  1. Good morning, my name is Sam and I'm on the ministry team here at St Paul's.

  2. Let me also endorse James' plug for his small group.

  3. He's a good leader and if you've never been in a small group,

  4. Sunday afternoons would be a good one to be a part of.

  5. But let me pray and then we're going to open up that passage that was read for us

  6. and another one in John as well.

  7. Father God, we do thank you for the chance to gather this morning.

  8. We thank you for the chance to open your word and reflect on what it means to love.

  9. God, we ask that you would enable us to recognise in ourselves

  10. definitions that we've held to that are not consistent with you,

  11. maybe practices that we have gotten in the habit of

  12. that don't reflect who you are and what you've done.

  13. I pray that this morning the result of us gathering like this would be

  14. that our hearts are transformed, our minds are renewed

  15. and we are equipped by your spirit to live lives of love.

  16. Amen.

  17. It may come as a surprise to you, it may come as a surprise to my wife,

  18. but once upon a time I was a hopeless romantic.

  19. As a teenager, there's no need to giggle,

  20. as a teenager I loved watching romantic movies.

  21. I loved soppy love stories.

  22. I would get very emotional in dramas and that sort of thing.

  23. I didn't mind crying when, you know, the pet died or whatever it was.

  24. I just, I had this very fanciful version of what I figured my romantic future would be.

  25. I was, I would never tell anyone this at the time,

  26. but as a 16-year-old I would dream about being, you know,

  27. the male hero in the classic drama, rescuing the damsel in distress.

  28. It's very strange.

  29. But that's kind of what I got fed that love was supposed to look like.

  30. My family was a little bit dysfunctional.

  31. I've shared with you a bit before.

  32. I won't go into it too much right now.

  33. But my parents separated when I was 14.

  34. And even before that, my dad travelled a lot.

  35. So I didn't really have a picture of what love might look like in a family.

  36. What, you know, kind of real love looked like when you had to deal with five kids

  37. and some of those kids being unhelpful and disobedient and that sort of stuff.

  38. So the only picture I had was what I saw in movies like Love Actually.

  39. And other equally helpful love stories.

  40. But the reality is that I'm probably not alone in this.

  41. You might not have a romantic definition of what love is like,

  42. but trying to work out what love is supposed to be is actually kind of difficult.

  43. When you listen to the voices around you that are telling you what it's supposed to look like,

  44. whether it's what you saw modelled in your own mother and father,

  45. whether it's movies, whether it's books, whether it's media, whether it's whatever,

  46. it is actually difficult for us to pin down what love should be.

  47. And so imagine the challenge when we as followers of Jesus are called to this extreme countercultural love,

  48. this love that loves enemies.

  49. Imagine how much trouble we would have actually figuring out what that looks like.

  50. And so often we find ourselves qualifying the commands to love that we find in Scripture.

  51. One of the great maxims that you hear around churches is,

  52. I have to love my enemies, but I don't have to like them.

  53. Now, I'm not going to go into whether that's right or wrong,

  54. but isn't it interesting that we like to qualify some of the really difficult instructions

  55. when it comes to the love that God has called us to?

  56. But the good news is we're actually not required to guess what love is like.

  57. We're not actually required to try and come up with our own path for how we might love.

  58. We've been given a model and his name is Jesus.

  59. We are called to love like Jesus.

  60. We are called to emulate the love that he models for us, the pattern that he sets out.

  61. And in God's word, we see picture after picture of what that love is in different circumstances,

  62. in different situations, with different people.

  63. We're dropping into John's gospel today, and John's gospel can kind of be chopped in half.

  64. The first half is sometimes known as the book of Psalms,

  65. where Jesus is doing lots of things to prove who he is.

  66. And in this second half, which starts in John 13,

  67. it's almost like the story slows down.

  68. So the first three years almost in entirety are in the first 12 chapters.

  69. And then this last bit, everything slows down.

  70. And there's a sentence in John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  71. If you've got John 15 open, turn back one page,

  72. because this sentence at the beginning of John 13 is very important.

  73. Verse 1, it says,

  74. It was just before the Passover feast.

  75. So this is the video that we watched with the kids.

  76. We're about to slow down in Jesus' life in the second half of John's gospel.

  77. He's about to really make it clear what his love looks like,

  78. because very shortly he's going to utter the very significant words,

  79. as I have loved you, so you must love one another.

