  1. Evening all, let's pray.

  2. Gracious Father, we thank you that you have not left us alone,

  3. as we've seen the last couple of weeks,

  4. in the solidarity we have, not just in our image of you,

  5. but solidarity in our sin,

  6. which puts us at odds with you and puts us at odds with one another.

  7. We thank you that you have worked to solve that problem.

  8. We've sung about it tonight.

  9. I pray that that reality of what you've done for us in the Lord Jesus

  10. might become very real for us personally

  11. and will impact radically not just our relationship with you,

  12. but our relationship with one another as well.

  13. And we ask it for your glory. Amen.

  14. We're into week number three on our series of racism and ethnocentricity.

  15. And racial pride and ethnocentricity has a long and a bloody past.

  16. I'll give you just a few examples.

  17. The Holocaust in Germany caused the death of up to 11 million Jews

  18. between 1933 and 1945.

  19. 1.5 million Armenians died at the hands of the Turks

  20. from 1915 to 1923,

  21. a further 750,000 Assyrians during the same time

  22. at the hands of the Turks

  23. and a further 1 million Greeks at the same time,

  24. again at the hands of the Turks.

  25. Racism and ethnic cleansing was a motivating factor

  26. that saw 3 million casualties in the Cambodian genocide,

  27. another 1 million dead in Rwanda in 1994,

  28. Soviet slaughtered 250,000 Polish people in 1937 to 1938,

  29. and another couple of hundred thousand Poles

  30. by the Ukrainians less than a decade later.

  31. Getting a little bit closer to home,

  32. between 1824 and 1908,

  33. white settlers and native Mountied police in Queensland

  34. killed more than 10,000 Aborigines

  35. who regarded them as vermin

  36. and sometimes even hunted them for sport

  37. in the same kind of way that I would treat a wild pig

  38. in regarding it as vermin and hunted for sport.

  39. That's on our own country here in Australia.

  40. Now racism in our country has become a little bit more civilised,

  41. if I can use that term very broadly.

  42. You're probably aware of the vilification

  43. of AFL player and prominent Aboriginal Adam Goodes recently.

  44. There have also been a number of Reclaim Australia rallies

  45. in capital cities around this country.

  46. And in the past week, Eddie Maguire,

  47. the president of the Collingwood AFL team,

  48. was accused again of racism.

  49. He had previously joked,

  50. apparently because of a brain freeze or a brain snap

  51. or a no brain at all, I can't remember,

  52. that he likened Adam Goodes to King Kong

  53. or that he could play a part in the movie King Kong.

  54. And so in Maguire's most recent controversy,

  55. he referred to the Victorian sports minister,

  56. John Aaron, as a soccer-loving Turkish-born moosey.

  57. Now, I want to suggest to you that it is naive to think

  58. that a prime minister making a public apology

  59. or laws against racial vilification

  60. or a general move in the direction of equality

  61. and freedom for all people

  62. or the acceptance of political correctness

  63. results in any way in the end of racial pride

  64. or ethnocentricity.

  65. The issues are deep.

  66. We had a new couple here at church this morning.

  67. Three months ago, they escaped from Syria.

  68. And I spoke to them this morning.

  69. They are literally here, refugees escaping.

  70. They went home.

  71. Their house was bombed.

  72. It's just levelled.

  73. And I said to them,

  74. I talked to them about the issues at Syria,

  75. and they said,

  76. it is very complex.

  77. There is no easy answer

  78. to the racial tensions there at all.

  79. And I think an answer to it

  80. is something that we want.

  81. In fact, something that we need.

  82. When Reclaim Australia marched in Sydney recently,

  83. more people turned out to march against Reclaim Australia

  84. than actually for Reclaim Australia.

  85. That is, there was more people turning out

  86. to march against racism,

  87. as they see it portrayed in Reclaiming Australia,

  88. than, in fact, the Reclaiming Australia group.

  89. Now, the Christian faith is not at odds

  90. with our secular society at that point.

  91. We saw two weeks ago

  92. that one of the foundational biblical truths

  93. is that all people are made equally

  94. in the image of God.

  95. There is a solidarity

  96. in our image of God,

  97. but there is also, as we saw last week,

  98. a solidarity in our sinfulness,

  99. in our rejection of God.

  100. Since Adam, right from the very beginning,

  101. rejected God,

  102. we have all shared in Adam's sin,

  103. and likewise, we have, by choice, rejected God.

  104. But the choices that we make reject God.

  105. And so this solidarity sets us

  106. not just up against God,

  107. but against one another

  108. because we put ourselves

  109. at the center of the universe.

  110. It becomes about us rather than about God.

  111. And so we need to be really careful

  112. as we deal with this situation

  113. of racial pride.

