  1. Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho. Joshua fought the battle of Jericho

  2. and the walls came a-tumbling down. You may talk about your men of Gideon, you may talk about the

  3. men of Saul, but there's none like good old Joshua at the battle of Jericho. He was certainly there.

  4. It's a well-known African-American song. It's a great song and it's a fun children's song and

  5. you'll probably go out of here singing it tonight. So bad luck, there you go. But the problem is when

  6. you get to Joshua 6 and you read about the destruction of Jericho, you soon realise that

  7. Joshua 6 does not give Joshua the glory for this battle and for this victory. It lies very much

  8. in the Lord's hands and that's what we're going to see as we go through this message tonight.

  9. The scene is set at the end of Joshua 5, which we didn't read. We read a few weeks ago.

  10. There's a vision. So I hope you've got your Bibles open. If you're looking at the end of Joshua 5 and

  11. into Joshua 6, that's where I'm speaking from, the commander of the Lord's armies appears

  12. to Joshua and a sword is in his hand and he looks really intimidating. He's ready for a fight,

  13. but so is Joshua. And Joshua asks him a really bold question. Whose side are you on? Us or our enemies?

  14. And God's answer to him is neither.

  15. Yahweh, the Lord God, has a message for you. Get your shoes off. You're standing in a holy place.

  16. It's a holy place because he's in the presence of God and Joshua is having something like the same

  17. experience that the former leader Moses had had when he encountered God at the burning bush.

  18. Get your feet off. Get your sandals off. This is holy ground to be standing in my presence.

  19. And you see here that God is holy and he demands our respect whether you believe in him or not.

  20. He doesn't play favourites. Everybody's accountable to him.

  21. God's people are about to completely devastate St. Jericho.

  22. So the end of the story, you get, this is the end of the story. I'm going to give it to you right now.

  23. Verse 24. They burned the whole city and everything in it and they put the silver and the gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord's house.

  24. And what we read is a story where women and boys and girls and animals are completely obliterated by the people of God.

  25. So think for a moment and feel the severity of what is going on here.

  26. Australians go to war against nations who do such things.

  27. At the moment we have troops fighting in Iraq against ISIS.

  28. We participate in the United Nations humanitarian missions to protect vulnerable people groups who are attacked by other nations that have genocidal intentions.

  29. We fight about these things.

  30. And here we have it in the Old Testament part of the Bible.

  31. How do we reconcile God being behind a genocide?

  32. I had a conversation with somebody earlier in the day and they were talking to somebody after one of the services this morning.

  33. And the way they dealt with it is to say we don't want to know too much about the Old Testament because it's a different God in the Old Testament to the God that we encounter in the New Testament.

  34. And that is absolutely not true.

  35. Back in Genesis, God made promises to Abraham.

  36. In Genesis 15, as the sun was setting, Abraham fell into a deep sleep and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.

  37. And then the Lord said to him,

  38. Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own,

  39. and they will be enslaved and they'll be mistreated for 400 years.

  40. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,

  41. and afterwards they will come out with great possessions.

  42. You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.

  43. But in the fourth generation, your descendants will come back here.

  44. For the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.

  45. The sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.

  46. And so you start to see that this is not about genocide,

  47. and it's not about favouritism.

  48. This is about the judgment of God who doesn't play favourites.

  49. The time has come for the Amorite citizens of Jericho to be judged for their rejection of God.

  50. God has been patient and forbearing for hundreds of years,

  51. and time is now up and his judgment is about to fall on them.

  52. Now if you think that's unfair,

  53. then we could look further ahead in the Bible

  54. and see that God would later do the same thing with his own people.

  55. He will send them into exile from the Promised Land

  56. because God does not play favourites.

  57. So the commander of the Lord's army

  58. is both a comfort and a warning to Joshua.

  59. Comfort in that God is leading them to what will be

  60. a heartening, breathtaking victory,

  61. but a warning in that God is king.

  62. He doesn't play favourites.

  63. If the people of God turn away from him,

  64. there will be no special pleading.

