  1. Father God, we thank you that you are a gracious God.

  2. We thank you that in your infinite wisdom,

  3. you have revealed to us what we need to know

  4. so that we may trust you

  5. and live lives that are joy-filled and strengthened by you.

  6. We ask for the ability to hear you speak today.

  7. We ask for the humility to recognise failures within ourself.

  8. And we ask for the security to be able to confess them confidently,

  9. knowing that your love is sufficient.

  10. Amen.

  11. Have you wondered why John's Gospel finishes here?

  12. It feels like it would make more sense

  13. if it finished at the end of the chapter before.

  14. Jesus has died.

  15. Jesus is risen.

  16. Jesus has told his disciples that they've got a job.

  17. He's commissioned them.

  18. So why this extra story?

  19. Why not skip to the bit where Jesus gets on a cloud

  20. and goes up to heaven and that be the end of it?

  21. Why Peter?

  22. Why here?

  23. Well, we know that Peter is a disciple, but he's not just any disciple.

  24. Peter is one of Jesus' three closest confidants.

  25. He's the one who uttered the famous declaration,

  26. you are the Christ.

  27. He's an act first, think later kind of guy,

  28. and he gets things done for Jesus.

  29. On the night of Jesus' arrest, when Jesus is explaining that all will scatter once he is arrested,

  30. Peter boldly and confidently declares,

  31. all else may fall, but I will follow you.

  32. Even if I have to die, I will follow you.

  33. Peter is so confident in his conviction,

  34. in his fortitude,

  35. in his self-discipline,

  36. to resist temptation,

  37. to endure hardship,

  38. even death,

  39. that he stands boldly declaring

  40. that his commitment and his love for Jesus

  41. is greater than any other disciple.

  42. He is so confident

  43. that he fails to heed the warning from Jesus

  44. that this very night

  45. he will deny Jesus three times.

  46. But for all his confidence,

  47. mere hours later,

  48. not once,

  49. not twice,

  50. but three times,

  51. Peter denies Jesus.

  52. And as he says it for that third time,

  53. he locks eyes with the one that he calls Saviour.

  54. And he is overcome with guilt and sorrow.

  55. Confidence that turns out to be false confidence

  56. makes our failures all the more painful.

  57. As Christians,

  58. we tend to rock back and forth in our Christian life

  59. between a sense of bravado and invincibility

  60. and at other times,

  61. a sense of crippling guilt or failure.

  62. At points in our lives

  63. where we feel like we're travelling well,

  64. resisting sin,

  65. reading our Bibles,

  66. there is this confidence.

  67. We have dealt with the issues.

  68. It's past now.

  69. We can move on to what's next.

  70. But the problem, of course,

  71. is when we stumble back into those sins

  72. that we've dealt with.

  73. Those sins that we've told God

  74. are now done and finished.

  75. How did this happen?

  76. We ask ourselves.

  77. I promised God I was done with that.

  78. The guilt can be truly suffocating.

  79. Can become a barrier

  80. in our relationship with God.

  81. Something that we try and carry ourselves

  82. because we feel like we let God down.

  83. We failed to keep our word.

  84. Remember that when we get to this episode in John,

  85. Jesus has already appeared to his disciples twice.

  86. Peter got to see him both times

  87. when Jesus met with the disciples

  88. behind closed doors.

  89. And it must have been really encouraging

  90. for Peter to hear the words from Jesus,

  91. peace be with you.

  92. But how could he forget what Peter did?

  93. Was Peter even still worthy to be called

  94. one of Jesus' followers,

  95. let alone a disciple or a leader in his church?

  96. I mean, he might have been able to push that night

  97. and his failure and his mistake

  98. to the back of his mind.

  99. But now, on this morning,

  100. on that night,

  101. he stood warming himself around a fire.

  102. On this morning,

  103. he sits at a fire with Jesus.

  104. On that night,

  105. he denied Jesus three times.

  106. On this morning,

  107. he will answer three questions.

  108. It's quite possible

  109. that the stretch of beach

  110. that they're eating breakfast on

  111. is the same stretch

  112. where Peter first met Jesus,

  113. where Peter first heard the words from Jesus,

  114. follow me.

  115. Peter.

  116. But since then,

  117. in his hour of testing,

  118. Peter has failed.

  119. Peter must have been feeling

  120. a deep sense of inadequacy

  121. as he sat there eating.

