  1. It was November 2005, and I was in Alice Springs on the invitation of the Bible Society speaking event

  2. to raise awareness for its ministry to remote areas of Australia

  3. and the importance of all people having the Bible, the Word of God, in their own language.

  4. And so I was to speak at this event on the Friday night in an aircraft hangar

  5. with a Bible Society plane behind me and then at a local church on the Sunday morning.

  6. And so a friend of mine came along for the trip.

  7. We'd spent the Saturday after the Friday night exploring different parts around Alice Springs.

  8. And in the evening, we walked down from a hotel into town and then had some dinner or whatever,

  9. and then decided to walk back.

  10. And it was dark as we were walking back, and they were walking along this pathway

  11. on the edge of a dry riverbank, which most of them are, I assume, around there.

  12. And to our left, as we were walking along in the moonlight, we could make out there was a group of Aboriginals

  13. sitting in the riverbank drinking.

  14. And up ahead of us, along the path to the right, we could hear in this sort of slummy kind of area

  15. a lot of yelling and stuff going on up there.

  16. Let me just pause there for a moment in terms of that picture.

  17. I think it's fair to say that we were kind of nervous at that point.

  18. We were in an area that we'd never been in before.

  19. We weren't sure exactly where we were walking.

  20. We knew where the hotel was, and we knew we were heading towards the hotel,

  21. but we didn't know what was here between here and there.

  22. And I suspect we would have been nervous regardless of who was there,

  23. and if it was a bunch of teenagers or something like that,

  24. drinking in there, a big group of them and a big group over there.

  25. But as I said last week, I grew up with a fair amount of prejudice towards Aboriginals.

  26. It came from the rhetoric of my white, rural Australian culture.

  27. It came from my own experiences in both school and at work.

  28. You could say that my friend's experience, the guy who was with me, was more acute than mine.

  29. He spent a good part of his childhood years in Walgett, a fairly troubled place in terms of race relationships.

  30. And so in this moment, on that Saturday night in Alice Springs,

  31. both of our prejudices, which were lying down fairly deep, I suspect, came to the surface.

  32. We'd both been in similar situations in the past.

  33. And so as we walked on this pathway, I said quietly to him,

  34. do you see the group down there on the left of the riverbank?

  35. He said he did.

  36. And at that moment, over to the right where the noise was coming from,

  37. a group of about 20 Aboriginals came out from that area

  38. and it would appear that they were heading straight towards the group

  39. that were down there in the riverbank.

  40. And he said to me, do you see the group up there to the right?

  41. I said I do.

  42. And it was becoming obvious to us that our trajectory would mean

  43. that we were going to basically run straight into this group

  44. as it walked over to the group down here in the riverbank.

  45. We were both silent as we walked.

  46. You could say our hearts were racing with nerves

  47. and our minds were thinking about an escape plan.

  48. In fact, we talked about an escape plan.

  49. If something goes wrong, what are we going to do?

  50. Which way are we going to go?

  51. And where are we going to head?

  52. We were hoping not to run into this middle of these 20 Aboriginals

  53. heading across on this dark path.

  54. And we were hoping that they weren't going to notice the two white guys,

  55. the only two white guys around walking down this pathway.

  56. And it was probably about that moment that our fears were in fact realized.

  57. They in fact did notice us.

  58. And as we approached and literally as we thought we were going to have to stop

  59. as the Aboriginal group came across in front of us,

  60. the leader of that group of Aboriginals, an elderly lady,

  61. put her hands up like this as she got to the edge of the path.

  62. And I wasn't sure what she was doing,

  63. but what I realized what she was doing at that moment

  64. was she was stopping the group from walking over the top of us.

  65. And they all obliged.

  66. They all stopped.

  67. And as we walked past,

  68. she said,

  69. good evening, gentlemen.

  70. We turned and said good evening and kept walking.

  71. And we kept walking in silence

  72. for another 20, 30 paces or something like that.

  73. And my friend said to me,

  74. how bad do I feel?

  75. And I said, yep.

  76. Let me tell you a really simple moment.

  77. Back in 2005,

  78. God used that moment to expose something of the sinner racial prejudice

  79. that was in my heart.

  80. It didn't escape me at all

  81. that I was speaking about the necessity of the Word of God

  82. going to all people, even to remote Aboriginal communities.

  83. That's why they flew me there in the first place.

  84. And I had a prejudice in my heart towards the people

  85. that were meant to be receiving that ministry.

  86. There was a disconnect between what I knew to be right and good

  87. and part of God's purposes and my heart.

  88. I was treated in that moment,

  89. in the darkness, on that path,

  90. with more dignity

  91. than I treated them with my head and my heart.

  92. It should not have been.

  93. There was an article in the Australian newspaper on Friday

  94. that blames current racism in Australia

  95. on our former Prime Minister, John Howard.

  96. Apart from that,

  97. the article did say some interesting things about our culture.

  98. It says,

  99. the situation with Indigenous Australians is a particular one

  100. because they were here long before the rest of us.

  101. Many countries, including some Asian neighbours,

  102. have similar dynamics at play with Indigenous minorities.

  103. A mixture of guilt,

  104. impatience at an apparent unwillingness to assimilate,

  105. and prejudice.

  106. But we occupy the extreme end in Australia.

  107. All those gaping statistical discrepancies in health outcomes,

  108. life expectancy, suicide, incarceration rates,

  109. general indicators of misery,

  110. and corresponding mainstream attitudes.

  111. It's more complex,

  112. a lot more complex,

  113. than simply believing that if mainstream Australia

  114. would stop being racist,

  115. then everything would be fine.

  116. But,

  117. there is a lot of racism embedded in the Australian psyche.

  118. Racism lurks in communities around the planet,

  119. but it's true what the visitors say.

  120. Australia is relatively comfortable expressing it.

  121. Visitors of this country sometimes report

  122. a jarring preponderance of casual, everyday racism.

  123. For instance, British American comedian John Oliver

  124. found Australia a sensational place,

  125. albeit one of the most comfortably racist places I've ever been to.