  80. This back end of John's gospel is focused in on what Jesus' love looks like.

  81. It is focused in on a very brief period in Jesus' life.

  82. Even though love has been on display the whole way through,

  83. what Jesus is focusing on now is the ultimate expression,

  84. the full extent of his love.

  85. And so I want to look with you today at two scenes in particular.

  86. And the first one is chapter 13.

    Isaiah 13 chapter mention

  87. It's the video that we watched.

  88. The time has come to show his love fully.

  89. A couple of months ago, Bailey, who is my son, he's three and a bit,

  90. developed some tinea on his toe.

  91. I think that's disgusting.

  92. Just telling you.

  93. But as a dad, I don't get to choose what I do with that.

  94. I've got to look after him.

  95. And so we had a nightly routine that involved me putting on a rubber glove

  96. to make sure that I didn't touch that disgusting fungus,

  97. getting some antifungal cream and rubbing it on his toes,

  98. which he called tickling.

  99. And so he would be helpful and flick around and put cream everywhere.

  100. But I found it kind of gross.

  101. It's not really the kind of job you want,

  102. but it's one of the jobs that you have to do as a dad.

  103. In John 13, we see Jesus doing a job that probably would make some of us

  104. feel kind of similar.

  105. Maybe a little bit squeamish, a little bit grossed out,

  106. a little bit uncomfortable.

  107. I mean, I think that the cartoon on the screen depicted it quite well.

  108. There would have been animal poo on their feet.

  109. Who knows what else?

  110. And so it's not really a job that the disciples were queuing up to do.

  111. You didn't see any of them tripping over themselves to be the most servant-hearted.

  112. And so instead, Jesus gets up and models something for them,

  113. demonstrates something for them.

  114. And so in the story, you see Jesus on his knees,

  115. humbly washing their feet.

  116. Their teacher, their leader, the one they're following,

  117. assuming the lowly position and washing their feet.

  118. And listen to what he says as he finishes in verse 12 of chapter 13.

  119. When he had finished washing their feet,

  120. he put on his clothes and returned to his place.

  121. You can almost imagine how uncomfortable everyone would have been feeling at this point.

  122. Maybe enjoying the fact that they had nice clean feet now and they could have dinner,

  123. but their boss, if you like, their hero,

  124. had just done something that they were too proud to do themselves.

  125. And he comes back and sits in his place.

  126. And there just would have been this awkwardness hanging in the air of,

  127. are we about to get in trouble?

  128. What does he say?

  129. Do you understand what I've done for you?

  130. You call me teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am.

  131. Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet,

  132. you also should wash one another's feet.

  133. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

  134. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master,

  135. nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

  136. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

  137. Jesus is about to be taken from them.

  138. Jesus is about to give his life up, and yet he models again,

  139. this is what love looks like if you are a follower of Jesus.

  140. Love is costly and sacrificial and active.

  141. There's this incredible interaction in this chapter where Peter says,

  142. no, no, Jesus, you can't wash my feet.

  143. It almost reminds you of the scene when John is nervous about baptising Jesus.

  144. But the issue for Peter here is,

  145. he doesn't want Jesus' love for him to cost Jesus.

  146. He doesn't want Jesus to have to do something disgusting

  147. in order to express his love for Peter.

  148. Why?

  149. Because if that's the kind of love that Jesus shows,

  150. it's also the kind of love that Jesus expects.

  151. One of the reasons that our culture and our world,

  152. and maybe even us, are so uncomfortable with a crucified saviour,

  153. a servant-hearted saviour,

  154. is because if that's who we follow,

  155. that demands a life of sacrifice,

  156. a life of service,

  157. a life of love,

  158. even for those who are difficult to love.

  159. Love is costly and sacrificial and active.

  160. One of the things I've tried to instil in my son

  161. is that he is loved.

  162. I'll try and remind him a lot,

  163. maybe even to the point where he's annoyed

  164. because he's just learnt how to say,

  165. I don't love you in return when he's sick of hearing it.

  166. But one of the things that I've taught him,

  167. one of the phrases is I say,

  168. Bailey, who does Daddy love?

  169. He says, Daddy loves Bailey.

  170. And then I keep saying it,

  171. and then he just pushes me in the face or something

  172. because he's sick of me.

  173. But one of the challenges is

  174. those words are empty

  175. and even confusing and misleading

  176. if I don't follow through and actually love him.