  122. There's not a lot of conversation

  123. in the passage.

  124. The disciples are almost at a loss for words.

  125. It says they know he was the Lord,

  126. but they didn't know what to say to him.

  127. Maybe Peter felt a bit like he did

  128. when he first met Jesus,

  129. when he fell to his knees and said,

  130. get away from me, Lord.

  131. I'm a sinner.

  132. Maybe that's even how you sometimes feel.

  133. Inadequate.

  134. Inadequate to resist temptation.

  135. Inadequate to point others to Jesus.

  136. Inadequate to call yourself a Christian.

  137. You know that you've failed.

  138. You know that you'll fail again.

  139. And maybe every day

  140. you have this question ringing in your mind,

  141. this uncertainty hanging over your head.

  142. Will Jesus still love me today?

  143. Even after all of these mistakes.

  144. Maybe the overarching emotion for you

  145. in the Christian life

  146. is guilt and fear

  147. rather than joy and freedom.

  148. The feeling that there is no way

  149. you can do what's required today.

  150. That even before you begin,

  151. you know you're going to fall short.

  152. But that's kind of the point, isn't it?

  153. I mean, whether you feel self-confident

  154. as a Christian,

  155. whether you're in that bravado

  156. and invincibility stage right now,

  157. or whether you sit there

  158. and just want to hide in your room

  159. and hope that nothing bad happens,

  160. wherever you are,

  161. you are inadequate.

  162. What God asks you to do is beyond you.

  163. Whether we're talking about obedience

  164. or a ministry like what Peter will embark on,

  165. you are inadequate.

  166. Peter is inadequate.

  167. And yet, Jesus chose Peter.

  168. He called him out of the fishing boat

  169. to be a disciple,

  170. to be a disciple maker.

  171. Peter's initial interaction with God

  172. made it clear that he was inadequate.

  173. Peter knew it as he fell on his knees,

  174. as he stood in the presence

  175. of his perfect saviour, Jesus.

  176. He knew he didn't belong somehow.

  177. There's no surprises here for Jesus.

  178. And the same is true of you and me.

  179. God knew what he was signing up for

  180. when he called you to follow him.

  181. Jesus died for you

  182. while you were still a sinner,

  183. not after you had sorted yourself out.

  184. And what Jesus is doing in this story

  185. is not heaping guilt on Peter.

  186. He's not harping on about his failures.

  187. He's showing him the absolute sufficiency

  188. of what he has done in his death and resurrection.

  189. See, somewhere along this journey,

  190. Peter has somehow forgotten how he started.

  191. He's begun to think that it's his responsibility

  192. to be good enough for God,

  193. to be capable enough for this ministry.

  194. He started thinking it's about his character

  195. and his commitment and his ability and his goodness.

  196. And you and I do the same thing.

  197. We hear the gospel.

  198. I'm saved by grace,

  199. by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  200. It has nothing to do with me.

  201. But then a month later,

  202. or two years later,

  203. or ten years later,

  204. we start to take responsibility for things

  205. that are not ours to carry.

  206. We start to feel this burden

  207. to have to be good enough

  208. to get God's love,

  209. to please him,

  210. to maybe deal with some of the sins

  211. we've done again

  212. that we said we wouldn't do anymore.

  213. Grace becomes our first step on our path

  214. instead of the foundation

  215. that empowers and holds up

  216. everything that we do

  217. as followers of Jesus.

  218. But the forgiveness and love

  219. offered in Jesus

  220. is unconditional.

  221. It's irreversible.

  222. There is no failure that you can do

  223. that will undo

  224. what Jesus achieves

  225. in his death and resurrection.

  226. When Jesus calls you into his family,

  227. he stamps you permanently

  228. loved,

  229. adopted,

  230. forgiven,

  231. paid for,

  232. precious,

  233. redeemed,

  234. permanently,

  235. irreversibly.

  236. It cannot be undone.

  237. And then by grace,

  238. he empowers you to do

  239. whatever it is that he needs you to do.

  240. Jesus isn't yelling at Peter.

  241. Peter.

  242. He's showing Peter something

  243. that Peter needs to be reminded of

  244. and maybe we need to be reminded of as well.

  245. Love

  246. is the only issue.

  247. Heart

  248. is the question

  249. that Jesus wants to ask Peter

  250. three times.