  126. They've really settled into their intolerance

  127. like an old resentful slipper.

  128. And so,

  129. my point in this series

  130. is that the Christian faith

  131. has got something very significant to contribute

  132. to

  133. seeing the end of racism

  134. and ethnocentricity in our culture.

  135. Although,

  136. as I said last week,

  137. because of the failure

  138. of the institutional church in the past,

  139. we may not be heard.

  140. That's one thing.

  141. The other reason

  142. that this series is for us

  143. is because this church

  144. is a diverse church.

  145. And racism,

  146. while it might not be explicit,

  147. would most certainly be implicit.

  148. I think we're bought into

  149. some of the culture

  150. that we have been marinating in.

  151. In Australia.

  152. But I do believe

  153. that because of the gospel,

  154. that we could be an example

  155. and pace setter

  156. for our community.

  157. Now,

  158. the significant contribution

  159. of the Christian faith

  160. begins with what I started with last week,

  161. Genesis 1.27.

  162. God created man in his own image.

  163. In the image of God,

  164. he created them.

  165. Male and female,

  166. he created them.

  167. And the point is,

  168. as I said last week,

  169. all human beings

  170. are of one origin

  171. by divine design.

  172. And the implication

  173. is the extreme dignity

  174. of your human beings.

  175. We are one blood.

  176. And it's interesting,

  177. genetics agrees with that.

  178. Genetics says that

  179. it doesn't matter

  180. where you come from

  181. in the world,

  182. in terms of the human race,

  183. even with all,

  184. you know,

  185. we might look different,

  186. sound different,

  187. all that sort of stuff.

  188. Genetically,

  189. we are almost identical.

  190. There's a few differences,

  191. but the differences are so minor.

  192. Which is why,

  193. if I ever need

  194. a new kidney or a liver,

  195. I could just get one

  196. from my family,

  197. or I could get one

  198. from the other side of the world.

  199. I could get one

  200. from out of Mongolia,

  201. get one from Africa.

  202. I mean,

  203. there's any number of places.

  204. I mean,

  205. one of you could give me one.

  206. So if I ever need one,

  207. I'll,

  208. you know,

  209. line up

  210. and we'll see

  211. whose kidney I'll grab,

  212. you know.

  213. The Christian view of creation

  214. does,

  215. however,

  216. stand in contrast

  217. to the atheistic evolutionary theory

  218. that is broadly accepted

  219. as fact

  220. in our secular society.

  221. Charles Darwin's

  222. origin of species

  223. gave rise

  224. to the separation

  225. and classification

  226. of plant and animal species.

  227. Really helpful stuff,

  228. classifying plant

  229. and animal species.

  230. So great contribution.

  231. However,

  232. this flowed over

  233. into the categorizing

  234. of the human race

  235. into a hierarchy

  236. arranged according

  237. to evolutionary advancement.

  238. That's where it became unhelpful.

  239. Stephen Jay Gould,

  240. who died in 2002,

  241. he was no friend

  242. of Christianity whatsoever.

  243. In fact,

  244. as an evolutionary biologist himself,

  245. he significantly opposed creationism

  246. in a very popular way.

  247. And so it's really interesting

  248. that he himself wrote

  249. biologically,

  250. sorry,

  251. biological arguments

  252. for racism

  253. may have been common

  254. before 1850.

  255. Note that.

  256. He's saying

  257. that,

  258. you know,

  259. they probably existed,

  260. a biological argument

  261. existed

  262. before Darwin

  263. wrote his

  264. origin of species,

  265. but they increased

  266. by orders

  267. of magnitude

  268. following the acceptance

  269. of evolutionary theory.

  270. He's saying

  271. evolutionary theory

  272. has made a significant

  273. contribution

  274. to racism.

  275. racism.

  276. And that's where

  277. I think the problem is.

  278. It's difficult

  279. to deliver

  280. on an equality

  281. of all people

  282. such as the secular society

  283. wants

  284. when

  285. you explain

  286. the difference

  287. in terms of,

  288. well, that group there

  289. is just not as

  290. advanced

  291. as that other group

  292. over there.

  293. They're just not

  294. evolved yet.

  295. Now,

  296. the Bible knows

  297. nothing of a

  298. hierarchy

  299. of races

  300. as evolutionary

  301. theory does.

  302. And yet,

  303. having said that,

  304. the institutional church,

  305. which is meant

  306. to be built

  307. on the Bible,

  308. has a terrible

  309. track record

  310. of racism

  311. in such a way

  312. that you wouldn't

  313. think that Christianity

  314. has got an answer

  315. or a contribution

  316. to make

  317. to this issue.

  318. The prominent

  319. atheist

  320. and evolutionary

  321. biologist

  322. Richard Dawkins

  323. writes in his book

  324. in The God Delusion,

  325. The God of the Old Testament

  326. is arguably

  327. the most unpleasant

  328. character in all

  329. of fiction,

  330. jealous and proud

  331. of it,

  332. a petty,

  333. unjust,

  334. unforgiving control freak,

  335. a vindictive,

  336. bloodthirsty,

  337. ethnic cleanser,

  338. a misogynist,

  339. homophobic,

  340. racist,

  341. genocidal,

  342. pestilential,

  343. capriciously malevolent

  344. bully.

  345. Now,

  346. the interesting thing is

  347. Dawkins doesn't

  348. believe in that God.

  349. He's got no problem.

  350. He doesn't care.

  351. He doesn't believe

  352. in that God.

  353. His problem

  354. is people like you

  355. and me

  356. who say

  357. that we believe

  358. in the God

  359. of this Bible.

  360. And he says

  361. that there have been

  362. awful atrocities

  363. committed

  364. by those

  365. who believe

  366. in the God

  367. of this Bible

  368. and so therefore

  369. reject the whole thing.

  370. Now,

  371. I want to say

  372. he's right

  373. on one level.

