  1. Well, let me add my welcome. My name is Sam, I'm one of the pastors here, and it is good to get to open God's Word with you tonight.

  2. Keep that passage open in front of you.

  3. Just recently I had the chance to be at a conference, and something they did as part of the conference was pay tribute to someone who had achieved something significant.

  4. His name is Professor Graham Clark, so he's an Australian professor, and he is the man who invented the bionic ear.

  5. And as impressive as his achievement is, what I love about his story, and many stories of people who have done significant things, is where those stories begin.

  6. It's to think that to get to the point where he actually achieved his goal, there was a moment where that dream was birthed.

  7. And what you may not know about him is Graham Clark grew up with a father who was deaf.

  8. I actually found out this morning that one of our morning parishioners, Marie Farley, went to university with Graham and actually knows him.

  9. And she was giving me all sorts of extra details.

  10. So Graham Clark, growing up, had a father who was a pharmacist and had a chemist, and he was completely deaf.

  11. And the incredible challenges that his dad faced were what birthed a dream for Graham Clark to ultimately be able to deal with that issue and fix it.

  12. And it's a really exciting thing, I think, to not just see the finish line, but to see the journey that was taken to that greatness, to that significance.

  13. And I wonder if when you hear stories like that, or stories like we just read in Hebrews 11, if there's a part of you that thinks,

  14. I wish I had a vision like that.

  15. I wish I had a dream for significance.

  16. I wish I had something that I was just going to achieve.

  17. I wish I could somehow imagine me being the one achieving something great.

  18. What if it's there and you just haven't seen it yet?

  19. What if the path to greatness is right in front of you, but you just haven't taken the steps to walk down it yet?

  20. Throughout Scripture, there are many, many people who have achieved great things for God.

  21. And in every single one of them, there is a common ingredient.

  22. Faith.

  23. The passage we just read in Hebrews 11 is sometimes known as the Faith Hall of Fame.

  24. We think it's this list of kind of faith superheroes, people who just had incredibly massive and impressive faith.

  25. But actually, Hebrews 11 is not about them.

  26. It's about faith.

  27. And faith is about God.

  28. The superhero, if you like, in Hebrews 11 is God himself.

  29. The powerful one in Hebrews 11 is God himself.

  30. Faith is the thing that achieves significance for everyone in Hebrews 11.

  31. The same faith that all Christians have in the same God.

  32. See, faith isn't just about getting a ticket to heaven.

  33. Faith is a foundation.

  34. Faith is a power that God wants to unleash in your life.

  35. Not just an end point power or an end point destination.

  36. It's a foundation and a power that can be unleashed in us to achieve something significant in our lives now.

  37. This is week three of Activate.

  38. If this is your first week here or you've been away for a couple of weeks,

  39. all the excitement that you walked past on your way in is Activate.

  40. It's that time twice a year where we stop and have a chance to connect and serve in church.

  41. So there's a chance for joining small groups.

  42. There's a chance for committing to doing ministry.

  43. And one of the questions we've been asking over the last three weeks is,

  44. how can you invest yourself in the work that God is doing here at St. Paul's Chatswood?

  45. So how can you be a part of caring for people who are in need?

  46. How can you be a part of bringing hope to people who don't have it?

  47. What part can you play?

  48. And really the question behind that question is the one we're looking at tonight.

  49. The question is, what would your life and my life and our life together look like

  50. if we genuinely shared the faith of those who have gone before us?

  51. I mean, as we begin to dream about that possibility,

  52. dream about the possibility of God's power achieving something significant in us,

  53. we need to be clear on what we mean when we say faith.

  54. It's not a blank check.

  55. But what do we mean?

  56. First off, let's be clear on a few things that faith isn't.

  57. Firstly, faith is not blind and it's not baseless.

  58. I think I've said to you guys before,

  59. faith is a word that sometimes gets substituted for belief.

