1225. an immovable object

  1226. in your diary

  1227. because you know

  1228. that there is nothing

  1229. more important

  1230. more beneficial

  1231. more joyful

  1232. that you could possibly

  1233. do with your time

  1234. or is this locked

  1235. in

  1236. unless you get

  1237. a better offer

  1238. is it immovable

  1239. except for when

  1240. there is a party

  1241. or a dinner date

  1242. or an exam

  1243. or an assignment

  1244. do you wake up

  1245. on Sunday mornings

  1246. just unable

  1247. to sleep in

  1248. because you know

1249. that today is the day

  1250. you get to gather

  1251. with God's people

  1252. and enjoy his presence

1253. or do you not really

  1254. think about it

  1255. until about 10 to 5

  1256. when you realise

  1257. you are running late

  1258. and you need to

  1259. race here quickly

  1260. because God

  1261. has designed this

  1262. to be a gift

  1263. for you

  1264. so part of our

  1265. challenge is

  1266. we come here

  1267. with our eyes

  1268. half closed

  1269. we come here

  1270. not ready

  1271. to encounter God

  1272. not willing

  1273. to hear him

  1274. as he encourages us

  1275. not willing

  1276. to see him

  1277. as he strengthens

  1278. the person

  1279. next to us

  1280. this is a gift

  1281. from God

  1282. this is an opportunity

  1283. and a blessing

  1284. especially here in Sydney

  1285. free from persecution

  1286. this Sunday gathering

  1287. this service

  1288. this community

  1289. has the potential

1290. to be more than a shot

1291. in the arm for the week

1292. this could be a life

  1293. transforming hour

  1294. for you

  1295. every Sunday night

  1296. where you encounter

  1297. the risen Jesus

  1298. have your heart

  1299. re-inflamed

  1300. to love him

  1301. and obey him

  1302. and serve him

  1303. and you go out

  1304. into the rest

  1305. of your week

  1306. just busting

  1307. to keep

  1308. loving him

  1309. and serving him

  1310. as you spend time

  1311. in your word

1312. as you go to work

  1313. as you eat

  1314. and drink

  1315. and do whatever

  1316. it is that God

  1317. gives you to do

  1318. all for his glory

  1319. today

  1320. today was really

  1321. an answer

  1322. to a whole bunch

  1323. of questions

  1324. there's still more

  1325. questions

  1326. and we've got

  1327. a couple more

  1328. weeks to go

  1329. it's not just

  1330. about where

  1331. and when

  1332. but also

  1333. why we do this

  1334. and all of it

  1335. comes back

  1336. to last week

  1337. it's all because

  1338. of who we worship

  1339. worship is all

  1340. of life

  1341. because our God

  1342. is that big

  1343. and that worthy

  1344. and this matters

  1345. because God

  1346. says this matters

  1347. because God

  1348. has made this matter

  1349. because God

  1350. has put himself

  1351. here when we gather

1352. and said this is a gift

  1353. this is an opportunity

  1354. this is a blessing

  1355. I read this morning

  1356. in Psalm 121

    Psalms 121:3

  1357. verse 3

  1358. he will not let

  1359. your foot slip

  1360. he who watches

  1361. over you

  1362. will not slumber

  1363. our God

  1364. never rests

  1365. from doing

  1366. his work

  1367. he never rests

  1368. from being perfect

  1369. and just

  1370. and glorious

  1371. and holy

  1372. and righteous

  1373. and loving us

  1374. and so he is

  1375. always

  1376. worthy

  1377. of our all

  1378. in every minute

  1379. of every day

  1380. and that same God

  1381. who never rests

  1382. reveals himself

  1383. uniquely

  1384. when we gather

  1385. in his name

  1386. so let me finish

  1387. with the words

  1388. from Corinthians

  1389. because he's worthy

  1390. whether you eat

  1391. or drink

  1392. or whatever you do

  1393. do it all

  1394. for the glory

  1395. of God

  1396. whether you work

  1397. or study

  1398. or sleep

  1399. or rest

  1400. or gather

  1401. do it all

  1402. for the glory

  1403. of God

  1404. because he's worthy

  1405. let's pray

  1406. Father God

  1407. we want to ask

  1408. that you would

  1409. protect us

  1410. from a small

  1411. vision of you

  1412. we want to ask

  1413. that you would

  1414. stop us

  1415. from containing

  1416. you into a time

  1417. or a place

  1418. or a routine

  1419. or a ritual

  1420. help us

  1421. to see you

  1422. in all of your

  1423. glory and majesty

  1424. help us

  1425. to grasp

  1426. the privilege

  1427. of knowing you

  1428. and relating to you

  1429. and worshipping you

  1430. help us

  1431. to be people

  1432. who joyfully

  1433. wake up

  1434. every day

  1435. to give

  1436. every moment

  1437. to you

  1438. to lean on you

  1439. in faith

  1440. and to trust

  1441. your goodness

  1442. help us

  1443. to be people

  1444. who delight

  1445. in gathering

  1446. as your people

  1447. help us

  1448. to come here

  1449. expectant

  1450. that you will

  1451. reveal yourself

  1452. to us

  1453. help us

  1454. to invite

  1455. boldly

  1456. knowing that

  1457. you will be

  1458. present

  1459. at the gathering

  1460. of your people

  1461. help us

  1462. to be transformed

  1463. as we meet

  1464. with you

  1465. each week

  1466. may this time

  1467. truly be

  1468. a life

  1469. shaping

  1470. hour together

  1471. may this

  1472. community

  1473. be one

  1474. that reflects

  1475. the God

  1476. that it

  1477. worships

  1478. we ask

  1479. this in your

  1480. son's name

  1481. amen