  374. There have been

  375. awful atrocities

  376. committed

  377. by people

  378. who say

  379. that they believe

  380. in the God

  381. of this Bible.

  382. There's some

  383. terrible racism

  384. that's occurred

  385. because some people

  386. over history

  387. have thought

  388. that the Bible

  389. endorses it.

  390. And one of the most

  391. serious and damaging

  392. interpretations

  393. of the Bible

  394. in this whole issue

  395. of race

  396. is in Genesis 9.

  397. It's verses 18

  398. to 27.

  399. It's the end

  400. of Genesis 9.

  401. Noah and his family

  402. have settled down

  403. after the flood.

  404. Noah plants

  405. a vineyard,

  406. discovers wine,

  407. drinks too much

  408. of it,

  409. and ends up

  410. lying naked

  411. in his tent

  412. after a big

  413. night on the booze.

  414. Something like

  415. a university

  416. border kind of

  417. Friday night out

  418. kind of thing.

  419. And his son

  420. Ham

  421. sees his father's

  422. nakedness,

  423. goes,

  424. runs off

  425. to his two brothers,

  426. tells them,

  427. you know,

  428. makes his father

  429. look like an idiot.

  430. The two brothers

  431. instead

  432. grab a cloth,

  433. they walk

  434. backwards into

  435. the tent

  436. and they lay it

  437. over their dad

  438. without even

  439. looking at him.

  440. And when Noah

  441. wakes up

  442. and finds

  443. what his

  444. youngest son

  445. has done,

  446. he pronounces

  447. a curse

  448. on Canaan

  449. who was

  450. Ham's

  451. youngest son.

  452. Genesis 9.

  453. Cursed be Canaan,

  454. the lowest of slaves

  455. will he be

  456. to his brothers.

  457. He also said,

  458. blessed be the Lord,

  459. the God of Shem.

  460. May Canaan

  461. be the slave

  462. of Shem.

  463. May God

  464. extend the territory

  465. of Japheth.

  466. May Japheth

  467. live in the

  468. tents of Shem

  469. and may Canaan

  470. be his slave.

  471. Now,

  472. throughout the last

  473. 20 centuries

  474. or so,

  475. numerous

  476. Christian

  477. and Jewish

  478. and Muslim

  479. writers

  480. have connected

  481. that passage,

  482. the curse

  483. of Ham,

  484. with black

  485. Africans.

  486. the text

  487. became

  488. the standard

  489. text

  490. in defense

  491. of slavery

  492. in England,

  493. in the southern

  494. states of America

  495. and for apartheid

  496. in South Africa.

  497. That is,

  498. what they did

  499. was they

  500. translated

  501. through a bit

  502. of dodgy footwork

  503. that Ham

  504. means

  505. black

  506. or burnt.

  507. and therefore,

  508. they made the

  509. conclusion that

  510. this curse

  511. was applicable

  512. for all black

  513. people

  514. and especially

  515. black Africans

  516. because there's some

  517. connection there,

  518. lineage,

  519. line.

  520. they also

  521. concluded that

  522. Japheth

  523. represented

  524. because somehow

  525. he kind of went

  526. elsewhere,

  527. like probably

  528. closer to Europe

  529. and he represented

  530. white people

  531. and therefore,

  532. God commands

  533. the slavery

  534. of black people

  535. by white people

  536. and that explains

  537. nearly 20

  538. centuries of history

  539. of that.

  540. Now,

  541. I'm not going to go

  542. into the details

  543. except to say

  544. you've got to do

  545. some pretty

  546. fancy footwork

  547. with the text

  548. to come

  549. to that

  550. conclusion

  551. but I want

  552. to humbly say

  553. some really

  554. good people

  555. have come

  556. to that

  557. conclusion.

  558. Generally,

  559. not for the

  560. last 50 or 60

  561. years.

  562. I want to

  563. suggest

  564. it's wrong.

  565. There's all sorts

  566. of articles

  567. you can read

  568. about it

  569. but I want to

  570. suggest it's

  571. wrong.

  572. I'm glad

  573. in the end

  574. that we've

  575. got the Bible,

  576. we've got

  577. God's perspective

  578. on the history

  579. of humanity.

  580. The Bible

  581. does not

  582. relate all

  583. of our

  584. racial and

  585. ethnic

  586. differences

  587. in terms

  588. of lower

  589. life forms.

  590. It doesn't

  591. blame the

  592. fact that

  593. God has

  594. got personal

  595. favourites.

  596. He's a God

  597. of favouritism.

  598. It doesn't

  599. blame racism

  600. on John

  601. Howard.

  602. It puts

  603. it squarely

  604. in sin.

  605. That's our

  606. rejection of

  607. God is where

  608. the Bible

  609. puts it.

  610. So on that

  611. night in Alice

  612. Springs in

  613. 2005 when

  614. John Howard

  615. actually happened

  616. to be our

  617. Prime Minister

  618. at that

  619. time,

  620. he was

  621. not the

  622. reason that

  623. I acted

  624. the way I

  625. did or

  626. thought the

  627. way I

  628. did.

  629. My

  630. prejudice,

  631. my sinful

  632. heart was

  633. the problem.

  634. My proud

  635. sinful heart

  636. was the

  637. problem.

  638. But the

  639. Bible doesn't

  640. just identify

  641. sin as the

  642. core problem,

  643. the great

  644. thing is that

  645. it also

  646. reveals the

  647. solution to

  648. racial pride

  649. and

  650. ethnocentrism.

  651. So the

  652. Bible sees

  653. the fracturing

  654. of all

  655. relationships

  656. due to

  657. the rejection

  658. of God

  659. in Genesis

  660. 3.

  661. Adam and

  662. Eve are

  663. creating God's

  664. image to

  665. display his

  666. majesty and

  667. when they

  668. reject God

  669. all relationships

  670. are smashed.

  671. We see that

  672. right from there

  673. in Genesis

  674. 3.

  675. Relationship

  676. with God

  677. is smashed,

  678. between man

  679. and woman

  680. is smashed,

  681. between people

  682. and the rest

  683. of the

  684. created order

  685. is smashed,

  686. everything

  687. is inverted.