  114. We need to be really careful

  115. of not coming up with just simplistic solutions.

  116. On the TV program Studio 10,

  117. Jessica Rowe this week

  118. said that she thought

  119. that the term Moosey

  120. was racist and offensive,

  121. and she questioned

  122. Eddie Maguire's intelligence,

  123. something that a few people

  124. have done apparently over the time.

  125. She said,

  126. If he is not smart enough,

  127. and I don't think he is,

  128. to moderate his language,

  129. depending on the sort of forum he is in,

  130. he has to take the flack for it.

  131. Hear what she's saying?

  132. Just control your tongue, Eddie.

  133. Depending on where you are,

  134. just be careful about what you say.

  135. Now, don't hear me wrong.

  136. First of all, let me say,

  137. the assumption there is,

  138. if he doesn't say it,

  139. then he's not a racist.

  140. I want to,

  141. I think it's a good thing,

  142. I think it's a great thing

  143. to control your tongue.

  144. In fact, I think it would be great

  145. if we all practice it a little bit more,

  146. or let me just say myself,

  147. it would be great if I control my tongue

  148. a little bit more,

  149. and I think it's a fantastic thing,

  150. and we're going to see it

  151. in our next series in James

  152. when we get there,

  153. but the problem is significantly deeper

  154. than just controlling the tongue.

  155. This week,

  156. I was driving to a ministry seminar

  157. on Thursday morning,

  158. and I had the job

  159. of driving the seminar leader

  160. to the venue.

  161. And so we're driving along,

  162. this guy is in his early 70s,

  163. he's a very well-respected Christian leader

  164. from the United States,

  165. and we were driving along,

  166. and all of a sudden,

  167. boom, we hit traffic,

  168. we just stand still.

  169. And I knew that I needed

  170. to take a left turn up ahead,

  171. and so I put my blinker on,

  172. and I just started

  173. to sort of move across.

  174. And as I moved across,

  175. there's a car behind me

  176. that just kept pushing up,

  177. pushing up.

  178. And I'm like trying to go across

  179. a little bit further,

  180. and as we're doing this,

  181. I'm talking to this ministry guy,

  182. and we're talking about the gospel,

  183. talking about all sorts

  184. of wonderful things,

  185. and I'm at the same time

  186. trying to get across,

  187. and this guy comes up,

  188. and he just keeps,

  189. and I'm thinking,

  190. he's breaking the law?

  191. You know,

  192. my nose is in front of his,

  193. he's got to give way.

  194. If he ran into me,

  195. it's going to be his fault,

  196. and it's going to be

  197. his insurance claim,

  198. and that sort of stuff,

  199. but you kind of don't want

  200. your car to get run into,

  201. and so I'm pushing him across,

  202. and this guy just kept coming up,

  203. kept coming up,

  204. kept coming up.

  205. He just kept pushing

  206. across and across,

  207. and he's waving at me

  208. through the window,

  209. you know,

  210. mouthing obscene things at me,

  211. and I never said a word.

  212. I just kept talking to this guy

  213. about ministry and stuff,

  214. and even as we were driving along here,

  215. at one point he said,

  216. I don't think that guy

  217. is going to let you in.

  218. I said, no, no,

  219. I don't think he is,

  220. but you know,

  221. that's okay.

  222. Now,

  223. what came out my mouth

  224. was nothing.

  225. What was in my heart

  226. was something,

  227. and what was in my heart

  228. if my children

  229. were in the back seat?

  230. Remember last week,

  231. I said that by original sin,

  232. my children have learnt things.

  233. I didn't teach them.

  234. I didn't teach them

  235. to throw tantrums,

  236. anything like that,

  237. but there are some things

  238. I have taught them,

  239. and if they were in the back seat

  240. at that particular point,

  241. one of them would have piped up

  242. and said,

  243. oh my goodness,

  244. look at that idiot.

  245. That is something,

  246. I don't blame original sin for that,

  247. that's something

  248. they've learnt from me.

  249. Over time,

  250. they've learnt that one from me.

  251. That's what was in my heart

  252. at the time.

  253. I was fuming at that guy,

  254. but I never said a word.

  255. You see,

  256. political correctness

  257. might be a start,

  258. but it doesn't deal

  259. with the core issue.

  260. A sinful heart

  261. bent away from God

  262. and bent away

  263. from other people.

  264. That guy

  265. wanted

  266. one car space

  267. and I

  268. didn't want him

  269. to have that car space.

  270. We were both

  271. as bad as one another.

  272. It's interesting

  273. that as you turn

  274. to the gospel

  275. and ask Jesus

  276. often makes

  277. the

  278. hated

  279. foreigner

  280. the recipient

  281. of God's blessing

  282. or the hero

  283. of his stories.