  65. We will all come under his judgment.

  66. So the commander brings this message of great reassurance.

  67. Verse 2, chapter 6.

  68. See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands

  69. along with its king and its fighting men.

  70. The Lord will win the battle of Jericho.

  71. He is holy.

  72. He is the sovereign king.

  73. Joshua is about to participate in God's victory.

  74. And so the really important question is not what Joshua asked,

  75. which is, whose side are you on God?

  76. He is Lord and God and king.

  77. He doesn't answer to us.

  78. We are accountable to him.

  79. And so the question is,

  80. are we giving ourselves to his purposes?

  81. Are we on his side?

  82. Are we on his side?

  83. Do we care and participate in his mission

  84. to bring men and women and boys and girls into his kingdom

  85. to live for Christ as the redeemed people of God in the world,

  86. which is what he calls us to be?

  87. The last words of Jesus to his disciples at the end of Matthew,

  88. are going to all the world and make disciples of all nations,

  89. baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son

  90. and of the Holy Spirit.

  91. And lo, I am with you always until the very end of the age.

  92. We have been given a very clear mission from God.

  93. And wind the clock back 1,400 years to Joshua,

  94. he is being given a very clear mission by God

  95. to enter and conquer the land,

  96. to lead the people of God into the place

  97. where they can live and enjoy life as his people,

  98. to begin to enjoy his salvation.

  99. St. Paul's vision is to know,

  100. to treasure and to represent Jesus.

  101. And in a way, it's an expression of Matthew 28.

  102. It reminds us that we are saved for a purpose

  103. and God graciously saves us

  104. and allows us to participate in his work in this world.

  105. So for the Israelites, Joshua 6,

  106. the current mission is Jericho.

  107. It's mission impossible.

  108. It's fortress Jericho.

  109. The city's closed up.

  110. The mighty walls seem impenetrable.

  111. And from a human point of view,

  112. this is just impossible.

  113. But the Lord speaks to Joshua

  114. and reassures him saying,

  115. verse 2,

  116. I have delivered Jericho into your hands

  117. along with its king and its fighting men.

  118. And so God gives,

  119. right through the early chapters of Joshua,

  120. he's giving Joshua reassurance after reassurance

  121. as they step into this fearsome land,

  122. into this land of the giants.

  123. And as they come into the land

  124. and as they begin to participate

  125. in the first fight to take control,

  126. this first victory will be the Lord's.

  127. So the verse of our series,

  128. Joshua chapter 1, verse 9,

    Joshua 1:9

  129. God's been preparing him.

  130. Have I not commanded you?

  131. Be strong and courageous.

  132. Do not be terrified.

  133. Do not be discouraged.

  134. For the Lord your God

  135. will be with you wherever you go.

  136. And then in chapter 2,

  137. Rahab's revelation,

  138. which was there to encourage the spies,

  139. I know that the Lord has given this land to you

  140. and that a great fear of you has fallen on us

  141. so that all who live in this country

  142. are melting in fear because of you.

  143. When we heard of it,

  144. our hearts melted

  145. and everyone's courage failed because of you.

  146. For the Lord your God

  147. is God in heaven above

  148. and on the earth below.

  149. So three words of encouragement,

  150. I have delivered Jericho into your hands,

  151. I am with you

  152. and your enemies there melting in fear.

  153. And then God asked Joshua to do something

  154. that seems completely ridiculous.

  155. Parade around the city.

  156. Ark of God out front,

  157. priests blowing trumpets,

  158. do it every day for six days

  159. with all the fighting men,

  160. maybe 600,000 men following behind,

  161. walk in absolute silence

  162. and then on the seventh day,

  163. wear yourselves out,

  164. do it seven times

  165. and wait for my command

  166. and when I say shout,

  167. you shout!

  168. It's a religious parade.

  169. It's like an Anzac Day march, you know.

  170. Thousands of soldiers

  171. and no tools

  172. to be able to breach the city's impregnable walls.

  173. I'm an engineer by background

  174. and I went looking for

  175. the biggest bulldozer in the world the other day

  176. because I wanted a way

  177. to knock down the walls of Jericho

  178. because it could have brought my engineering to be.