  60. And they're close, but they're not exactly the same thing.

  61. If I was to climb onto the roof of the church and decide that I wanted to fly,

  62. it doesn't matter how hard I flap my arms,

  63. if I jump off, I'm going to fall and I'm going to fall quickly.

  64. Because there's no basis for the belief that I can fly.

  65. Faith is actually about the thing that you believe,

  66. more than how much belief you have.

  67. See, desire is not a sufficient basis for faith.

  68. It doesn't matter how much I want to fly or how much I believe it,

  69. there's no basis for either of those things.

  70. The thing that I'm trusting in, the object, is what defines faith.

  71. So every time I'm driving in my car and I press on the brake,

  72. I'm placing my faith in the brakes to work and to stop me before I have a crash.

  73. But it's not my belief in the brakes that makes them work and helps me stop.

  74. It's the functionality of the brakes.

  75. It's actually their ability to stop the wheels in such a way that I don't hit another car.

  76. My belief in the brakes, if they're not functional, is irrelevant.

  77. I'm still going to crash.

  78. It's the functionality of the thing that I'm trusting,

  79. that I'm believing in, that I'm depending on.

  80. What matters when we talk about faith in any sphere of life is not so much the faith itself,

  81. but it's what we're placing our faith in.

  82. It's the object that's being trusted and depended on.

  83. And so for Christians, faith is not some vague, ethereal idea

  84. that gets kind of new content depending on what situation we're facing.

  85. You know, I have faith to fly, I have faith to jump high, whatever it is.

  86. Christian faith has specific content.

  87. It has a specific object.

  88. Faith, if it's Christian, is necessarily and firmly founded on the promise of God.

  89. Have a look in Hebrews 11 at verse 7.

  90. It says that,

  91. So Noah had faith in what?

  92. His desire to see the world flooded?

  93. His hope that God would judge the sinful people all around him?

  94. No.

  95. His faith is based on the fact that God warned him.

  96. God's word was there.

  97. God promised something and Noah believed that God would follow through.

  98. Now you've got to remember,

  99. this is just a snapshot of a whole story back in Genesis 6.

  100. Noah was ridiculed when he did this.

  101. He was building the biggest boat that the world has ever seen in the middle of nowhere

  102. with no means of getting it anywhere near water.

  103. Probably in the middle of a drought.

  104. And so people said,

  105. You've lost your mind, Noah.

  106. You are in all sorts.

  107. But he stood firm.

  108. He kept his faith because he was trusting something that was immovable.

  109. He was trusting the words of God who doesn't change.

  110. Faith is not a blind step in the dark full of optimistic hope.

  111. It's confidence based on the sure promise of God.

  112. So faith is not blind or baseless.

  113. The second thing faith is not is it's not seen.

  114. Hebrews 11 and verse 13 says,

  115. All these people were still living by faith when they died.

  116. They did not receive the things promised.

  117. They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance.

  118. Or verse 39 of chapter 11.

  119. All of these people, these heroes apparently of the faith,

  120. were still living by faith when they died.

  121. So they hadn't yet been given the things they were promised.

  122. The things that were shaping their whole life.

  123. The things that were motivating them to sacrifice,

  124. to suffer for following God with unwavering commitment.

  125. They didn't receive them.

  126. And that's because faith is by its nature forward looking.

  127. Faith is future oriented.

  128. It's about something that you don't yet have.

  129. Something that's just that little bit beyond your reach.

  130. And that's important.

  131. Because it reminds us as Christians,

  132. that stepping out in faith,

  133. is not just a way of kind of having a transaction

  134. to get something we want from God.

  135. Faith's not necessarily going to be about getting immediate gratification back

  136. because we've done something bold for God.

  137. The definition that Hebrews gives us is quite clear.

  138. In verse 1 of chapter 11.

  139. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for

  140. and certain of what we do not see.

  141. Now I have a slightly adjusted definition.

  142. Faith is a certain future hope

  143. that changes your uncertain present.