  284. As I said last week,

  285. Jesus is the end

  286. of ethnocentricity

  287. and we'll see it

  288. today.

  289. One of the best examples

  290. is what Sam

  291. just read out for us

  292. in the Good Samaritan

  293. in Luke 10.

  294. So if you've got your Bibles,

  295. flick to Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  296. In verse 25,

  297. a lawyer

  298. asked Jesus

  299. what he must do

  300. to receive eternal life

  301. and Jesus

  302. asked him,

  303. well,

  304. what does the law say?

  305. And so he says,

  306. well,

  307. love the Lord your God

  308. with all your heart,

  309. with all your soul,

  310. with all your strength,

  311. with all your mind

  312. and love your neighbor

  313. as yourself.

  314. And Jesus says,

  315. yeah,

  316. that's right.

  317. That's right.

  318. Just do that.

  319. But,

  320. verse 29,

  321. it says,

  322. he wanted

  323. to justify himself.

  324. And so he asked Jesus,

  325. yeah,

  326. but,

  327. you know,

  328. when you say neighbor,

  329. what do you mean

  330. by neighbor?

  331. who is really

  332. by neighbor?

  333. He's looking

  334. to justify himself,

  335. verse 29,

  336. that is,

  337. he's looking for

  338. a loophole

  339. in the law.

  340. He's looking for Jesus

  341. to affirm

  342. his thinking

  343. and his actions

  344. as being righteous,

  345. as,

  346. yeah,

  347. you've done that already.

  348. You see,

  349. the Jews of Jesus' time

  350. interpreted the neighbor here,

  351. which comes from

  352. Leviticus 19,

  353. as other Jews.

  354. At a stretch,

  355. it could include

  356. some foreigners

  357. who have

  358. sort of converted

  359. to Judaism

  360. or are serving,

  361. you know,

  362. the country

  363. and that sort of stuff,

  364. but it certainly

  365. didn't include

  366. Samaritans

  367. or other foreigners.

  368. And so,

  369. Jesus tells this

  370. mainly Jewish audience

  371. this story.

  372. The story is possibly

  373. the most socially

  374. charged story

  375. that Jesus ever tells.

  376. There's this guy

  377. traveling from Jerusalem

  378. to Jericho.

  379. It's a fairly main road.

  380. We're meant to understand

  381. that this is a Jewish man

  382. traveling this road.

  383. The man gets robbed,

  384. he's stripped,

  385. he's beaten

  386. and left for dead.

  387. And then by chance,

  388. his fate would have it,

  389. as it would happen,

  390. a Jewish priest

  391. comes wandering by.

  392. This is a Jewish pastor,

  393. right?

  394. This is a Jewish pastor

  395. and so,

  396. the thinking is,

  397. surely he

  398. is going to help

  399. his brother

  400. in the ditch.

  401. But no,

  402. the priest

  403. couldn't be bothered.

  404. He walked,

  405. in fact,

  406. on the other side

  407. of the street

  408. to stay well away from him.

  409. and pretend he doesn't exist.

  410. Didn't go near him.

  411. And Jesus goes on

  412. and says,

  413. well,

  414. now a Levite comes by.

  415. So,

  416. we've gone from the pastor

  417. to the lecture

  418. of the theological college.

  419. And again,

  420. you would think

  421. that this guy

  422. is going to stop

  423. and help his brother

  424. in the ditch.

  425. But he likewise

  426. does not bother.

  427. He walks

  428. on the other side

  429. of the street.

  430. And then Jesus says,

  431. well,

  432. along comes

  433. the Samaritan.

  434. You know it's going

  435. to be the third guy.

  436. Along comes

  437. the Samaritan.

  438. And at this point,

  439. at the hearing,

  440. these Jewish crowds

  441. gather

  442. and they hear

  443. the word Samaritan

  444. and they go,

  445. Samaritan?

  446. What's a Samaritan

  447. doing in the story?

  448. You see,

  449. Jews and Samaritans,

  450. their tension ran

  451. over a long period

  452. of time.

  453. Samaritans

  454. were despised.

  455. They were not

  456. to be associated

  457. with.

  458. The majority of Jews

  459. in Judea

  460. and Galilee

  461. hated Samaritans.

  462. And by the time

  463. of Jesus,

  464. the animosity

  465. between these groups,

  466. these two groups,

  467. had been growing

  468. for several hundred years

  469. and it exploded

  470. into violence

  471. and murderous violence

  472. in the first century.

  473. And so,

  474. what is a Samaritan

  475. doing in this story?

  476. As it turns out,

  477. he's the hero.

  478. He sees

  479. the injured

  480. Jew,

  481. his enemy

  482. on the side

  483. of the road.