  251. See,

  252. you will fail

  253. if you try and be good enough for God.

  254. I can tell you that

  255. with absolute confidence.

  256. You will fail

  257. if you try and do things for God

  258. in your own strength.

  259. because apart from God,

  260. you can do nothing.

  261. Not even be a Christian,

  262. let alone be a part of his mission

  263. to transform the world

  264. with the hope of the gospel.

  265. Love

  266. is the question

  267. that Jesus takes to Peter.

  268. Not,

  269. how's your preaching going?

  270. Not,

  271. have you got a plan

  272. for church planting?

  273. Do you love me?

  274. Peter's heart

  275. is the issue here.

  276. even though Peter

  277. has failed

  278. and will fail

  279. to express that love

  280. in perfect obedience,

  281. it's the only question

  282. that Jesus asks.

  283. Peter is about

  284. to become

  285. a significant leader

  286. in the early church.

  287. He'll ultimately

  288. be crucified

  289. for his ministry.

  290. He will preach

  291. the famous

  292. Pentecost sermon

  293. which will see

  294. thousands of converts.

  295. so Jesus

  296. is using

  297. Peter's failure

  298. to remind him

  299. that if he tries

  300. to do any of this

  301. in his own strength,

  302. he will fail.

  303. But,

  304. with the power

  305. of God,

  306. all things

  307. are possible.

  308. With the power

  309. of God,

  310. a failure like Peter

  311. can be used

  312. to unleash

  313. God's ministry

  314. on the world.

  315. To unleash

  316. the life-changing

  317. hope of the gospel.

  318. Peter gets offended

  319. by the third question.

  320. He rightly

  321. protests,

  322. Jesus you know.

  323. And Jesus does know.

  324. He knows Peter's heart.

  325. He knows everything.

  326. But that's the point.

  327. These questions

  328. aren't there for Jesus

  329. just to double check.

  330. These questions

  331. are there for Peter.

  332. Jesus is graciously

  333. wiping clean

  334. the guilt for Peter

  335. from his three denials.

  336. He doesn't have to.

  337. The cross is sufficient.

  338. But this encounter

  339. is Jesus showing Peter

  340. that your failures

  341. are not the main issue.

  342. Here your heart

  343. is the main issue.

  344. You will fail.

  345. You will be inadequate.

  346. But if your heart

  347. loves me,

  348. no amount of action

  349. from Peter

  350. counts for anything

  351. if he doesn't love Jesus.

  352. And even though

  353. it's true and right

  354. to say that love

  355. will often

  356. and maybe even usually

  357. express itself

  358. in obedience,

  359. love is not made up

  360. of action.

  361. Jesus knows Peter's heart

  362. and even in his failures,

  363. Peter is held secure

  364. in the love

  365. that God has for him.

  366. This episode is essential

  367. because it makes it clear

  368. that Peter's acceptance

  369. and God's love for Peter

  370. will never be conditional

  371. on Peter's ministry

  372. or his spiritual success

  373. or his ethical success.

  374. John writes later

  375. in his letter 1 John,

  376. we love

  377. because he first loved us.

  378. The love that undercuts

  379. our love for God

  380. is his immovable,

  381. unchangeable,

  382. irreversible love

  383. shown to us

  384. in the death

  385. and resurrection

  386. of Jesus.

  387. The essential ingredient

  388. in our love for God

  389. is his love for us.

  390. Peter's inadequate love

  391. becomes adequate

  392. through the gracious

  393. transforming power

  394. of God's love for him.

  395. Hear that again.

  396. Listen and reflect

  397. and soak in this truth.

  398. God requires a love

  399. from you

  400. that you are incapable

  401. of giving

  402. and so by his

  403. unshakable

  404. and unchangeable love

  405. he empowers you

  406. to love him.

  407. Even your failures

  408. to love God

  409. are covered

  410. by the sufficient love

  411. from God.

  412. God's love triumphs

  413. over our failures.

  414. It restores us.

  415. It renews us.

  416. It redeems us.

  417. It empowers us.

  418. It reinstates us

  419. when we fail.

  420. And it gives us

  421. the strength required

  422. to do what we cannot do

  423. on our own

  424. to love and serve God.

  425. This episode

  426. is about giving Peter

  427. one last bit of preparation

  428. before he embarks

  429. on this massive task

  430. that he's faced with.