  177. When he's tired and a little bit unhelpful

  178. and a little bit complaining,

  179. how do I treat him then?

  180. Do I love him?

  181. Does Daddy love Bailey in that moment?

  182. Or is it just words that I speak

  183. when we're having fun in front of the TV

  184. or playing with toys?

  185. Real love requires more than words.

  186. To quote a cheesy Christian pop band from the 80s,

  187. love is a verb.

  188. Love requires doing something.

  189. One of the challenges for us

  190. is that we are inherently lazy people.

  191. It comes back to that thing of,

  192. yeah, I have to love my enemy,

  193. but I don't have to like them.

  194. Because what we do there

  195. is we create love to be this kind of

  196. vague sense of well-being

  197. that requires no action.

  198. So I can love them

  199. as long as I don't have to talk to them,

  200. go near them,

  201. give anything to them,

  202. let them come anywhere near me,

  203. because that would be liking.

  204. We're minimalists.

  205. We want to do just what is required.

  206. But that's not the kind of love that Jesus models.

  207. There is no line that Jesus is not willing to go below

  208. in order to love and serve his disciples

  209. and in order to love and serve us.

  210. Jesus models love that is costly,

  211. sacrificial and active.

  212. But also, and this is really important

  213. because I think we miss this sometimes,

  214. in this story here,

  215. Jesus models love for those

  216. who don't love him back.

  217. Did you notice in the cartoon

  218. and more importantly in the scripture in John 13,

  219. whose feet does Jesus wash?

  220. His disciples.

  221. All of his disciples.

  222. Even the feet of Judas,

  223. who is about to leave and betray him.

  224. I mean, it's one thing for Jesus

  225. to be willing to sit there

  226. and wash the grime off the feet

  227. of the 11 men who love him

  228. and will continue the mission

  229. after Jesus is gone.

  230. But how could Jesus kneel there on the floor

  231. and wipe filth

  232. off the feet of the one

  233. who is about to sell him

  234. for silver?

  235. The answer is in verse 3.

  236. Says that Jesus knew

  237. that the Father had put all things

  238. under his power

  239. and that he had come from God

  240. and was returning to God.

  241. So he got up from the meal,

  242. took off his outer clothing

  243. and wrapped a towel around his waist.

  244. The thing that enabled him

  245. to serve both his friends

  246. and his betrayer

  247. was a confidence

  248. in his heavenly Father,

  249. was a trust in what God

  250. was about to do.

  251. Remember that this is just a snapshot.

  252. This is a beginning

  253. of a section of the gospel

  254. that is unapologetically

  255. marching towards

  256. and pointing towards

  257. and focusing in on the cross.

  258. That's what this is about.

  259. The full extent of his love

  260. is not his willingness

  261. to wash poo.

  262. The full extent of his love

  263. is the willingness

  264. to suffer and die

  265. so that we might know

  266. forgiveness.

  267. How does Jesus

  268. hang on the cross

  269. and look us in the eye

  270. and pray for us

  271. while we scorn him

  272. and mock him?

  273. The answer is

  274. he trusts God.

  275. One of the reasons

  276. that I find it really difficult

  277. to love the people

  278. who don't love me

  279. is because I think

  280. I'm better than them.

  281. When I was in Bible college

  282. I was having a conversation

  283. with another guy

  284. who was studying

  285. and I can't remember

  286. what the exact context was

  287. but I was basically

  288. having a go at someone.

  289. How frustrating they were,

  290. how annoying they were,

  291. how just unaware

  292. they were

  293. of how annoying they were.

  294. And he turned to me

  295. and he said

  296. that's really sad

  297. that you feel like that.

  298. It's one of the gentlest

  299. but most pointed rebukes

  300. I've ever received.

  301. Because when we look at people

  302. and ask that question

  303. why should I have to love

  304. somebody who's like that?

  305. Why should I have to love

  306. the criminal?

  307. Why should I have to love

  308. the bully?

  309. Why should I have to love

  310. the person

  311. who has hurt me repeatedly?

  312. What we're saying is

  313. we've forgotten the gospel.

  314. We're saying

  315. there's something in me

  316. that makes me superior

  317. or better

  318. or more valuable

  319. but the gospel message

  320. is the opposite.

  321. The gospel message

  322. is that God looks at you

  323. and sees you as unworthy

  324. and even worthless

  325. but he loves you anyway.