  484. He goes over to him

  485. and he has compassion

  486. on him.

  487. He cleans up his wounds.

  488. He treats his wounds.

  489. He puts him

  490. on the back

  491. of his donkey,

  492. takes him to

  493. a local motel,

  494. checks him in,

  495. makes sure he's

  496. well cared for,

  497. hands over his credit card

  498. and said,

  499. charge to my account

  500. anything,

  501. any expenses

  502. and I'll pick it up.

  503. And by the time

  504. Jesus finished

  505. telling this story,

  506. his audience

  507. would have had

  508. their jaws

  509. on the ground.

  510. This is

  511. not possible,

  512. Jesus.

  513. The Samaritan

  514. was an

  515. unthinkable hero.

  516. So imagine

  517. I got an invitation

  518. to speak

  519. at a Reclaim Australia

  520. rally

  521. because they thought

  522. I was some redneck

  523. and

  524. once upon a time

  525. and

  526. I happened

  527. to tell the story

  528. of

  529. an Australian

  530. SAS trooper

  531. who was blown up

  532. by a roadside bomb

  533. in Afghanistan.

  534. He's lying there

  535. on the side of the road.

  536. Along comes

  537. an Australian

  538. army medic

  539. sees him

  540. on the side of the road,

  541. pretends he doesn't see him

  542. and walks across

  543. and misses him

  544. altogether.

  545. And as the guy's there

  546. bleeding on the side

  547. of the road,

  548. along comes

  549. another Australian

  550. military personnel.

  551. This time

  552. it's a Padre,

  553. a chaplain

  554. and he too

  555. walks past

  556. and ignores

  557. the guy

  558. standing there.

  559. And the next person

  560. who walks up

  561. is a Taliban

  562. freedom fighter

  563. with his AK-47

  564. still struck

  565. to his back.

  566. Sees the guy

  567. on the side

  568. of the road,

  569. sees that

  570. it's an SAS

  571. trooper

  572. sent there

  573. to kill him

  574. and he

  575. bandages up

  576. his wounds,

  577. he puts them

  578. on the back

  579. of his donkey,

  580. he takes them

  581. to a safe place,

  582. he pays for all

  583. his medical expenses,

  584. he even sends

  585. a chunk of money

  586. back to his family

  587. in Australia

  588. to cover his

  589. lifetime military pension.

  590. What do you think

  591. the reception

  592. would be?

  593. Jesus says

  594. to this lawyer,

  595. just do that.

  596. Just go and do that.

  597. Just do what he did.

  598. Treat your worst

  599. enemy

  600. just like that.

  601. Now remember,

  602. this is going back

  603. to the original question

  604. that the lawyer

  605. asked about

  606. how he might have

  607. eternal life

  608. and so when Jesus

  609. says,

  610. just go and do that,

  611. he isn't saying

  612. give it a try

  613. and see how it goes.

  614. He isn't saying

  615. do at least once

  616. in your life

  617. if you can.

  618. He's saying

  619. live and act

  620. and love

  621. and serve

  622. and think

  623. and sacrifice

  624. like this good

  625. Samaritan

  626. all of the time

  627. then you can

  628. have eternal life.

  629. All of the time

  630. for your worst

  631. enemy.

  632. Go and love

  633. and serve

  634. and sacrifice

  635. people who

  636. belittle you,

  637. who curse you,

  638. who marginalize you,

  639. who ridicule you,

  640. who hate you,

  641. berate you,

  642. ignore you,

  643. demean you

  644. and would even

  645. kill you.

  646. And then that's it.

  647. That's the end

  648. of the good Samaritan.

  649. Go and do likewise.

  650. And it's,

  651. we just left

  652. hanging there.

  653. And so you go,

  654. so is the answer

  655. to racial pride

  656. and ethnocentricity

  657. just try harder?

  658. Work a bit harder?

  659. Just be nicer?

  660. See, Luke was inspired

  661. by God to write

  662. what comes next.

  663. One scene

  664. ends with his lawyer,

  665. the next

  666. we're in the living

  667. room with two

  668. sisters,

  669. Martha,

  670. the elder sister

  671. and Mary,

  672. the younger.

  673. And in classic

  674. birth order,

  675. Martha,

  676. the older sister,

  677. is getting busy

  678. with dinner

  679. preparations

  680. and Mary,

  681. the younger sister,

  682. is sitting on the

  683. floor at the feet

  684. of Jesus.

  685. And Martha

  686. is a little annoyed.

  687. She's busy

  688. making stuff happen.

  689. She's got stuff

  690. boiling on the stove

  691. and there's things

  692. in the oven

  693. and she's trying

  694. to staff the dishwasher

  695. at the same time.