  179. Komatsu 575,

  180. they use them in northwest Australia.

  181. Really big

  182. and they can push 45 cubic metres

  183. which is about 100 tonnes of earth

  184. at one time.

  185. And one of those I reckon

  186. would have gone through Jericho's walls

  187. in about 30 minutes.

  188. But Joshua didn't have tools

  189. or capacity like that.

  190. Some of the children's Bibles

  191. and I'm not sure we didn't see it on the screen

  192. a minute ago

  193. showed that the people of Jericho

  194. mocking them as they march.

  195. But the Bible doesn't say that.

  196. 600,000 men

  197. marching around the city

  198. six days in a row

  199. in absolute silence

  200. I think would have brought

  201. a sense of fear

  202. and foreboding

  203. to the people

  204. who were behind the walls.

  205. Rahab has already told the spies

  206. that

  207. the hearts

  208. of the people

  209. in the city

  210. were melting

  211. with fear.

  212. So the Ark of the Covenant

  213. is out the front

  214. of this parade

  215. the symbol of God's presence

  216. he had led them

  217. right through the desert

  218. and the priests

  219. a week or two before

  220. had stepped into the Jordan River

  221. in flood

  222. put their feet

  223. into the water

  224. with the river flooding

  225. and God just stopped the river

  226. and the whole nation

  227. walked across

  228. on dry land

  229. into the promised land.

  230. And rather ominously

  231. the Ark of God

  232. is front

  233. centre

  234. out the front again

  235. at Jericho.

  236. So verse 20

  237. when this trumpet

  238. sounded

  239. the people shouted

  240. and at the sound

  241. of the trumpet

  242. and when the people

  243. gave a loud shout

  244. the wall collapsed

  245. so that every man

  246. charged straight in

  247. and they took the city.

  248. God destroyed

  249. an impenetrable

  250. fortress.

  251. They didn't breach

  252. the wall

  253. God did.

  254. It was his victory

  255. he did everything

  256. the people

  257. had the joy

  258. of participating

  259. in the victory

  260. that God

  261. had won

  262. and all glory

  263. to him.

  264. Huge echoes

  265. of this type

  266. of thing

  267. in the New Testament

  268. I'm just going to one

  269. but we could go

  270. to other ones

  271. Ephesians 2

  272. very succinctly

  273. says

  274. it is by grace

  275. you have been saved

  276. through faith

  277. and this not

  278. from yourselves

  279. it's the gift

  280. of God

  281. not by works

  282. so that no one

  283. can boast

  284. for we are

  285. God's workmanship

  286. created in Christ

  287. Jesus

  288. to do good works

  289. which God

  290. prepared in advance

  291. for us to do.