  688. And before

  689. sin,

  690. Adam and

  691. Eve were

  692. naked,

  693. they felt

  694. no shame,

  695. there was

  696. intimacy,

  697. there was

  698. acceptance,

  699. there was

  700. no barrier

  701. between them

  702. at all.

  703. As soon as

  704. they reject

  705. God,

  706. they had to

  707. be clothed,

  708. a barrier

  709. went up.

  710. For the

  711. moment they

  712. rejected God,

  713. the unity

  714. of the human

  715. race in the

  716. image of God

  717. became mirrored

  718. by the unity

  719. of the human

  720. race,

  721. in sin.

  722. Romans 1

  723. is Paul's

  724. version of

  725. the fall of

  726. humanity

  727. and he

  728. makes it

  729. clear there

  730. that the

  731. whole of

  732. humankind,

  733. every one

  734. of us,

  735. is contaminated

  736. by sin.

  737. And it's an

  738. ugly picture

  739. of sinful

  740. behavior.

  741. They became

  742. filled with,

  743. this is all

  744. of us,

  745. they became

  746. filled with

  747. every kind

  748. of wickedness

  749. and evil

  750. and greed

  751. and depravity.

  752. They are

  753. full of envy

  754. and murder

  755. and strife

  756. and deceit

  757. and malice.

  758. They are

  759. gossips

  760. and slanderers

  761. and God

  762. haters and

  763. insular

  764. and arrogant

  765. and boastful.

  766. They invent

  767. ways of doing

  768. evil.

  769. They disobey

  770. their parents.

  771. They are

  772. senseless and

  773. faithless and

  774. heartless and

  775. ruthless.

  776. Although they

  777. know God's

  778. righteous decrees

  779. that those

  780. who do such

  781. things deserve

  782. death,

  783. they not only

  784. continue to do

  785. those very

  786. things,

  787. but also

  788. approve of

  789. those who

  790. practice them.

  791. sin.

  792. And our

  793. unity in

  794. sin is

  795. explicit in

  796. Romans 3.23,

  797. all have

  798. sinned and

  799. fall short

  800. of the

  801. glory of

  802. God.

  803. So we're

  804. made for

  805. the majesty

  806. of God

  807. and yet

  808. because of

  809. sin we

  810. all fall

  811. short of

  812. the majesty

  813. of God.

  814. Now some

  815. of us might

  816. lean towards

  817. thinking that

  818. we become a

  819. sinner when

  820. we first

  821. sin.

  822. But the

  823. Bible's

  824. picture is

  825. that we

  826. first sin

  827. because we

  828. are already

  829. sinners.

  830. One of the

  831. Bible's most

  832. important passages

  833. on this issue

  834. is Romans 5

    Romans 5:12–19

  835. verses 12

  836. to 19.

  837. It explains

  838. there that

  839. Adam's sin

  840. right at the

  841. beginning brought

  842. the entire

  843. human race that

  844. flows from him

  845. both sinful

  846. natures and

  847. God's judgment

  848. and condemnation.

  849. everyone who

  850. comes from

  851. Adam is

  852. connected to

  853. his sin.

  854. We are born

  855. into this

  856. world with

  857. sinful natures

  858. that are traced

  859. right back to

  860. Adam's sin.

  861. And so Romans

    Romans 5:12

  862. 5 verse 12

  863. sin came into

  864. the world through

  865. one man and

  866. death through

  867. sin and so

  868. death spread to

  869. all men because

  870. all sin.

  871. sin.

  872. So we are

  873. born with

  874. inner lives

  875. that are

  876. directed towards

  877. ourselves and

  878. what we want

  879. and not

  880. directed towards

  881. God and

  882. certainly not

  883. directed towards

  884. anyone else.

  885. sin.

  886. Because we have

  887. inner lives

  888. bent away from

  889. God in sin

  890. when we are

  891. old enough and

  892. we know the

  893. difference between

  894. right and wrong

  895. we act in

  896. sinful ways.

  897. sin.

  898. We sin because

  899. we are already

  900. sinners.

  901. Now possibly

  902. and I say

  903. possibly a

  904. helpful way to

  905. look at it

  906. might be to

  907. ask the

  908. question of

  909. whether a

  910. tree produces

  911. apples because

  912. it is an apple

  913. tree or does

  914. the tree become

  915. an apple tree when

  916. it first produces

  917. an apple?

  918. Given the look

  919. on your face I am

  920. not sure that is

  921. particularly helpful.

  922. You see the

  923. reality is an

  924. apple tree can

  925. grow for many

  926. many years

  927. before it

  928. produces any

  929. fruit at all

  930. and when it

  931. does finally

  932. produce an

  933. apple you

  934. would say that

  935. it is producing

  936. fruit in

  937. accordance to

  938. its nature

  939. and if the

  940. apple tree that

  941. you bought

  942. when it finally

  943. produced a

  944. lemon you

  945. would say

  946. I have got a

  947. lemon tree.

  948. I bought an

  949. apple tree but

  950. I have been

  951. sold a

  952. lemon tree.

  953. That is what

  954. you would say.

  955. It is producing

  956. fruit in

  957. accordance to

  958. its nature.

  959. Psalm 51

    Psalms 51:5

  960. verse 5 says

  961. surely I was

  962. sinful at birth

  963. sinful from the

  964. time my mother

  965. conceived me.

  966. We are sinners

  967. by nature who

  968. show themselves to

  969. be sinners by

  970. choice.

  971. Everyone who is

  972. a parent knows

  973. this to be true

  974. by experience as

  975. well.

  976. I do not

  977. I have never

  978. had to teach

  979. my children

  980. bad behaviour.

  981. Never had to

  982. do that.

  983. I didn't teach

  984. my children to

  985. say no.

  986. I didn't teach

  987. them to disobey

  988. me.

  989. I didn't teach

  990. them to throw

  991. their food on

  992. the floor.