  696. You know,

  697. she's got food

  698. all over her

  699. and she is

  700. wanting Mary

  701. to give her

  702. some help here.

  703. And in short,

  704. she runs to Jesus

  705. and says,

  706. tell Mary

  707. to get up

  708. and help me.

  709. And Jesus'

  710. response to Martha

  711. is,

  712. no,

  713. no,

  714. I'm not going

  715. to tell her

  716. to move at all.

  717. So let me

  718. come to the chase

  719. here.

  720. In the second scene,

  721. who looks

  722. the most

  723. like

  724. the good Samaritan?

  725. Martha.

  726. Martha does.

  727. Not Mary.

  728. Mary's the bad

  729. Samaritan.

  730. She's not doing

  731. anything.

  732. Martha is busy

  733. doing all the good

  734. stuff,

  735. all the preparations.

  736. Mary is,

  737. you're doing

  738. nothing,

  739. Samaritan.

  740. And Martha

  741. is going

  742. and doing

  743. and serving

  744. and preparing

  745. and Mary

  746. is doing

  747. nothing.

  748. She's just

  749. sitting at the feet

  750. of Jesus

  751. and going,

  752. oh,

  753. Jesus,

  754. I just love you.

  755. Do you know

  756. what I think

  757. is going on here?

  758. I think the lawyer

  759. should have responded

  760. at the end of

  761. when Jesus

  762. just left it hanging.

  763. The lawyer

  764. should have responded,

  765. I can't do that.

  766. I can't do that.

  767. And Jesus

  768. would have said,

  769. I know.

  770. That's the point.

  771. I know.

  772. And if you

  773. were there

  774. or I was there,

  775. he would have said,

  776. Steve,

  777. you can't do it

  778. either.

  779. And 5pm,

  780. you can't do it

  781. either.

  782. The barrier

  783. that exists

  784. between us

  785. and God

  786. and us

  787. and others

  788. that racial

  789. pride

  790. and ethnocentricity

  791. is a consequence

  792. of

  793. is not

  794. fixed

  795. simply

  796. by

  797. holding

  798. your tongues

  799. in some

  800. contexts.

  801. The problem

  802. is sin.

  803. The problem

  804. is our heart.

  805. We need someone

  806. to deal

  807. with the dividing

  808. wall

  809. of hostility.

  810. Romans 5

  811. leads me

  812. to believe

  813. that Jesus

  814. is,

  815. in fact,

  816. the Good

  817. Samaritan

  818. who comes

  819. and who

  820. does

  821. what we

  822. cannot do.

  823. You and I

  824. are,

  825. in fact,

  826. not the Good

  827. Samaritan.

  828. We are the

  829. man

  830. beaten,

  831. bruised,

  832. robbed,

  833. left for dead

  834. on the side

  835. of the road.

  836. We are cut

  837. off from God

  838. and we are

  839. dead in our

  840. transgressions

  841. and sins.

  842. Ever

  843. since

  844. Adam

  845. decided to

  846. rebel

  847. against God,

  848. we have

  849. walked in

  850. the ways

  851. of Adam.

  852. Now,

  853. it might not

  854. seem fair

  855. that that's

  856. our state.

  857. When you

  858. and I

  859. look at the

  860. carnage

  861. that's in

  862. this world,

  863. the carnage

  864. of human

  865. history and

  866. the racial

  867. genocide and

  868. the cancer

  869. and the

  870. suffering and

  871. the divorce

  872. and the

  873. greed,

  874. the fact

  875. that over

  876. there in

  877. Number 7

  878. View Street,

  879. for some

  880. strange reason,

  881. the weeds

  882. grow faster

  883. than I can

  884. kill them,

  885. it's all

  886. Adam's

  887. fault

  888. if you

  889. look at

  890. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  891. chapter 3.

  892. And every

  893. time I

  894. weed the

  895. garden,

  896. it's so

  897. easy to

  898. get angry

  899. with Adam

  900. because God

  901. picks a

  902. champion for

  903. the head of

  904. the human

  905. race

  906. and this

  907. champion

  908. blows it

  909. and ever

  910. since he

  911. blew it,

  912. our world

  913. has been

  914. messed up

  915. and there

  916. is something

  917. in that

  918. that makes

  919. me feel

  920. like it's

  921. unfair.

  922. That is,

  923. how could

  924. Adam have

  925. been so

  926. stupid?

  927. It feels

  928. unfair because

  929. I think

  930. that instead

  931. of it was

  932. you know,

  933. Adam and

  934. Eve,

  935. if it was

  936. Steve and

  937. Eve,

  938. I wouldn't

  939. have been

  940. as stupid

  941. as Adam.