  292. So the cross

  293. of Christ

  294. is all God's

  295. work

  296. it's his

  297. initiative

  298. it's his

  299. kindness

  300. it's his

  301. mercy

  302. it's his

  303. grace

  304. he has

  305. destroyed

  306. the wall

  307. of human

  308. sin

  309. that separates

  310. us from

  311. the love

  312. and the mercy

  313. of God

  314. that stops

  315. us seeing

  316. God for who

  317. he really

  318. is

  319. is

  320. and quite

  321. remarkably

  322. he brings

  323. us

  324. to a

  325. completely

  326. new life

  327. where we

  328. can live

  329. for Christ

  330. and enjoy

  331. him forever

  332. he allows

  333. us to do

  334. his good

  335. work

  336. so this

  337. whole passage

  338. is about

  339. God's glory

  340. it is about

  341. who he is

  342. and you see

  343. that in chapter

  344. 6 verses

  345. 17 to 19

  346. the city

  347. and all

  348. that are in

  349. it are to

  350. be devoted

  351. to the

  352. Lord

  353. only Rahab

  354. the prostitute

  355. and all

  356. who are with

  357. her in her

  358. house shall

  359. be spared

  360. because she

  361. hid the

  362. spies

  363. we sent

  364. but keep

  365. away from

  366. the devoted

  367. things so

  368. that you

  369. will not

  370. bring about

  371. your own

  372. destruction

  373. by taking

  374. any of

  375. them

  376. otherwise

  377. you will

  378. make the

  379. camp of

  380. Israel

  381. liable to

  382. destruction

  383. and bring

  384. trouble

  385. on it

  386. all the

  387. silver and

  388. the gold

  389. and the

  390. articles of

  391. bronze and

  392. iron are

  393. sacred to

  394. the Lord

  395. and must

  396. go into

  397. his treasury

  398. and then in

  399. verse 21

  400. they devoted

  401. the city to

  402. the Lord

  403. and they

  404. destroyed

  405. with the

  406. sword

  407. every living

  408. thing in

  409. it

  410. men and

  411. women

  412. young and

  413. old

  414. cattle

  415. sheep

  416. and

  417. donkeys

  418. it's the

  419. moral dilemma

  420. again

  421. it's a

  422. very strange

  423. expression

  424. everything

  425. was devoted

  426. to God

  427. that meant

  428. that every

  429. living thing

  430. was killed

  431. men

  432. women

  433. children

  434. infants

  435. animals

  436. and all

  437. the precious

  438. metal from

  439. the city

  440. into the

  441. treasury

  442. for the

  443. future

  444. building

  445. of a

  446. temple

  447. to God

  448. no

  449. person

  450. would

  451. share in

  452. the spoils

  453. of this

  454. victory

  455. to the

  456. victor

  457. would go

  458. the spoils

  459. this is

  460. the Lord's

  461. victory

  462. and so

  463. all honour

  464. and glory

  465. and praise

  466. to him

  467. because he

  468. is the

  469. unbeatable

  470. foe

  471. now if you

  472. don't have

  473. some moral

  474. discomfort

  475. about this

  476. event

  477. it means

  478. you're really

  479. well taught

  480. or a bit

  481. numb to

  482. something that

  483. you should

  484. have some

  485. feeling about

  486. the

  487. wholesale

  488. slaughter

  489. of a

  490. city

  491. and all

  492. its

  493. people

  494. does not

  495. sit

  496. comfortably

  497. and yet

  498. throughout

  499. the Bible

  500. salvation

  501. and

  502. judgment

  503. always go

  504. hand in

  505. hand

  506. salvation

  507. or rescue

  508. only means

  509. something

  510. when you

  511. understand

  512. what you

  513. have been

  514. rescued

  515. from

  516. and what

  517. you have

  518. been

  519. brought

  520. to

  521. and you

  522. see that

  523. in Joshua

  524. 6

  525. in the

  526. face of

  527. God's

  528. judgment

  529. there is

  530. great

  531. mercy

  532. one person

  533. and her

  534. family are

  535. saved

  536. Rahab

  537. the

  538. prostitute

  539. a person

  540. that most

  541. would have

  542. judged as

  543. unworthy

  544. she wasn't

  545. the one

  546. you would

  547. have picked

  548. if you

  549. were lining

  550. up to

  551. find the

  552. one citizen

  553. of Jericho

  554. that we

  555. will save

  556. the woman