  326. The gospel

  327. causes us

  328. to be able to look

  329. at those

  330. who are painful

  331. difficult

  332. and a struggle

  333. and say

  334. they deserve love

  335. just like I did.

  336. They need love

  337. just like I did.

  338. One other barrier

  339. that I wanted to just flag

  340. with us

  341. when it comes to

  342. being loving like Christ

  343. is culture.

  344. I was thinking about this

  345. and chatting with some

  346. of the team

  347. even just this morning

  348. about what sort of things

  349. become part of our culture

  350. that actually become

  351. obstacles for us loving

  352. in the way that Jesus

  353. talks about here.

  354. I want to give you

  355. two examples.

  356. One I can own for myself

  357. and another is an observation

  358. from a culture

  359. that I'm not a part of.

  360. Firstly,

  361. we are an achievement

  362. culture.

  363. Sydney,

  364. Australia especially,

  365. we are an achievement

  366. culture.

  367. we love winners.

  368. Think about the way

  369. we flip on a sporting

  370. team when they start

  371. losing.

  372. We love

  373. Bernard Tomek

  374. when he almost

  375. wins a tournament

  376. and we probably

  377. hate him the rest

  378. of the time.

  379. We love the

  380. Wallabies

  381. or the Socceroos

  382. or whatever team

  383. it is you're supporting.

  384. You love the Swans

  385. until about 12 hours

  386. ago.

  387. Sorry,

  388. that was a cheap shot.

  389. But we are an

  390. achievement culture.

  391. We love people

  392. who are impressive,

  393. who have skills,

  394. who have abilities.

  395. The problem is

  396. when that culture

  397. becomes part of

  398. what we do here.

  399. Because that's not

  400. how Jesus loves.

  401. And we're called

  402. to love like he did.

  403. If we come to church

  404. and only honour

  405. and only respect

  406. the people

  407. who are impressive,

  408. the people

  409. who have done

  410. things,

  411. that's not

  412. how Jesus

  413. loves.

  414. And his love,

  415. the gospel message

  416. of what he has

  417. done for unworthy

  418. people,

  419. is the love

  420. that he calls us

  421. to mark

  422. this community.

  423. We must be

  424. careful

  425. that love

  426. for one another

  427. is not defined

  428. by what we get

  429. back or how

  430. impressive

  431. or how love

  432. worthy the other

  433. person is,

  434. but is defined

  435. by the love

  436. that Jesus

  437. has shown,

  438. by the value

  439. that he has

  440. placed on every

  441. son and daughter

  442. that he has

  443. died for

  444. and forgiven.

  445. The second

  446. one is,

  447. second example

  448. is that that

  449. comes particularly

  450. in Chinese

  451. or Asian

  452. cultures.

  453. And I think

  454. this can be

  455. a strength

  456. and a weakness,

  457. but in Asian

  458. cultures it

  459. tends to be

  460. in a way

  461. that Anglo

  462. cultures are

  463. weak.

  464. Chinese cultures

  465. respect and

  466. revere

  467. seniority.

  468. Age is a

  469. mark of wisdom

  470. and honour,

  471. and so younger

  472. Chinese people

  473. will respect

  474. and defer

  475. to their

  476. parents,

  477. their grandparents,

  478. their aunties,

  479. their uncles,

  480. to older people,

  481. whereas in Anglo

  482. culture,

  483. you know,

  484. there's no respect

  485. given,

  486. unfortunately,

  487. to a fault.

  488. But the

  489. challenge is

  490. when that

  491. defines our

  492. relationships

  493. here as

  494. well.

  495. When,

  496. because you

  497. are older

  498. than me,

  499. you know

  500. better.

  501. Now,

  502. you might,

  503. but age

  504. is not the

  505. point.

  506. The thing

  507. that defines

  508. us as a

  509. community is

  510. that we are

  511. all unworthy

  512. and powerless

  513. apart from

  514. Jesus.

  515. The thing

  516. that blocks

  517. love in

  518. this community

  519. is holding

  520. on to things

  521. that are part

  522. of the way

  523. the world

  524. works at

  525. the expense

  526. of what

  527. the gospel

  528. has done.