  942. And yet

  943. the reality

  944. is,

  945. even though

  946. it feels

  947. unfair,

  948. I've joined

  949. him in

  950. his choices

  951. all of

  952. my life

  953. and God

  954. understands

  955. that.

  956. God

  957. understands

  958. that it

  959. seems unfair

  960. that because

  961. of Adam

  962. and his

  963. sin,

  964. that the

  965. whole of

  966. human race

  967. has been

  968. headed in

  969. a trajectory

  970. away from

  971. God and

  972. away from

  973. one another.

  974. And so

  975. God

  976. picks another

  977. champion

  978. in Romans

  979. 5 to

  980. do what

  981. is unfair

  982. to him,

  983. to God.

  984. At the

  985. cost of the

  986. life of

  987. his own

  988. son,

  989. God

  990. reconciles

  991. up to

  992. himself

  993. his worst

  994. enemies.

  995. This is how

  996. Romans 5

  997. puts it.

  998. You see,

  999. at just the

  1000. right time,

  1001. when we were

  1002. still powerless,

  1003. Christ died

  1004. for the

  1005. ungodly.

  1006. very rarely

  1007. will anyone

  1008. die for

  1009. a righteous

  1010. man,

  1011. though for

  1012. a good

  1013. man,

  1014. someone might

  1015. possibly dare

  1016. to die.

  1017. But God

  1018. demonstrates his

  1019. own love for

  1020. us in this,

  1021. that while we

  1022. were still

  1023. sinners,

  1024. Christ died

  1025. for us.

  1026. Since we have

  1027. now been

  1028. justified by

  1029. his blood,

  1030. how much

  1031. more shall

  1032. be saved

  1033. from God's

  1034. wrath through

  1035. him?

  1036. For if when

  1037. we were

  1038. God's enemies,

  1039. we were

  1040. reconciled to

  1041. him through

  1042. the death

  1043. of his

  1044. son,

  1045. how much

  1046. more,

  1047. having been

  1048. reconciled,

  1049. shall we be

  1050. saved through

  1051. his life?

  1052. Not only

  1053. is this so,

  1054. but we also

  1055. rejoice in

  1056. God through

  1057. our Lord

  1058. Jesus Christ,

  1059. through whom

  1060. we have now

  1061. received

  1062. reconciliation.

  1063. For if by

  1064. the trespass

  1065. of one man,

  1066. that's talking

  1067. about Adam

  1068. and what he

  1069. did in

  1070. Genesis 3,

  1071. death

  1072. reigned

  1073. through that

  1074. one man,

  1075. how much

  1076. more will

  1077. those who

  1078. receive God's

  1079. abundant

  1080. provision of

  1081. grace and

  1082. of the gift

  1083. of righteousness

  1084. reign in

  1085. life through

  1086. the one

  1087. man,

  1088. Jesus Christ.

  1089. Consequently,

  1090. just as the

  1091. result of

  1092. one trespass

  1093. was condemnation

  1094. for everyone,

  1095. so also the

  1096. result of

  1097. one act of

  1098. righteousness

  1099. was justification

  1100. that brings

  1101. life for

  1102. everyone.

  1103. For just as

  1104. through the

  1105. disobedience of

  1106. the one man

  1107. that many

  1108. were made

  1109. sinners,

  1110. so also

  1111. through the

  1112. obedience of

  1113. the one man

  1114. that many

  1115. will be made

  1116. righteous.

  1117. everyone on

  1118. this planet

  1119. is included

  1120. in that

  1121. text because

  1122. Adam is the

  1123. father of

  1124. everyone.

  1125. Every person

  1126. you meet of

  1127. any ethnicity

  1128. is facing what

  1129. that passage

  1130. talks about,

  1131. either death

  1132. in Adam or

  1133. life in Christ.

  1134. Everyone.

  1135. That's it.

  1136. this is a

  1137. global text.

  1138. Don't miss

  1139. that.

  1140. This is the

  1141. defining reality

  1142. for every single

  1143. person you will

  1144. ever meet.

  1145. This is not,

  1146. the Christian

  1147. worldview here

  1148. is not a

  1149. wimpy worldview.

  1150. It stretches

  1151. over all of

  1152. history,

  1153. over all of

  1154. the earth,

  1155. to profoundly,

  1156. it profoundly

  1157. affects every

  1158. person in the

  1159. world and

  1160. every headline

  1161. on the

  1162. internet.

  1163. The spectacular

  1164. sin of

  1165. Adam,

  1166. which we

  1167. all suffer

  1168. the consequence

  1169. with,

  1170. of,

  1171. and agree

  1172. with,

  1173. is not as

  1174. great as

  1175. the spectacular

  1176. grace and

  1177. obedience of

  1178. Christ and

  1179. the gift of

  1180. eternal life

  1181. in him.