  993. I didn't teach

  994. them to pinch

  995. one another or

  996. to poke one

  997. another or to

  998. take their tongue

  999. out of one

  1000. another or spit

  1001. at one another.

  1002. I didn't teach

  1003. them to throw

  1004. themselves on

  1005. the floor and

  1006. scream and kick

  1007. in a supermarket.

  1008. No parent

  1009. teaches their

  1010. child to do

  1011. that.

  1012. Never wants to

  1013. teach their

  1014. child to do

  1015. that.

  1016. I didn't teach

  1017. them those

  1018. things.

  1019. But they got

  1020. it from me.

  1021. In the same

  1022. way I got

  1023. those things

  1024. from my

  1025. parents.

  1026. I like my

  1027. parents before

  1028. me have spent

  1029. my time trying

  1030. to correct

  1031. those things

  1032. which come

  1033. naturally.

  1034. There is

  1035. solidarity in

  1036. being created

  1037. in the image

  1038. of God for

  1039. the glory of

  1040. God and

  1041. solidarity in

  1042. all of us who

  1043. fall short of

  1044. God's glory

  1045. through sin.

  1046. And we see

  1047. this solidarity

  1048. in sin and

  1049. its consequences

  1050. played out in

  1051. racial terms in

  1052. Genesis 10 and

  1053. 11.

  1054. So if you've

  1055. got your

  1056. Bibles go to

  1057. there.

  1058. Genesis 10

  1059. 11.

  1060. The so-called

  1061. table of

  1062. nations in

  1063. Genesis 10

  1064. reveals one

  1065. central point.

  1066. It stresses

  1067. the common

  1068. origins of

  1069. all people.

  1070. That's its

  1071. main point.

  1072. Common origins

  1073. of all people.

  1074. And the

  1075. relationship

  1076. between Genesis

  1077. 10 and

  1078. 11 is also

  1079. quite significant.

  1080. The generational

  1081. account which

  1082. begins at

  1083. chapter 10

  1084. verse 1

  1085. continues right

  1086. through until

  1087. chapter 11

  1088. verse 9.

  1089. which means

  1090. the Tower of

  1091. Babel account

  1092. in 11 and

  1093. the Table of

  1094. Nations in

  1095. chapter 10

  1096. go together as

  1097. one unit.

  1098. The Tower of

  1099. Babel story

  1100. explains how

  1101. and why

  1102. people have

  1103. been spread

  1104. out and

  1105. filled the

  1106. earth with

  1107. different

  1108. languages.

  1109. It reveals

  1110. that the

  1111. division into

  1112. different groups,

  1113. different people

  1114. groups,

  1115. different languages

  1116. is a

  1117. consequence of

  1118. human sin.

  1119. verse 4

  1120. says,

  1121. come,

  1122. let us

  1123. build

  1124. ourselves

  1125. a city

  1126. with a

  1127. tower that

  1128. reaches to

  1129. the heavens.

  1130. That's where

  1131. God is,

  1132. reaches to

  1133. the heavens,

  1134. so that

  1135. we may

  1136. make a

  1137. name for

  1138. ourselves

  1139. and not

  1140. be scattered

  1141. over the

  1142. whole face

  1143. of the

  1144. earth.

  1145. So

  1146. humanity

  1147. comes

  1148. together

  1149. to try

  1150. and overturn

  1151. God's

  1152. judgment

  1153. in

  1154. Genesis

  1155. 3,

  1156. try to

  1157. overturn

  1158. God's

  1159. decision

  1160. at that

  1161. point.

  1162. They

  1163. work here

  1164. to try

  1165. and depose

  1166. God

  1167. and God's

  1168. judgment on

  1169. them was

  1170. to forever

  1171. hinder

  1172. them working

  1173. together.

  1174. He

  1175. scatters

  1176. them and

  1177. confuses

  1178. their language

  1179. as an

  1180. act of

  1181. judgment.

  1182. And so

  1183. taken together,

  1184. Genesis 10-11

  1185. reveals both

  1186. our unity

  1187. as one

  1188. blood under

  1189. God's

  1190. blessing,

  1191. but also

  1192. our diversity

  1193. into many

  1194. languages of

  1195. groups under

  1196. God's

  1197. judgment.

  1198. The problem

  1199. is the

  1200. human heart

  1201. that wants

  1202. to reject

  1203. God.

  1204. And it

  1205. seems that

  1206. we won't

  1207. work together

  1208. on anything

  1209. unless it

  1210. is to

  1211. reject God.

  1212. God's

  1213. sin.

  1214. The good

  1215. news is

  1216. that God

  1217. comes up

  1218. with a

  1219. remedy for

  1220. our sin

  1221. and our

  1222. division

  1223. and our

  1224. confusion.

  1225. The Bible

  1226. doesn't just

  1227. tell us

  1228. why we

  1229. have racism

  1230. and ethnic

  1231. pride,

  1232. it gives us

  1233. the solution

  1234. to it as

  1235. well.

  1236. Genesis 10

  1237. and 11

  1238. sets the

  1239. stage for

  1240. Genesis 12.

  1241. And this

  1242. is the

  1243. turning point

  1244. in the

  1245. whole Bible.

  1246. Genesis 12

  1247. is the

  1248. hinge,

  1249. it's a

  1250. turning point.

  1251. This is

  1252. where the

  1253. good news

  1254. comes.

  1255. The promise

  1256. to Abraham.

  1257. The Lord

  1258. said to

  1259. Abraham,

  1260. this is

  1261. verse 1,

  1262. leave your

  1263. country,

  1264. your people

  1265. and your

  1266. father's

  1267. household

  1268. and go

  1269. to the

  1270. land I

  1271. will show

  1272. you.

  1273. I will

  1274. make you

  1275. into a

  1276. great nation

  1277. and I

  1278. will bless

  1279. you and

  1280. I will

  1281. make your

  1282. name great

  1283. and you

  1284. will be a

  1285. blessing.