  144. Faith is a certain future hope

  145. that changes your uncertain present.

  146. See, faith brings perspective into situations

  147. that would otherwise be overwhelming.

  148. Faith has the power to take something that could be hopeless

  149. and give you a firm footing.

  150. Even though faith is future directed,

  151. we must understand that it has power now.

  152. It is about something we look forward to,

  153. something we haven't yet received,

  154. but it has power now.

  155. And so the question remains,

  156. what does it look like to live by faith?

  157. And I guess maybe more specifically,

  158. what would your life and my life and our life look like

  159. if the defining reality of our existence

  160. was the death and resurrection of Jesus?

  161. What if that was the looking glass

  162. through which we perceived every circumstance that we faced,

  163. every relationship, every job,

  164. every engagement, every challenge,

  165. every obstacle?

  166. Because this chapter in Hebrews

  167. is called the Faith Hall of Fame

  168. because it's clearly a picture of significant life.

  169. These people did significant things.

  170. And it doesn't matter whether you're three or 23 or 103.

  171. Faith is the ingredient in this chapter.

  172. It's the thing common to every single person who's mentioned.

  173. And today, we need to lift our eyes

  174. and begin to dream.

  175. Begin to imagine just how incredible it might be

  176. for God to work through us in a similar kind of way.

  177. because I can guarantee that God's plan for you

  178. is bigger and better than your plan for you.

  179. So as you begin to visualize that,

  180. let's unpack what the path might look like to get there.

  181. Four things that faith looks like from Hebrews 12.

  182. Therefore, since we are surrounded

  183. by such a great cloud of witnesses,

  184. let us throw off everything that hinders

  185. and the sin that so easily entangles,

  186. and let us run with perseverance

  187. the race marked out for us.

  188. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,

  189. the author and perfecter of our faith,

  190. who for the joy set before him,

  191. endured the cross, scorning its shame,

  192. and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  193. The first thing that faith looks like is surrounded.

  194. Faith is not a personal or isolated reality.

  195. Our Christian faith is a communal activity.

  196. One of the things that seeds our faith,

  197. or that strengthens our faith,

  198. or even gives birth to our faith,

  199. is actually seeing faith in the lives of other people.

  200. And not even necessarily the superheroes,

  201. like in chapter 11 here,

  202. but surrounded by brothers and sisters

  203. here in this community,

  204. who are living out faith in their jobs,

  205. in their families.

  206. People like the Fitzroy family

  207. in our 930 congregation,

  208. who dealt with a really difficult

  209. and challenging situation

  210. with the health of their second born son,

  211. and yet continued to trust God

  212. in spite of the uncertainty.

  213. Or living out faith like the Fitzpatricks,

  214. who moved to a suburb further away from us

  215. and less convenient,

  216. but convinced and convicted

  217. that this is where they wanted to serve.

  218. That this was the ministry

  219. that God was calling them to.

  220. We are surrounded by witnesses

  221. who are living out their faith

  222. in the day-to-day.

  223. And faith is a shared journey

  224. towards a future hope.

  225. You're not required to hold on to hope

  226. in the difficult circumstances by yourself.

  227. That's what was so great

  228. watching the Fitzroy family.

  229. It's what's so great watching

  230. in so many of our lives and situations

  231. is that when we are struggling,

  232. God provides the encouragement and support,

  233. not within ourselves,

  234. but within the cloud of witnesses.

  235. He gives us models

  236. of what it looks like to persevere.

  237. He gives us brothers and sisters

  238. who bear with us.

  239. This is the point of chapter 11.

  240. All of these witnesses

  241. are on the same journey of faith.

  242. That's why they can be an encouragement for us.

  243. And so faith lived out

  244. demands that we surround ourselves

  245. with the people of God,

  246. with witnesses to faith.

  247. It demands that we gather,

  248. that we invest relationally in one another,

  249. that we benefit from this community,

  250. but also that we seek to be a benefit

  251. to this community.