  1182. Indeed,

  1183. God's plan

  1184. from the

  1185. beginning was

  1186. that Adam,

  1187. as the

  1188. representative

  1189. head of

  1190. mankind,

  1191. would be

  1192. a kind

  1193. of Christ

  1194. as the

  1195. representative

  1196. head of

  1197. a new

  1198. mankind.

  1199. Verse 17

  1200. puts the

  1201. matter to

  1202. you very

  1203. personally.

  1204. So this is

  1205. it for you.

  1206. If you're

  1207. someone sitting

  1208. here and

  1209. you don't

  1210. know Jesus,

  1211. verse 17

  1212. puts it very

  1213. personally and

  1214. very urgently to

  1215. you right now.

  1216. Where do you

  1217. stand on this?

  1218. For if,

  1219. because of

  1220. one man's

  1221. trespass,

  1222. death reigns

  1223. through that

  1224. one man,

  1225. how much

  1226. more will

  1227. those who

  1228. receive the

  1229. abundance of

  1230. grace and

  1231. the free gift

  1232. of righteousness

  1233. reign in

  1234. life through

  1235. the one man

  1236. Christ Jesus?

  1237. Notice the

  1238. words very

  1239. carefully and

  1240. very personally.

  1241. Those who

  1242. receive the

  1243. abundance of

  1244. grace and

  1245. the free gift

  1246. of righteousness.

  1247. Those words

  1248. there are

  1249. precious words

  1250. for sinners.

  1251. The grace

  1252. is a gift.

  1253. The gift

  1254. is free.

  1255. The righteousness

  1256. of Christ

  1257. is free.

  1258. And so I

  1259. call on you

  1260. tonight.

  1261. Will you

  1262. receive it

  1263. as the hope

  1264. and treasure

  1265. of your life?

  1266. And if you

  1267. do, you

  1268. will reign in

  1269. life through

  1270. the one man

  1271. Christ Jesus.

  1272. Jesus.

  1273. Jesus has

  1274. reconciled you

  1275. to God.

  1276. And in

  1277. Ephesians 2,

  1278. which Sam

  1279. also read

  1280. out,

  1281. it's a

  1282. description

  1283. of how

  1284. the death

  1285. of Jesus

  1286. reconciled

  1287. us to one

  1288. another

  1289. across racial

  1290. lines.

  1291. Ephesians 2,

  1292. if you want to

  1293. go there in

  1294. your Bibles,

  1295. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:11

  1296. verse 11,

  1297. is a description

  1298. of the

  1299. division between

  1300. Jews and

  1301. Gentiles.

  1302. Verses 19

  1303. to 22

  1304. of Ephesians 2

  1305. is a description

  1306. of the

  1307. reconciliation

  1308. of Jews

  1309. and Gentiles

  1310. together.

  1311. Now keep

  1312. in mind here,

  1313. the division

  1314. between Jews

  1315. and Gentiles,

  1316. it's not

  1317. small,

  1318. it's not

  1319. simple,

  1320. it's not

  1321. shallow.

  1322. It is huge

  1323. and complex

  1324. and deep.

  1325. It was

  1326. religious,

  1327. it was

  1328. cultural,

  1329. it was

  1330. social,

  1331. it was

  1332. racial.

  1333. The divide

  1334. between Jew

  1335. and Gentile

  1336. was as big

  1337. or bigger

  1338. than any

  1339. divide on

  1340. the face

  1341. of the

  1342. human world

  1343. today.

  1344. And so

  1345. what happens

  1346. between verse

  1347. 11 and

  1348. verse 19

  1349. that brings

  1350. about this

  1351. reconciliation?

  1352. There it is.

  1353. Jesus Christ,

  1354. the Son of God,

  1355. died and he

  1356. died by design.

  1357. You see it there

  1358. in the word

  1359. blood in

  1360. verse 13,

  1361. second half

  1362. verse 13,

  1363. you who

  1364. formerly were

  1365. far off

  1366. have been

  1367. brought near

  1368. by the

  1369. blood of

  1370. Christ.

  1371. You see it

  1372. in the word

  1373. flesh in

  1374. verse 15,

  1375. abolishing in

  1376. his flesh

  1377. the enmity.

  1378. And you see it

  1379. in the word

  1380. cross in

  1381. verse 16,

  1382. and might

  1383. reconcile

  1384. them both

  1385. in one body

  1386. to God

  1387. through the

  1388. cross.