  1286. I will

  1287. bless those

  1288. who bless

  1289. you and

  1290. whoever curses

  1291. you I

  1292. will curse

  1293. and all

  1294. peoples

  1295. on earth

  1296. will be

  1297. blessed

  1298. through

  1299. you.

  1300. So God

  1301. judges

  1302. in chapter

  1303. 11,

  1304. scatters,

  1305. confuses

  1306. and then

  1307. in chapter

  1308. 12,

  1309. the beginning

  1310. of the plan

  1311. of redemption.

  1312. God's

  1313. call to

  1314. Abraham here

  1315. in chapter

  1316. 12 is a

  1317. direct response

  1318. to the

  1319. disastrous

  1320. situation we

  1321. have of

  1322. human beings

  1323. in Genesis

  1324. 3 to

  1325. 11.

  1326. This is

  1327. the

  1328. introduction

  1329. to God's

  1330. spectacular

  1331. redemptive

  1332. plan,

  1333. a plan

  1334. that ultimately

  1335. culminates

  1336. in the

  1337. person of

  1338. Jesus.

  1339. It starts

  1340. with Abraham,

  1341. it culminates

  1342. in Jesus

  1343. and God

  1344. focuses on

  1345. Abraham

  1346. here not

  1347. to be

  1348. exclusive,

  1349. it's not

  1350. because he's

  1351. kind of

  1352. thought,

  1353. well,

  1354. you know,

  1355. Abraham's

  1356. the best

  1357. of the

  1358. bad bunch,

  1359. I'll pick

  1360. Abraham and

  1361. I'll just

  1362. shower

  1363. favoritism

  1364. upon him.

  1365. but he

  1366. wants to

  1367. use this

  1368. individual

  1369. and his

  1370. descendants

  1371. to bless

  1372. and to

  1373. deliver

  1374. and to

  1375. redeem

  1376. the entire

  1377. world.

  1378. That means

  1379. God's solution

  1380. to our

  1381. sin

  1382. reaches

  1383. its goal

  1384. only,

  1385. only

  1386. when it

  1387. includes

  1388. all the

  1389. families

  1390. of the

  1391. earth.

  1392. That in

  1393. itself

  1394. is a

  1395. reason for

  1396. mission.

  1397. the

  1398. purpose of

  1399. God

  1400. choosing

  1401. Israel

  1402. was to

  1403. witness to

  1404. the

  1405. universal

  1406. power and

  1407. love of

  1408. God for

  1409. all people.

  1410. And that's

  1411. against

  1412. Richard Dawkins'

  1413. view that

  1414. the God

  1415. of the

  1416. Old Testament

  1417. is racist.

  1418. You see,

  1419. even in the

  1420. Old Testament,

  1421. God's plan

  1422. was for

  1423. all the

  1424. nations.

  1425. Psalm 67,

  1426. the nations

  1427. will benefit

  1428. from the

  1429. Abrahamic

  1430. blessing

  1431. to Israel.

  1432. the nations

  1433. will come

  1434. to worship

  1435. the living

  1436. God.

  1437. In Psalm

  1438. 22,

  1439. 86,

  1440. 102,

  1441. 138,

  1442. 145,

  1443. Isaiah 2,

  1444. 12,

  1445. 42,

  1446. 45,

  1447. the nations

  1448. will be

  1449. included

  1450. within

  1451. Israel

  1452. as the

  1453. extended

  1454. people of

  1455. God.

  1456. And as

  1457. such,

  1458. they'll be

  1459. registered

  1460. in God's

  1461. city in

  1462. Psalm 86.

  1463. They'll be

  1464. blessed with

  1465. God's

  1466. salvation in

  1467. Isaiah 19.

  1468. They'll be

  1469. accepted into

  1470. God's house

  1471. in Isaiah 56.

  1472. They'll be

  1473. called by

  1474. God's name

  1475. in Amos 9.

  1476. And they'll be

  1477. joined with

  1478. God's people

  1479. in Zechariah 2.

  1480. And a heap

  1481. of other

  1482. passages

  1483. smattered

  1484. right through.

  1485. The God

  1486. of the Old

  1487. Testament is

  1488. not a

  1489. racist.

  1490. He doesn't

  1491. have his

  1492. favorites.

  1493. The choosing

  1494. of Israel

  1495. was not

  1496. for

  1497. ethnocentric

  1498. purposes,

  1499. but for

  1500. universal

  1501. redemption.

  1502. But

  1503. Israel

  1504. grabbed

  1505. hold of

  1506. it and

  1507. thought,

  1508. we'll just

  1509. hang on to

  1510. that for

  1511. ourselves.

  1512. They

  1513. failed

  1514. consistently

  1515. for living

  1516. out God's

  1517. purpose in

  1518. calling them.

  1519. They took

  1520. the role of

  1521. being racially

  1522. and morally

  1523. superior to

  1524. the nations

  1525. about.

  1526. They

  1527. consistently

  1528. forgot the

  1529. reason why

  1530. God chose

  1531. them, and

  1532. it was the

  1533. case right

  1534. through until

  1535. Jesus'

  1536. time.

  1537. But with

  1538. the coming

  1539. of Jesus,

  1540. a radically

  1541. new way of

  1542. defining the

  1543. people of

  1544. God arrived,

  1545. namely,

  1546. by faith

  1547. in him.

  1548. You see,

  1549. faith in

  1550. Jesus

  1551. trumps

  1552. ethnocentricity,

  1553. which is

  1554. why, as a

  1555. church, our

  1556. mission statement

  1557. is to treasure

  1558. Jesus.

  1559. above

  1560. everything

  1561. else.

  1562. Jesus,

  1563. faith in

  1564. Jesus trumps

  1565. ethnocentricity.

  1566. Over and

  1567. over again in

  1568. the gospel,

  1569. you see this

  1570. happening.

  1571. The story of

  1572. the Good

  1573. Samaritan,

  1574. the foreigner

  1575. is the

  1576. hero of

  1577. faith.

  1578. He's the

  1579. hero of

  1580. compassion.