  557. of faith

  558. who saw

  559. the hand

  560. of God

  561. at work

  562. who in

  563. chapter 2

  564. had said

  565. to the

  566. spies

  567. the Lord

  568. your God

  569. is God

  570. in heaven

  571. above

  572. and on

  573. the earth

  574. beneath

  575. now then

  576. please

  577. swear to

  578. me

  579. by the

  580. Lord

  581. that you

  582. will

  583. show

  584. kindness

  585. to my

  586. family

  587. because I

  588. have shown

  589. kindness

  590. to you

  591. give me

  592. a sure

  593. sign

  594. that you

  595. will spare

  596. the lives

  597. of my

  598. father

  599. and mother

  600. and my

  601. brothers

  602. and sisters

  603. and all

  604. who belong

  605. to them

  606. that you

  607. will save

  608. us from

  609. death

  610. she

  611. recognised

  612. God

  613. for who

  614. he was

  615. she seized

  616. the moment

  617. she pleaded

  618. for her

  619. safety

  620. and when

  621. the day

  622. of judgment

  623. came

  624. she was

  625. absolutely

  626. safe

  627. one

  628. family

  629. safe

  630. from the

  631. judgment

  632. of God

  633. out of

  634. all the

  635. families

  636. of Jericho

  637. that's

  638. echoed in

  639. other places

  640. in the

  641. Bible

  642. when you

  643. see Abraham

  644. pleading

  645. with God

  646. over the

  647. cities

  648. of Sodom

  649. and Gomorrah

  650. you can't

  651. get much

  652. lower than

  653. Sodom

  654. and Gomorrah

  655. but Abraham

  656. was pleading

  657. that God

  658. wouldn't

  659. destroy

  660. these cities

  661. and in

  662. destroying

  663. the cities

  664. maybe sweep

  665. up some

  666. righteous

  667. people

  668. who didn't

  669. deserve

  670. to die

  671. so he

  672. said if

  673. there's 50

  674. people there

  675. will you

  676. save the

  677. city

  678. yes I'll

  679. save it

  680. 40 people

  681. will you

  682. save the

  683. city

  684. yes I'll

  685. save it

  686. 30 people

  687. will you

  688. save the

  689. city

  690. yes I'll

  691. save it

  692. 20 people

  693. Lord please

  694. forgive me for

  695. asking one

  696. more time

  697. but if there's

  698. 10 people in

  699. those cities

  700. will you spare

  701. those cities

  702. and God says

  703. I'll spare

  704. them

  705. but in

  706. in the end

  707. only lot

  708. and two

  709. daughters

  710. walked out

  711. of those

  712. cities

  713. and were

  714. saved

  715. from all

  716. the

  717. inhabitants

  718. of Sodom

  719. and Gomorrah

  720. in Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  721. chapter 7

  722. the Lord

  723. Jesus himself

  724. said

  725. for wide

  726. is the

  727. gate

  728. and broad

  729. is the

  730. road

  731. that leads

  732. to destruction

  733. and many

  734. enter through

  735. it

  736. but small

  737. is the

  738. gate

  739. and narrow

  740. the road

  741. that leads

  742. to life

  743. and only a

  744. few

  745. find it

  746. so the

  747. truth of

  748. the matter

  749. is that

  750. none of

  751. us deserves

  752. to escape

  753. God's

  754. judgment

  755. it is

  756. only by

  757. his

  758. mercy

  759. lots

  760. and lots

  761. of people

  762. in the

  763. world

  764. and around

  765. us

  766. and even

  767. within us

  768. here tonight

  769. have heard

  770. about God's

  771. great news

  772. about the

  773. Lord Jesus

  774. Christ

  775. and they

  776. have chosen

  777. to reject

  778. it

  779. or put

  780. it to

  781. side

  782. and to

  783. ignore it

  784. for the

  785. time being

  786. whatever it

  787. is

  788. but there

  789. is not

  790. another

  791. route

  792. I was

  793. talking to

  794. one of

  795. my friends

  796. recently

  797. he has

  798. a dad

  799. whose

  800. idea of

  801. helping

  802. my friend

  803. his son

  804. to become

  805. a man

  806. when he

  807. was on

  808. the threshold

  809. of adulthood

  810. his dad

  811. brought him

  812. from the

  813. country

  814. brought him

  815. to the

  816. city

  817. took him

  818. to

  819. King's

  820. Cross

  821. paid

  822. for the

  823. strip shows