  431. He is called

  432. to feed Jesus' sheep

  433. to nourish

  434. and encourage

  435. and support

  436. a flock

  437. of new

  438. and scared

  439. Jesus followers.

  440. For him to do that

  441. he must first

  442. know himself

  443. the security

  444. and sufficiency

  445. of Jesus' love

  446. as well as

  447. his own inadequacy.

  448. Peter must

  449. be stripped

  450. of all self-confidence

  451. and be left

  452. basking

  453. and rejoicing

  454. in the adequate

  455. and overwhelming

  456. love

  457. of God.

  458. God is about

  459. to give a key job

  460. to perhaps

  461. the most spectacular

  462. failure

  463. of the disciples.

  464. Maybe

  465. barring Judas.

  466. Peter is the one

  467. who in the presence

  468. of Jesus

  469. denied his

  470. Saviour

  471. three times.

  472. this is

  473. the failure

  474. par excellence

  475. and yet

  476. the love

  477. of God

  478. washes him

  479. clean

  480. embraces him

  481. as a child

  482. and sends him

  483. out empowered

  484. to change

  485. the world.

  486. I believe

  487. it was the grace

  488. of God

  489. to Peter

  490. and to us

  491. that Peter

  492. failed so monumentally

  493. at this point

  494. in history.

  495. This episode

  496. at the end

  497. of John's Gospel

  498. isn't out of place

  499. it's perfect.

  500. Because if

  501. Jesus can

  502. and will

  503. love Peter

  504. even after

  505. this failure

  506. even after

  507. staring him

  508. in the eyes

  509. as he denied

  510. him

  511. what else

  512. is there

  513. that Peter

  514. could possibly

  515. do that's

  516. worse?

  517. There is

  518. almost no

  519. possibility

  520. for Peter

  521. now to

  522. doubt God's

  523. love.

  524. love.

  525. He has

  526. stood

  527. face to

  528. face with

  529. his

  530. saviour

  531. in his

  532. moment of

  533. failure

  534. and been

  535. re-embraced

  536. as a dearly

  537. loved child.

  538. When things

  539. seem difficult

  540. for Peter

  541. when he's

  542. discouraged

  543. when he has

  544. a big fight

  545. with the

  546. apostle Paul

  547. when he

  548. wounds

  549. some of

  550. the

  551. Gentile

  552. believers

  553. because he's

  554. reverting back

  555. to Jewish

  556. customs

  557. God loved

  558. him when

  559. he failed

  560. here so

  561. Peter will

  562. know that

  563. God's love

  564. will remain

  565. secure.

  566. That God's

  567. love will

  568. endure no

  569. matter what

  570. happens.

  571. And you

  572. and I can

  573. know too.

  574. When we

  575. stuff up

  576. when we

  577. let Jesus

  578. down when

  579. we stumble

  580. in sin

  581. when we're

  582. greedy when

  583. we're self

  584. seeking when

  585. we say a

  586. harsh word

  587. when we're

  588. dishonest

  589. God's love

  590. is bigger

  591. and more

  592. powerful than

  593. any failure

  594. that you

  595. can bring.

  596. We no

  597. longer have

  598. to worry

  599. about whether

  600. or not

  601. God's love

  602. can stand

  603. firm in

  604. the face

  605. of our

  606. failure.

  607. This side

  608. of the

  609. cross,

  610. this side

  611. of the

  612. risen Jesus

  613. we hear

  614. the words

  615. of Romans

  616. 8 echo

  617. loud.

  618. For I

  619. am convinced

  620. that neither

  621. death nor

  622. life,

  623. neither angels

  624. nor demons,

  625. neither the

  626. present nor

  627. the future

  628. nor any

  629. powers,

  630. neither height

  631. nor depth

  632. nor anything

  633. else in

  634. all creation

  635. will be able

  636. to separate

  637. us from

  638. the love

  639. of God

  640. that is in

  641. Christ Jesus

  642. our Lord.

  643. This story

  644. makes it

  645. abundantly

  646. clear that

  647. there is

  648. security

  649. in the

  650. gospel.

  651. There is

  652. security for

  653. us in

  654. the love

  655. of God

  656. even in

  657. our imperfect

  658. and at

  659. times

  660. straight up

  661. disobedient

  662. state.