  1581. The healing

  1582. of the ten

  1583. lepers, and

  1584. only one of

  1585. the lepers

  1586. returns in

  1587. Luke 17,

  1588. and what is

  1589. he?

  1590. He's a

  1591. Samaritan.

  1592. The foreigner

  1593. shines with

  1594. humble gratitude.

  1595. The healing

  1596. of the

  1597. Syrophoenician

  1598. daughter in

  1599. Mark 7.

  1600. The worshipping

  1601. of the wise

  1602. men for the

  1603. east at the

  1604. birth of

  1605. Jesus, most

  1606. likely from

  1607. Persia or

  1608. Arabia or

  1609. something like

  1610. that in

  1611. Matthew 2.

  1612. And finally,

  1613. in Luke 4,

  1614. there's a heap of

  1615. other passages you

  1616. go to, but

  1617. Luke 4, in

  1618. this passage,

  1619. Jesus tells

  1620. the story,

  1621. two stories.

  1622. One story is

  1623. taken from

  1624. 1 Kings 17.

  1625. Now, remember

  1626. the reading, as

  1627. Jimmy read it out

  1628. to us a moment

  1629. ago.

  1630. Jesus stands up

  1631. in the temple.

  1632. He reads out a

  1633. text from the

  1634. scroll of Isaiah

  1635. 61 and says to

  1636. the crowd that's

  1637. gathered there in

  1638. the temple,

  1639. guys, this is

  1640. fulfilled in your

  1641. hearing.

  1642. So Jesus, in that

  1643. moment, declares,

  1644. I am the long

  1645. awaited Messiah.

  1646. Newsline,

  1647. headline, local

  1648. boy, declares

  1649. himself to

  1650. Messiah.

  1651. Woohoo!

  1652. And that is

  1653. blasphemous.

  1654. And the whole

  1655. crowd in the

  1656. temple are going,

  1657. he's a good

  1658. guy.

  1659. He's a great

  1660. speaker.

  1661. Great, he's

  1662. popped in.

  1663. Yeah, local

  1664. boy, we're quite

  1665. proud of him.

  1666. And they all

  1667. spoke well of

  1668. him.

  1669. And Jesus

  1670. comes back and

  1671. said, yeah, but

  1672. prophets have no

  1673. honor in their

  1674. hometown.

  1675. They're like,

  1676. this one does.

  1677. Well, I just

  1678. want to tell you

  1679. two more stories.

  1680. He tells a story

  1681. taken from 1

  1682. Kings 17.

  1683. It's a story

  1684. about God

  1685. passing over the

  1686. ethnic

  1687. Jews to

  1688. bring a

  1689. miraculous

  1690. blessing to

  1691. a foreign

  1692. Gentiles from

  1693. the land of

  1694. Phoenicia.

  1695. And the

  1696. second story

  1697. is for 2

  1698. Kings 5.

  1699. Again, the

  1700. point is, of

  1701. all the

  1702. people that

  1703. God might

  1704. have chosen to

  1705. heal of

  1706. leprosy, he

  1707. chooses a

  1708. foreign king

  1709. from Syria.

  1710. And then

  1711. they didn't

  1712. speak so

  1713. well of

  1714. Jesus.

  1715. It was

  1716. at that

  1717. point, it

  1718. says, that

  1719. they were

  1720. furious with

  1721. him.

  1722. And they

  1723. attempted to

  1724. kill him.

  1725. Ethnic pride

  1726. runs deep.

  1727. And the

  1728. point that

  1729. Jesus was

  1730. making is

  1731. that the

  1732. kingdom that

  1733. he's bringing

  1734. is ethnically

  1735. different than

  1736. what they were

  1737. thinking.

  1738. Jesus is

  1739. the end of

  1740. ethnocentrism

  1741. and racial

  1742. pride.

  1743. He says he

  1744. has come to

  1745. redeem a

  1746. people from

  1747. every ethnic

  1748. group, not

  1749. just from

  1750. one or a

  1751. few.

  1752. God's plan of

  1753. redemption, which

  1754. started with a

  1755. promise to

  1756. Abraham, finds

  1757. its fulfillment

  1758. in the person

  1759. of Jesus and

  1760. especially in

  1761. the death of

  1762. Jesus.

  1763. Galatians 3

  1764. says this,

  1765. Christ redeemed

  1766. us from the

  1767. curse of the

  1768. law by

  1769. becoming a

  1770. curse for

  1771. us.

  1772. For it is

  1773. written,

  1774. cursed is

  1775. everyone who

  1776. is hung on

  1777. a tree.

  1778. That is, he

  1779. redeemed us

  1780. by his

  1781. death on the

  1782. cross.

  1783. And then it

  1784. says, he

  1785. redeemed us

  1786. in order that

  1787. the blessing

  1788. given to

  1789. Abraham

  1790. might come

  1791. to the

  1792. Gentiles

  1793. through Christ

  1794. Jesus.

  1795. with

  1796. Abraham, God

  1797. set in

  1798. motion a

  1799. plan of

  1800. redemption

  1801. that overturns

  1802. every curse

  1803. for everyone

  1804. who receives

  1805. the blessing

  1806. of Abraham.

  1807. And that

  1808. blessing,

  1809. according to

  1810. Galatians 3,

  1811. is the

  1812. forgiveness of

  1813. sins and

  1814. acceptance of

  1815. God that

  1816. comes through

  1817. Jesus Christ,

  1818. the descendant

  1819. of Abraham.

  1820. You see,

  1821. God's

  1822. redemptive

  1823. plan has

  1824. always been

  1825. to save and

  1826. bless people

  1827. from all the

  1828. peoples of

  1829. the earth.

  1830. All of us

  1831. who are

  1832. united in

  1833. sin might

  1834. be united

  1835. in Christ

  1836. as his

  1837. people.

  1838. So,

  1839. friends,

  1840. racial prejudice

  1841. runs deep in

  1842. a sinful

  1843. heart.