  824. and the

  825. sex

  826. that was

  827. how he

  828. formed

  829. his boy

  830. and that

  831. is the

  832. baggage

  833. that my

  834. friend

  835. carries

  836. God

  837. in his

  838. mercy

  839. brought

  840. my

  841. friend

  842. to

  843. Christ

  844. even

  845. with

  846. his

  847. distorted

  848. attitudes

  849. to

  850. sex

  851. he

  852. saved

  853. him

  854. from

  855. his

  856. old

  857. life

  858. he

  859. brought

  860. him

  861. to

  862. something

  863. new

  864. his

  865. dad

  866. still

  867. is

  868. a

  869. cranky

  870. old

  871. selfish

  872. self

  873. self

  874. selfish

  875. sex

  876. obsessed

  877. man

  878. he's

  879. bitter

  880. he's

  881. divisive

  882. to his

  883. children

  884. he's

  885. heard

  886. about

  887. Jesus

  888. and he

  889. refuses

  890. to turn

  891. to him

  892. he is

  893. like a

  894. pig

  895. rolling

  896. in its

  897. own

  898. filth

  899. he

  900. refuses

  901. to reach

  902. out to

  903. the one

  904. who would

  905. rescue

  906. him

  907. and who

  908. would

  909. make

  910. him

  911. clean

  912. but if

  913. he keeps

  914. saying

  915. no to

  916. Jesus

  917. he is

  918. effectively

  919. saying yes

  920. to the

  921. judgment

  922. of God

  923. bring it

  924. on

  925. my

  926. friend

  927. lives

  928. with

  929. grief

  930. and

  931. distress

  932. in his

  933. extended

  934. family

  935. it's

  936. not a

  937. happy

  938. place

  939. but

  940. what a

  941. blessing

  942. that he

  943. has been

  944. brought

  945. to new

  946. life

  947. in his

  948. own

  949. family

  950. the

  951. Lord

  952. Jesus

  953. has been

  954. extremely

  955. gracious

  956. to him

  957. despite

  958. his

  959. brokenness

  960. and sin

  961. he's

  962. been

  963. able to

  964. make

  965. a new

  966. life

  967. with

  968. Christ

  969. walking

  970. away

  971. from

  972. the

  973. darkness

  974. of

  975. the

  976. life

  977. that

  978. his

  979. earthly

  980. father

  981. inducted

  982. him

  983. into

  984. friends

  985. we

  986. haven't

  987. just

  988. been

  989. saved

  990. for

  991. eternity

  992. the

  993. grace

  994. and the

  995. mercy

  996. and the

  997. kindness

  998. of God

  999. means

  1000. that we

  1001. have been

  1002. permitted

  1003. to begin

  1004. a

  1005. completely

  1006. new

  1007. life

  1008. with

  1009. him

  1010. now

  1011. Rahab

  1012. was

  1013. saved

  1014. from

  1015. terrible

  1016. judgment

  1017. she

  1018. was set

  1019. free

  1020. to begin

  1021. again

  1022. she

  1023. was given

  1024. a place

  1025. amongst

  1026. the

  1027. people

  1028. of

  1029. God

  1030. and

  1031. despite

  1032. the

  1033. scandal

  1034. of her

  1035. former

  1036. life

  1037. she

  1038. would

  1039. later

  1040. be

  1041. honored

  1042. as

  1043. a

  1044. woman

  1045. of

  1046. faith

  1047. who

  1048. took

  1049. her

  1050. chance

  1051. and

  1052. reached

  1053. out

  1054. and

  1055. she

  1056. grabbed

  1057. the

  1058. salvation

  1059. that

  1060. God

  1061. offered

  1062. her

  1063. she

  1064. was

  1065. God's

  1066. workmanship

  1067. recreated

  1068. and now

  1069. enabled

  1070. to do

  1071. the

  1072. good

  1073. works

  1074. that

  1075. God

  1076. had

  1077. for

  1078. her

  1079. to

  1080. do

  1081. so

  1082. what a

  1083. hope

  1084. we have

  1085. in

  1086. Christ

  1087. doesn't

  1088. matter

  1089. what

  1090. you've

  1091. done

  1092. or

  1093. what

  1094. you've

  1095. become

  1096. it

  1097. is

  1098. not

  1099. too

  1100. late

  1101. to

  1102. turn

  1103. to

  1104. Christ

  1105. to

  1106. receive

  1107. his

  1108. cleansing

  1109. forgiveness

  1110. to

  1111. begin

  1112. a

  1113. brand

  1114. new

  1115. life

  1116. doing

  1117. the

  1118. good

  1119. things

  1120. that

  1121. he

  1122. has

  1123. prepared

  1124. in

  1125. advance

  1126. for

  1127. you

  1128. to

  1129. do

  1130. Amen

  1131. for

  1132. use

  1133. of

  1134. I

  1135. I

  1136. mean