  529. The gospel

  530. has drawn

  531. people who

  532. have no

  533. right to

  534. be in

  535. close

  536. relationship

  537. together

  538. by the

  539. same grace

  540. of Jesus

  541. Christ.

  542. Culture

  543. does not

  544. define what

  545. it looks

  546. like to

  547. love.

  548. The gospel

  549. says that

  550. a 90-year-old

  551. Chinese man

  552. can choose

  553. to serve

  554. a five-year-old

  555. Chinese child.

  556. The gospel

  557. says that

  558. the person

  559. who is

  560. skillful enough

  561. to lead

  562. every ministry

  563. we do

  564. can choose

  565. to serve

  566. the person

  567. who has

  568. just arrived

  569. and has

  570. absolutely

  571. nothing

  572. tangible

  573. to offer.

  574. The love

  575. that we are

  576. called to

  577. replicate

  578. is the

  579. love of

  580. Jesus.

  581. love

  582. that's

  583. costly,

  584. sacrificial,

  585. active,

  586. and even

  587. for or

  588. especially

  589. for those

  590. who don't

  591. give it

  592. back.

  593. At the

  594. end of

  595. chapter 13

  596. Jesus

  597. words like

  598. this in

  599. verse 34

  600. he says

  601. a new

  602. command I

  603. give you

  604. love one

  605. another as

  606. I have

  607. loved you

  608. so you

  609. must love

  610. one another.

  611. The bit

  612. that's new

  613. as I

  614. have loved

  615. you.

  616. There's

  617. always been

  618. the command

  619. for the

  620. people of

  621. God to

  622. care for

  623. one another

  624. to look

  625. after one

  626. another but

  627. now we're

  628. getting clearer

  629. definition as

  630. I have loved

  631. you.

  632. Not just in

  633. this foot

  634. washing although

  635. that's part of

  636. it but we

  637. are marching

  638. towards the

  639. cross now

  640. sacrificially,

  641. costly,

  642. actively,

  643. even for our

  644. enemies.

  645. and verse

  646. 35 by

  647. this all

  648. men will

  649. know that

  650. you are my

  651. disciples if

  652. you love

  653. one another.

  654. The gospel

  655. message that

  656. we want to

  657. take to the

  658. world, the

  659. message that

  660. there is

  661. hope and

  662. forgiveness

  663. on offer

  664. for even

  665. the darkest

  666. heart is

  667. made clearer,

  668. is even

  669. proclaimed by

  670. our love

  671. that is like

  672. Jesus, our

  673. love for one

  674. another and

  675. our service

  676. of one

  677. another.

  678. We are

  679. called to

  680. love like

  681. Jesus but

  682. the great

  683. news is that

  684. we're called

  685. to love like

  686. Jesus because

  687. we've been

  688. loved by

  689. Jesus.

  690. As I have

  691. loved you.

  692. See it's not

  693. just a model

  694. that Jesus

  695. gives us,

  696. it's actually

  697. the means for

  698. our love.

  699. It's the thing

  700. that empowers

  701. our love.

  702. It's the thing

  703. that enables

  704. our love.

  705. The model that

  706. we are given

  707. in Christ is

  708. also the thing

  709. that achieves

  710. love in

  711. his community.

  712. When I was

  713. just starting

  714. out in

  715. ministry I

  716. had a boss

  717. who would

  718. often ask

  719. me the

  720. question,

  721. what is

  722. your sanctified

  723. daydream?

  724. Which was

  725. his way of

  726. asking,

  727. what do you

  728. think God

  729. wants you to

  730. do in

  731. ministry?

  732. And I was

  733. young and I

  734. was enthusiastic

  735. and I would

  736. unashamedly

  737. respond every

  738. time with,

  739. I see myself

  740. preaching to

  741. thousands of

  742. people.

  743. Now I

  744. honestly believe

  745. I did that

  746. out of a

  747. somewhat pure

  748. heart.

  749. I'm a sinner

  750. like you so

  751. part of it was

  752. probably just the

  753. desire to be on

  754. stage in front of

  755. thousands of

  756. people but deep

  757. down I really

  758. just want as

  759. many people as

  760. possible to hear

  761. about the love

  762. of Jesus.

  763. That's what I

  764. would dream about,

  765. that's what I

  766. would always look

  767. forward to.

  768. But one of the

  769. things that I've

  770. had to learn

  771. through my

  772. Christian life

  773. is that having

  774. a big vision

  775. like that,

  776. and it's a

  777. good vision,

  778. our church has

  779. a big vision

  780. as well,

  781. is that it

  782. will never be

  783. achieved by me

  784. trying really

  785. hard.