  252. Because faith has one goal,

  253. heaven.

  254. So it's uncompromising

  255. and undivided

  256. in its commitment to getting there.

  257. And in our quest for heaven,

  258. faith recognizes

  259. that we are stronger together.

  260. Faith is surrounded.

  261. The second thing

  262. is faith is unhindered.

  263. We must throw off

  264. anything that gets in the way.

  265. As a younger man,

  266. I used to go on Christian camps

  267. for one reason

  268. and one reason only.

  269. Girls.

  270. From the moment

  271. that I arrived at registration,

  272. I would begin to prowl

  273. the other campers

  274. looking for pretty girls.

  275. I would then proceed

  276. to place myself

  277. in the proximity

  278. of pretty girls.

  279. I would then proceed

  280. to do whatever I could

  281. to make said pretty girls

  282. notice me.

  283. And you know,

  284. there was a lot of girls

  285. in the youth ministry

  286. that I went to,

  287. so sometimes this was quite

  288. a big task.

  289. But one camp,

  290. I got particularly ambitious.

  291. Now,

  292. you guys might know

  293. that I'm not somebody

  294. who has really ever

  295. in my life struggled

  296. particularly with self-confidence.

  297. But,

  298. unfortunately,

  299. my self-perception

  300. and reality

  301. have not always lined up.

  302. And so,

  303. from where I was standing,

  304. I would strut around

  305. registration thinking

  306. that, you know,

  307. Brad Pitt

  308. is gracing the halls

  309. of camp registration

  310. and that any girl

  311. with functional eyes

  312. is struggling

  313. to control herself.

  314. In reality,

  315. I was a little chubby.

  316. I had a bold haircut

  317. and a goofy smile.

  318. In my perception,

  319. I was very smooth.

  320. I was irresistible

  321. to the opposite sex.

  322. I had all the lines

  323. ready to go.

  324. But in reality,

  325. if any of these girls

  326. actually talked to me,

  327. all I could manage was,

  328. hi.

  329. Hi.

  330. But,

  331. in spite of reality,

  332. one year,

  333. I got particularly bold.

  334. I spotted

  335. a gorgeous girl

  336. at registration.

  337. I found out her name,

  338. Alicia.

  339. She was in year 10.

  340. I was in year 8.

  341. To make matters worse,

  342. my older brother

  343. was in year 8

  344. and he was actually

  345. all the things

  346. that I thought I was.

  347. He was attractive

  348. and he was smooth

  349. with the ladies.

  350. But,

  351. remember,

  352. I hadn't realised

  353. that there was barriers

  354. like that.

  355. I was Brad Pitt.

  356. So,

  357. eyes on the prize

  358. I dedicated myself

  359. for the seven days

  360. of that camp

  361. to pursuing

  362. this older woman.

  363. I was so committed

  364. that at mealtimes

  365. I sat with her

  366. and her friends

  367. instead of my friends.

  368. When it came

  369. to picking activities,

  370. I chose what she was doing

  371. instead of what

  372. I wanted to do.

  373. Craft was much more exciting

  374. than abseiling.

  375. In fact,

  376. for that week,

  377. I pretended to learn

  378. how to whistle

  379. because she couldn't whistle

  380. and that gave us

  381. something to do together.

  382. I mean,

  383. come on,

  384. who can't whistle?

  385. I even wrote

  386. her little love notes

  387. and no self-respecting

  388. 14-year-old

  389. writes any notes,

  390. let alone love notes,

  391. that other people

  392. might find out about.

  393. But I was single-minded

  394. in my commitment

  395. to the goal

  396. of getting this older woman

  397. to like me

  398. and be my girlfriend.

  399. Now,

  400. unfortunately,

  401. that was my only goal.

  402. So after I succeeded,

  403. and I did succeed,

  404. we started dating

  405. for a whopping

  406. three weeks

  407. and then broke up

  408. because I hadn't figured out

  409. what happened after

  410. I managed to convince her

  411. to go out with me.