  1389. And the rest

  1390. of this text

  1391. is Paul's

  1392. explanation of

  1393. how the

  1394. blood of

  1395. Christ,

  1396. his death

  1397. in the flesh

  1398. on the cross

  1399. removes the

  1400. enmity between

  1401. God and

  1402. Jew,

  1403. God and

  1404. Gentile,

  1405. and Jew

  1406. and Gentile.

  1407. All the

  1408. dividing walls

  1409. have been

  1410. broken down.

  1411. And therefore,

  1412. by implication

  1413. between every

  1414. ethnic group of

  1415. Christians who

  1416. are in Christ,

  1417. from many

  1418. different blood

  1419. lines,

  1420. through the

  1421. blood of

  1422. Jesus,

  1423. we have been

  1424. brought into

  1425. one blood

  1426. line.

  1427. God

  1428. ordained the

  1429. death of

  1430. his son to

  1431. reconcile

  1432. alien people

  1433. groups together

  1434. to each

  1435. other as

  1436. one body

  1437. in Christ.

  1438. Friends,

  1439. Christ died.

  1440. There's massive

  1441. implications for

  1442. the death of

  1443. Christ.

  1444. Here's one.

  1445. Christ died to

  1446. take pride away

  1447. from our hearts

  1448. towards all

  1449. other people,

  1450. whatever their

  1451. race might be,

  1452. and whatever

  1453. their status

  1454. in Jesus

  1455. might be.

  1456. Racial

  1457. tensions are

  1458. rife with

  1459. pride.

  1460. The pride of

  1461. white supremacy,

  1462. the pride of

  1463. black power,

  1464. the pride of

  1465. intellectual analysis,

  1466. the pride of

  1467. anti-intellectual

  1468. scorn,

  1469. the pride of

  1470. a loud verbal

  1471. attack,

  1472. the pride of

  1473. a despising

  1474. silence,

  1475. the pride that

  1476. feels secure,

  1477. the pride that

  1478. masks fear.

  1479. Where pride

  1480. holds sway,

  1481. there is no

  1482. hope for the

  1483. kind of listening

  1484. and patience

  1485. and understanding

  1486. and openness

  1487. to correction

  1488. that mature

  1489. relationships

  1490. require.

  1491. The gospel of

  1492. Jesus breaks

  1493. the power of

  1494. pride.

  1495. It reveals the

  1496. magnitude and

  1497. the ugliness and

  1498. the deadliness of

  1499. it, even as it

  1500. provides deliverance

  1501. from it.

  1502. Jesus' death on

  1503. the cross for our

  1504. salvation is pure

  1505. devastation for

  1506. pride.

  1507. pride.

  1508. Nick read it

  1509. out to us,

  1510. I'll read it

  1511. again.

  1512. For by grace

  1513. you've been saved

  1514. through faith,

  1515. and this is not

  1516. of your own

  1517. doing, it is a

  1518. gift from God,

  1519. not a result of

  1520. works, so that

  1521. no one can

  1522. boast.

  1523. Jesus saves us

  1524. by grace alone,

  1525. so that we would

  1526. boast in him

  1527. alone, and that

  1528. verse shatters

  1529. pride.

  1530. imagine what

  1531. ethnic and racial

  1532. controversies would

  1533. look like if all

  1534. the participants

  1535. were dead to

  1536. pride and deeply

  1537. humble before God

  1538. and each other.

  1539. Imagine what it

  1540. would look like for

1541. us as a church if

  1542. we took seriously

  1543. our core value

  1544. written on the

  1545. wall out there

  1546. called humble

  1547. authenticity.

  1548. God's plan is not

  1549. just that the

  1550. gospel will go to

  1551. all peoples, but

  1552. that all peoples

  1553. would be brought

  1554. together through the

  1555. gospel to form one

  1556. people in Christ.

  1557. And God is calling

  1558. the peoples of this

1559. world to share in a

  1560. community that

  1561. includes their worst

  1562. enemies and

  1563. reconciles them

  1564. with those who

  1565. worship and

  1566. live in other

  1567. ways than them.

1568. And if this is the

  1569. design of God,

  1570. then we will not

  1571. display and we

  1572. will not magnify

  1573. the cross of Christ

  1574. better than by

  1575. more and deeper

  1576. and sweeter ethnic

  1577. diversity and humble

  1578. unity in our

  1579. worship and our

  1580. life together at

  1581. St. Paul's.

  1582. The gospel demands

  1583. that it gets

  1584. proclaimed to all

  1585. peoples of all

  1586. ethnicities, but it

  1587. also demands that

  1588. all old culturally

  1589. driven worldviews

  1590. regarding racial

  1591. prejudices be

  1592. completely abandoned

  1593. by the new people

  1594. of God.

  1595. And we're going to

  1596. explore that a

  1597. little bit more in

  1598. the coming weeks.

  1599. Amen.