  1844. And I

  1845. discovered that

  1846. night in Alice

  1847. Springs that

  1848. I was just

  1849. like the

  1850. residents of

  1851. Nazareth.

  1852. God's

  1853. love.

  1854. My

  1855. chosen

  1856. place as

  1857. a child

  1858. of God

  1859. by grace

  1860. had not

  1861. produced

  1862. humility

  1863. and compassion

  1864. for all

  1865. people.

  1866. And

  1867. ironically,

  1868. it meant

  1869. that I

  1870. was not

  1871. aligned with

  1872. God's

  1873. purpose

  1874. for all

  1875. people,

  1876. even

  1877. though that's

  1878. what I was

  1879. there to

  1880. preach about.

  1881. I

  1882. needed Jesus

  1883. to change

  1884. my heart.

  1885. You see,

  1886. my problem

  1887. is not

  1888. biology,

  1889. my problem

  1890. is not

  1891. evolution,

  1892. it's not

  1893. other people's

  1894. interpretation of

  1895. the Bible,

  1896. and it's

  1897. certainly not

  1898. John Howard.

  1899. it is the

  1900. sin and

  1901. the prejudice

  1902. in my

  1903. heart.

  1904. That's the

  1905. problem.

  1906. I need a

  1907. new heart

  1908. to see all

  1909. people made

  1910. in the image

  1911. of God,

  1912. all people

  1913. united in

  1914. sin,

  1915. and all

  1916. people in

  1917. need of

  1918. God's great

  1919. plan of

  1920. redemption

  1921. through Jesus

  1922. Christ.

  1923. That was

  1924. the Saturday

  1925. night.

  1926. Significant

  1927. steps went

  1928. forward the

  1929. next morning

  1930. when I

  1931. preached at

  1932. a local

  1933. church in

  1934. Alice.

  1935. As I

  1936. stood in

  1937. the pulpit,

  1938. I saw

  1939. something that

  1940. I had never

  1941. noticed in a

  1942. church before.

  1943. It's not

  1944. because it

  1945. wasn't evident

  1946. in any other

  1947. church,

  1948. it's because

  1949. my own

  1950. prejudice was

  1951. just so

  1952. clear and

  1953. focused in

  1954. my mind.

  1955. I saw

  1956. all the

  1957. white people

  1958. sitting in

  1959. the front.

  1960. I saw

  1961. all the

  1962. white people

  1963. taking the

  1964. rolls up

  1965. the front.

  1966. I saw

  1967. the

  1968. aboriginal

  1969. people

  1970. sitting at

  1971. the back

  1972. scattered on

  1973. the floor

  1974. and on a

  1975. few chairs

  1976. at the

  1977. back.

  1978. I noticed

  1979. for the

  1980. first time

  1981. that the

  1982. greeting and

  1983. the passing

  1984. of the

  1985. peace and

  1986. meeting as

  1987. we did

  1988. just a

  1989. moment ago,

  1990. you could

  1991. virtually divide

  1992. the room in

  1993. two.

  1994. There was a

  1995. little bit of

  1996. crossover but

  1997. you could

  1998. virtually divide

  1999. the room in

  2000. two.

  2001. And as the

  2002. white clergyman,

  2003. I had a bunch

  2004. of white people

  2005. who wanted to

  2006. come and speak

  2007. to me and

  2008. I literally

  2009. had to push

  2010. my way past

  2011. them.

  2012. And let me

  2013. tell you,

  2014. it broke my

  2015. heart when I

  2016. approached an

  2017. elderly

  2018. aboriginal man.

  2019. As I

  2020. approached him,

  2021. he bowed his

  2022. head, he put

  2023. out his hand

  2024. because he knew

  2025. that's what I was

2026. going to do, I was

  2027. going to shake

  2028. his hand, he

  2029. put out his

  2030. hand and he

  2031. wouldn't even

  2032. look me in the

  2033. eye.

  2034. I was told

  2035. later that's

  2036. because he saw

  2037. me as

  2038. superior.

  2039. Not just

  2040. because I was

  2041. clergy, it was

  2042. partly due to

  2043. that, but

  2044. because I was

  2045. white.

  2046. He has learned

  2047. all of his

  2048. life that I

  2049. am better

  2050. than he is.

  2051. Let me tell

  2052. you that racial

  2053. division in

  2054. the church

  2055. frustrates God's

  2056. plan of redemption

  2057. for all people.

  2058. racial segregation

  2059. amongst the

  2060. people of God

  2061. is a movement

  2062. away from the

  2063. following God's

  2064. redemptive plan.

  2065. And so I want

  2066. to encourage you

  2067. to use this

  2068. series to check

  2069. your heart.

  2070. You know, I

  2071. had a couple of

  2072. people speak to

  2073. me this morning

  2074. and said, I

  2075. don't have your

  2076. problem.

  2077. I don't have

  2078. racism towards

  2079. aboriginal people.

  2080. That's great.

  2081. Who is it

  2082. though?

  2083. Who is your

  2084. problem?

  2085. Does your

  2086. heart beat

  2087. with the

  2088. heart, the

  2089. Jesus heart

  2090. beats for all

  2091. people?

  2092. And if we're

  2093. going to be a

  2094. church that is

  2095. aligned with

  2096. Jesus' mission,

  2097. then racial

  2098. pride and

  2099. ethnocentricity

  2100. has to end.

  2101. It's got to

  2102. end.

  2103. It's got to

  2104. end in this

  2105. congregation.

  2106. It's got to

  2107. end in our

  2108. Chinese

  2109. congregation.

  2110. 930

  2111. congregation.

  2112. Jesus and

  2113. the gospel is

  2114. the end of

  2115. racial pride and

  2116. ethnocentricity.

  2117. And that's why

  2118. we as a

  2119. church seek to

  2120. treasure Jesus

  2121. above everything

  2122. and to seek to

  2123. treasure him

  2124. together above

  2125. everything.

  2126. Thank you.

  2127. Thank you.

  2128. Thank you.