  412. Now,

  413. a quick caveat

  414. on this story.

  415. I'm not endorsing

  416. going on camps

  417. to pick up girls.

  418. The moral of the story

  419. is not try harder

  420. when you're trying

  421. to get a boyfriend

  422. or girlfriend

  423. or husband or wife.

  424. That's not what I'm saying.

  425. The point is,

  426. when you really

  427. want something,

  428. when it is first

  429. priority for you,

  430. you need to forego

  431. anything

  432. that could slow you down

  433. from achieving

  434. your goal.

  435. For us as Christians,

  436. faith defines

  437. our goal.

  438. Heaven is the destination.

  439. That is what we are

  440. being prepared for

  441. and every step

  442. between now and then

  443. exists as an opportunity

  444. to serve God.

  445. Every step

  446. is an opportunity

  447. to be satisfied

  448. in God,

  449. to enjoy Him

  450. and to point

  451. other people

  452. to see

  453. how satisfying

  454. He is.

  455. And so,

  456. we've got to

  457. throw off

  458. anything

  459. that gets

  460. in the way

  461. of that.

  462. Anything

  463. that gets

  464. in the way

  465. of us serving

  466. or enjoying

  467. our God.

  468. Anything

  469. that steals

  470. our affection

  471. from Him.

  472. One of the questions

  473. we need to be asking

  474. about everything

  475. we do is,

  476. does this thing

  477. help me love God

  478. or does it

  479. hinder my love

  480. for God?

  481. Does it grow

  482. my affection

  483. for Jesus

  484. or does it steal

  485. my affection

  486. from Jesus?

  487. There is no

  488. neutral category

  489. when it comes

  490. to the way

  491. that we spend

  492. our time

  493. and our energy

  494. and our money.

  495. It either

  496. drives us forward

  497. in our love

  498. for God

  499. and our enjoyment

  500. of Him

  501. or it holds us

  502. back.

  503. By definition

  504. if it's not

  505. helping

  506. it's hindering.

  507. And so we need

  508. to let go

  509. of sins

  510. that we're

  511. holding on to.

  512. Maybe secret

  513. sins

  514. that we've

  515. kind of

  516. conceded on.

  517. You know

  518. the ones

  519. that we've

  520. kind of

  521. gone

  522. oh look

  523. I'm a sinful

  524. person

  525. I'm not

  526. perfect yet

  527. so it's

  528. just part

  529. of the deal.

  530. Throwing

  531. those things

  532. off means

  533. confessing

  534. them to God

  535. and trusting

  536. Him

  537. when He says

  538. that Jesus

  539. has died

  540. and risen

  541. and that's

  542. enough

  543. to wash

  544. you clean

  545. and to

  546. transform

  547. your heart.

  548. This isn't

  549. about being

  550. perfect

  551. but it's

  552. about being

  553. on a journey

  554. an ongoing

  555. process of

  556. trusting God

  557. to keep

  558. washing you

  559. and keep

  560. forgiving you

  561. by His grace.

  562. Plus

  563. all this

  564. throwing off

  565. as well as

  566. wrestling with

  567. sin and things

  568. that are a waste

  569. of our time

  570. includes letting

  571. go of the

  572. fear and

  573. insecurity

  574. that sometimes

  575. holds us

  576. back from

  577. serving God

  578. in the ways

  579. that He wants.

  580. Now I know

  581. that we don't

  582. actually have

  583. the ability

  584. to switch

  585. off that

  586. part of

  587. the brain

  588. that freaks

  589. out sometimes

  590. but what

  591. we do

  592. have

  593. is the

  594. opportunity

  595. to take

  596. that fear

  597. or that

  598. anxiety

  599. or that

  600. uncertainty

  601. and take

  602. it to

  603. the cross.