  786. It will never

  787. be achieved by

  788. a certain skill

  789. set or a

  790. certain individual.

  791. This is where

  792. this stuff gets

  793. really practical.

  794. If we're going

  795. to love like

  796. Jesus in a

  797. way that draws

  798. people in, in a

  799. way that preaches

  800. the gospel, in a

  801. way that sees

  802. lives transformed

  803. by the hope and

  804. forgiveness that

  805. is on offer,

  806. loving like

  807. Jesus is

  808. possible because

  809. we've been loved

  810. by Jesus.

  811. And then now

  812. in John 15,

  813. flip back there

  814. if you went to

  815. John 13,

  816. John 15,

    John 15:4

  817. verse 4,

  818. remain in me

  819. and I will

  820. remain in you.

  821. No branch can

  822. bear fruit by

  823. itself, it must

  824. remain in the

  825. vine, neither can

  826. you bear fruit

  827. unless you remain

  828. in me.

  829. I am the vine,

  830. you are the

  831. branches.

  832. If a man remains

  833. in me and I in

  834. him, he will

  835. bear much fruit.

  836. Apart from me,

  837. you can do

  838. nothing.

  839. love like Jesus,

  840. love by Jesus,

  841. love in Jesus.

  842. Our hearts desire

  843. as a church, and

  844. I'm sure for many

  845. of you, the thing

  846. that drives you is

  847. fruit.

  848. You want more to

  849. know Jesus.

  850. It's like we talked

  851. about last week.

  852. You have a heart

  853. that is desperate

  854. for lost people to

  855. know the joy that

  856. you know, to know

  857. the incredible,

  858. unconditional love

  859. of a heavenly

  860. father, to know

  861. the hope of

  862. heaven.

  863. It is a big

  864. vision.

  865. That's the fruit

  866. talked about here.

  867. Lives

  868. transformed.

  869. It's the fruit of

  870. our own lives

  871. lived out in

  872. love, and it's

  873. important for us

  874. to dream.

  875. It's important for

  876. us to have that

  877. heart to do big

  878. things for God.

  879. In fact, it's

  880. even almost required

  881. in chapter 15.

  882. But what's the

  883. command in this

  884. chapter?

  885. It's a chapter

  886. about vines and

  887. branches and fruit

  888. and love and all

  889. this stuff.

  890. What's the

  891. command?

  892. It's not to

  893. bear fruit.

  894. The command in

  895. John 15 is that

  896. first word in

  897. verse 4.

  898. Remain.

  899. That's the

  900. instruction.

  901. Now, we get

  902. evidence of what

  903. that remaining

  904. will look like.

  905. In verse 7, it

  906. says, if you

  907. remain in me and

  908. my words remain in

  909. you, we need to be

  910. Bible-saturated

  911. people.

  912. That's what it

  913. means to live in

  914. the love of God.

  915. Not so that we'll

  916. have knowledge, but

  917. when we sit in

  918. God's word, we

  919. hear his voice, we

  920. get encouragement, we

  921. get assurance, we

  922. get reminded that

  923. his love is

  924. unconditional, that

  925. his love is

  926. powerful, that his

  927. love is effective.

  928. Again, in verse 7,

  929. if you remain in me

  930. and my words remain

  931. in you, ask

  932. whatever you wish

  933. and it will be

  934. given to you.

  935. Jump down to

  936. verse 16.

  937. You did not

  938. choose me, but I

  939. chose you and

  940. appointed you to

  941. go and bear fruit,

  942. fruit that will

  943. last.

  944. Then the Father

  945. will give you

  946. whatever you ask

  947. in my name.

  948. Prayer.

  949. Absolutely call

  950. is prayer.

  951. Remaining in the

  952. love of Jesus is

  953. about depending on

  954. him for everything.

  955. That's what God's

  956. love does, is it

  957. takes weak and

  958. powerless, unimpressive

  959. people and adopts

  960. them as dearly loved

  961. sons and daughters

  962. and empowers them to

  963. do incredible things

  964. for God's glory and

  965. God's purpose.

  966. Prayer is the

  967. evidence that we

  968. understand it's only

  969. by him, only by

  970. his love.