  663. God's

  664. love is

  665. sufficient.

  666. God's

  667. love is

  668. secure

  669. and so

  670. there is

  671. permission

  672. for us

  673. to fail.

  674. There is

  675. permission

  676. for us

  677. to be

  678. real about

  679. who we

  680. are.

  681. Perfection

  682. and ability

  683. are not

  684. required

  685. in God's

  686. family.

  687. we do

  688. ourselves

  689. and we

  690. do each

  691. other a

  692. disservice

  693. when we

  694. pretend

  695. that we

  696. have

  697. things

  698. in

  699. hand

  700. when

  701. deep

  702. down

  703. every

  704. one

  705. of

  706. us

  707. in

  708. this

  709. room

  710. without

  711. exception

  712. is

  713. struggling

  714. with

  715. sin

  716. right

  717. now.

  718. We

  719. do

  720. ourselves

  721. and we

  722. do

  723. each

  724. other

  725. a

  726. disservice

  727. when we

  728. take

  729. credit

  730. for

  731. that

  732. which

  733. God

  734. does

  735. through

  736. us

  737. because

  738. deep

  739. down

  740. there

  741. is

  742. nothing

  743. that

  744. we

  745. can

  746. contribute

  747. apart

  748. from

  749. what

  750. God

  751. has

  752. provided

  753. for

  754. us.