  604. What we

  605. do have

  606. is a

  607. cloud of

  608. witnesses

  609. who are

  610. maybe going

  611. through the

  612. same

  613. processes

  614. but have

  615. learnt

  616. how to

  617. swap

  618. that fear

  619. and uncertainty

  620. for the

  621. confidence

  622. in what

  623. God has

  624. done

  625. and in

  626. His

  627. power

  628. instead of

  629. in our

  630. own

  631. power.

  632. We can

  633. trade our

  634. fear for

  635. the confidence

  636. that comes

  637. from knowing

  638. that we

  639. have a

  640. Saviour

  641. who has

  642. proved

  643. that He's

  644. more powerful

  645. than anything

  646. we will ever

  647. face.

  648. And when

  649. we're free

  650. from that

  651. hindrance

  652. the third

  653. thing that

  654. our faith

  655. will do

  656. is release

  657. us to

  658. run.

  659. Again

  660. Hebrews

  661. 12

  662. end of

  663. verse 1

  664. let us

  665. throw off

  666. everything

  667. that hinders

  668. and the

  669. sin that

  670. so easily

  671. entangles

  672. and let

  673. us run

  674. with

  675. perseverance

  676. the race

  677. marked out

  678. for us.

  679. Run the

  680. race.

  681. Faith is

  682. not half

  683. hearted or

  684. apathetic or

  685. lethargic.

  686. Faith is

  687. undivided and

  688. committed and

  689. energetic and

  690. enthusiastic but

  691. it's really

  692. important that

  693. you run

  694. your race.

  695. when I was

  696. growing up

  697. I grew up

  698. with a

  699. group of

  700. guys getting

  701. discipled as

  702. a teenager

  703. and some

  704. of those

  705. guys were

  706. clearly

  707. impressive

  708. people.

  709. I had a

  710. friend who

  711. happened to

  712. be into

  713. comics but

  714. that masked

  715. an ability

  716. that he had

  717. to basically

  718. inhale books.

  719. He's now a

  720. minister and

  721. the time in

  722. his life has

  723. come where

  724. he's starting

  725. to output

  726. some of the

  727. books that

  728. he has been

  729. inhaling for

  730. the first

  731. half of

  732. his life.

  733. He's just

  734. recently published

  735. his first book

  736. on leadership.

  737. If you're a

  738. Christian leader

  739. in any capacity

  740. I recommend it

  741. but that's not

  742. the point of

  743. what I'm saying.

  744. He has published

  745. this book and

  746. it's a significant

  747. work and he's a

  748. significant guy and

  749. he will be known

  750. in church and

  751. ministry and

  752. Christian circles

  753. going forward as

  754. somebody who will

  755. do something

  756. significant for

  757. God by faith.

  758. But what I

  759. wanted to read

  760. to you was the

  761. second page.

  762. It says

  763. this,

  764. for Stu

  765. and Tim,

  766. the two men

  767. God used to

  768. bring me to

  769. Jesus,

  770. build me up in

  771. him and send

  772. me out for

  773. him.

  774. At a stretch

  775. the ministry

  776. nerds amongst

  777. you might have

  778. some idea who

  779. Tim is.

  780. He's a kind

  781. of fairly

  782. significant youth

  783. pastor but if

  784. not that's fine

  785. too.

  786. But no one

  787. here will know

  788. who Stu is.

  789. No one here

  790. will know that

  791. Stu spent week

  792. after week

  793. after week while

  794. we were in

  795. high school

  796. sewing into

  797. Craig and

  798. explaining who

  799. Jesus was and

  800. what it meant

  801. to follow him.

  802. No one here

  803. will know that

  804. Stu still calls

  805. Craig and

  806. me and a

  807. bunch of the

  808. other guys that

  809. he discipled when

  810. we were teenagers

  811. to encourage us

  812. to continue to

  813. trust God and

  814. live by faith.

  815. faith.

  816. But the key here is

  817. Stu has still done

  818. something significant

  819. by faith.