  971. As a preacher, I

  972. often get nervous

  973. when I get to the

  974. end of a sermon

  975. preparation and the

  976. application that I'm

  977. walking towards is

  978. read the Bible and

  979. pray because, you

  980. know, someone's going

  981. to tell me afterwards,

  982. we know.

  983. We've heard that

  984. before.

  985. That can't be the

  986. only point.

  987. But what if it's so

  988. key that we just

  989. need to hear it

  990. again?

  991. Just one more

  992. time.

  993. Remaining in God's

  994. love means hearing

  995. his voice, means

  996. being actively

  997. dependent on him

  998. in everything and

  999. for everything.

  1000. I mean, we're told

  1001. there in no

  1002. uncertain words in

  1003. verse 5, apart from

  1004. him, you can do

  1005. nothing.

  1006. You need him to

  1007. wake in the

  1008. morning.

  1009. You need his

  1010. strength to achieve

  1011. anything, let alone

  1012. this Christ-like love

  1013. that he's called us

  1014. to, this love for

  1015. enemies, this service

  1016. of one another, even

  1017. when we annoy each

  1018. other.

  1019. Remaining in

  1020. Christ is about

  1021. having his power at

  1022. work in us.

  1023. That's what the

  1024. whole vine image is.

  1025. The life that

  1026. comes from the

  1027. vine flowing

  1028. through the

  1029. branches to

  1030. produce the

  1031. fruit.

  1032. We're just a

  1033. conduit of his

  1034. power and his

  1035. love and his

  1036. hope.

  1037. But the

  1038. incredible thing

  1039. is, is he

  1040. pours out good

  1041. things to us

  1042. along the way.

  1043. Verse 11, I've

  1044. told you this so

1045. that my joy may be

  1046. in you and that

  1047. your joy may be

  1048. complete.

  1049. Loving each other

  1050. can be a joy,

  1051. even when it's

  1052. sacrificial and

  1053. costly.

  1054. Verse 15, I

  1055. no longer call

  1056. you servants

  1057. because a

  1058. servant does not

  1059. know his

  1060. master's business.

  1061. Instead, I've

  1062. called you

  1063. friends for

  1064. everything that I

  1065. learned from my

  1066. father I've made

  1067. known to you.

  1068. We're not the

  1069. hired helpers.

  1070. We're partners.

  1071. We're co-heirs

  1072. with Christ.

  1073. We are friends on

  1074. his mission.

  1075. Remain.

  1076. That's the

  1077. command.

  1078. That's the

  1079. instruction.

  1080. verse 12 in

  1081. chapter 15

  1082. echoes chapter

  1083. 13.

  1084. It says, my

  1085. command is

  1086. this, love

  1087. each other as

  1088. I have loved

  1089. you.

  1090. Verse 17

  1091. finishes, this

  1092. is my command,

  1093. love each

  1094. other.

  1095. But this

  1096. passage is about

  1097. remaining.

  1098. It's about

  1099. vines and

  1100. fruit.

  1101. So why add

  1102. those two

  1103. commands to

  1104. love?

  1105. love?

  1106. If the

  1107. instruction is

  1108. that we must

  1109. remain in

  1110. Christ, why

  1111. do we end up

  1112. there with the

  1113. command to

  1114. love again?

  1115. Well, because

  1116. it's the key.

  1117. Loving like

  1118. Jesus is made

  1119. possible because

  1120. we have been

  1121. loved by

  1122. Jesus.

  1123. And it's

  1124. empowered when

  1125. we remain in

  1126. Jesus.

  1127. The key in

  1128. this passage in

  1129. John 15, and

  1130. this is how we

  1131. need to

  1132. understand John

  1133. 13, this is

  1134. how we need to

  1135. understand the

  1136. gospel, this is

  1137. how we need to

  1138. understand every

  1139. aspect of being a

  1140. Christian and

  1141. following Jesus.

  1142. The key is not

  1143. our love.

  1144. It's his love

  1145. for us.

  1146. As he loved,

  1147. so we must

  1148. love.

  1149. And his love is

  1150. not just a fuzzy

  1151. feeling.

  1152. It's not just,

  1153. oh, isn't it

  1154. nice that God

  1155. thinks I'm

  1156. special.

  1157. God's love is

  1158. effective.

  1159. God's love is

  1160. doing something.

  1161. It's achieving an

  1162. outcome.