  755. The

  756. joy

  757. of

  758. the

  759. gospel

  760. life

  761. the

  762. joy

  763. of

  764. the

  765. Christian

  766. community

  767. the

  768. joy

  769. of

  770. the

  771. church

  772. is

  773. that

  774. we

  775. have

  776. the

  777. joy

  778. of

  779. honest

  780. confession

  781. we

  782. don't

  783. have

  784. to

  785. pretend

  786. we

  787. are

  788. all

  789. inadequate

  790. and

  791. yet

  792. God

  793. loves

  794. us

  795. and

  796. empowers

  797. us

  798. to

  799. do

  800. what

  801. we

  802. are

  803. incapable

  804. of

  805. doing

  806. ourselves

  807. like

  808. Peter

  809. we

  810. just

  811. have

  812. to

  813. love

  814. God

  815. and

  816. lean

  817. on

  818. him

  819. when

  820. was

  821. the

  822. last

  823. time

  824. that

  825. you

  826. felt

  827. so

  828. secure

  829. in

  830. God's

  831. love

  832. that

  833. you

  834. were

  835. able

  836. to

  837. acknowledge

  838. weakness

  839. or

  840. failure

  841. to

  842. someone

  843. in

  844. this

  845. community

  846. is

  847. this

  848. a

  849. community

  850. that

  851. is

  852. safe

  853. for

  854. anyone

  855. to

  856. walk

  857. in

  858. and

  859. be

  860. transparent

  861. about

  862. who

  863. they

  864. are

  865. and

  866. their

  867. failures

  868. or

  869. are we

  870. claiming

  871. victories

  872. and

  873. confidence

  874. that's

  875. not ours

  876. to

  877. claim

  878. are we

  879. setting

  880. an

  881. expectation

  882. a

  883. standard

  884. that is

  885. not

  886. fair

  887. and

  888. not

  889. real

  890. for

  891. people

  892. who

  893. would

  894. walk

  895. in

  896. to

  897. hear

  898. the

  899. gospel

  900. of

  901. Jesus

  902. I

  903. wish

  904. that

  905. I

  906. could

  907. tell

  908. you

  909. that

  910. I'm

  911. good

  912. at

  913. this

  914. but

  915. I'm

  916. not

  917. I

  918. take

  919. far

  920. too

  921. much

  922. confidence

  923. from

  924. my

  925. ability

  926. to

  927. stand

  928. in

  929. front

  930. of

  931. a

  932. group

  933. of

  934. people

  935. and

  936. speak

  937. or

  938. to

  939. plan

  940. an

  941. event

  942. or

  943. to

  944. run

  945. a

  946. meeting

  947. and

  948. that

  949. pride

  950. in

  951. me

  952. leads

  953. me

  954. to

  955. judge

  956. what

  957. I

  958. see

  959. as

  960. weakness

  961. in

  962. those

  963. around

  964. me

  965. what

  966. that

  967. means

  968. is

  969. I'm

  970. horrified

  971. about

  972. admitting

  973. my

  974. own

  975. failures

  976. because

  977. I'm

  978. quick

  979. to

  980. jump

  981. on

  982. them

  983. and

  984. other

  985. people

  986. this

  987. story

  988. tells

  989. me

  990. God's

  991. love

  992. holds

  993. me

  994. in

  995. spite

  996. of

  997. my

  998. weakness

  999. nothing

  1000. I do

  1001. for him

  1002. or his

  1003. kingdom

  1004. is

  1005. mine

  1006. it's

  1007. his

  1008. it's

  1009. his

  1010. strength

  1011. it's

  1012. for

  1013. his

  1014. glory

  1015. and

  1016. when

  1017. I

  1018. am

  1019. too

  1020. embarrassed

  1021. to

  1022. admit

  1023. my

  1024. own

  1025. weaknesses

  1026. all

  1027. I

  1028. do

  1029. is

  1030. heap

  1031. that

  1032. pressure

  1033. onto

  1034. other

  1035. people

  1036. as

  1037. well

  1038. the

  1039. great

  1040. encouragement

  1041. from

  1042. Peter

  1043. is

  1044. he

  1045. failed

  1046. spectacularly

  1047. and

  1048. his

  1049. savior

  1050. went

  1051. back

  1052. and

  1053. had

  1054. breakfast

  1055. with

  1056. him

  1057. just

  1058. to

  1059. make

  1060. sure

  1061. he

  1062. knew

  1063. that

  1064. he

  1065. was

  1066. still

  1067. secure

  1068. in

  1069. God's

  1070. love

  1071. we

  1072. are

  1073. secure

  1074. therefore

  1075. we

  1076. are

  1077. safe

  1078. and

  1079. it

  1080. is

  1081. the

  1082. invitation

  1083. of

  1084. God

  1085. for

  1086. us

  1087. to

  1088. therefore

  1089. be

  1090. honest

  1091. for

  1092. this

  1093. to

  1094. be

  1095. a

  1096. place

  1097. where

  1098. anyone

  1099. can

  1100. walk

  1101. in

  1102. regardless

  1103. of

  1104. their

  1105. history

  1106. regardless

  1107. of

  1108. their

  1109. mistakes

  1110. and

  1111. know

  1112. that

  1113. in

  1114. Jesus

  1115. there

  1116. is

  1117. a

  1118. love

  1119. that

  1120. is

  1121. bigger

  1122. and

  1123. stronger

  1124. than

  1125. any

  1126. of

  1127. that

  1128. the

  1129. other

  1130. grace

  1131. here

  1132. in

  1133. this

  1134. story

  1135. is

  1136. that

  1137. God

  1138. shows

  1139. us

  1140. the

  1141. danger

  1142. and

  1143. the