  820. It's a different

  821. path to the one

  822. that Craig who

  823. wrote the book

  824. is running but

  825. he's still running

  826. his race.

  827. He still

  828. sacrificed hours

  829. when he was at

  830. university and in

  831. his early marriage

  832. and during his

  833. family to sow into

  834. ungrateful teenage

  835. boys like me and

  836. like Craig and like

  837. a few others.

  838. faith doesn't turn

  839. Christians into

  840. clones.

  841. It doesn't take

  842. away everything

  843. about you that's

  844. unique and say we

  845. all have to do the

  846. same things.

  847. Sure there's some

  848. stuff that we're all

  849. called to like loving

  850. people who don't know

  851. Jesus, being humble,

  852. being generous but in

  853. terms of the

  854. specifics of the

  855. race that God has

  856. designed for you,

  857. it's your race.

  858. just like in chapter

  859. 11, Noah had a

  860. race, Abraham had a

  861. race, Enoch had a

  862. race.

  863. Did you notice that

  864. Moses' parents got a

  865. mention in chapter

  866. 11?

  867. They're not big

  868. players in the Bible

  869. other than getting a

  870. mention here but they

  871. did the thing that was

  872. required.

  873. They were bold at a

  874. time that boldness was

  875. required, they protected

  876. their son and then God

  877. went on to use Moses

  878. significantly.

  879. Some of us might be

  880. called to by faith live

  881. in singleness in a way

  882. that honors God.

  883. Some of us might be

  884. called by faith to work

  885. significantly in caring

  886. for those who are

  887. desperate and in need in

  888. our society.

  889. Some of us might be

  890. called by faith to honor

  891. God in the corporate

  892. world or in artistic

  893. expression or even in

  894. ministry.

  895. But the key is wherever

  896. God has placed you,

  897. whatever he has put in

  898. your life, get rid of

  899. what is slowing you

  900. down so that you can

  901. run.

  902. Confess the sin that

  903. you're holding on to

  904. and being distracted by.

  905. Trust Jesus to forgive

  906. you and run with the

  907. energy and freedom that

  908. he has won for you.

  909. I wonder where in your

  910. life tonight God is

  911. asking you to trust his

  912. promises more fully.

  913. I mean are there any

  914. areas of your life,

  915. maybe it's your job,

  916. maybe it's home,

  917. maybe it's social,

  918. whatever it is, are

  919. there any areas where

  920. trusting Jesus makes no

  921. difference right now?

  922. And if so, just think for

  923. a minute, what difference

  924. would it make if you did

  925. trust him there?

  926. Faith is about stepping out

  927. of your comfort zone.

  928. It's about dreaming beyond

  929. what you're capable of

  930. within yourself and

  931. chasing that dream because

  932. you believe and trust the

  933. promises that God has

  934. made.

  935. Lastly and most

  936. importantly, faith is

  937. eyes on Jesus.

  938. Do you ever wish that you

  939. knew the future?

  940. I mean wouldn't life be

  941. easier if you knew how it

  942. was going to end up, take

  943. stress out of those

  944. decisions, out of those

  945. uncertainties?

  946. Well you do.

  947. Listen to Hebrews 12

  948. again, verse 2.

  949. Let us fix our eyes on

  950. Jesus, the author and

  951. perfecter of our faith,

  952. who for the joy set before

  953. him endured the cross,

  954. scorning its shame, and

  955. sat down at the right hand

  956. of the throne of God.

  957. Consider him who endured

  958. such opposition from sinful

  959. men, so that you will not

  960. grow weary and lose heart.

  961. See, not only does Jesus

  962. make it possible for us to

  963. get to heaven, he actually

  964. walks the path in front of

  965. us to show us what the

  966. path is, to show us what it

  967. looks like.

  968. When it says he's the

  969. perfecter of our faith, that

  970. means he has walked in it, he

  971. has lived by faith.

  972. He trusted his heavenly

  973. father.