  1163. It's working.

  1164. God's love is a

  1165. love that he has

  1166. put in you that

  1167. is transforming

  1168. your heart.

  1169. It's enabling

  1170. you to see that

  1171. annoying person as

  1172. someone that God

  1173. loves and someone

  1174. who you can love

  1175. too.

  1176. It's enabling you

  1177. to bear fruit, to

  1178. speak the gospel in

  1179. such a way that

  1180. people might come

  1181. to know the love

  1182. and forgiveness

  1183. of Christ that

  1184. they don't

  1185. deserve but that

  1186. they desperately

  1187. want.

  1188. The key is not

  1189. our love, it's

  1190. God's love and

  1191. that's why

  1192. remaining is the

  1193. command.

  1194. That's why

  1195. remaining is the

  1196. instruction because

  1197. growing is the

  1198. key to serving.

  1199. Being in Christ

  1200. and knowing his

  1201. love for you,

  1202. apart from

  1203. anything you

  1204. would ever do,

  1205. is the key to

  1206. being released to

  1207. serve joyfully.

  1208. and without

  1209. burden and

  1210. lovingly, even

  1211. when it costs,

  1212. remain, dwell,

  1213. soak, live in

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. In his forgiveness,

  1216. in his love,

  1217. in his purpose,

  1218. in his hope,

  1219. hope, so that we

  1220. can bear fruit,

  1221. so that we can

  1222. love like he

  1223. did, so that we

  1224. can serve, so

  1225. that we can

  1226. transform the

  1227. world with his

  1228. hope.

  1229. Let me leave you

  1230. with these last

  1231. two verses.

  1232. Jesus says,

  1233. you did not

  1234. choose me,

  1235. but I chose

  1236. you, and I

  1237. appointed you

  1238. to go and

  1239. bear fruit,

  1240. fruit that

  1241. will last,

  1242. then the

  1243. Father will

  1244. give you

  1245. whatever you

  1246. ask in my

  1247. name.

  1248. This is my

  1249. command,

  1250. love each

  1251. other.

  1252. Let's pray.

  1253. Father God,

  1254. please help

  1255. us this

  1256. morning, and

  1257. not just this

  1258. morning, but

  1259. every day, to

  1260. feel the weight

  1261. of your love.

  1262. Help us to

  1263. remember again

  1264. the power of

  1265. your love to

  1266. reach out to a

  1267. lost person like

  1268. us, the

  1269. sufficiency of

  1270. your love to

  1271. wash us clean

  1272. by the blood of

  1273. Jesus.

  1274. The completeness

  1275. of your love

  1276. that is working

  1277. in us to

  1278. prepare us for

  1279. heaven, for

  1280. eternity with

  1281. you.

  1282. And in the

  1283. security of

  1284. your love, may

  1285. we be

  1286. energized and

  1287. empowered to

  1288. show that same

  1289. love to our

  1290. brothers and

  1291. sisters, and

  1292. to the world

  1293. around us, and

  1294. to our enemies.

  1295. May we

  1296. proclaim the

  1297. gospel through

  1298. active, costly,

  1299. sacrificial love.

  1300. love, enable

  1301. us to trust

  1302. you and to

  1303. be so confident

  1304. in your

  1305. goodness that

  1306. we can

  1307. gladly bear

  1308. the cost

  1309. ourselves so

  1310. that we might

  1311. show love to

  1312. those in need.

  1313. father, may we

  1314. remain in you.

  1315. May we soak in

  1316. your word, listen

  1317. to your promises,

  1318. hear your voice,

1319. cry out to you in

  1320. prayer, in such a

  1321. way that your

  1322. power and your

  1323. love and your

  1324. hope flows through

  1325. us and produces

  1326. fruit.

  1327. father, we have a

  1328. big vision as a

  1329. church.

  1330. We don't just

  1331. want to be a

  1332. group of people

  1333. who meets

  1334. together.

  1335. We want to be

  1336. your tool for

  1337. your purposes.

  1338. We want to be

  1339. used to see the

  1340. world transformed,

  1341. to see people

  1342. drawn into your

  1343. kingdom from

  1344. darkness to

  1345. light, from

  1346. death to

  1347. life.

  1348. So please,

  1349. God, work in

  1350. us, change

  1351. us, equip us,

  1352. empower us to

  1353. love like Jesus

  1354. did.

  1355. Amen.