  1144. hopelessness

  1145. of

  1146. fighting

  1147. in

  1148. our

  1149. own

  1150. strength

  1151. Peter

  1152. has

  1153. shown

  1154. that

  1155. humanly

  1156. speaking

  1157. he

  1158. has

  1159. nothing

  1160. to

  1161. offer

  1162. if

  1163. Jesus

  1164. leaves

  1165. this

  1166. to

  1167. Peter's

  1168. ability

  1169. and

  1170. his

  1171. conviction

  1172. and

  1173. his

  1174. fortitude

  1175. then

  1176. we're

  1177. going

  1178. to

  1179. just

  1180. get

  1181. more

  1182. denial

  1183. episodes

  1184. in

  1185. spite

  1186. of

  1187. Peter's

  1188. enthusiasm

  1189. and

  1190. confidence

  1191. and

  1192. bravado

  1193. unless

  1194. God

  1195. works

  1196. through

  1197. him

  1198. it'll

  1199. count

  1200. for

  1201. nothing

  1202. Peter

  1203. and

  1204. we

  1205. are

  1206. drawn

  1207. by this

  1208. encounter

  1209. to be

  1210. people

  1211. who pray

  1212. first

  1213. and act

  1214. second

  1215. people who

  1216. depend on

  1217. God

  1218. who

  1219. recognize

  1220. that we

  1221. need

  1222. God

  1223. and then

  1224. empowered

  1225. by him

  1226. can go

  1227. out

  1228. head

  1229. strong

  1230. and

  1231. confident

  1232. in the

  1233. work that

  1234. God can

  1235. and will

  1236. do

  1237. through

  1238. us

  1239. the

  1240. grace

  1241. of God

  1242. is that

  1243. you are

  1244. not

  1245. required

  1246. to have

  1247. the

  1248. ability

  1249. to do

  1250. what

  1251. God

  1252. wants

  1253. you

  1254. to do

  1255. you're

  1256. simply

  1257. required

  1258. to ask

  1259. him

  1260. for the

  1261. ability

  1262. and the

  1263. strength

  1264. everybody

  1265. knows

  1266. about

  1267. Peter's

  1268. failure

  1269. he has

  1270. a reputation

  1271. as the

  1272. disciple

  1273. that

  1274. denied

  1275. but what

  1276. that does

  1277. is help

  1278. him

  1279. come to

  1280. God

  1281. empty

  1282. handed

  1283. and ready

  1284. to be

  1285. used

  1286. we've got

  1287. to try

  1288. and understand

  1289. what the

  1290. disciples

  1291. were going

  1292. through

  1293. at the

  1294. end of

  1295. the

  1296. gospel

  1297. even

  1298. though

  1299. Jesus

  1300. told

  1301. them

  1302. what

  1303. would

  1304. happen

  1305. the

  1306. resurrection

  1307. took

  1308. them

  1309. completely

  1310. by

  1311. surprise

  1312. and so

  1313. these

  1314. men

  1315. are

  1316. scrambling

  1317. to

  1318. process

  1319. everything

  1320. that

  1321. Jesus

  1322. has

  1323. said

  1324. to

  1325. them

  1326. in

  1327. the

  1328. last

  1329. three

  1330. years

  1331. about

  1332. who

  1333. he

  1334. is

  1335. about

  1336. what

  1337. it

  1338. means

  1339. to

  1340. follow

  1341. him

  1342. about

  1343. the

  1344. mission

  1345. that

  1346. he's

  1347. just

  1348. given

  1349. them

  1350. and

  1351. the

  1352. life

  1353. of

  1354. a

  1355. Christian

  1356. is

  1357. starting

  1358. to

  1359. take

  1360. on

  1361. fresh

  1362. clarity

  1363. for

  1364. the

  1365. disciples

  1366. yes

  1367. they

  1368. will

  1369. be

  1370. world

  1371. changers

  1372. yes

  1373. they

  1374. will

  1375. be

  1376. leaders

  1377. among

  1378. God's

  1379. people

  1380. yes

  1381. they

  1382. will

  1383. care

  1384. for

  1385. the

  1386. poor

  1387. they

  1388. will

  1389. be

  1390. self

  1391. sacrificial

  1392. they

  1393. will

  1394. put

  1395. others

  1396. first

  1397. many

  1398. of

  1399. them

  1400. will

  1401. die

  1402. for

  1403. this

  1404. cause

  1405. but

  1406. it

  1407. is

  1408. only

  1409. by

  1410. God's

  1411. grace

  1412. and

  1413. the

  1414. provision

  1415. of

  1416. his

  1417. strength

  1418. and

  1419. his

  1420. patient

  1421. love

  1422. for

  1423. them

  1424. that

  1425. they

  1426. can

  1427. offer

  1428. anything

  1429. even

  1430. the

  1431. breakfast

  1432. that

  1433. they're

  1434. eating

  1435. with

  1436. Jesus

  1437. in

  1438. this

  1439. story

  1440. is

  1441. kind

  1442. of

  1443. a

  1444. snapshot

  1445. of

  1446. the

  1447. Christian

  1448. life

  1449. Jesus

  1450. provides

  1451. them

  1452. with

  1453. a

  1454. miraculous

  1455. catch

  1456. of

  1457. fish

  1458. by

  1459. the

  1460. time

  1461. they

  1462. get

  1463. to

  1464. the

  1465. beach

  1466. Jesus

  1467. already

  1468. has

  1469. the

  1470. fire

  1471. going

  1472. there's

  1473. already

  1474. fish

  1475. cooking

  1476. there's

  1477. already

  1478. bread

  1479. ready

  1480. to

  1481. go

  1482. and

  1483. yet

  1484. he

  1485. still

  1486. says

  1487. this

  1488. in

  1489. verse

  1490. 10

  1491. bring

  1492. some

  1493. of

  1494. the

  1495. fish