  974. He knows the joy, the hope

  975. that we hold on to.

  976. And so he obeys

  977. unconditionally everything that

  978. his father asks of him.

  979. And now he sits at the

  980. right hand of God in heaven,

  981. exalted with all authority in

  982. heaven and on earth.

  983. I mean, can you imagine what

  984. it would have been like to be

  985. Jesus?

  986. Facing torture, being mocked,

  987. ultimately being crucified.

  988. How does he keep walking that

  989. path willingly, by choice?

  990. The answer is, he knew his

  991. future.

  992. He knew what God had

  993. promised.

  994. He knew that on the other

  995. side of his suffering, he would

  996. be exalted to the right hand.

  997. Hebrews chapter 6, a few

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  998. chapters earlier, talks about the

  999. certainty of God's promises,

1000. about the absolute confidence we

1001. can have that God will deliver on

1002. everything that he has said he

  1003. will do.

1004. And it describes that hope,

1005. that trust in his promises,

1006. that faith, as an anchor for the

  1007. soul.

1008. It's an anchor because it

  1009. guarantees the finish line.

1010. No matter how dark the

  1011. circumstance gets, the anchor

  1012. makes those circumstances

  1013. bearable.

1014. It doesn't make life easy,

1015. but it gives you confidence to

  1016. keep going.

1017. It gives you a rock to stand on

1018. when the ground is getting

  1019. uncertain.

1020. It gives you security in the

1021. storms to step out and live in

1022. light of the power of God.

1023. And it empowers you to live a

1024. significant life for Jesus, to do

1025. more than you're capable of in your

  1026. own strength.

1027. Faith is a certain future hope that

  1028. transforms your uncertain present.

  1029. It's a certain future anchor which

1030. makes a difference and has power for

1031. everything in your life now.

1032. And so the question for us tonight is,

1033. what are our eyes focused on?

1034. Are you focused on the things that are

  1035. in your way?

1036. The things you can't do, whether it's

1037. your own limitations or external

  1038. factors?

1039. What would it look like if you fixed

1040. your eyes on Jesus, the all-powerful

1041. king, instead of all the reasons you

  1042. can't?

1043. What would it look like if you fixed

1044. your eyes on Jesus and the unmatchable

1045. joy that's in him instead of the good

1046. but inferior things that he's given you?

1047. This round of activate, what ministry is

1048. God calling you to have a go at?

1049. Where is he calling you to step out of

1050. your comfort zone and trust him and his

1051. power instead of your ability or your

  1052. experience?

1053. What would God do in your life and in

1054. this church if we completely surrendered

  1055. to him in faith?

1056. If like Jesus, we fixed our eyes on the

1057. uncertain future hope and we're able to

1058. give up our own ambition and serve no

1059. matter the cost because that's faith.

1060. It's a certain future hope that transforms

1061. our uncertain present, that has power in

  1062. our uncertain present.

1063. Faith is security in God.

1064. It's confidence that he will look after us

1065. because he has said he will and so we can

1066. stop chasing our own agenda.

1067. We can stop spending our lives trying to

1068. look after ourselves because God has

1069. promised to do that for us.

1070. Paul expresses faith in Philippians 1 when

  1071. he says,

1072. Paul can say that because he is secure and

1073. confident that when he finishes the race,

1074. whenever that is, his finish line is heaven.

1075. He's confident that no matter what happens,

1076. he will be welcomed into the warm embrace of

  1077. his heavenly father.

  1078. God is faithful.

1079. He has a path for you, a faith-filled journey for

1080. his purposes and his kingdom.

  1081. So throw off sin.

1082. Throw off anything that entangles and fix your

  1083. eyes on Jesus.

  1084. Dream.

  1085. Imagine.

1086. And watch what God will do.

  1087. Amen.

1088. And watch what life is.

  1089. Amen.

  1090. So that's how I see it.

  1091. Amen.

  1092. Amen.

  1093. Amen.
